The Warrior of Ice

Part Two - Sanctuary

Hey Everyone,

Finally completed the second installment of "The Warrior of Ice."

Unfortunately part two contains no smut (I know right...trust me i had plans for it too. That's why you're all here, i know that's why i am!), but as i wrote i found my pages grew longer and longer and that i ended up adding more information and details that i couldn't cull because it would assist the story later on down the track, and i culled a lot already. I wish i could write all the details i have in my head but i would be here for months. Also i broke this part off where it ends otherwise if i had kept going with what i originally wanted in part two, it would be double this length. At least it gets out for the readers.

So, I'm aware that it may be a little less smutty than usual and maybe a little dry, but as the story progresses i can ensure you that the smut will flow with the release of part three. Just bare with me.

Please enjoy and I would love to hear your comments and ideas. Positive critisizm is ALWAYS appreciated.

The Warrior of Ice - Part Two - Sanctuary

Written by AusWolf

The warmth of my mother's body radiated as she hugged me close. My body groaned with arousal as her female scent wafted in the air overpowering me and causing my heart to race. Whatever near or distant thoughts I had been thinking before I had approached her had now completely vanished from my mind. All I could focus on was the words she had muttered before her embrace. Simple words I had heard many times before, yet I had been trying my hardest to not think about them for the past few months.

I concentrated hard trying to calm my body down, thinking of the forest, the trees and river I attempted to distract myself from her scent. In the last few months my changing body had become harder to control around females, their scents having the similar reaction on me, taking control of my primal instincts. No matter how hard I tried I couldn't help letting my mind run wild every time I came in contact with one and the level of restraint I had to use to prevent loosing total control or embarrassment was growing each day.

Inevitably I knew this day would come and there was absolutely nothing that I could do to stop it. Today was indeed my name day. On any other name day this meant celebrations, gifts and family, but not this year. This was my Seventeenth name day. It was also the day that I would be leaving to begin my military training away from my family, friends, and the safety of the Castle. If I was being honest with myself, I was nowhere near ready for this, and it scared me terribly.

My mother pulled me from her chest and held me at arm's length, her kind face examining my expression. I watched as she looked me over, noticing my damp fur, but saying nothing. Her face sunk a little in concern as she stared my face our eyes meeting before mine darted away breaking our gaze.

"You ok Arryn?" she questioned softly, before she spoke again "you're worried, I can tell."

"I'm not worried." I replied, trying to make my voice sound full and confident. She laughed slightly.

"Do not lie to me pup. You're a terrible liar," her voice still filled with humour, "I'm your mother, I notice these things."

It was true; I had never been a decent liar. I was never able to lie to my mother and get away with it. Ryn on the other hand was as silver tonged as they came. My eyes met hers again.

"Maybe a little," I mumbled so quietly that only she could hear. "I'm not ready for today."

Her face turned to understanding as she bought me in for another hug. This time her arms crushing me against her body. Her uncovered breasts pressing against my neck. My heart sped as I held my breath. Her voice rumbled from her throat as she spoke against my body.

"There is absolutely nothing to be worried about. Every wolf experiences the fear about leaving home, but this is an exciting time. You're no longer a child. You get to make something of yourself and be part of the pack. You should be excited to finally be able to make your own choices and start an adult life."

"But I like not having to make choices." I whined back. Her body shook with laughter.

"Ahh, you sound exactly like Fintan when he came of age."

"Fintan was worried about leaving?" I murmured. Her head shifted to look down at me, our faces meeting.

"Petrified. Although it was different for him." She replied. "Trust me, it will take some time to get use to leaving home, it always does. Even I hated leaving my family when I married your father. But after a while you don't even remember why you were scared in the first place, it becomes natural. Every single wolf has to eventually become an adult; we all started out as you are now." Her voice now full of reassurance.

I could feel my heart beating slower in my chest, her words sending a calming wave over my body. How I wished I could just stay here with her. I hated not knowing the next time I would be able to see her after today. That scared me more. She ended her hug and I turned to face my sister Asha who was standing patiently nearby clearly unimpressed that she had been missing out on our conversation.

"Good morning my lady" I said playfully as I bent down on one knee, bowing, before scooping her up in my arms into a hug. The young pup giggled and squealed in my arms as I ruffled her head fur.

"Happy name day Arryn," she managed between her laughter, her high pitched voice trill as she spoke.

"Thanks Ashie," I said before gently placing her back on the ground. She then spun off, running through the nearby box garden beds screaming and giggling.

"I'm going to miss her and Ryn most," I admitted.

"You will see them again soon enough. Ryn will be fine, he was old enough to remember Fintan leaving. No doubt he will miss having an older brother though," her smile turned kind again, understanding. I forced a broken smile back.

A small yawn came from my mother's back and the small pup begun to stretch and move in the cloth sling.

"Koa's awake. Asha can be so loud sometimes," she mumbled, her eyes scanning the area looking for the playing pup nearby. "I better take him inside for a rest. What times your lesson today?"

I groaned in protest. I had forgotten about my Adjai lesson.

"Can't I just skip it today, you know, name day and all?" my mouth pulled into a toothy grin.

"No," she challenged. Clearly not impressed by my attempt to so quickly ditch my lesson. "Master Calder came by early this morning to make sure you were attending."

My eyes rolled back into my head, "Ughhh"

"Also, your father wanted to speak to you when you woke. If I had known you would be asleep for so long I would have sent someone in to wake you" she added. "He's down at the Military docks, doing something about construction improvements," her paw waved in the air, clearly showing her lack of interest. "I'd try and get him before your lesson; you know what he will be like with today."

Koa started to grumble and moan indicating time for my mother to leave. Her head looked over her shoulder at him before she turned back to me.

"I will see you later tonight at your feast, don't keep your father and Master Calder waiting," she ordered.

She then turned and started walking towards the castle, Asha trailing her through the gardens. I stood there watching her walk away, the feelings of nervousness and worry came flooding back and my stomach lightly churned. I turned slowly and faced the large Iron Gate that sat at the end of the castles gardens and out into the Royal district of the city. I willed my legs to move and started to cross the large expanse of grass towards the gate. As I walked my mind replayed the conversation with my mother. She was right of course. I was not the first and certainly wouldn't be the last wolf to leave my pup-hood behind and become an adult. It still didn't ease the anxiety I felt not knowing what I was heading into. I would have to try and be stronger. If Fintan had done it then surely I could. At least I didn't have to worry about being named successor to my father when he stepped down like Fintan had when he turned seventeen. For that I was grateful.

I reached the large black iron gates that sat between the castles tall stone walls. Stationed at either side stood two Royal Peacekeepers, their menacing forms like carved statues as the surrounding nobles in the Royal district bustled by on their daily business. I crossed the threshold of the gate and stepped out onto the large stone floored town square, the Peacekeepers shifted sharply to attention at my presence. The square was a busy mixture of nobles, dignitaries, servants, and merchants, their stores packed with assorted items, food, weapons, jewellery and trinkets. Each one was going about their business exchanging coin, conversing with others or moving between meetings and jobs.

In the crowds I could easily make out two medium sized canines, clearly not of wolf decent. Their robes were dyed black with golden trim around their cuffs and openings. Probably nobles from the nearby canine city of Farreld, here on business. One of the males had short tan coloured fur the other long white fur, his hair in locks that were pulled back into a braid that ran across one shoulder and down the front of his robe. It wasn't uncommon for other canines to visit from the neighbouring city. Usually they spent most of their time in the Military Quarter, or in the Traders district and the docks. Rarely they were seen this far north in the city though. I watched as they weaved through the crowds and out of sight.

I headed through the district towards the Military docks on the eastern side of the city. The large manor houses of the Betas and nobles towered over me, casting shadows across the entire stoned walkway as I walked the extensive length of the district. Every few houses a Royal Peacekeeper stood silent, unmoving, their heads scanning the passing crowds, looking for disturbances or those not authorised to be in the district. Most brandished menacing looking metal weapons and thick leather armour that covered their chests, arms, shoulders, and legs. Their distinctive green and gold cloaks moved gently in the soft wind.

Heads turned and stared as I passed the others in the district. Some offered greetings; some bowed slightly or nodded their head in acknowledgement. I always felt uncomfortable when they did this, their eyes watching my every move, entranced on what I was doing or where I was heading. Growing up as the son of the Alpha I was well use to this. Still it didn't ever stop being a continuous source of frustration.

I reached the large wooden gate that bordered the Royal district and the City Square Residences, an area at the centre of the city where middle class citizens resided and worked. Majority of them were traders, merchants, and business owners that made enough coin to live comfortably. I stared into the district; its occupants easily tripled the amount of those in the Royal district. Its citizens buzzed in swarms as they made their way through the large market square that was situated in the centre of the district. My father often took my brothers and I here on yearly celebrations, they would serve a variety of foods, sweets and unusual things one usually wouldn't expect to see in the Royal district. Each visit was an experience and something out of the norm from the mundane Royal life and regimen.

Standing either side of the large gate were three Royal Peacekeepers, their heads sweeping those entering and leaving the joining districts. I turned and begun to walk towards them. The smallest one closest to me caught a glimpse of my approach and called out in command to alert the others. All six turned in sync to face me before standing to attention.

"Prince Arryn, Good morning." The smallest of the six greeted in a flat monotone voice, his face expressionless. Cold. The black furred wolf looked like he was only in his early 30's. His body was hidden by thick leather armour that was sewn together with thick cord holding it to his frame. The only part of his body visible was his medium sized sheath that was covered in the same coal black fur. Under his sheath his furry sack held two medium sized stones that hung low in the summer heat.

I had learnt at a young age to not expect any kind of warmth or friendliness from the cities Royal Peacekeepers. My father had told me long ago they were trained to deal with dangerous criminals, thieves, murderers and lawbreakers. Their compassion trained out of them making them formidable guards. It was not to be taken personally by any means, but when a city Guard or Peacekeeper elected to become a Royal Peacekeeper their strenuous training usually resulted in them becoming the cold, expressionless guards that were expected to protect the most important citizens of the city.

On the right side of his chest burnt into his skin showed his Military rank of Royal Peacekeeper. Four vertical lines sat atop a longer horizontal one at the bottom, the mark giving clear indication to the city's residents of his status. The horizontal line appeared healed but fresher than the others. On his left was a medium sized horizontal line that denoted him as having no Adjai abilities. A regular, as Master Calder sometimes called them. My eyes lifted from his chest and up to his face, his eyes followed mine.

"I require escort to the Military Docks to meet my father." I instructed timidly, embarrassed he had caught me staring at him.

Suddenly the two rear wolves turned facing the City Square district forming a pair.

"Of course Prince Arryn." He nodded, "Have a good day," the wolf finished before he and the remaining three turned, returning to their positions under the gate.

"Please stay close," the larger of the two paired Peacekeepers instructed and begun walking towards the Military docks through the bustling crowd. I kept up pace behind them as they cleared a path, the cities citizens flowing out of the way of the intimidating wolves as they progressed forward through the crowds.

After a short while battling the packed streets we arrived at the gate that entered into the Military Docks. The usual six Peacekeepers stood frozen between the gates walls. My escorts proceeded across the gates threshold and continued to walk as I followed behind. The strong smell of the ocean, fresh fish and salt flooded my nose. The air was a breath of relief after the congested market place. As we rounded the corner I was met by the ocean far off into the distance, its blue and green colours swirling and reflecting in the sunlight. The docks were built along the extensive coastline that started at the base of Mount Greymound and continued through the Military docks and finished at the city wall towards the end of the Trade Docks.

I knew the Military docks well. My father often took my brothers and I here when he was doing his duties around the city or teaching Fintan and I about the Military troops and movements. I loved to watch the military ships arrive and leave, their crews made up of the city's best and most feared warriors from the adjacent Military Quarter. The docks were the only place I could go with my father's escort where I would be able to see the warriors of my father's military close up. Each one of them an Idled hero to all young male wolves and something to aspire to. Every wolf a trained weapon to be used to protect the city or surrounding allies. Towards the waters edge large wooden ships were moored to the piers, their crews nowhere to be seen. In fact the docks appeared to be deserted, except for the occasional worker building, fixing or moving supplies around.

My father was easy to find amongst the near empty dockyards, a few other wolves surrounding him. As we approached I could make out two of the wolves as well as my father's four personal Peace Keepers standing silently off to one side. My father was standing closest to a wolf I knew as the Military Dock Master, the wolf who was in charge of the daily running of the Docks. He was a tall, brawny male with brown and white fur that I had met on many occasions. He was holding a large piece of parchment between his paws; my father staring at it from his side. Two smaller wolves stood in a pair standing closer towards the piers, their conversation heavily animated as they pointed and gestured towards parts of the district. I recognised the larger of the two as one of the cities architects. He was dressed in an elegant blue tunic, a stack of rolled parchments rested underneath his arm.

We crossed the remaining space and stopped a few paces short of the group. The Dock Master was the first to raise his head and look towards me, his face surprise upon recognising who I was. His head turned towards my father and I heard him mutter something to him. My father's head snapped up instantly and towards my direction. His mouth pulled into a wide toothy smile.

"My boy, you're awake!" he bellowed happily as he turned his body to face me.

"Morning Father, you wanted to see me?" my mouth pulled into a small smile.

He walked past the group of wolves toward me, the two Peacekeepers splitting down the middle to accommodate his presence. Close up he really was one of the biggest males in the entire city. He stood well and truly clear of the tallest Peacekeeper here, his height almost twice mine. His well-built body rippled muscle from every part of him, his grey fur glistened in the sunlight.

My eyes flickered across his menacing body, attracted to his gold and silver plate armour that was moulded to his torso, upper legs and arms. Intricate floral detail carved along their outer edges, a raised wolfs head insignia detailed in the centre of his chest plate. He was wearing his favourite summer cloak, a deep green colour with golden thread patterning. It attached at his shoulders on his chest plate and ran to the ground.

Without trying my eyes drew to his groin, it impressive size unable to be overlooked. His thick sheath was larger than any of the other males present, and almost three times their size. His furry sack swung with each step he took, their large heavy contents straining against the skin, the outline of each massive orb clearly visible. I had seen my father's wolf hood ever since birth but within the last few months I had only just started to become conscious of its actual size. Questions about my own wolf hood had started coming to my mind every now and then, questions that were yet to have answers. Recently I had even started feeling slightly embarrassed at the size of mine when I stood near him, clearly inadequate. My eyes moved from his groin and met his piercing bright red eyes as he approached me.

His enormous paw playfully slapped my cheek as he spoke, "Ahh my boy," he crooned. "Nice to see you making the most of your day," he teased.

I grabbed his paw with mine and pushed it away. He faked an expression of shock.

"Watch out men you don't want to anger the newest pack adult," he teased. His smile widening again before his giant arm enveloped my head and I was dragged into a shoulder hug. I couldn't help but laugh as he continued to squash me under his arm until he released me from his grip, my head fur all mattered and sticking out.

"Congratulations pup, about time I reckon." He beamed proudly.

"Thanks," I replied, still slightly disorientated.

"How you feeling? Excited?" he questioned.

"Not really," I shrugged nonchalantly, an attempt to stop my real feelings from showing.

He laughed, "The pup turns seventeen today and he is already bored." He laughed. "I was uncontrollably with excitement when I turned seventeen. Ready to take on the world, kill something, kill anything really, choose a mate, all the good stuff," my father boasted, directing it towards the other wolves now watching our discussion. They laughed.

"You'll start enjoying yourself soon, I can guarantee it," he smiled. "So what's on for the rest of the day before your celebration feast?"

"Adjai training," I groaned. "Do I really have to go?"

If anyone was going to let me off from my training it would be him. He chucked, knowing my distaste for the training sessions.

"Well it is your last lesson with Master Calder before you move into the Military district." His tone was now a more serious one. "He has been training you for a few years now; you at least owe him the courtesy of attending his final lesson with you."

As much as I hated to admit, he was right. Master Calder had spent an unmeasurable amount of time with me over the years since I had first come into my abilities. Although each session was tediously painful to endure I had to give Master Calder credit for sticking with me and trying to help improve my skills, even if there were none present.

"I'd better go find him it's almost noon," I added.

"Good pup," he said proudly, hitting me on the back lightly. "No doubt he will want to talk to you about your Adjai training now you are moving on. I will see you tonight at your name day feast." He finished before turning and walking back to the others who were now discussing something on a map of the city.

I turned to face my Peacekeeper escorts, who had remained silent the entire time.

"My trainer will be waiting for me at the Royal district gate," I informed. Both wolves turned on their heels and begun walking off towards the way we had originally come.

We crossed the Military docks and entered back into the bustling City Square, the fresh clean salty air replaced by the heavy smell of the markets and its patrons nearby. My escorts led the way as they marched through the thick crowds until we arrived back at the large familiar gate. As we walked closer I was able to make out the tall lanky dark grey wolf leaning against the wall just inside the Royal district, his head hidden under the deep blue hood of his body length robe.

"Master Calder!" I called out, unsure if my voice was lost over the nearby crowds.

His head rolled in the direction of my voice as he searched the passers-by until he found me. He pushed off the wall, walking towards me. As he got closer I could make out his face, still hidden by his hood. There was hardly anything to the wolf who appeared to be in his late 40's or early 50's. I'd never had the courage to ask. He had little to no visible muscle, and his fur was slightly shaggy and unkempt as it ran across his body. He didn't give the appearance of old age, but instead portrayed someone who had seen many full years and experiences.

"You're late," he barked, annoyance in his tone. He lifted his paws up to his head, removing his hood. His face displayed no emotion, his usual gruff appearance.

"Sorry," I apologised, "My father wanted to see me this morning before my lesson."

He looked up at the sky finding the sun then back down to me, his face unimpressed.

"I slept in," I added sheepishly.

"Ah," he snorted, clearly hearing what he wanted. "Well at least you made it, all things considering today." He continued.

He stared down at me. His brilliant blue eyes were slightly darker than mine giving a more sapphire appearance compared to my near ghostly blue ones. As our stare broke I couldn't help look down at his chest. Across both sides of his chest I could make out his Military rank burned into the surface of his skin, long since healed. Each side consisting of three different sized circles, one inside another, and a single half circle surrounding the left side of both burns. The markings displayed his rank as a Master water Adjai. I couldn't help glance down at my chest, void of any marking or scar. I had known for a while now that I would one day receive a mark identifying me as an Adjai and I knew that in the coming days or weeks my turn to receive my mark would come.

Although not entirely to blame, this was one of the reasons I had dreaded today for the past few months. Its arrival only bringing the reality to life. By law it was required that all pups upon adulthood were marked and recorded with their element to ensure they could be properly identified in the event one ever went rogue, or left the cities confines. The destructive power held by some a concern to the non-Adjai citizens.

"Congratulations on your seventeenth name day by the way," he muttered, his tone less abrupt.

Breaking my concentration I watched now as he directed his attention to the two peacekeepers nearby, "That will be all," He ordered. They nodded and begun walking towards their original positions at the gate. He turned to me.

"We will be heading into the forest today. Nothing strenuous, just a walk" he instructed, "Do you need anything else before we leave?"

As if asked the question directly my stomach growled loudly, his ears twitching at the strange noise. He raised an eyebrow.

"I think I missed lunch," I laughed, "Other than that, no nothing else."

He made a noise of annoyance in his throat, "Hopeless..." he muttered, before turning and walking a few paces to the nearest merchant. He picked up two apples from the stand before reaching into his pouch at his side. He flicked a small bronze coin at the merchant who fumbled trying to catch it, and without looking through the apples over his shoulder towards me. I caught them mid-air sinking my claws into their soft flesh from the force.

"Let's go," he ordered, before he set off through the busy street towards the Crafters district. I ran trying to keep with his quick pace.
