To Love A Hybrid: Stop the Press
Wow, never thought I would get this far in this series but it appears to have a special place in my heart. I want to give a big thanks to Duxton for lending me his OC Lilly and Sang for letting me kidnap Nick for this whole series. They play a big role and I thank them heavily. I also want to thank EVERYBODY for reading my writing and connecting with the characters. On a side note, I don't know how the government is run and don't care to. This is coming from my mind and it makes the story go easier. As always, leave your comments on how bad I did or good I did. That gives me the inspiration to keep writing. Enjoy the next chapter.
The hustle and bustle of the city didn't bother the limo any as it pulled up alongside the curb. The valet waited for the it to stop before opening the door. A middle aged man stepped out, his shoes coming in contact with the carpet laid out for all important guests. Fixing his suit, he walked to the front door which opened automatically. The cool breeze from the air conditioner washed over his short silver hair. His auburn eyes looked around the building before a slim lady walked in behind him. She had on a nice dark blue business skirt showing her smooth legs and black heels while a white button up shirt was tucked neatly inside. Strawberry red hair was tied neatly in a bun as thin glasses covered her aquamarine eyes. In her left arm she carried a red laptop that was set in sleep mode.
“Where's the meeting being held Joyce?” the man said with a deep voice.
“Floor twelve conference room mister Hanley,” Joyce replied crisply.
He nodded his head as they walked towards the elevator, passing a pair of great Danes dressed in security guards outfits that gave them a polite nod of their heads which was ignored by them both. The elevator opened with a ding as people got out, talking on their phones or drinking coffee. Getting in, they hit number twelve as the door closed and the machine hummed to life.
“Is everybody there?” Hanley asked.
“Yes sir. Just waiting for us.”
Hanley nodded as the doors opened up to a lush brown checkered rug that three, two seat couches sat upon around a small glass table that held assorted magazines on top. An elegant and beautiful painting of a jungle with a waterfall hung on the left side of the wall that was painted an eggshell white. The right side of the wall held large lettering with small lights behind the name 'Patheon'. A female beagle saw them approach the front desk as she bowed her head and smiled.
“Good morning folks. Welcome to Patheon. What can I do for you?”
“Nine fifteen meeting,” Hanley said.
The beagle looked down at the computer before nodding.
“This way please,” she said opening the door.
They followed her down the hall, passing by offices with glass doors. Inside were people typing away, talking on the phone, or talking to other people. They arrived at a pair of double oak doors which the beagle knocked on before opening it.
“Presenting Mr. Hanley and his assistant Joyce Phillips,” she said before walking out and closing the door softly.
Inside the room was a long, square table with people sitting around it chatting softly to each other. The shades were open letting the morning sun warm the room up. A projection screen was down on the right side showing a pie chart with numbers.
“Mr. Hanley, we've been expecting you,” a lady said at the head of the table.
“My apologies. The plane was delayed slightly,” Hanley said taking a seat along with Joyce.
“It happens. Now that you're here, we can skip the pleasantries and get down to business.”
She stood up and slammed her hands down on the table shaking it a little.
“I'm sick and tired of spending money to fix these fucking slaves. I've spent more money on fixing them then I'm making. Am I wrong in saying that goes for the rest of you?”
All around the table, the people nodded their heads in agreement.
“Isn't there a way we can bribe some of the doctors or have them work for us?” a man spoke up.
“We tried that. They were found out, fired, and sent to jail,” the lady said.
“Aren't there other hospitals that do inspections?”
“There are only eight hybrid hospitals in the country that are recognized and certified by the government to do hybrid inspections. And they all seem to coordinate with one main hospital, Express Scripts Hybrid Hospital.”
The projection screen showed all the hospitals with arrows pointing towards the middle one.
“Who's in charge of that one?”
“It was this man, Anthony Edwards,” the lady said showing his picture on the screen. “But now it's this person, Ryudo Peterson.”
A folder was passed around to everybody as they looked at it. It was a detailed portfolio along with everything he did.
“Number one in his class in hybrid diseases and bone structure. Honor student all around. Hand picked by Edwards to succeed him. Ninety seven percent success rate on getting hybrids up to working standards and living healthy lives. Sounds like a hybrid freak,” a man spoke up.
“Be that as it may, he's an obstacle that is costing us money,” the lady said.
“What do you suggest?” somebody spoke up.
“I'm open for anything. So if anybody has anything, speak up.”
Nobody spoke up as everybody was reading the portfolio or talking quietly to one another. Hanley read through the notes before speaking up.
“Peterson? Isn't he the son of Peter and Doris who run a billion dollar company?”
“That he is. They wanted him to follow in their footsteps but he apparently wanted to help these stupid slaves more,” the lady said disgustedly. “I can't believe a rich person like him is lowering himself to their level.”
Hanley rubbed his chin, feeling the stubble starting to grow in. Joyce tapped his shoulder and showed him the laptop screen. He looked at it before smiling.
“I think I might have something. Won't know anything for certain.”
“Something is better than nothing,” the lady said before looking at the clock. “Let's break for a bit and come back.”
Everybody stood up and stretched, leaving the room talking to each other. Hanley sat there reading the portfolio as the lady walked over and sat next to him.
“What's your idea Hanley? You usually come up with some good ones.”
“We can use his love of hybrids against him. I have a sort of reporter friend that's good at 'exposing' people.”
“You think it'll work?”
“It should. Because he's going to that same city to get supporters,” Hanley said, turning the laptop around.
She looked to see Congressman Kelley Gold shaking hands with people and smiling.
“What does he have to do with anything?”
“Let me worry about that Ivory,” Hanley said with a smile.
Ivory's phone rang in her pants pocket as she pulled it out and looked at the number.
“Very well, I'll leave everything to you. We'll come up with something else in the meantime,” Ivory nodded before answering her phone and walking out the door.
Joyce looked at Hanley who was watching a video of Gold speaking on a platform with no volume.
“We still have Lincoln's number at the World Metro News?”
“Yes.”
“Good. Call him.”
Joyce pulled out her phone, shifting through her contacts and finding Lincoln's number before hitting the dial button. The phone rang before a rough voice answered.
“World Metro news, this is Howard.”
“Lincoln, its Hanley.”
“Hanley you son of a bitch. What's going on?”
“Same old bull different day. Listen, you know Gold is coming to your city right?”
Lincoln snorted at that.
“That hybrid loving fucker is coming here? What for?”
“Supporters in hope to get that equal rights bills passed. But that's not why I'm calling. You know the Express Scripts Hybrid Hospital?”
“How can I not? All the hybrids, even the ones that work for me, won't stop talking about it. Saying they would rather live there then with their owners. That doctors treat them like equals instead of the slaves they are meant to be.”
“Well I want you to do an exclusive on that hospital.”
“Fuck that!” Lincoln spat angrily. “I'm not wasting lines and ink for those assholes. And even if I did, I don't have any reporters willing to go near that place with a ten foot pole.”
“Don't worry about that. I have the perfect reporter. All I need is at least a half a page. Maybe more.”
Fingers were heard drumming on a something for a few moments before a sigh.
“You're lucky I like you Hanley. A page and a half might cost me some subscribers, but I hope to get a good 'compensation' for doing this?”
“I always have your back don't I?”
“No comment. Just give me a call and I'll set everything up.”
“Thanks,” Hanley said hanging up. He took out his phone and hit speed dial, waiting a bit until a silky voice answered. “Ginger Grey, how are you beautiful?”
“What can I do for you sweetie?” Ginger asked.
“I need your 'expertise' for a newspaper article.”
“Sounds like fun darling. Who's the lucky guy?”
“Ryudo Peterson. He works at the Express Scripts Hybrid Hospital.”
Ginger chuckled at that.
“I do love a man in white. What do you want me to do?”
“Use your charm and see if you can get any dirt you can use on him. He's costing companies, and me, too much money on fixing hybrids to past inspections.”
“So you want me to whore myself at him?”
“Whore is such a vulgar word. Just use your feminine charm. Lord knows I fell for it a few times in my early days.”
“That you did,” Ginger said with a smirk he could tell was on her face. “Very well. I'll bring Rose with me. We get first class flight and hotel right?”
“Only the best for you.”
“You have a deal.”
“Perfect. Joyce will email everything you need.”
Hanley hung up and gave a smile.
“Maybe we can kill two birds with one stone. She might even get something on Gold while she's there. Now we sit back and wait,” he grinned, looking at the video again.

Kelley sat in the comfortable plane seat as the plane flew quietly without a sound. His eyes read over the paper in his hands at a steady pace. Laughter caught his attention as he looked up to see his daughter playing with a female cattle dog. It had blue mottled fur with red spots along the shoulders. Its left paw was pure white while its tail had a mixture of blue and white mixed together. Her eyes were the color of lilies in full bloom, thus her name. Gold just watched them play and laugh without a care in the world.
“Congressman?” a voice said snapping him out of his daydream.
“Yes?”
“Your schedule for tomorrow,” a lady said handing him a piece of paper.
He grabbed it and looked it over.
“I like it. We should be able to get lots of supporters for the bill.”
“Do you think it'll pass this time?”
Kelley looked at Lilly again who returned his look with one of her own along with a soft smile.
“It has to. This slavery has gone on for far too long. We humans should be capable of doing things for ourselves.”
The speaker crackled to life as the pilot spoke up.
“We'll be landing in ten minutes Congressman.”
“Okay sweetheart, its time to buckle in,” Kelley said, putting his stuff in the suitcase next to him.
“Okay daddy,” the little girl said, getting in the seat next to Lilly who buckled her in along with herself.
The plane descended, hitting the runway with a small bump before pulling to a stop next to two black jeeps where people in suits were waiting for him. The plane's steps unfolded and Kelley walked out followed by his daughter and Lilly. A shepard walked up and saluted before going at ease.
“Mr. Congressman, welcome. Your hotel's ready and waiting for you.”
“Thank you. What's your name?”
“Trevor sir.”
“Well Trevor, pleasure to meet you,” Kelley said sticking his hand out.
“Likewise sir,” Trevor said shaking it.
“Stop calling me sir. My name is Kelley.”
“But si...”
Kelley raised his hand making him go quiet.
“I gave you an order Trevor,” Kelley said firmly but held a genuine smile.
Trevor smiled, tail wagging happily as he nodded.
“Shall we go Trevor?”
“Absolutely Kelley. Let me get the door for you.”
Trevor opened the door as everybody huddled in. Closing the door, he nodded his head to the other people as they got into the other jeep. Climbing into the driver side, he started the jeep with a purr. Putting it in gear, he took off down the road followed by the other jeep.
“So Trevor, how long have you've been doing security?” Kelley asked.
“This is my first assignment. It's an honor to meet you. I hope your bill goes through.”
“You and me both. I'm tired of seeing people like you treated like dirt. We are suppose to be capable of taken care of ourselves and our families.
“Well spoken,” Trevor nodded stopping at a light.
They heard commotion to their left and looked to see a fox being yelled at and dragged by a leash on all fours. This got a growl from Trevor, but a gentle touch on his shoulder from Kelley calmed him down.
“One day, it'll all be over Trevor. In the meantime, be stronger then them.”
Trevor smiled before hitting the gas and pulling away.
“Do you have any family Trevor?”
“Yes. My mate and I are with a nice owner. We're expecting our first pup in a couple of months.”
“Well congrats. I hope it'll be a healthy pup.”
“Thank you. Here we are, at the Breeze Hotel.”
They pulled into the driveway as the valets opened the door. Kelley got out as there were a few reporters already down there snapping away and yelling questions. Trevor was already in front of Kelley, bearing his teeth making them keep their distance. Walking in the lobby, the manager was there to greet them.
“Welcome Congressman welcome. So glad you choose Breeze Hotel to stay and conduct business.”
“Thank you. I heard about you from a friend.”
“Oh? Who would this friend be so I can thank him.”
“That would be Ben.”
The manager frowned at that, looking at the pug who was cleaning the windows.
“You will thank him right?”
“Of......course Congressman,” the manager said through clench teeth.
“Why don't I believe that?”
“With all due respect Congressman, Ben is a......”
“What? Slave? Stupid hybrid not worth any attention?”
The manager swallowed seeing all eyes on him. He turned to the pug and forced a smile.
“Thank you for bringing the Congressman here Ben. You have mine and all the staff's thanks.”
“Thank you sir,” Ben said, tail wagging happily.
Kelley smiled as the manager turned back to him. He could see the anger and humiliation in his eyes.
“I'll show you to your suite. This way.”
They walked walked through the lobby to the elevator. It opened slowly as they bunched in. Floor twenty was pushed as the cab ascended upwards.
“We have the best cooks at your disposal Congressman. Anything you or your daughter want, just call.”
“Thank you.”
The doors opened to a lush royal blue rug. An English setter was vacuuming before looking up and bowing his head politely. They arrived at suite six as the manager slid the key card in. It was beautiful inside. The front held two leather love seats in front of a fire place. A nice size TV was positioned on top with speakers on each side. A pool table was in the corner underneath a small chandelier. The outside housed a pool with large lawn chairs and umbrellas. The bedroom held a large Queen Victoria bed with four posts and a curtain that blocked people from looking. The window had elegant red curtains that matched the covers as the rug was a cinnamon brown.
“What do you think Congressman? Is it too you liking?” the manager asked.
“Its great,” Kelley said, looking out the window at the city below.
“Excellent. We have a spare room in the basement for your slave.”
“She stays with me,” Kelley said.
The manager wanted to argue but Kelley turned and looked him straight in the eye.
“That will be all Ralph,” Kelly said, looking at his name tag.
“Of course Congressman. If you need anything, don't hesitate to call me personally.”
Kelley laughed at that as Ralph balled his fists before taking his leave. His daughter ran up to him and grabbed his hand.
“Daddy, can I have some ice cream?”
“Of course you can cutie. Trevor, do you mind taking Sonya down to the cafeteria?”
“Not at all. Come on Sonya. Let's go get some ice cream together.”
She cheered at that before skipping towards Trevor and making him yip as she held his tail. Trevor chuckled before walking out the door leaving Lilly and Kelley alone. Lilly walked over and held him from behind as they looked out the window together.
“You know love, that's not a good way to start.”
“Sorry. But that still pisses me off.”
Lilly chuckled before licking his neck. Kelley smiled before turning around and kissing her deeply, making them both moan happily. They broke off softly, foreheads pressed together and eyes closed.
“I'm going to make this bill pass Lilly. Then once it is, I will marry you.”
Lilly smiled at that. Every since Sheryl, Kelley's wife, died from cancer, she was all he had left. Lilly was bought by them for their daughter, Sonya, for companionship. It was a match made in heaven as Sonya loved Lilly like a sister. They did everything together, almost like she was one of the family. But when Sheryl came down with cancer, it hurt everybody. The funeral was the toughest. Kelley was devastated to the point of not functioning on all cylinders. If it wasn't for Lilly, he would've been done for. She was the pillar of support that he needed. Then, that support started to grow into love.
One night, they just let it happen. Once Sonya was put to bed, it was game on. The heat, passion, and lust they had was poured out. Her whines accompanied his moans in a beautiful symphony as they mashed their bodies together. His seed filled her womb not once, twice, but three times as it dribbled down and matted her fur. It was then as he held her in his arms, he decided to fight for the hybrids. With grim determination, he got a seat on the Congress floor and he fought tooth and nail to get the hybrids the rights they deserved.
It was an uphill battle as he knew it would be. People laughed at the notion as he saw the bill he wrote up literally get torn in two right in front of his face by the chairman. But he didn't let that stop him. He fought on, even going as far as to ask the president himself as to what he needed to get the bill passed. He said the best way to get the bill passed, is with a shit ton of supporters. With enough supporters, it could by-pass Congress and be signed by him. So he made it his goal to get the supporters he needed.
“Once this bill pass, I will gladly be your mate,” Lilly said with a smile and a soft kiss.
“Good. Sonya will be overjoyed,” Kelley said, caressing her cheek making her murr and close her eyes loving his touch.
A knock was heard at the door as it opened and Trevor came in with a laughing Sonya holding a bowl filled to the brim with strawberry ice cream topped with chocolate syrup and sprinkles. Lilly laughed before walking over and joining Sonya at the table.
“Are you going to eat all that? You'll spoil your appetite.”
“I got it for all four of us,” Sonya said with a smile.
“Four?” Kelley said looking at her.
“Uh huh. Daddy, Lilly, me, and Trevor.”
Trevor's ears perked at this.
“Me?”
“Yes. Come have some ice cream with my family.”
Kelley looked as Trevor's ears wilted and a tear ran down his cheek. Kelley smiled before walking over and patting his shoulder. Trevor looked at him, a wag to his tail.
“You heard the young lady. Grab a spoon and dig in.”
“Okay.”
Once everybody had a spoon, they all sat at the table, enjoying ice cream and laughing away without a care in the world.
//////
“Happy Birthday Gail!!” everybody cheered.
All of Gail's friends were in Ryudo's house celebrating his twentieth birthday. There was a nice vanilla cake with chocolate frosting topped with candles in front of Gail. He took a deep breath before blowing them out as everybody clapped.
“Birthday boy gets the first piece,” Caroline said, cutting a piece off and handing it to Gail who smiled, tail wagging non stop.
“Wow, this is good,” Gail yipped taking a bite.
“I have friends in the pastry business,” Nick said.
Everybody got their piece and dug in with smiles.
“All right, time for the presents. Here you go Gail,” Connors said, handing him a wrapped box.
Gail ripped it opened, seeing a new game system as he barked happily.
“Thanks a lot Connors,” Gail said.
“Enjoy. My dad said he got it for his friend's son but he already had it.”
“My turn,” Stephen said.
He handed him a medium sized box as Gail opened it. Inside were a variety of new shirts that were just his size.
“I'm old fashioned. Sue me,” he said as everybody laughed.
Simon gave him his old bike which he fixed up nicely and sprayed painted it white. Derrick gave him a brand new computer and fixed it up for him in his room. Lastly came Ryudo who smiled and handed him a small jewelry box. Gail opened it to find a gold bracelet with a small silver plate with his name engraved on it. Gail was speechless as he looked at it.
“I...Ryudo....I.....don't know what to say.”
“Well, if you don't want it, I'll bring it back,” Ryudo said reaching for it.
Gail nipped at his hand with a growl before grabbing his face and mashing their lips together. Breaking off, he kept a steady growl in his throat as he whispered in Ryudo's ear huskily.
“Me and you will get no sleep tonight. I promise you that.”
Laughter was heard all around as everybody enjoyed themselves. This is how things should be. It shouldn't matter that you have fur or not. We are all living, breathing creatures that share the same earth. Ryudo's thoughts were broken up by a piece of cake hitting his nose and the laughter of Gail. He grinned, reached over and started tickling him making him give that familiar hyena laugh and squirm to get away. This day was just perfect. The phone rang as Shelley pick it up.
“Ryudo Peterson residents. Yes, hold on please. It's for you master.”
Ryudo looked at Shelley and nodded his head. He headed upstairs to answer it instead of letting whoever on the phone hear the joyous laughter of human and hybrids together.
“This is Ryudo.”
“Hey Ryudo, its Anthony.”
“Hey Dr. Edwards, what can I do for you?”
“Listen, do you think you can come in? I need to speak to you.”
“Sure thing. I'll be there in about ten minutes.”
“Great. I'll be waiting.”
Ryudo hung up and headed back downstairs. He walked to the front door and grabbed his shoes before Derrick spoke up.
“Where you going Ryudo?”
“Anthony needs to see me. I'll be back shortly. Keep the party going,” Ryudo said with a smile before leaving.
Hopping into his car, he headed towards the hospital, tapping his fingers to a beat on the radio. Finding a park, he got out and waved hi to the patients and maintenance people. Walking in, he headed up to Edwards office and knocked on the door.
“Come on in.”
Ryudo walked in and to his surprise, he found the office to be bare and boxes on the floor.
“Are you really leaving me?”
“The hospital is in good hands. It's time for me to move on,” Anthony said, placing one of his certificates inside a box.
“But it won't be the same.”
Edwards chuckled before turning to him.
“You have the best staff here. You have no need for me anymore.”
“I don't know about that. Its nice to have you around for that extra advice.”
“You know more than me sadly. I'm glad and proud to pass this hospital to you.”
Edwards walked over and patted his shoulder.
“You have made me proud Ryudo. Don't let anything or anyone take what you hold dear.”
“Will you at least come visit?”
“Maybe. But I'll keep in contact. You haven't seen or heard the last of me. Care to help me with my boxes?”
“Sure thing.”
They each grabbed some boxes and headed downstairs to his car and loaded them in the trunk. Once the last box was loaded, Anthony got into the front seat as Ryudo walked over to the window. Anthony gave him a smile and stuck his hand out which Ryudo shook.
“Please working with you Dr. Peterson.”
“Same to you Dr. Edwards.”
Anthony looked at Ryudo and gave him one last smile before pulling away. Ryudo watched the car turn down the street and out of sight. Hunt walked up and patted his back.
“I guess it's all you now huh?”
“Yeah. No pressure huh?”
“Relax. You have all of our support. Even though you did fuck up that one time.”
“Don't remind me of that mistake.”
“I'm going to haunt you with that every time you mess up.”
“Joy,” Ryudo said rolling his eyes but chuckling.
Hunt chuckled also before his beeper went off.
“Looks like that surgery is already to go.”
“Did they finally sign off?”
“Yeah.”
“Good. Glad they decided to see things our way.”
Hunt laughed before heading back in. Ryudo watched him go in before looking up at the sky. It was now all on him. He started to feel a little bit lonely now that Edwards was gone. Whenever there was something wrong, he could always turn to Edwards for help. But not that he was gone, he lost that extra advice person when in a tight pinch. But Anthony left him in good hands with doctors that care about what they are doing. And now that he had Derrick working alongside him, he felt happy.
“I better head back and join the last bit of the party.”
He took one last look at 'his' hospital before hopping in his car and heading back home. As he got home, he saw that everybody was pretty much heading home and waving bye to Gail and Shelley. He got out as Gail's tail wag happily.
“Welcome back Ryudo!”
“Sorry for leaving. I had to help with something.”
“It's okay. I had a really great time. Thank you for arranging this.”
Ryudo smiled before tickling his chin and making him murr happily.
“Everybody deserves a birthday party. I'll have you one also Shelley.”
“You don't need to do that,” Shelley blushed.
“Yes I do. You are family Shelley. And families do things right.”
“He's right hun,” Nick said, giving her a hug from behind.
Shelley only nodded, leaning into Nick's embrace as he covered her with his wings. Ryudo walked in and took a seat on the couch, Gail joining him as he cuddled into his chest.
“Did you enjoy your party?”
“The best thing ever. Thank you so much.”
“Anything for my mate,” Ryudo smiled, lifting his chin and kissing him gently.
Gail murred into the kiss, slipping his tongue in as they wrestled together. They broke off softly as Gail buried his muzzle under Ryudo's chin, sighing happily. Looking at the time, it was only six, yet the sun was setting, turning the sky into a beautiful canvas of colors. Shelley was downstairs with Nick, and he could swear he could hear little whines coming from the door.
“What do you say we head upstairs and start the real party?” Ryudo whispered softly into his ear.
“I thought you would never ask,” Gail said with a lustful growl.
///////
The alarm buzzed softly in the room causing the figures in the bed to stir. Kelley reached out from the curtain and stopped the nagging buzzing before retreating back into the warmth of the blanket. A hand caressed his bare chest making him groan.
“Good morning love,” Lilly said softly.
“Good morning honey. Did you sleep well?”
“Always in your arms.”
Kelley smiled before leaning down and kissing that furry muzzle with passion which was returned with the same fire. The alarm buzzed again making them sigh before chuckling.
“You won't get those supporters if you stay with me.”
“Is that a bad thing? You want me out the bed?”
“Silly man,” Lilly chuckled softly. “I would love nothing more then to mate with you all day, but you have more important things to do.”
“Sad but true,” Kelley sighed.
They each heard a soft moan and looked to see Sonya still asleep, holding onto Lilly. They each smiled before Lilly ran her paw softly across her cheek.
“Guess I better get going then. Don't want to keep 'her' waiting. Otherwise she'll be knocking on the door in three, two, one..”
Just as he finished, there was a knock on the door.
“Congressman, are you up sir?”
Kelley rolled his eyes before tossing on the robe and walking to the door, but not before hearing a sexy murr from Lilly.
“Pity I won't be able to see that ass until tonight.”
“Keep talking like that and I'll cancel everything to ravage you.”
“As good as that sounds, you worked to hard to stop now. Get moving love.”
Kelley smiled as he heard the knocking again. He walked to the front and opened the door to see his assistant, April, standing there with a clipboard.
“April, how are you this morning?” he said, turning around and heading into the kitchen where the auto coffee machine had a fresh pot ready for him. He poured a cup before looking at her. “So what can I help you with?”
April looked at him with a seriously look. Kelley chuckled before taking a sip of coffee, pulling a chair out and taking a seat.
“Geez, not a funny bone in you is there?”
“I wish you would take this seriously sir. If you can manage to get the supporters here, the bill will by-pass congress and be signed by the president himself.”
He narrowed his eyes at that before slamming the cup down. April let out a gasp and turned her head.
“Forgive me for saying that sir. I was out of line.”
Kelley looked at her before laughing.
“You should see the look on your face.”
“Sir please,” April squeaked, blushing hard.
“Relax April. I know how important this is. Let me freshen up and we'll hit the road. Does that sound like a plan to you?”
April smiled and nodded. Kelley headed back into the room to see Lilly fell back to sleep, hugging Sonya close to her with a smile. He hopped into the shower, getting nice and clean. Walking out, he added some shaving cream and cleaned his face, making sure his appearance was clean. His suit was waiting for him on the hanger which Lilly picked out. She always knew how to make him look good. Throwing the suit on, he fixed his tie in the mirror and headed for the front door where April was waiting for him. Before he left, he turned around and headed back to the bedroom. Leaning down, he gave both Lilly and Sonya a kiss on the cheek before leaving.
“What's first today April?”
“Breakfast with the chief of police before lunch and golf with the mayor. After that its a visit to the local schools and other dignitaries.”
“Sounds like fun. Let's get this show on the road.”
Heading down the elevator, Trevor was waiting there in his uniform. His tail wagged happily seeing Kelley as he saluted.
“Good morning Kelley. I hope you had a good night's sleep?”
“Indeed. Shall we roll?”
“The jeep is ready and waiting for you.”
“Excellent. Let's get going to our first stop.”
Trevor nodded as they headed to the jeep. Getting in, Trevor started it up and headed for the police station. Kelley had to get his mind in tune. He reached into the briefcase and pulled out his speech notes that April made and looked them over.
“Won't be easy to get the police votes. But I have to give it a try.”
“Do you think you can persuaded the chief?” April asked.
“Won't know until I try. Besides, I do have a way of talking that gets people's attention.”
“True. That's how you got into Congress in the first place,” April grinned.
“Funny girl,” Kelley grinned.
“That's why you hired me.”
Kelley shrugged as Trevor laughed in the driver's seat. They drove for a short while until the police station came into view. Pulling in the driveway, Trevor found a park and got out, opening the door for Kelley and April. People stopped and pointed as Kelley walked to the doors. He walked in as all the officers stood at attention and saluted.
“At ease people. Act like I'm not even here,” Kelley smiled.
The chief of police walked out and greeted Kelley with a smile and a handshake.
“Congressman Kelley, so nice of you to visit our little city.”
“Always a pleasure to visit the local work force who protect our cities and citizens from harm.”
“Well said. Please, this way. Breakfast is waiting for us, brought to us by the good people at Waffle House.”
“Sounds delicious. I can't wait.”
They walked to the cafeteria and entered to see a big buffet of eggs, waffle, pancakes, sausage, and everything else you can think of. Everybody grabbed a plate and helped themselves before taking a seat. Trevor stood by the door before Kelley looked at him.
“Grab yourself a plate Trevor. There's plenty of food.”
“Um...Congressman. That food was prepared for us, not them.”
“Trevor is part of my entourage. So if I eat, so does he.”
“That's okay sir,” Trevor said. “I already ate. Please, enjoy yourself.”
Kelley nodded before turning his attention to the chief.
“Now then chief....”
“Victor.”
“Victor. Shall we get down to business as to why I am here?”
“I already know why you are here, and quite frankly, I'm a little disappointed in you.”
Kelley tilted his head a little at that.
“And why are you disappointed?”
“Because of what you are trying to do. Hybrids are born to be slaves, nothing more, nothing less. If people start seeing them as equals, the world will never be the same.”
Kelley took a bite of the waffles, eyes wide in surprise.
“Wow, these are good. But why can't people see them as equals? Surely if you remember, people had slaves in the past. Remember what happened to Pharaoh when he tried to rule the Israelite? He got swallowed by the Red Sea.”
“So you're saying you are Moses now? Trying to free the hybrids?”
“If you want to put it in that perspective, then, yes I am.”
“So if this bill doesn't get passed, are you going to call down plagues upon the people?” Victor said with a laugh.
Kelley sat there, looking at Victor who was laughing away. Trevor let out a soft whine, ears folded as Kelley looked in his direction. Victor finally calmed down, wiping tears out of his eyes.
“Oh god did I need that. Thanks a ton.”
“Okay then, let me hear your reason for keeping living creatures as slaves?”
“Simple. We beat them in war and now they belong to us to do with as we please.”
“I see. And can you tell me who started this war between the hybrids and humans?”
“They did of course.”
Kelley nodded his head before holding his hand out. April handed him a folder which he opened up and read.
“November eight twenty twenty, the government and hybrids come together in a mutual agreement of peace and establish a working relationship. Each race shares goods and medicine that helps one another out. So where in this report does it say that hybrids started the attack?”
Victor went quiet as he read the report that Kelley gave him.
“There has to be a mistake somewhere. Hybrids attacked us and we defended ourselves. You must've alter this report.”
“Ah yes, let see that report,” he said, grabbing another paper. “November eight twenty twenty, a vicious attack by a bulldog hybrid on a child results in an all out war between the humans and hybrids. Humans came out the victors forcing the hybrids into slavery. Hmm, I wonder why the real report got changed?”
“But.....that's impossible.”
“It pays to has access to information, wouldn't you agree?” Kelley said with a smile, drinking some coffee.
Victor sat there reading both papers. Was this true? Was everything he read in school a lie? No, he wouldn't be fooled by this. But, if this was true, then hybrids really aren't slaves?
“How accurate is this?”
“If you want to place it under a microscope for fraud, be my guess. But I assure you, it is authentic.”
Victor laid both papers down and looked at Kelley who was munching down on the breakfast.
“Suppose this is all true, why did the government cover it up?”
“Because humans are lazy, pathetic creatures. And if the opportunity arrives to make slaves do their dirty work, they take it. Hybrids do like to work, but there is a point that even they feel like they need a rest. They shouldn't have to kill themselves to please us.”
“Be that as it may, its not like the situation is going to change just because the bill gets passed.”
“It's going to take time to adjust, yes. But that's okay. We have all the time in the world. All hybrids want, is for things to go back the way they were. For them to be treated like equals and to enjoy life free from ridicule and unwanted beatings. Is that too much to ask Victor?”
Victor looked at Trevor who was standing guard at the door, ears at attention and tail stiff. He crossed his arms and thought about it. Most hybrids that were on his staff were friendly and always willing to help with anything they could. Never talking back and always had a smile on their faces. The government was always good at lying, but if this was true, then it could shake everybody's world up.
“If we give you our support, will you get this bill passed?”
“I'll try my hardest. You have my word on that.”
Victor closed his eyes and sighed.
“Very well, you have our support.”
Kelley smiled at that before standing up and holding his hand out.
“Thank you Chief Victor. This means so much for us.”
“Just make sure you get that bill passed. Otherwise, my job is on the line for helping you.”
“Thank you for your time. Have a good day chief.”
Trevor walked out first followed by Kelley as he shook hands with the local police and thanked them for their services. Walking out, he got bombarded by cameramen flashing away and yelling questions.
“Congressman Kelley, what do you expect to happen after you get the supporters?”
“Congressman, why are you helping these mongrels?”
“Don't you think you are wasting your time?”
He stopped as microphones and cameras were pointed at him. Taking a deep breath he addressed the crowd of sharks.
“To answer the first question, I expect the bill to be passed so that hybrids and human can live normal lives. Why should hybrids have to be slaves when God gave us two arms and legs to do stuff on our own? I'm helping hybrids because no one else will. To people, hybrids are nothing but walking flea circuses with nothing of value. To be traded and tossed away like garbage. Or beaten down like a wild animal. I thought humans were suppose to be intelligent? But to me, it looks like we are nothing more then bullies.”
He saw them writing and he knew they were mixing his words up with words of their own.
“But I know whatever I'm saying is going to be cut up so you can ridicule me so I don't even know why I'm wasting my time. So you can write whatever you want. I said my piece. Now if you'll excuse me, I have other appointments to attend to.”
They started yelling questions one after the other as the police had to hold them back. Getting into the car, he let out a sigh as he saw them snapping away. Trevor got into the front seat and growled.
“Bunch of savages. And they say we're animals.”
“Relax Trevor. This is how they operate. The minute they see fear, they pounce on you. How was I in there April?”
“You did great sir. I still can't believe you found something like that. Who found that for you?”
“Sorry, can't say. If I did, I would have to cut your tongue out,” Kelley said with a wink.
Trevor started the jeep and backed out, the media still blitzing him with questions. Pulling out, he drove down the street and turned the corner. Kelley adjusted his tie and let out a sigh.
“What's next April?”
“Luncheon with the mayor at the mini golf course.”
“Cool. Maybe I can show him how to put,” Kelley laughed as his phone rang. “Hey there princess, what's up?”
“Hey daddy. Are you coming back to have lunch with us?”
“Sorry honey, I won't be able to. But I will be back for dinner.”
“Okay. Could Trevor join us for lunch then?”
“I don't think Trevor would mind.”
Trevor nodded, hearing everything with his good ears.
“It's settled then. Once Trevor drops me off, he'll come back and pick you and Lilly up to take you out for lunch.”
“Yaaay. Can we have sushi?”
“Of course. Trevor, do you know any good sushi places.”
“Yep. There's a good one not far from the hotel. I can be there in about thirty minutes.”
“Then its settled.”
“Yaaay. Thanks daddy. You're the greatest.”
Kelley hung up and smiled.
“When this is over, how would you like a permanent position?”
Trevor grinned, his tail wagging non stop.
“It would be my pleasure.”
“Great. Let's finish up here and get that bill passed.”
//////
Ginger read through the file, headphones on her ears as she nodded her head to the music. Her lime green eyes studied every sentence before writing a few notes on her notepad.
“Not much to go on here. What does he expect me to do? Preform a miracle?”
The body next to her stirred awake before letting out a yawn.
“Finally up? I guess its true what they say about cats and their catnaps?”
“Very funny,” the lynx said.
“And grouchy. What a nasty combo. I hate to see you in heat.”
The lynx rolled her eyes before taking the folder out of Ginger's hands.
“Is this the new mark?”
“Yep. Ryudo Peterson. Age twenty five and a hybrid doctor.”
“In other words, the big wigs aren't getting their fixed inspections and they want him out?”
“Pretty much.”
“So how's it going down?”
Ginger took a sip of her lemonade before looking out the plane window, moving a little of her orange hair out of her eyes.
“We're going in as reporters and do an exclusive on him and the hospital. Mostly him though.”
“A shame really. We need good doctors to help us.”
Ginger looked at her from the corner of her eye. Sure they got dirt on people that deserved it like lawyers and politicians. But to do this to a doctor was kind of low.
“You're in good health Rose. Why are you so concerned?”
“I'm in good health now, but what about tomorrow or next week? Things can happen in a blink of an eye. You don't have to worry cause you're a human.”
“Let's not do this here please. We got a job to do so lets do it.”
Rose let out a huff before tossing the folder back at Ginger. Ginger let out a sigh as the airport came into view. The plane descended, landing with a soft thud on the runway before pulling to the gate. Ginger popped her sunglasses on and grabbed her carry-on before walking off alongside Rose. In the lobby, a man in a suit held a sign with her name on it. She walked up to him as he smiled.
“Ms. Ginger Grey?”
“That's me love. Are you our ride?”
“That I am. Can I take your bags?”
He grabbed her bag and headed out the airport lobby to the waiting Royal Royce. Opening the door, they got in as he closed it behind them. Jogging to the front, he opened the door and got in.
“Where's our hotel at?”
“You'll be staying at the Charter Hotel compliments of George Hanley. Everything has been paid for so you don't have to worry about a thing.”
“Great. I can't wait to get off my feet.”
They drove to the hotel as Rose looked out the window, ears perked as her eyes took in every sight. She loved traveling to different cities and towns. Ironically, that's how she met Ginger. The large hotel came into view as they pulled to a stop at the curb. The door opened as Rose got out followed by Ginger.
“Not a bad hotel. Hanley did something right for a change.”
Walking in, they went to the front desk where a young lady was working.
“Good morning and welcome to the Charter Hotel. Do you have reservations?”
“Yes. Ginger Grey, party of two.”
The lady typed away before smiling.
“Ah yes miss Grey, there you are. You are in room twenty two ten. Here's your key card. If you need anything, please call,” the lady said with a bow.
“Thanks cutie,” Ginger smiled, taking the card and heading for the elevator.
The elevator door opened as Rose hit twenty two. Cheesy music was played making them cringe inwardly. Arriving on their floor, they walked down the hall to their room. Sliding the card in, they were greeted to a luxury suite with twin beds separated by a small dresser with a lamp. The curtains to the patio were open allowing a great view of the city.
“Nice digs,” Rose said bouncing a little on the bed. “When do we start?”
“As soon as Hanley calls.”
Rose turned on the TV as the news was playing, showing clips of Kelley talking to the public. Ginger looked on crossing her arms.
“Do you think he'll pass the bill this time?” Rose asked.
“Don't know. Most people like slaves. Makes them lazy and fat.”
“I really hope it does get passed. I hate seeing hybrids being treated like dirt everyday.”
“If the bill passes, I'll be all alone,” Ginger said softly. “I really like being with you. We make a great team.”
Rose laughed before sticking her tongue out.
“Of course we do. I would never give this up.”
Ginger smiled before her phone rang.
“Hello Hanley. Thanks for the limo.”
“Glad you liked it. You'll meet with Lincoln at World Metro and he'll give you the rundown of everything.”
“Okay.”
“Also, while you're at it, think you can get something on Kelley also?”
“That'll be extra. I don't like extra work. You barely gave me enough info for this job.”
She could hear Hanley grunt on the other side.
“Understandable. But if you do see an opening, take it.”
“We'll see,” Ginger said before hanging up. “Now he wants dirt on Kelley. Who does he think I am?”
“Anything to keep us down,” Rose growled.
“I told him I'll think about it. No guarantee. But we got a meeting with Lincoln at Metro News. So let's go.”
They walked out the room and headed down the elevator where their ride was waiting. The driver opened the door for them before jogging to the front.
“Where to Ms. Grey?”
“World Metro news.”
The driver nodded and pulled into the street. Rose and Ginger took in the sights of the city through the window. All to soon, they came to a large building with tons of cars parked and security at the gate. After getting waved through by security, the driver headed to the front of the building and parked. They both got out and went through the main doors where a male weasel greeted them.
“Good morning ladies. What can I do for you?”
“We're here to see Lincoln Harris.”
“Certainly. I'll let him know you're here. Please have a seat.”
They took a seat on the comfy chairs, watching the news as they played the sports highlights. They didn't need to wait long as a pudgy dark skinned man walked out and greeted them. He had on a pair of brown slacks with a matching shirt and white tie. His head was bald and was almost shiny enough to see your reflection. The only thing that stood out was his purple eyes.
“Ms. Ginger Grey I presume? I didn't know Hanley was sending me someone as beautiful as you.”
“Why thank you Mr. Harris.”
“So here's the rundown. I'll give you a couple of days to get everything you need about the hospital and what not. Once you do that, write an article and hand it in to me. I'm willing to give Hanley at least a page. I know I'll probably lose a few subscribers but I'm getting paid regardless. Do you have any questions for me?”
“Yeah. Why are your eyes purple?” Rose asked.
Ginger held in a giggle as Lincoln looked at her.
“I have contacts on. My eye color is grey. They got the color mixed up. Any other questions?”
None of the girls spoke up as he nodded.
“Good. If you need anything else, leave a message with Troy over there and I'll get back to you as soon as you can. Good day ladies.”
They watched him leave before Ginger chuckled.
“You always say the weirdest things.”
“What? I only see hybrids with those color eyes. It's an honest question.”
“If you say so. Come on, lets head back to the hotel and come up with a plan.”
///////
“Good morning everybody,” Ryudo said.
“Good morning,” everybody said.
He had all the staff in the cafeteria for a brief info meeting.
“As you all heard, Anthony left us yesterday and now it falls on me to steer the ship. But it's not just me in charge. Everybody has a role that makes this ship stay afloat. I can't do it without every single one of you.”
His eyes looked around the room seeing a few people nod.
“Anthony left this hospital in good hands. Our hands. And I'll be damn if I let his name be tarnished. I made a big mistake awhile ago and I'm glad you have forgiven me for that. I promise to never let anything happen this hospital as long as I'm here.”
People gave a small clap making him chuckle.
“Now that that's out of the way. I like to introduce two new members. Our new pharmacist Blake Johnson and our first hybrid psychiatrist Kurt.”
Everybody clapped and said hello, making them feel welcomed.
“Alright, if nobody has any problems, concerns, or questions, let's make things happen.”
All the staff got up and headed towards their station, chatting and laughing away. Ryudo watched them leave before sighing. Kurt walked up to him and smiled. He had on a nice pair of pants and a shirt that was a tad to tight showing his muscles.
“Thanks for this Ryudo. I didn't think you were serious when you said you might need help.”
“What did Jennifer say about it?”
“She's happy about it. It gets me out the house and some extra income.”
“I bet,” Ryudo chuckled. “Well, you got your own office now. If you need anything, you know where I am.”
Kurt nodded before heading out. Ryudo felt a tap on his shoulder and turned to see Michelle standing there.
“I had my doubts about you, but you turned out okay haven't you?”
“Thanks for the support.”
“No problem. Here you go, have a smoothie. Just made it.”
Ryudo took a sip as his eyes widen.
“Hey, this is good.”
“Chalk full of vitamins and minerals for a growing boy like you.”
“Thanks. You should make this for the patients also.”
“Plan to. Just needed a taste tester.”
“A guinea pig huh? I'm honored. Thanks for the drink.”
Ryudo left the cafeteria, drink in hand and saying hi to his patients and little cubs running around. He went to his office and took a look at the title on the door which read: Ryudo Peterson, Superintendent. Anthony asked if he wanted his office but he declined. He'd keep it open in case Anthony decided to come back which he laughed to. Walking to the window, he took a look outside as the sun was shining brightly in the sky, a few puffs of clouds scattered here and there.
“Such a great day. I wonder what's going to happen?”
“Dr. Peterson,” his speaker crackled.
“Go ahead Jasmine.”
“You're needed in x-ray for a decision.”
“Be right there,” Ryudo said hitting the button. He stood up and grabbed his doctor jacket and took a deep breath. “So begins a new chapter in Ryudo Peterson's life.”
////////
All the hybrids were gathered together in Ryudo's backyard laughing away. Caroline made her delicious lemonade and everybody had a cup. Shelly was laying in Nick's lap, letting out a soft murr as he stroked her back softly. Donna had her head on Jason's shoulder as he held her close. His body healed fast, much to the surprise of Derrick. Instead of months of healing, it took only one. He had a patch over his left eye, but it didn't slow him down one bit. Jevon loved having an extra hand as Jason and Nick worked together like a well oiled machine.
“Days like these are better enjoyed with friends,” Gail said happily on the swing.
“I have to admit. The humans here are so much more lax then I'm use to,” Jason spoke up.
“That's because those big companies don't care about us. All they care about is making money,” Donna replied. “I'm glad Derrick got me. I feel so free and happy instead of crushed and depressed.”
Everybody chuckled at that before taking a drink. Pretty soon, Gail's ears perked up as the front door was being knocked on.
“I wonder who that is?”
He walked around the back through the gate to see a lynx knocking on the door.
“Can I help you?”
“Oh!” the lynx said, jumping a little in surprise. “Is this where Ryudo Peterson lives?”
“Yes it is. Can I help you?”
“I heard he helps hybrids out. My master got mad and chased me out. I asked a few hybrids and they said he helps our kind out.”
Gail looked at her skeptically. She had on old clothes that were torn and had some dirt build up on her fur and arms. She didn't have a collar on which was weird. Cause if she didn't have a collar on, she would've been picked up quickly.
“I'm not allowed to make that decision miss. I'm sorry, but you'll have to leave.”
“Please don't. I have no where to go. If I go back, he'll kill me,” the lynx mewled softly.
“Gail, what's wrong?” Shelley asked, turning the corner.
The lynx looked at Shelley before speaking.
“I heard Ryudo Peterson helps hybrids in need. I need his help. If I go back to my master, he'll kill me.”
Shelley gave a soft smile before walking over and holding her paws.
“I'm sure my master will be glad to help you. Come sit in the back with us. Would you like something to drink?”
“Yes please. If it's not to much trouble,” the lynx said walking towards the back with Shelley.
Gail watched them, still skeptical of the lynx. He sat on the swing as Shelley handed her a glass of lemonade which she drank eagerly.
“Wow, that was good. Thank you.”
“Not a problem. Now, what's your name?”
“It's Rose.”
“Well Rose, what brought you way out here?” Caroline asked.
Rose looked down, ears folded.
“I...lived with an abusive master. He would always yell and scream which didn't bother me. But one day, he came home drunk from a party. I could smell the alcohol coming off him. He started yelling, more loudly then before. Then, he...hit me.”
Rose started sniffling and held her shoulders, shivering from the memory.
“He kept hitting me, saying I cost him the money pool at work. I never felt so much pain in my life. He finally fell asleep and I left in the middle of the night. I had no idea where to go, until I heard about a person who helps hybrids. It took a while to get here as you can see with the dirt on me.”
“How come you didn't get picked up by the police for not having a collar?” Gail asked.
“I know how to stay hidden. You learn quickly when you're by yourself.”
“I'm so sorry to hear that, you poor thing,” Caroline said. “Well you have nothing to worry about. Ryudo is a very kind human. I'm sure he'll be able to help you.”
“But you probably want to get cleaned up and looking better. Come, I'll take you inside and fix you up a nice bath and some food in your stomach,” Shelly said getting up.
“Thank you so much,” Rose said, walking into the house with Shelly.
Gail looked as they walked away, his tail twitching side to side. Donna looked at him, tilting her head to the side.
“What's wrong Gail?”
“I don't trust her. Something about her seems........off.”
“You're being paranoid Gail. Lots of hybrids run from abusive masters.”
“But why come here though? And how did she know where Ryudo lives?”
They all looked at each other before shrugging.
“You may have a point Gail. But don't let paranoia rule you. She may be smart and can use computers to find Ryudo's home. You have to give her the benefit of the doubt. In the meantime, we have to get going. Our master should be ready to get back to work,” Nick said standing up.
Jason stood up as well, giving his sister a lick on the cheek making her giggle before heading off with Nick. Caroline gave a stretch before standing also.
“I'm going to head back too. Donna, you wanna join me?”
“Sure. Take care Gail,” Donna said, tickling his chin making him murr.
He watched them leave before looking at the house. With a sigh, he got up and headed inside. The smell of lavender filled his nose as he heard the shower going. He let out a huff before sitting on the couch and starting up his new game system. The shower got turned off and the sound of footsteps were heard coming down the stairs. Gail looked and saw Rose with a towel wrapped around her body.
“Thank you so much for this. I really hope this is okay?” Rose said.
“Don't worry. Our master is a lot more reasonable then other humans. I'm sure he'll let you stay for a bit. I think some of my clothes should fit you. Let's go and try some out,” Shelly smiled, leading her downstairs.
Rose gave a nod, disappearing down into the room as Gail shook his head. Maybe he was being a little paranoid. But there was still something about her that rubbed him the wrong way. He turned his attention back to the game, smile on his face as he played. His attention was broken by the couch shifting and Rose was sitting next to him. The smell of his mom's lavender body wash was actually pretty good on her. She smiled at him which made him blush a little.
“What is that your playing?”
“A video game my friend gave me for my birthday.”
“Wow. I wish I got stuff like that. I'm kind of jealous.”
Gail nodded his head as Shelly went into the kitchen to make something to eat. She was getting some tips on cooking from Caroline and it was fun. Soon the smell of grilled cheese reach their noses as Shelley came back into the room with a plate full of sandwiches. Rose took a bite into one before devouring it making Shelley giggle.
“Oh wow this is good.”
“Glad you like it. Eat as much as you want.”
She had her full after about four and sat back on the couch rubbing her stomach.
“Best thing I had to eat in awhile. When will you master get home?”
“He's at work, so he'll won't be here until around six or so,” Gail said, eyes focused on the screen.
Rose looked at Gail, head tilted in confusion.
“Have I done something to offend you?”
“Don't mind Gail. He's just very cautious,” Shelley said.
“Well, I hope we can become friends.”
Gail looked at her from the corner of his eye.
“We'll see,” he said, standing up and turning off the game system. “I'm going upstairs to read.”
They watched him leave before looking at each other.
“I hope I didn't offend him,” Rose said, ears down.
“He'll get over it.”
“I hope so. I need to run to the bathroom real quick,” Rose said.
She got up and went to the bathroom. Once inside, she locked the door before sitting on the toilet seat. She tapped her ear before speaking softly.
“Ginger, can you hear me?”
“I can hear you. How did it go?”
“I got accepted into the mark's house. But there might be some trouble.”
“How so?”
“One of the hybrids doesn't trust me. He might cause a problem.”
Ginger chuckled before speaking.
“Use that body of yours Rose. I sure the person in question will leave you alone after a quick lay in the bed.”
Rose growled at that.
“Look, just do what you can without causing alarm. I'll go and speak to the mark now.”
“Will do.”
///////
Trevor pulled to a stop at the hotel entrance and got out. Lilly and Sonya were there at the entrance waiting for him as he smiled.
“Ladies, your chariot await,” Trevor said with a bow, opening the back door.
Lilly giggled at that before getting in, buckling Sonya up.
“Are we going to have sushi Trevor?” Sonya asked happily.
“Of course we are. I know just the place. Are we all set Lilly?”
“Yep. Let's go.”
Trevor took off down the street, music playing on the speakers as Sonya moved to the beat. He took a look through the rear view mirror and smiled.
“So Trevor, how old you if I may ask?” Lilly spoke up.
“I'll be twenty six in a few months. My mate, Bethany, is twenty eight.”
“What kind of hybrid is your mate?”
“She's an Afghan hound. Beautiful brown fur and orange eyes. We met at a farm where we were both bought by the same owner. It was great to be able to speak to her on our breaks or when our master was away. One thing lead to another and we got together.”
“How sweet,” Lilly chuckled.
Trevor gave a smile before coming to a stop near a small diner. He got out and opened the door for them as they looked around.
“This place is called International cause it serves food from all over the world. It attracts many people and hybrid alike.”
They walked in as the place was full with a mix of hybrids and humans laughing and talking. Chow-chow waitresses were bringing trays of food to each table and bowing.
“Welcome to International,” a female poodle said with a bow. “How many today?”
“Three,” Trevor said.
“Certainly. Right this way.”
She lead them to a table near the window as they took their seats. Handing them each a menu, they scrolled through it, looking at the variety of food.
“What do you want hon?” Lilly asked Sonya.
“I want the traditional sushi roll with wasabi, chopsticks, and some fruit punch,” Sonya said happily.
“I'll have the Shepard's pie and ice tea,” Lilly spoke up.
“Just a simple double cheeseburger for me with a coke,” Trevor said.
“Coming right up,” the poodle said, taking their menus and walking off.
Trevor looked at Sonya who was smiling away while hugging Lilly's arm.
“She's really attached to you isn't she?”
“Yes. Every since her mother died, I've been the only mother figure she had.”
“What happened to her mother, if you don't mind me asking?”
Lilly went quiet before looking at Trevor.
“She......died of cancer when Sonya was six.”
“I'm sorry to bring that up,” Trevor said with a whine.
“Its okay,” Sonya said with a smile. “I got a new mommy now who's fluffy and cuddly.”
They both laughed at that as their food was brought out. Sonya clapped happily before taking the chopsticks and digging into the rolls. Trevor looked with curiosity, never seen people use them.
“How do you eat with those?” he asked.
“Its easy. You just hold it like this, and eat. Here, you try.”
Sonya handed Trevor the sticks as he held them in his paws. Try as he might, he couldn't do it properly as the girls laughed heartily. He handed them back with a blush and ears half folded.
“Do you have that special hybrid in your life Lilly?”
Lilly stopped eating before letting out a sigh. She looked at him before down at the plate of food.
“I.....love Kelley,” she said softly enough so people wouldn't hear her.
“I......see,” Trevor said.
They continued eating in silence listening to the chatter of the patrons in the restaurant.
“Do you think that's......wrong?” Lilly asked softly.
Trevor wiped his muzzle before reaching over and softly patting her paw making her shiver a little.
“As long as you both bring each other happiness, that's all that really matters in the end.”
“Thanks,” Lilly said with a smile.
Trevor smiled before looking at his watch, noticing the time.
“We better get you back princess. Don't want to keep you out for too long.”
“Can we go for a walk in the park first? Please? I saw a nice park not far from here.”
“I guess a nice walk would do us good. I'm sure you father won't mind,” Lilly added.
Sonya cheered at that as the waitress cleared the table. Getting up, they walked to the front where the poodle was waiting. She smiled as she saw them walk up.
“Was everything to your liking?”
“It was great,” Sonya said with a smile.
“Well I'm happy to hear that. We already know you are Congressman Kelley's hybrid so everything has been paid for already. Thank you for choosing International and have a great day.”
They walked out to the bright sun shining in the sky as they were all smiles. Getting in the car, they made their way to the park, seeing a lot of kids playing on the swings or sliding down the twisting slide. A park trail lead through them to a nice flower field with lots of butterflies floating around. Sonya giggled as she sat in the flower field, letting the butterflies land on her nose. Lilly smiled before joining her, Sonya placing a flower in her ear.
“Now you look even prettier.”
“So do you sweetie,” Lilly giggled, putting one in her ear.
Trevor smiled at the scene before his ears perked. Something wasn't right and his senses were screaming at him. His eyes scanned the background. Parents were laughing with their children or loved one. Hybrids were talking amongst each other and joggers were taking a drink at the fountain. But soon, his eyes caught sight of four individuals that didn't fit the bill. They were all wearing the same things, black slacks with a white shirt and sunglasses. He knelt down by Lilly who was smiling away with Sonya, keeping his eyes on them as they seem to separate to try and box them in.
“Lilly, we have to go.”
“What!? Why?”
“We have company. We have to go, now.”
“Okay,” Lilly said, a little panic in her voice. “Come on hun, we have to go now.”
“Okay,” Sonya said.
They got up and headed back to the car, Trevor keeping tabs on them all the way. Getting to the car, they hopped in and drove off. Trevor looked at the mirror, noticing a white van following them.
“Trevor, what's wrong?” Lilly asked.
“We're being followed.”
“Do you know by who?”
“Probably people who don't want the bill to pass.”
The white van caught up with them before ramming the back making Trevor yelp then growl as he gained control of the car.
“Hold on tight to Sonya and keep your head down.”
He mashed on the gas bursting ahead as the sounds of honking horns were heard. He swerved left and right avoiding traffic before getting rear ended again.
“God damn assholes,” he snarled.
He took a sharp turn to the left and almost spun out as he gained control. The white van behind them couldn't make the sharp turn as it crashed into a parked car. Trevor looked in the mirror, happy to see the accident as he let out a sigh of relief.
“I think we're in the clear. Are you girls okay?”
“We're both shaken up but otherwise okay,” Lilly said.
“Let's get you both home. I think we had enough excitement for one day.”
Trevor took a turn down a residential street, keeping his eyes on the surroundings. The neighborhood he was in was nice if he remembered correctly. The road he was on had a steep hill on the right with a river running through it which made it a perfect spot for fishing. He made a stop at a three way stop sign before moving on. The next thing happened so fast that he wasn't even prepared. The truck impacted the jeep hard on the driver's side sending it flipping over and over down the hill before coming to a rest on its side near the water's edge. The truck door's open as three people walked to the edge.
“You better not have killed the girl. We still need her.”
“Kids are a lot tougher then you think.”
“Ha. You see how many times they flipped? You were suppose to push the car over the edge, not bulldoze it.”
“Shut up both of you. Clarence, go check and see if the girl is still alive.”
“What about the mutts?”
“Put them to sleep.”
Clarence nodded before making his way down the steep hill, watching his step. Trevor let out a whine as his senses came back slowly.
“L....Lilly? Sonya? Are you okay?”
He got no answer making him panic. He undid the belt, whining in pain as he feel something was broken, bruised, or both. Looking back, he saw Sonya and Lilly not moving.
“No no no no,” Trevor whined. “Sonya? Cutie can you hear me?”
Sonya let out a soft cry before opening her eyes.
“Trevor? What happened?”
“I'll explain later. Can you move?”
“I.....think so. Lilly, are you okay?”
Lilly didn't respond making Sonya's eye well with tears. Trevor reached over and felt her neck, feeling a pulse making him breath a sigh of relief.
“She's okay cutie,” he said before his ears picked up the sound of someone approaching. “Stay here. I'll be right back.”
He got out the jeep through the front windshield and hid behind the vehicle just as Clarence rounded the corner. He waited for the right moment before pouncing on him, arms underneath his neck before twisting quickly hearing the snap.
“CLARENCE? HEY CLARENCE?”
Police sirens could be heard in the background making both men suck their teeth.
“Come on, let's go.”
“What do we tell him?”
“I'll think of something. Let's get out of here.”
Trevor's ears picked up the sound of tires burning rubber before he turned his attention to his charges. Rushing in, he undid the seat belts of both Lilly and Sonya. Sonya hugged him which he returned.
“I'm glad you're okay cutie. Let's help Lilly and we'll get out of here.”
He helped Lilly out the jeep carefully, not sure if she has anything broken or not. Picking her up, he looked at Sonya who had a little blood on her lip and left eyebrow.
“Can you walk hun?”
“Uh huh.”
“Good. Come on, we have to get help for Lilly.”

Kelley watched the old man line up his shot on the green.
“So let me get this straight congressman. You want me and my supporters to help you pass a bill so that hybrids can have equal rights?”
“That is correct mayor.”
The mayor let out a soft chuckle before standing up and setting up his shot. With a soft tap of the golf club, the ball rolled on the green before settling into the cup.
“Nice putt mayor,” Kelley said.
“Thank you. But why should hybrids be able to be free? They should've thought about that before doing what they did.”
“I've done my history mayor. Maybe you should look at all the facts before passing judgment.”
Kelley walked up to where his ball was positioned and knelt, aligning his shot up with the cup. April walked over and handed the mayor a folder. He opened it and read the contents as Kelley took aim. He tapped the ball gently, watching it roll down the small slope before rolling in and out of the cup making him grunt.
“How accurate is this congressman?”
“Very accurate mayor. You can check it for fraud if you want.”
“But this can't be right.”
“Why can't it? Have you once in your life seen a hybrid attack anybody?”
The mayor was quiet. Kelley was right. Hybrids never did attack people. They even went so far as to put their life on the line to help sometimes. But if what he was reading was indeed the truth, why would the government hide this?
“I can see from your face that you don't want to believe what you are reading. Trust me, it took a lot of digging to find that. People were fired or put in jail. So trust me when I say, it's one hundred percent authentic.”
Kelley tapped the ball into the cup before grabbing it out. He turned to see the mayor sitting on the golf cart rubbing his chin. Kelley walked up and joined him as April started to drive. The ride was quiet as other golfers were teeing up and getting ready to play.
“I really don't want to believe this. This will change everything if the press got a hold of this. They would eat the government alive.”
“Which is why I don't go public. I know people in power will loss their jobs and face scrutiny. I just want things to go back to the way they were, humans and hybrids living in peace.”
April pulled to a stop near the golf entrance as they walked into the changing room. After a quick wash off, they got dressed and headed to the bar for a few drinks and something to snack on. The mayor looked at the papers again as Kelley crossed his legs, munching down some french fries.
“I still don't understand why you're so adamant about helping these things. Aren't there better things to worry about?”
“What's more important than being free? Moses freed the Israelites. Lincoln freed the slaves. Why can't hybrids experience a taste of that freedom again? Who gave us the right to enslave anybody?”
The mayor spun his glass on the table, head swimming in thought. He wanted to help, but the riots that would happen if the bill passed would be crazy. He would lose the majority vote come next election. Taking a quick swig of his drink, he blew out a heavy sigh.
“I have to think on this Kelley.”
“What's to think about if I may ask?”
“Everything. All the fights that will break out. Blood will be shed and lots of it. Mostly hybrids. Not to mention all the jobs that will be lost cause hybrids will be free.”
“People will just have to adjust. I know lazy and rich people will be mad that they aren't going to have hybrids to push around anymore. But they'll just have to deal with it.”
“Plus there's the next election I'm trying to win. I have this city flourishing and would like to keep it that way.”
Kelley chuckled before sipping his drink down.
“Okay. Put yourself in the paws of a hybrid so to say. Wouldn't you like to wake up and not worry about when you are going to get beaten by brushing a human who's walking past you? Not dread the day you'll get separated from your family at a farm? I've been to some of the farms and I'm pretty disgusted at what I seen. The only good farm is Davenport.”
Kelley was right about those things. He seen hybrids beaten for merely looking at a person the wrong way. Little cubs crying as their family member were taken away from them one by one. He looked up at Kelley's sky blue eyes, fingers drumming on the table. After a few minutes of silence, he leaned over and held out his hand. Kelley smiled before reaching over and shaking it.
“If you don't get this bill passed, I'll be knocking on your door for a place to live.”
“Hahaha, then I'll welcome you in with open arms. I promise you, this will work. People just need to realize that slavery days are over. This is the land of the free if I remember correctly.”
“I don't think it applies to them,” the mayor said as a man came over and whispered in his ear. “Looks like I'm needed elsewhere. A pleasure golfing with you congressman.”
“Likewise Jerry.”
Jerry smiled before getting up, his bodyguards following him out. Kelley blew a sigh of relief as April walked over.
“You did it sir! I can't believe it.”
“I know. Just a couple more and I've done it,” he said with a smile looking at his phone. “I wonder why Sonya hasn't called me?”
He hit the dial button as it rang before going to voice mail. He dialed several more times, worry starting to cross his face.
“What's wrong sir?”
“Sonya's not picking up. She always picks up at the first ring.”
“Maybe she's playing with Lilly?”
“Even still, she would answer. Come on. I'm worried about them.”
//////
Trevor walked through the small forest trail by the river. He had Lilly on his back with a large stick under her for better leverage. Her labored breathing and pained whines made him whine also.
“Is Lilly okay Trevor?” Sonya asked sadly.
“I don't know cutie. But we'll get help for her.”
He kept close to the forest in case they were still being followed. He had to get help soon though. Lilly's injuries could be severe, life ending even. The only thing that he hated was the fact that nobody would help her cause she's a hybrid.
“I'm tired Trevor,” Sonya said softly.
“I know cutie. We'll be safe soon, I promise. Just be strong for me and Lilly.”
“Okay.”
They walked a little farther until even he was getting fatigue. He looked around and found a large tree. Walking over, he laid Lilly down gently before sighing. Turning to Sonya, he went to one knee and smiled.
“I'm going to see if I can get some help. Sonya, can you be a brave girl and watch over Lilly for me?”
“Okay.”
She gave him a tight hug which he returned. Breaking off, he gave her a quick lick on the cheek making her giggle before getting up and leaving. He didn't want to leave, but he had no choice. Lilly had to get medical help and soon. Walking up the hill, he took a look back to see Sonya curled up into Lilly's lap. He reached the top and looked around, trying to find anybody that could help. He walked up to the nearest house and knocked timidly. The door opened as a man looked at him, phone in hand.
“What the hell do you want mutt?”
“Please sir. My friend's been in a bad accident and needs help,” Trevor said, tail between his legs and ears folded.
“So what? Fuck off and get off my property mutt,” the man snorted before slamming the door.
Trevor let out a growl before trying another door which ended up with the same result. Door after door he tried with little to no luck. His ears wilted as he whined, a tear appearing in his eye.
“Something wrong friend?”
His ears perked at that and turned to see a young man with a cheetah hybrid next to him.
“My friend's been in an accident and I'm trying to get help for her, but people won't help a hybrid.”
“I'll help you. Where's she at?”
“You will?” Trevor asked surprised, ears perked.
“Of course. Let's go.”
Trevor smiled and nodded, leading them to Lilly and Sonya. Sonya heard the footsteps approaching and hugged Lilly tighter, scared she was going to leave her. Trevor appeared with a smile as she got up and hugged him.
“You're back,” she said happily.
“Yep. And I brought with me.”
The man bent down and looked at Lilly before frowning.
“She's unconscious that's for sure. Sadly I didn't pass the hybrid exams so I'm not a doctor. But I do know someone that is and can help her. Bring her back to my house. It's not far.”
“Okay,” Trevor nodded, lifting Lilly carefully onto his back with a little help from the cheetah.
Both him and Sonya followed them both back to their house.
“Bring her to my room and lay her on the bed.”
He nodded as he laid her gently on the the bed. Looking at her, he felt anger build up. He was suppose to protect them and he failed. The man walked in and patted his shoulder.
“Who is she?”
“Congressman Kelley's hybrid.”
“Wow. The guy fighting for equal rights for hybrids? What happened?”
“Somebody tried to kill us,” Trevor growled angrily, hackles raised.
“Why?”
“Probably to stop the bill from passing. I don't know. But I failed in trying to keep them safe.”
The man looked at him before rubbing his shoulder.
“You didn't fail. They are still alive. You did your job. Come on, I'll get you and the little one something to drink.”
Trevor nodded, taking one last look at Lilly before heading out. Sonya was in the front giggling as the cheetah tickled her playfully. Trevor took a seat on the sofa and blew a sigh of relief. He didn't even realize how dirty his clothes were before sitting down.
“Sorry about the dirt on your furniture sir?”
“Don't worry about it,” the man said walking in with two glasses of fruit punch. “Here you go.”
“Thanks. I didn't get your name. My name is Trevor and that is Sonya, the congressman's daughter.”
“I'm Connors. And that polka dot menace is Hosea.”
“Up yours,” Hosea said sticking his tongue out.
Trevor smiled before remembering he had to let Kelley know what happened.
“Cutie, do you have your phone? We should call your dad and let him know what happened.”
Sonya nodded before reaching in her pocket and pulling out her phone. She opened it to find the screen cracked and broken.
“I think it's broken.”
“Dammit. And I don't have his number. He's probably worried sick.”
“Its okay. Let me call my friend to get her some help.”
///////
Ryudo sat at his desk, head down as he worked on the paperwork in front of him. It's been a busy day and he hasn't even had lunch yet as his stomach growled angrily.
“God I'm starving. I wonder if Michelle has those turkey burgers today?”
He was about to get up when a knock on the door was heard.
“Come in.”
A lady walked in with a small notebook and a purse. She had on a nice pair of jeans and a buttoned up shirt.
“Ryudo Peterson?” she asked.
“Yes, that's me. Can I help you?”
“Yes. My name is Ginger Grey. I'm a reporter with World Metro news. I'm sure you heard of them?”
“Yes I have. Why are you here miss Grey?”
Ginger smiled before taking a seat, notebook out along with a recorder.
“We would like to do an exclusive on you and the hospital.”
Ryudo raised an eyebrow at that. Why would the newspaper want to do an article about him?
“I promise not to take up too much of your time. Just a few questions.”
“Very well. But be brief. I haven't had lunch yet.”
“Thanks so much. Okay, let's get started,” she said hitting the record button. “My name is Ginger Grey and I'm here today with Ryudo Peterson, superintendent of the Express Scripts Hybrid Hospital.”
“How do you do?”
“Very well thanks. First question we have for you is why did you choose this field of work?”
Ryudo crossed his arms before speaking up.
“I choose this field of work because somebody has to help the less fortune. I hate to see hybrids on the street looking weak, malnourished, and unhappy. We are suppose to be the superior race, but all I'm seeing are a bunch of bullies picking on those weaker than them.”
“But didn't we win the war against them? Why shouldn't we have control of them?”
“That so called war was bullshit. Humans are lazy, fat, pathetic slobs who need somebody lower then them to make them feel better about themselves.”
Ginger looked at him before writing somethings down. Was he really serious about this?
“According to my sources, your family owns a multi billion dollar company. Why didn't you want to join in that? Surely you can make more money then doing this?”
“It isn't about the money miss Grey. It's about doing something right. I spent years studying my ass off to be here and I wouldn't change it just to be behind a desk and answering phone calls. I want to help hybrids live the best life they can have.”
“Do all your staff feel the same way?”
“Some don't. When I first started, Dr. Edwards said they are here cause they want to be. Others are here cause its a job and they will do it to the best of their ability. But their attitude has changed, and now they want the same thing I do.”
Ginger wrote some more things down. She figured she broke the tension well enough. Now to get down to the good stuff.
“Is it true that you feel in love with a hybrid years ago?”
Ryudo narrowed his eyes at that as Ginger looked at him.
“I don't believe that's relevant miss Grey.”
“Why not? Its a simple yes or no question Dr. Peterson. Did you fall in love with a hybrid?”
“This little interview is over. I bid you good day miss Grey,” Ryudo said getting up.
“Why is it so hard to answer a simple question? Are you ashamed? Were the rumors true? Was the hybrid a male or female?”
Ryudo balled his fists before closing his eyes and taking a calming breath. It was then a thought crossed his mind.
“Miss Grey? With all due respect, why are you really here? Normally, I would've been informed ahead of time of something like this.”
“Did you have sex with a hybrid?”
Ryudo chuckled before shaking his head as his phone rang.
“This interview is over miss Grey. Good try though. Hello, Dr. Peterson speaking. Hey Connors. What!? Seriously? Okay, I'm on my way. Don't move her anymore then you have already.”
He grabbed his jacket and headed for the door.
“The public has a right to know Dr. Peterson. No respectable slave owner will bring their hybrid to this hospital once they know the boss is a hybrid fucker.”
“Have a good day miss Grey. Excuse me if I don't see you out,” Ryudo said, leaving her in his office.
Ginger let out a huff before turning off the recorder.
“He's hiding something. I can tell from his voice. Hopefully Rose is doing a better job then me.”
She reached up and turned off the recorder before noticing a picture on the desk. Lifting up the frame, she saw him amongst other hybrids and humans. They look like they were having a picnic. Smiles were on their faces as they enjoyed the food. She looked closer and saw Ryudo next to a hyena hybrid. The hyena was giving his cheek a kiss which caused her to smile.
“Bingo. Rose, can you hear me?”
“Yes. What is it?”
“I think I know how to get the mark. Is there a hyena hybrid living there?”
“There are two here. What about it?”
“I think he's in love with one of them.”
“Well it can't be the female. She's head over heels for this weird wolf with wings. Although he is kind of cute. So our mark is gay huh?”
“Looks like it. If you can, see if you can get them together in a nice pose for the front page. That way we'll have our leverage.”
“I'll try. Need to go, somebody's coming.”
Rose tapped her ear before smiling.
“Well Dr. Peterson, looks like we got you dead to rights.”
///////
The man drummed his fingers on the table, looking at the two jackasses on the screen.
“So you're telling me that you failed in getting the congressman's daughter?”
“The police showed up and the hill was too steep to try anything.”
“Excuses. Do you realize if that bill is passed I'll lose everything?”
“We understand sir. We'll try everything to get her for you.”
“You better. Otherwise I wouldn't come back here if I were you.”
The two men stood there at the desk as the connection from the screen ended.
“What do we do now Paul? We have no clue on where they went and the police will have the car in the compound by now.”
Paul ran a hand through his blonde hair, ideas running through his head. There had to be someway to track down the kid. But how?
“Shall we call in some extra hands?”
“And split the money with them? Not a chance. We'll go back to the scene and see if we can track their trails. They couldn't have gotten far, not with that crash,” Paul said standing up from the desk.
“Maybe they got help from somebody?”
“Who's going to help a couple of mutts? Be serious. They can't go to a hospital either. They're probably hiding somewhere near the river banks.”
“And if they aren't?”
Paul stopped at the door and looked back at his partner.
“Then we're screwed. Now come on.”
//////
Ryudo pulled up to Connor's house with a screech of his tires. Killing the engine, he hopped out and rushed to the door. Hosea opened it and smiled.
“Well, that didn't take you long at all Ryudo. Were you just down the street or you couldn't wait to take this cheetah for a spin?”
“I wish,” Ryudo chuckled. “Where's she at?”
“In the bedroom. Come on.”
Ryudo followed Hosea inside and saw a shepard and little girl in the living room. The shepard's ears perked up as his eyes followed Ryudo. When he reached Connor's bedroom door where Lilly was, he sprang up quickly and pinned Ryudo to the wall, his arm on his neck as he bared his teeth angrily.
“Who are you and where do you think you're going?”
“Whoa whoa Trevor, easy. This is my friend that I told you about,” Connor said walking out the bathroom.
Trevor let out a whine before backing off quickly, tail tucked underneath his legs and ears folded.
“Please forgive me sir. I didn't know.”
Ryudo smiled before walking up to him. Trevor closed his eyes, expecting a hit. When he got a hug, he jumped from the contact.
“Relax friend. You are only doing your job.”
Trevor's tail wagged happily as Ryudo broke off.
“Let's go see to your friend.”
He walked in and saw Lilly on the bed. He walked closer and felt her neck, feeling her pulse which was getting weak. Using a pen light, he opened her eyes and did a quick scan before frowning.
“Was she in an accident?”
“Yeah. Somebody rammed us and we rolled down the hill pretty bad,” Trevor replied.
“From just looking at her, she might have a serious head injury. Her pupils are small and her breathing is ragged. Plus her pulse is getting weaker. We need to get her to the hospital fast without moving her as much as you did.”
He pulled out his phone and dialed a number.
“Gary. We got a code nine. I need a bus at two one seven Linden Dr stat. Bring a head and neck restraint.”
“Is she going to be okay?” Sonya asked.
Ryudo turned to look at her before going to one knee and smiling.
“I will do everything in my power to make sure she gets the best care.”
Sonya smiled before hugging him which caught him by surprise, but he hugged back. It didn't take long for the ambulance to get there as they pulled into the driveway. They secured Lilly and brought her into the bus.
“Have the x-ray room ready for an immediate cat scan for possible brain and neck injury.”
“Got you Ryudo,” Gary said, closing the ambulance door and rushing off.
They watched it leave before Ryudo hopped into his car. Trevor rushed over to the drivers side as he looked him.
“Let us go. She was suppose to be under my protection and I failed her. She's also the only mother figure in Sonya's life.”
Ryudo smiled before nodding his head to the passenger side. Trevor smiled before helping Sonya into the back seat. Getting into the passenger side, Ryudo took off down the street.
“So what's your story friend?”
Trevor looked at Ryudo before back to the street.
“I'm just a simple security guard. Nothing special about me.”
“Everybody's special,” Ryudo replied. “Most people just don't care to ask.”
“Well,” Trevor said, rubbing his muzzle. “My name's Trevor and I'm twenty five years old. My mate Bethany is twenty nine and we're expecting our first cub soon.”
“Congrats.”
“Thanks. I got into security cause us shepherds are good guard dogs so to speak. Protecting congressman Kelley's family was my first detail and I feel like I failed.”
Ryudo stopped at a light and looked at Trevor who folded his ears lightly. He reached over and patted his shoulders reassuringly.
“Nobody is prefect Trevor. But you didn't fail cause they are both still alive. Stop beating yourself up.”
“Your friend Connor said the same thing,” Trevor chuckled.
“How old you Sonya?” Ryudo asked.
“I'm nine. My birthday is on New Years,” Sonya said happily.
“Wow. That's really special. When we get the hospital, we'll get you both cleaned up and checked out.”
They drove for a few more minutes until the hospital came into view. He pulled to a stop in his spot as they both got out. Walking in, he went straight towards the ER as the nurses waved to him.
“How is she?” Ryudo asked.
“They have her in the x-ray room as we speak. Dr. Thomas is there.”
“Okay. Take these two and get them looked at. They had a bad accident and I want to make sure everything is working properly.”
“Yes Dr. Peterson.”
“Follow the nurse and she'll get you taken care of. I'll head down and check on your friend.”
Trevor and Sonya nodded as they followed the nurse to a room. Ryudo watched them before heading towards the x-ray room. He walked into the observing room to see Derrick looking at the video screen shaking his head.
“What's the word D?”
“Severe head trauma and swelling. Going to need to operate to lower the pressure before she dies. She might even die before we get her to the table.”
“Not going to happen. Get the OR ready and have Hunt there. He's the best we have.”
“Right,” Derrick said getting on the phone.
///////
Kelley made it back to the hotel and rushed up to his room. Opening the door, he didn't see anybody there. His heart started to beat faster. What could've happened to them? He called downstairs to the front desk, fingers combing through his hair.
“Yes sir mister congressman, what can I do for you?”
“Have Trevor, Lilly, and my daughter make it back yet?”
“No sir. We haven't seen them since they left about an hour ago.”
“Okay. Thank you,” Kelley said hanging up.
Now was the time to panic. Something bad could've happened to them and he had no way to contact them. He got up and paced the floor, trying to figure out someway to get in contact with them. April turned on the TV as the news was playing the car crash.
“Sir?”
“Not now April.”
“But sir?”
“Not now.”
“Sir, you need to see this.”
Kelley turned around, anger in his eyes before they opened wide. He grabbed the remote and turned the volume up.
“....no bodies were found at the scene. The jeep, registered to congressman Kelley, was pulled from the bottom of the hill. Police are searching for the passengers in the car, one of them being the congressman's daughter Sonya. We will have up to date info as we get it.”
April turned to see Kelley fly out the room. She followed him as he took the stairs down three at a time. He skidded to a halt in the lobby, breathing hard. Reaching the revolving doors, he got into a taxi.
“Do you know where that accident happened that was on the news?”
“Yeah, what about it?”
“I need to get there fast.”
“Sure thing.”
The driver put the car in gear and sped off just as April came out the door. Kelley's mind was in a state of panic. What happened to cause that? Did somebody kidnap them? If so, what could they want?
“So you're the guy trying to free the mongrels huh? I don't see why you would want to. They started something they couldn't finish and are paying the penalty.”
The driver looked in the mirror to see Kelley was on the verge of a breakdown.
“You okay?”
“No, I'm not. Just drive.”
They arrived at the scene as police had the tape barrier up. He paid the driver and hurried out before getting stopped.
“We can't allow you past here sir.”
“This is my family you're talking about.”
“Let him through,” Victor said walking up.
The officer saluted before moving the tape up as Kelley ducked underneath it. He walked up to Victor who had a pad in his hand.
“What happened? Any word of my family?”
“Sorry Kelley. We got nothing. All we know is that the car got hit hard on the driver's side causing it to roll at least eight times before coming to stop on its side.”
“Do you think they were kidnapped?”
“We won't know until the bloodhound units come back.”
Kelley watched as they lifted the wreck onto a tow truck flat bed. It was a mess. The driver side door was completely pushed inside. The windows were all shattered except the front which was missing. The wheels were bent and the engine was leaking. Tears came into his eye thinking that his family could be seriously injured or dead even. Victor looked at him before patting his shoulder.
“Have faith Kelley. Don't let your thoughts wonder into the negative.”
“Easy for you to say. That wasn't your family in that car.”
Victor was about to respond when two bloodhounds returned. He looked at them as they saluted.
“Well?”
“We followed their trail to a pedestrian's house. After that, we lost it.”
“Was there anybody home?”
“No sir.”
“Where was it?” Kelley asked.
“Two one seven Linden Dr. Just about a a block and a half from here.”
Kelley took off towards the house in a run. Maybe the residents were kind of enough to help them. He got to the door and went to his knees, taking in heavy gulps of air. Walking to the front door, he rang the doorbell.
“Hello? Is anybody home?”
“One second,” a tired voice replied.
The door opened as Connor looked at the man wearing a pair of shorts and rubbing his eyes.
“I'm sorry to disturb you young man. But did a young girl, a shepard, and a cattle dog come by here?”
“Yeah. They said they had an accident and nobody would help them.”
Kelley let out a sigh of relief.
“Are they still here?”
“No. The one called Lilly was in bad shape and taken to the hospital by my friend.”
“Did he say how bad?”
“Just that she may have a serious head injury.”
“Which hospital did they go to?”
“Express Scripts Hybrid Hospital.”
“Thank you young man,” Kelley said shaking his hand.
He took off back towards Victor who was talking with some other officers. He spotted Kelley running towards him.
“I need a ride to the Express Scripts hospital.”
“Sure thing. Larry, give the congressman a ride the hybrid hospital.”
Larry nodded as they hopped into the cruiser and took off. Kelley's mind was in panic mode. Was Lilly okay? Was Sonya and Trevor okay also? If anything happened to either of them he would be crushed forever. The hospital came into view in a few minutes, thanks to the sirens Larry had going. He rushed inside and went straight to the front desk.
“Welcome to the Express Scripts Hospital. What can I do for you?” the receptionist asked.
“I need to see my daughter. She came into here with a cattle dog and a shepard.”
“Let me see here. Ah yes, they are in the ER, room five.”
“Thank you. Which way?”
“Down the hall all the way and to the right.”
He walked at a hurried pace, making sure not to bump into anybody. Reaching the ER section, he found room five and walked in. Sonya looked up and cheered.
“DADDY!!”
“Oh baby, are you okay?” he asked, hugging her tightly and kissing her forehead.
“I'm fine daddy.”
He broke off and looked at her. She had a small bandage on over her left eyebrow as well as a cut on her lip. He balled his fists angrily at the thought of somebody trying to hurt his family. Looking up he saw Trevor with his chest bandage up.
“Trevor, what happened?”
“I'm sorry Kelley. It all happened so fast. After our lunch, we went for a walk in the park. It was there I noticed we were being followed. After losing the first car, we were blindsided by another and rolled down the hill.”
“Do you know who did it?”
“No sir.”
“Daddy, don't be mad at Trevor, please?” Sonya said softly.
Kelley smiled before hugging her again.
“I'm not mad honey. Stay here, I'll be right back.”
He gave her another kiss on the forehead before leaving. Walking up to the desk, the lamb hybrid looked up at him with a smile.
“What can I do for you sir?”
“Who's the doctor in charge?”
“That would be Dr. Peterson.”
“I want to see him.”
“I'm sorry sir, but he's not available at the moment. He's overseeing a difficult surgery.”
“Where?”
“I can't.....”
“I said WHERE?” Kelley shouted slamming his hands on the desk.
Security hurried over to see what the problem was as Kelley was causing a scene. Derrick heard the commotion and walked over as well.
“What's going on?” he asked.
Kelley looked at him before breaking free of the hold the security had on him.
“I want to speak to the doctor in charge.”
“He's overseeing a complex surgery at the moment. Is there anything I can help you with?”
“My hybrid was in a bad accident and I want to know how she's doing. Please?”
Derrick noticed the strain in his voice and the sweat build up on his forehead. He smiled before nodding his head.
“I'll take you to him. Follow me.”
“Thank you so much.”
He followed Derrick down a long hallway before knocking on a door marked private. The door buzzed open as Ryudo was looking down through a window at the operation that was going on.
“What is it?” Ryudo asked not taking his eyes away.
“Dr. Peterson, there's somebody here to see you.”
“I'm busy. Tell them to come back.”
“That's my hybrid you're operating on,” Kelley spoke up.
Ryudo turned around to see Kelley hurry up to the window. Tears came down his face as he went to both knees.
“Lilly.....oh god. What's wrong with her?”
“She has a really bad intracranial hemorrhage.”
“How bad are we talking about?”
“We had to put her in a drug induced coma to calm down her heart rate. She may be like that for a while also. Head injuries are severe cases. But we have the best doctor in there now.”
Kelley started crying hard. Why was this happening now? He was so close to having the bill pass, only to have the love of his life laying in bed in a coma. Ryudo looked at him, feeling sorry for giving him the bad news. He was about to speak when the speaker crackled to life.
“Dr. Peterson, I need you in here,” Hunt spoke up.
“Be right there. If you'll excuse me sir, I'm needed down there. Once the operation is successful, we'll let you know where she'll be at. If not....”
“Just stop right there. I'm not going to lose her. That girl is going to be my wife and I refuse to let her die. Now you get down there and do your fucking job.”
Ryudo looked at him, eyebrow raised. Without another word, he left him there to assist Hunt.

Gail sat on the bed in his room, book in hand as he read and chuckled away. He had to get away from Rose because something about her just didn't sit right with him. Why did she come here? She had to be up to something. He looked at the clock to see the time was almost six and Ryudo wasn't back yet. A knock on the door made his ears perk as he looked at it.
“Who is it?”
“It's me Rose. Can I come in?”
“Why?”
“Just to talk.”
Gail's ears twitched before he placed the book down.
“Fine.”
Rose came in wearing a shirt and a pair of his mom's sweatpants. His nose picked up the subtle scent of perfume on her. She walked over and sat on the bed, hands in her lap and head down, ears folded.
“Have I done something to offend you Gail?” she asked softly.
“No,” Gail said with a soft sigh after a few moments of silence.
“Then why do I get the sense of distrust from you?” she asked, looking at him.
Gail sat on the bed's edge and looked at the ceiling.
“Because your story just seems to.....normal. Every hybrid has an abusive master. But the ones that run away, usually end up back where they were bought.”
“So you can't believe that a hybrid can avoid detection if they wanted?”
“I'm not saying that. I'm just saying I heard this story before. But none of those hybrids ever came here. Which is why I don't trust you.”
Rose bit her lip. This damn hyena was too smart for his own good. She had to think of something and fast.
“What would it take to get you to trust me?”
“Maybe if you mated with me right here I would be inclined to trust you,” Gail chuckled.
He let out a yip when he felt a paw caress his chest. Looking to his right, he saw Rose slide closer, her eyes closed half way as she let out a purr. She gave his chest light scratches making his tail twitch. Leaning over, she licked his neck softly getting a small moan from Gail.
“If that's what it takes, I'm willing to do it. We're all alone after all.”
“Where....did my....mom go?” he asked, panting softly.
“She and that weird wolf with wings left to watch the sunset.”
“His name is Nick.”
She gave a soft growl before biting his neck gently causing him to yip. Her left paw that was caressing his chest went further down to his shorts that had an obvious tent in it. She slid her paw inside and gripped it softly making Gail inhale sharply.
“My, you're a big boy,” she purred.
Gail could only whimper as those soft paw pads caressed him. He felt his body being pushed backwards as she straddled his hips. She leaned down and kissed him softly, both their eyes closing in the moment. Her tongue wanted entrance which was giving access after a few tries. Gail didn't know what to do. Her lips were so soft and her scent was heaven. He reached up slowly before wrapping his arms around her and letting out a soft growl.
Rose let out a soft moan as she felt him squeeze her ass. She grinded her hips onto his, feeling that hyena cock press into her. She hate to admit it, but she kinda needed this. Breaking off, they both panted softly, looking each other in the eyes.
“You're not a bad kisser hun.”
Gail blushed before averting his eyes.
“I've had some practice.”
“Oh? With who if I may ask? Is it that cute collie I saw earlier?”
“No.”
“Then who?” she purred, giving him another kiss.
Gail arms tightened up on Rose's body as his instincts screamed for him to ravage the hell out of the body in his arms. Something rubbed his wrists as he looked down to see the braclet Ryudo gave him. That snapped him back to reality as he remembered who his mate was as he shook his head and pushed her off.
“I can't do this. I'm sorry,” he said, panting heavily.
“It's okay cutie. I'm sorry for forcing myself on you.”
“That's okay. I need to get something to eat,” Gail said, adjusting his shorts before leaving the room.
Rose let a frown on her face before crossing her arms over her chest in a huff.
“The nerve. I practically threw myself at him like a cheap whore.”
Since he was gone, she figured she'd look around and try to find something. His room was neat and tidy much to her surprise. She couldn't find anything worth while sadly so she left. The sound of dishes being moved and Gail humming could be heard downstairs. She walked over to the other room and opened it. The first thing she noticed was the subtle scent of sex. Maybe this master loved to have other women in bed.
“Let's see if I can find anything in here.”
She walked into Ryudo's room and saw all the picture frames holding his various licenses. She hated to do this, especially to somebody that helps her kind but she had a job to do. Her nose picked up another scent on the bed. Leaning closer, she was about to inhale when somebody cleared their throat making her jump.
“What are you doing in my master's room?” Gail asked.
“Just wondering what kind of master you have. You never told me what your master does.”
“Because I don't trust you. Especially not after this. Get out.”
“But Gail....”
“GET OUT!!” he snarled.
Rose folded her ears and hurried out the room, down to the living room where she plopped down quickly onto the couch. Gail came down a few moments later, teeth bared as a growl was in his throat. He sat down in front of her and crossed his arms.
“Alright. I want the truth. Who are you and why are you here? And if you lie to me, god help you.”
Rose looked at him before averting her eyes. She didn't know if this kid could fight and she didn't want to take any chances. With a sigh, she closed her eyes before looking at him.
“Alright, what do you want to know?”

Kelley sat in a chair, Sonya in his lap and out cold. Trevor was standing up, ears bent half way and tail drooped as they waited for the doctor's word. God, if Kelley lost not only his wife but Lilly also, he wouldn't know what to do. Lilly meant everything to not only him, but Sonya also. Trevor's ears perked and looked to his left to see Ryudo walk up to them. Kelley stood up with Sonya in his arms. He saw the grim look in his face as tears started to build up.
“Doctor, please tell me something good.”
“We manage to stop the bleeding in her brain.”
“Oh, that's a relief.”
“But she may be in a coma......indefinitely.”
Kelley mouth dropped, tears falling freely now. Trevor was whining also, tears coming down his muzzle as he balled his fists angrily.
“Can I......see her?”
“Of course. This way.”
Ryudo lead him down the hall to the IC ward. Walking to room three, he stood outside the door and waited. Kelley looked at him as he nodded his head. With a deep, shaky breath, Kelley walked in. There on the bed with her head wrapped was Lilly. The machine monitoring her was beeping steadily which was the only noise you could hear. Kelley walked over and gently let Sonya down on the chair before walking over. He raised his hand and caressed her cheek softly, tears falling onto the covers.
“I'm so sorry love. This is all my fault.”
“No sir, it's mine,” Trevor said angrily. “I was the one you trusted with their well being and I failed. I'm so sorry sir. If you want to punish me, I more then deserve it.”
Kelley looked at Trevor who was on his knees, tears falling to the ground as he whined.
“You did your job Trevor.”
Ryudo walked in after knocking and went to the bed, reading her chart.
“Will she wake up soon?” Kelley asked.
“That I can't answer sir. It all depends on her willpower. The surgery was a success so she should recover fully. Her motor functions might need some rehab but you can handle that.”
Ryudo watched as Kelley leaned over and kissed her lips softly before holding her paw.
“Were you serious when you said she was going to be your wife?”
“Dead serious. Once I get this bill passed, I will marry her.”
“Who are you? Sorry if I ask questions. I just don't pay attention to the news sadly.”
“Congressman Kelley Gold. I'm trying to get supporters for the bill of equal right to hybrids to by-pass congress and get it signed by the president. I'm almost there. Just need a few more supporters and the bill will be signed.”
“I see,” Ryudo said.
He looked at Lilly for a bit before looking out the window to the night sky.
“I'm also in love with a hybrid.”
Kelley looked at him in a bit of shock.
“Do people that work for you know this? You could be forced out if they find out.”
“Nobody knows except Dr. Thomas, because he's in love with his hybrid also. I work my ass off to get where I am and I refuse to let anybody or anything stop me from being who I am. My parents tried to change me but that didn't work.”
“Strong words from such a young man.”
“Well, when your parents are rich, you have a lot of people watching you all the time. They expect great things to come from you.”
“I see. Then maybe you can help me. I need a few more supporters. Do you think you and some of your co-workers can help?”
Ryudo was quiet as he looked out the window. He started laughing before looking at him.
“Should've asked sooner. I'll be happy to ask my friends.”
“Thank you son. You've done a great thing for hybrids all around.”
Ryudo smiled before heading to the door.
“I'm going to head home. Been a long day. But I'll be on stand by in case anything goes wrong. You should get some sleep also Kelley.”
Kelley watched him leave before looking at Lilly. She looked so peaceful, without a care in the world. He wanted to stay with her, but she would be furious if he did. He still had a job to do. He stood up and looked at Trevor.
“Listen to me Trevor. Nobody enters this room unless it's me or Dr. Peterson. Do I make myself clear?”
Trevor wiped his eyes before nodding his head.
“Yes sir. Crystal.”
Kelley nodded before walking over and kissing Lilly softly.
“I'm going to get this bill passed love. And when you wake up, we'll be together.”
He kissed Sonya also before heading out, patting Trevor on the shoulder and nodding his head. Trevor stood outside the door as Kelley left, making good on his promise. He would not fail again. A noise caught his ears as he looked to the left to see somebody turning the corner. Ginger chuckled as she held the tape recorder and played it back, hearing the confession of both her mark and Kelley.
“Hehe, I can't believe I got them both on tape. Guess I can call it a day. Better head over and get Rose so we can get back home.”
///////
“I'm sorry,” Rose said.
She told him everything as Gail just growled.
“You make me sick. And you call yourself a hybrid? How could you lower yourself to their level?”
“It was just a job. I didn't know how much that human meant to you.”
Gail growled angrily. He wanted to jump over the small table and slash her throat wide open and she knew it. The familiar engine pulled up the driveway and came to a stop. The front door opened as Ryudo walked in, exhaustion on his face. He passed by the living room to see Gail and a lynx sitting there.
“Am I missing something Gail?” Ryudo asked.
“Ryudo, meet Rose. She's here to find dirt on you to blackmail you. Her partner is a human called Ginger Grey.”
“I kinda figured that. I had the pleasure of meeting her before lunch.”
Ryudo took a seat near Gail who cuddled into his chest. Rose looked on, a bit of envy on her face.
“You two really are in love aren't you?”
“Is that wrong?” Ryudo asked.
“I'm just.....surprised. I never thought I would see a human romantically involved with a hybrid. Its almost too good to be true.”
“Haven't you had anybody you loved before?”
Rose went quiet. She did have somebody she loved, but he was taken from her by a human. Her ear rang as she jumped from it.
“What's wrong?” Ryudo asked.
“It's Ginger. She's calling me.”
“Well, answer her.”
Rose nodded before tapping her ear.
“Yes Ginger?”
“I got everything we need to get the job done. Get out of there and I'll pick you up.”
She looked at both of them. Was this really the right thing to do? She closed her eyes and took a breath before responding.
“We can't do this Ginger. It's wrong.”
“What are you talking about? I already got the evidence to put them both out of business. I have them both on tape confessing to be hybrid lovers.”
“Are you really going to destroy them just cause humans are losing money? When did we stoop so low Ginger?”
Ginger was quiet on the other side.
“Let's not do this now. They could be listening in on you.”
“They already know everything Ginger.”
“You dummy. What are playing at? Get your ass out of there before its too late.”
“I won't. This isn't right.”
She could hear the frustration in Ginger's voice.
“Fine. Then I guess.........this is goodbye.”
“Ginger.....please. Don't do this. Ginger? Ginger?”
She got no answer as she whined.
“I take it she let you go?” Ryudo asked.
“Yes. She also said she has something to put you and Kelley out of business. Some kind of recording about you being hybrid lovers.”
Ryudo eyes went wide. She was eavesdropping in on their conversation at the hospital. If that got out to the paper, shit would hit the fan.
“Shit. If it's not one thing it's another. Why can't I catch a break just this once?” Ryudo growled angrily.
He stood up and went to the front door and put his shoes on.
“Where are you going?” Gail asked.
“To find her and stop her.”
“She's staying at the Charter Hotel. Here, take this card, it'll let you in,” Rose said, tossing him a card.
“Thanks.”
He opened the door and was about to walk out before looking back.
“Make yourself at home,” he smiled before leaving.
///////
Ginger entered her hotel room, tears in her eyes. She couldn't believe she let Rose go. All because of this stupid job. Tossing her purse down on the table, she sat on the couch and wiped her eyes.
“Hard to let somebody go you like huh?” a voice said from the shadows.
Ginger let out a scream of surprise before rushing to the phone, only to find it was unplugged from the wall.
“Who are you? What do you want?”
“To talk.”
The figure walked out of the shadows to reveal Ryudo. Ginger let out a sigh before frowning. She walked up and gave he a slap to the cheek.
“You trying to give me a heart attack?”
“You need a heart before you can have that.”
She let out a huff before heading to the kitchen. She found a bottle of wine, popped the top and poured herself a glass before downing it.
“Alright, lets talk then,” she said. “I want to know the truth.”
“Very well,” Ryudo said taking a seat. “What do you want to know?”
“Why do it? Why fall in love with these things? You are rich. You can have any woman in the world you want.”
“Simple. They see me more as just dollar bills. They see me as their equal, just like I see them. All the girls care about is their rep and how good they look to their friends. They could give two shits about me.”
Ginger took another sip before walking over and sitting on the couch.
“Don't you want kids? You know its impossible to have kids with hybrids.”
“Kids are the last things on my mind right now. I became a hybrid doctor to help hybrids live a full, happy life. My happiness comes from them.”
“What do your parents have to say about this?”
“They know and fully support me.”
Ginger crossed her legs and looked at him. How could a cute guy like this end up with a hybrid? It just doesn't seem fair.
“So.....what's it like having sex with them?” Ginger asked with a blush.
“Getting a little personal there don't you think?” Ryudo said with a grin.
“Just answer the question jerk.”
“It's like having your own fluffy plushie. Hybrids are better lovers then humans in my opinion.”
“I wouldn't know.”
“Don't knock it til you try it Ms. Grey. Humans will cheat on you if they aren't happy or their needs aren't satisfied. Hybrids on the other hand, are loyal and will try their hardest to make the both of you happy. All they want is to be treated equal. Is that so much to ask for?”
Ginger thought about it for a bit. Rose was doing the hard work and trying her best to please her. She never asked for anything other then a warm bed and something to eat. She had a few men in her life, but they were all demanding assholes. Rose stuck with her through it all and was always there to comfort her.
“You wanted the truth, and I gave it to you. What you do with it, is up to you. If you want to destroy me and Kelley, then feel free. I won't try and stop you. All I want you to do, is see both sides of the coin. I'll leave you alone and I apologize for intruding. Have a good night Ms. Grey,” Ryudo said standing up and give a small bow of his head.
Ginger watched him place the key card on the table before being left alone in the room. Her thoughts were running wild. Maybe Ryudo was right. She needed to see both sides of the coin. Reaching over, she grabbed the tape recorder and started listening again to Kelley and Ryudo's conversation. Everything they said was true in a way. Her phone started to ring as she looked at the ID and saw Hanley's name.
“Yes?” she said.
“Have you got everything you need? Lincoln's ready to print what you have written down.”
Ginger looked at her notes seeing everything she had written down which was designed to break down the hospital's status and get Ryudo out of Hanley's hair.
“Ginger?”
“Yeah, I have everything I need.”
“Good. Hand it to Lincoln and he'll get it printed for tomorrow's headlines. Good job. I knew I could depend on you. You've done everyone here a great service. Glad to have you on our side.”
She hung up and tossed the phone on the table.
“ Our side huh? I'm on nobody's side but my own. They want a story, I'll give them one they won't forget,” she smiled before grabbing her notebook and started writing.
///////
Kelley sat by Lilly's bed side, his hand holding her paw softly. Sonya walked over and hugged him.
“Is Lilly okay daddy?”
“Of course she is hun. She's just sleeping.”
“Is she going to sleep forever like mommy?”
That crushed him deeply as his voice broke a little.
“No hun. She'll wake up. We need her to.”
A knock on the door was heard as Ryudo walked in. He took a look at her chart before adjusting her IV bags. Sonya tugged his coat as he looked down at her.
“Is Lilly going to wake up doctor?”
“She will little one. I won't let her sleep forever. I promise you that.”
Footsteps were heard running down the hall. Trevor stood ready as Derrick turned the corner.
“What do you want? You're not allowed in here,” Trevor growled.
“It's okay Trevor. He's with me,” Ryudo said.
Trevor nodded, letting Derrick in. Derrick walked over and showed him the paper.
“You're famous bro. Take a look at the headlines.”
The headline read: Express Scripts Hospital does wonders for the hybrid community. Ryudo had to smile at that as he saw his face talking with some patients. Ginger actually did the right thing.
“You going to cut this out and put it on your fridge?” Derrick chuckled.
“Funny man.”
“I know right? This was always sent to you with a lipstick kiss. Looks like you got an admirer. I'm needed in ER so I'll catch you at lunch.”
Ryudo watched him leave before looking at the note and opening it.
“Ryudo. Thanks for opening my eyes and seeing both side of the story. I'm sorry for trying to blackmail you and Kelley. I hope the article I wrote will show everybody just the kind of person you really are. I may get in trouble, but it was worth it. The recording I made was given to your hybrid for safe keeping. He really is a cutie I must say. You picked a good hybrid and a good way of life Ryudo Peterson. Never change who you are. I hope we meet again on better terms. Ginger Grey.”
Ryudo smiled at that before pocketing it. A soft moan caught everybody's attention as they looked at Lilly. She whined softly before opening her eyes slowly and looking around. She found Kelley with tears in his eyes as he kissed her paw.
“What's wrong love?” she asked softly.
“Nothing's wrong now Lilly. Everything is just right.”
“Lilly!” Sonya cheered, climbing in the bed and giving her a hug making her chuckle. “I thought you wouldn't wake up like mommy didn't.”
“I would never leave you honey. You are my special little cub,” she said, kissing her forehead.
Kelley leaned over and kissed her softly making her murr happily. Ryudo walked over and checked her vital signs seeing everything was good.
“I thought you would be asleep longer then this. You have a strong will power.”
“How long was I out for doctor?” she asked.
“Three days. I figured you would be out for longer then that.”
Lilly gasped at that. The last thing she remembered was being in the jeep.
“What happened?”
“You were in an accident,” Trevor said softly. “I blame myself for not protecting you better. I'm sorry.”
Lilly smiled before motioning him over. Trevor walked over, ears folded and tail between his legs. He leaned over as she gave him a kiss on the forehead.
“You did your job Trevor. I wouldn't be here if it wasn't for you. Thank you.”
Trevor smiled at that, giving a murr as she tickled his chin. Kelley smiled before standing up as Ryudo walked over.
“I'll have to keep her here to observe her for the next couple of days. I hope you don't mind?”
“Not at all. Besides, I already got the supporters I need. Just have to head back to Washington.”
“What are you going to do in the meantime?”
“Find out who tried to kill my family,” he said angrily.
“Just don't do anything that will jeopardize all your hard work.”
“Don't worry about that. I know a few people that can do things quietly.”
///////
Hanley was fuming as he read the paper next to Ivory and Joyce.
“Looks like your reporter friend failed,” Ivory said.
“So it seems. But there is always a plan B.”
“And what would that be?”
Hanley looked at her before grinning.
“I don't want to ruin my surprise just yet. All we have to do, is make sure he doesn't get back to Washington.”
