Supplemental 9.5 - A Subversive Strategy

“Ouch!" Voigt barks and rubs his head as he turns to face the wolf that struck him. “What was that for?"

“For scaring Ember half to death." Cal scowls, his white fur bristling as his eyebrows furrow. “Letting him see Hess coming out of the master's study after his session like that. It terrified him."

Voigt growls and turns away to open the dining room door. “He needs to see us at our worst at some point."

“Not when he doesn't know why," Cal retorts, storming after him, “and certainly not on his first day!" He hurries past the older wolf and stops him dead with a serious glare. “He's still fragile and doesn't know yet what goes on in there. I made sure you didn't witness either of us directly after seeing the master until you'd had your session. You've got to do better than this Voigt, he seems very sensitive."

“Hey I've been really nice to him!" Voigt frowns in contest, but he knows he made a mistake and drops the expression. He sighs and straightens his back, still having to look up to lock eyes with Cal. “Fine, you're right. I should have thought when I saw Hess and told him to wait a bit before going back to his room."

“Good," Cal nods, glad to have convinced Voigt of his misjudgment. “Now I won't feel as bad for distracting him from finishing the gardening." He smiles unapologetically brightly.

“Humph! So that's your game. You can make it up to me tonight with your tongue." He grins, grabbing Cal's collar in an attempt to shift control back into his court.

“Yes sir." Comes the reply, with the smile turned cocky, as though the white wolf had planned this all along.

“You've been around Hess too much. He's turning you bratty."

“You give me too little credit. Maybe I'm just very good at reading you to get what I want." Cal leans forward and pecks Voigt's lips, his usual disarming move, which loosens the grip on his collar and allows him to pull away. “Catch me later," he says with an alluring swivel and saunters off.

Voigt, left to his imagination, watches the slender body drift across the dining room floor like a model on a cat walk. He mumbles “cheeky bitch" under his breath and looks out of the bay windows into the garden at the work left undone.
