#2 of Chronicles of the Great Sage

Chapter two of the new series, hopefully the little changes I made for the "screens" look a bit better now.

Rex stared at the monsters in front of him, ones that were larger than any of the others he had battled with so far in the forest, watching as the two stared off with one another. His shock, however, quickly faded as he realized that most of the forest around them was cut to shreds or on fire.

Really?! A forest fire?! These monsters don't have any forethought to think about what their fight is going to do to the trees around them... Damn it. Body Double! Ground Shrink!

The fox flicked his fingers and sent Shugetsu back into storage as he ran forward from the tree line and towards the monsters, as a copy of himself appeared beside him from the skill he used, one he had gotten just a few minutes ago from one of the monsters he killed. Both of them used the Ground Shrink skill to accelerate themselves at high speeds, Rex appearing behind the phoenix as the clone came up behind the jaculus, catching both monsters off guard from their sudden appearance.

""Flash Fist!"

Both foxes used the skill taken from the greater fire monkey, propelling their fists down on the monsters' backs, the force slamming both of the large monsters down onto the ground and earning him a grunt from both for his efforts. Still on the phoenix's back, feeling the bird groan underneath him as he and the clone both held their paws out, channeling mana.

""Elite Water Magic - Frozen Tundra."

The two Rexs released a wave of cold air around them, wrapping around both monsters and across the part of the forest currently on fire and instantly freezing the whole area, dousing the flames and pinning the bird and snake to the ground in ropes of pale ice and even putting out the fire wrapped around all four of the phoenix's wings. He looked across the frozen trees, sighing softly in relief as he found that the fires had been put out. The fox shook his head as he jumped down from the icy ground, his clone having vanished after casting the spell, then turned to stare down over the shivering phoenix and jaculus, both monsters staring at him with what he could only describe as a look of shock, amazement, and fear. The sight honestly amused him, and he smirked a little as he spoke.

"Now then, I don't know why the two of you were fighting and I don't care either. What I do care about is the fact both of you decide it was a good idea to fight in the middle of the forest and not caring at all about it catching on fire ," he said, staring directly at the phoenix for emphasis. "and slicing up trees that were likely home to smaller monsters," he finished, looking at the jaculus this time.

"I'm going to thaw the ice now, and I want you both sit still and not move so I can heal the wounds you both him from your fighting. If you do move or try to attack, I won't hesitate to knocking you down again. Understand?"

He knew he was talking to monsters, but unlike the feral animals back on Earth, the creatures here were able to understand words to some extent, and these two being as large as they were, likely were older and smarter than the other monsters he fought. This was confirmed when he saw both nod their heads, even while they were still pinned down by the ice. Nodding as well, the fox held up his paw and created a fireball in it, one that was much darker than those he had used before because of how densely packed with mana it was, which he then threw up into the air.

"Beginner Fire Magic - Fireball, Intermediate Wind Magic - Downburst."

Right as the fireball had floated up above the trees, a heavy gust of air fell over it, taking the heat from the dense ball and making it spread across the area in in a wave of hot air. Slowly, the ice covering the trees and monsters began to melt, and quickly evaporated into the air from the heat. Once he saw that the ice had disappeared, Rex created another smaller fireball and threw it at the larger one, causing both to explode in a shower of sparks and embers that faded in the winds as the column of air eased and eventually disappeared, leaving the forest only slightly wetter than it normally would be.

Seeing that everything had ended, he turned back to the phoenix and jaculus seeing that both of them had gotten back up and were now staring down over him, both of them with wary looks in their eyes. He shrugged and put his paws together as he started to gather more of his mana into them before he pointed at both monsters in front of him as he cast the intermediate light spell Wide Heal.

As he cast the spell, a yellow aura enveloped both and their eyes grew wide as their cuts and burns disappeared and even their missing feathers and scales grew back. Rex was honestly surprised himself with how effective the healing power of the spell was on the massive creatures.

"Well, I honestly didn't expect the lost feathers and scales to grow back as well. Interesting, not only do the cells divide to heal the wound and restore the flesh, but it also triggers new hair, feathers and scales to grow in the damaged places too at this level. I'll have to remember that... for... later."

His voice trailed off as he saw that the phoenix and jaculus had lowered their heads toward him, as if they were bowing to him. Rex blinked in confusion as he looked at the pair, but some of the knowledge from Vuimal the summoner came to the forefront of his mind, letting him know this was a sign of monsters that were submitting to another, and for tamers it was a good chance to form a contract.

"You two want to form a contract with me huh?"

The two of them nodded while still having their heads lowered, the phoenix looking at him like an eager pet while the jaculus seemed to still have a bit of fight in his eye. Bet it'll be the type to try fighting me later to try and prove itself.

Rex shrugged at the thought and lifted his paw again, pointing at the two of them as he used the skill.

"Master-Servant Contract."

As the still activated, a white light surrounded the three of them and two silver chains wrapped around the monsters' necks before the light eventually faded. He stepped closer to the due to take a look at the chains, something that were called the Necklace of Subservient Monster and signified a monster was tamed by someone and each had an amulet at the front unique to the master. When he got in front of them, he saw the amulets on were the same, and it looked like composite of a sun and crescent moon.

"Oh, a sun and moon huh? That's actually a pretty nice design," he muttered to himself, before shrugging and looking the two over again. He knew that now that they were his contracted monsters, he would have to give them names since most wild monsters did not have one. The fox smiled as two names came to him pretty quickly because of what their species were, lifting his paw again towards them.

"Now that you're contracted with me, I need to give you two some names. And I actually have two really good names for you both. Name Order - Ra, Apophis."

Rex gazed at their status screens using Analyze to confirm the names took root, and seeing that they were, he couldn't help but smirk at the thought of naming two monsters after gods from his world. He nodded in satisfaction with himself before he realized he hadn't checked his own status since leaving the tower, even after defeating so many monsters. He used the skill again on himself, and what he saw gave him a brief shock.

What the heck? I jumped to a lot of levels from those fights? That's a surprise... I thought it would require more experience with each level up to get the next, I wonder why it happened so quickly like this. I'll have to try and figure it out later.

He shrugged and waved the screen away, before pulling out some of the food he had stored in the Lacrima Ring, already cooked and having been frozen in time within the ring, and gave the slabs of meat to his new companions while ripping into a piece himself. He watched as both phoenix and jaculus dug into and devoured their large slabs of meat while savoring the juicy flavors of the seared steak in his own maw, chuckling as bits and pieces started to fly around the apparently famished pair. They continued to eat in silence for a nearly ten minutes before the monsters had finally eaten everything, although Apophis only chewed on a bit of the meal before swallowing the rest of his meat like the snakes he was used to.

Good to see that aspect isn't all that different in this world. Apophis was a normal type of his species, but Ra is a rare type according to the status, wonder if that's just because he has four wings or if it is something else. Oh well, maybe we can confirm it a little later.

Rex shrugged his shoulders as he finished off his own piece of meat, licking his fingers clean of the juices that leaked before he looked at his two new companions, lifting a paw towards them as he thought about one of the tamer skills.

Shrink.

He activated the skill before the two monsters could react, their bodies beginning to shine brightly and catching them both off-guard as their forms were completely covered. When the light disappeared, both Ra and Apophis had shrunken down to a much smaller size, roughly the size of a feral bird and snake. As the two looked at their new bodies, Rex reached down and gently picked them both up, setting them on his shoulders as they kept trying to orient themselves.

"Sorry boy, but your full size would disturb everyone once we finally find a city."

~ * ~ * ~ * ~

"Finally!"

Rex nearly screamed the word as he exited the thicker part of the forest and managed to see the telltale walls of a city for an alternate world in the distance, already a bit tired of having spent what he could tell had been most of the day wandering through the forest, fighting more monsters, and dealing with a cranky, hissing serpent in his ear as Apophis took a long time to stop complaining about being so small. By the time he had seen the walls, Rex was about ready to undo the skill and ride one of the monsters above the trees, but now he did not have to worry about that.

The fox was all but smiling as he was walking up to the gate with Ra flying around him, however by the time he reached it, he was confronted by a small group of soldiers lined up in front of it. He tilted his head at the fearful expressions on their faces before a hawk in slightly nicer armor stepped away from them and close to him, eying the two monsters as he spoke.

"Hey kid, mind holding back for a little bit. Your little there is spewing fire so we can't just have you walk in without a care in the world like that, you'd be responsible if it set anything on fire you know."

Rex turned and looked up at Ra who had been circling around him, seeing a few trails of fire wrapped around him and little embers on his wings as he hovered in the air. He gave the phoenix a quizzical look, before jerking his head in the opposite direction to get him to come back over. The mythical avian flapped his wings again, extinguishing the flames and gliding over to land on the fox's shoulder, giving a slight chirp as he settled into place. He gave a quick nod at that before he turned back to look at the hawk.

"Sorry about that, he's a little energetic. I'll make sure he doesn't wander off while we're in the city."

"Yes, that would be great. By the way..." the hawk replied, pausing as he looked back and forth between Ra and Apophis. "What sort of monsters are they? We have to keep a record of tamers and their companions to ensure no one accidentally attacks them. They have chains correct?"

The fox nodded as he lifted up his right paw, cupping under Ra's beak and chin with his index finger and letting the hawk see the chain on him, while the one on Apophis was clearly visible against his scales.

"They do have collars, and they are a phoenix and jaculus. Also, I'm not a tamer, I'm a magic warrior."

The soldier's eyes widen slightly in surprise when he heard the species of the monsters, unconsciously taking a step back as he looked at the pair in almost disbelief. However, he was quick to recover himself and gestured for the group to follow him towards the office-like building next to the gate. Rex shrugged and followed along, his monsters resting on his shoulders as they went past the small line of other people waiting to enter the city. He followed until they arrived in a small room in the office, with the hawk taking the seat at the table and gesturing for him to take the other opposite him, which he gladly took to give his paws a rest.

"Sorry for asking you to come in here, but after what you said I didn't want any others to hear and panic if you know what I mean. Oh, and my name is Kreival by the way."

"Rex, and these are Ra and Apophis," he said, gesturing toward the phoenix and jaculus in turn. "And I understand that they might be a bit out of the ordinary. But I'll make sure they don't cause any trouble. Is there anything else I need to get into the city? I do still have to go and find a place to stay and get us all some food."

"Ah right, here."

The hawk stood up and gestured to a crystal embedded in a small pedestal, waiting for the fox to stand up as well and join him next to it before he explained further.

"Since you are a newcomer, we will need to check your status on this appraisal stone to ensure you don't have any criminal marks, although if you have something noble like a phoenix following you I doubt you will have it, but it's the law."

"No worries, I understand."

Rex replied in understanding as he placed his paw on the stone, seeing it light up and pulse in a gentle blue glow, followed by his status screen appearing in front of them with the false information he made with Conceal Status instead of his real status.

Looks like these things are definitely weaker then my Analyze skill. If anyone else could use Conceal Status then it would easy for dangerous people to walk in.

"Master of Legendary Beasts?! I can't believe you were serious that these two were a phoenix and jaculus, but I guess I have to know... and level 35 at your age? Just what have you been doing to reach that high, only capital knights and B-rank adventurers or higher are usually that strong."

"Mostly fighting monsters when I was trying under my mentor before he died," was Rex's reply, although it was a lie he has thought up to cover the fact he is from another world and would be without any allegiance to the kingdoms here and, if he was honest, completely ignorant to what the common sense for this world would be.

"I see..."

Kreival seemed to have something else he wanted to say, but he held his tongue and pulled out a scroll and started to write on it, asking Rex a few questions as he did so about his background and where he has been, all things that the fox made up on the spot. Finally he set the pen and scroll down and nodded.

"Alright, everything seems to be alright. However, to enter a city you'll have to pay a toll if you're not an adventurer. Do you have any coins on you or something you could sell to cover i-"

THUMP

The hawk was cut off as pile of monkey pelts fell between the two, summoned by Rex from his Lacrima Ring as he spoke up.

"Will these work by chance?"

"Wha... no, I'm not even going to ask. Please wait a moment while we have them appraised and sold, and you can have the remaining money. After that, I can give you directions to the guild if you'd like to register and avoid the toll next time."

It only took about ten minutes before the group was let through the gate, Rex's pockets a few coins heavier now than it was previously as he walled down the main street, looking through the small crowd that were out and seeing that quite a few were staring his way and looking at his two beasts. He chuckled to himself as he kept walking, following the directions given to him by Kreival until he arrived at the building that was described to him. He looked over the multi-storey building, its dark wooden front nicely polished and welcoming.

"So this is the Adventurer's Guild eh? Time to start the real fun."

Marcus couldn't help but grin at the thought as he walked into the open doorway.
