The Squall: Chapter one
#2 of The Squall
You know the deal, all the characters belong to me so please don't use them.
"Dude, you don't seriously plan on going out there do you?" Jack asked a worried expression plastered on his face.
"Please. I've been in worse. It's probably a fluke anyway."
While Shaun had been going over what he was going to need for his trip to sea, Jack, had an uneasy feeling about it. What he saw on the Weather Channel confirmed his worries as the weatherman explained what conditions were in store for the sea.
"That's right folks, if you plan on going out to sea, you better reconsider. A very large squall is heading fight for the Miami coast and should be there within a few hours." Jack turned off the TV in disgust and worry. He ran to his friend to try and get him to reconsider his plans.
"Come on man, you can't possibly go out there when a storms coming." Shaun gave his friend a "you got to be kidding look" as he walked over to the window, throwing the curtains open as bright rays of sun poured into the house.
"Yeah, looks like its going to a bad one." He said with a large note of sarcasm.
"I'm begging you, please don't go. I got this strange feeling that this is the last time I'm going to see you." Shaun turned with a raised brow.
".....what are you talking about?"
"I'm serious man. I just have this nagging feeling at the back of my head. I can picture it now. You struggling with the storm, you go overboard, your boat capsizes and BAM! Bye bye, Shaun." Shaun begins to laugh at the absurdity of his friend's prediction.
"This is no laughing matter. You could die out there!"
"Listen, how many times have I gone out to sea?"
"I lost count."
"And how many times have I come back?"
"Every time."
"There you go."
"But...." Shaun quickly placed his finger in front of his mouth to quiet his friend as his other hand went to his shoulder.
"Listen to me, ok? I'm....going.....to....come...B-A-C-K. I don't understand why you're getting all worked up all of a sudden." Jack walked over to his lazy boy as he placed his head in his hands and began to explain what's been happing to him.
"I've been having these weird dreams lately. In my dreams you leave for a fishing trip, right when a storm has been predicted to hit the coast and you never come back." Shaun's eyes went wide.
"You know? I've been having similar dreams."
"Really?"
"No." With that, Jack got up from his chair as he began to plead with Shaun once again.
"I told you man this is no laughing matter."
"And I told YOU that everything will be alright. I appreciate you concern, I really do, but you have GOT to stop worrying like this otherwise your going to die of a heart attack before you even hit thirty."
"But the weatherman said..."
"The weatherman is wrong, ok? How is it that we can't predict what happens to us in ONE day, but we can predict what the weather is going to be like in FIVE?" Jack stood there speechless as he pondered what was said to him. He knew Shaun wasn't a firm believer in what the weatherman had to say and he did have a point. It was then he remembered about the time when Bobby came by to give him some info about where they were going to stay for a furry con they were going to. They were watching the weather when it was noted that a very large thunderstorm was approaching, and that it was going to be on their travel day. They where thinking that they were going to have to skip the con, when Shaun assured them that everything was going to be fine and that they should go anyway even if it meant forcing them at gunpoint. Bobby and Jack reluctantly left as they began to wonder if they were going to blown off the road. Amazingly though, Shaun had been right and the storm never came. They called Shaun to let him know that they got there safely and early, due to the fact that they were driving relatively faster than normal in an attempt to beat the storm.
"You have a point.....*sigh* alright, I won't try to stop you but will you please be careful?" Shaun had a very large grin on his face when he realized his friend had relented and that he had won.
"I promise you, I'll be careful. Now help me get some of this stuff out to your truck. I want to get out there before the storm hits."
"Shaun."
"I'm kidding you, calm down."
Jessica was lounging on one of the two beach chairs that she a Tina rented, a look of total bliss plastered on her muzzle.
"Ah, I love how the sun warms up my fur. The problem with it though is that it always *yawn* makes me a little sleepy." Tina chuckled at her comment as she got up to some adjustments on her bikini; get a few stares in the process.
"That's why I'm happy I don't have fur."
"Yeah, yeah but at least that makes me all snuggly." Jessica stated a she wrapped her arms around her waist, and hugged herself, at the same time swaying her hips back and forth, the action causing few young males to trip when they failed to notice a hole that had been dug by a young mole.
"True, but I know plenty of guys, and a few girls, that would love to cuddle up with these." Tina emphasized her point as she brought her hands to her large chest and began to play with the two orbs. Jessica stopped playing around as she began looking around in embarrassment.
"Please Tina; don't do that kind of stuff in public!"
"What's wrong my little husky friend? Are you ashamed to be around me?" Jessica looked shocked.
"You know that's not true"
"Than why are you so embarrassed?"
"You know I'm not as much of an exhibitionist as you are, so I'm just not as comfortable with it." Tina stopped her shenanigans and sat back down to join her friend. For as long as she could remember, Tina had always been comfortable with her body. The Great White always looking for an excuse to show herself off. Tina was everything a guy could want. She had white going down from her chin all the way along the bottom of her powerful, finned, tail. The rest of her was a grayish blue that seemed to always cause her to stick out when ever she was in the water. Besides having curves that would cause a priest to quit his job, she was also a little on the buff side, due to her having spent a lot of her time in the water as a swimming instructor for the local high school. After adjusting herself in her seat, to accommodate for the fin that protruded from her back, Tina looked to her friend apologetically.
"I'm sorry honey. I sometimes forget how different out personalities can be."
"That's quite alright Tina. Sometimes I can also be a bit on the jealous side." Jessica barely had time to finish her last statement, until she noticed her check being painfully pinched
"That so cute"
"Hey, cut it out. That hurts!"
Tina released her grip, ruffled the top of her friends head a bit, and made leaned back into her chair as she began to take a little bit of a nap. Jessica grumpily rubbed her cheek before a smile crept onto her face. She began to think of all the times she and Tina spent together. They met in grade school and had remained together ever since. People were a little surprised due to the huge difference in personality, Jessica being more of a shy and timid girl and Tina having more of a wild and crazy persona. The husky began to laugh a little as she began to remember the time Tina started to "show off" a little more. When they graduated college, they had a party to celebrate. They invited a lot of their friends who each brought over a bottle of alcohol. One of the party goers was a crocodile by the name of Kenny, who was famous for his antics whenever he got a big dose of booze. Jessica had been talking with a couple of her friends when she started to her laughter and cheers of encouragement. What she saw when she turned around to investigate caused her to choke on her drink. There was Kenny, in the nude, dancing on one of the tables. Tina, who had only one beer that night and was in sound mind, decided it was good idea to follow suit, as she too striped down to the buff and joined Kenny on the table.
Unbeknownst to Jessica, Tina had developed a crush on her that began after high school and had still remained to this day. She had tried a few times to confess her feeling to her but always chickened out. They were both bi and were very comfortable with their sexuality, though Jessica liked to keep the evidence of it in private. Tina knew that Jessica had checked her out a couple of times and it was the same the other way around. They even made out a few times when they had a little too much to drink. Tina always had fantasies about her until one day she stumbled across the picture of the fishing human on Jessica's Desk. Her face reddened as she looked in the picture and realized how attractive he was. She told Jessica about how the drawing affected her and was surprised to hear the she felt the same way. From that point on her fantasies changed from that of her and Jess, to her, Jess and the human, whom she later found out was named Shaun.
Jessica sat back in her chair as she too began to drift off to sleep.
"Good times"
"Careful with that stuff, don't let it fall in the water."
"I got it, I got it."
The two had arrived at the marina and were making their way along the docks, towards Shaun's new boat.
"Well, where is it man? You've been going on and on about your new boat and haven't told me a thing about it."
"Were almost there, don't get your panties in a knot."
After a few more minutes they finally made it to where Shaun's boat was docked. It was an 82 Catalina sailboat. It was 27 feet long and had a mass height of about 30 to 35 ft. Jack was impressed.
"I can't believe your parents let you have your own boat. Heck, I can't believe they let you have your own place."
"I'm 19 years old man, I'm not 12. Besides my parents wouldn't care even if I was 12."
Shaun didn't have a very good child hood. His father was abusive and always had a beer in his hand. Just for accidentally spilling a little bit of oil in the garage, his father came at him with a butcher's knife. Shaun put a hand on his chest which was also the location of a very nasty scar that was left by that same butcher knife. His mother wasn't any better. She was a big time coke addict and would always lock herself in her room do who knows what kind of drug. She, like her husband, would beat Shaun for almost no reason at all....that is when she even remembered she had a son. The neighbors one night heard screams coming from the house next door and proceeded to call the police. The authorities had arrived just in time to catch a crazed man beating his son with a led bat. The young boy had been rushed to the hospital and the man had been arrested along with his wife.
Jack tilted his head, ashamed for forgetting about all the things that had been told to him about his friend's life.
"I'm sorry man, I keep forgetting about how whacked out your parents were."
"That's alright man. At least that means you aren't plagued by the memories of them."
"Yeah, you're right about that. The only problem is you are."
"True. But lately I've been finding myself forgetting more and more about them. I feel as though they'll be completely whipped from my memories. Anyway, enough about that, help me get the supplies onto the boat."
After loading everything onto the boat, they undid the lines and the boat was then free from the docks and floating without anything to keep it from drifting away. Shaun bid his friend farewell and climbed aboard his boat. Jack then called out to him.
"Remember what we've talked about."
"I know, I know I'll be careful of the so called storm."
"There's also one more thing I want you to be careful of."
"What's that?" Jack began waving his hands around and mimicked a ghostly moan"
"Watch out for the terrors of the Bermuda triangle"
They both began to laugh, remembering about all the so called superstitions and legends of the Bermuda Triangle. Shaun bid one last farewell to his friend as he set off for open sea.
"I'm on a role today!" Shaun exclaimed as he started to fill the third cooler that he brought along, of fish. After about five more minutes of good fishing, Shaun put way his poll, let down the sails so that his boat could just drift along on its own accord and began to enjoy the ambience of the open ocean. He leaned back in his seat as the rocking of the boat put him into a peaceful sleep.
A loud crack bought Shaun out of his slumber. He noticed how dark the sky has gotten and how choppy the waves were. It was then he realized it was the crack of thunder that had awoken him.
"I guess the weatherman was right about the storm." With that he brought the sails up and made an attempt back to shore. The problem was the wind was blowing in the wrong direction and wasn't providing the necessary power to bring him to land.
"This is not good." After a few minutes the weather had gotten considerably worse. 10 foot waves began to toss the boat as if it were a toy. The rain began to pour as Shaun struggled to get to land. All of a sudden a freak waved smashed into the side of the boat, throwing its captain overboard. Shaun's head breached the surface as he gasped for air. He turned around and was just in time to see a second wave slam into his boat again, this time causing it to capsize. It was then he noticed the mast of his boat was heading right for his head. He turned to swim away but it was too late and the lights went out.
A few weeks later...
After spending countless hours in searching, the coast guard had given up on their search and had declared the captain dead.
Jack stood on the dock where his friend's boat once was. He threw a small Reith made of flowers into the sea and said a silent prayer for his lost friend.
