Seven Days Chapter 12
Trying to get back into the swing of things and this chapter is ready for sharing. Though I don't know how much more I'll be able to post at this point because I've come up against a really big issue: the rest of the book needs to be restructured and rewritten because there isn't enough conflict/drama... and for a romance novel, there has to be some drama at the very least (but trying to navigate romance-novel tropes and still hold true to the spirit of the novel is not easy.)
I had thought writing a novel wouldn't be so difficult (and my perfectionist streak is making it really hard to get shit done.)
Anyhoo, here's the next chapter where Arh and William begin their trek home from the palace. William also touches on some of the shadows that are currently chasing him.
The morning sun streamed through the windows into our bed-chamber. Its golden rays bathed the two of us in its warmth while we lay there, and with me watching Arh as he slept. In the light of the sun his face looked almost like the stars were residing in his skin with the way they glimmered. It gave me something to focus on rather than letting my mind run over and over as to why I came with him to this world.
I wanted to think that what I was feeling for him was affection, or at least the potential for it. Even the queen recognized it when our minds touched. But I couldn't help but question it all; was it wise of me to leap at the chance to come with him and become a dragon? Or was I so lonely that I would abandon my very humanity to end it?
And that's not even covering why I, a human, found the idea of being intimate with him alluring. I tried to distract myself from that thought by focusing on him; trying to avoid thinking about what his body felt like, and instead focusing on him as another living being. How he had his own hopes and fears, interests and aversions, but I kept coming back to how the way his body felt next to mine, how my head felt like it naturally fit as it was nestled into the crook of his arm.
Hearing his heart-beat soothed my nerves, which were trying to stage a revolt. The steadiness of it was serene and reminded me that as much as it felt like this could just be some vast and all-encompassing hallucination, this was real. But it all seemed too perfect.
However, there was another thought that rose up in me when my body realized I had woken; I really needed to piss.
Sighing, I leaned up and looked around the room to remember where we were.
This was one of the guest chambers in the queen's palace. And while the room was big, compared to Arh's size it was, as they say, “cozy."
It wasn't opulent, but it was an upgrade from the plain white walls of my apartment… and I didn't believe I deserved any of this.
Stepping out, the stone under my feet was colder than I anticipated. Colder still the rim of the basin I sat on in the alcove.
Was I truly worthy of joining with Arh? He seemed to be a well-respected member of dragon-society; He had an education, a career, and more people wishing him well than I could ever claim. All I could say I had was a collection of names in an address book that stood as a trophy of failed attempts to find companionship.
Before I went back, I saw there was a wooden bench sitting in front of a mirror and I thought I may as well sit to waste some time.
I was a bit shocked when I looked at the face staring back at me. I wanted to think, at that moment, that I had somehow grown past the sense that the face staring back at me wasn't my own. It was silly, but I must have held on to the hope that when I looked, I would see a glimmer of the dragon that the queen seemed to recognize in me. But all that looked back at me from the polished surface was this small, fleshy thing that never felt right; it was more like a suit I was forced to wear that never fit.
And that brought back the bitterness of my memories; laughter, mostly, but also jeers and jokes as if my face was the punchline to a joke that never seemed to have any end.
And then came all the insults I remembered hearing. Insults phrased carefully, of course, because it wouldn't do to have me scolded on things I couldn't control in public. Words that would appear elegant and caring, but I knew the disguise they wore were just for show because those words would, when behind closed doors, lose all elegance to become barbs intended to humiliate and sow guilt and doubt. After enough time those words became all that I was, and all I could ever be.
I remember thinking that even on the cusp of my new life, I was still letting those old nightmares exert power over me. So I needed a distraction. Besides, it wouldn't do me any good to ruminate like this when so much was primed to turn to the better.
I would be better. I would be stronger. I wouldn't be anyone's prey any longer. So I let my eyes wander to the shelf in front of me and the various bottles placed on it.
My fingertips grazed among the flock until they found a small phial. Grasping it with my fingers, I lifted it up and removed the glass stopper from the neck. The aroma that wafted out confirmed that whatever was in it was a perfumed oil of some kind.
Unfortunately, this bottle contained a smell that pricked at my nose. It reminded me of the scent the elderly ladies in the apartment next to mine would wear when they went out on the town. I could never forget that smell because the air in the hall would stink like it for hours, and it would seep under my door, making me wish I had a collection of scented candles to light in the hopes that they'd fight off the encroaching stench with their more pleasing aroma.
I placed the stopper back and returned it to where I found it. Near it there was another that I spied and this bottle was quite different from the other. Where the previous appeared to be made of faceted crystal, this one was taller with metallic vines woven together near the top that made it look like the stopper had grown down to hold it in place.
When I opened it, the smell that leapt up into my nose reminded me of spice, and a fresh orchard where the limbs of the trees were laden heavily with fruit that they would drop at the slightest jostle. In short, this one was far more appealing than the last. Emboldened as I was I decided to put my finger-tip over the opening to tip it on its side. I liked the idea of wearing it, and where it touched my skin it left a gentle tingling sensation.
Rubbing the rest into my cheeks, it was brought to my attention that I hadn't had a chance to shave in quite some time. The hairs were long enough that they moved with every stroke, rather than prick at my fingers like tiny blades.
My hair was also in need of a brushing. But as there were neither a comb nor brush to be found, I had to make due with my hands as I tried to smooth it down so as to appear civilized.
I could have sat there, but every second I wasted was time where my imagination would start curving back to the thoughts I wished to stifle. So rather than staying here, I decided to get up and return to bed.
On my way back I grabbed an apple from the tray. I took a few bites as I watched the sleeping dragon on the pile of furs. I didn't know why, but seeing his face helped unfurl the bundle of nerves that seemed intent on twisting themselves together.
He opened his eyes to look at me.
“Good morning." I said as I crawled close so I could place a kiss on his snout.
“Good morning to you, keo'vah…" He paused, and his smile widened. “I never thought I would be so fortunate to say that." He moved his head after yawning to look to the light from outside. “Is it morning or past noon?"
“I think it's still morning." I responded.
“Mmm… Good." He replied, smacking his tongue around his mouth then laying his head back on the mattress.
I crawled into bed with him. If seeing him could melt my worries, being close to him might remove them from me. He chose to help by pulling me close in his arms when I was in reach and saying “mine" with a playful chuckle.
I didn't keep track of how long we cuddled. I was held close to his chest hearing his heart and feeling the slow rhythm of his breathing. In those few moments time lost control over us and we could have wasted the entire day like this. I would have been happy to spend whatever time we had left in his embrace.
“Keo'vah." His deep voice intruded, coaxing be back into the present. “While I would like to, we cannot stay here long." He raised his head to look out the window. “As much as I enjoy the thought of wasting the day here with you, there is one last place I want to show you before we begin the joining."
I groaned, but I knew he was right; this wasn't our home; we were guests of the queen.
“Fine, I'll get up." I eventually grumbled.
When he stepped out from the bed, he brought his head closer so he could brush his cheek against mine and take in my scent.
“You smell lovely. Well, more so than usual."
I felt a flutter in my chest. I don't remember if other men ever had this effect on me.
He then kissed me on the cheek before stretching the last of the sleep from his body with a shake.
“There's some food left over from last night if you're hungry." I said, tilting my head towards the platter.
“I am not very hungry, but I will have some of that spiced meat." He said as he grabbed some in his lips to then toss his head back, snapping it into his mouth.
Then his eyes picked out the small stool by the door with my clothing folded neatly on it. “I see they have tended to your belongings."
The door was opened just a crack and when I looked out it as I picked up my things, I noticed the guard at the door turned his eye to mine, then looked back away.
I slipped the shirt on, then bent over to thread a leg into the pants. Though I looked back towards Arh when I heard his rumbling purr ramp up.
“I hope you commit your form to memory, keo'vah." He grinned. “Should you be blessed with the magic to change your shape, that is."
“Oh?" I said, working my other leg into my pants.
“I look forward to knowing what pleasures your current form hides." He said with a lecherous grin.
When I straightened up to face him, he took the opportunity to step forward to bring his head closer, and lowered it to my level. I would have buttoned my pants and pulled the fly up, but his lusty purr and hearing him state his want acted like a signal for my libido to shift into high gear.
“I would like that." I said, trying to appear confidant. He purred even louder as his cheeks turned dark from the blood rushing to them. “Do you want to know my touch now?" I slid a hand along his cheek to brush my fingers against the fins that sat in front of his ears.
The way he shivered at my touch made me feel powerful; to be able to reduce a creature like him to a quivering mass was thrilling.
“Yes." He huffed. “But we do not have the time."
The kobold guard that was now standing in the door watching us decided to announce himself by clearing his throat.
“Okay." I said, letting my hand slip from Arh's cheek to my pants, trying to wedge my cock into it so I could zip my fly up.
The walk through the palace was quick, but looked much the same as when we arrived; Crowds of dragons wandering the halls, most of them talking among themselves. But, as before, heads turned to look at us as we passed.
When we stepped outside on to the field we arrived at, the light from above had me squinting. I was about to climb onto Arh's back when we heard Aes and Eis come up to us hurriedly.
“Arh'eoban, William, if we may…" Eis called to us. “I feel I must apologize to you about Kan'eath, William. He can sometimes be…" He paused, his hands gesturing as if to try and pluck the right word from the air “… indiscreet."
“Kan'eath was here?" Arh spoke up. “I did not see him at the feast."
“He was not present for the festivities." Eis's shoulders slumped. “I will not bore you further, but his presence in the baths the other day was unanticipated."
“It's okay." I offered sheepishly. “If he's close with Arh, I can understand why he would feel protective."
“Protective?" Arh said as his brow was pulled low.
After an uncomfortable silence, Aes continued. “Regardless, we feel that we should have made doubly sure that our duties to attend to you would not be interrupted as they were. Kan'eath and his keo'vah bathing at the same time was either purely accidental or…" She trailed off.
“Kan is a decent dragon." Arh interrupted. “However, he is not above using trickery to get into places he knows he should not be."
“Regardless" Aes said, “we were lax in our duties and would like to make amends." Aes gently took hold of my arm. “When you are able, we would be honored to host the two of you for supper some time." Her tone turned joyful as her scales lightened. “When our little brood found out about you, and that you were a hyoom, their curiosity was boundless."
“Perhaps at a later date." Arh spoke up. “The joining ritual looms near and he is not going to appear as a hyoom for much longer."
“Oh, that is no worry. They are driven more with the wish to hear stories of your world."
“The scamps swarmed us, nearly causing us to be late for our duties." Eis chuckled. “Mutineers, the lot of them."
Aes rubbed at her temples. “Yes, though I love them all dearly, they can be difficult at times."
“I'd be glad to meet them." I said. “I may even have a story to tell them, if that'll tame their curiosity."
“That will not work." Eis grinned. “Give them one story, and they will inevitably demand two more." He chuckled and glanced at his keo'vah. “They get their curiosity from their mother."
“And their stubbornness from their father." Aes interjected, a knowing grin on her face.
He laughed meekly, rubbing the back of his neck.
“I am grateful for your offer." I said. “Though that will depend on how long Arh wishes to keep me for his own."
“The thought is tempting." He interjected, stealing a sniff of my hair. “But it would be rude to keep you cloistered away in our nest for the rest of our days."
I blushed so deeply my flesh burned. Eis laughed. “Surely you will have sated your passions by the time you decide to visit."
Aes gasped at her keo'vah's boldness. “Eis'shan, you mongrel." She blushed. “It is hardly appropriate to make wagers on how many times they…" her blush deepened. “… share bodies."
“Oh? But remember when we became keo'vah?" He grinned. “Your modesty speaks against the hunger you showed for my flesh."
She huffed and blushed even deeper. Eis grinned and leaned in to nuzzle her cheek.
“If you were not skilled in the ways of pleasure, I would have written you off long ago." She said while her posture melted at his affection.
“It is one of the many reasons why you love me." His grin grew wider, and the blue of her scales turned deeper. “Unlike those stuffy dignitaries your father insisted you bed." He purred as he wrapped his arm to nuzzle her cheek.
After a few moments of this, they disengaged and faced the two of us once more. “Well, we shall not delay you any further." Aes spoke. “I hope that the new life you are to embark on is fulfilling."
Eis and Aes both bowed, touching their forehead reverently.
“Thank you, and I pray the gods shower you and your loved ones with blessings." Arh returned the bow.
“If you need anything, even if only a familiar face, I will be here." Aes said as she placed a hand on my arm.
“And I offer the same to you." Eis said as he placed a hand on my shoulder.
I brought them in for a hug.
They initially stiffened at the unfamiliar gesture but soon warmed to it, and returned it in kind.
After they left, Arh helped me on to his back and, with a running leap, we were in the air on our way home.
