Chapter 8: The Long Underground

Jared had never had occasion to find out that Pokémon were as good at snuggling as they were, but Ekans proved that to him overnight. Every so often, he would start to stir, and the purple and yellow snake would find a way to squeeze around his head, giving it a gentle nuzzle and cuddle, and he’d drop right back off. That might have been partially due to blood pressure, now that he thought about it, but he didn’t want to bring that up when it was giving him such a good night of sleep.
When morning came and the sun started streaming through the window, he found himself wearing a turban of sorts. The snake had gotten rather comfortable on top of his head, and it was breathing slowly, hissing occasionally, and its forked tongue tickled the back of his head. Jared chuckled to himself, very quietly of course, and slowly lifted himself up. He balanced the snake with one hand against its coils, keeping it from sliding along his head as he sat upright.
A glance towards the shelves in the corner showed him that Pidgey was still asleep, and both Croccy and Bellsprout were still in their balls.
Croccy.
Names. They need names, he thought, looking up at the Pidgey again. That one had been full of pride and vanity, unsurprisingly, and he doubted that the little bird would ever lose that. That could lead to some name possibilities there, but he’d wait until the little one was awake to actually talk them out. Croccy already had one, but Ekans and Bellsprout both needed one.
After last night’s conversation, he never wanted to refer to them as just their species ever again. It felt like calling a person ‘person,’ which immediately felt like they were just something else. Not even really a person.
He reached up, slowly pulling Ekans off of his head and laying the snake down on the bed. The snake opened one eye, glancing at him with a bemused sort of look.
“Was it that warm for you around my head?” he asked.
“Ek…”
“Well, we can make that a thing if you want. But let’s get ready for the day, huh?”
The snake yawned and nodded. As it slithered over to its ball, bumping the front with its nose and sliding in, he heard the little flutter of the Pidgey waking up. It rolled its head back, yawning and clicking its beak a few times before turning to look at him.
“Gey.”
“Sleep well?”
“Pi-pi.”
“I’ll take that as a yes. Before I put you in the ball, mind if we run through a few names?”
The Bird-type shook its head, and Jared offered a couple of names that had come to mind in the intervening minutes. Eagle-Eye, Bright-Wing, and others were offered, but it wasn’t until he reached –
“What about Shimmer?”
That got Pidgey’s attention, and it flared its wings out as far as it could, showing off every individual feather that could be exposed. They were well-groomed, and in the light of the small room, they did almost shimmer. Jared chuckled.
“Alright, then, your name is Shimmer.”
Pidgey nodded, then posed, wings outstretched, waiting to be pulled back into its ball. He called it back, tucking it into his belt, and then sat down. He had a bit of naming to do, then he could shower, and then…well, then they needed to continue their journey to Azalea Town. It wasn’t going to just come to them, after all.
#
In the end, he found names for all of them. Bellsprout got the name Lurch, since it kept lurching away from danger, and Ekans got the name Snugs. He’d offered it a few other names, but it kept wanting to come back to something soft and warm. It was quite the silly little snake.
By the time that he finished showering and getting himself ready for the journey, it was almost mid-day. The nurses at the Pokémon Center had made it clear that he could make it through the mountain via Union Cave in less than a full day, but even this was starting to push it just a little bit. He thanked them for their input and made his way to the cave entrance, curious what he was going to find when they went inside.
As soon as he touched the cave mouth, he heard the chittering and flapping sounds of all too many Zubats. He paused, then sighed.
“And here I thought we left that behind…”
Then again, he didn’t know what he’d expected. They were among the most common Pokémon back in Kanto, right behind Rattatas and Pidgeys, and the old team had been…rather obsessed with them. Here, he’d hoped that there’d be something else in the caves, but it seemed that he was doomed to be finding the old favorites again.
Well, let’s make this quick…
He ducked under the mouth of the cave and slid inside. Thankfully, unlike the one where he and Croccy had gotten…acquainted…this one was a bit more well-lit. It wasn’t bright, not by any means, but it seemed to have a little more light coming in from the outside. Cracks in the walls or something…
Which, now that he thought about it, honestly made him feel far less safe.
Here’s hoping that there’s no bodies to stumble on down there…
He felt his way along the walls, ducking down whenever he heard the flapping sounds of Zubats approaching. They always moved in clusters, somewhere between ten to fifty different bats at once, occasionally with a Golbat right in the center. He didn’t want to get into a fight with them, and he especially didn’t want to let his Pokémon start fighting them. It would just end up with a giant mess of confusion, and while it might be useful for his team to start getting stronger, it wasn’t necessary. Not yet, at least.
Every time that they flapped overhead, he ducked behind a rock, or pressed himself against the wall, going as still as possible to feel like a feature of the rocky cavern. He’d never confirmed it, but he guessed that they tracked intruders by movement, and the less he moved, the more of a natural feature he’d seem to be.
The theory seemed to work. As long as he didn’t move when they were going by, they didn’t seem to be bothered with him, or at least, not bothered enough to do anything about him. That was good enough for him.
However, there was something else to deal with, and that was other Pokémon trainers.
Jared saw his first one when he rounded the little lake that filled the cavern near the exit. He paused at the sight of the rotund hiker ahead, seeing him staring straight towards the path that Jared had to take. Suddenly, the hiker spun to face a different direction, and then a few seconds later, he spun again, facing a different direction again. It was always in the cardinal directions, too, never in a diagonal.
What the hell is wrong with him?
Regardless, he remembered the trainers that he had seen before, particularly the one that had been guarding the route north towards Violet City. They seemed to have some sort of rule that they needed to be close enough to their opponent to declare a challenge, and spot them walking by. This hiker, however, seemed to have planted himself right at an intersection of pathways, trying to spot everyone that might be coming either from the Azalea side or from the Violet City side.
It was more than slightly annoying.
Grumbling, Jared dragged himself slightly to the side of the hiker’s line of sight. No sooner had he done so than the hiker glared, almost as if Jared had broken some sort of rule, or denied the other man some kind of treat.
Well, that’s convenient…
He kept himself flat against the cave wall, making his way further south along the underground lakeshore. He would have tried swimming, but there was no way of knowing how deep that water was, or worse, what might have been in it. There were plenty of Water-types that weren’t exactly friendly to one’s health, and he felt like it was entirely possible for a Tentacool or worse to be in that water.
Soon, he was right beside the spinning hiker, watching as the irked man kept turning and twisting. His eyes were livid, his beard twisted up as he glared at Jared, and it took everything that Jared had to keep from laughing.
The hiker obviously wanted a match, and he was standing right in the middle of a ‘blind spot’ with the rules. Second by second, the hiker spun back and forth between facing north and east, desperately trying to catch Jared in the right spot, but the diagonals seemed to be out of bounds for any sort of challenge. It was driving the man mad, and it was making Jared giggle from way down in his guts.
Still, he had to continue. The hiker was spinning faster and faster, and he knew that there was no way for him to time that right. More to the point, he doubted that the hiker would tire out anytime soon. The big guy looked like the sort that had built up their stamina to an insane degree, despite their build, and he didn’t want to just wait it out, anyway.
So, he tried something silly.
As soon as the hiker twisted around again, Jared ducked down. Not all the way to the floor, but enough to be under the hiker’s line of sight. He walked under the big guy’s gaze, and he was on the other side with no further problems.
“THAT’S NOT FAIR!”
The hiker’s shout shook part of the cavern, and Jared froze in mid-step. He looked up, half-expecting to see a rock fall with all the cracks that were letting in light, but thankfully, no such thing happened. The shake, however, had rattled a few cracks wider, and he knew better than to stick around when something like that was happening.
“See ya,” he muttered.
“You’re not allowed to do that! You’re supposed to fight or sneak around. You can’t just –”
“I just did. Get over it.”
“But – you’re supposed to fight!”
Flutter, flutter.
“Get back here and fight!” the hiker called after him as Jared stiffened and went still. “You get the hell back here!”
“You want a fight?” Jared grunted through clenched teeth.
“Yeah!”
“Well, you got one coming.”
“What – mmmph!”
And just like that, the wandering Zubats found their next meal. Jared shook his head as they darted in and out, biting at the hiker and then pulling back. The little guys wouldn’t be taking much with their little Leech Life attacks, but their Golbat friend…well, that would take a little more from the hiker.
Not that he minded, at this point. He was more concerned about getting out without getting noticed, and so far, that was going about as well as it could have. He left the flock to enjoy their meal, and continued down the path.
Skipping over several other trainers, he found himself walking deeper and deeper into the darkness. The Zubat swarms seemed to have stopped following him, too, meaning that they were probably sticking to the brighter surface bits, nearer to the exits where they could fly out and find their prey on the surface. Down here…
He kept his eyes out for swarms of Paras or other parasite Pokémon, not wanting to have to go to a Pokémon Center with mushroom rot on his legs. It didn’t happen often, but he knew that it was easy to get if you weren’t paying attention. Mt. Moon’s passages were more clogged with that sort of stuff than anyone wanted to admit, and he wouldn’t discount the same thing being possible here.
Nothing bothered him, however. Now and then, he heard the rumble of something much deeper down in the cave, something rattling through the stone, but it was never loud enough to worry him. Sometimes enough to make him pause and make sure that nothing was going to break through the stone ahead, but never enough to worry.
However, just as things were getting close to too dark to see, he saw something flickering in the distance. He paused, and it was a good thing he did. His shoe touched water, and he realized he’d been about to fall into another lake.
Okay…I need someone else around right now…
“Snugs…”
The Ekans popped out almost instantly, almost like he was waiting for his name to be called. The snake hit the ground gently, the silhouette of the serpent looking back at him. Jared gestured down at the snake’s tail, and the big guy lifted it off the ground a bit like a leash, allowing him to get a grip on it.
“Lead on.”
“Ekans…”
The snake did just that, and he was thankful for the lead in the dark. He doubted that Ekans could see any better than he could, but the fact that the snake was actually on the ground meant that he had a chance to feel any pitfalls before it was a danger for Jared. That, combined with the fact that he was holding his snake tightly, meant that there was no danger for the two of them. Any slip or danger was something he could pull Snugs back from, and any danger up ahead was something that Snugs could steer him away from.
It worked out well enough, though it was leading them toward the flickering light in the distance. They were almost upon it, about to walk around the corner when –
“FLASH!”
Suddenly, the cavern exploded with light. Jared was almost blinded, and he stumbled backwards, falling right on his ass. Snugs was hardly any better, squirming back and coiling around his waist. It could have been in fear or in protection, but it was a tight grip, one that kept him pinned in place as he huffed for breath.
“Hey! Someone over there?”
Jared should have guessed that would have gotten attention. He groaned, shaking his head. If they were following the same rules as the other trainers, then they wouldn’t come around and check. He leaned back, waiting for the light to decrease.
Nobody came, and eventually, he could almost hear the shrug and grunt that came with giving up on the idea of someone being in the area. The light started to fade away, not quickly, but slowly, as if the stones themselves weren’t quite willing to give up being illuminated again. He rubbed his eyes, not wanting to get that used to the light down here, but it was taking too long to fade for him to just close one eye and hope for the best.
Eventually, he was able to get to his feet, no longer blinded, and Snugs was able to lead him along the floor. There wasn’t really a need for a living leash any longer, so he walked and Snugs slithered.
They peered around the corner together, head over head, and saw someone in some sort of strange clown get-up around the rocks. He was standing over a Vulpix, going through a series of gestures and displays. Jared and his Ekans shared a confused look, before –
“And Flash!”
This time, they reacted quick enough to avoid being blinded. Even so, the bright light burned against his eyelids, and he groaned under his breath at the sudden burst of light. The worst of it faded quickly, and he was able to open his eyes again shortly after.
The Vulpix was glowing, and he realized that it had to be a move that the Pokémon was practicing with its trainer. It was illuminating the whole cave in the process, too.
Why couldn’t he have been doing that at the start? he wondered. More importantly…how can I do that…
“Heh, that’s great, Vulpix. That’s absolutely amazing,” the clownish man said, rubbing the Fire-type’s head. “Keep this up, and I bet we can get through that cave by Violet City.”
“You’re not here to fight, right?”
Jared spoke without thinking for a change, but as the clown turned around, he felt that it was the right thing to do. The stranger had started lifting a lighter to his mouth in the middle of turning around, almost like he was getting ready to attack himself, but stopped before he could complete the gesture.
“Man, don’t sneak up on someone like that…”
“Sorry.”
“It’s fine, it’s fine. Just…man, I could have lit you up.”
“Lit me up? What, like with that?”
“I’m a firebreather, man. It’s part of the act. Vulpix lights up the cave, I light up the show.”
“…Right.”
“You got something against that?”
“Uh, no, no. Just, um, wondering if you could tell me how that worked.”
And no more about the act, and no more about fire-breathing. Maybe this guy wasn’t the best person to get information from, but this was the first time that he had seen anyone do something like this. It was a purely utilitarian way of using a Pokémon rather than using it to fight, or…other things…and it felt good to see a Pokémon being able to use its abilities just to help out rather than to crush something.
Admittedly, he’d like to learn more from someone else instead of this guy, but it was better to get it from the source rather than look around for someone else with expertise at the moment. If nothing else, he could learn what the technique was called, and then start looking around for more information.
The clown cocked his head to the side.
“What, Flash?”
The Vulpix swelled with light, and Jared cover Snugs’s eyes, while Snugs did the same for him with its tail. They both avoided getting blinded, but when they opened their eyes again, the firebreather hadn’t been quite so quick. He was covering his eyes, groaning and rubbing them frantically.
“GAH! Not yet!”
“So, it’s called…F. L. A. S. H. Right?”
“Nnngh…yeah, that’s what it’s called. Lights up the whole cave. Any dark place, really.”
“I didn’t know that was a move that Vulpix picked up.”
“It isn’t. You need an HM for that.”
“Hmmm…pity.”
“Ow…ow…ow…”
“You okay?”
“Yeah, just…so bright…can’t see…”
Jared opened his mouth, then closed it again. No reason to mock this guy, he supposed. He was doing a pretty good job of it on his own.
Still…There was something else he could do.
“Tell me. Can any Pokémon learn that?”
“Man, you stupid?”
“No, I just don’t know this stuff.”
“Well, nah, not everyone can. A lot, though.”
“Bellsprout?”
“Yeah, he’s one of ‘em. Why?”
“Tell you what. You let me borrow that to teach Lurch that move, and I’ll tell my Water-type to fill up all your canteens, so you can stay out here a while longer.”
“…Guess that’s a pretty good deal. Didn’t think it through coming out here…”
The firebreather reached into his pockets, pulling out something that was shaped vaguely like a disk. Jared arched an eyebrow at the sight of it, but didn’t let the stranger see it; no need for the other trainer to think that he was that inexperienced.
“Croccy,” Jared muttered, tapping the Croconaw’s ball.
Pooooom. The white light flared, then disappeared as the Croconaw hopped out of his ball. Unlike the dance that Totodile had done, this evolution strutted forward, a smirk spread wide across his jaw. The little guy had just started to take a battle pose when he reached out and tapped him on the shoulder.
“Hey, no fighting this time. Just fill up his water jugs.”
“That’s it?” Croccy asked.
Jared waited for a second, seeing if the firebreather would react. Nothing. Good.
“Yeah. Just fill up his water jugs. I’m going to be teaching Lurch a new ability.”
“Ooooh!”
“I only get one, and he’s getting it for now. You just go ahead and fill up the canteens.”
“Awwww.”
He patted Croccy on the back, and the three-foot-tall, lumpy-faced little guy got to work. In the meantime, he tapped another ball, and Lurch the Bellsprout was popped out.
Leaving Snugs and Croccy to deal with the water, Jared puzzled over the machine. The disk opened, he could tell that much, but it was definitely something that didn’t relate to anything that he knew about. He twisted and turned it, holding it out to Lurch in hopes of the Bellsprout understanding it.
Nothing.
Well, this is awkward…
He opened the disk again, feeling it fold in his hands and exposing something on the inside. Some sort of data line? He paused, then gently pressed it against the side of Lurch’s open face.
There was a definite reaction there. Lurch stiffened, eyes going wide and white rather than the little black dots that they had been. They glowed with light for a moment or two, and then faded. Lurch slumped forward, and he barely caught the Bellsprout before he completely collapsed. The little leaves and fronds spilled over him, feeling more like the limp vines of a wall plant than a living Pokémon.
“Hey, uh…is this normal?” Jared asked.
“Huh?” The firebreather looked around his shoulder. “Yeah, that’s about right. They’re learning a lot, you know. Lots of data getting shoved into their itty-bitty brains.”
“…Would you say that about your Vulpix?”
“Nah, but you know how they are. Some of ‘em are dumb as stumps.”
“So are some people…”
“You say something?”
“…I said, so are some people.”
“Hey, I let you borrow that.”
“Yes, for a favor. And now, that’s done. Croccy, Snugs. Come on.”
They fell in step behind him while Jared collected Lurch back into his ball. Even if that was normal, he was a bit worried about leaving the little guy out of the ball at the moment. Until he had a Pokémon Center look into that, make sure that the little plant was okay, he wasn’t going to be putting him out for a fight again.
They were just rounding the corner when he heard Croccy whispering something to Snugs, something about ‘and that’s how that works.’ He turned, arching an eyebrow at the Croconaw and the Ekans, but suddenly, neither of them was meeting the eyes of the other.
Very suspicious.
Shaking his head, he turned his attention back to the path, resolving to make his way out of the cave before they were caught in another light blast.
#
They reached the end of the cave without further incident, though Jared ended up leapfrogging over the hiker that tried to ambush him and start a Pokémon battle. Running down the route – Route 33, he believed – he left the hiker in the dust, and soon rounded the corner of the road towards the town ahead.
To his surprise, however, there was someone standing in front of a well just at the outskirts of town. Someone that he knew.
Shit…Proton…
Jared ducked his head as he walked by the tall, green-haired man in black and white clothes. He hoped that he wasn’t too visible as he hustled by, even as he kept muttering ‘shit, shit, shit’ under his breath. His Pokémon had already been called back into their balls just before leaving the cave, so he didn’t have to worry about that, but still.
Shit. When did Team Rocket get here…
There was no easy answer around. As he walked into town, he saw that there were others, grunts to Proton’s exec. Some blocked the entrance to the local gym, while others walked the streets. They weren’t hiding themselves, either; they were completely obvious, not at all bothered by the possibility of police.
Then again, considering the police in this region…
Shaking his head, he walked over to the Pokémon Center, keeping his head down. Nobody stopped him, and thankfully, there were no grunts or officers in the building. He walked over to the desk, nodding at the nurse.
“I need to drop off a Pokémon for healing; can I borrow a room until he’s done?”
“Of course.” The redhead behind the counter smiled, offering him a key. “Room 204. Second floor.”
“Thank you.”
Hurrying up, he locked the door behind him and collapsed on the couch-bed that was the only furniture aside from a coffee table in the room. He pressed his hands to his face, taking a deep breath.
“Okay, so…Team Rocket…Fuck.”
Most of the world thought that Giovanni disappearing had completely destroyed the criminal underworld, but they were wrong. Even the outfit that he had worked for – funded by, if not entirely part of, Team Rocket – had continued for a while after the ‘boss’s disappearance. Team Rocket might have been under the big man’s iron thumb, but that didn’t mean that he was utterly required for it to continue operating.
And that wasn’t even counting the bits and pieces of the criminal underworld that operated outside of Team Rocket’s purview. There were plenty of smaller gangs that would have taken Giovanni’s disappearance as their chance to try and make it for the big time.
They’d be wrong, but they’d try.
He took another deep breath, shaking his head as he pulled up tight. It didn’t matter what the other gangs were doing, what mattered was that one of them was here. Rocket was trying something in this town, and he didn’t know what. And Proton…Proton had been one of those involved in Project Chimera.
Fuck…if that’s still in operation…
No, no. He wasn’t going to panic. He wasn’t going to freak out. He was going to take a nap, he was going to feel better, and when he woke up, he would decide what he needed to do.
But first…
He called Snugs out, and the Ekans immediately slithered off the floor and onto the bed with him. It trailed itself across his arm and then under it, booping him on the chin before slithering into his shirt. He chuckled a bit at that, petting it through the top.
“You want warmth that bad, huh?”
“Ek-ek.”
“Come on. Why don’t you come up to be a bit more of a pillow, huh?”
“Kans.”
Rather than slithering back around, however, Snugs pushed further down. By the time that Jared realized what was happening, the snake had already popped the buttons of his jeans and had managed to nudge its nose right under his –
“AH!”
He gasped, covering his mouth as the snake’s mouth opened up, gumming along the edges of his shaft. In short order, it was rising up, a forked tongue teasing around the head while jaws that were almost impossibly strong nibbled and tugged at his cock, guiding it into the snake’s mouth.
‘That’s how it works.’
“Fucking…goddammit…Croccy…”
They must have been talking about how he could understand Croccy, and the little guy had probably shared what they’d done. And now, Snugs –
“Ah!”
He gasped as the snake’s coils wrapped around his arms, pinning them to his sides so that even if he wanted to, he wouldn’t be able to wiggle himself free of the Ekans’s grip. He groaned, his toes curling in his shoes as his cock was finally pushed to full erection, trapped inside of the snake’s mouth. Trying desperately to keep his head on straight, he tried to keep from thinking about that tight little mouth, or the –
Mmmph, that throat. The snake was bobbing forward all the way to the base, swallowing him, that dexterous tongue flicking over and around his cock-head, and then down along the rest of the shaft. It was so flexible that it was like a series of fingers playing with him, working him up and then letting him come back down.
He couldn’t stop panting, even as he wriggled this way and that. The snake’s mouth was so…so warm, surprisingly, and there were fangs on either side of his shaft that made him both afraid and aroused. Snugs was so gentle that he doubted that they’d ever get used, but…holy fuck…
He was huffing, puffing, the snake’s tail wrapped around him and squeezing every so often. He wasn’t sure if Snugs was grinding on him or if there was some other bit of moisture rubbing against his back, nor was he sure if Snugs was a guy or girl just yet.
Even that curiosity slipped away as he felt that mouth going further, further, and further down his shaft, taking it right to the base and leaving him gasping…and not just from the pleasure. Snugs was ‘snuggling’ him, alright. Snuggling him right out of air and out of his mind.
His balls were slowly rising up, and the snake attacked his cock with its tongue right over the tip. Jared arched his back against the couch, his last bit of air getting squeezed out as he came from those gentle, teasing licks.
“Ah…ah…ah…”
He gasped as he shot his load down Snugs’s throat, feeling the rippling muscles of the snake’s neck pulling it away. A shivering moan left him as Snugs finally let him go, uncoiling and then laying on his stomach. The snake swallowed visibly a few more times, its tail wrapping around his member.
“You…ugh…” Jared slammed his head down against his pillow. “I’m gonna…I don’t know what I’m gonna do to Croccy, but he’s got something coming.”
Snugs didn’t say anything. It just kept laying on him, gently providing company, and gradually, Jared calmed down enough to nap.
