A war veteran known as Captain Phoebus could be seen returning to Paris with his loyal equine friend Achilles, an anthropomorphic stallion. "I leave town for a couple of decades and they change everything," thought Phoebus. While venturing through the new maze, he came across two guards to get some directions. "Excuse me, gentlemen, I'm looking for the Palace of Justice. Would you-" (The guards ignore Phoebus' request.) I guess not," muttered Phoebus. After continuing to walk, he spotted an anthropomorphic vixen with emerald green eyes and raven hair dancing with her best friend, an anthropomorphic goat named Djali. Phoebus, entranced by the vulpine's vibes, grinned to her. "That's a nice gig you've got there," he said. Esmeralda giggled at the compliment and gave a kiss on the cheek. "Thank you. I'm Esmeralda," she said. "Esmeralda Zorra, 20 year-old vixen." Phoebus held her wrists in his hands and said, "I'm Captain Phoebus. It was great to see you." Esmeralda wanted to kiss him on the lips, although one of her few human friends whistled to the trio.
"Guards," his voice boomed. Djali grabbed the hat of donated coins and yelled, "Come on, Esmeralda!" Esmeralda ran along with her friend, only to be surrounded by the guards mentioned earlier. "All right, Gypsy... Where did you get the money," one of the guards asked them. Esmeralda glared at the two guards and tells them, "For your information, we earned it." Both of the guards shared a laugh from the vixen's honest response. "Gypsies don't earn money," scoffed the skinnier guard. "They steal it," added the obese guard, who wrapped his arms around Esmeralda. "You'd know a lot about stealing," muttered Esmeralda. Phoebus watched with confusion at the conflict. "What's this about if she earned the money," he thought. Djali liberated his friend by punching the overweight guard in the stomach and landing a kick on the skinnier guard. "Get off her back," he said. The gypsies fled the scene, but the guards got up and tried chasing them again. Phoebus pulled Achilles in front of them, knocking them into Achilles' muscular back.
"Watch it," said Achilles, who accidentally tumbled onto all fours. Noticing the position of one guard, Phoebus ordered, "Achilles, sit." Achilles sat onto the guard's spine and asked, "Does my butt look fat with that numb skull there?" Phoebus calmly chuckled and teased the guard, with a crowd of people laughing at the guard with the stallion's big butt pinning him. "Oh, dear, I'm sorry. Naughty horse! Naughty! He's just impossible. Really, I can't take him anywhere," he teased. Achilles blushed a little from the tease. "It's worth the embarrassment," he thought. Esmeralda smiled at the sight, thankful for Phoebus assisting with her escape. "Thank you, Phoebus," she thought. "I owe you one for that." "Get this thing off me," yelled the guard. The obese guard got his weapon and threatened, "I'll teach you a lesson, peasant!" Phoebus revealed his gold armor and got his sword, ready to duel him. "You were saying," he asked. The guard retracted his weapon and replied, "Oh, Captain! At your service, sir!" Phoebus smiled and asked to them while depositing dropped coins in a familiar hat, "I know you have a lot on your mind, but the Palace of Justice?"
Later that Day...
Frollo and one of his guards are seen in a dungeon whipping their newest prisoner. "Guard," said Frollo. "Yes," asked the guard. "Ease up. Wait between lashes. Otherwise the old sting will dull him to the new," added Frollo. The guard maliciously grinned and responded, "Yes, sir." (The whipping guard returns to his job.) Frollo turns to Phoebus as he smiles a bit. "Ah, so this is the gallant Captain Phoebus, home from the wars," said Frollo. Phoebus kept his solemn look as Frollo walked around him, "Reporting for duty, as ordered, sir," he said. "Your service record precedes you, Phoebus. I expect nothing but the best from a war hero of your caliber," added Frollo, who then stopped to Phoebus' right hand side. Phoebus still made no smile and replied to him, "And you shall have it, sir. I guarantee it." "Yes," Frollo said in a charismatic voice. (His head turns to where the whipping went on.) "You know, my last Captain of the Guard was, um, a bit of a disappointment to me." (At the crack of a whip, a loud scream of pain roars through the dungeon.)
"Well, no matter," said Frollo. "I'm sure you'll, whip my men into shape." Phoebus nervously looked back at Frollo, still processing the pain he heard. "I didn't know Frollo's sense of humor was that dark," he thought. "Uh, thank you," Phoebus nervously said. (The two walk from the dungeon to a scenery of Paris' streets.) "You've come to Paris in her darkest hour, Captain. It will take a firm hand to save the weak-minded... From being so easily misled," Frollo said while gesturing Phoebus to look at the streets from above. Phoebus looked confused and asked to him, "Misled, sir?" Frollo calmly nodded and added, "Look, Captain. Gypsies. The Gypsies live outside the normal order. Their heathen ways inflame the people's lowest instincts. And they must be stopped." Phoebus, now even more confused, asked him, "I was summoned from the wars to capture fortune-tellers and palm readers?" Frollo groaned and responded, "The real war, Captain, is what you see before you. For 20 years, I have been taking care of the Gypsies, (Frollo flicks pebbles off of the smooth surface.) One... By... One!"
"And yet, for all my success, they have thrived. I believe they have a safe haven within the walls of this very city- a nest, if you will. They call it the Court of Miracles," added Frollo, who turned the tile revealing a horde of ants. Phoebus tilted his head in confusion at the countless ants. "What are we going to do about it, sir," he asked. Frollo's facial expression turned sadistic as he squashed the ant horde with the tile. "You make your point quite vividly, sir," responded Phoebus. Frollo's sadistic smile changed to a casual grin as he wrapped his hand around Phoebus' shoulder. "You know, I like you, Captain," he said. (Frollo offers Phoebus to come to the Feast of Fools with him.) "Shall we?" In just seconds after hearing a large crowd cheer, Frollo groans and mutters, "Duty calls..." "Have you ever attended a peasant festival, Captain," he asked Phoebus, who answered with, "Not recently, sir." Frollo's neutral facial expression gave off an unfazed vibe. "Then this should be quite an education for you. Come along," he said.
