As soon as we reached the hangar we could hear someone crying. I followed the sound to my office where Rin was hiding under my desk. "Rin, what's wrong?"

"My parents disowned me. My own father told me that I brought shame to our family." She cried.

"Computer, pause current game and shift scenery to our quarters." Shock ordered.

"The game has been paused."

I helped Rin up onto the couch, "Why did they say such a thing?" I asked.

"Because I asked for permission to attend the space station school. He said we couldn't afford something like that and I'd never have a chance to get in, since only the top students are being offered the chance. Then I told him that I'd already been offered a place." Rin sobbed, "That's when he lost it. He accused me of horrible things like prostituting myself to furrys. He actually physically pushed me out of the apartment. All I have is my school books and my VR gear. I- I didn't think the gear would still work the way he threw it on the ground. I’m glad it does, I’d rather pretend to be here instead of hiding in the alley behind my ho-home."

"Captain, I'm changing the scene." Mahan announced.

Rin gasped. We were in a dark alleyway looking at a man in a black suit standing over a young girl in a full immersion VR suit, huddled next to some steps.

"Rin, my name is Mahan. I'm the artificial intelligence of this ship. I'm also controlling the drone you see standing guard next to you. I want you to reach out and take my hand. I have a car waiting at the end of the alley. I have a safe place set up for you."

"Prowl-Ar?" Rin asked.

"Don't be scared, Mahan will protect you. Log out and go with him. Everything will seem a bit better after a good meal, a long bath, and a night's sleep. I'll see you in the morning."

Rin nodded and her avatar disappeared.

"Keep the simulation going, Mahan transition to telepresence."

"The drone is already at Rin's parent's door. Drones for Kyle and Shock are on their way."

"Log me in." I blinked and the door was in front of me. I knocked and waited. The door opened and I pushed my way in.

"Who do you think you are?" Rin’s father demanded.

"I have come for Hatori Rin's belongings." I stated coldly.

"You have no right-" her mother started.

"No, I don't, but by morning I will. From this moment forward Rin is under the protection of the Shadow Runners. I am here for her computer, books, model kits, clothes and anything else she may want to keep." One doorway was highlighted meaning it must be Rin’s. I walked in and opened the closet. I was surprised to find several kigu of popular characters and hidden with them was one that even I could tell was custom made. Rin might just be a bit more furry than she let on. There was another knock at the door.

"That's the police. They'll deal with you." Mr. Hatori said as he left the room.

"Mahan?" I asked.

"Don't worry about it. The police have not actually been contacted. That is your back up. You don't have any boxes so I made sure they have what you need."

I was surprised when Kyle, Shock, and Frost entered with transport crates. I hadn’t expected Frost to be with them or the fact that their drones mimicked their actual look. Kyle pulled out a handful of papers. "Mahan said you would want this."

I glanced over them and smiled. "Strip it.” I gestured around the room. “Everything goes except for the bed, desk, dresser, and curtains. Mahan, make sure we don't overlook anything."

I returned to the main room where Mr. Hatori was standing with the door open. Presumably waiting for the police.

"If you’re waiting for the police, they're not coming. Now sign these."

"What are those?" Mrs. Hatori asked.

"This one details placing Hatori Rin directly into my care. Next is termination of parental rights. This one is your word of honor that you will not attempt to contact Rin in any form from this moment forward. However If she wants to reestablish contact with you in the future she retains that right." I explained.

"What about what we are owed? What about the shame she has brought to our family name?" Mr. Hatori demanded.

"You have shamed yourself. Perhaps you don't understand, only a select few will ever come under my direct care."

"You still haven't answered my question about who you are." He demanded.

"Prowl-Ar Nightiger, Captain of the Shadow Runner, Lord of Clan Lightstripe, Owner of Furry Station One."

Mrs. Hatori gasped.

"We've got everything packed we just need to carry it out." Shock said, as he and Frost lugged cases through followed shortly by Kyle.

"How many more?" I yelled.

"Two, plus anything out here." Kyle answered.

"What if we refuse to sign?" Mrs. Hatori asked.

I shrugged, I turned the paper around and let Mahan take partial control of the drone body. He signed both of their names on the termination of parental rights before returning control to me. "Then I sign for you in your hand writing. Don't bother denying that you signed it. This signature is identical in every way to your own hand. I pray that eventually you come to realize the true value of what you have so callously thrown away this evening." I let Mahan finish signing the documents. Once back in full control I followed Shock and Kyle out as they retrieved the last two cases.

As the shuttle approached the helicopter pad on top of a building it spiraled open revealing a shuttle landing bay. I landed waiting for the roof to close before shutting down the cloak each of us lifted a crate as Mahan walked up the ramp.

"Rin is currently taking a bath. She insisted on washing before eating. I am monitoring to be sure she isn't suicidal." He picked up the final case and led us to the freight elevator. We descended four floors in silence and entered a large apartment.

"I took the liberty of placing her in your apartment."

"This is where I stayed when I visited Japan. The park, I got caught in, is just down the street." Kyle said in surprise.

"Mahan, can a second shuttle fit in the hangar?" I asked.

"Of course."

"Log us out and put away our drones." There was a slight sense of vertigo as the simulation shut down. "Kyle, can you come up with something for dinner that Rin might find comforting?"

"No problem."

I headed for the door waving for the others to follow me "Time is short so give Mahan a list of ingredients you need."

"Mahan, do you think you'll be able to send a drone to do some shopping?"

"It might be difficult to find fresh ingredients this late in the day but I'll do my best."

"Frost, do you know Japanese?"

"Yeah. I did a memory download when I got frustrated that some of your movies didn't have an English translation."

"That should make things easier."

The lift seemed to be moving slower than normal. “Shock, are you ready to put your diplomatic skills to use?"

"I can hardly wait, but what if this isn't what Rin wants?"

"Then we'll do everything we can to change our plans to be in line with what she wants." I replied.

"So we're her parents now?" Kyle asked.

The lift doors opened and I stood there staring into the launch bay.

"Oh, way to go, you broke our Tiger." Shock said, waving his hand in front of my face.

"I- I didn't think things through, did I?"

Frost took my hand and pulled me toward the shuttle. "Dad, you saw someone in need and you immediately wanted to help them. Shouldn't we do that when we can?"

I ruffled Frosts hair. "You're right. I just hope you're not going to get upset that you now have a sister."

"Why would I be upset? It's not like you're going to love me any less. Sure I've seen how others are, but I've always been alone so I know what that is like. If Rin is feeling that emptiness then you have to make it go away, like you did for me."

"Son, I keep forgetting just how old you really are."

"Nu uh, I'm not even a year old yet." Frost stuck out his tongue and ran for the shuttle.

"Now, I wonder who he gets that from?" Shock asked.

Kyle and I looked at each other, then both of us pointed at Shock and simultaneously said "you".

***

"Mahan? Are you cooking something?" Rin asked, as she entered the room.

I set down the video game controller allowing Frost to easily kill my fighter.

"Sorry, Mahan is busy at the moment. Besides I'm a much better chef." Kyle replied.

"Captain Drake?"

"Please, when we're not in the game, call me Kyle."

"What is going on?" Rin asked.

"We, uh, had words with your parents about their disowning you."

"Prowl-Ar!"

I nodded.

"Fox?" Rin asked, looking at Shock.

"When I'm in my human form you can call me Kelly, but Shock is fine as well."

"And you are?"

Frost put his controller down. "We haven't met in the game yet. I'm Russell Nightiger, though everybody calls me Frost."

"You're real? I thought you were an NPC. Oh, I'm so sorry, please forgive my rudeness."

"Don't worry about it." Frost said.

"Rin, we need to talk." I said as I stood up.

"That doesn't sound good."

"Have you thought about what you want to do next?"

"I'm trying not to think about it. I need to get a few things from home. I mean, my former home."

I could see she was on the verge of crying again. "We have already gathered your things. You'll need to check over your models to make sure they weren't damaged during transport."

Rin's eyes widened. "You got my things? All of them?" She blushed and covered her mouth.

"Yes. If you don't mind my asking, what is up with the dark gray and light gray striped lynx kigu? It is in good condition but I can tell you've had it for a while."

Rin hung her head. "I lied to you, when you asked if I was a furry. I've been part of the fandom for a couple of years. My fursona is Snowpaws the Tilynx. I didn't tell you because I didn't want you or Shock to think I was going all fangirl on you. I'd like to get a full suit eventually, I mean I've saved up the money but my parents wouldn't approve. The only reason I can get away with the kigu is because my Mom has several of her own. Nothing custom, of course just popular characters. The sad thing is, now I could get a fursuit, but I won't be able to afford it since I'm on my own."

I took a deep breath. "There isn't exactly an easy way to say this. Rin, your parents have legally terminated their parental rights."

She gasped and sobbed at once nearly choking.

"Furthermore they have signed over guardianship to us."

"What does that mean?" Rin asked.

"It means we are now, legally speaking, your guardians. Or if you would prefer, your adoptive parents."

"My parents? You're taking me in as your daughter? A nobody like me?"

"You're not a nobody! You're Hatori Rin, or if you prefer Rin Nightiger." Shock quickly answered.

I cleared my throat, "I think Shock means Nightiger Rin."

"No, I like Rin Nightiger."

Kyle laughed, "So Russell and Rin, Frost and Snow? Yeah, you're defiantly part of this family."

"Does that mean I'm going to be living on your ship?"

"Don't get ahead of yourself. You're going to remain Hatori Rin until you finish middle school. There is one other matter, I also made your parents sign a statement that they can never try to contact you. However, if you ever feel like forgiving them you are free to contact them whenever you wish."

"I- I might call my mom tomorrow, just to let her know that I'm safe. Also I only have two full days of exams left."

"You've been spending a lot of time in VR, do you need to study? Stupid question, we'll have dinner and then you will study for tomorrow."

"Oh, what about my transcripts, and I'll need a letter of recommendation."

"Kyle and I will be taking you to school and meeting with your principle in the morning. He needs to understand that you will be attending the Station School so you won't need any letters of recommendation. Shock and Mahan will be taking care of the legal work making sure your adoption is complete and correct. Frost will be with us."

"Enough talk, I've put a lot of effort into making this just right."

"Ramen?" Rin asked.

"I apologize for having to use pre-made noodles instead of doing them myself, but I had to work with what Mahan provided. He told me you preferred shrimp?"

"I love shrimp Ramen!"

"The same for Frost and chicken for the rest of us. Also, steamed barbeque buns and fried tofu with sticky rice. I know it isn't exactly a traditional combination, but you'll get used to the fact that I tend to experiment when cooking. Tiger, do you think you and Frost can handle the school on your own? I'd like to get some shopping done tomorrow. If we're going to be here a couple of days I want to pick up some fresh ingredients."

"Yeah, I suppose two dragons is a bit overkill. Just don’t stop for any naps in the park" I winked first at Kyle and then at Frost.

***

"Prowl-Ar, we may have a problem."

I was sitting at the table skimming local news stories. "What is it, Mahan?"

"Rin's former parents are preparing to do something. I'm not yet sure if they will be a problem for you, or for Shock and myself."

I bit the corner of my lip while Shock quickly gobbled down his cereal. "Mahan, is the car ready?"

"Always."

"Let's go, maybe we can get there first."

"Take this," Kyle said, pushing a bento box into Shock’s hands, "and don't just wolf it down. I put a lot of effort into it without getting 'creative' on you."

"Are Rin and Frost up yet?" I asked.

"Rin is doing some last minute studying and Frost is in the shower."

"Add a school uniform matching those of Rin's school to Frost’s smart cloth wardrobe."

"Please inform them that breakfast is ready." Kyle said, as he set an omelet on the table for me.

"Drake, I really don't deserve you."

"Be careful what you say, you haven't tasted it yet."

I wrapped the tortilla around the egg and took a bite, chewed, swallowed, and smiled. "I'm not sure if they're better than the first time or not. I mean you used real ingredients this time, but that first time is unforgettable."

He leaned over resting on my shoulders, "I'm just trying to keep my wife happy." He laughed and stepped back.

"Listen, just because I-"

"Dad, what is up with this uniform? Mahan says I have to wear it, but it just doesn't feel right." Frost asked.

"Oh my, is that what the boys uniforms are like at the station school?" Rin asked.

"No, Rin, the station uniforms will be more like jumpsuits and they will be the same regardless of gender. Frost, the reason that you're wearing a uniform is because you are going to class with Rin."

"Wait, he can't do that during exams."

"We're leaving early so that you can clear it with your class advisor. Frost, you can take the exams as well if you need a way to remain occupied. However your primary duty is to keep Rin safe. I know you have the training downloads for that. Now eat before your breakfast gets cold and your father gets growly."

"Father?" Rin asked.

"Yeah, Shock is Papa, Prowl-Ar is Dad, and Kyle is Father or Daddy." Frost replied.

Kyle rolled his eyes, "It's a system Frost came up with, and I never get growly."

"You growled last night about the pre-made noodles. In fact, now that Frost mentioned it, you often growl a bit every time you don't think your cooking is the best. I doubt you even realize you're doing it." I replied.

"You growl all the time, at just about everything." Kyle accused.

"I know. I'm not saying it as a criticism I actually think it's really cute. It's just one of the many things I love about you."

"So, how are we getting to the school? Will you be driving?" Frost asked.

"No, we'll be taking the train." I replied.

"Isn't that a bit dangerous considering you're so famous? I mean, no disrespect, but you really don't look Japanese and American businessmen don't ride the trains." Rin pointed out.

"Uniform change, Japanese businessman." My cloths changed to a smart, if bland black suit and tie, white medical mask, and glasses."

"Your eyes!" Rin yelled.

"Oh, right, I forgot to engage the race filter."

"No, I meant your eyes aren't human."

"Oh, I've gotten used to not bothering with my contacts." I adjusted the glasses holographic display. "Is that better?"

"So, are you wearing contacts to make your eyes look inhuman or . . ." She left the question hanging.

"When I first changed my DNA I wasn't as knowledgeable as I am . . . No, I'm not going to do that. Sorry, I've told that story so many times that it seems like the truth. Yeah, I changed my eyes so that they are almost the same as a tiger's except I can also see farther into both the blue and red spectrums than humans."

"So you really can shift? It's not just holographic effects? Can you make it so that I can shift into Snowpaws?"

"That's something we will discuss later. Right now you need to get changed."

"But I'm already wearing my school uniform."

"Just trust me. You'll find a set of silver cuffs in your room. Remove all of your cloths, and put the cuffs on your wrists and ankles and say 'school uniform' and that's what you'll be wearing. You saw how my cloths changed, that's because it is all composed of nanotech. Just go try it." Rin headed back to her room and I turned toward Frost. "Hold out your right wrist."

Frost extended his arm. "Unlock combat armor, authorization 'safety first'. Now Frost, ask for combat armor."

He lifted his hand as though he was just going to straighten his hair and called the armor. The school uniform quickly changed into dark blue padded armor complete with a helmet.

"Now I need you to shift between forms a couple of times to make sure it is correct in all your forms."

The armor adjusted perfectly to his anthro forms, but turned him onto an otter headed ball in his otter form. "That is going to take some serious reprograming to fix. Try your dragon form. The armor should be able to extrapolate the correct configuration from Kyle's armor." The fit wasn't perfect but it was close so I started adjusting the placement."

"O. M. God! Knowing you can shift and seeing it are completely different. Frost, you take cuteness to a whole new level."

I laughed as I finished the adjustments. I could tell Frost was blushing since he hid his head behind my back.

"You're just saying that to be nice. I know I'm a freak."

"You're not a freak! You're one of the cutest drotters I've ever seen. I've talked to several hybrids that can only dream of looking like you do . . . Wait, You can talk in your dragon form?"

"Can't all dragons?" Kyle asked.

"Uh, since there are only two real dragons I guess I'd have to say yes."

"Rin, I need you to hold out your right arm."

"Why?"

"So I can unlock your armor."

"I have armor?" She asked as she quickly extended her arm.

"Unlock combat armor, authorization 'safety first'. Now lift your arm toward you face and say 'combat armor on' to change clothes."

"Combat armor on." Rin gasped as her cloths changed to white armor. "It doesn't fit."

"Give it a few seconds. This is the first time a woman has used the armor the programming needs to adjust." I nodded as the suit tightened in some areas and loosened in others.

"This feels so strange. I can see the armor but it feels like I'm not wearing anything at all."

"Good, that's how it should feel. That armor can stop a high caliber bullet, but the impact can still break bones and hurt like hell. If you're hit with a sword or stick, depending on the power of the swing you might have broken bones and bruising. If someone punches you, you'll be pushed back but you won't feel a thing. If anything goes wrong call your armor and stick close to Frost. He has extensive self-defense and combat training. In his dragon form he'll be nearly unstoppable. I don't expect trouble, but it's always best to be prepared."

"Tiger, keep your coms open. Once I've finished the shopping I'll come join you. Here are your lunches."

"You made bento boxes? That's . . ." Rin started to cry as she ran up and hugged Kyle. “My parents never did that for me. They always said it was too much bother. They'd give me money for the cafeteria, but I didn't like having to deal with everyone there so I'd just get something cheap at the station."

Kyle just looked at me as if asking for guidance.

"Don't get too excited until you try it. You never know what sort of adventure eating can be with Kyle's cooking."

"Just for that I'm making you try this recipe for wasabi mango tarts."

"Kyle, I love you, but if you ever try to feed me mangos blood will spill." I threatened.

"Strawberries then." He replied.

"I look forward to the suffering. Frost, human form and both of you in school uniforms. Now come on we need to get going."

***

The train was packed with barely even room to stand. I had my eyes shut and I was trying to concentrate only on my breathing."

"Dad, what's wrong?" Rin asked.

I gasped and faltered desperately trying to regain my rhythm.

"Rin, how long before our stop?" Frost asked.

"Just a couple of minutes. It's the next stop. What is going on?"

"When we stop help me get him off the train. He'll be better then. He doesn't do so well in large crowds. Right now he's using every bit of concentration and strength not to have a panic attack."

The train lurched to a stop and I could feel Frost and Rin leading me forward."

"The crowd has thinned a bit." Frost said.

I cracked my eyes open. It was still overly crowded but only the kids were in my immediate personal space. I lifted my finger as if adjusting my glasses. "Kyle, when this is over either have Mahan pick us up or we'll need a cab. I can't do that again." I waited a second.

"Understood." Kyle responded.

"Prowl-Ar, Rin's parents have just arrived at the school. You're the one that'll have to deal with them."

"Understood, thanks Mahan."

"They came here? What am I supposed to do?" Rin asked.

"You go to class and take your exams. If you're called to the office, ignore it, unless it is from me. You'll know because you'll hear it like you just heard Kyle and Mahan. Also, even if I'm the one that calls you, don't respond until you've completed your test. Your exams come first." I looked around, Rin had continued to lead us along and all I could see were students. I breathed a sigh of relief. "Mahan, upload a map of the building.” The map appeared an overlay on my glasses. “Thank you. Rin, take Frost to see your advisor while I deal with the rest. I'll see you two later." They set off and I watched them go, hoping that things wouldn't go horribly wrong. I steadied my still frayed nerves and entered the school.

I slowly paced in the principle's waiting room. It had been over an hour and Rin's former parents were still arguing about what they wanted the principle to do. I doubted a normal humans could hear them but I wasn't having any problems. The atmosphere changed as they told the principle that Rin was prostituting herself and the school needed to expel her.

The door was locked. I barely noticed the wood split out as I busted it open. "I've heard enough! It's not bad enough you disowned your daughter because she got into a school, nearly every honor student is competing to attend, but now you're dishonoring both her and me? I should disembowel you right here."

"Who are you?" Mr. Hatori asked, angrily.

"I'm the one that rescued Rin last night."

“You're with those lecherous men my daughter has been selling herself to?" Mr. Hatori demanded.

I stopped my hand a fraction of an inch from his throat.

"Yes, who are you?" The principle asked.

I slowly pulled my hand away with a growl. "As of today I'm Rin's adoptive father. From now on she is under my protection. She will complete her exams, finish school, and then attend the space station high school."

"I'm sorry, but Hatori Rin's grades are not good enough to compete for one of those slots."

"You're right. Hatori Rin, will not be attending that high school. Uniform change, dress armor. However my adopted daughter, Rin Nightiger, is guaranteed a place."

The principle gasped, obviously recognizing me.

"You expect me to believe that garbage? You're a liar that wants my daughter for nefarious reasons."

“Your daughter?” I removed three pieces of paper from my pocket and handed them to the principle. “Last I checked you gave up the right to call her that.”

"Those are worthless. They'll never stand up in the courts." Mr. Hatori sneered.

"Maybe, maybe not, but these papers will." Shock said as he entered.

"Ah, another of the letches that invaded my home."

Shock passed the new set papers to the principle and another set to Rin's parents.

"These are all officially notarized. Termination of the Hatori's parental rights, adoption records of Rin Nightiger by Prowl-Ar, Kelly, and Kyle Nightiger, a protective order that Mr. and Mrs. Hatori cannot communicate with Rin Nightiger without her permission."

"They're all fake." Mr. Hatori said confidently.

"No, they’re not.” The principle stated. “This is a letter from the prime minister verifying Rin Nightiger's dual citizenship between Japan and the new Furry Nation."

"Oh right, I'm supposed to show you this as well." Fox said, as he passed the principle Rin's new passport. The principle looked surprised and then handed it back.

I looked it over and laughed. “Mahan, you've outdone yourself." Rin's picture slowly rotated for a 360 degree image and on completion it shifted into Snowpaws. As that image rotated the text had also changed from Rin to Snowpaws and a new line had been added for species. In this case Tilynx.

"Of course. I've also expedited the purchase of a building to convert into our new embassy. Therefore Japan is the first country in the world to boast an official Furry Nation Embassy." Mahan added as his drone looked in through the broken doorway.

"It's all fake. There is no way my stupid daughter could ever know anyone important."

"You worthless piece of shit! Shut your mouth or I'll rip out your throat." Shock had shifted and he was face to muzzle with the man while snarling and baring his fangs. "Tiger, tell this- this nobody if he insults our daughter again." Suddenly Shock shifted back, released Rin's former father and composed himself. "No, there is no need to lower myself. Mr. Hatori, keep your mouth shut or else I'll contact someone to deal with you permanently."

"I'm not surprised your sort would claim to have friends in the Yakuza."

"No, I don't at least none that I know of.” Shock glanced at me and I shrugged. “I'm just saying if you don't adjust your attitude the outcome may be very Grimm."

"Shock!"

"What? I'm just pointing out that I have a Grimm, feeling that Mr. Hatori will come to a Grimm end if he isn't careful."

I rolled my eyes as Kyle arrived. "Will you take him out of here before he causes real trouble?" I asked.

Kyle grabbed Mr. Hatori's arm and dragged him out.

"I meant Shock!" I yelled.

There was a loud roar and a rather girly shriek. A few seconds later they returned. I noticed Mr. Hatori had wet himself. Kyle released him and he slumped in his chair.

"I believe he isn't going to question our identities any longer."

"You're making it really hard to concentrate on my exam." Rin whispered.

My knees gave out and I slumped to the floor as I realized Rin had heard everything. The train ride made me forget to lock our coms to command frequency only.

"Mr. Nightiger, what is wrong?" The principle asked.

"Com, unlocked. Rin heard everything."

"What do you mean?" He asked.

"Our suits have built in communications systems." Kyle informed him.

"So? Rin should be wearing her school uniform."

"Our uniforms can be changed as we require. Armor on, see my clothes transformed into armor. This morning Prowl-Ar gave Rin a set in case she gets attacked, except he forgot to lock the communications so Rin heard everything that was said here." Shock said.

"I'm so stupid. I hoped to get here before Rin’s former parents. The quickest way was by train. It was Frost and Rin that got me out of there before I completely shut down. But, I forgot to lock down my coms. I'm so sorry, Rin shouldn't have had to here all that."

"Serves the little slut right." Mrs. Hatori screamed, as four slashes appeared across her face.

"Bitch, we protect our family members. Remember that every time you look in the mirror." Shock snarled.

"Someone call the police!" She shrieked.

"I'd suggest paramedics, though the wounds will bleed like mad they are superficial." Mahan stated critically.

"You attacked me!" She yelled.

"I was defending my family's honor."

"You'll be arrested and imprisoned. You filthy animal"

Shock sighed, "I'd hoped Rin and you might be reconciled eventually. I suppose not everyone can be redeemed. I claim diplomatic immunity. The police can't touch me."

"He's a dragon, a real live dragon." Mr. Hatori mumbled.

"Dad, I've finished my exams, for this morning. Should we join you?" Rin asked.

I glanced at Rin's former parents, "No, it's best you don't interrupt the other students."

"Are you sure? You don't sound too good." Frost added.

"I'm just a bit worn out. Shock and Kyle and Mahan are here, they'll make sure I'm alright, whether I want them to or not."

"I thought that sounded more like Daddy's roar than yours. We'll see you at lunch."

I locked the communications to 'receive only' and slowly stood up.

"Oh stop whimpering. Frost was very careful making sure your wounds were superficial. Once they heal they won't even scar. At least, you're the only one that'll notice them." Mahan stated critically.

"If I might ask, how did you get the imperial seal on these documents?" The principle asked.

"The Prime Minister introduced me to the Emperor. He personally requested that we build an embassy here as soon as possible."

"He framed his request as it being a matter of honor since Japan has supported our claims of nationhood from the very beginning. As per Lord Nightiger's orders I found and purchased an existing building that would suit or needs. Both men seemed impressed by my speed and efficiency." Mahan stated.

"Principle, the police and paramedics have arrived." The secretary said glancing in at us.

The Principle looked at me as if he was asking for my permission to let them in. I just shrugged.

"Please show them in."

As the first paramedic entered I pointed at Mrs. Hatori. "Minor lacerations to the face and mild hysteria." Then I pointed at Mr. Hatori, "Likely Post traumatic stress, he's also had a nasty fright so you should consider getting a heart monitor on him." The paramedics immediately got to work carrying them from the room.

Once they were gone a policeman entered. "So which one you wants to start?" He asked.

"I busted the door. Kyle here, ended Mr. Hatori's ranting and raving by scaring the piss out of him. Finally Kelly scratched Mrs. Hatori's face when she wouldn’t keep her fowl mouth closed."

"You're confessing all this?" He asked in surprise.

"I have no reason to lie and the principle here can cooperate my account officer?"

"Satoshi Akira. You are all under arrest. What is your name, for my incident report?"

I clicked my tongue three times. "I don't think so. My name is Prowl-Ar Nightiger and we have diplomatic immunity.”

Officer Akira flinched and started shaking as he reached for his gun.

"All armor on." In an instant we were all wearing our armor, "Mahan, please provide the fine officer without diplomatic immunity papers. Officer, you might as well forget about your sidearm. It will be completely ineffective against our armor." I turned to the principle, "Before I forget have your secretary send the bill for the door repair to the embassy. There's no need for the school to pay for damages I caused."

"What about those individual's medical bills?"

"That is their responsibility." Kyle quickly pointed out. "If he hadn't tried to make trouble for Rin he wouldn't have experienced the full ire of a very pissed off dragon."

"Same goes for her, but she learned not to piss off a fox." Shock added

"Y-you're really." The officer stammered.

"Scary? I know, we try not to be, but idiots will keep pissing us off." Shock shifted to his anthro form. "Shock Dafox-Nightiger, Nice to meet you Officer Satoshi."

"Um, I really shouldn't ask this, but can I get a picture with all of you? My kids are big fans of your game."

I smiled and shifted to my anthro form. Kyle shrugged and did the same. I pulled Mahan into the picture as well. "If your kids ask, this is Mahan. He's the one that edits the video, makes sure it gets released, and is the primary moderator of the new game servers."

"I don't think I can get a good selfie with all of you. You're so big like that."

"I'll take the picture, if you'll do the same for me afterwards." The principle said in awe.

"Deal!"

We did our best to smile without looking like we planned to eat the humans. "Mahan, copy the information from my headset and give it to the officer. While there won't be a case, that information may provide context to our actions. It should also help him stay out of trouble with his superiors when he returns with no suspects. Officer, if you bring your kids by the embassy with copies of that picture we'll autograph them, since we'll be here for a couple of days, while Rin completes her exams."

"You mean the new Hatori Rin character is a real person?" He asked in surprise.

I sighed, "Those two the paramedics took away were her former parents. When they discovered she'd been accepted to the station school they disowned her and kicked her out on the street. She retreated into VR, not expecting us to find out."

"We rescued her and made her a part of our family. So dishonoring her was the same as dishonoring us." Fox growled.

"Shock, calm yourself. Officer Satoshi, all the information you need is on this card. You can also call in to your superiors. They'll find the same information on the police server in the file marked Rin Nightiger." Mahan said, as he held out an SD card. "That card also contains the embassy address. Please keep that to yourself for at least two weeks. The Prime Minister and Emperor are planning a special ceremony for the official announcement. That goes for you and your secretary as well, Principle Hayato."

They both bowed and assured us they wouldn't reveal the address. I could tell Officer Satoshi didn't want to leave, but he had to get back to work, and Principle Hayato asked if we would like a tour of the school. As we slowly walked the halls listening to his description of how the school worked I was acutely aware that Rin and Frost were not in sight."

"Principle Hayato, what do the students usually due if they complete their exams before time ends?"

"Oh, most of them go to the club rooms, though some spend time studying for their next exam in the library or out in the courtyard." The club rooms are on the top floor along with the library. I thought we'd visit them next and then end the tour in the courtyard in time for lunch."

I nodded as we ascended the stairs.

"This first room is the modeling club. They're not very important and barely have the required four members to retain club status. Next we have . . ."

The principle continued on as I slid the door open and found five individuals. Rin and Frost were in one corner and the other three were chatting and working on a diorama in the center of the room.

"Sir, this room is for club members and school staff only." One of the trio quickly pointed out.

"Yeah, we're trying to finish our diorama project for the end of term." the second said.

"Why don't you have those two helping you?" I asked.

"He's a guest and not allowed, and she's a freak. She's only here because we need four members to be a club." the third added.

"Snow, it’s a good thing you're going to be at the station school next term. This place is toxic, and I’m not talking about the paint fumes. So what are you working on?" I asked.

Rin smiled, "Those three are doing a diorama of the evacuation battle. Just before the implosion happened. I'm trying to figure out what parts you used for your suit's new legs."

"You can recreate those using Gundam Astrays and paint. Flat black for the inner frame and gloss black for the outer armor."

"You, you're . . . Um, where does Slider's sniper rifle originate?" Number two asked.

"It's from the Gundam Dynames."

"I told you it wasn't the GM sniper rifle." Number two quickly said.

Rin rolled her eyes, "I told them that when they first started to argue about it, but they wouldn't listen to me.

"Mr. Nightiger, you shouldn't be interfering with the student's projects."

Obviously the principle finally noticed that I wasn't with them.

"I wouldn't dream of interfering. I was just giving my daughter a bit of encouragement, and checking on my son." I winked at both of them and Rin giggled, likely at the stunned looks on the other three student's shocked faces.

"Oh, I hadn't realized she was a member of the modeling club. I thought she was in the gaming club."

"I'll see you two again at lunch. Principle Hayato, please tell me more about this gaming club."

***

So what did you think of the gaming club?" Rin asked.

"We never made it that far. We were dragged into the honors club where the principle droned on and on about every little detail of their lives." Shock groaned.

"Worse yet, once he was finished each of the club members basically repeated the same information as they introduced themselves." Kyle agreed.

"It's a bit late, but maybe next year you should make it so that only B and C students will be accepted. We're more likely to be excited at the chance rather than believing we're entitled to a slot. Mmm, this is really good. I'm going to have to be careful or I'll get really fat eating like this." Rin said taking another morsel from her lunch.

"I'm very careful making sure everyone is properly fed. You're going to need that extra energy for your exams." Kyle pointed out.

"What subjects were your exams this morning?" I asked.

Rin laughed, "English and Japanese, I'm pretty sure I did really well on both since I've been getting a lot of practice. I'm a bit worried about the one after lunch. I'm not very good at history, so many names and dates to remember."

"Can you name the runner and part numbers of your favorite model?" I asked.

"That's easy."

"Think of history as a collection of sprews, the parts numbers are the dates and the part are people's names. As you build the model you recreate the historical timeline. "

Rin's eyes widened. She quickly finished her lunch and grabbed her bag. "I need to go to the library and convert my history notes. Frost, I know you're sick of watching me, so why don't you stay with our fathers. I should be fine here at school."

Frost smiled and snuck a bun from my lunch. I gave him a tap with my chop sticks. "We'll head back to the apartment then?" He asked.

"I'll wait here in order to drive Rin home after school. This courtyard is rather secluded and I'm not really ready to face more people yet."

"A taxi it is then. Rin, stay safe, and good luck on the exam." Mahan said.

"Um, you can't just stay here. People will think . . . Dad, were did he go?" She asked looking at Kyle.

"I haven't moved. I just activated my suit's stealth function. Change to your armor and your helmet will highlight my silhouette."

"How do I do that?" Frost asked.

"That option is locked on your armor and it is going to stay that way until you're older." Shock quickly stated.

"It also requires specialized modifications that can only be made on the ship so Rin's armor doesn't even have the capability, yet."

"So I'll find you here after school. Now I really need to go study. "She smiled and waved as she ran toward the entrance.

"Mahan, here's a list of model kits I'd like you to generate and send to the modeling club. Normally I wouldn't interfere like this, but those kits have been out of print for decades."

"This last one on your list never existed."

"True, but it could have been done as a limited special. Looking at the models in the club room I noticed that Rin doesn't paint her models. That's not to say she doesn't put a lot of work into them she's just a builder that prefers to let the plastic speak for itself."

"I'll make sure it is sent same day delivery even if I have to do it myself. Come on everyone, the taxi has arrived."

I waved as they left and then felt really stupid since I was still cloaked so only Mahan could see me.

***

"Tiger, wake up."

"Hmm what?" I glanced around and noticed Rin kneeling next to me. I stood up and stretched and realized I was in my tiger form. I quickly shifted back to human. "Black suit, white shirt, tiger striped tie." As my clothes changed the cloak shut down. "So, how was the rest of your day?"

"I think I passed my history exam. I know your advice helped a lot. How did you think of that?"

"When I was in college I discovered if I simultaneously took notes and worked on my writing I did better. Even though the stories were completely unrelated to the topic I'd remember the story and the information was there. You just have to find the right tool. For me it was writing and I just guessed that for you it would be model building."

"Are you stuck in traffic? It's getting late." Kyle asked over the comlink.

"Open link, sorry to worry you Drake, but we haven't left the school yet."

"It's my fault. I had cleanup duty and then I got busy with the modeling club. We're heading out now." Rin said, as she pulled me towards the closest parking area.

"That's fine, Rin. I was just calling to find out if I had time to run out and pick up a few more items that I forgot this morning.

"Is Mahan there? I need to know where he parked the car."

"I'm always on the network. The car is . . . currently in twelve different locations.”

It seems I wasn’t watching close enough.

“Which one was it?" I asked.

"The classic Skyline. Shock wanted to make an entrance. I'll call you a cab."

"No, I survived the train this morning. I'll do so again, even if I have to shift and scare everyone to get a bit of breathing space."

"It should be fine. We're between the rush of people getting off work and the crowds going out for the evening." Rin insisted.

She was right the train was mostly empty. I sat down on one of the bench seats and laughed.

"What's so funny?" She asked.

"I live on a starship that can fly from one end of the galaxy to the other. I've saved the planet more than once, I'm now the leader of a fledgling nation, and here I am riding the train like the common nobody that I really am."

"You're not! Do you know how many of my neighbors passed by before I retreated into VR last night? Those are people that I see on a daily basis, some of them I even talk to. None of them stopped to ask why I was crying. But you, you barely know me and you still came to rescue me. That isn't the actions of a common nobody."

"Fine I'm riding the train like an uncommon nobody."

"I'm telling you you're not."

“Um, excuse me, sir. Are you Tiger from the VR video series?"

The kid couldn't have been more than nine or ten. The woman, likely his mother, looked totally exhausted and was well past paying close attention.

"He sure is, and I'm his mechanic." Rin quickly answered.

"Can I get a picture with you?"

I nodded. "If you want."

The kid ran to this mother and started pulling on her sleeve, "Mommy, Mommy. I need you to take a picture for me."

"Toba, stop bothering people and come sit down."

"But Mister Tiger said it was okay. He's a big star. Please take a picture of me with him." The kid begged.

"I'm sorry sir, my son believes everybody is someone famous. Toba, sit down and behave yourself. Mommy has a long night ahead of her."

"Um, ma'am, your son is right. Mr. Nightiger is rather famous." Rin pointed out.

The lady flinched and sat up. Did I hear you- sacred Buddha, you are!"

"I suggest you hurry up and take that picture for Toba, our stop is coming up." I glanced around and was surprised to see that there was only the four of us. "Rin, suit up, armor on. We probably should look the part."

Toba stood in front of us with a great big smile as his mom took the picture.

"Just a moment, one more really special picture. Rin, ask for Snowpaws."

"You don't mean . . ."

I smiled. "Do you think Shock would have let you leave without such an essential clothing option?"

"Snowpaws on." Rin was engulfed in a full fursuit and she immediately started bouncing on her toes. "Oh thank you, thank you, thank you!"

"Try to calm down or you're going to overheat."

"Mommy, she's a big cartoon kitty."

"That's right Toba, and I'm a real tiger." I shifted to my tiger form and Rin crouched beside me. "Don't worry, he doesn't," Rin started as Toba wrapped his arms around my neck in a big hug as his mother took the picture, "bite children." She finished saying.

"Big tiger." Toba laughed.

"Change to jeans, t-shirt, and jacket." Rin gasped as her requested change happened. "You're right, it does get hot in suit. How many clothing options do I have access to?"

I shifted back to human form. "Your entire wardrobe plus a couple special options." The train came to a halt and we all got out. "You live near here?" I asked Toba's mother.

"Oh no, we couldn't afford to live in this area. I'm heading to work at my evening job."

"What do you do, if it isn’t too personal for me to ask?"

"I- I clean offices. It isn't much, but every bit helps. I just hope my boss never finds out I bring Toba with me. He's a good boy and stays out of trouble. Usually he does his homework or watches VRTV."

I was rather surprised as we approached the new embassy. There was a lot of activity as equipment was being moved out.

"What are you doing here?"

At first I thought the sweaty business man was talking to me.

"I'm here to do my job." Toba’s mother replied.

"Oh, right." The man quickly typed on his phone. "There, you're officially fired. She started to cry.

"What exactly is going on?" I asked.

The building owner is evicting me. Claiming my business didn't conform to their ideals." He immediately turned to yell at a pair of the movers.

"Come along Toba, we'll see if we can afford to get you something to eat at the station." His mother said wiping her eyes.

"I clicked my headset on, "Kyle, can you make enough for two extra guests?" I whispered.

"Easily, what's going on?"

"I'll fill you in shortly."

"Miss, sorry, how rude of me, I never got your name. Would you like to have a cup of tea, maybe hot chocolate for Toba, before you head home?"

"It's Yoshiro, and we couldn't intrude."

"Please, I insist."

"Mommy, hot chocolate, pleeeeese."

"I don't know."

"It's the least we can do, since I may be the reason you were fired."

"You live here?" She asked in surprise.

"Not exactly, more like reviewing my assets." Even though it was obvious Miss Yoshiro didn't really trust me they did follow us inside and into the elevator. The doors closed and the elevator immediately started to rise.

"You didn't choose a floor." Toba said.

"I don't need to, the elevator knows were to take me. Mahan, please give Ms. Yoshiro and Yoshiro Toba temporary security clearance."

"I did that when it was obvious they decided to accept your offer."

"You're the vending machine man." Toba said, excitedly.

"Who?" Ms. Yoshiro asked.

"He's the man in the vending machine that gives me free food while you're working."

"Toba! Have you been stealing food?"

"No Mommy, the man in the machine gives it to me."

"He is correct, I do provide him with free meals when you don't have enough."

"Who are you?" She asked.

"I'm Mahan."

"He's the artificial intelligence that takes care of all Shadow Runner holdings."

"You own this whole building?"

"Yes, among many others spread around the world." Mahan said proudly.

"Mahan, just because I've given her temporary clearance doesn't mean she needs to know everything."

"Sorry, I'll make a note of that."

"Well, you could tell us why you evicted her boss."

"When I rented the three floors to him he was a tech support firm, however, it seems his ideas of support turned to hacking, extortion, and scamming. However, If Ms. Yoshiro is amenable, I'm willing to hire her directly and put her in charge of the Embassy maintenance crew."

"You're to kind, but I cannot wait until you have built an embassy. I was barely able to pay our bills with three jobs. Now with only two . . ."

"Are you sure? I'm speaking of a management position. That means a significant pay increase. There will be more work, of course, however you will have the freedom to hire your own crew, though they will still have to pass my rigorous security checks. Of course, as a possible security risk yourself, you will need to be given onsite accommodations. I'll still maintain high security areas, of course."

"It all sounds too good to be true, but we can't survive on the promise of a future job."

"Um, Ms. Yoshiro, this building is the Furry Nation embassy. The Prime Minister will be making the announcement in a few days. What Mahan is offering is for you to hire and manage a crew to do the job you were just fired from, for higher pay, a rent free apartment, and utilities for you and your family at the expense of your other two jobs."

"He can do this?" She asked.

"As I said Mahan maintains all our properties that includes hiring staff." The elevator doors opened into a small waiting room. I walked across it, dismissed my boots and opened the door. "Please come in. I'm sure your tea and hot chocolate are waiting."

"Please excuse me, but I need to go study for my exams tomorrow." Rin bowed and turned to head for her room as Shock entered.

"I see we have guests."

"Poppa! Thank you for the fursuit! I love it." Rin ran over and hugged Shock who looked stunned for a moment.

"You're welcome. I know how important it can be to be able to show others what we look like inside."

"Mommy, that's Mr. Fox, Mr. Tiger's boyfriend."

Rin released Shock, bowed again to the Yoshiro’s and went into her room.

"Actually, little one, he is our husband.” Kyle said, as he placed the tea and coco on the table."

"Mr. Drake! You're my favorite. I love your red dragon suit."

Kyle looked at me in confusion.

"Toba here is a real fanboy of our game."

"I see. Hello, I'm Kyle Dacat-Nightiger." Kyle bowed to Ms. Yoshiro.

"Oh right, I am Shock Dafox-Nightiger." Shock said, imitating Kyle.

"Hello, I am Kiyohime Yoshiro and this is my son Toba."

"Where's Frost?" I asked.

"He is currently napping in his room. I believe he has inherited your fear of large crowds. Today may have taken more out of him than any of you realize." Mahan replied, as he entered.

"You're Mahan?" Ms. Yoshiro asked.

"Yes, or at least this is one of my drones that I am actively controlling at the moment. I find that most humans find it easier to relate to me in one of my drones rather than as a disembodied voice."

Ms. Yoshiro looked around. "I'll have to clean this place?"

"No, the top four floors are considered high security areas. This floor will only see use when the Runners are visiting Japan."

"Ms. Yoshiro, your tea is getting cold, please join us. Dinner will be ready shortly."

"Dinner?"

"Yes, Prowl-Ar implied that you would be staying for dinner."

"Sorry, I should have asked first, but you seemed to be so upset over being fired I thought a cup of tea and a good meal would help lift your spirits."

"You're being so kind. You're not at all what I expected."

"Has our Fox been spreading nasty gossip on his web channel?" I grinned at Shock to be sure he knew I was joking.

"Oh, I don't watch those kinds of channels."

Shock looked like someone had just slapped him.

"I guess I should start, since the news feeds I watch characterize you either as self-interested glory seekers or half crazed animals. I was really surprised when you changed into a tiger, yet you speak perfect Japanese. I mean, you speak if flawlessly without a hint of foreign accent like a truly civilized individual."

"That is due to the way we learned your language. Still those channels aren't exactly wrong. I can easily be seen as a self-interested, since I refuse to share more than the minutest amount of assistance to most organizations."

"They are completely wrong about our Tiger being a glory seeker. He'd actually prefer to go back into hiding until everyone forgot about him." Fox said, as he sat down.

"He announced to the world that he saved us from extinction."

"That's because he knew we'd be seen when we diverted the asteroid. Rather than have the militaries of the world go into crisis mode because of an invading alien . . ."

I politely excused myself as Kyle kept explaining. I immediately went to Frost's room. "Son, are you all right?"

"I'm fine."

"So, tell me how your first time in class went."

"Are all schools like that?"

"It depends on what you mean. Schools in other countries are of course different. How about you tell me what happened."

"We met with the class advisor. He wasn't happy that Snow had brought a visitor during exams. So I told him I was there to protect her since she is now a Shadow Runner. He laughed and called us liars. I know you're going to be angry, but I shifted to full dragon form and told him that I was no liar. After that he gave Snow a note saying that I was allowed in class with her as long as I wasn't disruptive."

"There are times, like when you're defending yourself, you're allowed to shift. That was definitely one of those situations. So what happened next?”

“We went to Snow's class and gave the note to her homeroom teacher who just shrugged and assigned me a seat at the back of the room, beside Snow. Snow told me later that the teacher ranked the students and we were the lowest in the class. As soon as class started she called me back up to the front to introduce myself. As soon as I looked at all those people staring at me I couldn't talk or even move."

"That's called stage fright. We can deal with that. You didn't panic or retreat inside yourself to the point you didn't know where you were, did you?"

"No, but it was kind of like what happened to you on the train. Snow came forward and introduced me as her new step brother. As soon as she said my name they all started laughing, even the teacher. Snow led me back to my seat. Even after the teacher got them calmed down they'd glance at me and giggle. Why did they laugh at me? Snow said it was because they were stupid and what they thought didn't matter."

"They laughed because they thought Rin was lying. She's right though what they think doesn't matter. You didn't shift that time?"

"No, Snow told me it would be better not to shift again. She said it would be too disruptive. Anyway after homeroom the English teacher arrived. The homeroom teacher whispered something to him and he gave me a dirty look. When class started he came up and told me that I'd be taking the exam like everybody else."

I laughed. "Won't he be shocked if he grades it?"

"He did grade it. I was the first one finished. When he saw that he came and took my test. Everybody watched him as he sat down and glared at me. Then he took out a red pen and started reading. He went over the whole thing without making a mark. The second time it seemed like he was really trying to find something to mark. After the third read through he just sat there looking stunned. I know the only reason I got a perfect score is because of a memory implant, but I still felt accomplished. After that most of the students just looked at me in confusion."

"They probably thought you weren't very smart after making up that story, but after proving how smart you are they had to wonder if you'd been telling the truth."

"Again the English teacher whispered to the Japanese teacher as they passed. He actually came up to me and slapped the exam down and said 'Ace that if you can.' I took the test and sat back waiting five minutes after everyone else had started. I know, I shouldn't have done that, but I wanted to show him I wasn't intimidated. Once again I completed the exam first. I, uh, even made notes where he'd made mistakes in the questions."

"Yes, that was going a bit far, go on."

"Anyway just like the English teacher he started trying to find something wrong. I could tell I was in trouble. He was very angry and he'd just got up and was approaching me when Daddy roared. Everyone in that room jumped except Snow and me, since we could hear what was going on. By the way, she hides her feeling just like you do some times. Anyway everyone was staring at the door when Snow says "It's not wise to upset Frost's father, my stepfather, Kyle Nightiger. You're just lucky you all only heard his roar. Seeing him angry in his full dragon form would make you wet yourself.' After that when they'd glance at us with looks of fear or hate. Please, don't make me go back there. I can't, I don't . . ."

"Sh, I understand." I quickly hugged him. "It's too much like how you were treated before. I won't make you go back there. However, the station school will be different. Everyone there will already know you and Rin are our kids. Though you may get a few hateful looks it isn't because of who you are but because you are able to shift."

"Not to interrupt, but Kyle told me to inform you that dinner is ready." Mahan said.

"We'd better hurry." Frost said quickly getting up.

"Yes, we wouldn't want to make Kyle mad. He might roar at us."

Frost laughed.

"Oh and we need to be on our best behavior since we have guests.

***

Snow came in and flopped in a chair. "God I hate exams."

"That bad?" I asked, looking up from my pad.

"I'm pretty sure I passed all of them. It's just that I'm ready to move on."

"I haven't asked yet, but are you upset about leaving your friends and family behind?"

"The only family I had doesn't want me, and I don't really have any friends. I mean the closest thing I have is the modeling club, and they only put up with me to keep the club going. I'm sure they'll find someone to replace me. By the way, thank you for sending Shock with me today. A few of the other kids were making fun of me until he appeared. It was funny watching him convince them he was a vengeful kitsuné, and cursing their families.”

"Sorry Tiger, but I couldn't just stand by while those kids were being so mean." Fox said, as he turned off his cloak and draped himself across my lap. "Can you forgive me?"

I shook my head. "I suppose I'll have to if I ever want to move again."

Shock grinned. "You’d like that wouldn't you?"

Kyle leaned over the back of the chair. "Only if I get to hold the top half down."

"I was going to ask if I could go on my own tomorrow. I only have two exams left and the rest of the day will be spent working on the diorama. We're supposed to be practicing for the talent exhibition, but my model building isn't much of an active talent. So I won't really have to deal with anyone."

"That would be inadvisable. You are now a part of my crew, therefore until you've received self-defense training at least one crew member needs to be near you at all times." Mahan stated.

"Mahan, is there a dart in the hangar?"

"Currently there are three shuttles and two darts."

"Rin, what tests do you have tomorrow?"

"Math, that should be fine, I've always been good at math, and chemistry. I should be safe in there, but I doubt I'll do very well."

I nodded. "Mahan, prepare a dart for launch."

"You're going to miss dinner, aren't you?" Kyle asked accusingly.

"Sorry Drake, but I probably should have done this sooner."

Kyle sighed. "Yeah, is this going to be the full works?"

"No, memory crystal and implant only and then we'll be back, but Rin is likely to be exhausted."

"I'll be sure to prepare an appropriate breakfast."

"Dart is prepped for launch."

"What is going on?" Rin asked.

Shock moved and Kyle let me up. "I'll fill you in when we're in the air. Switch you clothing to armor, it doubles as a space suit." I replied as we headed for the elevator.

"We're going into space?" Rin asked in surprise.

"We're going out to the Junkyard for a couple of hours."

We entered the bay and the dart was sitting in the middle of the room.

"We're going into space in that? It's smaller than a car."

"The dart is a high speed recon ship. Forward seat operates the cameras and sensors. Back seat is for the pilot. The rest of the ship is basically the anti-grav, shield, Freem engine and cloak welded to a thruster for a ship five times its size all covered in a thin skin of metal shielding and stubby wings for maneuvering in atmosphere."

"Is it safe?"

"I haven't died, yet."

Rin laughed and crawled into the front seat. I noticed she actually had room to spare. I squeezed into the back and closed the canopy.

"Mahan, open launch bay."

The ceiling spiraled open. "You have forty-five seconds of clearance to orbit."

I snapped the cloak on as I rotated to vertical. "Brace yourself!" I yelled as I dialed the anti-gravity to maximum shooting us straight up like a missile.

"Clearing planetary envelope." The computer announced. I adjusted our heading and engaged the main thruster. Prepare for Freem jump." I engaged the Freem drive and we jumped to altered space. "We now have five altered minutes before we return to real space."

"What exactly are we doing?" Rin asked as she gazed out at altered space.

"First we're going to record a memory crystal of you. That way, if you die, I can bring you back."

"Is that the secret of your immortality?"

"No. While I am functionally immortal I'm not invulnerable. I can be killed like anybody else. If that ever happens Mahan will bring me back. Basically that is a backup. The primary use for the memory crystals is that Mahan uses them to modify his personality. The more memory crystals he has the more unique he becomes. The main reason for this mission is to hyper educate you in self-defense along with an abbreviated Shadow Runner skill set. Before you ask Mahan will choose which skills and knowledge you'll receive. I'd usually insist on the full download but there isn't time tonight."

"Will I be able to shift?" Rin asked in a hopeful voice.

"No, that takes another set of equipment only onboard the Runner. However, if you want there is a way to experience what it is like."

"Do it."

"I haven't even explained."

"It doesn't matter, just let me feel what it's like."

"You won't actually be shifting. I'll use your memory crystal to generate an avatar of you in VR. The avatar will be able to shift. When you're nearing the end of your education the avatar's experiences will be added to your memories. So when you're finished you'll remember everything your avatar experienced."

"I'm still in."

"As long as you're sure. We're dropping out of Freem now. Junkyard Station, this is Captain Nightiger."

"Yeah, like anyone else has the ability to visit. Mahan says you were on some rescue mission? Is that why we can't access the Fallow base location in the game?" Tuft asked

"That's right, we added another member to the family."

"Good God, isn't Kyle and Shock enough for you?" Tank asked.

Rin laughed, "I doubt that's why he rescued me."

"That's a female voice. Prowl-Ar, what are you up to?"

"Tank, I recognize that voice. It's the new suit specialist NPC from the game. He's gone and created another artificial individual."

I carefully sat the dart down in the landing bay as Rin answered.

"I'll have you know I'm as real as you are. I was never an NPC."

I could hear both Tuft and Tank laughing. "Rin, both of them are currently androids waiting for Mahan to finish coding DNA so that they can be transferred into biological bodies."

"Oh."

I shut down the comlink. "One more thing, under no circumstance should you call Tuft cute, even though he is a really cute anthro bunny, he really doesn't like the "C" word so stick with handsome or hot. Also Tank and Tuft are a couple and deeply devoted to one another."

"So no 'C' word, just like most furrys, and keep my hands off; got it."

The bay had pressurized and I popped the canopy.

"So what's up?"

I jumped and looked at Tuft.

"Android remember? I don't have to wait for the bay to pressurize. So, you warned her, that's no fun."

Rin glanced at me. "You're right he is really . . . hot."

"Tank and Tuft, this is my daughter Rin Nightiger."

"Daughter? Rin you have my sympathies." Tank stated.

"Thank you, but I don’t need them, my new parents are much better than the ones that disowned me and accused me of horrible things."

"We're here to make her first memory crystal and for a basic self-defense memory implant. She's tired of having us shadow her to be sure she's safe."

"Tuft, why don't you show Rin to the education room. I need to speak with the commander."

"Go ahead, you’re safe with Tuft." I watched as they headed deeper into the base. I felt a pressure on my neck.

"Sorry, but Mahan ordered us to make sure you got some sleep."

"Mahan, I promised her she could see what it’s like to shift using mem-"
