#4 of Hellbound

Not all whom wander are lost, not all whom are golden and shining are pure, and not all whom are broken are weak. A different kind of hero fighting battles no one knows of, her true strength was never that which came from her God.

As the skies opened up and rain began to pour down, two small figures appeared out of the gloom along the road leading up to the entrance of Hopes Reach castle. Situated on a large outcropping of the cliffside, it was known for being the most impenetrable fortress in the kingdom. A strategical point that watched over the river mouth leading further inland to the central Kingdom and the reigning rulers own Castle. Large cannons faced out toward the ocean and rivers, able to decimate even the largest of ships which tried to enter either river mouth on either side of the large castle. Along with a full complement of armed and armored soldiers for any forces that did manage to land troops on the ground, Hopes Reach castle was a great deterrent for any invading force to think twice.

"Halt! Who goes there?" Called out one of the large brawny lupine guards as he leveled his wickedly sharp looking spear at the small figures.

"I am Void, Chosen of Svorag...the snake..." the dark furred rabbit with long raven locks almost growled the last few words. Her hair pushed back by a band formed of a ring of gold and another of silver, made to appear in the form of twin snakes intertwined, "I come bearing urgent news for your lord, we must speak with him immediately."

"You? You look more like a common whore than a Chosen, be gone wench! Before I run you through!" the large grey wolf snarled and took a step toward the smaller rabbit.

"Try it and see what happens," Hope replied from behind her sister, stepping into the light and drawing her hood back to reveal her long silver locks. The twin lapines stared up at the smirking wolf, knowing he was not intimidated by them in the slightest.

"I warned you!" the guard snarled, taking another step closer and aiming his spear right at her gut as he thrust it forward; only he felt a sudden sharp pain in his left buttock. Turning to look behind himself, the guard saw a small shimmering dark purple light with the tip of a spear poking from within and into his hind quarters. Looking back at the rabbit, he saw a similar one just at her belly.

"If you're quite done, I would appreciate getting out of this rain and having a word with your Lord now," the first lapine spoke a little louder, a slight note of laughter being barely contained mingling in her words.

"Yes, m'lady..." the wolf grimaced as he slowly withdrew his spear from the portals and his posterior before painfully hobbling aside to let the two rabbits pass. Nodding at the other guard barely managing to hold in his laughter to follow them through and announce their arrival.

"Your Sisters must be mistaken, no one would be crazy enough to try an assault on my fortress!" the old lion scoffed at the news the two small lapine ladies had delivered a short while later. The flickering light of the hearth turning the grey of his muzzle into a soft amber color.

"We're not talking about normal people here, these are demons from literal hell. They will throw endless armies at your fortress if there's even a chance of them removing the threat of it," Hope tried to reason with the old feline, but she sensed it was starting to seem hopeless to make him see reason.

"My sister is correct, we're starting to see indications of something bigger at work here. Someone is making subtle moves to set the stage for all-out war, if they manage to topple Hopes Reach, there will be no protection on this side of the Kingdom from an enemy fleet," Void began to explain. "The attempt to prevent the west coast from shoring up their defenses failed thanks to Tannis' intervention. We're trying to do the same on the east. We suspect the attempt here to be even greater now after their previous failure."

"Yes, I heard rumors of undead attacks on the rise. Very well, you may stay here in Hopes Reach until we're certain of the threat, or lack thereof," the Lion finally agreed, turning about to face Void with a stern look.

With the increased threats abound as of late, Void knew help would not come quickly if things got out of hand. She was used to hardships and having to fight however, she was a berserker after all, as tough as they came from her mountain clan. The ebony furred rabbits of the crags were known for being some of the most ferocious fighters around, trained from a young age to hold and fight with a weapon. Some even before they took their first steps; despite being small of size, even a seasoned warrior knew to keep on their good side.

At Void's request, she and her sister were given separate rooms for lodging. Void claimed she required privacy to commune with her God, but her sister knew better, only she never spoke of it. As far as Void was concerned, Hope did not know what went on behind closed doors and in private either, she hoped to spare her sister of such knowledge for her own protection.

"Well done, my pet," A soft smooth voice called from the shadows beyond the reach of the flickering light from the fire in the fireplace set at one corner of her room. Glowing golden eyes appearing before a large silver and gold serpent slithered out into reality. Reaching out to brush his fingers against the soft ebony fur of Void's cheek, a smile cracking his lips as she pulled away.

"I'm just doing my job," she replied with contempt.

"Come now, there'sss no reassson to be ssso cold. I know you enjoy thisss jussst asss much asss I do," Svorag spoke softly, reaching out to touch the small rabbit again, only this time his smile fading as she pulled back once more before he could touch her. "Why mussst you be ssso petulant? I don't want to hurt you, but you conssstantly force me to!" he hissed darkly.

Void yelped in pain as he roughly grabbed her long ears and used them to force her face down hard on the cold stone floor, Void yelping as an uneven corner of a stone tile scratched across her cheek and drew blood. But the snake did not care, he was too busy ripping her clothing down and forcing her tail up out the way. Just as he had countless times before, Svorag forced himself inside the unwilling rabbit, savoring her pained cries as he roughly took her, again and again.

Once he'd sated his desires and left Void curled and trembling in the dampness of her own blood and tears did he return to his former soft spoken self. Reaching out to brush a hand across her cheek almost lovingly, the deep scratch vanishing in an instant along with the various other wounds he'd inflicted on her during his moments of passion.

"If only you didn't make me ssso angry, I wouldn't have to hurt you ssso much. There, all better now, sssee how loving and gentle I can be if you jussst behave?" Svorag intoned before giving her a soft kiss to her cheek, slithering over the small rabbit as if she were nothing more than a doormat before he vanished back into the shadows.

Void dared not move for fear of him returning and punishing her further. Eventually sleep would find her, though rest would not. Her dreams filled with pain and fear, only the sound of her sister's voice singing to her seemed to calm the endless nightmares, eventually letting Void sleep peacefully. Unheard and unnoticed, Hope had slipped into her sister's chambers, tears in her eyes as she again found her sister cold and trembling on the floor. Very quietly and slowly she took the covers from the bed to place over her shivering sister, even tossing a few more logs onto her fire to try keep the room warm. Hope hated hearing the whimpers her sister made when she slept, curling up behind her and gently holding the trembling rabbit while softly humming and singing to her until she seemed to settle.

Hope awoke at the first light of dawn, setting the room back as she'd found it before returning to her own bedchamber. As always she made sure to leave no trace she had been there, but she also made sure her sister was looked after as best she could do under the circumstances.

As Void slept, Hope called out to the Sisters to relay a message to one of the other Chosen, imploring her for aid. She didn't know whom else to turn to as the other Gods refused to interfere with their sibling and his Chosen, likewise the other Chosen were not strong enough to stand up to a God. All except one, or so she hoped.

The days following their arrival were mostly uneventful, no sign of any trouble and almost giving the twin rabbits hope that for once the Sister's had in fact been wrong. Void smiled as she watched her sister dance and play with a few of the children around the castle, even on occasion joining in. It was times like these where Void wished her sister hadn't been chosen to be her attendant, she would have made an excellent mother and it showed with how quickly the children flocked to Hope and almost demanded her attention.

Most of the time Void would be on patrol by herself around the castle walls, exchanging courteous nods with the various guards at their posts; or just looking out across the raging ocean far below on the eastern side of the castle, or out across the lush green fertile lands on the western side. She could see the various towns off in the distance, looking so peaceful and idyllic. The "horn" as the locals called it, offered a brilliant view of the land spread out below.

Almost a week later they began to start seeing signs of the threat, beginning with just a random undead or two wandering close to the Castle gates. But every day after the numbers and frequency began to increase, growing from just undead to scavvs and even a Ravenous. The soldiers were able to deal with the undead and scavvs attacking the outlying villages well enough, but the Ravenous had managed to kill one and severely injure another two men before Void could get to them and help.

The large malformed creature looking as if it had been constructed from various discarded body parts, metal plates covering portions where the various parts did not mesh quite well together. Its eyes hidden behind a thick steel plate which had been nailed into its flesh. The creature's lips and tongue devoured due to its insatiable hunger for flesh, giving it an even more terrifying appearance. Just as the creature was about to rip a captured soldiers arms from his body, Void cast her portals on the Ravenous's own limbs, separating them from its body. Even with its limbs severed the creature would not give up, bending over and trying to bite at its denied meal on the floor before it. The soldier quickly scrambled to his feet and ran as soon as he was free, looking back just in time to watch as Void again cast more portals, this time ones which decapitated the Ravenous's head from its body and put an end to the threat finally.

Tales of her heroics quickly spread through the castle, those that had doubted her abilities quickly came around and accepted that the small ebony rabbit was indeed a Chosen or at the very least a fierce fighter. The majority of the soldiers had been witness to her running headlong into hordes of undead and scavvs while fighting with nothing more than a pair of short swords, even more impressive was the fact she hardly ever came back with even a minor wound despite her meager leather vest and skirt. Everywhere she went in the Castle, she was being stopped by people wanting to chat or just ask questions. Of course she would smile and try be polite to everyone, even though the constant questions and remarks were extremely draining for her.

Finally night fell and people withdrew to their quarters, giving Void some much needed peace and quiet. The sky was clear and the stars were out, shinning in all their glory like a magnificent tapestry before her. The world outside seemed so peaceful and perfect in that moment, however inside her head the voices would not stop.

"It must be such an honor being chosen....," the voices in her head replayed as she climbed the stone stairs.

"You must be so happy he chose you," they had said in envy.

"He must make you feel so strong and powerful," they had continued.

The cold evening air whipped her long dark hair about her face, chilling her to the bone as she stared out into the quiet darkness all around. It was so peaceful up here, it almost felt like a different world and all her problems didn't exist or were inconsequential. But she knew now, just as she had at least a dozen if not more times before, they were anything but. Every waking hour was torment, never knowing when he'd come for her again, to satiate his needs.

At first she'd been so innocent, so naïve about such things, it had flattered her when he'd taken her that first time. But now she knew better, his love was anything but pure, it was poison in her veins and she needed to escape it. With a quivering sigh, she closed her eyes and stepped off the ledge.

The last sound she heard was a startled scream hurtling up at her from below, then nothing but inky black all around her. An odd comforting warmth that for a brief moment brought some measure of peace. But like before, she knew it wouldn't last, he would find her and drag her back to his hell on earth.

"Sssilly Rabbit, why do you run?" His voice was soft and sweet, belying his true nature.

"Just let me go...," She pleaded with him, just as she had countless times before.

"Why would I do sssuch a thing, don't you love me anymore?" Even though she couldn't see his face, she knew he wore that same wicked smile again.

"Haven't you hurt me enough?" Her words tinged with anger and regret.

"No, it'sss never enough..." He roared before suddenly appearing out of the darkness and grabbing her by the throat.

Void found herself back inside her bedroom, the large silver and gold serpent smirking at her as he squeezed down about her windpipe, making her gasp for air as he slammed her hard against the wall. Her feet kicking in futility as she clutched at his wrist, trying to release his grasp about her throat. His other hand crudely cupping between her thighs as he groped and fondled the smaller rabbit.

"You're mine, preciousss one. You can't leave thisss world, not until I sssay you can!" Svorag hissed, finally lifting her away from the wall as his cold scaled form began to curl around her legs and thighs. His hands painfully grabbing her wrists and pulling them up and out behind her, exposing her bust to his flicking tongue. "Your pain and suffering tassstesss exsssquisssite," he hissed out before sinking his fangs into her flesh and tasting her blood.

Void closed her eyes, biting the inside of her cheek hard enough to taste her own blood as she tried not to cry out. She knew that's what he really wanted and she would deny him this one pleasure as long as she could. But he always found new ways to make her cry and scream, until she was begging for death rather than to go on. The snake would smile his wicked smile as he listened to her pleading sobs before he healed her, only to do it all over again.

Every morning when she awoke, her body was renewed as if nothing had happened. But the scars and wounds remained in her mind, unseen to everyone except him. To the world, he was a God, a protector and someone to be worshipped. To her he was worse than the Demons she fought against; at least they did not lie and hide their true nature.

To the world Void was his Chosen, his beautiful champion. Unlike the other Chosen, Void never really spoke of her relationship with her God, Svorag the serpent. Most took it as a sort of vow of silence or as sign of respect and admiration, but in reality she was forbade from speaking of what actually went on for fear of reprisal against her sister. Svorag had been very careful with his selection, choosing a pair of twin sisters from the mountain warrior tribe. One as his Chosen and the other as her attendant. The public had adored him for his choice, believing he did it out of love so the Chosen would have a family member gifted with longevity and would not be so alone.

Little did they know he did it purely for leverage, her sister was nothing but a tool used to keep Void in line. He had promised to do worse to Hope if Void did not let him do as he pleased to her.

*************************************************************************************

The attack came out of nowhere; Void was awoken by screams and shouts from outside. Scrambling to get dressed and rushing out into the throng of people running every which way, fires raging all around the Castle. The sound of metal ringing against metal becoming louder as she made her way into the central courtyard, finding the soldiers fighting against a horde of undead and scavvs, but there was something else there as well.

A large scaled beast, with the face of a bear and the horns of a bull. Its large vicious clawed hands cut through the soldiers steel armor like it was nothing more than cloth. It wasn't like the soldiers weren't able to hit it either, she saw their blades strike against its large round belly, but even the sharp points of the soldiers spears could not pierce its hide. The creature seemed to be laughing as the soldiers tried in vain to kill it.

"Shit! Stand back you idiots, clear the civilians from the Castle, go...get to safety!" Void yelled out as she charged at the beast, withdrawing her twin short swords. Running and sliding beneath its large gut, Void rolled onto her knees behind the creature and slashed at its heels to try sever tendons, but her blades felt like she was drawing them across stone and had no effect on the creature.

The creature turned around with surprising speed and glared down at her, raising a large hand to bring its claws down hard. Void barely managed to roll back into one of her portals just before its claws sunk into the stone where she had just been kneeling, the rabbit appearing up in the air above the creatures head a moment later. Her short swords raised high as she yelled, bringing them down against the back of its neck, again feeling like she were trying to stab a large boulder and her swords kicked back in her grip without so much as leaving a mark on the creatures hide.

The creature laughed, reaching behind its head and grabbing one of her wrists in an instant, making the rabbit scream as it felt like her wrist had been crushed between two large rocks. Void found herself being flipped up over its head and slammed down hard onto the stone of the courtyard, pain flaring in her back and side as she felt something pop inside herself. Through the haze of her pain she saw Hope standing with a group of frightened civilians, directing them out of the burning buildings and out to safety. Hope briefly turned to face her sister, yelling out "Help is coming!" before returning to help the civilians escape. Void cursed as Hope's yelling caught the attention of the creature, it turned to look in Hopes direction as well before stomping down on Void's head just as it started toward the unaware group.

"No!" Void shouted, forcing herself to her feet and running after the creature even with her vision blurred and obscured by her own blood. She tried to raise her arm to slash at the creatures back again but found she couldn't, looking down at her right shoulder she saw it sitting at an unnatural angle. The pop she had felt, her shoulder was dislocated, if not worse. It still wasn't enough to deter the berserker rabbit however, snarling through the pain as she swapped her remaining sword to her left hand and again slashed at the creatures back, knowing it wouldn't harm it, but maybe she could at least distract it long enough for Hope to get the people to safety.

"Stupid mortal, no weapon can pierce my hide!" it turned around to laugh at her.

"Thanks for the tip..." Void replied as she again barely dodged a blow from the creature, falling back into a glowing purple portal on the ground behind her. The creature stood looking confused for a moment until it looked down at its belly. Roaring in pain as it suddenly started to scratch at its own body, trying to get the sudden pain out.

The remaining soldiers looked on in confusion as the creature lost all interest in the people trying to escape, instead it seemed to be ripping itself apart chunk by chunk. Finally its pained wails stopped abruptly when a large glowing purple wound bisected it from head to groin, with a final blink of its glowing red eyes the creatures separated and fell into two almost equal piles of quivering and twitching flesh. Standing at the center was a grim looking ebony furred rabbit, covered in the creature's blood and innards.

As Void stood panting, trying to regain her bearings, she heard the sound of wood splintering and stone cracking. Frowning in confusion, she looked around for the source of the sounds. It seemed to be coming from one of the Castle towers; right above where Hope was trying to calm a frightened child.

"Hope, move!" Void yelled just as the structure began to collapse. Hope looked up in time to see her sister, arm outstretched as if trying to pull her to safety. But nothing happened, no portal appeared. Hope and the crying child vanished beneath the falling rubble and flames, leaving Void staring on in disbelief. Slowly she hobbled painfully over to where her sister had just been kneeling, seeing her hand reaching from between the large stones. Grasping at the clutching hand, feeling Hope give her one last firm squeeze before her fingers went limp.

"Next time you will obey me when I tell you to do sssomething, pet," a soft smug voice spoke from behind her.

"Why!? I could have saved her, I could have saved them all!" Void cried out in agony, clutching the cold dark furred hand reaching out from beneath the rubble.

"You? You're worthlesss, you couldn't sssave anyone. Even if I gave you every lassst drop of my ssstrength, you ssstill couldn't have sssaved her, becaussse that'sss what you do, you let everybody down," Svorag mocked as he reached out to grab the grieving rabbit by her ears. With a firm tug he sent her flying back into the air, only to bounce and roll along the uneven stones and land in a crumpled heap beside an overturned wagon.

"Monster..." she whispered through a hoarse sob.

"What did you call me?" the large silver and gold serpent turned to glare at her, his smirk fading from his lips.

"Monster!" Void yelled, struggling to her feet as she cast two portals as subtly as she could manage, hoping not to alert Svorag to her intentions. A faintly glowing light shimmered just up and behind the snakes head and the other beneath the pile of rubble that had claimed her sister's life. In an instant, the pile of rubble was turned into a volley of large and heavy projectiles aimed right at the serpents head.

"Pathetic wretch!" Svorag yelled suddenly, casting another pair of his own portals. One glowing golden shimmer just behind him and another glowing silverish shimmer just in front of himself. For a moment he thought he saw Void smiling as she looked past him, just before the first couple of large projectiles impacted with her form and began to knock her backwards. Her bones cracked and skin tore, leaving a barely recognizable form crumpled among the new pile of broken rubble. "Now look what you made me do, go on...beg for mercy, little rabbit..." he hissed with a soft laugh as he began to slither toward her.

"Don't you dare touch her, snake..." Tyne growled, the vixen stepping in front of a weakly smiling Void. The rabbit's eyes closed as she drew her last ragged breath and lay motionless among the rocks and debris.

"She's mine to do with as I please!" Svorag hissed and made to grab for the impetuous vixen's throat and shove her out the way.

"Not anymore, she's at peace and I will see that she remains there...with her sister!" the vixen shouted with a booming voice that shook the castle walls. Svorag's usually cold and calculating eyes were wide, at first from surprise that someone would speak to him like this. Then from fear as he began to yell and writhe in pain, seeing Tyne had grabbed the wrist of his hand intending to grab her throat. An unbearable heat burning at his flesh, delivering a pain unlike anything he had ever felt before. Even when she released his arm, the pain followed as he retreated back into the shadows whence he'd come from.

"Every time you so much as think of doing what you did to Void to anyone else, your pain will only get worse," Tyne threatened darkly, her eyes glowing a faint yellow as she glared at the retreating snake.

"Did you just wound a God?" Her attendant Harper asked with raised brows, staring at Tyne in disbelief.

"He's lucky that's all I did," the vixen growled and turned back to face the mangled body of Void, with a sigh full of sadness she leaned down to press her palm to the rabbits cheek. Closing her eyes and resting her forehead to her once friends own, the rabbit's wounds began to heal and restore her form. "She deserves a hero's funeral, she was the best of us."
