Daniel paused, looking up from the coffee table at which he sat, his mocha mint iced cold brew, extra mint before him, a half-eaten apple Danish sitting on a small plate.

“Such a silly advertisement," Daniel chuckled, then immediately blushed as some nearby patrons – human and anthropomorphic, glanced at him for his unthinking comment. “Sorry..."

Quickly, Daniel finished his coffee and then stood up, holding the Danish in his mouth as he brushed a few errant crumbs off his shirt and trousers. Feeling like every eye in the coffee shop was on him, Daniel slinked out – if he'd had a tail – he was certain it'd certainly try to be tucked between his legs in guilt and shame.

Stupid, idiot, think before opening your foolish mouth... Daniel silently chastised himself.

Anthropomorphic people had evolved alongside humanity, at first he imagined, there were inevitable conflicts and hostility, but millions of years had done whatever magick it had – and now – humans peacefully, for the most part, co-existed. Of course, some religious types viewed these 'Godless Creatures' as abominations, but they were mostly ignored by the more enlightened and aware of humanity and Anthropomorphic people alike.

“Silly advertisement and even sillier app - “ Daniel murmured quietly, as he unlocked his vehicle and then opened the door.

If it's so silly, why are you still thinking about it? Come the thought in his mind.

Why indeed...

That night, Daniel sat alone in his apartment, having consumed dinner and later, showered, he sat in his boxer shorts on the couch and flicked through the channels. With a heavy sigh, he turned off the television and laid back on the couch. His hand pulled his phone up off the coffee table – almost of its own accord – and he stared at it for several minutes.

“It's got to be a scam, a way to harvest personal information and biometric and ..." Daniel laughed quietly. “It's got to be – really, a Cervid..."

Images, fantasies really, began to form in his mind. A Whitetail Cervid, kind of heart – then again – most Cervid he'd ever met, were exactly that – not too tall of stature...

Daniel snorted, having dozed off on the couch, his phone now laying face down on the floor. Sitting up, Daniel placed a palm to his forehead, feeling the sudden blood rush leaving him momentarily dizzy. Leaning forwards, he picked up his phone and saw he had a new message – a message originating from an app he had no recollection of installing...

“Welcome to Rutter: The Cervid Dating App – thanks for downloading and setting up your profile! We've searched our database and we feel we've got the perfect match! Here at Rutter, we value your privacy, and as such – we never divulge our clientele's information to outside third parties! We here at Rutter would like to introduce you to someone we're sure will fulfill all your needs – as you, in turn, fulfill his!"

“Uh - “ Daniel blinked, then laughed quietly. “This is a joke, it's got to be – alright, who's my match..."

Sliding his thumb right, Daniel's eyes instantly went wide, as he saw the selfie photograph on the screen. It was almost an identical match to the idle fantasy he'd had before – almost – but not quite.

“Willow - “ Daniel murmured, zooming in on the small writing, to make the profile easier to read. “5'6, 125 lbs... wow – that beautiful body, almost - “

Doe-like, I would say – definitely effeminate. That fine musculature beneath the fur, fur that is a rich, vibrant reddish-brown, the white from the throat down to that adorable cream-coloured fur of the chest plate through to I imagine, his groin and thighs! His eyes, look at his – eyes – bedroom eyes, admit it. Those large, expressionate woodland brown eyes you could stare into for hours at a time... Those leaf-like ears, imagine how soft they are between your fingers...

Daniel blushed, his neck to the top of his head turning crimson, as he swallowed and felt stirrings – stirrings he'd never imagined he'd feel for another, let alone a Cervid...

“Hello," Come a voice from the phone speaker as the introductory video began from Willow. His voice – it melted Daniel's heart, it was soft and soothing, with a slight tremble in it, that gave it such a vulnerable quality in its timbre and pitch. “My name is Willow, I'm twenty-three, college-educated..."

Daniel's mind went blank, lost in the imaginative fantasy of just talking to Willow – let alone anything else...there couldn't be anything else – could there?

You'll never know, if you don't try to reach out – His calm, rational mind told him. Willow is almost perfect, isn't he? You can sense that – rightness – about him, soft, sensual, submissive – yet like all Cervid, patient, understanding, welcoming – a heart of gold beats beneath that furred chest, they're notorious for their love of life – and those they call – lover...

“Um..." Daniel began, his phone showing a blinking microphone symbol as he recorded a message. “Willow? Hi – I'm Daniel, I'm twenty-six, six foot one, and..."

Daniel slept with such wonderful dreams that night, dreams of a rich, full life with that beautiful, effeminate doeish stag in his arms...

*

Next morning, he heard his phone buzz and buzz. Thinking it was the alarm to get him ready for work, his hand snaked out from beneath the bed and slapped around the sideboard – until it found the phone. Dragging it back under the warm covers, Daniel mumbled, more asleep than awake. His thumb navigated to the snooze button and swiped left – but the buzzing continued.

“Urgh, alright already – I'm up – I'm up..."

Throwing aside the covers, Daniel groused and dropped his phone onto the bed as he rubbed at his eyes and his fingers probed over the stubble on his face and chin.

“Urgh, it's...what time is it?"

Snatching up his phone again, he turned his bleary gaze upon it, seeing the time as 5:45 am.

“Who in the darkest depths - “ Daniel growled in irritation. “THIS is way too early and..."

Again, his phone buzzed in his fingers with that insistent, annoying tone. Swiping off the screen, he input his seven-digit code and the home screen splashed up with a bubbling sound.

“This had better be good - “ Daniel growled, then his eyes blinked as he saw the message on the home screen.

“Hi, Daniel? Oh, I'm -so- embarrassed! It's Willow, from the Rutter Dating App. I just - “There was a soft, beautiful giggle before the voice spoke again. “I'm...oh, I'm so shy – please, forgive me. I saw we got matched and after that beautiful, heartfelt video and message you sent last night..."

I did? Daniel frowned and thought to himself.

“I – I mean, if it's okay with you – I'd love to meet you, in person – tomorrow, its Saturday, at Finley's Restaurant? Say, oh, 1 PM? Would that be okay? Oh, please, please say yes?"

With a beep, the message ended and Daniel stared across the room, his mouth hanging open and eyes unseeing. Without realizing it, he opened the messaging app and replied quickly.

“I will see you there, 1 pm, I promise..."

Before he had second – or even third doubts – Daniel shut off the phone and dropped it back onto the bed.

“I'm doing this...really... doing this..."

*

Daniel was freshly showered, shaved, and looking dapper and formal, in a smart casual white linen button-up shirt, the arms rolled up just past his elbows, a few buttons undone from the neck down to his chest. His shirt was tucked neatly into the beige cargo shorts and his feet encased in matching beige loafers. On his right wrist he wore a small, unobtrusive wristwatch with a leather band, and on the left wrist was a silver bracelet – a gift from his late mother.

Sitting before him, was a bouquet of a dozen red long-stemmed and thorn-less roses, wrapped with a beautiful red bow. Even from a few feet away, passing patrons outside the restaurant either stopped – or slowed – to inhale the aroma of the roses.

“I'm actually doing this - “ Daniel whispered, his nervousness growing by the second.

He twitched as the nearby town hall clock chimed – then as if by magick, Willow rounded the corner. His cloven hooves sparkled in the early afternoon sunlight and Daniel's heart launched itself into his mouth as he took in Willow's physical appearance.

Willow was majestic, proud yet, beautiful – in the way all Cervid carried themselves in public. He wore a light, sleeveless top, almost gauzy and see-through that fluttered with every hoof step, It was cut short, exposing his creamy white belly fur and a deep V neck that likewise showed the chest fur. It highlighted his sensual curves and musculature and Daniel's heart skipped a beat – or two.

From the waist down, he wore white, tight-fitting denim shorts that hugged his hips and the short hems had been frayed fashionably. Those slender legs with the reddish-brown fur ran down to small and dainty cloven hooves that'd been cleaned and polished to a glass-like shine.

“Willow, I presume?" Daniel stammered, picking up the roses and holding them against his chest.

“Daniel?" Come that sweet, beautiful voice in a querulous whisper, before those dark brown eyes went wide and the black-tipped ear – ears Daniel noticed, had been affixed back with a silver band.

“I... wow - “ Daniel blushed, he couldn't help it. “oh, forgive me – these are for you..."

Feeling like a schoolboy with his first crush, Daniel thrust the roses forward. Willow's pale-furred paws reached out and ever so tenderly touched Daniel's hands – lingering there – both human and Cervid's eyes locked on each other – their touch like two star-struck lovers – before Willow gently took the flowers.

For a few heartbeats, Willow stood like a deer in headlights – eyes wide and unblinking, before a beatific smile spread across his pale muzzle and he buried his leathery nostrils into the roses.

“Oh..." Willow breathed in the scent, his head tilting back and eyes closing. “They're beautiful... thank you, but you shouldn't have – really – they're..."

Willow blushed, hanging his head and gently putting the roses back on the table, before he clasped his paws behind his back, giving a shy, sheepish grin.

“Is something wrong?" Daniel asked.

Willow squirmed worse, before he looked down at the roses, then back up, pulling his chair away and sitting down, visibly trembling.

Was it nerves? Had Daniel done some socially-awkward offense to this sweet, beautiful creature?

“Please, Daniel, sit - “ Willow smiled, gesturing to the chair opposite him.

Daniel sat, his dreams and hopes plummeting down about his ankles, as he struggled to imagine what he may have inadvertently done. Willow smiled nervously, then reached over and ever so tenderly placed his left paw on Daniels, then began to slowly stroke and caress.

“Roses..." Willow began, then glanced down at them, before back up into Daniel's eyes. “To we Cervid..."

I've done something terrible... Daniels's thoughts filled him with dread.

“I, I'm so sorry Willow – if..."

Willow cocked an eyebrow, then smiled shyly and shook his head gently from side to side. “Oh, no, please! You misunderstand! It... Roses, for we Cervid...oh, this is so embarrassing and awkward... Roses are... a – I mean -

Willow's paw quivered and he hung his head in shame and guilt.

“We do not give our potential mates – Roses – as they're, well..."

Willow swallowed the lump in his throat, then leaned forwards conspiratorially. Frowning, Daniel did the same, then he felt Willows's sibilant whisper against his right ear, Willow cupping his paw beside his muzzle as he whispered.

“Roses, have an aphrodisiac effect on us Cervid..."

Daniel's mouth fell open, as Willow giggled ever so softly, then lipped Daniel's ear lobe gently before letting him go.

“Just so you know..." Willow breathed into Daniels's ear.
