Life of a Trainer(Ch. 1)
#1 of Life of a Trainer
So yeah, this is a first for me, hope you guys enjoy.
Roll the film!
Brrrrriiiinnngg!
"Jaden, get up!"
Groggily, Jaden threw off his covers and smacked the alarm so hard it stung his hand. The unpleasant sound of the alarm and his mom yelling combined was enough to make him get up. Dressing quickly, he pulled on a cap as he took the stairs two at a time. Today was his big day; he was going to become the world's best.
Flying around the corner like Kramer (Figure it out^.=.^), he ran into the kitchen and grabbed a plate of eggs and bacon. "Whoa, Kramer," his mom said, stifling a laugh, "Take it easy! Don't want to get injured on your first day as a trainer, do you?"
Through a full mouth, Jaden said, "No mom."
She smiled again and sat with him at the table. "You have everything?"
"Yeah."
"You're sure?"
"Yes!"
"Okay."
Breakfast was finished in silence, then, as he was washing the dishes, his mom said, "I'll transfer 100,000 Pokécash to your account, but that's all I'll be able to do for now."
"Its fine, mom. I'll just need to pick up some stuff at the Pokémart, then I'll go."
"Sure." After a second she asked, "Pokédex?"
"Yeah."
"Good."
Jaden went back upstairs to pack his stuff, making absolutely sure to grab his Pokédex, and put it in a pack. He slung the now-heavy pack over one shoulder and trudged back downstairs, where his mom was waiting for one last goodbye for who knows how long.
Giving her a hug, Jaden noticed a tear slip down her face, and he whispered in her ear, "Everything will be fine; I'll come back to visit every so often."
She nodded and released him. "Be careful."
"I will."
Then he left, for if he'd stayed any longer, he would not have left. Turning right off the driveway, he smiled into the sky, finally on his journey.
After a few turns, he arrived at the door to the Pokémart. For a second, he stared up at the huge building, awed at the size(no, apparently he'd never been shopping with his mom before), then entered.
He went over to the items and sort of browsed, trying to figure out what to buy. As he looked over the items, he realized how hard the journey would be--and how underprepared he was. He grabbed a couple of Pokéballs, healing spray, and some pokéchow--Pokémon food(What else?). He also grabbed some beef, and several chocolate bars--in case he didn't have time to cook the meat, the bars would be a serviceable lunch.
He frowned as he came upon a somewhat large box. Unable to guess what it was, he turned it around and read the label. It read:
Pokétranslators: Introducing the advancement of human-Pokémon bonds!
_ _ In the bottom right corner was a disclaimer:
!!Warning: Product is a PROTOTYPE! We waive all responsibility for minor or major electrical shocks, explosions, etc.
But when he looked at the price, his jaw dropped: 2000 Pokécash! That was extremely inexpensive, considering it was a prototype of something that could one day be very popular. But then again, perhaps they didn't expect it to work.
Jaden carried his items to checkout. The cashier slowly scanned in the items as Jaden waited impatiently. He rang it up, and in a bright, cheery voice, said, "3145 Pokécash is your total, sir. Will you be paying with cash or credit?"
"Credit," Jaden said.
"I'll need your Pokédex." Jaden handed it and his pack over and the funds were transferred. Then the cashier neatly stacked everything neatly in the pack Jaden had provided, then handed the pack back to him. "Have a nice day!"
Jaden nodded absentmindedly, took his pack and left.
Two days later....
Jaden needed a Pokémon.
His mom had given him one--a basic, Azuril--but it had not liked him, so he had been forced to release it. It was not a hard parting.
Anyways, this fine afternoon, he was seated just off the road, in a small patch or trees, eating hard beef that he'd cooked earlier that morning. He smiled, enjoying the day--when something barreled into him.
The impact sent him tumbling. As soon as he skidded to a stop, he sat up, and standing in front of him was a blue-and-black Pokémon. Jaden slipped out his Pokédex.
Riolu. This Pokémon may look small, but it is very agile and extremely powerful. You can judge its emotion by the aura that emanates from it.
_ _ Jaden flipped the device closed. As he gazed more intently at the Riolu, he realized its eyes shone with tears. The Riolu suddenly rushed at him, throwing its arms around his neck, surprising him. He wrapped his arms around the Riolu, scratching the Pokémon's head. "Shhh, it will be fine. All will be fine."
"Riolu." The whisper escaped the blue Pokémon's trembling lips. Getting an idea, Jaden grabbed the pokétranslator from his backpack and put them on like headphones. "What?"
"Please, you have to help me," the Riolu sobbed. "My trainer, he beats me when I loose a battle, and he yells at me for no reason, and..." The little guy broke off his sentence as Jaden stroked his head comfortingly. "It will be well, little guy." The Riolu nodded into his shoulder.
"There you are!"
The voice came from a young man--about Jaden's age. "Come here, you stupid Pokémon."
"Why don't you come here?" Jaden challenged, anger already rising.
"Fine, dweeb. I will!"
"Stay behind me," Jaden murmered to Riolu, the blue Pokémon happy to oblige. Then Jaden stood.
"Give me him," the other trainer said.
"Okay, I'll give him to you," Jaden said with mock politeness, but when Riolu stiffened behind him, he stepped forward and launched an anger-fueled punch into the arrogant trainers abdomen. As the young man doubled over in pain, Jaden grabbed his shirt and shoved his face up into the other man's face. Grabbing the only Pokéball in the trainers belt, then withdrew Riolu, then released him. "Riolu, you are free from here on out."
The opposing trainer's face stiffened. "Why, you little--"
Jaden cut off the sentence with another punch. "If you or any of your idiot friends lay even a finger on my friend Riolu here, they will have it coming for them. Now get out of my sight, you little bitch!" He punctuated the last sentence with a shove, pushing the panicking trainer towards his escape.
The young man sat down. "Ugh, what a little bitch!"
Riolu edged toward Jaden. "T-thank you."
Jaden smiled at the little guys. "I would've done it whether or not you were afraid of him." The smile disappeared as the thought, then asked, "I know it's a lot to ask right after what just happened, but...will you join my team?"
Riolu's P.O.V.
_ _ The trainer's question caught me off guard and set my mind racing. Should I say yes? My last trainer was so mean to me...but this one, Jaden, seems so nice. But so did my last trainer. Of course, Jaden did just fight on my behalf, and my old one never did that, just captured me. Pulled me away from my friends and family.
_ Even if it costs me my freedom, I must go with Jaden, for I know nothing of how to survive in the wild. So...yes._
Normal P.O.V.
Jaden saw the Riolu's head not, as if deciding something. "So..." he prodded gently.
"Yes." The blue Pokémon's head nodded.
"Great!" Jaden smiled. Drawing out a Pokéball, he said, "I will have to catch you, but I swear I'll let you right back out. Okay?"
Riolu nodded. Jaden tapped him on the forehead with the Pokéball. Riolu turned into a red energy before being captured. The Pokéball rocked, then--bleep! No struggle. "Riolu, come on out!" Jaden said, tossing the ball and letting Riolu out. Riolu stood there, stunned, that Jaden had kept to his word, then rushed into his new trainer's arms again. Jaden slowly stroked Riolu's back, not saying anything. For a couple of minutes, they hugged, then Riolu backed away a little. "Thank you," he said.
Jaden just smiled, glad he'd helped. Then he noticed a faint blush on Riolu's cheeks, but decided against mentioning it.
"Okay, Riolu, we should head on to Firbank Town."
Riolu nodded and walked next to Jaden as they started their journey together.
Three days later...
Jaden yawned, then stood and dressed quickly, ready to explore Firbank. They'd arrived late last night and only had time for a quick dinner before they checked into a hotel and crashed.
He went over and shook Riolu, the small fighting Pokémon looking adorable. "Riolu, its time to get up."
"Wh-what?"
"I said, its time to get up."
Riolu yawned and stretched. "Okay." Then his eyes grew more energetic, and said, "Come on, let's see the city!"
"Okay, okay," Jaden said, laughing as Riolu pulled him out into the street. "Hmmm, where to first?"
Before they could decide where to go, however, a voice from behind them said, "Hey, you! Wanna battle?"
Jaden and Riolu spun around and were surprised to see a young man--a few years younger than Jaden, judging from his size--waving them down. Jaden called back, "One second!" Then, turning and crouching before Riolu, he asked, "Do you want to?"
Riolu frowned, obviously thinking hard.
Riolu's P.O.V.
I don't know...Jaden was so kind to me in the forest, but people can get a little crazy during a battle. He promised not to hurt me, but still...do I give him my trust and believe he won't beat me, or do I not believe him and refuse to battle?
"Hurry up over there!" the younger trainer yelled.
"I said, give me a minute!" Jaden yelled back, before turning back to me. "Well, buddy? I swear I won't hurt you if you lose." He smiled. "I don't think you will, however."
Well, at least he's sincere. "I will battle, Jaden."
Jaden nodded. "Are you sure? This should be your choice, I don't want to influence you one way or another."
"I will," I repeated. "For you." This last part was uttered quietly so Jaden couldn't hear.
Normal P.O.V.
"Okay." Jaden nodded. Louder, so the younger trainer could hear, "Okay! We'll battle, one-on-one!"
"Good, I wouldn't want you to refuse!" the younger trainer yelled back.
"Okay, Riolu, fight with me!" Jaden shouted, choosing Riolu to battle. Riolu darted out in front of his trainer.
"Charmeleon, come on out!" Throwing a Pokéball, the trainer sent out a Charmeleon(No duh ^.=.^)
"Huh, a Charmeleon," Jaden muttered, pulling out his Pokédex.
_ Charmeleon. The flame Pokémon. Due to it's firey tail, the Pokémon shines with the brightness of a star, making it easy to spot._
"Okay." Jaden said. "I'll have the first move, if you please! Riolu, quick attack!"
Riolu darted toward the Charmeleon, his body leaving behind a whitish blur, he was moving so fast. He landed a punch on Charmeleon, then darted away again, leaving no target.
"Huh, fast!" The other trainer said. "But not fast enough! Charmeleon, ember!"
The Charmeleon opened its mouth and sent a small fireball roaring toward Riolu. Unable to dodge in time, Riolu was knocked backward, taking the full brunt of the attack. "Riolu!" Jaden shouted. "Are you okay?"
"Yeah," Riolu grunted, struggling to his feet.
"Okay..." Jaden, unsure for the smallest moment, then shouted, "Okay, use counter!"
Riolu let Charmeleon attack--"Charmeleon, use ember again!"--and then kicked the flame Pokémon. "No, Charmeleon!" the younger trainer shouted. "Get up!"
Charmeleon struggled to its feet. "Now, use smokescreen!" Charmeleon breathed out smoke, hazing the whole arena. "Okay, now ember!"
Riolu, frantic because of the smoke, had no time to react as Charmeleon's ember hit him in the back. He fell.
"Hah! That got him!" the opponent yelled.
Jaden smiled and said, "Look again!"
The image of Riolu on the ground began to fade away. "Oh, no.. Double team! Charmeleon, behind you!" But it was too late, as Riolu's fist smashed into the back of Charmeleon's head. Not hard enough to knock Charmeleon out, but enough to send the fire Pokémon to the ground. As he struggled to his feet, his trainer said, "Okay, Charmeleon, that's enough." Turning to Jaden, he said, "We submit."
Jaden ignored him, focused as he was on Riolu. He rushed out and caught the fighting Pokémon before he hit the ground. "Riolu!"
Riolu turned his head toward Jaden and said, "I actually did it. We won."
Jaden smiled faintly. "Because of you."
"No," Riolu said, shaking his head, "Because you believed in me."
Smiling again, Jaden tapped Riolu on the chest with his Pokéball and said, "Come back, buddy. Let's get you to Nurse Joy."
Riolu closed his eyes and allowed himself to be sucked into the Pokéball as red energy. "Can we come with you?" the other trainer asked, having come over. Jaden looked up and accepted the cash offered to him by the younger trainer.
"Sure, some company would be nice," Jaden said. "Name's Jaden, by the way. Is Charmeleon okay?"
"Chris. Yeah, he's fine." Chris held his hand out for a shake, and Jaden took it.
"We're trying to become the league champions." Jaden said absentmindedly on the way to the Pokécenter.
"Hey, so are we!" Chris exclaimed. "Maybe we could train together?"
"Cool," Jaden said.
"Now, let's get to the Pokémon Center and get Riolu healed." Jaden nodded, and they began to run.
They burst through the doors. "Nurse Joy!" Jaden called between breaths.
Nurse Joy came hustling out, obviously concerned by the two panting trainers. "What's wrong?"
Jaden gestured as he spoke, "Chris here and I were battling, and my Riolu was injured badly. Can you help him?"
"Of course, of course," Nurse Joy said. "Just let him out for me, okay?" Jaden nodded and released Riolu, who was unconscious. "Chansey!" she called.
Two Chanseys scurried out of a back room and took Riolu. Nurse Joy smiled reassuringly. "Riolu will be fine. Can I do anything else for you?"
"Actually," Jaden said, thinking about it, "yes. Chris and I need rooms, can you spare two?"
"Yes."
Jaden paid for both rooms, then went upstairs with Chris. "See you tomorrow?"
"Yeah," Chris said, exhausted.
They went into their respective rooms and crashed on the bed.
The next day...
Jaden and Chris came in to the Pokémon Center that was serving as their hotel. It had been a long day, they had just eaten dinner, and they both were ready to go to bed.
As they padded the desk, Jaden told Chris, "Go ahead, I'll see you in the morning."
He strode over and leaned on the counter. Nurse Joy looked up from the spreadsheet she was working on. "How can I help you, Jaden?"
Glancing around and lowering his voice, Jaden asked, "Can Riolu sleep with me tonight?"
Nurse Joy also lowered her voice(see if you can figger out why^.=.^)and thought out loud, "Perhaps...it wouldn't hurt..."
"So he can?" Jaden asked eagerly.
"Why not?" Nurse Joy said, pleased that such trainer-Pokémon relationships did occur occasionally. "Chansey, will you please bring out Riolu?"
After about thirty seconds, during which Jaden waited impatiently, Chansey brought out Riolu. The fighting Pokémon was out cold. Carefully, Riolu was transferred to Jaden's arms, and the young trainer bid Nurse Joy goodnight and retired to his room as well.
Jaden set Riolu on the bed--he would sleep on the couch. Riolu must have been lost in the land of dreams, for a faint blush spread through his cheeks, and he murmered, "I love you, Jaden."
Smiling, Jaden said, "I love you too, Riolu," and gave the fighting Pokémon a kiss on the cheek.
Then he went over and laid on the couch, and as soon as his head hit the pillows, he was asleep.
The next day(Again?).....
When Jaden woke up the next morning, he took a quick minute in the shower, then got dressed. He took a soda from the cabinet--Barq's--and took a swig as he went back into the living room. Riolu was blearily sitting on the side of the bed. Jaden smiled. "Good morning!" Riolu rubbed his eyes. "Morning."
Answering the Pokémon's unasked question, Jaden said, "Two days, more or less."
"What's that?" Riolu asked, noticing the bottle in Jaden's hand.
"Oh, this? Barq's." Jaden smiled and went to the kitchen, correctly guessing the aura Pokémon would want some. The refrigerator opened, then closed, and Jaden came back out. He handed the extra bottle to Riolu, and the Pokémon opened it and took a swig. "Don't drink too fast, it's fizzy," Jaden said.
Nodding, Riolu took another sip.
About twenty minutes later, they were walking out the door of the Pokémon Center with Chris and on their way to Jerzara Town, the nearest town with a Gym.
Cliffhanger's a bitch, eh?
