Chapter 40 - Blackout

-H-

I was in a nightmare. My wolf was fighting to the death a few feet away from me. My best friend was being strangled on top of me. A lovecraftian horror and abomination was reaching out of me. It was mutating before my eyes as it clawed and clutched at my friend's throat. How could I fight something that was inside of me? It's limb had grown hard like bone, segmented and rigid, some parts sharp and brittle stuck out like shards and cut at my skin. I had to ignore the cuts, punching and hitting at the bones as I tried to pry those grasping digits off of James' throat.

"Let him go, let him go! Fuck! James!.. Joelle help!" What could she do? What could we do?

Tears streaked my cheeks as much as hers. My hands were half bound in duct tape, but I fought with every ounce of strength I had to pry that arm off of my friend's neck. More of that alien looking limb pulled out of me. Once more it shifted, turning black and oily again.. my fingers sinking into it. It burned. It was hot, like boiling oil. I cried out as it seared slowly at my skin, but it had poor James by his throat. It was burning him, and he couldn't breathe. He couldn't even yell out in pain, his eyes were wide in terror.

"James!" Joelle screamed out for him through her tears, rushing towards us suddenly.

I heard crackling and sparking, briefly catching a glimpse of something in her hand. Her arm shot out and pressed a fat, black remote looking thing towards the creature's arm. I saw a little chirping line of blue electricity arcing along the device before she wedged it hard against the arm. A taser! Joelle you beautiful woman! The crackling shifted to a dull screech as the current arced through that inky arm. It's fingers clenched tight and spasmed, shooting open and releasing poor James.

He fell back roughly, yanking himself away from us as Joelle shocked that mutant arm. That limb spasmed and shifted through it's colors and materials rapidly, tugging back inside of me and disappearing. It had retreated.. but I felt no sense of safety. That monster could burst out of my chest like an alien again at any moment.

Joelle started to make sure James was okay, but he waved her away and pointed at me as he rubbed his bruised neck. She rushed to my aid, blushing and averting her gaze as she helped rip the duct tape and tattered shirt off my wrists. As she helped unwrap my poor head, so I could see and breathe. She went slow at first, but could see it was hurting and shuffled through her purse for scissors to cut my hair free. I was going to look like a crazy person, naked and with a bad haircut in the subway. When the boys in blue show up to cart me away, I can tell them about the demons and aliens that come out of my body.

Nurse Ratched here I come.

I covered myself as best as I could and helped James to his feet, the three of us standing there watching the terrifying struggle of teeth and claws between the two beasts. The cat had my wolf's neck in his jaws! My fists clenched as I ran towards them, true and raw anger filling me.. not just annoyance, it wasn't mild. He was hurting my wolf. I didn't care that I was naked, I had my shoes on still. I lifted one up and tried to slam it into and kick the cat’s head and side, over and over. He grunted and snarled out at my blows, clawing and slashing at my bare leg, leaving bloody gashes.

"Let him go you pink fuck!" I kicked him hard in the side of the head, stunning him before he lashed his hindleg out hard and kicked me back.

He knocked the wind right out of me, hitting me in the stomach and sending me stumbling back. James caught me, the two of them had already been moving in to help. Joelle kept moving, taser in hand. The electricity crackled in that short, high pitched buzz between the prongs as she thrust it towards the cat. He yanked my wolf by his neck and a loud yelp echoed out as the taser pushed into his fur instead.

"Oh god! I'm sorry baby, no.." Joelle was horrified, yanking her hand back as she accidentally hit my wolf.

She didn't relent though, I was proud of her.. the cat had made a dirty play but she leapt on them both and pressed the taser into his bare pink neck. His jaws released immediately as he yowled out, scrambling back and kicking her and my wolf away. Blood seeped from his dark neck fur. His eyes were unfocused and kept trying to close, only to yank open and scan the room in a daze. He locked into the retreating cat and charged him.

My wolf was off balance, but all four of us were up and moving as the cat ran for the door, ducking under a swipe of my wolf's claws. The fleshy pink monster was agile, but he was moving slower, he was limping. My wolf must have really injured the cat's hindleg in their struggle. He darted out the door and around the corner, hugging close to the dark walls. The only lights were little guide lights marking the tunnel every hundred feet. It wasn't much, but the beasts both seemed to see just fine as they ran along the tunnel walkway.

The three of us tried to keep pace, running along behind them and shouting. Joelle passed me the blanket that my wolf had been using, giving me something to cover up with at least. It also shielded me from the cold of the tunnel. I did not have the body fat to keep warm without it. We had to run single file, it was too narrow to do anything else. My wolf was catching up to the cat, he'd grab him any minute now. We still didn't have a plan. James had my backpack, it had some tape in it still. That didn't work out great when I was rolling solo but I had help now. We just had to get a hold of him and hold him down.

"How do we stop him?.." Joelle panted out as we ran. "We aren't going to kill him right?.. What is the plan?.."

She sounded worried, and so was I. What could we do? When my wolf had gotten him in his grasp the two of them just ended up bloody and hurt. I didn't want him to get himself killed.

"Joelle, your taser.. maybe we could stun him and.." I didn't have much of an idea of how that'd work, it shocked the cat and made him jerk away last time, it didn't stun him.

"The rails." James spoke out calmly as we ran, looking back at me.

"What?.."

"The third rail.. knock him down onto it."

Joelle shook her head, gesturing down to the tracks, "We can't do that, it could kill him! It's covered for safety anyway.."

"Only the top part.. the side is exposed. The cover barely protects it."

James was right. The cat didn't understand modern things.. he wouldn't know that it's dangerous. We could push him down onto the rails and hope he touched it right? If it didn't outright kill him it would stun him at least. That many volts would take down a rhino I bet. How could we do that without tipping him off to our plan? How could we tell my wolf what to do without the cat hearing.. or at least not understanding what he'd heard.

"Hey, nacho boat!" I shouted out down the tunnel at the cat, grinning as he flashed an annoyed glare back at me.

It was all my wolf needed for a distraction to close that last bit of distance, leaping at him, tackling him. We had to do it now, before they tore each other up. My heart pounded hard as I ran to catch up.

"Push him onto the rails!.." My voice echoed off the walls.

There was no time to figure out some coded way to say it. We didn't have some deep trove of inside jokes and experiences, like James and I had.. My wolf was just as new and clueless to this world as the cat was. We could only hope that shoving him onto the rails would do the trick. My wolf let loose an angry roar right in the cat's face, as he grabbed hold of his shoulders, spittle and drool splashing across the fleshy monster's skin.

Then my wolf tackled him right over the edge.

"No!"

The three of us caught up too late, they hit the rails hard, a low crunch made me fear broken bones but I feared that powered rail more. The two struggled for mere moments on the tracks, fighting with each other and rolling, before both let out a deep, sharp combined cry of pain. The few lights around us flickered as a horrible sound emanated from the pair of beasts, alongside the sharp static and snap of a powerful electric shock.

The tunnel went black and everything went still, dead silent.
