Lud recounts his darkest mission - the one that cost him his soul, and a dear friend.

I saw a young male today.. a newly joined warrior. His training was more to muscle and infiltration than mine of spy work and.. darker practices.

Tall – not like a Battle Warrior – but a good 10 foot. Black fur with markings on his chest and eye-ruffs. His eyes a brilliant green. It shook me as I though I had seen a ghost. No.. he died years ago..

As he passed me the memories came back and I staggered and stumbled. Quickly he came to my aid and a deep but accented voice said “Master.. Are you well."

Still in my thoughts I replied “Yes.. Tevari.. I am well."

He looked at me and smiled – Oh that smile.. “Have we met before Master – you know me but I do not know you." Gently he led me to a bench and sat – concerned that my ailment was physical.. not mental. Quietly – my eyes holding back the tears under my hood I replied “I once knew of a fine young warrior called Tevari with the same accent."

He chuckled “I have often been told I resemble my Sire. He died before I was born but my family always spoke of how he gave his life in honor to the King – we do not know what he did only that he is held in high regard here. When of age I asked if I could follow his footsteps and here I am. I would love to hear of him.. Please"

The facts were still sealed and until he completed his training I could say nothing – so I patted his hand and simply said “He was a good Honorable male.. that I also called a friend. You better attend to your studies Young Male."

He thanked me and left… And so I now put quill to parchment and write of the darkest days of my existence – in that I have the blood of innocents on my hands, and the blood of a dear friend.

Our Guild keeps careful records of lineages for the various noble families. We keep track of which bloodlines are joined – and the effects on their descendants. We have been doing this for centuries.

So it was noted that several hundred years ago a Duke. Duke Aranrg seemed to exceptionally quarrelsome with his neighbors. When his son became Duke – this duke tried to start a war, aggressively invading his neighbors. He had one son – who likewise when coming with age took the Dukedom (his father passing…. Suddenly) – and is showing the same traits of violence. The new Duke had taken a dislike to any none Lupion in his county and we were getting troubling reports that Charkens and Humans were 'disappearing'.. their businesses burning, and families trying to flee. And.. he had taken a lifemate and she had born him two sons..

The Guild was secretly called to the King and tasked with removing this bloodline – including the infants, lest their natures lay in their bloodline rather than by nurturing..

The Guild thought long and hard about this – we do have rules. In the case of infants we try and take them and put them in loving families – but more than three generations have shown the same affliction – so their fate was sealed. Since the dukes and his ancestors had a history of paranoia – their castle was an impregnable fortress – the Dukes quarters being a small tower at the top of the keep. The architects were long dead and his guards were fanatically loyal to him. This was an infiltration and assassination mission – with a low probability of survival.

I, and a warrior called Tevari were selected. Not that the Guild wanted to send us to our deaths – they had every confidence that IF there was a way to survive – we would.. but in our respective fields we were the best.

Tevari was a tall, 10 foot tall block of muscle – but his frame hid an agility and an ability to work with ropes. I knew of him and now was working alongside of each other. We became friends – trusting each other with our lives. I learnt that he was born in a sailing family and was climbing the rigging as soon as he could walk.

He had a pleasant baritone black fur with markings, and a wonderful lilting accent that was almost a song. We went to various Taverns to relax when we could (one day he followed me to my preferred drinking spot but never showed any discomfort with the activities there. He ended up taking a very happy serving female to the rooms and returned grinning from ear to ear)

We had a month to prepare, and it was hard. My muscles ached from stretching and climbing – often practicing climbing over Tevari up and down walls, and he climbing over me. Pitons and ropes were studied – myself learning the various sailing knots and their purpose.

I could say so much about him here. His open friendliness, good humor. He would joke that I was the Brains and he the Brawn – neglecting his own keen intelligence. His large hand would pat me on the head – teasingly ruffling my ears. And yet when a Warrior had an issue with my height – lifted me up on to his own shoulders so I could stare down the warrior Eye to Eye!!!

The plan was also coming together – it would be in two parts.

Firstly – a Ryten vessel would bring us in to the harbor as part of a normal commerce run. I could pull in a favor there.

Once in the city I would play different roles. A begging child wailing on the street corner looking for his disappeared mother. An old woman lamenting that the friendly 'Other' folks have all gone. A beggar begging for coin because his Charkan employers' shop had burned. All things to keep in the public's mind this was Happening!

Tevari would play his part.. Drinking at Taverns hearing, and generating gossip on the cruelties. How the Duke was victimizing 'Good, Honest, Hardworking Folk not of Lupion blood'

On the night before we left I made my way over to Tygar and we and a tearful (and very physical) farewell. I explained that I may not be coming back – but I loved him.

Tevari went to the docks where there was a relative's ship in dock. One of the females on board was in season.. and so insisted that he spent the night so that his bloodline could be kept through her. The next morning we met again – both of us sore but joking about it – and boarded the Ryten's vessel.

I had tactfully explained to Tevari the concept of Ryten's society and that he may view male to male sex- but he did not seem to be at all troubled about it. However we were given our own quarters so we did not have to share the communal bed on the ship. (Ryten's do all sleep together. Curled up happily so that if one leaves to go on shift.. the returning one will find a warm bed and caring arms to welcome him back)

It was the third day that the storm hit. It was dark.. lightening and thunder. Tevari and I were strapped in our cabin when there was a crash and the ship shuddered. Instantly – clad only in his loin cloth – Tevari leapt up and out of his bed. I followed likewise clad. One of the hatches was broken and a length of a spar jutted in to it.

Grabbing a length of rope Tevari tied it around his waist and did the same for me. “Never move unless you have this tied to something.. Understand". I nodded – and then he was gone.

Standing on the deck – it was chaos. The rigging down and sails flapped. The Stalwart shouting instructions and the crew racing to follow them. As I watched a wave swept a crewman overboard – and he clung to the side of the ship by his safety rope but being battered by the waves. I made it to him and reached over – grabbing his hand and pulling him up. He hugged me – chittering something too quick to hear and then raced to complete his task.

Tevari meanwhile had made his way to the bridge, shoved aside two struggling crewmen and was using his immense strength to take the ship's wheel. The Stalwart looked at him then bellowed orders in Lupion – pointing which way to steer. Myself – I hit the rigging and climbed – holding a rope here, supporting an arm there – we all fought the storm.. And WON!!!!

After several hours it eased and we had the vessel partially re-rigged and sailing true. Tired Ryten staggered to sleep and.. rejoice in the companionship of their crewmates.

Tevari and myself made our way to our quarters however several Ryten hands gripped ours – gently tugging as if to ask that we join them in the burrow. Tevari smiled gently and shook his head and although I would love to be surrounded by warm bodies – this was not the time – so we both went to our beds.

As we lay there – we could hear the moans and chittering through the walls as they re-affirmed their love for each other and the burrow. Tevari said “They sound like they are enjoying themselves.. Shame they are all male." I chuckled “From what I have seen of the males – a warrior like you would split a female Ryten crotch to throat.. We.. are just too large."

We were silent for a bit, but I noticed Tevari easing his loin cloth down to expose his sheath – trying to stroke himself without being obvious. I whispered “Tevari – please – we are both Lupion males. We understand our body's needs. I will not be offended." I watch out of the corner of my eye as he shifted to a more comfortable position and started to stoke himself.. then stopped and sighed

“I.. I feel embarrassed doing this.. Lud.. I.."

I stood and moved over to him – gripping the arm that held his maleness “Tevari.. May I" and looked into his eyes. We stared at each other for a moment and then sighing he lay back and released the grip around his member.

He was a beautiful male – long, hard, a good 11 inches. A pointed tip flaring out wider, then slowly narrowing down to the bulge still within his sheath. To me he was not just a handsome male.. but Tevari – one who I cared about, would fight to the death for, and he the same for me.

I stroked him – remembering all the little caresses I had learnt on Rekan's maleness. Then I ducked and used my tongue and muzzle. He groaned and I could taste his flavors – a heavy hand reached down to my head but it did not force me to deep throat him – rather it stroked my head and muzzle, played with my ears.. all tender touches. His bulge swelled and slipped from his sheath.. it widened – filled out – and finally he cried out “LUD.. I'm.." and filled my muzzle.

We stayed a while – me licking and stroking.. Him rubbing my ears. I brought him to another shuddering climax where he cried my name again, and at that fell in to a deep and restful sleep.

I stood – wiping my own seed from my hands and returned to my bed.

I would have though that this was a once off – a mature male needing release – but the next night he shed his loin cloth before climbing in to his bed – looking at me and smiling.. Not the expectant smile of someone looking to jet seed and sleep – but one who wanted to share.

I climbed up next to him and tried to kiss but he turned his muzzle. The same when I put his hands on my sheath. Finally I lay on his legs and took him in to my muzzle again. This time he thrust – slowly, gently, lovingly. His hands found my shoulders and stroked my muzzle. Fondled my ears, and then he arched his back and groaned my name as I drank of his flavors. I had already spent myself rubbing against his shins so we fell asleep in each other's arms.

(Dear reader – if you have been following my journals you may be asking why I do not let a male Lupion mount me. It is more the question.. of physics rather than desire. Even though I have trained myself to accommodate hiding things in my anal cavity, a full grown warrior has.. a sizable weapon and both it's length and the girth of his swelling is beyond myself. Nor do I want to risk the damage that a passionate warrior could inflict when he involuntarily thrust in his climax. Though I will say this.. Tygar has learnt to be quite.. skilled.. in the use of his Charken nodules during our matings.)

The next morning we reached to port and it was time to start our mission. The vessel would remain in port until we had finished and take us home.. Or flee if the situation required it. I had to smile when the Stalwart pulled Tevari down to his level and announced that he was now a “Member of Burrow Treyan" – rubbing his muzzle along Tevari's to mark his scent. Tevari almost blushed at the honor and likewise welcomed the vessel and crew into his own family – telling them to speak the name of Tevari SwiftSail if they ever had need of assistance. Diplomacy is so often brought about by these little deeds that great a ceremony can never manage.

And so we worked. We met once a day, but in different locations. A colored shirt hung from a window told us the place and time. Other simple signals told other things. A black shirt meant that all was lost and RUN!!! – but it never came to that. We stoked, argued, muttered. I used all my disguises to spread discord and ill will towards the Duke. Who started to fill the streets with his most loyal troops.

It was working – the populace being tired of seeing their friends, good folks adopted in to their own families, and business they frequented disappearing. The fuse had been set and all it needed was the Duke to light it.. And he did.

I apologize for what I must write here Dear Reader – but these words MUST be written.

A troop of the Dukes men on horse back were trotting along the main street when a Charkan cub – no more than 7 or 8 ran out in front of them. One of the soldiers took his pike and speared the youngster and hoisted it high like a trophy – the cub still alive - screaming - it blood and entrails hanging down – and finally.. painfully died then and there. An angry shout, a rock thrown, and then on mass the populace took out their anger.

I.. I will say that I helped fuel this anger and point it to the Duke but in NO way my actions caused the death of that poor innocent cub. But it was My rock – and my aim was True – the holder of the pike fell.. stunned.. and at the mercy of the crowd. It had begun!!

Tevari and I had been in contact with the resistance – and they knew that they had the support of the King, and we had given them supplies and much knowledge on how to fight.. But it was now Their fight.. We had to excise the rot from within.

Racing back to the dock – my Ryten friends were already pulling up anchor – hoping that the riots would not reach them. As soon as we were a 100 yards from the dock – a small rowboat was dropped out of view and 6 strong armed Ryten rowed us around to the back of the Keep.. and the Duke's chambers.

Tevari assembled a Vertut (I think you would call this a crossbow – but built to be loaded and fired by a full Lupion warrior – a terrifying weapon indeed), loaded it with a metal stave, pulley and guide wire and fired. The first had little purchase and came loose but the second flew true – to a rafter jutting out from the Duke's chambers.

A larger rope was attached and run through – then the brave rowers got as close to the rocks and crashing waves as they dared to let us off. What we now had running though the pully was a loop of rope. Fortunately, the pulley was ratcheted one way so as we climbed up the walls we could take up the slack. Once Tevari slipped and this saved him from death since he could hang whilst grasping the rock and finding new toeholds.

By now we could hear the clamoring of the townsfolk, the cries of the guard. The keep had three floors and the Dukes chamber had an additional two on top of that. From the sounds the first floor of the keep was overrun forcing the guard to move upwards. By the time we reached the rafters outside of the Dukes chambers I could smell smoke.

Carefully we looked in through a window – It was the Duke's bed chambers – furthest from the doors. He was trying to prepare some ropes to escape though the very window we were entering from.

The Duke was a huge burly 15 foot warrior – wearing metal and leather armor. Fortunately, Tevari and I were likewise clad – myself in Tygar's custom leatherwork.

Tevari crept over the sill and with a roar launched himself at the Duke – who with surprising agility ducked and swatted Tevari away. Then the Duke picked up a big battle axe and their fight began. Shouts, roars, metal against metal.. and blood – as I ducked by my muzzle was sprayed with blood – I could not tell whose, but I hoped it was the Duke.

Around the corner I crept – noting that the door to the outside was locked and barred – some kind of locking mechanism told me that the Duke had sealed himself inside. Outside his warriors and the towns folks screamed, fought, and died. Suddenly I heard a loud 'WUMP' followed by shrill screams. I heard the Duke yell – “Seletr.. Get the Cubs.. They've lit the Oil - The Fools!!"

I saw a stairwell leading to a second floor and raced up there to find.. Seletr – the Duke's mate.

She stood in the doorway blocking my way “Get away from my Cubs" she snarled.. and lunged. I was able to duck and spin – landing a kick to her head to stun her. She collapsed as I ran in to the chamber to the cribs..

I stood there – looking at the two cubs swaddled in towels, their eyes closed as they slept. I closed my eyes cursing in every tongue I knew.. I cursed the God for giving them the bloodline of madness. I cursed my Guild for selecting me for this task.. I finally cursed myself for what I was about to do.. Then I drew a needle and quickly pricked into one frail neck, then the next.

Because my attention was so much on the cubs I did not see the dagger strike, my leathers absorbed much of it but it still went deep into my side.

“I TOLD YOU TO KEEP AWAY FROM THEM" she screamed – now standing – armed with a blade dripping with my blood in between me and the cribs..

I looked at her – tears in my eyes “Its.. Too late. It is done. They felt nothing." I quietly said.

She spun – looking at the still forms lying then, knelt and lifted her muzzle and let look a long drawn out howl of despair. I let her finish before I sliced her throat – silencing her grief forever.

I breathed in and coughed.. I was in agony but my cough contained no blood. Good – no lung wound. Staggering out I rolled down the stairs. The smoke was getting thicker, and I collapsed onto the floor which was now hot to the touch. I tried to stand but my legs would not support me. Tevari – Where was he.

Crawling across the floor to the Duke's bedchambers I saw a body on the floor, as I got nearer it was Tevari, in a bad way. An axe blow had severed a leg just below his knee, and he had lost a hand as well. He was still alive and aware. “Tevari.. The Duke?" I asked, he nodded “Dead.. my sword in his chest.. the cubs?" “Likewise – never felt a thing.."

I looked over to a window to see the flames licking at the sill, the door was well alight now and the floor was burning my knees. I tried to drag him to a cooler spot so I could think but I could not move him.. “Lud.. Leave – save yourself. I am done" he coughed, spitting blood. Looking down at him my eyes filled with tears “I'm.. I'm out of needles my friend – but I have this" and showed a small dagger. He smiled in his pain – the scent of scorched fur assaulting my nostils, then he reached up to my head and pulled me close – kissing me deeply and passionately “Lud.. Lud I.. You are a braver male than I.. I only wish I had the courage to do this before.. I.. I Love you". I pulled back and looked deep into his green eyes and drew the blade across his throat – still locking my gaze to him as the life faded from his.

Rolling back I looked around. Smoke, flames – there was no escape except.. maybe.. I dragged my self to the privy and lifted the heavy lid. The tunnel was narrow and I might just.. The sound of crackling timber made me look up – Tevari's body and the floor disappeared down to the floor below – jetting flames to the ceiling. Cursing I rolled in and pulled the heavy lid over me.

In agony I tried to go down but made it a few feet to when it was too narrow. Looking around in the flickering light I saw a pintle stone.. Maybe.. I took my dagger and chipped out the mortar – well rotted from years of urine and other fluids. Finally pressing my back against the wall I pushed with all my might against the loosened rocks and And AND – they moved, falling away to reveal daylight. A few more shoves and more rocks fell away – And I was out.

Out as in I was now outside and clinging to the walls. Nearby hung the rope that we scaled up and I swung myself over to it and try to make my way down. I was able to make it halfway when I felt the rope jerk – looking up to see the roof was alight – the rafter we secured the rope to was burning. Looking down I saw it was high tide with the waves hurling themselves against the jagged rocks. I was tired, dizzy, trying to time the movements so I would hit water instead of rocks.. and released.

I fell facing the ground – the jagged spikes eagerly awaiting my flesh and bone. Closer.. closer.. then a mass of water covered them and cushioned my fall.

Stripping off my sodden leathers I drifted furclad on the water. The keep was well alight and the tower had since collapsed in on itself. Nobody.. Nobody would know of Tevari's sacrifice except myself and the Guild. I gave into grief then – closing my eyes and adding my salt to the seas – not caring where I drifted to..

I was aware of excited voices and rough hands grabbing me.. Quick phrases in Ryten too fast for me to catch except my name “Lud.. Lud.. Qutesf Hytrrs Nifhds?" I opened my eyes to see a group of rodent muzzles peering down at me. Suddenly they were push aside by the Stalwart “Lud.. Can You Hear Me?" I feebly nodded and then drifted away.

I awoke – surrounded by warm bodies that clung to me, hands that pressed on to all parts of me. I could see bindings and bandages on my limbs.. then it came to me.. I was in the ship's burrow – each of the warm bodies was a Ryten wishing, praying their lifeforce into my battered being. I openly wept at their kindness. One of them looked to see me weeping and quietly asked “Tevari?" I shook my head and wept more – to hear the rest of the crew gently croon the song of passing.

By then time we made it to my home port I was able to walk – abet slowly – and left my burrow mates. I will not go too far into details but suffice they wore my scent as proudly as I did theirs. Clutched in to my hand was a folded fabric for me to carry with me - a reminder that I had another home, in an island, far far from here where I was loved and respected for being the male Lud.. Not for who or what I did.. Just Lud.

My recovery was long and painful – I pushed myself to be the male that I had been before so I could again protect my people.. and my King.

In time when I spoke with the King himself.. I told him of the sacrificed that Tevari made and gained a promise (I did not have to argue hard at all – he is a kind and just King) that his family know of his passing and that a gift from the crown be given to them. I am told that a Royal Seal and a yearly stipend was set up .. and by the King's command - a small tower on the East side of the castle – one that catches the morning light as the sun rises is called Tevari SwiftSail keep. It is used by our guard to hail and greet arriving ships.

And this now bring me to full circle.. I jot down my journal and look from my windows to see the new warriors exercising – and I can see the younger Tevari lifting his muscular frame up and down and vow that someday- when he is older I will tell him everything.. Everything that his father and I had shared. I owe it to my friend.
