** My Roommate is a Furry

Chapter 1 Pilot

by RVasil**

It was a dark and quiet night.

Somewhere in an undisclosed location inside an inconspicuous warehouse, Alex found himself waking up. His head ached and felt like it was threatening to split in two. A groggy groan escaped from his lips as he blinked his eyes open. A lone light bulb that was suspended in the hair swayed above him, keeping the darkness of the somewhat spacious area at bay. “W-where am I…?" he croaked out, his throat completely and utterly parched. He tried to move, only to realize his hands were bound by rope, tied to the wooden chair he was seated in. His legs were also secured by rope, preventing him from moving completely. “W-what?!" He tried to struggle, but no amount of shaking was loosening the rope at all. It only ended up chafing against his arms.

Finally able to clear the daze he was in, his memory began to come back to him, if only by bits and pieces. He was at the mall, enjoying his afternoon after a somewhat trying day from college. He was in the company of his friend and they were basically just biding their time and enjoying each other's company. He shook his head, feeling his headache slowly disappear. After that, they bid each other farewell and he made his way back to the dormitory and then…

The sound of footsteps echoing on the concrete floor grabbed Alex's attention. His head snapped up and he turned his head to the source of the noise. A man's figure made its way towards him, walking through the stacks of boxes that reached up to the roof.

“Ah, you're finally awake," he said, as he made his way towards the light. Alex found himself staring at a black suited man. He was reminded of those 'Men in Black' sort of deals that were normally associated with government conspiracies. The man carried himself with an air of authority, sneering down at him with a certain level of disgust. Alex was left confused, wondering why the man had it in for him. “I was wondering when you would wake up." Alex watched the man carefully as he stood in front of him, resting his weight on one of his legs and placing his other hand on his side. “It's nice to finally meet you."

A man in black was happy to meet him. Alex wasn't sure if this was a good thing or a bad thing. But given the fact that he was tied to a chair right now, and the person greeting him looked like something straight out of a mafia movie probably drove that point to the latter. The fact that the suit was wearing a fedora that blocked his eyes made it more obvious.

“...Do I know you?" Alex asked.

“You don't?" The man in black looked a bit surprised, cocking his head to the side. “Normally your kind knows who we are."

Your kind? “What in the world are you talking about? I have no idea who you are man," Alex spat out. “What do you even want from me? Is this a kidnapping?" That last question was rhetorical. Alex felt a bit better at the fact that his captors were kind enough not to gag him. Whatever was going on, he was glad that he was still alive. It looked like he was in some deep ass stuff. He tried to strain his hands behind the chair. There had to be some way he can escape out of this.

“Funny you ask those questions when you already know the answer to them." The man paced to his right and then stopped before saying, “or should at least know about them."

“And so, what happens now?"

The man in black smiled at him, sending a shiver down Alex's spine. “Playing dumb are we? Well, it's fine. They all act the same anyway." The man reached into his pocket and pulled out something silver and metallic. At first, Alex thought it was a handgun. But it wasn't. Or at least, it wasn't the type that held bullets. The best could he describe it was that it was a gun that had two large clear tubes attached to it that was designed to hold liquids. One was empty, and the other was filled with a clear greenish liquid. Not only was he kidnapped, but he was getting drugged as well. This was going seriously way off the deep end now.

“Dude, dude, seriously," he cried out, seeing the man in black tap the tube with the greenish liquid with his index finger. “What in the world is going on? What do you want? What is that?" Alex was rapid firing questions after questions. At the back of his mind, whatever was about to go down would more than likely end with him dying. He didn't want to die. He was way too young to die!

“Don't you ever run out of questions?" the man asked, clearly annoyed at his incessant questioning.

“Well if you start answering them I might actually stop!"

The man was about to say something when sounds of a ruckus came from outside the warehouse. “What was that?" Alex asked. As if to answer his question, the sound of gunshots began to ring out. People were shooting something out there. The sound of a radio turning on took Alex's attention and he looked as the man in black placed his watch up to his mouth and spoke to it.

“What's going on out there?"

“We've got some intruders, boss. I think his friends are here."

“Friends?" Alex was so confused at this point, there was literally no point in asking anymore questions as no one was clearly interested in answering them for him.

“Welp, I hate to cut things short, Alex," the man in black approached him, “but I've got business to deal with."

“What are you--NONONONONO! HOLY SHI--AHHHHHH!!!"

Excruciating pain reverberated throughout Alex's body as the man in black basically stabbed his neck with the pointed end of the silver gadget he was holding. It was like a syringe except the needle was ten times thicker in diameter. It felt like it stabbed straight through his spine. No amount of words could describe the sheer pain that wracked Alex. It felt like he was being burned alive and being electrified all at the same time. Through the stars and white spots in his vision, he could see the greenish liquid being injected into him. The other was slowly filling up with a reddish liquid. Blood. It was his blood!

Alex cried out in pain, tears streaking down his eyes as the pain was unimaginable. He tried to move, to free himself but found his body wasn't moving at all. He was practically paralyzed on that wooden chair he was seated on. That was when a new feeling began to well up inside of him. Amidst the pain that coursed throughout his body, a newfound warmth began to radiate from his heart. It was slow at first, but it soon began to spread through his arms and legs, and he began to sweat profusely. It felt like he was on fire. Literally. The burning sensation earlier had nothing to this new one and Alex badly wanted to jump into a tub of frigid water to cool himself.

“Come on!" The man in black shouted amidst Alex's cry for help. “Show yourself, animal!" In a few moments the fluid extractor was filled to the brim with Alex's blood and began to analyze it. The man in black pulled it out of Alex's neck unceremoniously before pushing him onto the floor, leaving Alex lying on his side. The man in black stared at his watch, which showed him the progress of the analysis.

Alex on the other hand felt like he was going to pass out. Saliva was drooling at the side of his mouth and he couldn't move any part of his body at all. It was a miracle he was still conscious up to this point. It was a miracle that he was still breathing. Just then, when all hope seemed lost for the young man, a door opened at the far corner of darkened warehouse and people began to pile in. The man in black next to him cursed, before taking cover behind one of the boxes. He pulled out a handgun from his coat and began to fire at the people rushing towards him.

Gunshots began to rang out inside the warehouse, adding only to the headache that came back with a vengeance and made Alex's life a living hell. Here he was, lying on the floor, in some unknown warehouse, with a mysterious fluid that was injected into him by a man in black. He was struggling to stay conscious but even he himself was at his limits. Was he going to die? He wasn't sure. The question hung in the air before he began to slip out of consciousness. The last thing he saw was someone running up to him, firing a rifle at the man in black that rushed out of his cover, away from his view.

Death was something Alex never really thought about. He was young man in college with big dreams and big ambitions. He made plans for his life. Study college for his degree, then graduate and get a nice job. Own a nice apartment, and maybe enjoy the bachelor life--that is by playing video games and just hanging out with friends. In his simplistic life, the idea of death never really popped up. His parents were still alive, so the thought of mourning someone or the thought of loss wasn't something he dealt with.

In the darkness of space that was his consciousness that floated in, for the first time in his life, he thought about death. Was this what death felt like? Nothingness and the feeling of emptiness inside of you? Alex wasn't sure.

But his philosophical moment came to an end when he was pulled back from the darkness and straight back into the light. Alex's consciousness came back to him and he found himself lying on a bed. Eyes fluttered open and his blurry vision slowly cleared up, revealing where he was. He was lying on a bed inside what looked like the school's clinic. The familiar white tiles, the white walls, the green cover used to give privacy for their patients, everything was familiar again. Alex blinked. Then he blinked again, and then his mind started to work and the first thing he thought off aloud was.

“What the fuck was that dream about?"

Coming to think of it, dreams were suppose to be weird. Being kidnapped by a man in black, being questioned about something he had no freaking clue what was about, it all made sense now. It was all just a dream. Alex wiped the side of his face of sweat. He glanced down the bed he was lying on and noted the sweat stain he left behind. It was one intense dream! He thought he died too!

“Glad that's over," he told himself, swinging his legs over the bed and standing up on the white tiled floor. “How in the world did I end up here however…" Alex mumbled to himself as he stretched, feeling aches and pains coming from his back. Did he pass out or something? In the dream he did… “I remember going home…" he began to mumble to himself, looking onto the floor and was pleased to find his shoes neatly placed next to the bed. Just then, the clinic doors open and two people came in, talking seriously with one another.

“Well I'm glad you all got out safely though," came a voice. “But that was very risky for you guys to do."

“I know. But I couldn't just leave him there."

“Why did they take him anyway?"

The two footsteps began to draw closer. “I think it's because the Observers…" One of the people stopped talking as he came upon the sight of Alex standing and looking at the two of them. “Alex!" he cried out.

“Raze?" Alex asked. “What the hell are you doing here?"

Raze didn't answer Alex's question but instead hugged him, surprising even Alex himself.

The person Raze was with was none other than the local doctor on campus, Doctor Klaw. “Ah, I see you're awake Alex." The doctor grabbed the clipboard at the side and began to file through the papers. “How are you feeling?"

Raze let go of Alex and stood to the side, smiling at him. “Uh, I'm okay, I guess?" he answered. The doctor then began to write his answers down the clipboard. “What happened, Doc? Did I pass out or something? I just had the weirdest dream or something." Both Raze and the Klaw both stared at him as if he wa crazy or something. Alex immediately noted their expression and raised both his hands defensively, saying, “I swear, I wasn't on drugs! But it felt like I was!" Silence came from the two people, prompting Alex to continue and start rambling about his weird dream. “I was like in a warehouse, with this scary man in black dude and he was interrogating me about stuff I didn't have a freaking clue about and…"

Raze and Klaw both glanced at each other. Klaw then looked at him and said, “That wasn't a dream, Alex."

“He started asking me...what?"

“That wasn't a dream, Alex." Doctor Klaw placed the clipboard down and then grabbed a mirror that was lying on a desk at the side and faced it towards him. “I'm sure that wound in your neck would attest to that."

“Wound in my…" Alex pulled his T-Shirt down and leaned forward. That was when he saw the obvious stark scar of a wound that clearly wasn't there before. Almost immediately, the memories of the man in black stabbing him with that fluid extractor on the neck, along with the excruciating pain that came with it, came rushing back to him like a speeding track. “AHHH!!" he shouted loudly, only to be quieted by Raze who wasn't as panicked as he was.

“Relax, Alex! Relax!"

“How do you expect me to fucking relax?!" he said, touching the scar on his neck. “A man in black just stabbed me with God knows what! I thought that was all a dream! Holy shit!" he shouted, freaking out entirely. “Did you guys even call the cops?! What the fuck is going on?"

Doctor Klaw placed the mirror back down the table and motioned for Alex to calm down. “I'm sure you have a lot of questions you want answered."

“I sure fucking do! That man in black kept sputtering about some nonsense!"

“Well, Raze and I are here to answer them for you to the best of our abilities," Doctor Klaw said, as Raze stood next to him.

“Well, what the hell is going on then? What did that man want to do with me? Why the hell was I kidnapped?" The realization just dawned on Alex. He really WAS kidnapped. “OH MY GOD, I GOT KIDNAPPED! HOLY FUCK!"

“Alex, please, we can't answer any of your questions if you keep freaking out on us like this," Raze said, doing his best to calm the person down. “Take a deep breath and just ask us your questions. We promise you that we're perfectly safe where we are."

Alex did so, taking a deep breath and doing his best to regain his composure. “Deep breaths…" he mumbled to himself, inhaling and exhaling.

“You okay now?" Raze asked.

“Yes. I'm calm now. I'm calm as I'll ever be, given I have no clue what the hell is going on."

“That's why we're here." Doctor Klaw crossed his arms across his chest. “So, your questions?"

Alex nodded. “Let's start with something simple. Where am I?"

“You're in the Pureeys Campus Clinic," Doctor Klaw answered.

“What year is it?"

“2017."

“Okay, good. At least I know I didn't freaking time travel all of a sudden." He chuckled mostly to himself, and Raze grinned at the corny joke.

“What day is it?"

Doctor Klaw and Raze glanced at each other and then Raze said, “It's Friday evening."

“It's Friday eve--wait what?" Alex snapped, looking at the both of them. “It's Friday?!"

Raze nodded and took out his phone to prove his point. He showed him the lockscreen which showed the date and time, with a picture of a horseshoe as the wallpaper. “It's Friday today, Alex."

“You were out cold for three days," Doctor Klaw added.

Alex was silent for a moment, digesting the fact that he was knocked out cold for three days. Whatever the hell was going on, it was clearly some serious stuff. He then felt the scar on his neck twinge, making him ask, “Was it because of that fluid thing that was injected into me?"

Klaw fixed the glasses on his face and answered a confident, “Maybe. We're not sure yet. We're still running tests on your blood to make sure there was nothing there that shouldn't be there."

“That doesn't really fill me with confidence," Alex remarked, subconsciously feeling the scar on his neck.

“It is what it is, Alex. We're working on figuring stuff out as soon as we can."

“'We'?" Alex asked. “Who's we? What exactly happened? Why on earth was I even kidnapped?" Alex looked at two people in front of him. “I heard gunshots and stuff. It was freaking crazy."

Raze scratched the back of his neck, smiling sheepishly at him. “Yeah, well...I think the answer you're about to hear is probably going to sound even crazier."

“Yeah? Try me," Alex said, utterly tired at this point. “I just woke up from a coma, induced by a man in black, sputtering some conspiracy shit that I have no idea. Who, I might add, just stabbed some mystery liquid inside of me while at the same time took out some of my blood. If you're going to tell me that aliens exist, and that I'm also a wizard, I might actually believe you."

“I'm sorry to tell you that you're not a wizard, Alex," Doctor Klaw said with a smile. “Though, while we can tell you what's going on, it's best if you heard it from the head man himself."

Great, more mysteries. Alex was getting frustrated at this point. “And who might this be?"

“President Howerton," Raze answered.

“The president?" How deep does the rabbit hole go? “Okay?"

“Yeah, he's been waiting for you to wake up for a while now. He can answer all the questions you have."

“Why not answer them yourself, Raze?"

“I can, but I think it's better this way," Raze answered, looking oddly sympathetic. “Besides, he can easily make you see the bigger picture of things." Alex looked at him skeptically, to which Raze sighed. “Look, I know it's tough right now, but I need you to trust me."

Alex just sighed and shook his head. “Fine, I'll play along. I'm already in this deep anyway. The worst that's going to happen is you're going to tell me that I'm dreaming and then poof! I'll wake up and realize I was just tripping on acid or something."

“Unfortunately, you're not tripping on acid, Alex," Doctor Klaw remarked, grabbing the clipboard that was on the table. “I would know."

“Yeah, yeah."

Raze and Alex began to head out, with Raze leading the way. Alex glanced at his roommate who was walking slightly ahead of him, leading him towards President Howerton's office. The place was quiet and aside from the two of them, they were practically alone in the hallway. It gave Alex enough time to just reflect on what just happened to him. Being kidnapped by a man in black? Waking up from a coma? And now was going to talk to the President? The series of events that just transpired felt so surreal and yet, he wasn't asleep or anything. He pinched himself just to make sure, and there was pain coming from his arms. He was wide awake in the middle of the night.

“I'm...I'm not dreaming, right?" he blurted out loud.

Raze turned his head, and again, he had this sympathetic expression. “You're not, Alex," he answered. The two turned around the corner and the two was in front of the President's office. “After you talk to President Howerton, I promise you that I'll answer any questions you may have about what's going on." He then looked away and muttered lowly, “It's the least I can do. I got you into this mess anyways."

“Your fault?"

“After you talk to the president."

“Fine, fine, sheesh." Alex opened the door and stepped inside the President's office. The office was something Alex was never really a regular off. He was a decent student, and above all else, a decent human being, so he wasn't someone the President regularly had to talk to for guidance. The place looked like any other office, bookshelf here, desk there, a computer placed to the side. The front desk had the plaque of the President , 'Leon Howerton' engraved on it. The black office chair swivelled around in response to his entry and Alex saw the old President smiling at him, a cup of hot coffee in one hand. The man looked tired, judging from the way his brow hung atop his eyes. President Leon looked like had seen way too many things already in his lifetime.

“Ah, Alex, you're finally awake," he chimed. “Please, have a seat," he added, motioning to the two empty chairs in front of the desk.

“Good evening, sir," Alex responded, respectful as always. “I was told that you were going to explain to me what's been going on as of late."

“Yes, of course," Leon replied, sitting up right. “But before that, can I offer you some tea or something? You must be hungry."

“I'm fine, thanks," Alex said, making himself comfortable on the chair. “Personally, I'd just prefer to not be in the dark, sir. To be honest, I have no freaking clue what is going on."

The president clasped his hands on the desk and looked at him seriously. “I understand your confusion, Alex, which is why I'd like to preface everything by apologizing. I am sorry, Alex."

“You're sorry? For what?" Alex's brow rose. “Are you part of the reason of why I was kidnapped?" He then reeled back and instinctively grabbed the scar that was on his neck. “Of why I have this freaky scar on my neck now?!"

“Please, Alex, calm down," Leon said, keeping his calm tone of voice. “To be perfectly honest, no. I am not the reason as to why you were kidnapped, but I do know why you were, or at least, I think we do."

“Go on then."

Leon sighed then stood up. Taking a sip from his coffee, he walked over to the window, glancing at the dark street outside. With the way the moon spilled into the room from the window, it illuminated his entire figure, giving him a mysterious air around him. “Tell me, Alex, do you believe in fiction?"

“Do I believe in...fiction?"

“Yes. Fairy tales, fables…urban legends even." Leon turned around to face him, still holding his cup of coffee. There was a certain twinkle in the old man's eyes. “That sort of thing." He took a sip from his drink then continued, “Do you believe in the boogeyman?"

Alex thought for a moment before answering, “No? Not really. I'm not a kid, sir. Maybe back when I was a young man, I would have probably believed that Santa Claus was real but yeah, no. I don't think I do. I sure as hell don't believe in the boogeyman, or at least I have no reason to." He looked at the President incredulously. “Where are you going with this?"

“Simply put, Alex, what happened to you the other day was a misunderstanding." Leon placed his cup of coffee back down the desk. “Raze, not you, was the one that was supposed to be kidnapped by OWO. They thought you were a furry. Their intel was unfortunately mistaken."

OWO? Furry? Alex thought he was going to get answers, but instead only got more questions. “Raze was the one that was suppose to be kidnapped? What the hell? What's exactly going on?" The level of confusion Alex had on his face said it all. “What in the world is an OWO and this whole furry thing?"

The President pressed his fingers close to his forehead, clearly deep in thought about something. After a few moments of silence, he looked at Alex and smiled warmly. “I think...this sort of thing is better for me to show you instead of tell you."

Alex remained silent, clearly still confused and growing more frustrated by the second. It was like he was on a rollercoaster that just wouldn't seem to give him a break. His silence was replaced with awe however, when in a blink of an eye, the President's form--his human form began to change right before his very eyes. “I think after this," the man before him said, his entire face changing right before Alex's eyes. “You'll start believing in fairy tales." The President's tone of voice began to change as well. Gone was the old man's voice but was replaced with a far deeper, richer tone of voice. Leon's face began to morph right before Alex's eyes. Leon's nose seemingly melted into his face, curving slightly to form the nose of a feline. Whiskers began to protrude from his face, and the President's trademark blond beard began to grow thicker, slowly covering the man's face. It circled around him, forming what Alex recognized as a mane.

That was when it clicked in Alex's head.

The President was transforming into a lion. “What the hell…" Alex muttered to himself, watching with awe, fear, curiosity, shock and surprise all at the same time. He could have won an Oscar at that current moment because he would have put any other actor to shame at the sheer range of emotions he was displaying. The President's entire frame seemingly inflated itself right before his very eyes. Leon's arms ballooned to reflect his new, animalistic figure, showing signs of muscle underneath the formal suit he was wearing. There was an audible sound of fabric stretching as he completed his transformation. Alex sat there, utterly transfixed at the entirety of what he was watching.

At the end of it all, President Leon Howerton stood in front of Alex, not as a human, but as a transformed lion.

Alex's mind reeled from the sensory input. He blinked. Then blinked again, before shaking his head and rubbing his eyes. “I'm freaking tripping balls right now. This is some next level shit!"

The lion before him chuckled, giving Alex a clear view of his pearly white, and very sharp teeth. “I'm glad you're taking this very well then. Though,I regret to inform you that you are not on drugs, Alex. I have a very stern policy against the usage of such things in my university."

“Oh, don't worry, I'm going to start screaming in a few seconds," Alex said, standing up from his chair. “This has to be some joke, right?" He turned his head, looking around frantically. “It's really funny guys. The whole kidnapping thing, me being in a coma, and now you turning into some talking lion like you just walked straight out of a Disney movie." Alex punctuated his disbelief by laughing at his own corny joke. “Come on you guys. This joke has gone on for far too long. Show's over people!" he shouted, standing up and walking over to the nearest desk and began rummaging through it.

“I can assure you, Alex, that this is no joke. And I'll have you believe that I'm a far better person than that awful Mayor Lionheart!" Leon fixed his tie, and fluffed up his mane before going towards his desk and taking another sip of his coffee. “Will you sit down, young man? You won't find any hidden cameras there."

“Oh yeah? Try me!" Alex said, walking over to a shelf and taking out books one after the other. “The next thing I know, Raze is going to bust through that door and say, 'it's just a prank bro!"

Leon sighed to himself. “I'm at least glad you're not freaking out about this. I half expected you to pass out."

“Freaking out?" Alex snapped his head towards him, and Leon saw a mix of fear, frustration and confusion in the young man's face. “I am really freaking out right now! I'm talking to a lion for goodness sake!" He grabbed his head and muttered to himself.

“Alex." Leon called out, sounding a bit more forceful this time. “Take a seat." He then added, “Please."

The only human in the room cautiously sat back down the chair and faced the now President of the school who turned into a lion. President Leon cleared his throat and began, “I'm not lying to you, Alex. This is reality. I am a living, breathing, lion standing in front of you. I'm sorry to get you dragged into all of this, but this is the current circumstances of your life now."

Alex took a deep breath and decided to just take it all in. “Alright...okay…" He said, if only more to himself than the President. “Assuming that I DO believe that this is all real, and frankly speaking I'm still trying to wrap my head around all this, what exactly are you then? Are you even human, Mr. Howerton?" He might as well go down this crazy madhouse of a rabbit hole he fell into.

“I'm a Furry, Alex," Leon replied. “I'm still human, yes. But much more than that."

Alex raised his brow. “I'm going to pretend I know what you're talking about. So, if you are a Furry then, what's this got to do with me? I'm obviously not like you." Alex then leaned back in the chair. “You mentioned this…OWO thing. What's that all about?"

“OWO," Leon said, muttering the words darkly. “It's an organization that is after us. They want to kill people like us."

Kill? Alex gulped. He remembered the man in black, an OWO agent, torturing him. “Furries?" he asked, trying to instead not think about the dark memory that happened a few days earlier.

Leon nodded. He then looked apologetic. “Unfortunately, they mistakenly thought you were a Furry."

“What on earth gave them that idea?" Alex asked curiously.

“We have a few ideas, and we're trying to determine which one it is. Nonetheless, that's why you were kidnapped."

“Why not call the police then?" Alex slammed his hands on the desk. “If these are some bad men, why not let them handle it?"

“If only it were that easy, Alex," Leon replied, taking another sip from his coffee. “Suffice to say, this is a far deeper matter that isn't easily solved through conventional means."

A thought then crossed Alex's mind. “You said OWO's only after Furries. If they found out I was human, they would have let me go, right? Why'd you guys have to get involved then?"

Leon's face turned sympathetic again and he placed the now empty coffee mug on the desk. “We had to. You would have died if we didn't."

A chill ran down Alex's spine. “I-I would have died?"

“They would have killed you, simply speaking. OWO's intel is very sharp. Only rarely do they ever make a mistake. You're not the rule, Alex, only the rarest of edge cases. If we hadn't arrived in time at that warehouse…" Leon shook his head. “Suffice to say, your body would be floating down the river by now."

Alex gulped, and then looked up at the President who was scratching his temple. “T-thank you, I guess?"

“Don't thank me, Alex. I have every right to have had you killed."

The coldness that came from the President's voice was something Alex wasn't expecting.

“Your existence is a danger to not only us, but to everyone around you. OWO never misses their mark. From here on out, you are a loose end they desperately need to tie up. By any means necessary." Leon sighed. “Though, I shouldn't direct my anger to you. After all, you are a victim of circumstance."

“So…" Alex said, still trying to digest all the information he was being given. OWO...Furries...killing people. It's like he found himself suddenly waking up and being told he was the centerpiece of some action thriller movie. “What happens now?" he dared to ask.

“The least you could do is cooperate with us," the lion said, sitting back down on his chair. “The rest of the other Furries can fill you in on what's what."

With a blink of an eye, the President in front of Alex began to transform back into a normal human. His mane began to shrivel up and seemingly get sucked in back to his face. His muzzle began to shorten and the tell tale signs of a human nose and mouth began to appear. His catlike eyes slowly morphed into normal human eyes. In a span of a second or so, the large muscular lion that Alex was just talking to, disappeared and was instead replaced by the older gentleman he came to know as the President of Pureeys University.

Leon clasped his hand on the desk, smiling upon seeing Alex's surprised expression. “I am sorry, Alex. If I had the choice, I would have not had you dragged into this mess. But unfortunately, life didn't seem interested in giving you a normal life." His eyes darted towards the wall clock that was next to the door and he noted that it was already nearing midnight. “It's getting late, and you need to get some rest. Go outside. Raze should be waiting for you."

Alex stood up, questions buzzing in his head, all desperately wanting to get answered. He was about to open his mouth to ask another question, but decided against it. His mind could only process so much information in such a short amount of time. He needed to just take a moment to digest this all in.

“Thank you, sir," he said, instead. “For saving my life."

And with that, Alex excused himself from the room, leaving President Leon by himself.

Raze stood outside, waiting patiently. His back was to the wall and his mind was somewhat deep in thought. The door swung open and out came Alex who had an unfathomable expression on his face. Alex glanced at Raze and a brief silence was shared between them. It was Raze however who broke the silence and then said, “I should probably lead you back to the dorm."

Alex nodded, still remaining quiet and still lost in his thoughts. The two didn't speak as much, and Raze decided to just let Alex be for now, having him digest the new information and clarify it for him when he was comfortable doing so. The two stepped out of the building and begun walking at the empty street of the university. The streetlights illuminated the path and the crunch of the brick path under their feet accompanied the silence between the two of them. Inevitably, it was Alex who broke the ice.

“Raze…" he began, not looking at his companion. “Does this mean you're a Furry too?"

Raze nodded. “I am Alex." He then looked sympathetic. “I'm sorry that you got dragged into this mess."

Alex shook his head. “You don't have to apologize. It's not your fault anyways, right?" He sighed once more. “It feels like my life just turned upside down in a blink of an eye. I mean, I'm still not sure what happens now!"

“Yeah, it kind of has, doesn't it?" Raze then scratched the back of his head. “Well, life goes on, for the most part," he replied kicking a small stone to the side. “It goes without saying that what you've seen here cannot be told to anyone else."

“Unless I want to get captured by OWO and get killed, right?"

Raze chuckled. “I'm glad at least you know how the rules work now. Do you have any other questions however?" Raze asked, looking at him seriously. “I know that things probably don't make sense right now, but I'll do my best to explain them to you."

“Most of the questions I had were already answered by President Leon," he remarked. “But I am wondering though," Alex's expression shifted to that of an annoyed one, “I didn't realize President Leon was such a cold piece."

“What do you mean?"

“He said he could have had me killed! I mean, what am I? Indispensable to him or something? It sounded like he was just as worse as OWO back there."

Raze shook his head. “I admit, that could have been worded better, but I think you misunderstand, Alex." Alex cocked his head to the side, prompting Raze to continue saying, “You have to understand the kind of position this puts us in."

“And that is?"

“The President is just looking out for us. All of us. Loose lips sink ships, so he's worried you might become a problem for us down the line."

Alex thought for a moment. “Well I'm not going to sell you guys out or something. With death being the penalty for it, I'd prefer to not have blood on my hands."

Raze smiled. “I'm glad you're on our side at least."

Alex nodded, understanding what Raze was trying to tell him now. Although sounding cruel, President Howerton was just saying what was right from a man of his position. “What changed his mind then?"

“I asked him to reconsider."

Alex stopped in his tracks, staring at Raze who smiled warmly at him. “Y-you asked him to rescue me?"

“I did," Raze nodded. He scratched the back of his head sheepishly. “W-what?" he asked, seeing Alex staring at him as if he was seeing him in a new light.

“Thank you!" Alex cried out, pulling Raze into a surprise hug. “Thank you for saving my life!"

Raze chuckled, wrapping one arm around him and hugging him back. “You don't have to thank me, Alex. You're my friend after all! I couldn't let them get you killed out there." Alex pulled back, giving Raze his personal space once more. “You can imagine how shocked I was to have heard you got kidnapped right when I got back to the dorm."

That's right! Alex thought to himself. While his memory was hazy, he was hanging out with Raze during that evening. He and Raze were just having some fun time in the mall. They eventually separated however, and that was when Alex ran into the man in black. That was when a thought crossed Alex's mind.

“So...what did you guys do to that OWO agent?"

Raze's expression shifted to that of a grim one. “We, uh...had to…you know…" He then pantomimed the action of cutting his throat.

Alex gulped. “Oh, wow...so it's really like that then?"

Raze nodded. “Yeah...honestly, I would prefer to not kill anyone, but sometimes...situations don't actually allow for the non-lethal approach."

Alex nodded as he continued to walk forward. The conversation between the two of them dipped, and a short spell of silence was cast. It wasn't until they got back to the dormitory when Alex spoke once more. “I never got to ask," he began, “what are you anyway?"

Raze blinked, taken a bit off guard by the question. He was unlocking the door to their room and briefly stopped to answer, “What am I?"

“Yeah, what do you turn into?"

Raze unlocked the door to their room and it swung open. “I'm a horse, Alex."

Alex thought for a moment, then snapped his fingers. “I'm not surprised. You're a track star after all."

Raze chuckled, and went over to his side of the room. Alex sighed and unceremoniously dropped himself onto his bed. His mind was abuzz with questions and while he did have some answers, it only served to confuse him more. It was like he was dropped into a world and was still picking up the pieces to help him get by and understand how everything worked. OWO? Furries? Killing people? He shook his head. While he was still wrestling with the idea that this was all a fantasy, the creeping, gnawing sensation that it wasn't forming in his stomach.

Reality was truly stranger than fiction.

The young man closed his eyes a few moments after that, happy to finally get some decent sleep.

The last thing on his mind was the idea that after all this time, his roommate was a furry.
