Part 10e: Tokyo, Japan (Cat & Crypto, Part 2)

As they neared the exit to the tarmac, a woman stepped out of the shadows, falling into step behind them, just slightly. “About time you got back to the plane, Catriona,” she said, her completely black eyes taking in everything around them, from behind her dark sunglasses, and the bags that both were carrying. Looking at Crypto, she tilted her head, then nodded. The look said ‘I know what you did before you met Cat, but I think you’ll be good for her. Hurt her and die.’ “I’m Marketta.”

Crypto didn’t jump, because he felt more than saw the person come up behind them, and he knew that it just had to be ‘Marketta’, whom Cat was just talking about. He did glance back though and check her over quickly, his eyes flicking from top to bottom and then locking onto the woman’s black, sunglasses-covered eyes and nodding. “Crypto,” he said. “Pleased to meet you.” And left it at that for the time being. They were almost to the plane with their food and bags from shopping. They headed out the doors that led directly to the Tarmac and saw Chameleon and Isabella and two unknown Japanese men, talking with Radar and hanging around the stairs up into the plane. Crypto’s hand around Cat’s waist tightened a little, a protective instinct, because he knew how nervous she was going to get.

Marketta moved to walk in front of Cat, her protective mode kicking into gear as they neared the unknowns at the plane. To her, all of them were unknown, except Radar, and he seemed a bit tense. Cat tensed as she saw the two Japanese males, and her step faltered briefly as she fought her fears. She turned to Crypto and stopped him, lifting her eyes to his. Her fear was evident, as was her determination to get past her issues. But looking into his eyes centered her, and she stretched up on her toes kissing him on the lips before turning to face the group waiting for them.

Shui tapped Taro on the shoulder and gestured toward the three of them as they walked toward the plane. The older male turned and Demyan noticed them as well, particularly Marketta. He knew instantly who she must be, the bodyguard that Cat had talked about, though how she could have possible gotten here so fast was anyone’s guess. “Here they come now,” he said to Taro. “Let me do the talking. The younger woman is the owner, but she’s a very, very private person and prefers to speak to those she knows.” He was trying to keep everything easy for everyone, and speaking of Cat like that was easier than saying anything about her problems.

Crypto kissed Cat back when she kissed him. She needed his reassurance, and he didn’t fuckin care that he was kissing her right in the middle of the tarmac. Once that was done though, they followed Marketta closer to the group. Crypto told her, “The man and woman in the middle are friendlies. I don’t know the other two, but it looks like they might be as well…”

Marketta gave a short nod in response to Crypto’s words, her attention going to the two Japanese men. Keeping her voice low, she gave some bad news of her own. “Before I left, Michel got a call from his wife. Astrid was taken. Katja started her shit again. After Ciara and Mouse are safe, we need to find Star and get her home safe, though with Katja involved, I think both kidnappings are connected. We find one, we find all.”

Cat growled under her breath, fury rising in her eyes as she heard that. “How the fuck did that bitch get to Astrid? Ace hasn't heard, has she?” Katja was becoming a larger thorn in her side with each passing day and she needed to do something about her fast. Before the bitch took her grandfather's business down. “I can only hope this is connected and we get everyone back safely and at the same time.”

Crypto got cold again, feeling his own anger rising. Cat seemed to burn with fire through her words when she got angry, but Crypto, he turned icy cold, like stone. Each time Katja was mentioned, it seemed she had concocted some new horror for Cat’s family and friends and that had to stop. He would make sure of it. Marketta shook her head, “No, Ace hasn’t heard. I thought it best to speak to her in person.”

They were approaching the plane now and Demyan stepped forward, glancing around the bodyguard to look at Cat and Crypto for a second, then back at her. “You must be Marketta,” he stated. “I’m Demyan, and this is my wife Isabella. And this is Taro, he’s a detective with the Tokyo Police. I’ve worked with him many times in the past. Shui…” he motioned to the other male. “...Is with him. They can be trusted.” He looked for Cat again. “They have orders to search every plane on the Tarmac. Someone of great importance has gone missing and they are afraid he may be smuggled out. We need your permission though.”

“What is it with people kidnapping others? My twin and baby brother 10 years ago. My best friend earlier tonight, which I just heard about. And now this young man here,” Cat said softly. She saw Radar start at her words and gave him a look with a short shake of her head. “I have no problem with them searching the plane, but we are on a bit of a time crunch.” Her eyes never left Demyan, but her hand had tightened its grip on Crypto’s. “I need to speak to Ace about Star,” she said, turning to Crypto.

Demyan nodded and turned to Taro, “You have her permission, my friend.” Glancing toward Radar, he jerked his head toward the rear of the plane, “If you could have Ace open the cargo doors we’ll start there…” He figured it would be best to get that part of the search done with ASAP, and that would give Cat a moment to get in the plane and get settled in before they invaded her personal space again.

Crypto waited for Chameleon and the two Japanese men to move off toward the rear of the plane, and he headed for the stairs with Cat. Marketta preceded them, mounting the stairs and then pausing at the top near the entrance door for them to come up. She entered ahead of them, but froze, her eyes narrowing when she saw the rest of the group gathered about here and there. Ace popped her head out of the cabin as Crypto and Cat gained the top of the stairs and headed into the plane as well. “What the fuck is going on around here?” she asked, shaking her head. “Never had the police wanting to search any of our planes before.”

Cat looked at Ace, her face still showing her shock at the news Marketta had given them as they crossed the tarmac. “Ace, she got Star,” she said, her voice trembling with the tears she was just barely holding back. “It has to be connected to Ciara and Mouse. She couldn’t take her then, so she bided her time and did it now.” Collapsing into a chair, she stared into the nothing, trying to fight the retreat her mind wanted to do from the shock. “The police are searching every plane. Not just ours. Chameleon is showing the detective friend of his that we aren’t smuggling anyone out of Japan.” She sensed Marketta sizing everyone up and without turning to look at her or anyone else, she said, “Marketta, these are friends, helping me get Ciara and Mouse back. They aren’t going to attack me, or threaten me.”

Ace blinked a few times, comprehending the news she had just received. She had seen the other young woman a day ago, and now...kidnapped? She blinked again and her eyes narrowed. She glanced at Marketta, and then at Cat. “Ice Bitch struck again. I’ll tear her throat out,” she said, then disappeared back into the cockpit, slamming the door behind her, hard. Marketta glanced at Cat, “I believe you, darling...but I don’t have to trust them, yet.” She paused, seeing Cat shutting down. “You...Crypto… Take her into the bedroom. She needs to rest.”

He had taken up position right beside his girlfriend and put an arm around her shoulder. Hearing Marketta’s ‘suggestion’, he nodded and gave Cat a little tug upright. “Come on, Kitten,” he whispered, so low that only she could hear, and perhaps Marketta, too. “You need to lay down for a minute.”

Cat rose at Crypto’s gentle tugging and slid her arm around his waist. Tara watched them leave the main cabin, wanting to help Cat, but knowing now wasn't the time to bring it up. But Cat’s words as she exited the main cabin hung heavy in the air. “What did I do to Katja to have her keep doing these things to me?” In the bedroom, she laid on the bed, pulling Crypto down with her and curling up against his side, her head on his shoulder. “Seriously, what did I ever do? I was happy as a child, and she took my twin and baby brother and killed my parents. Now, she's taken the person I was closest to for four years. Star and Ace got close when Star started her flying lessons, and Marketta had trained both of us in defense, but the bitch still got Star. Why me? Why my family? Why my friends?”

Crypto wanted to cry with her, but the tears wouldn’t come. He was too angry at Katja to cry, even if he felt like his own soul was hurting with Cat. He sank down to the bed when she tugged on him, and leaned his back into the pillows. She fit herself beside him and curled up, his arm around her shoulders squeezing her tightly. “You didn’t do anything, Kitten. Sometimes there is no explaining how evil someone is, how much they care only about themselves and about their own power. Sometimes some people just want to put everyone else beneath them, and I guess your family stood in the way of her.” He turned his head and kissed Cat on the forehead. “But we’ll stop her...we must.”

Cat nodded, holding tight to Crypto, then steeled herself. “I’m not giving up until the bitch is gone. I’ll make sure her reputation is destroyed and she can’t even get a job as a two-bit hooker! It might take a minute for me to process everything and push past the shock, but I’m not gonna let the bitch get away with this!” Lifting her head, she angled away from Crypto for a moment. “MARKETTA!” she called, then snuggled down with him again.

The other woman came in, leaning against the wall by the door. “What’s up, darling?” She noticed that Cat wasn’t in such a state of shock as she had been, but she knew about the issues the younger woman had with people in general.

Cat looked up at her, making a possibly rash decision, but knowing it needed to be done. “I think that detective is coming on board with Chameleon. We need to get this plane cleared for takeoff as quickly as possible, so let him know we’re on a rescue mission. And about Star’s kidnapping. They can put eyes out here in case she’s brought this way. We know where Mouse is being held, and hopefully Ciara’s still with him, but just in case, let him know about her as well. She should look like me. Though she might have been disguised with a different hair color. I’m going to stay back here until they leave, though. I’ve had my fill of strangers around me today. And tell Tara… Dr Ellison… that I’ll be fine. Just overwhelmed with too many people in the airport, and the news.”

Marketta smirked and nodded. “I will. You rest, darling.” Anything else she was about to say was interrupted when Cat exclaimed, “And take off those damn sunglasses around me, Marketta. Your eyes are cool, not scary. To me, at least!” Marketta sighed and slid down her glasses, looking at Cat from over them, revealing her nearly completely black eyes with just a tinge of red to them over the bottom half of the iris. Cat smiled up at her and nodded. “Much better. You know that I knew that when you looked at me, things would be taken care of. And now, we have more to help with taking care of these things.”

Crypto remained silent while she spoke with Marketta, thinking and musing in his own head about Katja and also glancing around the rather opulent cabin they found themselves in. This was just the kind of thing he would have expected from a private luxury jet, and this wasn’t exactly new to him. He had been on a few before, a long while ago when he worked for the government. Since starting his private contracting though, there really wasn’t much use for him to be on one, and certainly not with a woman as pretty as Cat was...or with his whole team.

Once Marketta had finally left the cabin, he turned to Cat a bit and kissed her head again. “You and Marketta must be really close. Back there when we met her, she looked like she would kill me if I so much as accidentally tugged one hair on your head too hard.”

Cat snuggled against him, her head on his shoulder again as she just absorbed the peace she felt with him. “Michel hired her after everything that happened. Specifically to make sure nothing happened to me. After all, I was all that was left of my family. Before I met Marketta, I knew how to throw knives and stars, but she taught me to perfect my throw and aim. Since I was living with Michel and his family, Marketta lived with us too. She taught Star self defense, as she did me, though I didn’t want to touch anyone by this point. I was scared that it was anyone I touched was getting hurt. Gotta love ten year old logic,” she chuckled wryly.

“Ahh….” he trailed off. “I bet ten year old you was pretty damn cute.” He chuckled and kissed her forehead, then went back to the subject of her bodyguard.

“So what’s with her eyes?” he asked, smirking a little bit. “They look pretty cool… I could see some people wanting to buy contacts that would make their eyes look like that, but I assume hers are natural.” He squeezed around her shoulders and back, keeping her close as she snuggled. “I noticed this plane has a mini-bar over there.” He nodded his head toward it on the far side of the cabin. “Want me to make you a drink or something? Help calm the nerves?”

“I like to say I was, but I don't have any pictures of me back then. I think Michel has some of me and Star back then. I know he took one of us before everything. And he stopped all pictures of me that the paparazzi took after we found out from being published. He sued each one for the photographs and negatives, preventing them from being published anywhere. Most he burned, but I know he has one from those. From the funeral. He said he couldn't wait to see the look of agony gone from my eyes. But the cops never found any trace and stopped looking.” She shook her head and tried to shake off her melancholy at the same time.

“Anyway, Marketta’s eyes are natural. She looks human, other than her eyes and the marking on her forehead. She's half demon, but those are the only things that mark her demonic heritage. She does everything to hide them, cause it freaked folks out when she was younger. But that was longer ago than you’d imagine. Unfortunately, it's made her wary of showing her eyes. Especially to those she doesn't know. Her glasses were back on before she stepped from this room. And I know you’ve been wondering how she got here so close to when we did, since I didn't talk to Michel until after we were in the air. She's a shadow rider. She can move between places in minutes, so long as there are shadows she can enter or exit.”

She looked over at the mini bar and shrugged. “I’ve never had any, so I don't know what I like. Surprise me?”

“Ahhh. I see. Like I said, her eyes are cool, but I can see how some people would find them pretty terrifying.” He gave her a little squeeze and then released her from his grip, rolling out of the bed and moving to the minibar. “I’m no bartender myself, but I’ll make you up something light…” he said, opening the doors of the cabinet and starting to clink his way through the glass bottles that lined the internal shelves. He pulled out two glasses and thought for a moment, then selected a very lightly alcoholic drink, and poured it into both glasses. “If we were at home I’d just crack open an ice cold beer. Half the stuff in here would cost more than even I make in a year,” he laughed.

The bottle Crypto picked up had a label that read Amadeus Liqueur. It was a light amber brown liquid that had been imported from Austria. Next to it on the shelf was a bottle of Mozart Liqueur. “I don’t think Michel drinks a lot of it, but he does invest in the best liqueurs and spirits for when he’s entertaining clients in the jet. But we can taste test some of it and see if he should keep it in stock or drop it,” she giggled, moving to sit up in the bed, scooting back on it to lean against the wall of the suite.

“Good plan. He had better be keeping stuff in here that lives up to your standards. Only the best for my girl,” he said, and meant it. He poured some of the Amadeus into both glasses and lifted them, moving back to the bed and extending her the one in his left hand. Once she had taken it, he slipped back onto the comforter beside her and put his back to the wall as well. Reaching over, he clinked his glass to hers, “Cheers, Kitten.”

“Cheers, Jasmir,” she replied as their glasses clinked together. She took a small sip and let it linger for a moment, then swallowed. “Very… almondy. If someone’s not a fan of almonds, I wouldn’t recommend this one to them. But I find the nutty flavor wonderful,” she said, taking another sip of her drink. Pulling her phone out, she searched the brand and read up on it. “Looks like it was named after the famous composer, Amadeus Mozart. And a bottle of this isn’t that expensive. It runs about twenty a bottle. I’d say keep it. What do you think?”

“Hmmm,” he said, sipping it as well and nodding. “I prefer other nuts, really… Peanuts and walnuts are my favorite, but almonds are ok.” He drake a little more and then said, “Yes, I can see why some would like this alot. I think it’s a good choice to keep.” He paused for a moment. “Not sure that Mozart would have drank it though. He was a pretty badass dude. Light and almondy never quite fit what I thought of his music,” he laughed.

“Maybe we should try another one, after we finish this off, of course,” she suggested, having seen a green bottle near the chosen one on the wall. She pointed to it and grinned. “Maybe that one? It looks interesting. And expensive.” She made a mental note of his preferred nuts and knew she’d have plenty in the house for him. “I guess I never really thought what nuts I like best. I’ve liked all the ones I’ve had. Brazil nuts, hazelnuts, cashews, peanuts, almonds, walnuts, pecans. But some of them can be hard to crack open.”

He nodded and lifted the Amadeus in his glass again, sipping some more, swallowing, and finishing the glass. “Oh, I’m not too picky, just have my favorites,” he grinned. “Got to get a good nutcracker for lots of them. I remember my mom always buying these big bags of nuts around Christmas time. She would pour them in this special bowl that used to be grandma’s, and it had a spot in the center for a nutcracker. My sister and I would eat them the entire holiday season.” He found himself chuckling a little bit again.

She finished her glass, then got up to grab the green liquid and two clean glasses. She poured some into each, then headed back to the bed. “Let’s see what this one’s like,” she said, taking a sip of hers. Her eyes widened and a soft moan slipped from her as the taste exploded onto her tongue. Herbal flavors that had been combined into one wonderful taste. She swallowed and smiled at him. “This one. I have to keep this one in stock at home.”

He stayed on the bed this time and let her bring him the glass. His fingers took it and he thought for a moment how silly he felt to be touching something so obviously meant for those of ‘higher class’ than he. But he had bumped shoulders with enough ‘elites’ to not feel too strangely. He took a taste, larger than hers, and his eyebrows rose, for the cacophony of flavors that assaulted his tongue was not at all unpleasant. It was probably what some wine connoisseur would describe as being ‘full bodied and flavorful’, but he just thought it tasted good, “Mnn. Have to have Michel send some over from the private stock?”

“Definitely. But I don’t think we need to get drunk tonight, even though we’re not doing much other than flying to get there. One more glass, and then I should be good to face everyone again.” She pulled out her phone and flipped to an older picture of Star. “This is the newest missing person. My best friend, Star. Well, one of them. But my damn phobias had me pulling away from even them.” The photo showed a young girl in neko form with black hair and chartreuse eyes. “Michel created a little something to help her control her forms, since she didn’t take this one until after puberty. But in either form, her eyes go red when she’s royally pissed. And to calm down from that stage, she needs lots of sweets.”

Crypto glanced over at the phone as she held it up with the photo of Star on it. He nodded, quirking an eyebrow,.“Cute…” he grinned, “Not as cute as you, of course. And she can shift from human to Neko and back again. We’ll assume she’s in Neko form, then, since I doubt she would calm down from being pissed at being kidnapped, right?” He drank down what was left in his glass and put it to the side for a moment. Pulling out his own phone, he held it beside hers and tapped a few things, initiating an image transfer from device to device. Circa’s icon popped up in the corner of his phone and he drug the photo to it. A small text notification appeared to acknowledge her receiving it, and then he put the phone down. “One more glass then… let’s see what’s over here.” He pushed to his feet once more.

“Well, the eyes are her tell, and that can happen in either form. But she is in more control of her forms, so she might be in human, but she could be in neko. If Katja told the kidnappers about her form shifting, they might have forced her into her neko form and done something to inhibit her changing back again,” she said, watching as he sent the image to Circa, then leaning back against the wall as he got up to find something else for them to try.

Crypto nodded. “I’ve seen neko girls go for many millions of dollars on the black market auctions. It’s fuckin horrible when I come across something and it’s too late to stop it. But that’s why we’re here now, isn’t it?” he mused, as he browsed the various other bottles. On a separate shelf from the rest were two black bottles. “Hmmm - this stuff looks exclusive. Ghost Horse? Or Screaming Eagle?”

Cat tilted her head as he read off the names of the bottles. “Hmm. My gut say since we’re doing a covert rescue mission… Ghost Horse. We’ll do the Screaming Eagle when we celebrate victory, I think,” she replied. Rescuing women and children from traffickers was harder work than she anticipated, and she apparently needed this downtime with him before the next leg of the trip.

“Don’t know why we didn’t think to bring along a few packs of beer from home,” he said with a smirk as he pulled the Ghost Horse wine off of the shelf. Everything about the black bottle with laser-etched figure of a horse screamed high-class, and he hoped that Michel didn’t mind them sharing some of it. At the bottom was the word ‘Fantome’. He peeled back the wrapper and stuck a corkscrew into the top, then worked it loose. It popped open and fizzed and he sniffed it. “Well, I’m no connoisseur of wine, but this smells about as expensive as it probably is.” He poured his glass, then came over to the bed and poured hers, finally re-corking the bottle and putting it back. He sipped it a little and let the flavor fill his mouth. “Wow…”

Cat took a sip of her glass and let the flavor sit on her tongue for a moment, the fruity taste filtering through her, along with the faint hint of oak, which must have been the casks the wine had aged in. Swallowing her sip, she gave a delicate shudder. “It’s good, but I don’t think I’m a wine person. It didn’t go down as smoothly as the others. I think I’ll stick to the Chartreuse. It went down smoother for me.” She lay her head on his shoulder, lifting her face to kiss his jaw softly. “Thank you for everything today, Jasmir. I had fun shopping with you, even though my phobias kicked in a time or two.”

He sipped more of the wine and then when he had finally finished it he decided he was done with it as well. He put his glass to the side and smiled as he felt her soft lips kissing his jaw. “Phobias? What phobias?” Crypto said with a smile, turning to her. “When I look at you, when I’m with you, I don’t even notice them. I mean, I do and I want to help you through them, but you are not your phobias to me, Kitten.” He kissed her on the lips, lingering there for a moment and then pulling back with a little sigh. “I can’t wait for this all to be over. Your siblings and your friend back safe and sound. I enjoy the excitement, I love working in the field with my tech and getting hands on. But at the same time I just want to relax and hold you and just...do...everything that I’ve wanted to do since the first time we spoke, since the first time we met….yesterday,” he laughed.

Cat kissed him back, a soft kitten-like purr of contentment slipping from her. “Well, we did jump the international date line, so officially, we met, in person, two days ago. But I felt that connection since the first time we spoke on the darkweb.” She took a breath, and gave him a nod. “I think I can handle going back out there now. We are going to get everyone back, and Katja is going to pay,” she said. The only thing she hoped for was that she wasn’t needed for the search or anything like that. She had enough of strangers around her for the day. The team, though… they’d become a family to her in a short time, dropping what they did daily just to help her get her brother and twin back, and now, Star.

Jason nodded and sat up away from her, easing out of bed but letting his fingers run down her arm to her hand. He gently tugged her after him until she was once again standing beside him. “Good, we’ll get you back out there and soon enough we’ll be on our way. Won’t be long before we touch down and it’s a flurry of activity. Just think… within 48 or 72 hours, we could all be flying back home.” He squeezed her hand and moved toward the door out of the suite and back into the main cabin.

Cat nodded at his words, hoping that things would go their way. But she had a strange sense of foreboding that said things were going to follow Murphy’s Law - ‘if it can go wrong, it will’. Her fingers twined with his as she moved to stand next to him, giving his hand a gentle squeeze before she slid under his arm, hers going around his waist, their hands having to detangle, though her hand slid into his back pocket as she leaned against him. “Let’s do this.”
