The sun is shining, the sky is clear, and the birds are chirping. It is a perfect day, but not for Lucas Mashner. A week has passed since he spoke to Mark about Eric. A long miserable week. Lucas has been thinking of Eric the entire time, no matter how angry he gets. One moment he is thinking, 'I hate you!' and the next, 'Do you really care about me?'

Lucas was sitting in his room on his bed. He hasn't gone to school for days. He has been depressed and his family has noticed it. Lucas has no siblings, but he does have both his dad and stepmom. His dad is large black and white husky, slightly smaller than himself, with dark brown eyes, and is an engineer for a major company. His mom stepmom is a short white and silver husky with the emerald green eyes and she works as a nurse in the local hospital. They are rarely home together. His dad works all day and his stepmom works all night. His parents are not around much, but do know when something is wrong.

"Honey, are you okay? Your father and I want to know what's wrong. Did something happen at school?" His parents were standing in the doorway.

Lucas turned toward them and said, "No, I'm fine."

"Son, tell me what's wrong. We'll help you with whatever it is." His father said in a soft and fatherly voice.

"Nothing's wrong dad. Can you guys just go away? Will it make you feel better if I go to school tomorrow? I was going to anyway." Lucas said, wanting to get rid of his parents as fast as he could.

"Please honey, tell us what's wrong we ca-"

"No, Rach, he said nothing's wrong. Let's let him be." His father said and slowly pushed his wife out of the room.

Lucas put his head down and continued to think of Eric.

Slowly Lucas gathered all of his school books and headed to his car. He got in and drove to school. He got there early like he has been doing since he met Eric. He immediately saw Eric going to his homeroom which was in his direction. Lucas backtracked and hid behind a locker out of plain sight. Eric walked by without seeing him.

"Hey Lucas, where have you been? I haven't seen you all week." Lucas jumped.

He swished around, tail brushing against Mark's nose and causing him to sneeze. "Why do you do that so much? It's creepy, and bless you."

"Not my fault you're so easily scared." Mark said while scrunching up his nose. "So where have you been?"

"I've been... sick."

"You are really bad at lying."

"I'm not." Lucas said with his ears drooping down.

"If you don't want to tell me, fine, but I think you should know, Eric has been worried." Lucas's ears perked up. "Yeah, every morning he has been waiting in front of the school and checking in the parking lot for your car. I think he even went to your house, well I know he went to someones house because I followed him, but he didn't knock and just turned back then left."

'Could he really care?'

"You should go and fi-"

"Mark?" Eric yelled down the hallway. He turned the corner and saw Mark talking to Lucas. Eric's eyes were wide with joy, but, when he saw Lucas look, he hid it. "Hey."

"Hi Eric." Lucas was happy to see him. He saw Eric's eyes. He was excited that he might get his friend back again. He now has hope. It wont happen on its own, so Lucas has to do something. "Can I talk to you," he looks over at Mark, "Privately?"

Mark looked at Lucas questioning what he was going to say. With the same look he said, "I have to go anyway. People to talk to and stuff." Mark walked away and out of sight.

"So.." Lucas looked down at the ground with his ears drooping again.

"Yeah..."

"You know what, I'm gonna say it. Eric, I'm sorry. If I knew you weren't, um, you know, gay, I wouldn't have done anything and just be friends. What I'm saying is, uh, can we be friends again? I miss spending time with you."

"Oh, yeah, that would be okay, I guess."

"Really?" Lucas's ears flicked up and his tail wagged in excitement. "Awesome!" He pulled Eric into a hug. Eric tensed in the hug and Lucas let go immediately after realizing how awkward it was. "So... who was that doe you were with last week?"

"Oh, her, um, she was Sarah? Sadie? Something with an S. She is in one of my classes."

"You two dating now?" His ears went down slightly.

"No."

"What happened in the closet?"

"We were kissing and shit then she wanted to go further and I kinda stopped her."

"She wanted to have sex and you stopped her?"

"Yeah, I told her I wasn't ready. She gave me her number and told me to call her sometime then we walked out."

"That's it?"

"Yep, that's it." There was a couple seconds of silence. "Do you want to do something today or sometime?"

Lucas looked at him in slight disbelief. He thought it would at least take a couple of days before they started doing things together. "Oh, yeah, totally, that would be fun. What do you wanna do?"

"Let's, uh, I dunno, catch a movie or something."

"A movie? Let's go see that new one about time travel or something!" Lucas was full of excitement. His tail was wagging as fast as it ever has before and he was listening to Eric with his ears up.

"I have absolutely no idea what movie you are talking about."

"You know... that one... with that actor... it has 'whats her name'... oh, it's the time traveling movie!"

"You find out the name and then we'll see it, okay?"

"Will do." The bell rang signaling the start of the day. "Did you notice anyone else walk by?"

"No... wow, we can be extremely oblivious."

"Well anyway, see you later."

"Yeah, see ya."

Eric walked away to his homeroom. Lucas watched him walk and smiled. He hasn't been this happy since he met Eric. He turned himself around and went on with the day.

After school Lucas went to his car to wait for Eric. He waited for ten minutes and was starting to get impatient. He was about to go and look for Eric himself when he spotted him walking toward the car. "What the hell took you so long?"

"What? It's only been a minute." He looked very distracted and happy.

"It's been ten."

"Really?" Eric checked his phone. "Oh, wow, I'm so sorry! I got a little distracted!"

"What were you doing? What could possibly take ten minutes? We can't get stuff before the movie because it'll be too late!" Lucas said exasperated.

"I was talking to that doe from before. Her name is Samantha. We got talking and made a date for tomorrow!"

"Really? Good for you." Lucas lied to Eric. Hearing that really hurt him and he tried his best to hide that hurt.

"So, c'mon let's go see that movie!"

"Yeah, to the movie." Lucas said in a solemn tone which Eric didn't pick up on.

After the movie they went to a table and sat. "That was a really good movie. Nice pick."

"That's funny. I pick the movie, hardly understand what was going on, and you like it. What's the chance of that?"

"You didn't understand it? Ha, that was so easy to follow!" Lucas's phone buzzed and he checked it. "I'll explain it from the beginning so-" Eric continued to ramble on, but Lucas wasn't listening. He couldn't he was too focused on the text he got.

'HEY LUC, GUESS WHAT? IM BACK IN TOWN! MOVED IN THIS MORNING. CALL OR TEXT ME SOON. CANT WAIT TO SEE U BABE ;)'

"Get it now? Lucas? Hello? Earth to Lucas." Eric nudged his arm bringing him back.

"Wha- oh, yes totally agree with you."

"You think it's a good idea to shave all your fur off? let's get right to it then."

"Wait, what?"

"That's what I thought. What's got all your attention? What could possibly be more intriguing than me?" Eric joked.

Lucas looked back down at his phone. "Max texted me."

"Who?"

"Max Grath."

"And I should know who that is?"

"It's someone I knew from a couple of years ago. He's back in town and he wants too see me."

"Well, let's go see him then."

"Huh?"

"Let's go meet this mysterious Max Garth."

"Grath."

"Let's go meet this mysterious Max Grath." He corrected himself emphasizing on the pronunciation of Grath.

"You know what, I can't tonight. You can meet him tomorrow or something."

"I have an idea! Let's go out, the three of us. We can get to know each other over some pizza at Filanzzi's"

"You know I don-"

"Sweet, it's a date. Let's go."

"Okay..." Lucas responded a bit confused on what just happened and drove Eric home.

After he left Eric's house and got to his own he sat in his drive way. His phone buzzed again.

'I KNOW UR AWAKE LUC. U DONT GO TO SLEEP THIS EARLY. U IGNORING ME?'

Lucas stared at his phone then started to text.

'HEY MAX, SRRY BEEN BUSY. GONNA BE AT SCHOOL TOMRRO?'

'THATS THE 1ST THING U SAY? BUT YA, GONNA BE THERE'

'MEET ME IN THE OLD PLACE IN THE MORNING. TALK TO U THEN'

'OK, GOODNIGHT LUC'

'GOODNIGHT MAX'

'Is this really happening?' He thought. The day had started out slow and horrible for Lucas, but then he got his best friend back. At the end of the day he also got the news his old ex is back in town. 'Is this good or bad?' Lucas asked himself then went inside to his room. 'Only tomorrow can tell.'
