Psionic Investigations Unit

Chapter 2

for DuskCypher

by Draconicon

Special Agent M was having a more interesting time than Agent D, at the very least. She had felt the twisting in reality the further down the hall to Cell Block E, but unlike her partner, her abilities didn't tend towards Nullifying that sort of thing. Not that she imagined that it would be very easy to Nullify this in the first place; Minotaur had obviously gotten a good deal stronger since the last time that they had crossed paths.

Wonder if she'll smell like steak when we're done, the lioness thought with a small, rueful chuckle.

As soon as she reached the checkpoint blocking off the corridor and Cell Block E from the rest of the facility, she felt like she stood on the threshold of something big. She looked at the steel door, cocking her head to the side as she tried to unravel whatever it was that had happened to reality here, but whatever Minotaur had done, it was beyond her ability to just logically untangle. M shook her head, resting her fingers on the steel door and reaching out.

Psions worked on a different level of reality than most people even knew existed. It wasn't like just pushing one's hand against the molecules and atoms around oneself and making them obey, though she supposed she could understand why most people thought that was the case. No, this was something...different. The closest that she could come to explaining it was a sixth sense, a sort of awareness of the different things moving around them, and the ability to connect to that. Pyrokinetics connected their warmth with the warmth in the air around them and built on that. Those that had telekinesis used the stirring of the world around them to turn potential energy into kinetic energy. And those like her, with electro-kinesis -

Click.

They touched the ambient bits of electrical discharge in the air that came into being just by the presence of people, and completed the circuit. Going with the presence of wires and other things that channeled already-existing electricity only made the job easier.

With the electronic lock disabled, she pushed the door open -

"Ah, shit..."

And realized what she'd just stepped into. The hallways extended forward in an impossibly long corridor, something that looked like something out of a fantasy book. Looking behind her, she could see that the doorway that she'd stepped through - just by one step, to be clear - had stretched behind her, almost half a mile away already. There was no turning around and going back down the corridor.

...Yeah, she's definitely stronger.

Minotaur was a Psion that worked on an entirely different wavelength to most of the Psions that they dealt with. Instead of just manipulating the different energy particles around her, the bovine created different spaces, things that played with the concept of space rather than the concept of energy. She could stretch it out, change it, shift what occupied what. It made her seriously dangerous the moment that she had any sort of open area that could be tweaked; if you gave her corners, tunnels, it made her all but impossible to track down.

In effect, her name had come from the labyrinths that she created, and what she did to those that were trapped in them. Nobody was quite sure whether she was acting in self-defense or if she was trying to create killing grounds right off the bat, but whatever the reasons were, she had become a murderer that terrified her victims before taking them to their graves.

Guess it's a good thing that I'm here, she thought, adjusting her jacket and pulling her sleeves up to her elbows. Nobody else is fast enough...

Guns were pointless in an arena that could be warped and twisted at the whims of its ruler. Anything that was mundane speed was pointless, because the walls came up faster than the bullets could fly. But lightning...well, that was a different story.

"Oh, Minotaur...the butcher's here for her steaks..."

The walls trembled slightly, and Special Agent M grinned to herself. That was the sort of thing that she wanted to see. Minotaur remembered her. Good.

She set off down the corridor. If she was lucky, she would be led right to the other woman. If not...well, she had her ways of finding the bovine menace.

Five minutes of searching later, M realized that she was still in the same corridor, following the same path right down the endless line. She looked back over her shoulder, somehow not surprised that the door to this endless realm had remained more than half a mile behind her, but hadn't actually pulled any further back than it had started as. That meant that Minotaur was focusing on keeping her from getting anywhere but this one thin line.

Well, we can't have that.

There wasn't much electricity in the air around her, as she was only one person and that didn't create that much of a charge. However, no matter how much the endless corridor imitated the world of fantasy, it was still made of modern materials, and there were still energy currents flowing around her. She gestured at the floor, where one such main current ran, and then flicked her hand to the side.

BOOM!

The lightning bolt that leaped from one wire to another, through concrete and drywall, let off an explosive burst of thunder in the process. In a stroke of luck, it also broke a hole through to a certain bovine woman.

"Hello, Minotaur. It's been a while," M said, looking through the hole.

Minotaur looked back at her, wordless and glaring. The other woman stood more than half a head taller than her, with thick shoulders and a body that looked like it could pick her up and twist her in half without even trying. The other woman had long-since lost her prison outfit, probably shed when she got out of her cell, and didn't seem in the least bothered by her own nudity.

Then again, the legendary minotaur hadn't exactly hidden his body, so why should this one? M shook her head, crossing her arms.

"So, are we doing this the easy way, or the hard way?"

There was another twist in reality, and Minotaur shifted. Not the locations of the walls, but her own place among them. One moment, she was in the other room. The next, she was on her knees and punching forward, her fist driving right into M's guts.

The lioness went flying backwards, slamming into a wall that opened up behind her. She managed to turn her backwards momentum into a flip, landing on her hands, and then back on her feet. By the time that she was upright, the other woman was gone -

No, not gone. Behind her.

She ducked at the last second to avoid a punch to the back of the head, whipping around with a sweeping kick. Minotaur stumbled backwards, starting to go down, before flickering. She went from falling to already on the floor, and then from on the floor to on the floor in the hallway.

Not quite teleporting, then, M thought. She can change places, but not orientation. If she's falling, she's still falling, and can't just right herself.

That was useful information. Very useful.

She flicked her hand up, throwing a bolt of lightning. It was too fast for the other woman to dodge -

But not too fast to avoid being shunted away. The bolt of lightning went down the corridor rather than out the hole, and Minotaur used that moment to get back on her feet and run away. M watched her go, slowly lowering her hand.

Rather than growling in frustration, she slowly felt a grin growing on the sides of her face. There was something pleasing to this situation, she belatedly realized. Something good, something that made her feel almost...powerful. Something that made it feel right again.

Alright, girl...you want to be hunted? Let the hunt begin.

The lioness climbed out of the hole in the wall, sniffing the air and extending her senses outward. The feeling of energy running through the main lines all around her was a nice disguise, something that would have confused a lesser user of electro-kinesis, but she had been practicing this for a long time. She knew the difference between power lines and bio-electricity. The field that every person put off was different, almost like a fingerprint, and she could feel the flickering shifts of energy as Minotaur rearranged the hallways again and again, as well as her position among them.

More, she could feel the still-living police officers and prisoners that had survived the initial rampage through the Cell Block, those that had managed to find cover and managed to get into smaller cells that didn't bear rearranging. They were still breathing, for now.

M waited until Minotaur had settled down, until she had stopped flitting all about. Then, when the bovine had settled about a hundred feet forward and to the right, she moved. She pushed down, and her high heels left the ground.

A flying lioness would have struck fear into just about everyone, but one that was flying with electrical discharge arcing from her heels to the ground? That was something else. She flew down the hallway at speed, carrying herself at high velocity. One outswept hand gathered up the charge from the main lines around her, and then -

BOOM!

Another powerful thunderbolt, this time aimed right at the bovine's location. She missed by a hair, hitting the edge of the bio-electrical aura rather than the woman herself, and cursed under her breath. It was on the move again, and this time -

M barely stopped herself in time to avoid slamming into a wall, one that hadn't been there before. Knowing what was about to happen, she shoved her hands forward, throwing herself back. Another wall lurched up just behind where she had been standing, now in front of her, and she kept going backwards, further, further, faster, as more walls kept popping up in front of her, trying to pen her in.

She managed to take a quick turn at an intersection that hadn't been there before, realizing that more tunnels and passages were opening up now that the other woman was using more of her walls to try and trap her. Another limitation to the power then; she could only use the limitations of the space that she had occupied; she could not create materials, just shift them around. There was endless space that could be manufactured, and within that space, she had endless freedom of movement, but the walls and their construction formed the boundaries of that space, and how much of it she could create at one time.

Interesting.

M kept forcing that creation, falling back until she found another main line before draining it through her body and blasting it forward. Holes the size of a person were blasted through the various drywall and concrete barriers, leaving her a space to fly through. Which she did.

As the walls fell, she saw them take their places against the sides of the corridor again. There were more and more holes left behind, which meant that the central corridor of this 'labyrinth' was no longer secure. She threw herself down a side tunnel, and not entirely surprisingly, found herself face to face with Minotaur again. The bovine looked up in utter shock. Then more shock after the lioness pumped a charged fist right into the other woman's stomach. Minotaur hunched forward, the breath punched right out of her lungs as she wheezed.

"Want to try again?" M asked.

"Nnnngh..."

The air started to twist, but the lioness was done with chasing the other woman down. She brought one hand up and over, punching the bovine Psion in the back of the head. She went down, and a charged heel-spike to the base of the spine paralyzed her from the waist down. A second stomp to the middle of the back all but short-circuited her nervous system, which should be enough to keep her from making any more trouble for the moment.

She shook her head, sitting down on the pinned woman, looking out through the halls in the wall. With the lack of power, the labyrinth was rapidly fading, and the cell blocks were reconstructing themselves. Their room went from a simple stone chamber to an actual prison cell, where the garage-door style entrance was left open. All around them were bodies, dead and barely alive, and they were gasping for breath in the latter case. M shook her head, pulling her jacket closed once more before reaching for her belt and pulling out her phone.

It started ringing almost immediately, and she flicked it open.

"Special Agent M reporting."

"This is the Commissioner. Where the hell are you?"

"Cell Block E. Just dealt with Minotaur," she said, stroking her fingers through her hair and putting it back in place. "Why?"

"Where's D?"

"Cell Block D. Didn't he tell you?"

"Ugh. You guys are supposed to follow protocol."

"Let me remind you that you're the one that told us to break it."

"You have no proof of that. Now, get the fuck over there."

"Say please."

"...What?"

"I said, say please," she said, crossing one leg over the other. "It's not like D can't handle himself. Besides, there's plenty of reasons to give him the chance to work solo for a bit. He is the Detective, after all."

"Look, it's the rules. You two stay together."

"He's not answering his phone, is he?"

"..."

"Heh, knew it." She chuckled, getting to her feet. "Alright, alright. I'm on my way."

She cuffed Minotaur, made sure that the cell didn't have any further weaknesses in it, then set the door to close as soon as she walked out. Considering how tough the bovine woman was, she didn't put a lot of faith in the cell to hold her for long without some serious upgrades, but for the moment, her electrical discharge should keep Minotaur from causing any serious trouble. And besides, much as she was putting on a confident face, she was on D's side here. She didn't know how this breakout had happened, but it had definitely happened with help on the inside.

Cell Block D was in worse shape than E, that was for sure. While hers had only been fucked over by an illusion, this one had been well and truly fucked over. Slime coated everything, and those prisoners that were still alive were wildly violated, oozing from gaping holes and dripping from both ends. None of them were doing well, and some had tentacles poking out of their cocks like plants looking for some new place to put down roots.

The lioness carefully stepped over all of them, following D's unique bio-signature through the halls. At least this place still followed some of the laws of physics.

Eventually, she rounded a corner to find him in the middle of a harsh fuck-fest with a stallion under him. No more tentacles on that horse, but plenty of cum under him. He looked like he was about to pass out, too. The stallion, not D. He wasn't going to go down to a simple fuck-fest.

She watched, leaning against the wall with her arms folded under her breasts, for nearly five minutes before the stallion finally passed out. With one last whinny and moan, the horse fell to the floor, his eyes rolled back in their sockets and no more motion to be seen. His cock throbbed, obviously trying to shoot a load, but he had gone dry. His balls were almost non-existent after what her partner had put him through.

Though, he had done a bit of a number on Dusk, too. The cat's cock was rather wet with more than pre-cum as he pulled out, and the horse oozed something of a load. She chuckled.

"Good enough to milk a load from you, hmm?"

"Don't start," D muttered.

"Just surprised. Usually, you have better control."

"Usually, I'm not dealing with someone trading off with another personality. I was having to deal with two at once with him."

"Fair."

"How's yours?"

"Out cold," M said, smiling down at her fingers. "Easy as pie."

"Mmm-hmm..."

"...You still don't like this, do you?"

"Not a bit."

"Yeah...me neither."

She glanced down at Polypus. To have maintained control over all those tentacles meant that he had a fair bit of strength over the Psionic side of things, altering the world around him to make reality cry, but that was still not enough to get out of his cell in the first place. Minotaur could have escaped her cell due to a mistake on the part of the staff, but that wouldn't have made it easier in another cell block. Hell, that might have made it harder.

Someone else was involved, and they weren't on the scene at the moment...or were they? Would they necessarily have left? And what did they actually want?

"Any survivors around here?" D asked.

"Hmm?"

"The big ones are down; anyone still living after their rampages?"

M extended her senses through the cell block. There were survivors here and there, but the prison population, as far as she could tell, had been cut by about a quarter from what these two assholes had done. She sighed.

"About fifty left here."

"And in yours?"

"Do you think I really had time to check before coming back here?" she asked with a raised eyebrow. "Yes. Fifty-three. Any other parts of the job you want me to do for you?"

"Calm down. Just asking."

M nodded, sighing as she looked down at the stallion. That had been slightly harsher than she'd meant to get, but now that she wasn't dealing with the physical threats, she had to deal with the things that she couldn't zap or see. She didn't know what had started this whole thing, and this was the part of the job that D did better than almost anyone else at the Agency. Their unit could handle most of the threats that the Psions posed in a fight, but there was a reason that they called D the 'Detective,' and it wasn't just for alliteration.

"Let's get all the inmates back in their cells first," D said. "We can think while we do that."

"And this time, stay together?" she asked with a slight chuckle.

"Can't piss the Commissioner off too much."

"I think that ship has sailed."

"Well, might as well not set it on fire. Come on."

They both pulled weapons. They were allowed to use them, particularly in ways that cops were not, but that didn't mean that they were going to. The prisoners didn't know that, though, and for right now, they needed all the leverage that they could get when they were outnumbered twenty-five to one.

Over the course of a half-hour, they went up and down the various corridors, waking those prisoners that had been fucked but not killed, or those that had played dead in front of Polypus. There were those that had been caught in traps rather than actually rutted, and those that had stayed in their cells rather than run around and risk getting fucked for the possible chance to escape. So, there were actually quite a few that were still conscious and more than willing to be guided back to their cells. D was glad of that, and he could tell that M, despite her cavalier behavior, was relieved that the death toll wasn't as high as the pair of them had feared.

But there was still something off. He noticed it in some of the inmates, a little twitchiness, a lethargy that went further than the adrenaline wearing off. He didn't know what it was, not yet, but he knew that something was off. He kept at arm's length, just in case, and made sure that the prisoners did the same.

They were taking two prisoners - a pit bull and a rabbit - to a prison cell when he felt the wrinkles in reality suddenly tighten. The rabbit screamed, throwing his head back as he went from a high-pitched wail to a deep roar of bloody murder. His eyes all but rolled back until there was nothing but the whites of his eyes showing, and his claws dug deep enough into the sides of his head that they left bloody marks in his temples. M moved forward, her hand arcing with electricity, and D grabbed her shoulder to stop her.

"Wait, wait..."

"What?"

"Can't you feel it?"

The air was pulled tight, reality wrinkled and stretched at the same time around the rabbit, particularly around the head. The rabbit screamed again, his eyes rolled so far back that it almost felt like they were going to see the optic nerve in a second. The pit bull pulled back, his eyes wide and pupils narrowed, trying to put some distance between him and the rabbit.

But it was too late. The lapine prisoner whipped his head towards the canine, lunging for him. With insane strength, he grabbed the bigger, stronger pirsoner and slammed him against the ground. He kept shouting at the top of his lungs, ramming the pit bull's head against the ground until -

"AAAAAAAAAAAGH!"

The same high-pitched scream turned into the same low roar that the rabbit had done, and the prisoners stopped fighting. They turned their heads slowly towards D and M -

Bang.

Bang.

The two revolver blasts were as quick as they were precise, putting two large holes through the prisoners' foreheads and leaving them dead and bleeding out on the ground. M shook her head, while D gritted his teeth.

"A Psionic Virus..."

"Are you sure?" M asked. "That's impossible."

"Impossible for everyone but one."

"...That would fit, wouldn't it? Is he -"

"He has to be." D reached for his phone, shaking his head. "Goddammit. He's supposed to be kept away from anyone and everyone. How the hell did he wind up here?"

"I'm going to blame budget cuts," M said.

"...The fact that you're probably right pisses me off."

"Call the Commissioner. He'll be able to tell us for sure."

D was all but sure already, but he needed confirmation. And if he was right, then they needed to lock this place down, and fast.

Ring ring.

Ring ring.

Ring ring.

Ring -

"Hello? You finally called."

"Look. Polypus and Minotaur are handled, but we have a bigger problem."

"Yes, we do. Your disciplinary hearing for breaking protocol."

He slapped a hand over his face, already feeling the urge to slap the Commissioner down again. They'd checked, he knew the call was recorded, and the higher-up was already trying to put the blame for protocol breaking on his shoulders? This was not the time.

"Later. Right now -"

"No, no, you're not getting out of this one, D. We're not going to just let this slide because of your previous records."

"That's not -"

"You may be a superstar among the agents, but that does NOT mean that you get to break the rules."

"Will you just -"

"I need to know that you will follow orders, and if you won't -"

"Is the Baron in this goddamn facility or not?!"

"...Why do you ask?"

"Goddammit, he is, isn't he?"

"..."

He looked at M. She'd heard everything with the speaker function being on, and she was cursing up a storm, throwing her arms in the air and stomping around the hallway. He couldn't blame her. The Baron was the only Psion that they had ever taken alive that was classified as a Class 7 Psion, someone that no Nullifier was completely certified in handling. Even those that could stand up to the Class 6s were still barely able to keep up with a Class 7. They couldn't nullify everything that they did, just survive the worst of the effects long enough to get close enough to end the whole thing. Anyone that was certified lower than that were just as vulnerable as the mundane population.

Fuck. Fuck. Fuck.

"If he's here, then he's gotten loose," D said. "I need back-up. I need every bit of back-up that you can get. Everyone that you can send here, get them here, now."

"That will be a budget crisis of inordinate proportions."

"And if we don't, we're looking at a zombie outbreak. He's gotten the Virus working."

There was silence on the other end of the line, as well there should have been. An outbreak of this sort had been one of those Armageddon-level scenarios that nobody wanted to think about. Psions could regularly mess with the bodies of others, and some of them were even better at messing with the mind, but they always needed to be present, on-scene to actually do something. There might be lasting effects, but again, that was the Psion interacting with the person and then doing something severe enough that it lasted after the Psion went away.

The Baron had been working on what was later called a 'Psionic Virus', effectively a Psionic alteration to a few cells in one body that could then be passed on to another once getting in close contact with them. Considering that there had been no sign of that at first, it probably meant that there had been a time delay installed in it, too, which meant that it could stay dormant, introduced into a population, and then triggered.

Which means that if there's anyone that got out of this penitentiary, then the whole city is fucked...

"How long do you give us?" the Commissioner asked.

"What do you think, M? Twelve hours?" D asked.

"No more than that, if the Baron's involved."

"Twelve hours."

"I'll scramble everything I can for a perimeter. If we don't hear that you're sorted in that time -"

"Bomb this place to hell."

It was the standard operating procedure for an outbreak of Psionic trouble at Class 5 and above. If someone got free, if someone started warping the world to that extent, then there had to be a stronger solution than just locking them up. If they couldn't be taken down, then they had to be wiped out. Bombing the hospital and killing off all the victims of other Psions was taking it to an extreme that they had never, ever dared before, but this was the Baron. They couldn't take any risks when it came to this one.

The Baron had been enemy number one of the PIU for nearly two years after his first appearance, and it had involved an international man-hunt, an alliance of six different agencies across the world with experience in the paranormal and supernatural, and an orbital bombardment from a space station that wasn't there anymore (officially). Even that had barely been enough to actually bring the Baron to his knees, not even killing him the way that so much effort and expense would have done. The man had been on the verge of bringing something like vampires back to Romania, and they had stopped him in the nick of time.

Now, he had something else. Zombies, from what they had just seen, and ones that were far more infectious and quick to spread than the pseudo-vampires that the Baron had created before. He shook his head, his fingers twitching as he imagined the virus spreading through the rest of the prison. Even the 'healthy' cell blocks could quickly become a problem.

"Get in touch with M when you know who's running the perimeter," D said. "I'll be in touch when and as I can."

"D -"

Click.

He put his phone back at his waist, shaking his head. M sighed, rubbing her forehead.

"This just got a whole lot more complicated."

"No kidding..."

When he found out who had put the Baron in this place, surrounded by potential 'test subjects' for all his powers, heads would roll. Until then, they would have to deal with the reality of the situation. The first thing that they needed to do was find out where the Baron was hiding.

No, first thing was to secure those that were still 'healthy' and uninfected. The Baron had to have started spreading the Psionic Virus through the population already, perhaps through some of the guards, which was why the first break-outs had happened. That meant that there was a good chance that there were no other healthy people on their side in the prison, just prisoners that would be more than happy to side with anyone that offered them freedom. But still, the prisoners needed to be kept out of the way of infection, or they'd be fighting an army to get to the Baron.

But why would the Baron have left it like that? Why would he have given himself away?

The answer clicked immediately after he asked the question. The Baron wanted to test his Psionic Virus against the very people that would have to fight it, and to do that, he needed to create a big enough situation to draw the PIU in, to put them in harm's way. Maybe he thought that the Agency wouldn't go through with bombing a place that had enough of their agents around it, or maybe he thought that it would be a good dose of revenge to leave the PIU with so many casualties after dealing with this situation.

Either way, the man was crazy, but brilliant enough to set up a situation that would give him what he wanted. Goddammit.

"Alright. Let's -"

"Wait..." M held up her hand. "Do you hear that?"

He did, though he gritted his teeth as the sound got louder. It was like some mad crackle that turned into more of a giggle, then down-shifted into the laughter of a complete madman. He had heard it more than once more, considering that he'd been part of the operation that brought the Baron down before.

If he hadn't been convinced that the Baron was on-site already, that would have been all the evidence that he needed. He covered his ears in annoyance as the sound boomed all the louder, shaking his head.

Asshole...

But a dangerous one. A very dangerous one. And one that had him and M right where he wanted...

The End
