CH 1
The Beginning
This is the tragic story of an agent in our nation's government. To them, he was known as SUBJECT 5. But his real name is Aeddan Smith. Our story begins with a scrawny, nerdy looking, scrap of a folf at a young age of 15 in an orphanage. You see, Aeddan's parents were killed in an accident that should have killed both them and Aeddan, but somehow he survived. Aeddan was always picked on and bullied by the other orphans because for his size and because of his size he couldn't fight back or stand up for himself. So Aeddan usually had a bruise, cut, scrape, or black eye. So Aeddan didn't have any friends, but this didn't bother him when he was reading. Aeddan loved to read, and this also got him bullied quite a bit too. This went on for some time before that fateful day on a cold winter night....
Aeddan was walking home on that fateful night from the public high school he attended every day; except for the week ends of course. He would have been walking back earlier but he had gotten himself shoved into his locker again, and if it hadn't been for that nice, old panther janitor that stayed after school to clean up, Aeddan would have spent the night at the school. The route Aeddan took was usually quite a busy street during the evening hours. But the deep snow and swirling winds made it dangerous for any cars that might be traveling that road so Aeddan hadn't noticed the sound of the large armored truck slowly pulling up behind him. Before Aeddan could even say "huh?" he was gagged and blind folded and then tossed in to back of the armored truck where some unknown paws and hands held him down, bound him, and stuck a needle in him. After that, it was nothing but cold and darkness.
Aeddan awoke sitting still gagged, blind folded, and bound only now he had a heavy throbbing in his head and the feeling of motion underneath him; not the best combination. Aeddan retched a little but couldn't throw up.
"That's right, Taurus stole my breakfast from me and then Billy took my lunch money. I haven't eaten in a while" Aeddan thought as whatever he was riding in hit a bump.
Something soft and warm swayed into to him from his right. It pulled away quickly like it was just as startled to find him sitting there as well. Aeddan scooted closer to whoever was sitting next him and as best he could, moved his paws to where he thought the other's was at. At first the other one cringed and tried to pull away. Aeddan nudged the other a bit trying to re-assure it that it was ok and he was friendly. Reluctantly, the one next to him came closer and took his paw in it's and there they sat, quietly. Waiting for their journey to end and for whatever fate had in store for them.
The ride was becoming long, hard, and depressing. The occasional whimpers or whines from the other unseen occupants didn't help matters either. Aeddan had been living at the orphanage a long while and over the years, he had become accustomed to the different sounds or vocalizations that the other orphans made and could pick out who, or what, made the sound. And from the mix in the armored truck, Aeddan could discern that there were at least 8 other captives in the vehicle with him and, what he now considered his friend, the unknown being next to him. Among the captives, Aeddan believed there were a couple felines, a skunk, a ram, two other canis species besides himself, possibly an aquatic hybrid, and a dragon. The one whose paw he was holding was undefined because it hadn't made a sound since they met. As the vehicle began to slow, the other captives began to make inquisitive sounds. By the time the truck had stopped, the inside of the vehicle was a chaotic jumble of muffled squawks, woofs, meows, and many other number of animal sounds. But still nothing from the one next to Aeddan. Aeddan's ears tilted to the sound of, what he assumed, the doors of the armored truck opening. Hands grabbed him roughly and he had the short sensation of falling and then the sensation of hitting the hard but pliable ground with a thump. Aeddan heard a few more thumps hit the ground next to him. Aeddan counted nine thumps in total.Their gages were removed, and the noise that followed was chaotic and loud, then a growling voice boomed out:
"Alright shut your yaps. I'll make it sweet and to the point. You have been dumped in a training biome for soldiers of our nation's government. Here you will learn to survive...or die trying."
The voice paused here for a few seconds to let the thought sink in before it went on to say:
"Other groups have been gathered and dropped in the surrounding area and are being given the same pre-prepared speech. You will receive two combat knives, three canteens of water, a day worth of rations, a map, and a compass."
The voice paused again, this time longer than usual. It was almost as if it was waiting for something.
"How long will be out here?" someone said, Aeddan could hear the others turning to look at him. "Wait, did I say that?" Aeddan thought "did I really just..."
"I am glad someone here has the mind to ask questions. You will be out here until the current governing body is satisfied with the results. Throughout the area, supply crates have been hidden. You just have to find them. Here are your supplies" the sound of a bag hitting the ground almost next him reached Aeddan's ears, "now it's time to go. Oh and one more thing. This is a survival mission. Each team has ten members. And only two teams can survive. And I mean _ONLY_two teams can survive. Good luck team. And may the best warriors win." The voice finished.
With that, the sound of the voice's feet were heard walking past, getting into the vehicle, then shutting the door. The last sound Aeddan heard before the silence that followed was the vehicle starting up, and pulling away. Leaving him and nine others stranded, bound, and blind folded.
So I didn't put this in the original copy of this chapter because I didn't start writing these in until the 2nd chapter. But I guess a brief explaination on why this chapter is so short is in order. The reason being, that it was my first time ever writing an in-depth story with a plot, multiple characters, and something longer than maybe 3 pages long. I once acctualy started to write a story back when I was 15 and even then the chapters were short because I had no concept of what chapters should realy look like. But after reading a lot of books I got the general idea. One of the other reasons this chapter was so short was that I think I just wanted something up there to start from. Kind of like laying the ground work or cellar for a house you know? Well any ways, for those of you reading this I just wanted to say thanks for reading the first chapter and I promise the chapters are getting longer so just read when you can. And send me those comments and questions via PMs or Shout box them. I'm on every day so you might get a response rather fast. Thanks again and as they say on SF and the internet: "keep those paws moving".
