James patted his thick draft horse's neck and dismounted with a swift leap for a big man, using his wings. He was hitching his stallion to the post outside his father's cohort's mage tower when an interesting man pulled up on his own exotic beast; a dark-furred saber tooth tiger, which the purple-skinned elf tied next to James' slightly uneasy horse; James comforted his war beast, who settled down. The elf raised an eyebrow at him and they both turned, weapons readied, as the doors to the mage tower flew open, revealing an intensely handsome man about their age in a dark red robe; fire and ice swirled around him as he studied them.

"Ahhh, you must be James and Sontarian, yes." Guile FoxBlood said as he pointed to each of them; James sheathed his dual blades and recalled his lightning magic and Sontarian silenced his shadow priest magic and replaced his staff on his back.

"You're FoxBlood? When do we start, I'm bored." The elf sneered impatiently. Guile threw back his head and laughed.

"Oh, in time. I need to see if you're both any good first, I don't care who recommended you. Here." Guile tossed James a big cloth sack. "I need herbs for my potions. Back there, in the Thorny Forest. It's dangerous."

The elf laughed mockingly.

"I'm not your errand boy, I came here to learn more magic, to get powerful, not to be your bitch." Sontarian snarled, showing sharp fangs. FoxBlood smirked at him as James watched Sontarian with interest.

"Oh, I do like your attitude, elf, but I'm going to need a little cooperation first. Humor me, men." Guile chuckled with a smirk, with a dismissing gesture and a flail of his long robe he went back into his tower. Sontarian was fuming as he got back on his huge saber cat; James mounted his Percheron again.

"This is ridiculous, who is he to talk to me like that? I'm leaving." Sontarian muttered. James rode up so he was alongside the elf.

"That's understandable, but I think the forest is this way anyway, why don't you accompany me, and if you still feel that way later, you can go on ahead." James offered cordially.

"Why, are you scared?" Sontarian mocked. James blushed shyly and rubbed his thick black hair.

"Well...I...okay, maybe a teeny bit, but really, mostly I just want you to get a shot with FoxBlood, he's a friend of my father's, and he's really ruthless." James encouraged. Sontarian scoffed, but hesitated, grasping the leather reins of his cat mount.

"Fine, but I reserve the right to leave at any time, and you're doing most of the herb finding, that's beneath me." The elf said with irritation.

"I'm no herbalist, but I'll try my best. Come on Thunder, hyah boy!" James called, his horse neighed and took off at a gallop; Sontarian eyed them, secretly impressed a huge horse carrying an equally huge man could run that swiftly.

"NightFang, after them!" Sontarian snarled, his own mount roared and took off swiftly, and soon the men were deep in the perilous woods searching for the herbs Sorcerer FoxBlood had requested. James did a surprisingly quick job of finding the plants and Sontarian aided him, and soon the huge man's sack was stuffed with the deadly herbs and roots.

"I think we got it, let's head back." James said cheerfully, suddenly their mounts vocalized and both men looked up in time to see a massive ogre coming up on their position, two clubs in his hands and one huge eye looking at them.

"Me smash puny humies!" The dumb brute cried, Sontarian growled, his hands glowing purple as he cast a flesh-wasting spell on the creature.

"I'm an elf, you useless dimwit!" Sontarian hissed, casting multiple ticking spells on their foe as James got in front of his new ally protectively, drawing both his blades and spreading his ebon angel wings to call the beast off the elf and onto him; it worked, James let his lightning magic cover his wings and his twin blades as he lured the ogre to him and away from the more vulnerable spellcaster.

"That's it, come to me!" James snarled loudly, he deflected the blows from the ogre with his thick swords and cut at his stump-like legs and belly, drawing blood as Sontarian continued adding damage over time spells onto the big dumb thing.

"Ahh, me smash you!" The ogre screamed, and tried, but James, yet unbeknownst to him, who actually had some half-ogre DNA in him, was so strong and large he was able to block the blows from the brute's huge clubs with his own blades and hold them back with effort.

"Impressive! Now, die!" Sontarian cried, casting more disease spells onto the enemy's flesh. The ogre yelled in pain as James attacked with his blades and Sontarian with his magic; the ogre started to retreat, realizing the pair were beating him. James sheathed his swords and let him go, but Sontarian kept casting, a huge smirk on his face showing his deadly fangs. James watched Sontarian as he kept draining the life out of the ogre, finally it ran out of range of his spells and he watched it leave with a smile.

"If you come back, I will kill you!" He called. "Carebear." Sontarian shot at James, as they mounted up, and James chuckled and blushed and gave him a curious smile. When they returned to the tower, Guile was waiting for them. He went through the sack.

"I saw your battle and victory over the ogre, well done." Guile said with a big grin.

"He was a fucking joke." Sontarian sneered.

"I see." Foxblood replied.

"As a reward, I'll make you," Guile pointed to the elf, "A potion that will enable your casted shadow spell to drain the life out of your foe and into you."

"Like a warlock? Amazing!" Sontarian said with a huge grin and gesture, James grinned at him, happy for him.

"And you," Foxblood pointed to James, who grinned boyishly at him, "A potion that will make thorns sprout from your armor and weapons, impaling your foe as they try to attack you."

"I'm honored sir, thank you so much." James replied with a gallant bow, both of them standing next to their mounts and holding the reins.

"Good!" Guile said with a hint of sarcasm, "Come back here in two days for your reward potions, and I'll have another quest for you both, with another goody at the end, of course. Nice to meet you, boys. I'll tell your sponsors you did well." Guile cast a spell and gold was deposited into both men's coinsacks, James gasped in amazement and gave a hearty wave and Sontarian just gave a smug smirk.

"Well then, warrior, I'll see you in two days." Sontarian said, mounting his cat as James climbed atop his strong horse.

"It was a pleasure tanking for you, Sontarian, I'm looking forward to training by your side under Mr FoxBlood."

"So formal." Sontarian mocked, and with a loud laugh and screamed commands at his mount he bounded away. James gave him a wave and a parting shout and cantered away on Thunder; from atop his tower window, Guile FoxBlood watched the men ride off on diverging roads with an interested gaze.
