Chapter 22: A 'Normal' Day

Once cleaned of all the sweat and slime of the previous night, Jared rejoined his team. They had all lined up, nudging their pokeballs towards the end of the couch, as usual, but this time, he didn't call them back. Instead, he tapped the balls and shrunk them down, putting them at his belt. Croccy blinked, and only Bright Eyes gave a small nod of understanding.
"What's going on?" Croccy asked.
"Well, if you're going to be treated right, then I want to see if you can behave."
"...Behave?"
"I don't think that it does any of you any good to be in the ball all the time," he admitted, shaking his head. "And it would probably be better for you to get fresh air more often. So, rather than just keeping one of you out at a time, I'm going to keep all of you out. And you can stay out as long as you don't start pulling too many pranks or getting too out of control. Fair?"
The happiness that spread through the team was palpable. Croccy started dancing, Snugs swayed side to side in perfect happiness, and even Shimmer showed a little bit of glee, though she kept hers far more subdued, nodding graciously to the rest of them.
Jared just hoped that this didn't bite him in the ass. He wanted to have them out, but they all had their own quirks. Lurch was probably the least problematic - and Shimmer, for all her vanity, was right behind him in terms of self-control - but the others...
Bright Eyes had a change last night, he reminded himself. He saw that I don't want to be just a bitch or something like that. He started to get it, and Gobbler's too lazy to cause any psychic trouble without being told to. Probably a little too sick after eating something 'real,' too...
And Snugs, for all that the snake liked to play, wouldn't try anything too ridiculous in public. The only one that might cause some real embarrassment was Croccy, and as long as the Croconaw was kept on a tight leash, he should be okay. He just needed to be careful about what they were allowed to do when he wasn't watching them, and everything should be okay. Nobody would find out what he did, or what he liked, and they would be just fine.
He forced himself to take a few deep breaths to relax as Shimmer alighted on his shoulder, her talons squeezing just firmly enough to remind him of the pointed tips while still being gentle enough to be almost like a massage. Lurch waved his little fronds for a lift, and Jared leaned down, giving the little plant the chance to get hold of his arm. From there, the Bellsprout pulled himself up with his vines, hanging onto his other shoulder for a perch.
The others were happy enough to follow along at his heels. Well, mostly; Bright Eyes was doing the flicker-shift that was the only sign of it being rapid teleporting rather than just floating along, but that wasn't a problem. So long as the Abra didn't leap miles ahead, they should be fine.
"Well...shall we go downstairs and say hi?" he asked.
His team followed him from his room, and as they walked down the stairs, they joined the rest of the Center's population getting their breakfast. The nurses, the other trainers that were staying overnight, and - of course - Bill all turned at the sound of so many things coming down the stairs, and Jared almost stopped in his tracks as Bill looked him in the eyes.
...Fucking hell...I gotta do it.
All eyes stayed on him as he reached the bottom of the stairs and walked over to the cafeteria. He walked right up to Bill, and he saw a few of the staff start to look at the phone. Even Bill tensed up just a bit -
"I'm sorry for yesterday," Jared said.
Four words that instantly cut all conversation in the room. The nurses ceased reaching for their phones, and the rest of the trainers just blinked. Bill, however, just rubbed the back of his head and looked away.
"No problem," he muttered.
"No, it...was a problem. And it was a problem with me," he said, wishing that he could have just left it there but knowing he shouldn't. Just taking that was akin to someone who abused another believing their own excuses of how it was someone else's fault. "I still don't agree, but...I shouldn't have hit you for it. I don't like it, but I don't have any right to beat you down for doing something that I don't like. And...yeah. I'm sorry."
"...Thanks." Bill nodded. "I...apology accepted."
It wasn't much, but at least he'd made the effort. And as he went to get food for himself and his Pokemon, he could feel some of the tension easing out of the room. Not all of it - after all, he had punched Bill hard enough to get the cops called on him the day before and that story had spread through town, he was sure - but enough that he didn't feel like they were all going to turn on him if he did the slightest thing wrong.
And at least I tried to make good on a mistake...
As he sat down with his team, passing out smaller bowls to each of them and reminding them not to make a mess - and reserving two of them to feed Lurch and Shimmer - he looked around the room. He didn't stand out that much, other than the fact that all of his Pokemon were out with him rather than just one. The rest of the room gave him a curious glance for that now, but no more, which was better than the anger that they had before. It was as if that little apology had completely wiped away the negative memories that they had.
Still strange.
Still weird.
Shaking his head, Jared put it out of his mind and focused on eating, feeding his Pokemon - his lovers - and getting ready for the day. He had to get to the gym leader of the city, but before that, he had a little time to kill, and he felt like it was time for him to take a little time off, anyway. He had been working hard, and he deserved a little time to himself.
#
When they left the Pokemon Center, they walked down the streets of Ecruteak to the Dance Theater that he'd seen when they'd first arrived. Shimmer followed on high, riding thermals that only she seemed to be aware of, while Lurch rested against his head. Time and time again, Snugs tried to climb up his legs to be a scaly belt, but Jared kept saying no. He saw where that tail was going, and he was not going to deal with that sort of public lewdness.
Bright Eyes appeared right in front of him as they reached the Dance Theater, and the Abra opened his eyes, making mental contact again. The slight bulging feeling that Jared was getting more and more familiar with as his new companion shared his skull was not so bad this time.
"What are you doing here?"
"Just...relaxing."
"I know what you are supposed to be doing."
"Then you know we have some more time," he muttered. "What's wrong with taking a little time off?"
"If you think that you can afford it..."
"...You're different today. What happened to you last night? Did you sleep?"
Bright Eyes shuffled slightly, going from sitting cross-legged in mid-air to being a little more relaxed. Jared smiled.
"You did, didn't you? That's why you're more focused."
"That doesn't matter. I still - nevermind. But the point stands. If you have a mission, shouldn't you be doing it?"
"...We'll talk more later. And we're not going to spend a long time here. Just a little bit. A half-hour or so, just to relax and get ready for...well, you know. The gym."
Bright Eyes stared at him for a moment, and he could feel the Abra rooting through his mind. He knew what was popping up, too. The same mix of nervousness, disdain, and flat-out annoyance for gym battles and that sort of use of Pokemon. Somehow, the fighting was more repugnant to him than the sex, and he still couldn't entirely figure that one out.
And yes, he was stalling. They both knew that. But at least this was giving him something to focus on that wasn't just one fight after another.
"Okay. But -"
"We'll talk tonight. About...you and me."
"I will hold you to that."
"About you and him?" Croccy asked, cocking his head to the side. "What's going on between you two?"
"I'll tell you about that later," he muttered. "For now, remember. Around other people. I can't always respond, now."
"Right, right, gotcha."
As Croccy mimed closing his snout, Jared stepped through the front door. The Dance Theater opened up to reveal a small square room, probably consisting of a good two-thirds of the building with the dressing rooms behind the main stage. The stage itself was occupied with five women in kimonos, wielding fans as tools as they danced elegantly around each other. They were dressed up and made up to look utterly beautiful, he imagined, their gowns shimmering against the stage lighting.
It was a surprisingly elegant five-part dance, each dancer moving with subtly different motions to their fellows. He saw that one moved more in shadow, while another moved in light. One moved with static, fast motions, darting from pose to pose, while another moved in fluid, slow shifts from one position to another. They were completely different, and yet, at the same time, telling the same story.
A cleared throat to his right pulled him out of his reverie, and he turned to face a bald, slightly chunky individual who stood behind a desk.
"Looking for a ticket?"
"I'm good with watching from here."
"Suit yourself," the older guy said, looking back at the stage. "Ain't getting any closer without one, though. Mind you, they look better when they're battling."
"...Battling? I thought this was a theater?"
"Yeah, but the city really comes out for the Pokemon fights. Double the audience, every time, but what do you expect when you have a team of five people with five different Eevee-lutions?"
"...Oh."
"Hey, they offer a reward, man. They got the Surf skill."
Surf. Oh. That...would explain why people kept coming. Even aside from the battle-frenzy that held most trainers enthralled, that was a move that tempted him, and not just for the fact that it would get Croccy the chance to swim and dart and dive with him on his back that much easier. Surf would let Croccy protect himself from more Pokemon, because it was one of the most powerful and distinct Water-type moves.
Jared looked back at the stage, mentally measuring out what sort of fight that would be, and immediately decided against it. Eevee-lutions could be extremely weak or extremely powerful depending on how they were raised, and the idea of sending his team against them really didn't sit well with him. He didn't want to push the ladies or their Pokemon into more fights. If anything, he'd like to avoid it and see if they could make a deal.
The dancers stopped, facing one another for a moment before flourishing their fans. They pointed the white and red tools to the ceiling, then flicked them sideways. Five pokeballs appeared, going right for the center of the stage before flashing with the signature white light. One by one, the Eevee-lutions appeared, ranging from the first three - Jolteon, Vaporeon, and Flareon - to the new two that had been discovered more recently. Espeon and Umbreon both took form, the latter standing almost protectively in front of his dancer, while the others stood posed and elegant before their trainers.
There was something different there, though, something that Jared couldn't quite put his finger on...but it was fascinating, nonetheless. He leaned back against the door, arms crossed, while the dance continued. Thankfully, his team was just as enraptured of the show as he was, so he could just relax, for once.
#
When the dance was over and the theater emptied, Jared took advantage of the departing crowd to slip past the old ticket-seller. As soon as line of sight was broken, he moved forward, dodging any need to buy a ticket that he couldn't afford, anyway. The dancers were already making their way to the rear of the stage, petting their various Pokemon, but they didn't seem to be heading to the dressing room, not just yet.
He waved at them as he approached, and they looked up. The Vaporeon trainer stood up once more, walking to the edge of the stage with her Water-type trailing behind her.
"Do you come to face the Five Kimono Dancers?" she asked, her voice both a little sultry and confident. "You bring quite a team behind you."
"No challenge," Jared said, shaking his head. "I don't want to challenge you."
"A pity."
"But I was going to ask -"
"Without a challenge, we have nothing to discuss," she said. "So says Sumomo."
That was not what he wanted to hear, but he could already tell that she had put the final nail in the coffin in her head. Her Vaporeon turned with a signal from her, and the dancer started walking back towards her fellow performers. Croccy tried to leap forward, but he reached out, stopping the Croconaw before he could try and start a battle.
"I can't make a deal with you about Surf?" he asked.
"It is our performance tradition. If one wants it, they must battle for it."
"You'd want to risk your Pokemon merely for the sake of a show?"
"You look down on us for that?" Sumomo asked, turning in place, dark hair falling over her face. "Do not underestimate our performance. The Kimono Sisters have been a proud part of this theater for many years, and our Pokemon likewise. Just because you may have had some luck with past gym leaders does not mean that you are ready for us."
"That isn't -"
"The power of my Vaporeon would flush you out of this theater like so much waste. If you think that you can take us, then make your challenge. Otherwise, leave."
"I don't want to challenge you. I want to do this -"
"If you do not wish to challenge us, then there is nothing left for you here."
The constant all-or-nothing approach was really starting to grate on him. He gritted his teeth, even as Lurch gently squeezed at his shoulders. Shimmer perched on his other shoulder again, the Pidgeotto fixing her glare at the dancer, and he could hear her soft, singing voice in his ear.
"I do not appreciate someone talking to my human that way. Shall I claw out her hair after I have ripped the tail off her Vaporeon?" Shimmer asked in soft clicks of her beak.
"Don't. Don't do anything," he muttered.
"I am tempted, regardless. I do not like having my pretty degraded."
Flattering as the statement was, he shook his head. Starting another fight was something that he was trying to avoid, for once. He was already in enough trouble. He didn't need another charge, particularly if his Pokemon attacked other people. That was something that criminals did, what Team Rocket did. He was not going to stoop to that level.
Sumomo continued to tower over him, though, leaving him unable to get a word in. Her bragging diatribe continued, leaving him speechless as he kept trying to get a word in, but every single time, she just steamrolled past him, pushing him back from the stage with everything she said.
Until -
"Sister."
Sumomo went silent, turning on her heel. The Umbreon's trainer had sat up a little more, and -
Oh...
Jared saw it, though he wasn't sure that anyone else would have. The other dancer's eyes were glowing, ever so slightly, and the glow was the same color as the yellow rings on the Umbreon's fur. There was a connection there, and it was...very strong.
Is she...
"Sister. I would like to talk to this man, if I may."
"You, Tamao? Since when do you have interest in our audience?"
"Since he has come and been polite, where you have been nothing but rude. Now, if I may?"
"...Be swift. We have another performance in three hours, and I want us ready for it."
"We should need no more than twenty minutes. Come."
Jared nodded, walking around the stage to meet her at the door to the back of the building. She opened it and gestured him through, and followed him and his team as soon as he was through. It led to a short hallway to a small collection of rooms. Each door was open, as well, and revealed rooms that were bigger than the one that he'd spent the night in at the Pokemon Center.
"Spacious," he muttered.
"We are blessed by the generosity of the city," Tamao said, shaking her head. "Please, get comfortable."
He did, sitting down on a folded chair that faced the larger, more comfortable chair in front of the dressing room mirror. Tamao shut the door behind her, leaving him with his team and her with her Umbreon. He expected her to take a seat in the chair, but no sooner had the door shut than the blue-haired girl stood up a little straighter, shivering slightly. The yellow in her eyes grew stronger as the Umbreon walked forward, sitting in the chair. She smiled, and to his shock, took off her dress.
Jared turned to the side, covering his eyes. Tamao chuckled.
"Oh, um, it's alright. Umbreon's done this before."
"Done...this?"
"Made me show off. He's my master rather than the other way around."
"Mmmph...I wondered. I saw -"
"One who has relations with their Pokemon can see it more than others."
Well, that confirmed that. He hadn't expected to hear that she was submissive to her Umbreon to this extent, though, and he blushed as he tried to wrap his head around that.
Yet, even as he tried to get it to make sense as a relationship, it was impossible not to imagine the slight, slender young woman sitting by the chair on all fours, her breasts hanging down, her head tilted back as she was utterly rutted by the dark-furred Pokemon sitting in her chair. He bit his lips as he looked up, grateful that she was, at least, still wearing her bra and panties, but even that was hardly without a tease. Her nipples were hard enough to see through the red fabric, and he could see the stain in her panties.
And she wasn't even that embarrassed. Oh, she was blushing, alright, but that meant nothing in a situation like this. She was comfortable in her skin, and if she felt anything about being exposed, it seemed to be just that much more arousal.
"Are you okay?" she asked.
"I...I'm not used to seeing others..."
"Oh. You're, um, new to it?"
"A little," he admitted.
"Ah, I see. I'm sorry; this is probably - do you mind?"
A little, but he shook his head anyway. Tamao smiled, sitting with her knees together and legs under her. Umbreon's eyes glowed, and she reached out with one hand, idly fondling his sheath. She didn't even seem to be aware that she was doing it.
"My master is very eager to share me, sometimes. He likes to show off just what we do when we can. The other dancers don't do this with theirs, but...I couldn't not. He was my partner, my closest friend as an Eevee, and when he grew up, when he became this...well, it just felt right, that first night. And we've been lovers ever since."
"And it's...easy for you?"
"Nothing's ever easy, but that's part of the fun," she said. "I'm still a little embarrassed when he pushes me to do different things, but - mmmph...Yes, master."
She turned, and there was silence for a moment as the Umbreon extended his hind legs. She let him press his paws to her face, rubbing them against her cheeks, and she shivered obviously, noticably. With her rump facing towards Jared and his team, it was impossible to miss the stain spreading along the crotch of her panties, and impossible to miss the way that her thighs trembled and her cheeks twitched.
He did his best not to stare, but he was more surprised than anything as he realized how little it actually did for him. Oh, he was getting hard, no doubt about that, but the way that she was showing off should have given him a raging boner for just how horny she was. The fact was, however, that he had been more turned on with Croccy last night than he was here, and if anything could convince him that he was more attracted to Pokemon than people, this had just done it.
After a few minutes of tending to the Umbreon's paws, including licking the soft pads along the underside, Tamao turned to him again. She was red-faced, panting, and he would just imagine that she was getting off on being 'exposed' like this as much as anything else that was happening. Regardless, she managed a chuckle.
"I...I wanted to ask you back here for a reason..." She took a deep breath. "Sumomo wouldn't allow anyone to walk away with the Surf technique, not without beating the entire team. Most of my fellow performers back her up on this, but...I don't see any reason why you shouldn't be allowed to teach one of your Pokemon the move."
"Just one?"
"Just one," she said. "I know how it is, living a secret life with your team. It's hard enough living with just one, but you...you're living with all six of them, aren't you?"
"...Four, so far," he admitted, glancing at Bright Eyes and Gobbler, thinking of how they hadn't done much yet. He didn't even know either of them as much as he'd like...but that didn't mean that he wasn't interested. "But...open to others."
"You could be a very loving man. I hope that you don't bite off more than you can chew."
"I'll...try."
"Then let me help you. I assume this handsome Croconaw will be the one to learn it?"
"...Why are you helping me?" he asked. "I know that you don't agree with your sister about battling, but -"
"There's less of us than there should be. People that care about their Pokemon, people that see that we can do more than just battle with them. I never like the challenges, but Umbreon...he can take it. He likes fighting, so I don't stand in his way. Not all of them do, and they shouldn't have to just because their trainers think that they should. If I can help you, if I can give you something that lets you keep them from battling all the time just to make some headway in the world...then I want to."
Jared slowly nodded. Glancing down at Croccy, he asked in a glance if the Croconaw was good with learning a new move. Croccy, of course, just grinned and nodded, bouncing from foot to foot.
"Looks like he's good with it."
"Lovely. Now - oh, oh." Tamao shivered. "Master, please, just forgive me...let me do this first, and then - mmmph...Yes, yes, I know...thank you...thank you..."
"Is he, uh..."
"Mmm, he has his desires. Desires that he holds back during the dance, but he insists should be fed as soon as we have time. And he doesn't care if I get seen by someone that won't get us in trouble."
Once more, the mental image of Tamao on her hands and knees getting railed from behind by the dark-furred Eevee-lution popped into his head, and he was more than a little embarrassed to be reminded of how much it turned him on to imagine the Pokemon side of things rather than the human. He really had slipped past what was considered 'normal,' hadn't he?
"Do you need -"
"He agreed to let me do this first. Then...well, I think my rear will be a bit sore for a while."
"Oh."
"He has a very large knot."
"You don't have to describe it."
"Oh? You haven't -"
"Not that far. Not yet."
"Oh. Well...when you do. Make sure that you have a lot of lube...and a lot of time."
"I know we're going to need to prep -"
"Oh, no, it's not for the preparations. It's...well, once you start, you won't want to stop. It feels...very good, and they do it so differently than people. You'll want to keep trying new things, and if it's working for you...well, they're going to have all the stamina that you need."
Jared tried not to think too much on that. He was already dealing with one horny partner, and he knew that once things got going, he would probably be 'indulging' with Shimmer, Lurch, and Snugs a lot more. When he got the chance to get to know Gobbler and Bright Eyes, he might even get some interest in spending more time with them, particularly once they got their boundaries settled. But until then -
"Mmmph...better do this now. Let me - ah - let me get the HM..."
#
They left the theater with Croccy a little lightheaded, but better off than the last time that a team member had learned an HM. If anything, he was bouncy, happy, and overly-excited, even more than usual.
"That was so cool!" the blue-scaled reptile shouted. "I want to try it out. I want to do it right now. I want - I want to do it right -"
"Not yet," Jared said, grabbing him by the shoulder before his Croconaw could run for the nearest source of water.
"Nnnngh, why not?"
"Because we don't have the badge that lets us do it properly yet."
And that one, from what Tamao had said while Umbreon was getting into position to mount her, was given by the local gym. Morty was the gym leader, and if they beat him, then they could use the badge to get around on the water. Properly. Rather than just improvising.
Of course, that meant more battling, but even Tamao had admitted that there were times when one couldn't get away from it. They just had to minimize it as best they could. If he could just do this, he would open up a great deal more possibilities for himself, a great many more avenues for getting around the different trainers of the world that had no interest in anything but the most violent of solutions.
He just had to win.
As they approached the gym, Lurch nudged him, gesturing at his ball. Jared paused, putting the Bellsprout back inside, and - at the request of Gobbler, Bright Eyes, and Snugs - returned them to their balls, too. Only Shimmer and Croccy remained out, and that was fine with him. It was kind of suitable that his flyer and his first partner were the ones that would join him in the gym.
Once he stepped inside, however, he immediately realized that something was wrong. The lights were out, and while there were candles spread through the room, they were unlit, and the trainers standing beside them were half-asleep, leaning back and looking as lazy as could be.
"Uhhhhh..."
"Oh, another challenger."
Jared nearly jumped out of his skin at the stranger's voice. He whipped his head around to see a round-faced, glasses-wearing man, dressed in a white coat that was perhaps a trifle more greasy than was seemly. He took a step back to avoid being touched as the other man held out his hand.
"Are there always people like you at the gyms?" Jared asked.
"Well, yes. We're the Hint-Men."
"...You've got to be kidding me."
"Why would I be?"
"You know what? Never mind." He nodded toward the open floor plan of the gym. "What's going on? Where's the gym leader?"
"Oh, Morty isn't here right now."
"...What do you mean, he isn't here right now?"
"He's off at the Burnt Tower, visiting with a friend. Last I heard, he was planning to go digging for the Legendary Beasts that were said to dwell in it."
Which meant that he wouldn't be battling, which in turn meant that the badge wasn't going to be given out anytime soon, which meant -
He's not surrounded by other trainers...which means that he might be willing to talk this out rather than just fighting for it...
As much as it was taking him off the plotted route, as much as he would have liked to just have the gym done so that he could move on to Olivine, Jared knew that this was a blessing in disguise. As long as he could find Morty before he got back to the gym, there was a chance of getting a badge - and a much-needed badge - without having to fight tooth and nail for it. He could do this without arousing suspicion at cheating the system, and he could do it without any risk for the rest of his team getting hurt.
He just had one question.
"What kind of Pokemon does Morty use?"
"Oh, Ghost-types, obviously."
"...Arceus..."
Well, that was going to make things more complicated, but better that he found out now rather than later. He nodded his thanks, turned on his heel, and walked right back out of the gym. Now that he had a destination in mind, there was no point wasting time.
Turning around from the gym, he could see the remnants of the Burnt Tower standing out against the other in the distance. They loomed over the forest, and the white mists of the morning were still in the process of burning off, making both look more than a little mystical in the distance. He had to admit that, with the wispy nature of the mist and fog all around the city, it made some kind of sense that the gym would be using ghost types.
“Jared?” Croccy asked.
“Hmm?”
“Are you afraid?”
“For once, no. Why?”
“Well…never really done much with ghosts…”
“They’re just another type of Pokemon, big guy. You can handle them. And I’ll be there with you.”
“Hehehe…Right. Thanks.”
