When it all goes wrong... Pt2
#69 of Exploration
Winslo cast a special spell.
"Oh, by casting Read languages, more words have appeared. These are of the same script, and they are the same writing style as the stuff before." the bunny looked slightly surprised.
"What does this new stuff say?" Thomas asked, standing by a bookshelf.
"Should we prepare to teleport all this stuff?" Time suggested."The glowers can probably find space for it, and it might give us help with Kodey, an expert healer writes everything down."
"Yeah, good idea." Devlin agreed, and started placing little buttons against the shelves. These were teleporters for material objects, they would shift anything not living when programmed to, when the programmer said. The cool trick it had was that it was also teleport anything on the shelves, so an entire bookshelf could be shifted by one teleporter. The only drawback is they had to be operated from nearby. As people went about this new chore, Winslo continued reading, Salbar by his side.
"Ah, you are intelligent. You have used your magical power to read this, for indeed it is the only way to be done. Now read, if you have time.
"Many years ago, I began experimenting with many necro arts, and breeding various creatures. My minions, before they were vaporised, were the special blends of salamander and zombie. But like the miser, I grew more to the idea of stronger and stronger things. This fortress is riddled with plant, animal and even mineral creatures that used to obey me explicitly. Alas, this is before I became to obsessed by my own work."
"As my power grew, I began to summon much more powerful undead creatures, wraiths and spirits. A vampire used to live in the tower, before what now resides here destroyed it without blinking. Then I summoned the ultimate undead creature, a lich, which made me rejoice. The ultimate blend of magical power and total evil, and it obeyed my orders. These liches are perfectly harmless without being ordered, but woe betide anything that crosses one of them. Even what does reside here will not enter, due to the lich forced into the stone above my tomb."
"Ah, so that's real, I thought it was." Devlin said, looking at the creature on the wall. "this is not my first experience with necromancy." Winslo nodded, we just knew Devlin had had some varied planet falls. The bunny continued reading.
"Then one day, one of my highly powerful spells I was working on backfired, and there was a rip between this world, and the Abyss. From there came many evil creatures, all severe in power, and mostly in spirit form.I was initially thrilled to have these evil beasts in my presence, it was like having the devil around for tea."
"There's always a price with the devil." I interjected.
"They were very welcoming to me, glad to me that I had freed them to the mortal world. They found out where I was, and what was on this planet. When they heard, they decided they could leave this building, and tried. But they could not, and the reason they couldn't was because the spell I had cast bound them to the building. Only if my body was destroyed could they leave, and when they worked this out, they grew annoyed and impatient."
"All my dreams fell around me, and I knew they would kill me without a second's thought. But I bargained with them. If I kept supplying them with sacrifices, they would let me live. So I began my terrible dealings. I lied to all those I came across, said the most blatant things, and the villagers in the town near here took me in, until I diseased them all. I brought them all here, and told the spirits that they could feast on them as they may, but that there was no more anywhere near. They did not care of my plight, but told me that I had to find more."
"Fortunately for me, they came across a problem, which I discovered. I could leave, but they couldn't. Essentially, I could leave and never come back, and they couldn't do anything about it.I thought I had it all planned out.
"I didn't. Travellers arrived at the village, many different species, and found me in solitary. They were all innocent creatures, and I convinced them I wished to leave this place. They took me willingly to a place called Central."
"When I arrived there, I was so amazed, to see all these vibrant creatures, living and energetic. Dragons, wolves, any kind of race you mention. They were all voluble and friendly, even to complete strangers, although at first they were scared of my appearance, which all have been. As I sat listening to them, I realised I could keep the spirits appeased for a bit longer, by sending these new creatures to this fortress."
"He's a complete bastard, isn't he?" Ryan said from his corner. There was another creak.
"But my plans were foiled, for my virus failed to effect all of them, and the glowing creature vaporised my minions. Everything had almost worked, only two reasons why. The first was a man, and the second a spider. The second, Arachno, found a cure in enough time to heal his friends, and the first was unaffected. There was a dragon who didn't either, but he did not play much of a role. The human was called Alduin Raptormaster, and he defeated me by my own rules. Injured and humiliated, I cast return to sender, and arrived back here, back into the fire."
"The spirits were running low on flesh, and they demanded of me what I had been doing. I explained I had intended to send these new creatures here, but they no longer cared, because I had not arrived with one. So instead I became a prisoner in my own fortress. They would not let me live, though I pleaded with them. As long as the supply was there, I would live, but I could not leave to replenish the supply."
"As soon as I arrived, and was out of shot from the spirits, I cast a spell to slow down time in here, a week outside is several months in here, I was stalling for time. Then I began moving everything I owned down here. Then the supply ran out, and everything came tumbling down around me.
"I knew by the snarls of anger, and I ran down here. I barred the door, casting many spells on it, and them summoned a lich, imprisoning it in the wall, so that it could be used as defence against the spirits. But I knew that I was to blame, and my guilt told me I should do one last thing. The coffin cannot be opened without force, something these spirits do not have. Then I casted Gentle Repose on myself, so my body shall not wither, trapping the spirits in the building for eternity."
There was dead silence. Winslo looked at the shakily written last few paragraphs.
"In this book is the spell for reversing the entrapment spell. As you read, the spirits believe you are to be feasted upon, so you will need the lich to defend yourself. Do not care for me, I am no longer worth it for anyone. To leave, you will need to pass the door, and they will be waiting. Use the lich, and escape."
"There, I have done one good thing in a wicked life."
There was blank space, and the writing continued.
"Why do you not flee on this instant?Do you not fear the terrible things awaiting you, wishing to feed upon you? Summoning the lich will also open the door, so be prepared to use it. Leave me to my eternal sleep. If you are still reading, you need me for a purpose, of which I cannot consider. There is only what is in this room, if you need me personally, you will need to find life force, which I will remove from me as I finish writing this.May god help you."
The writing finished, except for the incantation. Winslo did not read it aloud. There was more noise, there were many whistling noises outside the door, the spirits were awake, and desired us.
"And so even Drason realises that if you do bad, bad happens to you.Just our bloody luck to be caught in a crossfire." I said.
"We have to revive him, he's the only way we could possibly save Kodey." Blake said, thinking.
"But how, how do we exchanged life force?"
"There is a spell I know, but that would involve killing one person to activate him." Winslo said quietly.
"So one of us dies for Kodey and Drason to live? And Kodey's still a possibility."
"I don't like those odds." Billy said, looking around. We all didn't know what to say.
"Well, there is one other thing in this room." I suggested.
Everyone looked at me.
"The lich itself. If Winslo summoned it, and then transferred it's life force to Drason, that would work."
"True." Draco said, running this through."That's our only option, to be honest. Which means destroying our only way of defending against these spirits."
"Not necessarily. We have three magicians, and advanced technology." there was scuttling from the other side of the door."And Drason may have been dead, but I bet he had a couple of plans in back up. He's had a couple of years to think them up."
"Right, so what's the battle plan?"
"Straight line between us and Drason, and blast with what ever we've got at whatever comes through that door.I'll take centre, I'd like to see something survive this Eryx."
"I'll be beside you, you'll need magic." Orion said, snapping a fireball into existence.
"Likewise, keep the magicians in the centre." Felicia said.
We stood in line, standing parallel to the coffin, about three metres from it. Winslo took up his staff, and his gold runes emerged from his cloak.
"Right, one bloody massive battle coming right up." Winslo said, checking his sleeves were clear. This is like a normal person loading a pump action shotgun. There were several clicks as weapons were loaded, and Orion and Felicia began to chant in preparation. Winslo intoned the spell.
"Sredro ym yebo lliw uoy, tnem nosir pmi, ruoy morf e erf u oy tes eva hi!"
There was a cracking of stone, and the wall collapsed. The huge lich moved for the first time, it stood about ten feet tall, and was made mostly of smoke and ash, but it's eyes were blood red as it looked at the bunny.
"You will resurrect your master, Drason!" Winslo shouted, putting every inch of power into his command, just as the door exploded. I fired my Eryx, and the missile zipped through the door, and impacted almost instantly.
"Hah!Didn't expect that, did they!" I crowed, punching the air as I reloaded. My hideous cackle being expended, the lich vanished. Then they started coming through the door. Black, shapeless creatures, much like our baleful polymorpher, but they seemed so much more substantial, almost walking black shadows. Then creatures came through the doors. These were the creatures Drason had created, and had been turned upon at the wish of the spirits.
There were many creatures, Drason had been busy. There were scorpions, evil imp like creatures, things that looked like the harpy elves, zombies, skeletons, and even two huge black horses with hooves and a mane of fire. I had played enough D+D to put a human name to them, Nightmares. There were worse nightmares next to them, but the name served them well. Little demon creatures made of fire skittered behind the spirits. There were several of the spirits.
Orion shouted the conclusion of the spell, and a mighty fireball erupted forward like a comet, impacting against one of the shadow creatures. Felicia shrieked, her voice changing pitch, and the ground heaved as one of the spirits was suddenly imprisoned in a web of leafy plants, which were glowing. Winslo turned as the lich vanished, and a lightning bolt zinged over my shoulder, and struck the one the fireball had hit. It gave an unholy screech, and seemed to fade into nothingness.
"One down, another dozen to go!" Draco shouted, as the blasters started singing. Thomas and Landon were standing beside each other, their four pistols aimed at one of the shadows. They took physical hits, but only fire and magic did serious damage to them, or patient work with gunfire.
Drason woke.It must have been a pleasant surprise. He rose from his coffin, just as Billy steadied him, for he was weak on his legs. Drason allowed his weight to gently fall on the bounty hunter. Then he looked up and saw what was happening.
"You guys always seem to try and fuck up my life, don't you?"
"Nice to see you too, Drason." I replied, firing my second shell, and then shrieking in exultation as the one I aimed for was consumed by fire. Winslo ice blasted a couple of fire imps, just as the Nightmare horses charged, blowing flame. Most of us sidestepped as they charged, but I leapt at one. With a full body blow to the shoulder, I knocked both of us to the ground. The sounds of battle and spells sung. The advantage to us was we had long range weapons, the normal creatures were being pulverized by the blasters and gunpowder relics. Ryan fired his grenade attachment, wiping out two scorpions.
As the Nightmare got to it's feet, I jumped on it's back. Fire leapt around me, but I was unharmed, my steel easily more than enough. It was aware of it's passenger, and leapt around trying to dislodge me.
"Not. A. Chance."I said, keeping balance as I drew my knife. Aiming at a spirit, I very accurately hurled the knife, and it completely missed the shadowy figure. Instead it bounced off a cauldron, and struck a harpy in the back.It fell.
"Not what I was aiming for, but I'll go with what works!" I shouted, as the Nightmare decided that it should ride back to it's own ranks to get help removing me. I had no problem with this, as I drew my sword. Bolts sung about me, greenery erupted, enmeshing and imprisoning animals, fire and ice bolts bounced around me. At one point both fire and ice intersected, and the two intertwined sending a burst of pure white light through one of the spirits.
It vanished, the pure white dispelling it. The imps swarmed at me, but I set to with my sword. Time charged with her mace, Draco with his sword. Salbar with his dual swords. Landon and Thomas had expended their second loads of clips, and were reloading. Devlin had charged forward to use his flame thrower, as had Brendan.
Drason, meanwhile, was chanting in an evil, sickly tone. His voice carved through the battle, silencing the fighters, even dulling the crashes of steel. A huge powerful form arrived, another lich. It immediately attacked the nearest shadowy figure, and they fought one another with ferocious undead power.
As I was forced through the ranks of undead by my uncooperative mount, I fought furiously against everything in my road. My sword flashed, my blaster sung. I was by no means racking up kills, that was going to the magicians, but I was causing havoc in their own ranks as the Nightmare stampeded through them. A tall devil mounted the other one, and rode towards us on a head on. I noticed with sourness he had no problem controlling where he wanted to go.
A lance appeared in his hand, and I realised that he was just going to try and run me through. The Nightmare stopped, and I raised my sword warily. Then I leaned back as the lance hit.
The wood snapped instantly, and splinters of wood went everywhere. I was rocked backwards, but kept my seat, before casually sticking out my sword into the devil's path.
There was a small innocent noise, and a flash of flame as the devil was sent back to whatever plane it had come from.
"Subtle, Alduin." Time Dancer said, beating an imp with her mace in a frenzied passion.
"I didn't know dogs go PMT." I said to myself.
"I heard that!" she shouted, swinging the mace around into a grinning male demon. He blocked it, and grabbed at her, surprisingly taking hold of her. With one arm around her waist, he thrust two burning fingers down the canine's front of her trousers, while I was beating off a scorpion. She screamed in indignity as he played with her.
"No body does that but me!" Devlin shouted. There were three quarrels of flame, two of them angled past me and Time, and the third from behind, and all three struck the demon full on. His facial expression momentarily arched in surprise, and he vanished. Time fell to the ground, looking daggers at the dust on the ground.
"Cow." she spat, before picking up her mace and wading back into the fight.
Salbar, well, he was going berserk. Most of us were fighting bitterly, but he was a whirlwind of steel. Three creatures lay at his feet, four, five, shadow tried to take him on, failed, vanished. He was leaving a trail of destruction and exceptionally cool moves in his wake.
The creatures were owned, it was that one sided. The spirits on the other hand were tougher, but likewise were blown to oblivion by Drason's second lich, Orion's fireballs, and Winslo's ice bolts. Felicia's spells did little damage to the shadows, but the vines entrapped them, leaving them helpless to attack.
Then the last shadow was cut down, and the only beast left to kill was the one I was sitting on. It had become docile as it's mind was released by the shadows, and Draco passed me Veronica's knife.
"Nice throw." he teased.
Then there was a pause while everyone reassembled their dignity and weapons, and in certain cases some health as Simba went around with some patent liquids.
"Now, Drason, we just wanted to see how you were, wanted to drop by."
"When someone's being nice to me, they want something."
"With good reason."
"The answer's no." Drason said firmly," I don't care what you need me for, I am not going to help."
"Well we saved you from everlasting sleep." Draco reminded.
"And you expected me to be gracious?" Drason looked surprised."My potions are what kept them away."
"Just as well." I said, filing my nails with my dagger,"If it wasn't for your potion making, I would have free rein to run you through with my sword. Isn't it your lucky day?"
"Stop threatening me, Alduin, I help no one, no one ever helped me."
"You're right, and you see how much shit you dug yourself into?" Time Dancer replied.
"And what do you mean no one ever helped you, we brought you to Central." Blake added."A lot of thanks we got."
"Yes, we heard about that, your continuity plan for us.As I see it, you're in a lot of trouble." Landon said, placing fresh magazines into his pistols. There were a whole load of empty cartridges where he and Thomas had been standing.
"I spent my life in a lot of trouble." Drason sneered.
"Well here's a chance to start anew." Devlin said, smiling." You might as well listen. We have a reindeer friend who's been poisoned, and I believe that you might be able to help."
"No."
There was a whirring of steel, and a dagger embedded itself in one of the spider hybrid's legs. He sank like a stone, grunting in pain.
"Fair shot, Alduin." Javid said appraisingly, as Drason lay on the ground in pain.
"No it wasn't." I said candidly."Drason,it's very simple. You heal Kodey, I won't chop your legs off one by one. You said you could heal any poison, Silverine challenges you."
"Arachno could, he has all the tools."
"All his tools are saying it's impossible. Nothing like a bit of odds thrown your way."
Our teleporters winked into life again.
"Oh good."I said, looking at my gem. Drason moaned.
"This fortress is collapsing, the spell holding it together has faded as a result of the combat."
There was a warning creak.Devlin drew out his remote, punching in a five digit code.
"Well, Drason, all your gear's being moved to Central, if you want to keep it, I suggest you follow."
Devlin pressed a button, and everything vanished. Drason looked aghast at the bareness of the room.He withdrew the knife in his leg, and got to his feet.
"I hate being co-erced."
"I wouldn't call it coercion, I'd called it friendly persuasion."
"Friendly?" Drason looked offended. I drew my sword.
"I'm fine with unfriendly persuasion, it's up to you."
"Bastard." the dragon spider replied, limping over to the lectern and grabbing his tome.
Draco bent down and passed me my knife again.
"And don't let go of it this time." he chuckled. I shrugged. Devlin took Drason's arm as he came back, and teleported.
"Thank the gods for that." Javid sighed, shaking his head, as the building began to crash down. I teleported, as did everyone else.
I arrived on Central, still on top of the Nightmare.
Silverine came charging around the corner, two glowers in behind him.
"Ah, Silverine, a glass of water, if you don't mind." Drason smiled.
"He didn't look that happy fifteen seconds ago." Billy whispered to me.
"He knows he's valuable."
Silverine ground a few layers off his teeth, and turned to Dev.
"Kodey's there, but we can't inject any more soralium, Arachno says it's too much of a risk."
Arachno himself came around the corridor.
"For Christs sake, I need someone intelligent here. Drason, all your stuff is three rooms down from my own, we seriously need to get a move on. The high tech is saying it can't be done, but there's always an antidote."
"A lesson I was always taught." Drason said.We quietly went down the corridor, me still on the Nightmare, and came to a halt by Arachno's room.
We all entered except Billy and Time. Time took care of the horse, and Billy because he volunteered to tell the glowers what had happened.
Inside, Drason found a high powered microscope, an antique compared to the tools around him. Arachno gave him a special sample of the virus on a small glass piece, and Drason began looking through the microscope, changing the magnification ever so gently.
"Interesting, I should record this for future reference." he said, fine tuning his view.
"We already are."
"Good.What creature used it?"
"A giant serpent."
"It must have astonishing resistance against poison." Drason said, still gently watching the virus move and writhe."Yes, I think we shall need quite a few ingredients, of which only one I have. I guess that there will be four things we need."
"I like low tech sometimes." Arachno smiled."It has it's advantages with a master poisoner."
"On the other hand, good tech hardly ever lies, and I bet you're pretty good with poisons too."
"Stop making passes, Drason." Silverine replied.
"What do you need?" I asked, getting down to the basics.
"Well, I need my bottle of liquid insanity, it does wonders to all sorts of poison wounds, it will need to be used to concentrate the dose."
"I should be writing this all down." I chuckled." Arachno, you'd better run a scan on his stuff, so we can make more."
"Do we need to, with you here?" Drason suggested innocently.
"It's that sort of remark that makes me annoyed, and makes everyone else laugh, Drason." I replied.Cue laughter.
"Next, I need something organic, but with natural healing powers.I will also need some kind of blood. It will have to be mammalian, as Kodey is a mammal."
"Draco, go get the bottle."I replied, stepping forward."I can volunteer that."
"Natural healing powers, and organic? What did you have in mind?" Winslo asked.
"Well some kind of organic liquid, with has healing capabilities. There's only one thing that comes to mind, and it involves Devlin."
"Why the Hellfire?" the dragon in question asked.
"Has anyone noticed how easily the burns heal after said enjoyment?" Drason suggested.
"You have got to be kidding." Javid was wheezing with laughter."Devlin's semen has natural healing power, like those tentacles?"
"Not much, but it would suffice. What are these tentacles you speak of?"
"Long story, Drason."I replied, dodging a story."This is getting patently ridiculous, but will someone go and have it off with Devlin in the next room? And while you're at it, can everyone bugger off and leave the doctors to their work?"
"Sounds like a plan." Arachno replied."Everyone out, save for Alduin, Dev and Silverine."
They did, Arachno was in charge of the operation room, his word was law. Draco went to get the bottle of liquid insanity. I drew my knife, and cleaned it. Silverine came over to me as I sat on a chair, my knife in my hand.Arachno was already stroking Devlin off with his brilliantly dexterous fingerwork. Drason was busy thinking in his head, looking frequently at Kodey.
I changed from my bionic form, and gave Silverine the knife.
"You do it, I don't have the courage."
"You had the courage to volunteer, that's enough." the Lupogriff replied, gently pressing the blade hard against my arm. It hurt really badly, and I howled as the Lupogriff broke the skin. Silverine grabbed a test tube of some kind, and allowed a generous amount to run in.
"That's enough, thank you." Drason nodded in my direction. Silverine gave the liquid to Drason, who placed it in a new school beaker device. Then the Lupogriff gently placed a hand over my mouth, for I was about to swear.
After five seconds of muffled noise from self, the Lupogriff smiled and removed his paw.
"Feel better?"
"Much.Damn that hurt."
Silverine looked at my bleeding arm. I saw the brief look.
"Oh, all right, but gently."
I felt his tongue caress my wound. It caused no added pain. Meanwhile, Devlin cried in delight as Arachno brought him to ejaculation, and I watched in amusement as Devlin released his load into another containing device. Draco came back three seconds later with the bottle. It was a light grey colour.
Drason mixed about half the bottle with the blood in the beaker, and the mixture turned a cloudy white. Then he added one of Arachno's own cures for poison. He also added a special chemical to the mixture.
"This is a special blend of chemical which viruses love, they duplicate like hell in it. So they converge on that point, and that's when they hit the rest of the antidote."
He added Devlin's seed, and the entire thing became clear, just like that. Arachno took a drop for later examination, while Drason spoke to us three.
"You will hold him down, I know this will hurt him. Devlin, take the wounded arm. Silverine, the other arm and chest. Alduin, hold his legs in place."
We did so, and Drason drew a spoonful of the liquid out, and gently poured it over the wound.
As he did so, Kodey reacted like a surprised rhino. He leapt upwards, but we were prepared, and the combined strength of the three of us kept him down. Draco came over to place his own weight on Kodey's chest and head. Kodey struggled violently, but this was nothing compared to some struggles we had had in the past, say, over sex.I watched as streams of black, just underneath the skin, converged on the wound.
"That's our virus, now Arachno, could I have a towel over here, it will leave the wound like pus, the wound will need to be kept clean. It will take no more than thirty seconds."
The spider did so, just as a sickly yellow liquid oozed from the wound. The towel covered everything, but Drason was counting out loud. He gave it a full minute, and Arachno removed the towel. Kodey stopped struggling five seconds later.
The wound was clean, the reindeer seemed perfectly alright, although he was breathing shallowly. Drason looked heavenward, and I sighed.
"Thank the Lord for that. Can we let go now?"
"Just give him another minute, he should come round soon." Drason replied.I noticed he was becoming quite decent to everyone.
