Chapter 7: The Ritual

Sam's carriage ride always seemed to go smoothly, and naturally it was the same as he, Colin, Trina and Sara were riding back to the cheetah's mansion the next morning; aside from the extra passangers, who were sitting with Colin between them.

Albert smiled a bit. "That's great. I'm glad that you two have fallen in love with each other. The ceremony for Colin's rebirth will take place the day after tomorrow. In order to prepare, Colin is only allowed to stay around me. I'm sorry Tracy, but because you're also a celestial being you cannot be near him at all. The ritual may take away your powers as a celestial being if you are near him."

Sam smiled and gave Colin a quick kiss. "I understand father. You have to pass along half of your mark, right? And then when the ritual is complete he gets the other half."

"I'm glad to see you remembered your ceremony. Is that okay with you, Colin?" Albert asked the young boy.

Colin felt a slight twinge of fear as he was told he'd be away from Sam, but gave a nod. "Yes sir...that's fine with me," he said faintly before returning the kiss Sam gave him, slowly stood up, and began to walk for the door. "I'll um...wait outside if you two need to talk..."

The two walked together to the garden where a stone platform had been place. Sam directed Colin to the middle of it inside a circle. The platform was circular and had was decorated with symbols. Colin was told to sit on his knees in the middle of a circle that had been drawn in the middle. Then there were four symbols that were drawn in each of the four cardinal directions.

There was enough time for Sam to explain each of the symbols. To the north, was Water, which flowed with ice cold chill to give life to the world. To the east was Earth, from which life was formed, giving homes to the plants and creatures that inhabited it. To the west was Wind, which gave them the air they breathed. And finally, to the south was Fire, which burned with passion and represented the passion and warmth of love.

As Sam explained each symbol, Colin listened to each definition with a dreamy smile. He felt like something was at work inside his body, or perhaps it was the feel of an event soon to come that filled him up, but either way he didn't want it to end.

"Normally, the person who is giving up their powers teaches the new Celestial Being the language of the stars. But I think I'll let Tracy...I mean, Sam...teach you," Albert said as he approached the two. "We are just waiting for the other two. They are finishing getting dressed."

Colin looked over to Albert, bowing his head softly before he began to wonder something. "The other two? Who else is coming to this?" he asked while he looked around. All of the other pets were here, who were the mystery guests?

"There are four symbols for a reason, Colin. My father will stand on North while I stand on South. But we still need two more celestial beings for East and West. Teal is a black wolf. She is the newest Celestial Being that I've seen, and probably the most immature. But that will come with time. She will stand on West. And finally, we've got Zachariah. He's a very old badger. But he's very wise. His stories are always amazing. He's going to be on East," Sam said. As he finished, the other two appeared in the same kind of robes that him, Colin, and Albert were wearing.

The sight of two other Celestial Beings sent a chill down Colin's spine. He couldn't even guess how old they were, and his mind seemed to tell him it would be rude to ask such a thing. Staying silent, he bowed his head to the wolf and badger.

The two approached and while the wolf just turned her nose, the badger smiled. "A very respectful young man. I like that. Unlike this hooligan," Zachariah said as he gently rubbed Colin's head.

"Hooligan? But you were the one who recommended that I become a Celestial Being, old man," the snooty wolf said.

"Quiet you young bitch. I still believe you will make a fine Celestial Being. But it's going to take a long time before you finally realize what I'm talking about. Now, Colin. Before we begin, I want to know if you're truly ready for this responsibility. I must warn you that you will see loved ones grow old and die. And there will be nothing you can do about it, even if you want to."

Colin listened to the pair, almost as if they were a married couple, and managed to keep himself from laughing. When he heard Zachariah talk about seeing loved ones grow old and die, he gave a nod. "I do understand sir...I'm ready to accept that..."

"Good. Then we're ready to begin," the badger said as the four took their places. The four each raised their right hands up towards the center. "We will each ask you a question and if you answer with honesty, then this power is bestowed upon you."

Albert went first with his question. "Colin, do you promise to not abuse your powers to harm others that have done you no wrong?"

Colin nodded as the badger explained what would happened, and he listened to Albert's question. As he listened, his mind began to think about how hard it would be for Sam once his father was gone. "I promise to not use my powers to harm others that have done no wrong to me," he said, his eyes showing a hint of sadness for Albert though no one noticed.

Next, it was Teal's turn to ask a question. "Do you promise not to use your powers for your own personal gain or for the personal gain of those who do not need it?"

Colin listened, thinking for a moment that if it meant he couldn't help people who were in need, but decided he would ask that later. "I promise."

Zachariah was third to ask his question. "Do you promise to always try to listen to my stories when I tell them to you?" This was the first question that was a personal question and the badger knew that Colin would ask him about why he asked that question later.

That question nearly made Colin snicker, due to it being so random and unexpected. Quickly calming himself down he looked to Zachariah and said, "I promise sir."

Zachariah chuckled a bit himself. "I'm glad to hear it."

Finally, it was Sam's turn. At first, he wasn't sure what he wanted to ask. He knew that he should ask something about him promising to not abuse his powers. Then he thought about asking to do something practical that would later make him a better person. But then a single question popped into his head and he knew what he had to ask.

"Colin...Will you love me and treasure our moments together for the end of time?"

Sam smiled as he, Teal, and Zachariah stepped off of their symbols, leaving just Albert and Colin on the platform.

Colin slowly stood up, walked over to Albert, his mind in thought of what was to come. When he reached the North symbol, he gave the fellow human a soft smile.

Albert went into the circle. "This circle is where we begin. And this circle is where we end." Albert and Colin began to glow about the same brightness. "I pass my powers to this young individual who has kept his word and has been entrusted with my powers to carry on in my place."

Albert's glow began to dim as Colin's began to grow brighter. "My being is ready to return to the stars. I have been blessed and cursed. And it is time for both my curse and my blessing to end. I am ready to live my last month and join those who I have seen die before me." Albert's glow was barely noticeable. He then gave a short prayer in a language no one but the other three Celestial Beings could understand and his glow faded away completely. Colin was glowing bright and everyone watched as that glow slowly began to melt into his being.

The ritual had been complete.

During the time his body was coated in a bright glowing light, Colin felt as if he was being given a great amount of power. It was almost too much for him to bear, but before he fell to the floor he remembered Sam; Sam and how much he loved him. After the long process and when the glowing light melted into his body, Colin opened his eyes.

Albert smiled and stepped off of the platform. He then looked back at Colin and gave him a bit of a grin. "Well, aren't you coming?"

Colin looked over to Albert and nodded, walking slowly down off the platform. His body felt new to him, as if he were nothing but a parasite inside of a larger being, controlling everything going on. Once he was off the platform, his eyes met up with Ellen's, and he realized he had to give her something. Walking up to her, he threw his arms around her in a hug and whispered.

Ellen happily returned the hug. "I love you too and congratulations."

One by one, everyone came over and gave their blessings to Colin. Teal talked to Colin for a bit and apologized for the way she had been acting earlier. Zachariah explained that each of his stories had a lesson and that he hoped that Colin would be able to find the lessons each time they met. The only person who hadn't approached Colin was Sam who was in the doorway to the hall that lead back to their room. He had a sly grin on that just called for Colin to come over.
