A Pokemon trainer, a few years ago people would say that and first thing that would come to mind would be starting at the age of ten and choosing a starter pokemon, for a lot of trainers that was the case but not for one young man.
James, at the age of fifteen wanted to see the world, train his way to the top of the ladder but there one thing that shattered his dreams, the cost of it all. He could never understand how much becoming a pokemon trainer would cost at the age of fifteen his parents always told him 'you will understand when you are older'.
He watched as his friends set out and travelled the world while he sat at home watching them leave the town, hoping for a miracle.
He always tried to convince his parents by saying 'I can make money from battles' but the cost of starting on this path was just too much, to pay for the starting essentials would just be too much for his mother and father. Times has changed, a child at the age of ten never had the choice anymore if the family had the money then the child could become a trainer.
His family was not the wealthiest person, his father Robert, work for the research and development team in Rustboro city, if his project failed the money that was provided to his project him would be cut making it harder for him to live, unless he made a breakthrough, for James that kind of luck was never quite there.
Robert may have worked in the research and development team and considered a nerd or a geek but he didn't quite fit the bill, he was reaching almost seven foot in height always wore jeans and a shirt to work not a suit and tie code that other employee wore but it got the job done.
His desk was filled with pictures of his wife Lilly and his son James some were pictures of him and his wife at a young age with a Torchic and his wife holding a Mudkip and having a very noticeable bump showing that she was carrying James. Others were of James growing up most of these pictures were already at home scattered around the house but with his desk like this, it made him feel like he was never away from the two things he loves the most.
Lilly was a kind hearted loving mother you would expect, any time James talked about becoming a trainer she would never tell him that it that is was impossible for him to become one, she always said 'one day son you will travel the world I promise you' which always caused James to have the boost of confidence he needed, to push him through the problem he faced. She was the shortest in the family her height may have not been her strongest suit but her keen eye to spot when something was wrong made it almost impossible to hide anything from her.
James was lucky being an old child his parents always had time for him, the house they lived in may have been small but for three people in a small village outside a major city like Rustboro it was home.
The house the family lived in was a lonely house in a small village outside the major city Robert worked in, upon entering the house you were always greeted by the pictures of the family, a timeline of pictures spanning from room to room until you came to the dining room, a huge picture of the three of them all in each other's arms smiling directly back at you hanging from the wall causing you to feel a warm tingling feeling.
From where the house was built it was quite peaceful, hearing the Taillow and Surskit from the lake nearby each morning compared to the usual noise from the city, but on the day of James's eighteenth it was a different atmosphere. The family had just woken from another peaceful night away from the loud busy city of Rustboro, James was the first to wake he felt like this was the day, the day he would step out into the world and travel.
Running straight into the bathroom he always did his morning routine wash his face, clean his teeth and look at himself in the mirror, some days he wouldn't do it but he would say 'you are a pokemon trainer' to keep his hopes up. This day he felt like he was destined to become one something in this mind told him. Recalling the dream of becoming a pokemon trainer he daydreamed off thinking of all the pokemon he could meet new people he could battle the badges he could collect, coming back to reality he finished cleaning his face.
With all the time wasted dreaming in the bathroom his mother and father had already set the plates on the table ready for breakfast, He could smell cooked bacon in air taking a deep breath he ran even faster into the dining room and sitting at the table waiting patiently.
"Morning James" a voice spoke from the kitchen
"Sleep well" the voice questioned
"Sure did you're not forgetting something mom are you" James questioned his mother who was still running around the kitchen expecting to be greeted with balloons and banners like the previous year but nothing the rooms were standard it was like a normal day.
"Forgot what son" She poked her head out from the archway between the kitchen and the dinning room and questionable look on her face.
Did they really forget today I mean I know I'm eighteen but come on, James said to himself with a slightly sad look on his face.
His mother let out a laugh "you really think we would forget?"
"Happy birthday son" His mother and father both burst into view from the kitchen handing the boy a square shaped box.
"A box" James said sitting down on one of the table chairs pulling the ribbon from it.
"You know son sometimes there are things... inside the box" Robert making a sarcastic comment letting out a little chuckle while Lilly elbowed him telling him to easy off.
"Maybe it's a pokeball maybe I can start after all!" he began to hype himself up but on opening the box he saw a necklace it was a pokeball necklace opening the silver pokeball on the top side was a picture of his father and mother but on the other was a space for another picture.
"Well you are kind of right" His father and mother now arm in arm
"It's amazing thanks" He stood up and ran to his parents both giving them a long hug his mother was a little shorter than the two and had to pull away before losing the will to breathe
"Please stop growing James I might need to buy some stilts to keep eye level with you" she began to laugh as she started to walk back towards the kitchen.
"What about this bottom part" James pointed towards to empty space.
"Oh we thought maybe you could fill it in with something you like" His father replied giving him a pat on the shoulder.
James then sat down at the table and dug up the one thing he always did ever year him becoming a pokemon trainer.

"For the last time James we simply cannot afford it how many times must I go over this" A heavy tone blasted through the small house.
"Robert please, go easy on him he has been waiting for this moment for his entire life you will be a pokemon trainer in the end James dont worry about it for now" A feminine voice barely from the kitchen as Lilly served breakfast.
"No Lilly, he will never understand how much it takes to even put food on this table" James lowered his head as his father spoke
"Dad I'm sorry I was just asking" James's voice cracking as his spoke.
"James you ask us this almost every year and each time we say we can't, please son" He got up from the table and opened his arms to his son
"It's not that we don't want you to be a trainer it's the cost of it all it's not what it was like when me and your mother started it things has changed"
James stood up and hugged his father putting his face into his shoulder, James wasn't as tall as Robert but the outrage of his father made him feel the size of a pea.
"Im sorry dad... it...its's just everyone I know has already moved on and gone out into the world to travel meet new friends meet new pokemon discover new pokemon and I..I can't do that" tears began to form in the young adult's eye as his words became mixed with his sobbing.
"Hey come on now, listen you will become a trainer ok just give it some time your mother and I know you have waited a long time for this but trust me you wait a little while longer you will be a trainer ok" His father now at eye level but quickly stood tall to check his watch
"Shoot I'm going to be late love you lilly I might be home a little late got a few extra tests I need to run, might even discover something new" darting over the over side of the table to kiss his wife goodbye and quickly eating the a few bits of bacon that was on his plate
"Love you to sweetheart don't strain yourself" Robert let out a laugh
"Dont worry about me I will be fine and James keep your chin up son"
With a little ruffle of his sons hair and a kiss to his wife, Robert open the front door and ran off to work on another project, hoping to get some results that could help his son get the future he deserved. He loved his family more then anything in the world and all he wanted to do was make them happy and if it required him to work over and over to help his son become a trainer then he work until he could breath no more.
"James could you help me put these dishes away" Trying to again lift the spirits of her son and take his mind off of any doubt he had in his mind.
"Sure" lifting the plates off the table keeping his head down and letting out a sigh. He tried to hide his feelings from his mother, but after the discussion only minutes ago she knew he had doubt in his mind.
"James come on I know it's hard for you, your farther has always been here to support us if he could make you a pokemon trainer he would in a heartbeat that applies for me too" He felt much happier and understood that his parents loved him they were trainers before him they would want hi to experience the same journey.
"I know mom Its just I'm sick of waiting around it angers me" grasping the plates with a firm grip almost too much.
"Careful with those" she pointed at the plates
"Don't want you breaking them tell you what here you can help me today if you want" She leaned over taking the plates from him.
"I need some bits for tonight's dinner I was thinking of something special you know to celebrate your eighteenth, head to the market and pick me up some eggs and flour" reaching for her wallet she handed James a few notes with a little extra
"Get yourself something nice too I never know what to get you anymore you don't leave hints like you did when you were little" She smiled at him and laughed
"Now go on and happy birthday son" She gave him a hug and a kiss on his cheek
As any embarrassed son would do tried to pull away from his mother
"Come on mom really I'm eighteen I'm a little too old for kisses from his mother" he said grinning
"You're never too old for kisses from your mother now go on"
"And don't forget that necklace"
Before he headed of out the door he placed the jewellery around his neck
"I wouldn't forget something this important cya later"
With the clock striking nine in the morning he left his house
"But leaving your breakfast isn't something important" Lilly said under her breath

Headed into town taking the usual route walking by along side the lake that ran by his house it led right into town it was nice for him to listen to the sound of the forest on the other side rather than the busy road. The smell of wild berries and the odd sweet taste in the air, this was the life he always dreamed of to live always travelling discovering new smells hearing the calls of pokemon in the distance. It could of dangerous for him if he ever got attacked by one but it would be the closest he ever get to one that would be a risk he would take.
He would always see something different on the way into tower this time it was a Silcoon hanging from a large tree a few feet from the river, the tree towering over any other trees in the area soaring high into the sky blocking out the sun in most parts of the forest. Walking closer to the tree he started to spot more Silcoon's each one hanging from the branches slowly moving, swinging as the slightest breeze past over them
As James got closer he noticed that there where darker ones too without a pokedex he couldn't identify what these ones were.
They just seem like footballs I don't think I should get to close but they don't seem like a threat what's the worse a round pokemon can do.
Walking forward almost in touching distance of the tree he stood on a broken branch causing what seemed like the most loudest cracking noise in the whole forest, now you done it James well done
Each one of these football shapes objects started to turn to him looking down and extending spikes from all its body maybe it's time to leave move backing slowly the silcoon's spikes slide back into its body and closed its eye.
I shouldn't be this forward with pokemon they can be a real threat to humans well thats what the reports say if you don't have a pokeball to catch them they could by all means attack you and maybe even... James shook its head
"I don't think that would happen" he said out loud walking along side the river again
"Are well whatever as long as I stay out of the way of any pokemon I should be..."
He froze, stopped dead in his tracks like a ice beam suddenly hit the young adult his body not moving a inch he slowly moved off to the side of the still lake trying to move as quietly as a human possible could.
Hiding behind a bush just off to the side of the river he look down stream to see a white dog shaped pokemon come out from the tree line it had a white mane that looked scruffy which covered the beasts neck and chest, with a curved horn coming out from the side of the creatures head almost like a sickle coloured a dark tone of blue which matched the pokemon's face and tail. it also had little spikes coming out of its front and back legs legs. James was a little scared he had never seen this pokemon before what if saw him and attacked him without a phone or any means of calling for help he could be seriously hurt.
Now's the time I wish I had a darn pokedex
He saw the pokemon walk out from the trees and sit on the edge of the river side its tail slowly swaying in the wind, but something was wrong the creature was whimpering crying almost.
Wait is that pokemon crying? That can't be right as his mind pondered the fact that pokemon cannot cry a tear fell from the pokemon's eye into the ever so still river making the water tremor.
"Come on James there must be something you can do this thing is crying it must be stressed or something I guess I could try to see if I can be of any help" slowing coming out of his cover and moving towards the white hound that was creating a whole new river with its own tears he was now on his hands and knees trying to be startle the pokemon.
"Darn I can't, mother and father always said how dangerous a wild pokemon can be without another pokemon to back me up, no screw it I need to see if I can help in any way possible I can just leave this pokemon to cry its self to sleep... I have done that too many times" as James said in a whisper speaking to himself he moved closer to the pokemon.
With a jolt of the pokemon's body reacting to James advance a white flash the pokemon made a move back into the treeline.
"Wait! Don't leave im sorry" James shouted stood up opening his hands.
"Look I have nothing I'm not going to hurt you I'm not a trainer I just want to see if you are ok" slowly moving closer to the river side James then sat down facing the now shocked pokemon but to James's luck the pokemon seemed to understand his action and knew that this human meaned no harm and slowly moved towards him and sit a few feet away from him just out of reaching distance but James didn't want to even try to touch this white dog just incase he would lose a finger or a hand.
"Absol" The pokemon spoke tilting its head to the side
"Your name is absol?" still trying to understand what this pokemon was saying
"sol"
"augh I was never good at understanding pokemon... erm wait so are you're an absol I'm sorry I have never really been this close to a pokemon"
"Sol" Nodding its head
"Well at least now I know what pokemon you are"
The absol then turn back to the water looking deep into the reflection that was staring back and starting to whimper this time worse than before.
"no no no don't cry" James moved over and put his hand on the side of the Absol and began stroking its soft fur a very risky move to a pokemon he only just met but it could be the only way to calm this upset pokemon down.
"Sol..." The absol then calmed down and puts its head against James shoulder by then moved down to lay its head onto of his lap
It was coming up midday for James, he spent almost his entire morning just petting this Absol he had calmed it down and seemed to have made friends with this pokemon that was still on his lap sleeping like a puppy making little purring sounds while he stroked this fur and growling when James stopped the fur felt like so soft running his hands along the pokemon's back the purring vibrated over the pokemon's entire body.
They were still sitting be the river as the sun glared down directly above the sun was shining off the still river and reflecting of James's silver chain which caused the Absol to rasie a paw shielding its eyes.
"Absol what's wrong" The Absol then pawed at the necklace
"Oh this thing my parents gave me it for my birthday take a look" he opened up the pokeball necklace and showed his new friend the picture of his parents.
"Pretty neat right" At this moment the Absol became upset and started to whimper again.
I really wish I could understand why this Absol is so upset maybe it's something like its family or a pack but I have no idea but its strange how it it reacted like this when I showed the picture little strange
"This has been fun absol but I really need to go" With a sad look on the Absol's face it got off his lap and stood its ear drooped down and its head lowered to the ground
"I will be back I promise I am just running into town I swear I will be back I promise will you wait?"
The Absol nodded and James ran off into town I really hope this Absol waits for me I may have found a pokemon that actual likes me unlike any of the ones at the pokemon center.
Im just going to quickly grab the stuff and ran straight back here I dont want this Absol to feel alone maybe I can get it something but the guys at the pokemon center can help me find something
To be continued.....
