Jon Haums Meets the Extreme Dinosaurs

By: Raz Drakken

It's funny how life can throw you for a loop and leave you crying in one moment, then the next, have you jumping for joy. My name is Jonathan Haums and this is the story of how I became a vigilante along with meeting some new friends. Also, how I met the love of my life.

It all started two years ago when my husband and I got married. We had served in the military together; he a Marine, and I a Navy Seal. I had just left the service to pursue my own career, James Henry was a dedicated soldier. I suppose that is what I admired most about him, his sheer determination to do what was right, no matter what it costs. Not to mention striking blue eyes matched by dark brown hair and… I'm getting off track.

Anyway, he was deployed back over to Iraq after spending our first Christmas together and that was the last time I saw him alive. I remembered the day in vivid detail. It was raining that day in March when the service men came to my door. It was like being stabbed in the heart over and over again, leaving you to bleed out without succumbing to death. It was torture.

However, the worse part was to come. When I looked into the circumstances around James' death, there seemed to be several discrepancies within the investigation. It looked…as though…someone had railed the whole thing. So, I put in a call to a friend I had down at the military morgue and when he told me what the results from the autopsy, my stomach retched. My husband had been shot in the back by one of our soldiers and was covered up by the General in charge of that area. I tried going through all the legal channels, but no matter where I turned, a road block was there.

In that moment, my heart froze until all my feelings were trapped underneath a thick sheet of ice. All, but the anger and hatred, disappeared and I vowed to avenge the death of my husband. But, little did I know that the universe was about to send me a new lover into my life, and though I didn't know it at the time, it was a major turning point. One for the better.

A year after James' death, I had started to fight injustice that slipped through the cracks around the city of Lone Star, Texas. There were many times when I wanted to kill any criminal that crossed my path, but I never could. Perhaps out of some deep sense of justice, or perhaps it's because there's still a part of James hidden deep inside my heart. I don't know, but I didn't let anyone escape, except for my husband's killer. He went into hiding right after I started investigating and searching for him. The coward.

Anyway, since I started fighting crime, I had developed several gadgets and equipment to help me in my nightly hunts. Not to mention buying a flying motorcycle from some guy out in the Arizona dessert named Stegs or something. I had heard rumors about a brilliant scientist living out that way, but no more than that. As a scientist myself, I was a bit curious and it would seem that my curiosity received more than it imagined.

That night, I went out on patrol like normal. I remember standing in front of the mirror in my gear room, looking over my tall and built six feet and one-inch body. My hair was jet black and shoulder length, all tied back into a braid. White skin stood out in direct contrast with my hair and leather trench coat with a katana strapped to my back. On my head, sat a black fedora to which people in the press seem to rip on. Not like I care, I like the fedora.

Nevertheless, I went out to my launch bay and hopped onto my motorcycle, turning the key as I sat down. The engine came to life with a loud roar like that of a beast, before settling to a nice purr while I flipped a few more switches. The bay doors above me opened up to reveal a starless sky that lit up with a flash of lightning and followed closely by the rumble of thunder. The motorcycle's lift off rockets fired, causing the bike rise up out of the bay doors. I looked around, but the night made my estate hard to see clearly, even with the lights that surround it.

I pressed another button as the back rocket swung up and blasted out with greater intensity, propelling me forth. I loved the sensation of the wind in my hair and on my body as another flash of lightning accompanied by thunder occurred close by. “The storm will be here soon." I remembered saying to myself as I flew around Lone Star once before setting down on top of the tallest sky-scraper. I swung off the bike and walked over to the edge of the building, and took in the entire city before me. It seemed like it was going to be a quiet night, but I was wrong.

Another flash of lightning lit up the sky, and in that moment, I spotted three motorcycles like mine flying overhead. However, that wasn't the most bizarre thing, no, what I saw riding the bikes made no sense at all. Quickly, I ran over to my bike and hopped on. I rocketed toward the sky and gave chase to these… Well, I wasn't sure what to call them.

They looked like raptors, but more humanoid. At this point, I thought I had taken to many blows to the head and hallucinating these creatures in front of me, but I wasn't. The one on the far left was purple in color with white on his feet and hands. He had a container on his back that seemed to feed something into his maw. I couldn't make it out and didn't want to risk using the night vision goggles in case of lightning. Unlike the other two, who were wearing black spandex shorts, this raptor didn't seem to be wearing anything. The one on the far right was a maroon raptor with strange devices on his arms. I wasn't sure what those were and had never seen technology like that before. The one in the middle was yellow and seemed to have something on his maw, something metal. But, what caught my attention was the canister strapped to his back and even at this distance, I could see the nuclear warning label.

In that moment, fear gripped my heart. I didn't know how these three got their hands on a nuke, but I would be damned if I was going to let them get away with it. So, as quietly as I could, I followed them for about an hour outside of the city and started to wonder why that hadn't used the nuke there. They began their descent and finally landed in the middle of a cornfield. This was so odd. There didn't seem to be anything here and yet, this is where they landed. I landed behind a silo and hopped off my bike, peering around the edge as I saw all three descend into what looked like an old storm cellar.

Quietly, I ran over to the edge of the cellar and looked to find a long stair case, gulping down a breath of air. Ever since I was a child, I've had a slight case of claustrophobia and the prospect of being underground didn't appeal to me at all. However, I couldn't let them get away with that nuke. It was too dangerous to leave in their claws. So, down I went. The smell of old, damp earth stung my nose, but soon it was replaced by heat.

“Heat. Why am I feeling heat?" I thought to myself as looked and finally reached the bottom of the stairs. When I did, there was a faint orange glow coming from the end of a long tunnel and the more I walked towards the orange light, the more heat I felt. This seemed odd to me, but soon my confusion lifted. As I reached the mouth of the cavern, I noticed a lake of magma bubbling just a mere few meters away. Then, movement caught my eye, and I immediately ducked back behind a boulder, peeking ever so slowly over the top to see some kind of drill device aimed at the magma.

It took me a moment to figure out what they were doing, but when I did, my stomach churned. They were drilling to release gas pockets that will, in turn, raise the planets temperature. If that happened, a lot of people and animals would die and I couldn't allow that to happen. Slowly, I reached into my pocket and pulled out a flash grenade. Looking up at the ceiling, I checked to make sure it would be sturdy enough for the crazy stunt I was about to pull. I pulled the pin, tossing the flash bomb at the raptors feet and, quickly, ducked back behind the boulder with my eyes closed.

Suddenly, several things happened at once. First, the bomb went off as all three of the raptors screamed. Then, the ceiling of the cave, that I misjudged, started to crack, causing rocks to fall in random places. As this was happening, I ran out from behind the boulder with my katana drawn and used the blunt side to land knock out blows to my opponents, grabbing the canister containing the nuke soon after.

“Spitter! Where are you?!" the yellow raptor shouted.

The purple one stumbled forward and shouted, “Bad-rap, I can't see. Axel! Where are you?!

“Don't know! Can't see!" Said the maroon raptor.

I looked horrified in that moment, because I gave them my strongest strikes and they were still standing. “What in the world are these creatures?" I thought to myself. I ran as fast as I could back to my bike. Narrowly being struck by falling rocks.

I hopped onto my bike, and sky-rocketed toward the darkness above me. Suddenly, I felt a raindrop hit my face and smelled the scent of rain in the air. At the same time, I heard a scream of rage below me and could have shot myself then and there. In my haste, I had forgotten to disable their bikes. “Damn it!" I said.

Soon, I heard the roar of their bikes right behind mine. No matter how I maneuvered, I couldn't shake my assailants and heard Bad-rap shout, “Give that canister back, now mammal!"

“Not a chance!" I yelled back and hit a button on my control panel. Suddenly, an electrified net shot out and caught Spitter, launching him off of his bike.

“I'm losing my patience, mammal! Last chance, give it back!" Bad-rap demanded.

“Never!" I yelled again and pressed another button. A glob of oil shot out the back and hit Axel square in the face, causing him to lose control of his bike and crash.

Suddenly, Bad-rap had run out of patience and started firing at me with some kind of energy weapon. “What the hell is this?! Star Trek?!" I said as I did my best to dodge the blast. However, one of the blasts clipped my back rocket which forced me to make an emergency landing. Well, that was more of a nice way to say I crashed. Luckily, a haystack broke my fail as I was flung from the bike, but it didn't hurt any less.

I groaned as I looked over to see Bad-rap landing next to my bike and take the canister out of my side compartment. Quickly, I reached down and clicked a blue button on my boots, and took off running with the speed of a cheetah. As quick as lightning, I struck Bad-rap in the gut with the blunt side, causing him to double over in pain and gasping for air. I caught the canister in mid-air as I came to a stop.

“Foolish human. Today you die!" Bad-rap said as I let out a laugh.

“Do you know how many have claimed to be able to kill me? Yet, here I remain. Your threat is empty to me. However, I should warn you. I have never missed a target. My name is Jon Haums and you should back down now. I have no wish to kill you, but if you force me I will." I said, trying to sound more brave then I was scared.

“You are bold for a human! You should have been hatched a raptor, but I tire of this! It ends now!" Bad-rap said as he raised his weapon and began firing again.

I ran around him at full-speed while switching my blade from the blunt side to the sharp and sliced the weapon out of Bad-rap's hand. Bad-rap let out a roar of pain as I stopped and said, “Now, do you understand? Last chance! Withdraw!"

Bad-rap looked at me with rage in his eyes and spat, “FILTHY MAMMEL! I'LL KILL YOU!"

Quicker than I could react, Bad-rap charged me. I barely had time to bring up my katana, but not before some of his talons tore into my shoulder. I yelled out in pain as I felt the hot blood flow from my wound, but I didn't have time to think of that as I blocked another attack. However, his strength was greater than my own and needed to do something or risk dying. My left arm was on fire and pain ripped through me every time I moved it. I gritted my teeth as I reached into my pocket for my other flash grenade.

“It looks like I'm coming to see you James" I said out loud as I fumbled with the pin and heard it click. “Checkmate!"

I threw the flash grenade at our feet and closed my eyes. There was a bright flash followed directly by a loud BOOM. Bad-rap and myself were blasted in opposite directions, I hit my bike and heard several bones break upon impact. Not to mention the blinding pain I felt on that day. I looked over and saw that Bad-rap had landed in the haystack. He looked more dazzled than hurt as he rolled off the stack and stumbled towards the canister. In that moment, I cursed myself for not shoving that grenade down his throat.

Suddenly, I heard a loud sonic screech as a humanoid pterodactyl flew overhead along with four other humanoid dinosaurs. At this point, I couldn't make out much due to the amount of blood loss, but at least they seemed to be helping. This was my last thought as I faded into unconsciousness. At least, I hope they are helping me.

To be continued…
