Life As It Is Ch.10
#10 of Life As It Is
Here's my latest chapter up as a treat for you guys to read before Independence Day! I'll be gone a school trip out of town in a week or so and electronics aren't permitted so I won't be able to write the next chapter until I get back. Don't be expecting it soon. Please fav, comment, and vote if you like it. If the format is weird, just comment me and I'll try to fix it. It looks funky to me but I don't know about you guys. :P

"I don't know what I'm going to wear?! Is this good? How about this one? No...too bright! Ugh!" Iris sat lazily on my bed, watching me ransack my closet and trying on clothes in front of the mirror. I was set on a pair of blue jeans for what I was going to wear today, but I still needed to find something to where for a top! There was a sudden knock at my door before the unmistakable voice of Lance called out to me.
"Hey, Silnis, are you ready yet?"
"No! Umm...I'm not done!" I exclaimed, taking off the shirt I was trying on and instead throwing on a white t-shirt with a white, buttoned shirt with black tribal lettering. I couldn't have timed it any better as Lance decided to just walk in right as I was buttoning up the shirt. He stopped mid-walk and looked at me with impressed eyes, grinning.
"Ok, I'm ready," I said, crossing my arms and looking back at him with a slightly blushed face.
"Wow...do you always dress this nice and beautifully?" he asked, making my blush deepen. I was about to interject until Necross walked in too. He, like Lance, took one look at me and smiled to himself, adding a small whistle.
"I thought we were supposed to do the impressing, but it looks like Silnis wants to play the game too," he snickered.
"L-Let's just get going already!" I told them, marching out of the room in a huff. I only took ten steps before Necross swept me up in his arms, chuckling to himself.
"We're not going to let someone as pretty as you tire yourself out by walking. Let us carry you," he teased, his grip on me saying that he wasn't kidding around.
"L-Let me go! I am perfectly capable of walking! I've fought off swarms of monsters without stopping! What will walking do to me?!" I argued, struggling to get out of his arms. He quickly shushed me by pressing his lips against mine and kissing me for a few seconds before pulling away. "F-Fine...," I complied, receiving a warm smile from him. Necross, carrying me, walked down with Lance beside us to the swirling portal in the main hall of Pacema's sanctuary. The walk from the Private Quarters to the main hall was excruciatingly embarrassing with several warriors and champions noticing us and spreading the gossip. Pacema have mercy on my soul...please....
I didn't know where our destination was, but Lance and Necross apparently did. They did plan this all by themselves without involving me. I could only tag along and see what they had in store for me. Stepping through the portal, I was greeted by a gust of cool, fresh air. My eyes adjusted to my new surroundings before I recognized where we were. Down below us, bustling with activity, was the city of Denver. If we were looking down at it...that means...we were on the Rocky Mountains! I studied the rust-colored rocks around us and it confirmed that we were in fact on the very mountains I thought we were on. I couldn't believe it...we were in Colorado. H-How did they know...?
"Do you like it?" Lance questioned, smiling. I gently pushed myself out of Necross' arms, stepping onto the familiar rocks and kneeling down to touch them. A fine dusting of red covered my fingertips, bringing back memories. "Silnis...is everything all right?" It took me a moment to register what Lance had asked me, but I quickly replied back.
"Huh? Oh...yes. I'm fine. It's just that...how did you two know?" I asked them, standing back up and gazing down at the city.
"What do you mean?" Lance asked, mystified. Necross must have understood from my body language, walking up beside me and laying a hand on my shoulder.
"This was your home...isn't it? Your home before you moved," he concluded, receiving a nod from me.
"Yeah...I was born here. I loved everything about this place from the people, mountains, air, and almost everything.... I haven't been here ever since we've moved. It...brings back memories," I explained in a reminiscent tone. Just standing here I could recall every memory that I had experienced here as a child. I remembered hiking up the lush trials of the Rocky Mountains, swimming in the pristine mountain lakes, living in a small, developing suburb that had everything you needed to live a suitable life. They were all such sweet memories...ones that I've always cherished.
"If it bothers you Silnis, we could go somewhere else...," Lance suggested, probably feeling that I didn't want to be here. I turned and smiled at him, shaking my head.
"No, this is wonderful! You two couldn't have picked a better spot for our first date together!" They were surprised I said the word "date" since I was always the one who didn't fully accept that we were in a relationship, but I could care less at this point. I was home and getting to re-experience everything I had done here as a child is well-worth calling this a date. My stomach growled from not having any breakfast, Lance and Necross taking notice of it.
"Silnis, don't tell me you skipped breakfast?!" Lance asked with slight disappointment.
"What? I was up all morning trying to find some good clothes to wear today. I could hardly find the time to eat breakfast," I argued.
"Well, you could have asked us to bring you breakfast. It would have been nice to see you changing out of your clothes right when we walked in with a tray of food, right Lance?" Necross nudged Lance, exchanging looks with him and the two dragons smiled at the thought of me being half-naked.
"If you two perverts are done thinking about that, how about we go into the city and get ourselves some breakfast? I'd happily let one of you carry me as you two fly there, or I could just use my light magic and get myself there in a flash," I offered to them. I was swept up off my feet in no time by Necross, spreading his wings and taking flight almost immediately. Lance flew alongside us, doing some flips and spins just for show. Necross' dark violet mane would sometimes fly into my face and cause me to shake them off, making him chuckle heartily. Our eyes caught each other's gazes once during the flight and I saw that they were a blend of yellow and pink like the Trix yogurts I used to eat when I was little. It made me giggle to myself comparing Necross' eye colors to yogurt.
"What's so funny?" he questioned, noticing my reaction after our brief eye contact.
"Nothing," I assured him, smiling. He just shrugged, going back to flying. I've been with Necross long enough to distinguish one eye color from another. Yellow, for sure, meant joy. Pink, without a doubt, stood for love and affection. I admit it, but I felt kind of flattered that these two dragons were giving me so much love and attention. It made me feel...safe and content...like everything was going to be all right. Wow...I haven't felt like this for a while ever since I moved from here. Truly...I was reliving every experience I've had in this place.
"Heads up!" Necross cautioned me, coming to a descent just outside the city. He let me down to walk, but he wouldn't let go of my hand, "I'm not letting a pretty soul like you get lost." Lance's hand slipped into mine too, having the same idea.
"Do you honestly believe that I'm going to get lost? Like...really?" I had to ask them. Their only replies were a simple smile and nod. I didn't reply, knowing that these two were intent on pampering me like some child. Letting them lead me into town, I took the chance to admire how much Denver had changed since I've last seen it. There were taller buildings, beautiful street art, and more small stores selling different products. This was still my city...no matter how much it had changed.
Necross and Lance both spotted a nice restaurant while we were walking around the city and pulled me with them inside. I could smell the smoky scent of bacon, the buttery aroma of fresh, hot pancakes, and the sweet syrup. The pleasant sizzling of eggs and sausages being cooked on the hot stove with oil made my mouth water profusely. My stomach did another growl and I was more than ready to eat.
"Table for three, please," Necross asked the waitress. She nodded, smiling, before leading us to an empty table that was adorned with a white tablecloth and a mock bouquet of plastic flowers. I kind of gave the flowers a dirty look. I never was a fan of synthetic flowers. They never brought the fresh, floral feel that real flowers did. Lance released my hand to pull my chair back for me, letting me sit before pushing me back in a comfortable distance from the table.
"Here's our breakfast menu. I'll give you gentlemen some time to decide what you want," she said before leaving to attend to another table. Browsing the menu, I set my eyes on a serving of two pancakes, some scrambled eggs done easy, and of course bacon! I also wanted a glass of orange juice to wash that all down. Calculating the price, I came to the total of about fifteen dollars. Glancing at the two dragons, I knew Necross would treat this as a buffet and gorge himself on multiple platters to satisfy his large appetite. Lance, on the other hand, would most likely eat a decent sized meal. Going back to Necross, I was concerned about how we were going to pay for all the food. Apparently, Necross had that covered.
"Hey, buy whatever you want! I got it covered," he assured me, flashing a debit card in front of me.
"A debit card? Are you sure about this Necross? I mean...you don't have to. I don't want to exhaust your funds," I cautioned him, concerned.
"Nah, my bank account needs a little spending anyways. Besides, I wouldn't mind spending my money on you two! Of course...it does come at the cost of a kiss or two," he snickered, seeing me give him a roll of my eyes. If I have to kiss him just so he can pay the bill...fine! But only...on...the cheek!
"All right, what would you gentlemen like this morning?" the waitress returned and asked us, smiling brightly.
"Umm...I'll have two pancakes, some scrambled eggs, easy though, bacon, and a glass of orange juice," I gave her my order, receiving a nod.
"I'll have the same too," Lance told her.
"And you sir?" she asked Necross. He smiled gleefully.
"I'll have an order of five pancakes, some bacon, scrambled eggs, biscuits, hash browns, sausages, and just leave a pitcher of orange juice here for my drink," The waitress looked stunned at his massive order. I don't blame her. Anyone would be just as surprised to know that Necross had a really big appetite. Some would think that Necross would at least have some pudginess to him, but it just didn't work for him like that.
"Is that all...sir?" she asked, expecting more from him. Necross gave her a devilish look that told her that he could keep going on if he wanted to.
"No, that will be all that he's having, thank you," I quickly interjected. Forget about Necross having a fat bank account. If he's going to go on a spending spree for food than I will gladly keep him in line. The waitress finalized our orders before leaving to the kitchen, leaving us alone for awhile. We all just sat in silence for a bit, hearing people around us make small talk and having a good morning so far. Some kids in the restaurant stared us, pointing out to their parents that there was a small human, me, between two larger dragons. Lance and Necross were quite the imposing figures with their size and physiques. It made me wonder if people thought I was some kid being held against his will by these two dragons. The thought made me chuckle to myself again.
"Something funny, Silnis?" Lance asked me with a grin.
"No, it's nothing. Just thinking about stuff," I told him.
"Well, as long as you're smiling, that's good for me. I don't want to mess things up with you," he said, causing me to blush slightly. I couldn't believe I was going to ask this, but it was already coming out of my mouth before I could think of the consequences.
"Lance...do you...really like me? Necross makes it more than clear that he likes me, but...I haven't heard your feelings yet...," I asked, running a deeper blush. Some part of me was curious to know his feelings about me, and the other was too shy and embarrassed to want to know. I was thinking about taking the question back before he could reply, but he beat me to it.
"I wouldn't have even mentioned this date if I didn't know that I really liked you. At first, to tell you the truth, you did have this profound effect of attraction to me. Everything about you drew me in from your strong personality when we first met to your shining smile and sweet nature. I liked being around you Silnis. I have to thank you...for giving me this chance to truly live in joy. Living like this makes the pain and sorrow all just disappear. I finally get to experience what life really is because I finally have friends and someone to care for. You made this all possible for me, Silnis. Thank you...." After those heart-filled words, Lance leaned forward and pressed his muzzle softly against my cheek, a light kiss of affection.
"Lance...I...don't know what to say," I was lost for words. It's always difficult to have a comment after something as touching as that. Perhaps it was best to just leave it at that.
"Okay, here are your orders!" the waitress returned with Lance and my orders, excluding Necross, "Your order will be here in a minute sir. The cooks are just finishing up the hash browns and pancakes." She set our plates down before returning back to the kitchen where chaos was ensuing. From the few seconds the door swung open I caught a glimpse of Necross' plate...well....more accurately "plates". I saw at least three plates that were still being filled with the rest of his order.
"Better eat it while it's still hot," Necross informed me, gesturing to my plate.
"Oh...right," I agreed, taking a bite of the pancakes and enjoying their sweet syrupy goodness.. Lance and I ate our food for a short few minutes before the waitress came and set Necross' food down.
"Here you are sir. Sorry for the wait. If there's anything you gentlemen need just let me know and I will do my best to assist you," she gave us another smile before leaving us again. I was only half done with my plate, eating at a steady pace, but Necross was devouring his food in no time. He was eating with good table manners, that much I appreciated about him, but he took such large bites that he was done with his first plate in less than five minutes!
I finished my food by the time Necross was nearly done with his third plate. The waitress had set the bill on our table while Lance and I were waiting for Necross to clean his plate and pay the bill. With the last bite of a pancake he slapped his card down onto the tray and had the waitress take it away to confirm the transaction.
"So...where to now?" he asked, taking a last sip of his juice.
"I thought you guys had everything planned out?" I questioned, puzzled.
"Well...we originally did have some plans, but now that we know this is your home, I think it would be better if we let you choose where you would like to go," Lance explained. I was slightly surprised to hear what they were offering me. They would let me choose where to go?! Really? I looked up at Necross for confirmation, receiving a smile and nod. Having this opportunity, I thought of all the places I had been to as a kid growing up here. This was the perfect chance to take advantage of!
"Here's your card back sir and have a wonderful rest of the the day gentlemen!" The waitress bid us goodbye before handing Necross' card back to him. We exited the restaurant and stood outside on the sidewalk while I was contemplating about where we would go first. We weren't far from any places I would like to visit first. Since we were in Denver anyways there was one place we could stop at for memories sake.
"All right, I know where we're going to go first!" I announced.
"Great! Where to?" Lance asked.
I hoisted myself up into his arms, holding on tight by wrapping my arms around his neck and giving him a small smile, "You'll see. Just fly in the direction I tell you and we should be there in a few minutes." Spreading their wings, The two dragons lifted themselves into the air past the towering skyscrapers, giving us a good view of the city from above. I pointed north of the city where several suburb cities rested. The image of a small, quiet house nestled on the corner of a neighborhood street flashed through my mind, giving me a warm vibe as we flew towards our first destination...
-L-
"Right down there!" Silnis pointed down at a small house in the middle of a suburban neighborhood. There was a great sparkle in his eyes when I looked at him. He was excited and happy to be here. Seeing him smile never ceased to make my heart beat faster every time. This is what it felt like to be in love? Well...I was getting to like it more and more. It didn't even bother me to know that I would be sharing Silnis' love with Necross. Silnis may be strong, but he would have two big dragons to protect him if he ever needed defending.
Coming to a descent, I dropped Silnis down in front of the house he was gazing at with deep thought. Two cars were parked outside on the driveway and the laughter of children could be heard from behind the wood fence that hid the backyard. Silnis stepped forward towards the house, reaching a hand out and touching the wood sidings. His eyes scanned every detail of the building, no doubt recalling every moment he had spent here as a kid. It was obvious that this was his home before he moved away. The memories were still inside him, only kept at the back of his mind.
Necross and I stood behind him, staying silent as to not break the moment Silnis was having. Surprisingly, Silnis was the one to speak first, "You've probably already guessed, but this used to be my home when I lived here." He stroked the wood sidings with gentle fingers, walking over to the small lawn and kneeling down to touch the lush grass. "I remember my brothers and I playing on this lawn. We would roll around in it and use our imaginations to take us away to different worlds. In the winter we would make a snowman with our parents and decorate him with a scarf and carrot nose. He would stand right on this lawn, warm and happy. I miss those old times...." Standing back up, he turned his eyes down the rows of houses on the street to the white peaks of the Rocky Mountains far in the horizon. There was a sense of longing for the past in his eyes. But as soon as it had appeared it vanished, Silnis probably knowing it was only wishful thinking. With a sigh he turned to look at the house one last time, bidding it goodbye until next time, before climbing back into arms and smiling.
"I've had enough of the past for today. Change of plans. You two decide where we're going for the rest of the day," he said, "Don't disappoint me you two." With a kiss to my cheek, he rested his head against my chest and gestured for me to start flying. I had a small moment of shock before the thought registered to my brain. Spreading my wings again, I took us off into the skies again. I followed Necross to our next destination, all the while smiling to myself at the warmth Silnis' kiss and body was bringing to me. Only one thought replayed itself in my head as I flew--make Silnis mine....
-S-
It had been a long day. Necross and Lance had brought me to their previously planned destinations for our date and things couldn't have gone better! We had visited the Garden of the Gods near Colorado Springs, admiring the natural rock formations that created beautiful works of art. After that, we flew to the Royal Gorge Bridge, walking the bridge that stood strong above a raging river with gales that threatened to blow me off my feet. Necross took a daring move and jumped off the bridge while I was looking over the edge, bringing me with him and holding me tight against his body as he spread his wings and took a flight around and under the bridge.
"Necross!" I screamed all the while he was laughing his head off. My heart was pounding in my chest from the sudden scare, slowly recovering. "You idiot, you scared me half to death!"
"Enjoy the view Silnis before we get caught," he only replied. Looking around, I was almost too caught up in yelling at Necross to admire the sights around me. The walls of the gorge and the bridge above us amazed me with how well they complemented each other. It was as if the bridge was meant to bring the gap between the two landmasses together. We flew around for a bit more, waving hello to the sky trolley that brought visitors across the gorge by wire, before Necross brought us back to the bridge where Lance had waited for us.
"Silnis, are you okay? You're not hurt are you?!" he asked, concerned, while checking me over for any injuries. I pulled his hands off of me, holding them in mine as I smiled at him.
"No, I'm fine Lance. Thank you for being worried about me. Necross did give me quite the scare though at first," I reassured him, saying the last part while giving the darker dragon a dirty look. He only smiled innocently, acting as if I had enjoyed it the whole time. I walked over to him, looking him straight in the eyes before planting a small kiss on his muzzle. He stood in shock, his eyes shifting to the Trix yogurt combination again. I giggled.
"Keep on pulling stunts like that with me and that may be the only kiss you'll get from me," I teased him, walking back to Lance. He grasped my hand before I could get too far; his eyes were starting have some indigo mixed in with the yellow and pink.
"S-Silnis...I'm sorry about that. I promise you that I won't do anything too extreme like that...without asking for your permission first. I'm sorry...," he apologized, head bowed down. Turning back around, I saw how sorry he felt for scaring me like that and wanted to make up for it. Necross' playful side did sometimes drive me crazy, but that didn't mean I could hate him just for that part of him. Besides his usual antics, I knew deep down that Necross was a strong, kind-hearted person with a heart of gold. Knowing this, I knew he would be a lover worth tolerating his tricks and pranks for.
"Necross...you're one of my closest friends. We've been through so much together as champions. Do you really think I'm that cruel to leave you in the dark like that?" I questioned, lifting his head up so that we could meet eye to eye.
"Well...knowing you...," he joked, grinning widely. I only smiled softly at him, leaning in towards him.
"You're such a kid Necross," I told him, giving him another kiss, but this time a bit longer just to send the message that he was special to me as I was to him. Nothing as trivial as his bridge jump was going to break our relationship.
"I love you Silnis...," he whispered, nuzzling me affectionately. I caressed his cheeks, giggling as he nipped at the ticklish spots on my neck.
"I know Necross...," I said, enjoying the moment for a few more minutes before pulling away. "So...where to next? We still have about five hours left before it gets dark." I climbed into Lance's arms, giving him his own special kiss to make up for the small, intimate moment Necross and I had shared.
"We do have one more thing to do if you're willing to stay up late for it Silnis," Lance offered. "Oh...what would that be?" I inquired. The two dragons smiled at each other before doing the same at me. A raised eyebrow was my only response for them.
*****
We were back on the heights of the Rocky Mountains, away from any cities though. Only mountain peaks and valleys were visible from where we stood. Necross and Lance had brought me to a part of the mountain range that was inaccessible to normal citizens. Towering trees and steep slopes was no place for the average person. The sun was setting down the horizon and the night sky was a marvelous hue of violet, blue, and gold. As the last sliver of sunlight slipped below the horizon line, I reached my hand out to it and captured a glowing orb of the primal light energy.
"Wow...," Lance said in awe besides me. The orb of light floated gently above me palm, radiating warmth and light.
"Being the Champion of Light, I can capture any source of light and use it however I want to use it. The Sun's light is the purest form of light energy. It 's the most powerful kind of light to exist in this world, having been here the longest. Other stars possess the same level of light too, but the Sun is the only one within my reach," I explained to him. I closed my palm and the glowing orb disappeared, but I actually just absorbed it to use it for later purposes.
"Well Silnis...it's time," Necross softly spoke, lending me a hand. Taking it, I climbed into his arms and held on tight as he and Lance took off towards the sky. The cool night breeze bit at my exposed skin, but Necross' body provided me with an unusual amount of warmth. I snuggled in closer to his body, enjoying the body heat.
"Silnis, look!" Lance pointed upwards to where several stars sparkled dimly in the black background. I knew there were more stars up there to see, but there was one problem causing them to hide. Down below us, several city lights cast their glow up towards the sky, blocking out the dimmest of stars. "Damn light pollution."
"I can fix that," I replied to Lance's comment, bringing out the light orb from before and tossing it up above us. The orb elevated a few hundred feet, becoming a lone bright dot, before breaking apart and scattering to create temporary stars that outglowed the city lights below us. The one orb created at least a thousand stars that twinkled with glee. Necross and Lance were amazed at my work, admiring the sky's celestial canvas. I've done this trick on numerous occasions, but I never grew bored of seeing it again and again. The three of us admired the stars some more before they started to exhaust and fade away. It was getting late anyways. Summoning a portal ahead of us, Necross and Lance flew us in to arrive back at Pacema's Sanctuary.
Setting me down, I was about to return back to my room before giving the two dragons their well-deserved thank you. Grinning at them with a sly look in my eyes, I gestured to them with a finger to come closer and bend down. As soon as they were at my level, I gave them both another kiss and hug, holding their ears withing hearing range of my mouth. "Thank you.... You couldn't have made this day any better," I whispered, hesitating to speak the last words on my tongue. Mustering the courage, I breathed the last words needed to end the night on a sweet note.
"I love you...." Not wanting to stay and make things awkward for myself, I quickly walked my way back to my room, glancing back when I reached my door. Had it been right to say those words now? I didn't know. They've already been spoken and heard.... Oh well...it did feel nice to finally tell them. Entering my room, I flipped on the lights and was expecting Iris to come greet me like he always does, but he wasn't on my bed asleep like usual. Hmm.... Taking a few more steps into my room, I heard the familiar hiss and looked under my bed to find him curled up and trembling.
"Iris?! What's wrong!?" I asked, pulling him out from under my bed. Instantly his eyes locked onto mine and a vision started to form within my mind. I saw my family's home being surrounded by a small force of monsters in the night when they were all asleep. From out of the shadows, a lone figure walked into the spotlight of a streetlight and revealed himself. I gasped in horror, knowing who the he was and how evil he could be.
"Come and protect them Silnis. Be the big brother you are and defend their insignificant lives. Otherwise...I'll enjoy hearing them cry out in pain and beg for mercy. One by one...I'll kill them slowly and painfully...," he spoke in the vision, taunting me. N-No...this can't be real! It's just another one of his illusions. It couldn't be my home! The vision shifted to the house and I shook in fear as I realized that this was no trick. Even in the dark, I could see every detail the house had from the lawn to the small dents and scratches on the sidings. His illusions always had one flaw in them, but the house was as perfect as the day I had last seen it. He...wouldn't....
"Oh...I would...," he chuckled heartily before the vision broke. Cold sweat stuck to my body as I breathed out in heavy breaths, taking in what I just saw. T-That bastard! He would dare violate the most sacred rule of the Elements! Even Chaos, as evil as he may be, wouldn't dare do such a thing! No...this was his own doing.... Iris was still looking at me, his gaze speaking to me his thoughts. Having no choice, I slowly stood, my armor coming into form as I summoned a portal. Iris wrapped himself around me, intent on coming with me.
"Are you sure?" I asked him. He didn't answer a definite yes. "All right then. Here we go." Stepping through the portal, I prepared myself for a bloody battle and a long night.
