Winding paths of fate Ch.1
A human mage named Will, while returning from one of his missions, encounters a dragon. Will doesn't know yet that this meeting will change his life forever…
Hello! I apologize for any errors in the text, I don't use English on a daily basis, but I preferred to write the story in this language so that more people could see it.
Jade, as always, woke up in her small but cozy den in the secret underground dragon city, where one of the last dragon clan is hiding away from humans. Thanks to their, draconic anatomy, these creatures, could not only faster heal its wounds, but all of their senses were better, they could hear a lot of better that any other animal and with the perfect eyesight, they almost see perfectly in the dark.
Jade looked around, but she couldn't find her beloved mate anywhere.
It's been almost a year since, through her and his carelessness, people kidnapped their children, but they never lost hope of finding them, together they searched for them day and night.
Jade looked towards the exit from their cave and saw something new, near the wall she saw flowers, surprised what these flowers are doing here, she came closer, a short message was left above the flowers:
"I'm going to find our children, I won't rest until I bring them back"
The dragoness perfectly knew who left that message, it was her mate Aurelius, after reading that message, she felt a lot of different emotions at once, anger, sadness, betrayal.
Exactly 12 full moons ago, their kids went missing, they were probably captured by humans, and now she lost another person, her husband.
WHY! Aurelius, I miss them too … but I can't lose you too
She thought and decided to implement a crazy plan…
Jade, Without telling anyone, Jade decided to leave town and go in search of her mate, hoping to find their children as well.
A few hours earlier…
Aurelius woke up and carefully got out from their makeshift bed made from animals hide, he left their den and flew out the town for a couple of hours, he returned with bouquet of flowers and place it beside the wall near the exit of their home, and quietly not to wake up her, on the wall with his claws he wrote a message. He for the last time looked at her and thought:
I am sorry for running like this, my love, but I cannot forgive myself, I must find them.
After for the last time seeing their den, he left the city, and began to searching for their Children. After a few hours the sun come up, and day comes, But Aurelius still soared low to the ground, at this point he didn't care if anyone saw him or not.
The dragon wanted justice for the kidnapping of his two children. After many hours of fruitless searching, the dragon got tired and started looking for a place to rest after a few moments, finally found the perfect place and decided to rest in a clearing under a tree, which was dangerously close to a huge cliff.
The dragon landed, folded its wings, slowly approached the tree, settled down and took a nap, but what the dragon didn't know was that he wasn't alone, a few inches above him, a young boy was sitting on one of the branches of a tree calmly watching the world below him. Will, thanks to the camouflage afforded by the leaves and the height, watched with amazement and fear as the gray dragon landed near a tree and approached him and decided to rest, the boy tried carefully, without making noise, to climb down from the tree, but due to his clumsiness one from the branches he was holding broke with a soft snap.
But it was enough for the dragon's sensitive ears to hear it.
The Gray dragon heard a twig snapped above him and woken up, he deducted that he wasn't alone, someone was hiding on top of the tree, the dragon got scared and hit the tree trunk with his tail, the tree trembled,
the mysterious figure lost its balance and fell, landed in front of the dragon, the dragon calmed down after seeing the person, it reminded him of his own children, it was a young boy with brown hair and green eyes. He was dressed in mages robes.
The boy got up and saw what hit the tree so hard, saw a gray dragon right in front of him, their eyes met.
The boy began to tremble in fear, after a while he back up a few steps and shouted: “D-D-DRAGON!"
The dragon didn't move an inch and was still looking at the boy.
“D-DAD!" Shouted the boy and started backing away faster, still keeping his eyes on the dragon.
"It's okay, little man, I don't want to hurt you," said the dragon and stepped closer to the boy. But no human in history has learned or understood the language of dragons, let alone a little boy, so the boy heard strange growling sounds instead of his real words.
The dragon even shifted to his human form, hoping this will help, but it didn't.
The boy, still trembling with fear, kept backing up, and with every second he came closer and closer to the edge of the cliff.
The dragon in his human form, even extended his hand to him, hoping it would help, but the boy got even more scared, he took another step back and felt that there was no more ground under his feet, and began to lose his balance.
The dragon, seeing this, ran to the boy, wanting to catch him and pull him away from the cliff, but the dragon was too slow, the boy fell down the cliff.
The dragon knelt on the edge of the cliff, he felt terrible, he began to see himself as a monster, he started screaming, because of him his only children were kidnapped, and now because of him a child died, after a few minutes of crying and beating himself he collapsed.
After a while, the half conscious dragon heard footsteps approaching, he slowly got up, turned his head, and saw a man dressed in mage robes.
The man started shouting "WILL!, WILL!, WHERE ARE YOU!?" but no one answered.
The mage, finally, saw a weird looking human, covered in tears.
"You! What have you done to my son!" said the mage, pointing to the standing dragon.
The dragon, being tired, began to go to him, only to be knocked out by a block of ice.
Losing consciousness, the dragon heard these words, "You will pay for what you did to my son!"
After some months…
Will woke up as usual, in the room he shared with his younger brother John. John was no longer in his bed which could only mean one thing, he went to training, Will's brother wanted to become a knight, Will was not amazed by armors or swords, he preferred and wanted to be a mage like his father, Will left the room and went into the dining room.
His family lived deep in the forest, their house was not very big, but they had everything to survive in the forest, a roof under their heads, a lot of space outside, even a garden where they grow crops, and obviously they have each other.
In the dining room his sister Clare and Mom, Emily were cooking soup, Clare was very good at house duties, she always said it was better to live peacefully and boringly than to fight beasts and risk your life because of it, like their mother who was not happy with the paths her sons chose, but didn't want to change their decisions, because she wanted her sons to be happy.
"Hi Will, you're up late today" said his sister worried about him.
"Yesterday I practiced with dad, a little longer than usual" said Will with a smirk on his face.
"We made your favorite soup, it will be ready soon" Will's mom said, and tasted the soup.
“Can you call your brother and father for dinner?" Mother asked Will.
“Ok, mom" He said and left the house.
Will went to the forest, in it, he found his brother and father, his brother was practicing his sword blows in the trees and his father watching him and giving him advices.
Will walked to them and called them for dinner, and All three of them went home.
After Will ate the soup, even though he should remember the taste of it, he didn't remember it at all.
He felt, like was eating it for the first time, a year ago his father told him that, he was wandering confused in the woods and had an accident and after this he forgot everything from 11 years ago.
"Very good soup, I've never had one like that," Will said, getting up from the table.
"You really don't remember, Will? It is your favorite soup, I thought I was the one who forgets quickly" John laughed.
"John, come on, we all know Will had an accident, and he doesn't remember anything from 11 years ago." Said the father, putting down the spoon.
"I know, dad, I am sorry" John said in an apology tone.
Father looked at Will. "Will, wait for me outside, after I've eaten, we'll go to train"
"Okay dad" Will said, and he left the house and went into the woods.
When John and Clare had finished eating, Father sent them to the nearest town to buy some herbs for potions.
His wife Emily went to clean the dishes and say:
"I'm slowly giving up, you know, Will is different" Emily said with sadness.
"Why?" Said worried Arthur, and approached her.
"Why? He can't remember anything before the accident, isn't that weird?" She whispered to him.
"When I found him he was in a terrible state Emily, he almost died, no memories are better than no life, right?"
She looked up his hand and said:
"Yes, but inside I feel that our son is not our son, that he has changed since that accident, that we are now raising someone completely different, someone stranger" She moved down her head and started to cry.
He lifted her chin, their eyes meet, Arthur saw her crying face, gently brush away her tears and softly said to her:
"You don't like that two of our three children will be risking their lives in the future, I get it, I am a little worried too, but the world needs people like them, and under my and then under more experienced training, nothing will threaten them in the future, I promise you"
She weakly smiles. "You're right, I needn't have worried, I'm sorry" Emily said and hugged her husband. Arthur went closer to his wife face, and gently kissed her.
Arthur went outside and went deep into the woods.
Will was waiting for him there, sitting under a tree, already wearing training clothes, and of course he also had a silver necklace with a ruby center.
After the accident, His father gave it to him, as a gift, and after that time Will has always worn it around his neck.
Will was given two rules by his father: he must never remove the necklace, and he must not allow it to be damaged or, worse, destroyed. Will didn't know why he needed to protect that piece of metal so much, but he trusted his father and followed his rules.
Today's lesson started with an unexpected duel, Arthur attacked Will with a barrage of snowballs and Will countered the attack by heating the air in front of him and turning the snowballs into water, Will immediately attacked he reached out and launched a hail of ice shards, Will's father jumped aside only to be trapped between a tree and a wall of ice.
"Alright son you won this time" Will's father coughed trying to free himself, but couldn't use magic without hurting himself.
Will put his hands on the wall of ice and began to melt it, after a few seconds the wall turned into water.
Since the time of accident, Will began to fascinate about magic, so he told his father about it, and after a lot of asking and begging his father finally agreed to teach him a few spells, Will mastered them easily, so he again started to asking, and soon his father, taught him basically almost everything he knew about magic, and sometimes they even had duels, like sometimes a real mages would do.
"You're stronger than I was at your age" Said the father proudly and smiles.
"Thanks dad, what are we going to practice today?" Will asked impatiently, and without a single drop of sweat, created a large fireball.
His father, seeing the fireball, quickly creates and sends a flow of water, and extinguishing it.
“Brace yourself! Because I am ready for round two!" The father shouted in the direction of his son as he sent out a wind gust.
After a few hours, Will and his father left the woods and went home exhausted from their training.
***
The next 2 years passed peacefully, Will, thanks to his father learned almost every kind of magic, he was the best at magic of the elements, but no matter how he tried, he couldn't master the healing magic. His father kept telling him that one day he would learn it too.
Will insisted that he wanted to study in a distant mage clan in the west. After many trials and persuasions, his mother finally agreed that Will would leave the family home and go to study magic further.
John followed in his brother's footsteps and went to learn to be a knight.
Both brothers wanted to help people in the future, their mother, father, and sister remained in the depths of the forest in their peaceful house away from people and troubles.
***
Will was very good at magic, was always praised by his teachers, because of his excellent scores, Will didn't have many friends except for Jim, the complete opposite of him, who wasn't very good at magic at all, and only learns it because the family forced him to, they were both mocked every day…
John, on the other hand, was doing great, thanks to his father's training, he was better prepared than the rest of the people at his age, he took part in many duels and never lost a single one, he was liked and had many friends, his teachers told him that when he finished school, they would notify whom it is necessary, and John will get a good job as a knight and maybe even as commander in the king's Royal Army.
12 years Later…
Will, now 24 years old, was returning alone from a mission, it was night, after exploring the ruins and recovering an ancient artifact, For Will, this mission was trivial, but he took it because he wanted to break out of the guild, Will had no one to talk to, his only friend Jim died a few years ago on a mission, because Will wasn't careful enough to watch their back, Will still hasn't stopped blaming himself for that.
Also, another thing makes him sad, that he had not heard any news from his family for so many years, the only thing he knew was that John became a knight and his family was doing well, the mage clan also did not allow him to visit his own family as they deemed it unnecessary, instead sending him to help teach new magicians to distract him from his homesickness.
Meanwhile, not far away in the sky…
Jade flew like every evening, unsuccessfully searching for her missing husband and children.
It's been exactly 168 full moon cycles since our children disappeared, and 156 cycles since you disappeared, my Aurelius, it's so hard without you Thought Jade, and tears started flowing down her scaly checks.
Jade, flying her usual route, but this time she saw something new, in the depths of the forest, she saw a fire.
I've never seen a camp, that deep in the forest, that person must be really brave or stupid, after all, at night the forest is prowled by ...
With her perfect eyesight, Jade saw a pack of wolves surrounding the camp.
Wolves … I shouldn't interfere, but after all these years, I don't care anymore
Jade landed a few trees behind the light source and hid behind the trees, she saw a man dressed in a strange robe, without any weapons, the man was casually leaning against a tree and staring at the fire.
Suddenly, they both heard a whimper in the distance, the wolves rushed at the man.
Jade pushed back several wolves that surrounded her and rushed to the man to help him, surprisingly the human was doing fine on his own, throwing fireballs and ice blocks and shards that formed straight from his hands.
Jade, seeing that, smiled and thought:
So, He's a mage, maybe he or his clan will know where to look.
With this new sparkle of hope, Jade quietly approached the wizard, who stood a few meters away from her, highly focused of defending himself from the wild wolves.
After a few throws, he finally saw her, his reaction was really easy to predict.
"D-DRAGON!" Shouted the mage when he finally saw her.
Will was more terrified of the dragon that the wolves, he never saw a real dragon before, only he heard about them, he was almost sure that their species went extinct, but now … he really saw one with his own eyes, probably most people in will's place would run away in a panic, but Will, thanks to his father's training, was prepared for everything, If this creature tries to harm him, then he with his magic can easily defend himself from it or scare it away.
"Calm down, human, I'm here to help you" the dragon calmly said.
Will by the tone of voice he had assumed it was a female, after a few moments he regained his ability to speak and said to her:
"Calm down?! You're a dragon, I thought that dragons went extinct!"
The dragoness hearing that, looked around hoping to see another dragon, but she didn't saw any, so, that meant, that this human really understood what she said a moment ago. After a standing in place, still in shock, she managed to say:
"C-Can you understand me?!"
The mage looked at her and said:
"Yeah, what's so strange about that? And continued to defend himself from the attack of the wolves.
"Not a single human has ever been able to understand me or anyone of my species"
"Interesting, maybe we'll talk about this later!" Said the slightly panting mage, still defending himself from the attack.
"Oh yes, wolves" said the dragoness and used her tail to beat up several wolves.
They dealt with a few more, the last one was left, the dragon swung her tail and knocked down the last wolf but also hit the mage who flew a few meters and hit his back against a tree, falling limply to the ground.
Will's vision began to blur and the last thing he saw was the dragon standing above him, and after that everything went black…
Will woke up in a dark cave, his whole body ached, he got up and make a few sparks from his hand to illuminate the cave, he looked around, he was really surprised when he looked down, next to him was a woman wearing a blue tunic.
Will kneel next to her and gently woke her up, the woman woke up, at first was slightly scared, but after a few seconds she calmed down.
"Hey what happened, where are we?, who are you?" Will said to the woman.
"I found you in the woods, you have passed out," the woman said as she stood up.
“I passed out? The last thing I saw, was a … dragon, Dragon! Where is it?" Nervously said Will and looked around the cave.
"Dragon? Where? I haven't seen any, everyone knows dragons are long gone. The woman lied.
“B-But I really saw one! It had 4 legs, scales, wings and…" Will didn't finish his sentence because he was distracted by a girl who put her hand on his forehead and said:
“Calm down … maybe you hit your head so hard that you saw a hallucination, dragons don't exist" She said and smiles mockingly.
"Perhaps we'd better get out of this cave, it's a bit dark in here, and I don't have the strength to light this place any longer" After he said this, his magic light vanish.
"Right, let's get some fresh air," said the Woman, and helped Will out of the cave.
They both left the cave and sat under the shade of a tree.
"So who are you, what's your name?" Will asked mystery woman.
"You don't remember me? I'm your friend, my name is Julie"
Said the woman and after that she entered Will's mind, searching through his memories, finding some information about his life.
She was surprised but pleased that Will didn't sense that she was searching through his memories.
"Did I know you?" Said Will looking deeply in her eyes trying to remember her.
"I'm your old childhood friend, we used to play as kids, don't you remember?
"No, I don't remember" He said, and grabs his necklace, through his clothes.
"I'm sorry, Will, you lost so many memories after that accident" she said and placed her hand on his left shoulder.
"How did you know about the accident?!" Said Will with wide eyes.
"Your father told me" Julie lied and ran her hand down his arm and finally took it off.
"Okay, if you don't mind, I must go to the guild to return the artifact" Will said, opened the bag and showed it content.
"I'll help you" She said to him and smiles.
"No need, I'm fine on my own, like always" Will got up and created two fireballs from his hands, but moments later he swayed and nearly fell.
Julie held him up and said, "Not in this state, I'm coming with you whether you like it or not."
She patted him on the shoulder and asked "In what direction should we go?"
Will hesitated for a moment, then pointed north, and the two slowly made their way to the Mages Guild.
