Chapter 2: A new awakening in a new world
#2 of A journey through the darkness and the light, a step beyond the worlds we know and into the worlds we imagine the true tale of J
Chapter 2 of my latest story, and a look into our main character's mind.
I don't know how long I was out, but eventually my mind started to wander out of the morass of blackness that was unconsciousness and into the light of consciousness. I stopped at the edge of consciousness and looked around, realizing that my conscious mind was now in the area we all call the subconscious. I glanced around and blinked then said "Man my subconscious is rather empty, dark, and forbidding. No wonder a lot of the stories I come up with have rather gruesome scenes of battle in them." I blinked as I walked along the edge of light and shadow until I came to a sign post with arrows pointing in multiple directions. I blinked and slowly read each arrow aloud to make sure I was really seeing what I thought I did. The first one, which pointed back toward the way I came, led to "Inner Darkness, locked doors, and Unconsciousness." The second arrow which pointed along the path I was following led to "The red light district, imagination, and dreams." I thought about following that one for a few seconds then shook my head and read the rest. The third arrow pointed to my right into the darkness and said "Animal instinct, Memories, Nightmares." The last memory pointed into the light and said "Waking Mind, Consciousness, Cognitive thought, Name, Other Trivial things."
I sighed and shook my head having to resist the urge to explore, then sighed and thought about it for a few more minutes then turned and started into the dark to see what my animal instinct looked like. I didn't think about the consequences I just kept walking, not realizing that maybe it wasn't such a good idea for my conscious mind to stay in the realm of the subconscious to long, because it could cause immense problems. I have the feeling that even if I'd known the consequences, my curiosity would have still won out, so it didn't really matter that I was going into that part of my subconscious, I probably would have done it anyway. I sighed as I realized that the way to my animal instinct was an overgrown forest path and thought back to when I'd walk in the woods around my parent's place.
I smiled slightly at the warmth of the memories then kept walking until I came to where the path split five ways at a clearing. Each part of the path had a figure hanging from a tree branch over it. The first was a wolf, the second a fox, the third a dragon, the fourth a tiger, and the fifth looked to be a raccoon. I blinked and mumbled "What the hell does this mean?" Then I noticed the two figurines in the middle of the clearing which looked like two winged figures fighting. One was monstrous, and the other looked mostly human. I slowly walked toward the figurines, feeling as if they were calling me to them. As I came closer the two figures slowly started to grow into statues that were about six feet tall, which put me at their chin's rather than eye level with them. I sighed and mumbled "Oh I really don't like where I think this is headed, especially because I haven't taken any fighting courses in a long time. Guess it's a good thing Zero is so paranoid about a zombie apocalypse, because he made me spar with him every day."
I slowly stepped back from the two figures and got into a ready stance. The one on the left, who seemed more monstrous, growled darkly. While the one on the right nodded approvingly. I did a backflip away from the two of them as they lunged forward and the stone that was covering them started to fall away. The one on the right swung his sword where my head had just been, and the other slammed his claws where my heart would have been. I smiled at them darkly and said "I'm not going to let you kill me without a lot of effort, so why don't you just let me pass?" The winged figure, who, as the stone started to fall from, I realized was a dark angel, laughed softly and swung his sword again causing me to drop to the ground. The monstrous one, who was starting to look more and more like the demons from Zero and I's dreams, took this opportunity to lash out and slam his claws through my shoulder.
I rolled and barely got out of the way, but his claws still managed to destroy the sleeve of my shirt and cut into the very edge of my muscle. I winced and slowly climbed to my feet starting to get pissed. The angel smiled and said softly "You're faster than we expected, but with an injury like that you're left arm is all but useless." I nodded not needing him to point out what I'd already realized as I'd come to my feet and he said "You could just submit and die quickly, or we can play this game until you're too tired to fight back anymore." I glared at him then slowly took my ready stance again, with a new determination to wipe the smug look off the fallen angel's face, and beat the fuck out of his ugly friend, who was licking my blood off his claws. The demon glanced at the angel and said something in a language I couldn't understand then the angel just laughed. He looked at me and said "Daemon says your blood tastes very sweet, yet it seems almost as if it has corruption to it. So who are you, and how did you get into our domain?"
I growled darkly and said "My name is Jake. As for this being your domain, you are dead wrong. This is my subconscious and YOU ARE IN MY WAY!" I rushed forward and slammed my fist into his stomach as I screamed the last part knocking him back into a tree. His dark friend tried to lash out and damage me with his claws but I grabbed onto his arm and let it carry me back then kicked him in the face. I didn't know what had come over me, but the two of them made me fight harder, and with more determination than ever before. The demon seemed to realize something was different about me and threw me off of his arm then started to circle me carefully. I copied his movements, not thinking about the danger in what I was doing; just planning on ripping his ever loving head off if I got the chance.
He smiled seeing the bloodlust in my eyes then said, in what many girls would call a dreamy voice, "It appears you're a lot stronger then Roxim and I have given you credit for. Being able to completely ignore the pain in your shoulder and use both arms to turn my deadly attack into a counterattack was something most people wouldn't dream of doing. Also the way you sent him flying shows you have a lot more strength then your thin form suggests." I snorted at his seemingly surprised reaction wondering why everyone always assumed that just because I was lean and only appeared to be lightly muscled I was weak.
He seemed to read my thoughts in my eyes and said "I guess that is what we get for assuming things based on appearances." He glanced at Roxim who was slowly climbing to his feet and asked "Are you up for round two, or do I have to fight this kid by myself?" Roxim glared at him then slowly picked his sword up off the ground. As soon as his hand touched the blade it turned from Stone into a beautiful silver sword that glowed with inner light. I studied it and silently swore not to let its blade touch me; otherwise, I was going to be in for a huge amount of trouble. I blinked as everything started to swim before my eyes and Daemon laughed darkly. I glanced at him and he said "Are you enjoying the feeling of my venom coursing through your veins? I was wondering when it would take effect. You see when I slashed you I used my claws to inject my venom directly into your system and see how you would cope. I'm honestly amazed it took this long for you to notice it. You must be a lot stronger than we originally believed."
I growled softly at him then noticed that under each figurine was sitting the animal it represented, as well as a black winged horse, a dog, and a phoenix that was sitting on the back of the dragon. I quickly shoved them from my mind and focused on Daemon and Roxim who suddenly rushed at me from either side. I reacted in a way that can only be called instinctive as I rolled forward and they ended up slashing each other. I smirked then winced as the poison continued to flow through my system then slowly got to my feet and slammed my hand into daemon's chest trying to rip his ever loving heart out. He smirked at me and I quickly withdrew my hand and moved to the side as Roxim thrust his blade forward and ended up piercing Daemon.
The two started arguing as Roxim withdrew his sword then started fighting as they must have been when I'd first walked up. I fell to my knees and coughed up a large amount of black blood then the dragon stood on its hind legs and shouted "ENOUGH!" All noise in the forest stopped and the Dragon studied me then looked at the two of them and said "Everyone, it's time to take your human form, or at least as close as you can get to human. It's time we compared ourselves to this young man who managed to get through the forest with no trouble, and nearly defeat the two who watch over us." Roxim and Daemon nodded to the dragon then stretched slowly and closed their eyes slowly shifting into normal humans. I blinked as the demon turned into a six foot tall guy, with black hair, red bangs, grey eyes that were as cold as mine when someone hurt my friends, and facial features similar to mine except with a scar going down the left side of his face.
The angel, once his wings receded into his back, had platinum blonde hair, blue eyes that seemed as if they were always laughing, a face with no markings and slightly more defined features than my own. His hair was cut short and neat but a few strands stuck out making his hair appear windblown. The wolf turned into someone similar to the demon, but his eyes were gold his features were harsher almost as if a hard life had drawn away all the fat on his body. I caught his eye and he nodded. I blinked then started coughing up blood as I glanced at the fox he was only about 5 and half feet tall and was staring up at me in wonder. I blinked and noticed he had orange hair and his ears and tails showed through. His eyes showed endless curiosity, and I smiled. Next to him was the dog, which had turned into a guy who was about the same height as me, looked similar to Zero in build and hair color, but had light gray eyes, blue tips on his bangs, and a face that reminded me of when I was younger and I'd hung out with a boy named Raymond who was always smiling.
The phoenix was the next one I noticed, unlike the others he still had his wings only they'd moved to his back. He studied me and said "I can heal you if you want." I nodded as more blood came out of my lungs and flowed past my hand. He walked over and touched my cheek, sending healing energy flowing through me. I smiled at him as it became easier to breath then he walked back to the others and mumbled something to the dragon. I noticed the dragon looked the most like me, except he was over six and a half feet tall, had his wings and tail showing and his eyes were silver. He glanced at me and the phoenix followed his eyes then nodded. I watched the two then turned and glanced at the Pegasus. Like the others he had wings, however unlike everyone else his hair went down to about mid back and was white. His eyes were a light brown and he studied me with a gaze that could only be called distrusting.
The last ones I glanced at were the raccoon who had a pair of rings around his eyes, which were light green, he had light brown hair with raccoon ears poking up out of it, and a ringed tail curled around his ankle, and the tiger who was wearing combat fatigues, had green eyes, scars over both of them and was scowling at me. He walked over and we shook hands then I grabbed his wrist as he started to walk away and said "I think you owe me my damn wallet." He smiled innocently and handed it back to me then walked over to the others who watched the exchange with interest. The only two who weren't that phased were the wolf who just snorted, and the dragon who nodded rather sagely as if he'd expected my reaction. Suddenly he motioned for the others to approach and started to speak with them. The wolf waited until he sighed and said "Will you come over here?" He nodded and walked over then listened and tossed in his own ideas.
I realized right away that the dragon was in charge of almost all of them. The only ones who didn't seem to listen to him without a single care were the wolf, the angel, and the demon who seemed to be his equals. The wolf suddenly walked over to me from the others and said "So, what the hell are you doing in our forest." I growled at him and he growled back then the two of us got eye to eye and neither was willing to back down until the dragon and the demon pulled me away, and the angel grabbed his arm leading him away. He glanced back at me and I stuck out my tongue then he pulled loose of the angel and I kicked him under the jaw knocking him flat on his back. The dragon stared at me and I just shrugged as he and the demon let go then popped my shoulder, which was now healed, and stretched.
I glanced at the dragon and said "So, what the hell are you guys doing in my head?" The demon stared at me incredulously while the dragon just smirked and the rest stared at me quizzically. Suddenly the Pegasus blinked and said "Holy shit you're Jake." I stared at him and said "No I'm Mary Queen of Scott. YES I'M JAKE YOU DUMB ASS!" He stared at me slightly taken aback and I sighed then said "Sorry about that, but you guys are on my last fucking nerve. So, why don't you TELL ME WHO THE FUCK YOU ARE AND WHAT YOU'RE DOING IN MY HEAD!!!"
The dragon sighed and said "I'm Drake. You already know the angel and demon, the fox is Kyu, the tiger is Saber, the wolf is Blood, the phoenix is Fen, the Pegasus is Ben, the raccoon is Riley, the dog is Dexter. You could say we're your instincts and emotions." I stared at him surprised then burst out laughing and said "Oh gods those names are names I keep thinking of for creatures." Drake studied me and said "You are so much like Dex right now it's scary, but when you were fighting I could see blood, Saber, Fen, and myself in you. With that said I think you should wake up." I stared at him and he said "Become conscious, awaken to the real world, and make sure you're not dying. The longer you stay here, the more likely it is your body will shut down." I blinked and thought about it then turned and ran toward the light swearing with every step. I heard Blood call after me "THAT WAS A REALLY CHEAP SHOT YOU PULLED YOU BASTARD!!!!!!! I'LL GET YOU BACK ONE DAY!!!!"
I ignored him and dived into the light as it started to fade then found myself looking at darkness as the voice of a young boy said "Man, first dad goes off into the woods, then a weird light appears where he used to be, then a guy falls out of the sky." I opened my eyes and mumbled groggily "Anyone get the license plate of the truck that hit me?" I started coughing as pain wracked my body then the kid stared at me and said "Well mister glad to see the fall didn't kill you, but what were you doing in that vortex of light?" I stared at him lost and he said "The purple light in the sky?" I was completely lost then my memory caught up to me and I said "Where the fuck is Laurent, and why the hell am I wearing nothing but bandages?" The kid stared at me then said "You know what, I'm going to go get Myka...." Before running off shouting out the name he'd just said. I sighed and lay back with my eyes staring at the ceiling. I couldn't figure out how the hell I got where I was. The last thing I remembered was arguing with Laurent and being thrown into that damn vortex which he said should have killed me.
I blinked as flashes of things came to me, starting with the image of hurtling through a swirling vortex, then slamming into different objects and voices speaking to me telling me how to turn and what to do. I sighed and started to slip back into sleep when I heard a voice say "Domi, I thought you said he was awake." The boy, who was obviously Domi, said "He is awake; he's just starting to fall asleep again." I opened my eyes and watched the two of them as they approached where I lay on a cot. The second speaker was a girl with long black hair that went down to mid back, light grey eyes that seemed to be laughing, delicate cheek bones, a small nose, and a light speckle of freckles over her nose. She studied me and said "Domi was right, you seem alright, but that fall you took should have at least broken something."
I stared at her and said "Where am I exactly?" She smiled and said "You are in the town of Larasia, in the country of Kensu. Kensu is on the land mass known as Arinko, and to the south is the island of Likama. Welcome to the world of Chenari stranger." I blinked and started to reply then the mental exhaustion of travelling through time and space, the physical exhaustion of fighting with Roxim, and the pain coursing through my body made me start to pass out again as the girl said "I hope you are ready for war stranger, because you arrived in the middle of one."
