Beyond the Bite
The writing prompts in the writing group in which I take part on telegram are weekly but, due to a conversation had in our group I ended up doing a second run of this week's prompt.
(Interested in joining us? You can find it here: https://t.me/joinchat/CPoeZhclggenrOEh0yYwvg )
The goal is to do a short story of "around 1000 words" This story is based off of the writing prompt:
"Well... I didn't expect that reaction..."
Without further ado, my second writing practice submission for the week:
Beyond the Bite

Dwight lay sprawled out atop the inn's shabby but surprisingly comfortable bed. As an adventurer, he was used to living on the road and, among his past experiences, found his current accommodations to be one of the better ones. Other inns, at the very least, didn't have beds large enough for two. On the other hand, he realized, elves didn't take on that much room and Caelys was snuggled up in the crook of his arm.
The elven sorcerer was a relatively new addition to the group and, as the titular leader of Dwight's Wolfpack, Dwight had the deciding vote on any memberships. Although the warrior was not a great fan of magic he had to admit that the spell caster had proved himself on a number of occasions during their first foray into the Twisted Depths of Drahna Geir Dungeon and, if he was being honest to himself, he liked the point eared finger waver... perhaps that's why he'd taken the pretty man into his bed.
Caelys, who was definitely not used to such physical exertion still lay panting, head laying against the human's chest. "Oh, my dear man... we elves have no word for what it is you have done for me tonight..."
Having trouble just admitting how amazing their time together had been, the warrior let out a single, scornful 'ha'. "And here it was I thought you people have tons of words for everything."
The elf looked up, thin, delicate lips spreading into a smile. "Well, human... let us say that you have outdone all of them."
The first few weeks traveling beside the elf had been taxing to say the least. Caelys had the same vain air of authority and trumped-up sense of self importance that Dwight was familiar seeing in all of the 'fair folk', but, as the two became more familiar with one another much of that disappeared, revealing an insightful, intelligent, and surprisingly timid man who had spent so much time protected within the sheltered realm of the elves that Dwight couldn't help but feel an instinctual need to protect him. That thought made him frown inwardly; he could protect Caelys from everything but himself.
Caelys cocked his head to the side causing the long waterfall of his golden hair to slide down his shoulders like a bolt of silk and his smile was almost as bad as his follow up statement. "I am... fond of you, Dwight."
It had taken a long time for them to gain one another's trust but, once Dwight was certain that the elf was a good fit for the group it did not take long for them to find an inn... scarcely ten minutes later they were both naked and learning that Caelys was a 'good fit' for something else. It had been passionate and Dwight had certainly needed what it was the elf had provided, but a darkness settled over the warrior's mind as he came to a conclusion: he had done a great disservice to the sorcerer, and it made it hard to look Caelys in the eye. "....thanks."
The elf reached a slender hand and tucked his fingers beneath the human's firm jaw, slowly raising his head and his gaze. Dwight felt a moment of pure terror as he realized that he was far more infatuated than he'd originally planned; he'd expected a pleasant distraction... a simple fling but, as he stared into the deep, honey-colored eyes of his companion he realized that he'd gone too far... way too far. Caelys was still smiling. "What is wrong, Champion of Mine?"
The title provided to him by the elf hurt as much as anything else. Dwight had earned it when he interposed himself between the sorcerer and an owlbear threatening to tear the scrawny caster apart. It wasn't any great feat and, at first, the warrior thought that Caelys had spoken it in jest but, in that moment, he realized that there was something more to that. It made the situation hurt all the more, and the human let out a deep breath, pulling his head free from the man's fingers as he murmured "Damn me... damn me to the hells. It goes beyond the bite..."
Caelys laid his head back down on the warrior's chest. "Mmm?"
Dwight damned himself again; when the moment opened itself up to something intimate with the elf he hadn't even paused to think. Closing his eyes, the warrior extended his thoughts to the window and the moonlight filtering in through the break in the curtains. "I am sick, Caelys... and now you might be too..."
The elf laughed, the sound as musical and pure as anything Dwight had ever heard. "You are a silly, silly man, human.... you are not sick."
Giving over to just enough anger to spark the change, the warrior focused that inwardly at himself rather than to the sorcerer. His voice deepened as he growled out at his own self-loathing, fur sprouting from his naked body as he finally let his lover in on the secret he had meant to hide. "I AM sick, Caelys... I have--"
The elf tittered, not even recoiling, let alone pulling away. "Lycanthropy... of COURSE you do, foolish boy."
Despite the fact that Caelys looked at least five years his junior, the elf never passed up the chance to remind Dwight that he was, in fact, almost ten times the human's age. The fact that Caelys didn't seem even the least surprised was more than enough for Dwight to let that slide. It certainly wasn't the reaction he'd expected. "You... knew?"
The elf smiled, slowly rotating himself and hefting a leg over the werewolf's furred hips. Settling down into his lap, Caelys gently ran his fingers of one hand along Dwight's furred chest. "I am a weaver of magical energies... a student of the arcane... why would you think that I WOULDN'T know?"
Dwight's large tongue felt even larger in his muzzle as he tried to formulate any kind of answer. "If you knew, why would you--"
Caelys silenced him with a kiss. A moment later, the elf's dexterous fingers wrapped around the werewolf's thickening sheath and kept him silent with an even greater distraction.
