The next chapter for Lancefree. The newly formed Vespera hive finishes it's first structure and makes plans for what they will do next to expand the hive.

Chapter 3

Many hands lighten the load may be a human saying, but it fits the Vespera perfectly.

Laura, Melina, Issac, and Aidan had managed to scrounge up a large stockpile of food from around the park and the surrounding woods. The food was necessary not just for nourishing the nymphs post conversion, but for the production of construction gel. This organic substance was the basis of Vespera structures, even in the case of remodeling native buildings like the Haunted Mine attraction. The nymphs still lacked the organs necessary to produce construction gel, but could easily manipulate what Kirdallirth produced, they just needed to keep her well fed. After several hours of work the inside of the ride had been transformed as thoroughly as they were.

The interior had been converted into a brood chamber. The walls were now lined with small cells, perfect to hold a fertilized egg and young larvae after they hatched. There were now far more benches to accommodate future conversions. The once flat black plywood walls now felt almost alive as the organic material shimmered. The old electric lights were replaced with bio-luminescent bulbs that emitted a soft warm light, adding to the overall cozy feeling of the chamber.

In the center of the brood chamber the hive-mates lounged on what was essentially a couch crafted out of the old ride cars. The feeling of accomplishment radiated through the group link. Laura passed around the sandwiches from her backpack, having saved them as a treat when the work was done.

“It's almost like a feast after chowing down on dead leaves and twigs." Melina said after taking a bite. She then carefully brushed the crumbs off her pink carapace. “But to be honest, they didn't taste as bad as I thought they would."

“Considering I ate a pack of napkins about an hour ago, I have to agree with you." Issac chuckled and his shiny blue carapace shimmered in the soft light. “And didn't you eat my shirt?"

“Melina ate mine too, but at least she left me my jeans." Aidan smirked. “Actually, I think I preferred the twigs over those protein bars Coach Robins tried to shove down our throats back in school." The red one's antenna swayed as he shook his head.

“I bet they would taste fine now with our new pallets." Laura said as she reclined in her black carapace. “We really can eat anything organic after all."

“It is a gift that allows us to survive in balance with the planet." Kirdallirth said as she sat on a large seat that could easily accommodate her secondary abdomen. “But we have a long road ahead of us before balance can be achieved."

“One step at a time, Mother." Laura smiled softly. “After all, we've only just built a single brood chamber."

“And I'm beyond pleased to have it within my first day of being a broodmother. I now have a proper place to implant eggs, or lay and hatch them as I see fit. I am going to need a lot more than just four children to fix the world." she smiled at the nymphs. “Speaking of which, I need to plan out our next few steps. Broodmother or not, the entire hive has a say in such matters so let us discuss. What are your thoughts and ideas?"

The four Nymphs quietly thought as they finished the sandwiches. Aidan sat up straight and looked between his friends before starting to speak.

“I think the first thing we should do is bring Mullinhill into the hive. Our old hometown is the closest bit of civilization to the park, I mean, our hive. It's a small town, sure, but they would be the first to respond to us, so it's better that we make the first move. We could multiply our numbers by a couple hundred at least, and more importantly share what we now have with our families and friends."

“Of course I care about Mullinhill and the people in it," Laura responded, “but there are just four of us and Mother. We don't even have our secondary abdomens and stingers yet so we would need to rely on her for that and implanting the eggs. Maybe it's just the hive guardian in me talking, but I don't like the idea of Mother being exposed to danger being out and about in Mullinhill. There are plenty of people who will react to her by grabbing their shotguns, and you know it." Melina and Issac nodded in agreement. “And if we lose Mother, it's all over for our hive."

Aidan sighed and slouched down on the couch. “Those are good points. I just wish we could do more."

“Relax Aidan," Kirdallirth said in a soothing tone, “you will mature fully in time. It would take months for a freshly hatched larva to even become a nymph, you did that in just a few minutes. Give your body some time to adapt to being a Vespera."

“I understand all that, I'm just the sort of person who hates to sit on the sidelines." Aidan crossed his arms over his chest.

“Even if you were fully mature, your true place would be in here, tending to me and the future little ones as a drone. However, I suppose until we have a more sizable hive we will all have to meet whatever needs arise."

“I know it was just dumb luck that we decided to go urban exploring in an abandoned amusement park," Issac smiled a bit, “but is there some way we could attract other people to come out here? You handled the four of us on your own. With the rest of us, handling small groups should be even easier."

“I'm sure there's a few people who might come out like we did to see the park before it's gone." Laura nodded. “And there's no shortage of curious young people who would only need to hear it mentioned before trying to sneak in."

“Maybe before that we should just grow the hive, um, the old fashioned way." Melina said her blue multifaceted eyes shifted between Kirdallirth and the two drones.

“Wait…can we?" Issac blinked his bright red eyes.

“That part of your anatomy is fully formed and functional." Kirdallirth couldn't help smiling, “So yes you two can, ahem, fertilize my eggs and in a few days we could have some larvae crawling around here."

“Right, but, you just said it would be months before they would even be nymphs, let alone fully mature Vespera." Aidan sighed.

“But if we take our time we can safely build our numbers without anyone noticing before it's, well, too late for them to do anything but join us." Melina shrugged her shoulders.

Kirdallirth nodded. “That is a good point, Melina. We can have time to fortify our position and once we have enough hive members even start to burrow underground to further expand our hive."

“Oooo, we could tunnel all the way to town and then sneak up from underground into Mullinhill." Melina was getting excited at the prospect.

“Yeah but that would take what, months? Maybe a year? Someone is going to notice something is up with Firefly Mountain long before we could even start a tunnel." Aidan shook his head. “We need a faster solution than that."

“Hmmm…" Kirdallirth's antenna twitched as she focused on the problem and the input from her hive. “You have all raised some interesting points. I agree that Mullinhill is both a threat to our hive and a source of new Vespera at the same time."

“Is there anyone else in town smart like Laura who can be convinced to join us?" Melina asked her friends.

“Probably not, unfortunately," Aidan shook his head, “and there will be a lot more idiots like I was."

“Don't be too hard on yourself." Issac put his hand on Aidan's shoulder. “I know a lot of that was just fear of the unknown."

Aidan smiled slightly at the blue nymph. “If only we could explain to people what it's like to share the group link. The rest is just a bonus compared to that."

“Perhaps we can, after a fashion." Kirdallirth smiled as a plan started to form. “You all probably don't need the group link to tell you that larvae are defenseless, They can barely even bite until they mature into nymphs. However, they do have some abilities even at that young stage in their life." The four nymphs leaned in closer to Kirdallirth as she continued to explain. “If a larva makes physical contact with an intelligent being they have a unique trick. They can hide their presence from the being."

Melina blinked. “They turn invisible?"

“No, they are still quite visible to everyone else, the target just can't see or even perceive them at all, they even forget that the larvae exist. The little guy then will generally crawl and slip under clothing or what have you to hide and hitch a ride with the unsuspecting host."

“Wow, that is quite a trick for a defenseless little thing." Laura seemed impressed. “Can we do anything like that?"

“I'm afraid not, only young larvae have that ability. After a few molts they lose the ability."

“So," Aidan leaned forward, “how does this help us exactly?"

“It's two-fold. First of all, it gives us eyes and ears in Mullinhill through the group link , letting us know ahead of time if the town is getting suspicious of things out here. Secondly, through the larvae we can give the humans a small taste of the group link , sharing that experience with them, and hopefully convincing them to come to the park to both return my little one, and to join us fully as a member of the hive."

“Won't they know instantly what's going on?" Laura sounded concerned, “Once they start feeling the link they will know, if they don't think they are just going crazy."

“You've already forgotten haven't you? Unlike Vespera, humans need to sleep."

“Oh, oh wow, I haven't even noticed." Melina shook her head. “I guess I just didn't feel that kind of tired, just kept going without giving it any thought."

“Yes, we still rest, but we don't sleep. When the human host falls asleep is when the larva will let them feel our link. What can not be explained will instead be shown to them. They will rationalize it at first as just a dream. You can share the warmth and love of the hive with them, and influence them to come and join us."

“The little guys will be alright, won't they?" Melina asked with concern.

“They will absorb food from the host, and the host in turn will at most only feel a little extra hungry."

“There's a chance of being spotted by someone other than the host." Laura warned.

“A newly hatched larva is rather small, and it will hide easily under clothing, so while possible it's not overly likely. Also, giving the little ones a chance to be out of the brood chamber will be good for them. A little real world experience and adventure you could say."

“If you're sure about this plan, we'll do what we can to help you with it." Laura conceded.

“I know you all will. However, for the next step in the plan I will specifically need the help of our two drones, or else there won't be any little ones."

Melina giggled as she got up off the improvised couch. “I'm sure Laura and I can find something to do in the meantime."

Laura chuckled as she got up. “You know with the group link we'll still feel a bit of it anyway."

Kirdallirth looked back at her and smirked. “And you will get your chance in reverse later, I'm sure."

Issac and Aidan looked a little embarrassed by the implication, but there was also an undercurrent of excitement as well.

“Keep a look out for anyone poking around." Kirdallirth said as she got up from her seat. “I'm sure you can handle it even without your stingers." She turned towards Aidan and Issac. “Follow me." Kirdallirth said to the drones as she moved towards a large bench.

Laura and Melina left, with the pink one still giggling. Kirdallirth relaxed onto the firm but comfortable bench. It fit every curve of her body perfectly, as she had designed it for just such a purpose. Aidan and Issac weren't the only ones who were excited, Kirdallirth was excited to spawn more Vespera, but was also looking forward to the intimacy as well. The drones needed no instruction or encouragement, vocally or through the link. They climbed up on either side of the broodmother, and gently ran their hands over her multicolored green and purple carapace.

Kirdallirth made a melodic cooing sound. Inside her body she could feel the eggs already shifting into position. She reached up and pulled Aidan into a long kiss. The drone responded immediately, returning the kiss with a passion. The slit between his legs opened and a bright red cock started to push its way out. Kirdallirth coaxed it out with one hand, while holding Aidan close with the other three. Her clawed fingers traced over every bump and ridge of the red shaft. Aidan released a few coos of his own as she teased his shaft.

Along with Kirdallirth's personal excitement building, she could feel Aidan's as well through the link. This was already more intimate than anything a human could ever experience, and her partner wasn't even inside her yet. Issac watched while gently stroking Kirdallirth's body. He too was privy to the emotions flowing through the link. Without being asked by either the broodmother or Aidan, he helped to shift the red drone into place on top.

Kirdallirth's cooing grew louder as she helped to guide the alien shaft into her body. The sensations were almost electric. She pulled Aidan into her body deeper, wanting more of it, needing to be filled. He gladly responded, groaning as he pushed deeply into her. Feeling both his own pleasure and Kirdallirth reflected through the group link took him to places he had never experienced in his old life. Issac started to coo as well, as his blue shaft slipped out, Kirdallirth reached over with one hand to stroke and tease him even as Aidan continued to thrust.

The sounds of the three Vespera blended together into a melody of passion. It was all too much for Aidan to handle, even with his altered mind. Throughout the group link there was a white flash of passion and pleasure as the red drone delivered his first load of Vespera seed into Kirdallirth.

Issac was breathing deeply. Not only had witnessed it all, he felt the pleasure and emotion shared through the group link . Not to mention, the loving strokes and teases Kirdallirth's hand continued to give his shaft. He watched as Aidan cuddled and held tightly onto Kirdallirth, not wanting to pull away. For several moments she returned his embrace until she felt things starting to shift in her body. Very gently Kirdallirth pushed up with her arms and the drone responded immediately. As he pulled out, his cock was already starting to slip back into his body.

Kirdallirth groaned, though it was definitely not out of pain, as her ovipositor started to extend out of her body. The two drones couldn't help thinking back to their conversion, but there was time to reminisce later, they had a duty to perform.

“Here…here they come, make sure they don't fall!" Kirdallirth said letting out a gasp before the first egg started to push its way out.

Kirdallirth closed her eyes and cooed loudly as the first egg left the tip of her ovipositor. It wasn't as intense as the fertilization had been, but with her body still reeling from the session, it was hard for her to even form a thought. Still, she felt the presence of her hive, there to reassure her and share in the moment.

Aidan was there to catch the egg before it had a chance to even roll. It was warm and slightly sticky, but holding the small oblong egg in his hand, he could feel the life already starting to form inside of it and felt a swelling of pride for his part. With every egg that was pushed out, Kirdallirth felt a burst of pleasure and accomplishment in the growth of her hive. With Issac's help Aidan gathered up all the eggs, twelve in total. They carefully transferred the eggs to the incubation cells they had helped to construct earlier. They whispered little words of encouragement to the eggs as they were safely stored to grow and eventually hatch.

Kirdallirth watched from her bench, still catching her breath. The fertilization and laying had been intense, but deeply satisfying. She just needed a moment before trying for another clutch with Issac. She knew that one day this would be her entire existence, just being fertilized and laying eggs. Of course she would continue to monitor and guide through the link not only her personal hive, but the others that would be established by her future daughters. She was the Broodmother of Earth, and it was her destiny, but it wasn't a bad one, and certainly she would never be alone.

Issac and Aidan returned to her side and she welcomed their sweet touches and kisses. There was no need for words. Issac did not take long to be ready again, and he took his place. Kirdallirth cooed as she pulled him down onto her body. Aidan and Issac joined in cooing as the blue drone pushed his way into her body. If anything this second round was even more intense. She didn't know if it was from the egg laying or if she was oversensitive from Aidan, and in the end the broodmother didn't care. Kirdallirth gripped Issac tightly with all four other arms, almost to the point of cracking his blue carapace. Feeling her intensity only drove Issac to pound her harder. He couldn't think, only feel the nearly electric sensations racing over his body and through his mind. Issac cooed loudly as he couldn't take it any more.

The blue drone nearly collapsed on top of Kirdallirth. He was pulled into a cuddling embrace by the broodmother and he felt Aidan's hands gently rubbing his back as he joined in cuddling as well. Issac barely had the time to recover before it was time for Kirdallirth to lay her second clutch. After that the broodmother was completely drained. If she was still capable of sleeping, she would have passed out.

“You stay here with her, Issac, I'll get some food." Aidan said in a soft voice before slowly pulling away.

“No problem, she must be starving after laying twenty four eggs."

“Mmm, that's nothing, I'm just getting started." Kirdallirth sighed and stretched out her body. “And what about you two?" She asked in a slightly dazed voice.

“It's our job to attend to you, remember? Let us do that." Aidan smiled as he went to the food stores.

“We'll grab a snack later, but right now you and the eggs are our concern." Issac nuzzled her cheek softly. “And the eggs are all snuggled into their cells."

Kirdallirth smiled and relaxed against the blue drone.

Laura couldn't help but smile as she watched the young Vespera larvae playing with each other. They inched around like cute little caterpillars in a variety of colors with oversized bright eyes. The resemblance was only in passing, as they were significantly larger, each one was about as long as her hand was wide. Still they would one day grow to be as big as any of the nymphs. Currently they were having fun pushing around some balls Issac had taken from the midway games. The balls were huge, relative to the small larvae, but they were working together as a hive to push the balls around.

“Sorry to disrupt you game guys, but I need a few of you to come with me on a little road trip." Laura said as she stepped into the sunken corral area.

There was a wave of excitement as the black nymph entered the play area. They loved spending time with the more mature members of the hive. At this point in their lives the larvae had more feelings than thoughts in the group link, but they were still welcome members of it. Before Laura could even slip her backpack off her shoulders, several of the little ones were already crawling up her legs.

“You are all excited to go out on a little field trip, but I can't take all of you with me." Laura said as she opened the backpack.

“How many are you taking with you?" Aidan asked as he carried over a large container of food for the larvae..

“Mother is sending me out with eight tonight, then another eight tomorrow." She gently pulled a purple larva off her leg and deposited her into the open backpack. “As for the last eight, they will just stay here with us."

Laura proceeded to fill her backpack with another seven other of the multi-colored larvae. She could feel the bundle of excitement as carefully zipped the bag shut. She reassured Aidan one final time she would keep the little ones safe before heading out. As she stepped out of the brood chamber. She paused to take in the star filled night sky.

Time for a little adventure.

Laura opened the door of Aidan's old civic, he hadn't bothered to lock it after moving the car inside the front gate. Laura adjusted the seat back before climbing inside. It felt strange sitting inside a car again after her transformation. Being surrounded by metal and synthetic material felt slightly uncomfortable to her now, but she had no other choice unless she wanted to walk into town. Laura placed her backpack on the passenger seat and threaded the seat belt through the straps. The pack shifted and squirmed as the passengers inside moved around.

“Alright, that should keep you guys safe until we get to town." Laura gave the backpack a gentle pat then started the car.

She drove slowly to the gates where Melina was waiting to shut them after she left. They exchanged a wave before Laura pulled out onto the parking lot. She almost forgot to turn on the headlights as her Vespera eyes had no issue seeing in the night. The last thing Laura wanted was to attract any attention, as that was half the point of using the car. There was no one on the highway when she turned onto it. As she headed down the road towards her old home of Mullinhill she wondered where she should start for the evening. She considered her mom's place, but knew her mom was always up late on the computer, while her brother played his K-Box in his bedroom almost as late. That meant there was little chance of sneaking up on either of them asleep, at least at this time of the night.

Let's see, it's a Tuesday night, there should be plenty of people home and in bed. Even Corinne stays in on Tuesdays. Laura thought some more about her old friend. I know she's still sneaking out of her bedroom after her parents go to bed at eight-thirty, like she was still in high school. Then again, I wouldn't want to confront my parents either if they were like Mr. and Mrs. Chase. I bet her window is unlocked, and I should have no problems climbing a tree with my new body. I think that's the perfect place and person to start with.

Laura smiled as she crossed over the city limits of Mullinhill. She pulled her car off the road and onto a dirt track just within a patch of brush. From here on she would go on foot, relying on her superior eyesight and black carapace to remain unseen. She retrieved her precious cargo from the passenger seat and could feel the excitement of the little ones.

“Don't worry guys, I'll find you all some nice people to hang out with." She whispered as she slipped the backpack on over her shoulders.

Like most small rural towns, Mullinhill got pretty quiet once the evening rolled in. There were still plenty of lights on in homes, but the outside was deserted. Still, Laura didn't take any chances as she moved quickly from shadow to shadow, her eyes and other enhanced senses were on alert for anything that could give her presence away..

This would be even easier if I had my wings. She lamented as she climbed easily over a wooden fence and dropped down to the backyard on the other side.

She looked around to the neighbor's yards and saw nothing, not even a cat milling around. Laura then turned her attention to the Chase family's home. Every light was off, even the back porch light. She quietly made her way to a large maple tree and started to climb. With her clawed hands and feet it was as easy to climb the tree as a ladder. Carefully she lowered herself onto the steeply sloping porch roof and went to the widow. Laura inspected the widow. Apparently Corinne's parents had finally upgraded from the ancient wooden windows to modern vinyl insulated ones. Still, when she tried the sash it slid open easily.

You'll never change, will you Corinne? Laura carefully pushed up the screen and slipped into the bedroom.

The only light in the room was a soft glow from a digital clock on the nightstand. Corinne was asleep on her side, softly breathing. Stepping as lightly as she could, Laura walked to the bed and slipped the bag off her shoulders. She unzipped the bag slowly, afraid even that soft sound might disturb Corinne's slumber. Almost immediately several of the larvae popped out of the top of the bag and took in the new surroundings. Laura picked the purple one up gently.

Just one of you gets to hang out with Corinne, at least until she joins the hive. Laura carefully placed the larva on her friend's back.

Corinne shifted and twitched for a moment before the larva inched her way into close contact with her skin, then the human relaxed back into deep sleep. The little one hid herself under Corinne's long hair and settled in. Laura noticed a faint presence in the group link and smiled. It wasn't quite the same as a member of the hive joining, but Corinne was still there. Laura reached out, sending some love her way before collecting the other larvae and backing away to the window.

I hope you will join us soon. She thought before slipping back out the window.

***

Corinne's mind drifted through a dreamscape that was more or less a representation of her old high school, only with a portcullis and a drawbridge at the main entrance. She was rushing, afraid of being late for a test in Mr. Dark Knight's math class. But then something changed, the anxiety of being late just seemed to melt away. Corinne slowed to a stop in front of a random classroom. She felt something in the classroom, it was hard to describe but she couldn't resist at least looking in.

It looked like a normal classroom, apart from the torches lining the side walls. The room was mostly empty, just four students were sitting at the desks, chatting with each other. She wasn't sure but she felt like she recognized them, only they all had big insect-like antennas coming out of their heads. Despite the weirdness though, it felt like an inviting atmosphere. At the front of the class there was a chalkboard. In an elegant script it read, Hive Dynamics 101 with Ms. Kirdallirth.

“Hey! Corinne!"

She turned and realized it was her friend Laura waving at her.

“Hey Laura, what is this class?"

“Why don't you just sit and find out? I know you'll enjoy it."

Completely forgetting about the math test, Corinne took a seat next to Laura. “When is class starting?"

“Oh, in a few minutes. We're just waiting on a few more people, that's all."

Kirdallirth was sitting at a picnic table by the food court. She was enjoying the warm sun on her carapace as she tapped away on her work laptop. She had to be careful typing with her claw tipped fingers, several of the keys already had scratches and divots. Kirdallirth was writing a report about Firefly Mountain Park. Most of it was a complete fabrication as she hadn't inspected any rides since her encounter with the missionary spawn. It didn't matter anyway, as the park was now going to be her central hive, but she needed to delay anyone coming to investigate the park or the whereabouts of 'Todd'.

The report was easy enough to make up, but she was at a loss about what to do about her old job. Quitting was an option, but what to do about her truck, laptop, and other company property. She couldn't exactly strut into the office to return them all. In the end, all she could do was put in a request for some time off. It would at least buy her a week or so to figure things out. With her tracks covered with her former boss, at least for the time being, Kirdallirth turned her attention towards a more local issue.

Her smartphone would be far more of an issue than the laptop, no longer having fingertips covered in skin. But then Kirdallirth remembered the stylus pen she had received at a conference as some swag. Luckily she had stored it in her laptop bag in case she ever needed it. Kirdallirth used the pen to fairly easily type in her pin number.

Glad I didn't go for a thumbprint unlock. She smiled slightly as she pulled up her contacts.

She tapped out a quick message to Greg, the security guard who looked over the park.

Hey Greg, this is Todd,

the engineer inspecting

Firefly Mountain I'm just

about done with my work

here, and I'll need you to

stop by to retrieve the

keys and lock everything

up.

Ah, ok, I was starting to worry

if you forgot to return the keys

I'll stop by At the end of my

shift to collect them, probably

around 4:30, unless something

happens.

That's fine, no rush, I won't be

leaving until the morning for

my next assignment. Hey, I

remember you telling me how

you met your wife here at the

park

Well, if you wanted to bring

her with you I can give you

both a final ride on the carousel.

It's completely safe and in

working order.

Heh, you know what, I

might just do that. One

final ride could be a good

memory for us. I'll need to

check with her of course.

Of course!

See you tonight either way.

Kirdallirth smiled as she leaned back on the bench. Don't worry, Greg, you will definitely both get a ride on the carousel.
