Prologue
"Mommy? Mommy where are you? Why does it hurt? It's so dark mommy...The pain is going away now mommy...mommy? Is that you mommy? I want to see daddy...why won't daddy come back mommy? Mommy..."
I woke up with a gasp, sitting up straight and clutching at my chest, just above my pounding heart. My fur was matted against my body, a mixture of sweat and other fluids keeping my black fur against my skin. I looked to my side, down at my sleeping lover...my mate. Her beak had a slight curve to it, her normally ferocious expression traded for one of contentment. Her slim figure betrayed her true strength, and she gave a soft trilling sound as she slept. Bumps ran all along her body, her nipples pert from the cold. A tiny bit of saliva was trickling from her beak onto the make-shift bed I had fashioned together not even an hour ago.
I slowly slipped from her side, clutching my own as I leaned heavily on a nearby tree, the outline of a ruined city just barely visible against the night. As I stared at the husk of a once vibrant town, I couldn't stop my mind from trailing, exploring the events that unfolded over the past week; I'd been nearly killed more times than I cared to remember, broken two ribs, watched my friends get killed, I fell in love with one of the creatures sworn to wipe us out because 'it's the will of their gods' I even saved a few lives...so why does everything feel so wrong? Why did it happen to me? Why haven't I died yet? I can't stop myself thinking...finding myself reliving those moments, the ones gone, the ones who should be forgotten. I can't help but think as these thoughts travel through my mind "Why me?" Please...someone tell me, why? Why did it have to be me?
