Singularity - Part IV
#4 of Singularity
Carbon takes the baton and runs with it, with loads of encouragement from his friends of course.
The war ~begins~! Well, more like we get to see our first bits of war since technically the Vietnam War has been cooking a few years before Carbon and the gang joined it. Still, things are starting to pick up quickly. It's great to see Carbon realizing himself and becoming a true adult.

"We're ready to go, sir." A mister Lance, apparently one of Carbon's corporals by his identifying marks, walked up to the front cabin of the CH-47 chinook helicopter. "Lines are linked and the startup checks are green. Under your order, sir."
Carbon stood up from his seat near the front but stood in place, a custom breathing system tethering him to the right forward corner of the rear section. "Uh, good. Let's go then, corporal."
Johnny and Adrian shifted in their seats across the aisle, with the fox finally breaking the silence that followed to aid his subject and friend. "Are we bringing the whole escort contingent after all, or did you change you mind on that?"
"Oh, right. We... We should have the whole wing come with us, loaded and ready. Think of it as a drill."
"Good, sir. I'll inform my sergeants."
Carbon waited for the lynx to leave through the back of the chopper before he broke character. "Thanks for the help. I didn't think I'd actually choke up on the first mission."
"Can't complain, lad." Adrian pulled up his camera and snapped a quick photo of Carbon looking back to the squadron sitting in the rear. "You're doing a bang up job for no training. Even look like a born leader. My editor is gonna love you."
"Well try not to take anything too revealing just yet. Nobody knows Carbon's female for now." The tail gate rose shut, prompting Johnny to grab a handle next to his seat. "Might want to hold onto something. I've heard these things can catch the wind while hovering."
Carbon did just that, rolling his eyes when Evelyn needlessly mimicked him. "You can walk on the ceiling for all you want and you grab a strap? Silly."
"Hey now. Sometimes I just want to fit in."
The otter shook his head and braced his own nylon strap tighter when the engines spooled up. "I'm the only one that can see you. No need to fit in."
"Evelyn being mean again?" asked Johnny.
"Nah. She's actually being really friendly for once."
Adrian found a metal handle near a window and looped his whole arm through it, his other cradling his camera. "Maybe she's trying to keep your mind off the whole girl thing?"
"The boy's got brains ‾and‾ looks." Evelyn reached out her free paw and scooped up Carbon's own. "Your heat really is distracting you too much though. Just keeping you on your toes."
"Thanks." Carbon nodded before moving his paw free, not wanting to appear too strange to the others by grasping at thin air. "Okay. We'll get this delivery over with soon and then relax at base."
"More like do paperwork all evening. There's still a bunch of things we need to finalize for the lab." Johnny swung forward a bit as the chopper drifted to the side but quickly recovered with widened eyes. "Though I might want to rest after all this too."
"I hear that, mate."
Carbon smiled as he clicked a button on the underside of his newly-converted full-coverage gas mask. "Hey, this thing working?"
One of the pilots up front looked back and gave a thumb up, his response transmitting back through Carbon's mask. "Copy, sir. We are all go on communications."
"Good. What's your name, soldier?"
"Copenhagen, sir." The dart frog stuck a suctioned finger to his helmet, pointing out a flaming hand of cards depicting five aces. "Callsign's 'Cheat' if you'd rather that, sir."
"Huh, I like it." Carbon looked back and out his window portal, his eyes and grin stretching at the sight of lush jungle. "Looks damn nice out there, Cheat. How's our flight looking?"
"Pretty safe, sir. There's a couple random Charlies out and about, but no air support on recon today."
"Clean flying then? Good to hear." Carbon looked back at the guest passengers, a whole artillery squadron. Then he checked back out his window and spotted one of the support hueys flying beside them. "You guys are looking good. How's that cannon under us holding up?"
"She feels sturdy." Cheat slid open a side window and stuck his head out, then fought to close the window again. "Yeah, she's holding up fine. Glad to see our new baby's a heavy worker, eh sir?"
"Yeah." The otter sat back in his seat and stared back at the others, Johnny looking like he was going to vomit and Adrian snapping pictures out the windows. "Update me when we get close to our destination. She's all yours, Cheat."
"Aye aye, sir."
Carbon snapped his eyes open when a loud ding rang through the hull. He looked around for the source of the noise and immediately slapped the switch on his mask when another two clangs hit the vehicle. "Cheat, what's going on?"
"Some light fire like we expected. The hull's good for a few hits like that, but we can take evasive action."
The otter checked out his window and spotted Gary hanging out the side of his escort chopper, pulling one of the other privates back into the rear bay. "I don't think that's light at all. We're just not the target." Carbon stood and worked his way to the front to tap Cheat on the shoulder. "Can the other helicopters hear me?"
The frog flipped a switch and gave a thumb up. "They can now, sir."
"Good." Carbon leaned back against the gap between cabins and stared to Evelyn across from him. "Looks like it's from the one side, guys. Right wing, break off and thin their aim. Left wing, trail behind and low so the gun doesn't get hit. Fire if you can hit 'em, and only if they keep shooting back. Got it?"
"Roger, sir."
"Aye, wing leader."
"Go to work, boys." Carbon hobbled back to his seat and held onto his brace strap, soon requiring it just to stay upright. As the whole chinook banked forty-five degrees sideways he put his paw back on his mask switch. "You sure we can do that with the cannon?"
Cheat shrugged and swung the aircraft to the opposite side. "Not sure. Just felt like she could do it."
"Well stop. We're making it harder for the others to protect it." Carbon leaned forward and looked out the front. "The landing zone is that mountain, right? Just go straight and fast. The others will deal with the shooters."
"Aye, major."
Two long minutes passed with dozens of clacks and clangs resounding through the outer hull. As they came just over the target point Evelyn stood up as if the rough flight was nothing and looked down at Carbon. "The hits are coming from all around now. I believe they're trying to take the hill before we set up the gun."
"So what, we can't just drop it off?"
"These men would likely die without help. You're not ready for combat, Carbon." Eve reached out and took Carbon's paw between her own. "Please, call the mission off. We can still go back to base."
Carbon huffed at the suggestion. "They need help, right?" He stood back up and held onto a support bar on the ceiling as his paw went back to his mask. "Change of plans, guys. Landing zone's about to be taken over." He looked into Evelyn's eyes and then issued the order. "Everyone hop off and defend the hill. Choppers keep to the skies with minimal crew for fire support."
"Sir?" Cheat looked back for a moment before his attention was forced back on his piloting. "We don't have guns, sir."
"We have soldiers. Drop the cannon then hit the deck." Carbon shifted his gear to a portable breather and started slowly making his way to the back of the chinook, grabbing a handgun from a wall mount as he went. "We'll jump out and you can circle back when we're clear."
"Uh... Yes sir. But we only have thirty minutes of fuel for that, sir."
"Do what you can, Cheat. Head back if you're low and come back later."
"Aye."
Evelyn stood in Carbon's way, pointing to the weapon in his paws. "Come on, Carbon. you're not a soldier. You even know how to use that thing?"
"No." The otter managed a smirk through his nervousness. "But you do. Help if you need to. I don't mind out here."
Evelyn nodded and then faded away, her concentration locking on Carbon's left arm. "Here, this arms it." She controlled his paw and pulled back the slide of the pistol, then snapped the safety. "Finger off the trigger, and only point it at things you want dead. You got that?"
"Yeah. How many times can it fire?"
"Eight, then it needs more bullets. But try to let someone else shoot first instead of you. Keep your head down, alright? There's two of us in here."
The whole helicopter jerked upward as the howitzer cannon was released just off the ground, a proper landing prohibited in the current conditions. "Sorry, sir. I'm putting her down in ten, just next to the gun."
"Good work, Cheat." Carbon hit a switch near the back and the tailgate of the chinook slowly opened. "Everyone get ready. Landing zone's hot so ready your rifles."
Suddenly Adrian surprised the otter with a paw on his shoulder. "Johnny's staying. I'm taking some shots of this."
"You sure about this?"
"Are you?"
Carbon grabbed another handgun and armed it like Evelyn showed him. "Here. At least have something to defend yourself." The chopper hit the ground a bit roughly and Carbon pulled the husky out with him. "Find something to hide behind."
"Since when are you such a tough guy?" The two slid behind some sandbags and readied their instruments, in Adrian's case his camera. "You had what? A day of training?"
"I know all of the handbooks by heart. I'm not as bad off as you think." Carbon waited for the last of the artillery squad to exit the back and then hit the switch on his mask. "You're clear, Cheat. Good flying."
"Thanks, sir." The chinook lifted off rather aggressively and ducked out between some trees. "We'll be on a five mile track so your radio should work."
"Copy that. Keep my bird in one piece, Cheat."
Adrian snapped a shot of the helicopter and then spun back around. "So what now?"
"Easy. They have to climb uphill and we have guns pointed down." Carbon spotted one of his hueys dropping off his support, but the lack of Gary said it was just the tailing chopper. "I'll get your CO, guys. Until then, stay ready. They're coming."
"Sir! Major, your orders?" Corporal Lance ran over, holding his rifle pointed upward.
"Where's right wing?"
"They're coming around wide. They took some heavy fire."
Carbon looked around for a while until Evelyn highlighted the CO in his vision. "I'll go inform the CO here. The rest of you need to hold the ridge..." Again, Evelyn highlighted some relevant information and flashed it into Carbon's head. "The north ridge. More are coming from there and the west. I intend to bolster this squadron until they break the attack."
The corporal nodded to the orders. "Yes sir. Sergeant Deckard is in charge while the captain is in the air. Send new orders his way, sir."
Carbon gave the lynx a tap on the shoulder and then jogged over to the area's commanding officer, a lieutenant Miller by his uniform. "Lieutenant. We're here to help you with a problem heading your way."
"Those gooks on my hill? Yeah, they're about to be some crispy Charlies. We have mines all over the west and there's an air strike loading up right now." The timber wolf stood up straighter when he noticed he was outranked, though a bit confused once he started looking closer at the feminine curves under Carbon's uniform. "Uh... Sir, my apologies. Were you sent here to take over?"
"At ease, Miller. We just dropped off your new gun and I saw you might need a paw." Carbon shifted to the north and nudged his muzzle in the direction. "You know you have a ton coming from the north, right? Anything headed that way?"
"That's the air strike, sir. If you have any good marksmen we could use some help keeping most of the enemy in the strike zone."
"Right. I'll put my men on it. Carry on, lieutenant. Sounds like you're doing a good job here."
The wolf stiffened up again and gave a parting salute. "Thank you, sir."
Carbon jogged over to the ridge and met his men, locking on to the mentioned sergeant. "Deckard? Update on your orders. We need to keep the enemy to the north. Keep them off us if they get close, but priority is grouping them. There's an air strike inbound that'll do the heavy lifting."
"Sure thing, major. Lance!" The lynx answered the call and crouched nearby. "Lance, spread the word. Squeeze them tight to the north and clear the front."
"Yes sir."
Carbon watched the corporal run down the line, stopping man by man. Then something snapped past his head and he hit the deck. "Crap! Here they come!"
"Can't do much down here, Carbon." Evelyn met him near the ground and pushed herself back to a standing position. "Remember that book we read? The best defense is a strong offense. Don't let them come to you first."
Carbon nodded and got back against the sandbag wall. He peeked over the edge and spotted a few furs trudging forward tree by tree, rifles popping off random shots as they moved. "Not very organized, huh?"
"More than they look," the sarge commented as he shot one of the men down.
"Most have little training, if reports are to be believed." Evelyn faded out and then appeared next to one of the men. "This one's been aiming at you more that the others. Better chance he'd hit you so..."
Carbon's gun rose up and snapped off a single shot that grounded in front of the fur. "Damn. Of course I had to grab ‾this‾."
"Want me to help?" the flower girl prompted.
"No, I'll get it. I just squeezed too hard." Carbon brought the pistol up again and fired off another round, this time pegging the guy in the leg. "Got him! There's just some sort of drop to the thing is all."
"Gravity pulls bullets down to the ground more the further they go." Eve did her disappearing act again and appeared behind another enemy to the northwest, her hand wobbling a bit above his head. "That pistol's got slow rounds so you need a lot more compensation. Try shooting for my hand."
Carbon did just that, the resulting impact punching through the fur's skull. "Goddess, that's..."
"Messy, but necessary. Either you or him." Evelyn reeled herself back in and pulled Carbon down so their backs were to the sandbags, just in time for a bullet to spit where the otter's chest would have been. "Sorry you have to put up with all this, but you're the one that dragged us into a war. I didn't want you to experience this... Killing people..."
A few explosions blasted to the west, signaling the traps were being triggered. "I... I can deal with it. I just wish I knew ‾why‾ we're all fighting like this."
"It's senseless. Our kind went quite a few hundred years without war when we realized this." Eve pointed to the side just as one of Carbon's men took a hit to the arm. "Sadly peace never lasts. Come on. You don't just need to fight to be useful."
Carbon tried to stand up to run and the fellow otter but Eve locked up his back muscles. Instead, he crawled over and laid the fur on his back so he had access without raising above the barriers. "Uh... Stay calm and hold still. I'll help you out, private."
"He's got bandages and painkillers in a bag on his left." Evelyn pointed out the small pouch and then discerned the contents after Carbon emptied it. "This is morphine. You need to stab it into him just above the wound, then press the tin flat."
Carbon did as he was told and then went for the bandages, only Eve stopped him. "Wait, what's up?"
She pointed to a few packets and described them in order. "Disinfect the area first with this, then put this coagulant. Bandage after that and he should be fine for now."
"Got it. This is the first..." Carbon did as he was told, completely unphased by the red blood all over his paws. Soon the soldier, whom he couldn't identify due to the blood over his patches, was fixed up and grunting on the ground. "Stay down. You'd do us better alive for later than dead now, private."
Ka-chack.
"You've really got a knack for this, lad." Adrian put down his camera and gave a smile. "How's the situation?"
Evelyn forced Carbon's right arm to reach out and drag Adrian closer to the ground, two bullets whistling next to where he was crouching. "It's under control." Carbon paused and quirked his ears back. "You hear that? What's that sound?"
The husky's larger ears panned around until they found the sound. "Helicopter blades. We expecting that?"
"No, bombers." Carbon followed Adri's eyes and made out a haze in the ultraviolet of his vision, like something was reflecting through the trees. "It's small. Did right wing land yet?"
"Don't think so."
Very quickly one of the hueys ramped around the tree line. Within seconds the machine guns on both sides started chugging away, raining both shells and raw death down on the enemy. Once they were in range the remaining crew lit up their rifles as well, drawing enough attention from the enemy to stop them dead in their tracks. Right wing had returned with guns blazing.
As much as they were helping, right wing was going to get itself killed. Carbon reached for his radio switch and barked out a warning. "Right wing! You are directly in an incoming bombing lane! Break off to the east now!"
The radio churned out a garbled response just as the helicopter banked to its left. "Copy, sir. Returning from the east."
Carbon rolled onto his own back out of frustration. "Crap. Where are those bombers?"
Adrian pulled his camera up and snapped a few shots, the jets coming just into view. "Right here. Starting to hear them now, too."
Carbon pounced on the husky as bullets spat right past him. "You're a crazy idiot! Don't do that!"
"Carbon..." Adrian rested his arms and relented, instead futilely trying to wipe the otter's eyes clear through the mask. "You're crying, lad."
"Well, don't nearly get yourself killed then!" Carbon broke free out of embarrassment and stuck his head over the barricade right as the jets blasted overhead. "Woah."
Everyone on the safe side of the barricade ducked down for cover but Carbon kept his head high, his mask deflecting any small debris the bombing kicked up as he watch the towering licks of fire from the napalm strike. "Goddess... All those trees..."
Evelyn wrapped her arms around Carbon from behind and nuzzled his neck. "I know. It pains me to see it too. War, huh?" She raised her hand up and looked at the details, her skin looking very much like any of the leaves that blasted towards them. "It only hurts, and never heals."
"That's a pretty sick sense of priority there, little buddy." Adrian snapped a photo of the odd fur, his mask fogging over with tears and his glowing spots tinting more towards indigo in his emotional state. "But damn... Good shot."
Adrian walked onto the back of the chinook, snapping the occasional photo of some injured soldiers they'd brought back to base. When he got to the front of the vehicle however his attention diverted from the casualties to the glowing mass of fur sitting in the corner. "Hey, buddy. You scared of the sight of blood or something?"
Carbon looked up for a moment then went back to slouching with his gaze down to his hindpaws. "No, that's not it." He lifted his paws from his lap, revealing a wet spot in his crotch so dense it was starting to pool in his seat. "I don't want to get up. It's too embarrassing and... Evelyn says the smell might do more harm than good and..."
"Oh, blimey lad." Adrian wrapped his camera around his side and sat next to Carbon. "It's alright. I'll help you get somewhere safe like your tent. Gods know I had to do this enough with my sisters."
"You've gone through this before? How long am I going to be like this?" The otter slumped back and pressed his thighs together. "Please tell me something good here."
"Well if it's just that time of the month it's only a few days, but when they went into season there's no telling. Sissy went over a month once." Adri leaned to his side and nudged shoulders with his friend. "I think every time I had to cover and say I was pawing off so mum and pop didn't know a guy friend snuck in the house. They got pretty loud, yeah?"
"So... I might be like this for a month? More?" Carbon reached to his side and grasped at the husky's arm. "I don't think I can take it. I feel like I need to... uh..."
"Rut your bones? Aye, that's the point." Adrian repositioned the otter so he could tuck his head into his chest. "I'll be here to help keep you sane, lad."
"And I'm still here to help with your problem." Evelyn rubbed on Carbon's stomach light enough to tickle him. "The offer still stands."
"Y-Yeah. I'd like that." Carbon shuddered and flickered his lighting as Evelyn's phantom hand slid lower. "Adrian? Maybe we shouldn't be so close right now."
"What? Oh, this?" The husky shifted the beginnings of an erection so it was less apparent. "Sorry, little buddy. That smell you're giving off sort of does that on its own. I'll behave."
"N-No, I m-mean..." Carbon's words trailed off into a light groan as Evelyn reached her destination. "Goddess, that feels amazing..."
"Carbon?" Adrian pushed back for a moment, then shook his head and smiled when he saw the mustelid shaking and rolling his hips. "So she can do that much for ya', yeah? Lucky sod."
"S-Sorry."
"Nah, don't be. You do what you need to do." Adri leaned back and started to get up. "I'll leave you to that. You deserve a little privacy."
"No!" Carbon reached out and reeled the husky back in, the bigger guy slipping too far and embracing the otter. "Um... Please, I'm nervous. I've never done this and I--"
"Shh. Just relax and let Evelyn do whatever she's doing." Adri repositioned so he wasn't baring down so much weight on the little guy, but continued to hold him close. "I said I'd be here for you so I am. Not sure I can really help though."
"Ah!... Y-You're doing en-nough. I just... want to f-feel another person wh-when I..."
Adrian grinned and gave an earnest hug. "I make you feel safe, hmm? Well that's a proper compliment."
"It's not like I-I see you as--" Carbon swatted right through Evelyn's arm and she paused her pleasuring for a bit. "I like being around you. You're a nice guy."
"And you're a great kid. But don't stop on my behalf."
"Uh, you heard him..." Evelyn curled her virtual fingers again and went back to work, causing the otter to jump in pleasure. "Damn that feels good."
"I remember the first time I figured out I could do that. Wasn't much younger than you are now and--"
"Hey, I'm older than--" Carbon paused as a shudder swam over him and then softened his tone. "I'm older than you think. I'm twenty-six."
"That's older than me, lad." Adrian pulled his head back and looked Carbon in the eyes. "Gotta be a joke, right?"
"No, it's not." Evelyn read her host's mind properly and ceased her actions again, allowing Carbon his full concentration. "I know. I'm odd and not a guy anymore... and now I'm twice the age I look. I'm a freak, I get that."
"A freak? No." Adrian brought a paw up to Carbon's neck and rubbed a thumb across his jaw. "You're fun to be around. And yeah you're a bird for now but... well, you make a damn sexy one. I think I like your face a bit better than it was, actually. Softer and all. The longer hair too, maybe."
"Doesn"t mean I'm not a freak. I can't even breathe regular air."
"You're not a freak. Anyone that would call you one is the real--"
"And what do you know about that, mister perfect and handsome?!" Carbon started to blush a very noticeable cyan beneath his grey fur once he realized what he just said.
Adrian smirked and pulled Carbon in for a kiss on the forehead. "It's alright, mate. I've been called a freak enough myself. I'm gay."
"Uh...?"
Evelyn pulled her hand free and sighed, her fun apparently coming to an end. "It means he likes other men instead of women, Carbon."
"You like men... Oh goddess, and I just..."
"Shh..." Adrian pulled the otter in for another soft peck on his forehead to sooth him. "It's nice to hear that and all, but I know you didn't mean it that way. You spout a bunch of nonsense when you're in heat."
"But I..." Carbon gave in and took the rope he'd been thrown to pull himself out of his hole. "Now it's just awkward. I'm not sure I can finish taking care of things like this."
"Oh, yes you can." Evelyn gained a devilish smile as her hand went back down Carbon's pants. "I just wanted you to enjoy yourself. The results are easy."
In a split second Carbon lurched forward into Adrian's arms, a light climax instantly flushing across him from his lower body upward. "Oh, crap! Goddess!"
"Buddy? What's this?" Adri held onto his friend and rubbed his back as he rode out his first orgasm. "Shh... It'll be fine, mate..."
Carbon jerked and quivered a bit longer, eventually regaining enough of his facilities to right himself. "S-Sorry. Eve just decided to end things."
"‾Oh‾. Well... was it good? Help out any?"
"A bit. I mean, if felt nice and all..." The otter rested his head on the husky's shoulder and tried to correct his breathing. "It still isn't enough, but I think I'm good for a while."
"Just 'nice', eh? I hope you find a good girl for yourself one day. Might change that." Adrian helped his friend sit up straight and found himself lifting the collar of Carbon's shirt. "Hey, you always have these freckles? They're cute."
"Freckles?"
Evelyn peeked behind him as well and then spun herself around, emulating the new spots on the back of her own shoulders. "Yeah, sorry. I got a bit caught up in helping you and lost track of some things. I can suppress those again in a little bit."
"Huh? Suppress them?" Carbon spied the glowing speckles on Eve's back and pressed further. "What do you mean by that?"
"Oh, crap. I didn't mean to say it that way. Orgasms don't mesh with me too well, I guess." The plant girl turned back around to pleadingly look back to her host. "It's only because I wanted you to fit in. I planned on slowly rolling a few things out once you were ready to handle them and--"
"When I'm ready? Hell, Eve..." Carbon stood up and paced back and forth in the limited range of his air supply tether. "I'm not even going to argue. Just stop it. Okay? No more secrets. No more babying me. No more holding things back. Are we clear?"
"Y-Yeah." Evelyn shrunk down to about a foot tall and got out of his way. "You're obviously old enough now, Carbon. I just wanted to see you grow up normally."
"Then stop controlling my life."
"Carbon... This is how my kind just do things. I can't help it." Eve slumped against the front of the helicopter in defeat. "I'm sorry. I really am. I'll... I'll let you slip into your full self. I'll do whatever you tell me to."
"Eve... Shit." Carbon took a deep breath and then gently picked up the flower girl. "No, I'm sorry. I still want to be your friend. But friends don't hide things from each other. Right?"
"I guess not."
"Then you can see why I'm angry. I know you can feel it yourself." Carbon sat back down and placed Evelyn in his lap. "If I stand out even more, I'll still have you at my side to help me through it. That's all I want. Don't worry about whether I can handle change, Evelyn."
Adrian timidly spoke up once there was a gap of silence. "Everything alright, Carbon?"
"Yeah." The otter reached for his portable air system and began fumbling with the fixtures. "I might get a few surprises in the near future, but we're fine. Both of us are great."
"Good to hear." Adrian stood and waited for Carbon to finish transitioning to his portable unit. "Then would you two like to get cleaned up and maybe get a bite to eat?"
With a nod and slight smile from Evelyn, Carbon stood up and took the husky's arm. "Sure thing. Lead the way, handsome."
