What Measures a Heart, ch. 7
#7 of What Measures a Heart
Chapter 7 - The Delivery
It had been 105 days since Erica had become pregnant. She was nearing her due date. Levi was at his wit's end. He catered to Erica's every whim out of his own free will. She continued to push how unnecessary it would be for him to stay by her side every hour of every day, but he ignored this as if it were the wind through the spring trees. It was nearly night when it happened - a pressure began to well up in the young griffoness's gut.
"Levi! I think the baby is coming!"
"Shit, shit, shit, shit!!"
"Okay, the car is ready!"
"Let's go, man!"
"He's in the car already!"
"Okay, okay!"
Lena drove at the highest speed her blue mini-van would allow, stopping at every light the easiest pace she was able to muster - at least, until she neared the hospital.
Sirens.
"Motherfu- ugh!" Leva growled, pulling over to the side of the road.
The police vehicle pulled up beside them, an officer stepping He approached them with his flashlight and gun drawn.
Speaking in an annoyed tone, the officer proposed a sarcastic, "Hey, you didn't stop at that light. Is someone having a baby or are you drunk!?"
"AAAH!!!"
As he jumped back, the officer pointed his gun towards Leva, only to realize he had made a mistake upon Erica's words, "Umm... guys... I think my water broke."
"Wait... Son of a bitch, you're that girl our pal Levi knocked up! Screw the ticket, I'm getting the paramedics with the most damn experience in delivery from the station here ASAP! Trust me when I say hospitals are over-rated when it comes to this!" The officer's no-longer gruff but now-concerned tone was a welcome sound to hear.
Ten minutes passed, a white and orange van pulling to the side of the road, a white nekomata emerging along with a blackish-green-furred, violet-winged pegasus, both dressed in paramedic gear.
"Okay, please help her into the vehicle," the nekomata requested in a sweet and compassionate voice.
Nodding, Eric and Levi helped Erica into the van, ignoring her now-damp sweat pants.
"Okay, first of all, you don't want to force it...."
"I know... I... waTCHED videos on it... BeFORe..."
"Okay, do you feel like something is pushing on an opening inside you?"
"Y-yes..."
"Good. Tell me when you feel you feel it go through the opening."
"O-okAY...!"
"Squeeze my had if you need to, Sis."
"Mine too."
"Okay..."
An hour passed.
"A---GH! I... it... happened..."
"Okay... now, when I say push, push."
"Gh... o-oKAy..."
"OOOWWW!!!"
"Okay, the beak is through..."
"AH--OOW!"
"Okay, here's the head. You're almost there... just one more push!"
"It feels like it's on fi----re!"
"One more, come on!"
"GA HAAAAAA!!!!"
"It's over Erica. Cut the cord, Ulrich."
"Got it..."
"Gh... I feel so weak...," Erica groaned in lethargy.
In response, Levi gently handed the baby hybrid to its mother with the soft words, "It's a girl. We get to call her Emilia.""
"Emilia... so amazing. Look , she has a muzzle, but it has some of my purple beak in its side...," Erica pointed out through her panting breath.
Levi nodded, happily adding, "And my hazel eyes."
"Don't forget the scarlet scales instead of fur on her lower body, man." This comment was from Eric.
Looking to his best friend with a shocked expression, Erica could only muster a shocked, "You... watched the whole thing?"
Shrugging, Eric responded with a nonchalant, "Hey, sis', it's not the grossest thing I've seen after watching a spotted hyena pop a kid out on The Ascertainment Channel. THAT was gross."
"So... his feathers are brownish... like my mom's...," Erica sighed in somber joy, stroking the young hybrid's back gently, receiving a soft yawn in return.
Eric nodded, with an empathetic, "I'm sure they're really proud of ya' sis. You too bro."
"Yeah..."
Epilogue
As time went by, Levi and Erica became closer than they'd ever dreamed. They were brought together by very inopportune circumstances, but all in all, they were grateful for it. The two had rough patches, but they knew it would happen, and they were prepared to deal with such things.
Over time, the two discovered more and more about each other. Some things they were each slightly disturbed of, yet others they were amazed and ecstatic to know.
After a suggestion from Leva a year later, the two decided they would marry. They agreed without a second thought.
The two began their life as a newlywed couple, and soon, their second child was on its way.
They were family, possibly brought together by fate.
