#7 of The Chronicles of Sethros

Zephira awoke to sound of leaves rustling as Alex snuggled deeper into her side, murring softly as she slept. The white tigress opened her eyes to find her arms around the curled up wolfess, who until maybe an hour ago she had believed was a male. The tigress giggled, watching as Alex pawed at her muzzle in her sleep. She had to admit it; the slender wolfess was very sexy and extremely cute when she wasn't hiding under all that gear. Even then she gave a slightly mysterious, danger-esc vibe that had caught her attention. At the back of her mind was a question burning to be answered, 'which of her two companions would she lie with?'.

She loved Sethros dearly, and found herself drawn more and more towards him each day, but she wouldn't deny that Alex had taken a little piece of her heart that night as well. An absent thought of Sethros sharing with Alex crossed her mind, but the tigress's mind was elsewhere.

Zephira simply wriggled a little, pulling Alex a little closer into her warm, fuzzy embrace. She purred softly, listening to the peaceful sounds of the forest, which seemed oddly silent to her. There were no sounds of birds chirping, critters scampering or even a lonely cricket. The forest was dead in her mind, an empty husk of what usually took its place.

Just as the eeriness set in Zephira's ears perked up, the sounds of a snapping twig ringing like a watch tower bell, as did the rustle of leaves that followed, this time clear as day. Her feline eyes helped her cope with the darkness as she could see better than most, but as she scanned the tree line she saw nothing extraordinary. Content that she was safe, the tigress simply laid her head on the side Alex's.

Zephira didn't hear it coming, and with the creature that hit that fast and hard she wouldn't have seen it either. She felt its large paw's wrap around her arms, trying to pin her as she clawed, hissed and scratched. When she finally got a good look at her attacker, she found herself staring up into the glowing orange eyes of a feral Lycan. The massive hunchback wolf glanced over her hungrily. As the beast itself was looking rather thin, it had a grin that told her she would be his first meal in weeks. One he was intent on enjoying. Zephira yelped and cried out, calling for someone to help her as the tigress struggled to keep its muzzle from clamping down on her neck. By the looks of his razor sharp teeth he would be the end of her.

Out of nowhere two throwing knives imbedded themselves in the Lycan's back. What was normally a one shot, one kill, had done nothing to the Lycan other than enrage it. Alex started panicing, making a run for her longbow and quiver as the Lycan began to change his focus, now snarling at her. He eased his grip on Zephira just enough for her to slip from his paws, and the tigress quickly scampered back, already repeating the words to a small combat oriented spell. The only one she knew.

"......infernus!". She called out as bright orange and red flames lit up the night sky, surging towards the Lycan. She held the spell for as long as she could, buying time for Alex as the feral howled and writhed in pain. His fur almost caught fire, the rest of his now charred body still functional despite Zephira's onslaught. She tried to conjure another fire storm but she lacked both the strength and focus, crying out as the Lycan pounced and pinned her. She closed her eyes and prayed it would be quick, praying to the maker for her friends and her own soul.

She cracked her eyes open, expecting to see the wolf's jaws clamping down on her neck, but instead she saw him frozen in place, his face taking on an almost glassed over look.

"What the...?". She muttered under her breath, yelping in surprise as the wolf collapsed on top of her, one of Alex's arrows sprouting from the base of the canines skull. Zephira's heart was racing, pounding as if threating to burst from her chest, when Alex came over and pushed the Lycan off of her, wrenching the arrow from its spine before sighing and closing the Lycan's eyes. She listened quietly as Alex muttered a prayer to mother earth before offering a paw to the tigress.

Alex had just managed to get a clear shot at the last second, her powerful longbow singing as its deadly payload vanished into the night. Her own heart was quickening, her mind racing as she wondered if she had ranged the shot right, accounted for everything that could be thrown up. She knew she had only one chance and prayed that arrow found its mark. She walked back, expecting to find the Lycan devouring her friend. When instead she saw the arrow buried in its skull, the feral stiff as a board and still smoking from Zephira's flame thrower of a spell.

Zephira looked up at Alex in shock, her body shaking as she reached up to grasp hold of the Wolfess's paw. Alex gently hauled her to her feet, both of them panting as they looked at each other. Alex quickly slung her bow back over her shoulder, stretching her arms before sighing.

"It's a shame he had to die.....but it was our lives for his....".

Zephira could sense the sadness in Alex's voice. She respected feral's, but she had a feeling Alex shared a much deeper connection with them. She simply nodded in agreement before she remembered Sethros. 'Dammit, I should have returned an hour ago'. She thought.

"We should get going, I almost forgot about poor Sethros...".

Alex nodded as she went to grab her gear, Zephira moving to grab her own. The tigeress took a quick dip to wash off what little blood had splattered on her soft, silken fur. Zephira purred softly as the cool water washed over her, ridding her of the reddened spots that dotted her whiteness. Then she climbed out of the cool lake, and put her slender, flowing, aqua-green dress back on, feeling it almost form to her curvy figure. Not too revealing though teasing all the same.

Once Alex had gathered her equipment, her clothes once again disguising her gender, they headed back to camp. It was a short, quick walk and as they walked back in, they saw I had left the cooked meat I hadn't cured on two make shift wooden plates. I lay against a large log that I had dragged over, my tail flicking lightly as I slept in a position that would make one think I was dreaming about having my arms around someone.

I had fallen asleep just before the Lycan attack, wondering what had happened to Alex and Zephira. The two exchanged glances before quietly devouring the cold dinner. As they finished their meal Zephira could see Alex was troubled, her thoughts almost as easy to read through her eyes, as if they were drawn on parchment. Once they had finished she thought about asking Alex but bit her tongue. Zephira simply crawled into my arms, nestling her head against my chest, under my head. She mewled softly and drifted off into a quiet, but restless sleep, her dreams fading in and out of her head. Though they dared not linger, they brought back the night which her parents had died, the Lycan attack and more, though her sleep was certainly more peaceful than Alex's.

Alex settled down on the other side of me, tempted to try and cuddle in with Zephira. Instead she slept just a foot away. Her dreams however were haunted by visions of the future. She could see someone being crowned Emperor, a great army of daemons and more. To top it all off she saw slaves being taken, and someone she loved being hurt. Alex tossed and turned, whimpering and whining through the night. In the back of her mind was hope, it stayed there for the night like a caged feral, desperate to burst out of its cage and share its radiance with the world.
