Life of a Trainer (Ch. 2)
#2 of Life of a Trainer
The second chapter in my story Life of a Trainer. Hope you guys enjoy!
Hello again, guys, and welcome back to Life of a Trainer!
Yes, I know I've been gone for a while, but that did not give
me an excuse to not write!
All I have to say is,
THIS IS NOT A TRAINER'S TALE!!
Roll the film. {Exasperated sigh}
Jaden smiled and laughed as he pulled to a stop, Riolu skidding up next to him. "Man," the fighting Pokémon panted, "You're fast."
"I took track a while back and never really stopped running," Jaden responded.
"Where's Chris?"
"Dunno," Jaden said. "Probably somewhere back there, but I'd assume we have a good ten minutes, based on how far we ran." Concerned, he glanced down at Riolu. "You sure you're okay, pup?"
Riolu nodded, still taking huge gulping breaths. When they had left Yomar Town a few days before, Riolu had barely been healed.
Dramatic flashback...
_ "Are you sure?" Nurse Joy asked. "He still has a little difficulty running."_
_ Jaden nodded. "Yeah, it's as important as it gets that Chris and I get to Jerzara Town as quick as possible. I've heard wind of rumors that a new Gym opened in my old home town, and I need to ask the Leader in Jerzara if this is true."_
_ Nurse Joy nodded. "I understand, just be very careful. You wouldn't want him hurt this close to such an important battle."_
_ "I won't," Jaden said, shaking his head. "I'll carry him for most of the first day, and let him walk on his own the second day. No running until the third day or later," he added when he saw Nurse Joy's face._
_ "Okay," she said. "Still...okay. It was nothing."_
_ Again, Jaden smiled. "I'm sorry if it's a bother, but this is really important to us. If any other trainers come and demand their Pokémon before they're healed, tell them that this was a special occasion, a family emergency, if you will."_
Back to the future...
Jaden smiled again at Riolu. "They should be here soon."
Just then, his Pokédex beeped at him. "Excuse me, boss, but THIS IS a text message."
_ _ Smiling at his ringtone, Jaden flipped up the screen and read it. Slowly, the happy expression faded from his face, replaced by one of horror. "No...no, no, NO!" He shouted. "Riolu, come on! Family emergency!"
Without question, the blue Pokémon jumped up and sprinted after him. Jaden smiled ironically; just as he thought of that memory, it happened.
Some five minutes later, he came upon a widening of the trail, meant for cars to pass each other through. A cop car was parked there; inside of it sat Officer Jenny.
"Officer Jenny!" Jaden shouted between gulps of air.
"What is it? ...Jaden, I believe," she asked.
"Family emergency," he gasped. "My...mother."
"Get in," she said. "Is there anyone you need to pick up on the way?"
Jaden nodded. "A friend, Chris. He should be walking with a Charmeleon."
Officer Jenny nodded. "Okay, here we go." Jaden just barely got his seat belt buckled when the car screeched off in the direction they came.
Thirty seconds later, Chris came into view. Jaden pointed him out to Jenny. "That's him."
The car slid to a stop. "Get in," Jaden said, "Family emergency. And, ironically, we can check out that rumor."
_That made his mind,_thought Jaden as Chris jumped in, pulling Charmeleon with him.
A trip that took around three weeks on foot took under a day in the speeding car. Officer Jenny smiled as Omalo Town came into view. "I bet you guys have never traveled that fast before."
Chris shook his head. "Never. Thanks for the ride."
"No problem," she said. "If you boys ever have anything else you need, contact me, okay?"
Jaden nodded, tense, and jumped out of the car as soon as it stopped. Riolu followed, and Chris and Charmeleon as quickly as they could get out of the car. They all waved to Officer Jenny as they ran into town.
"I don't know where I'm going!" Chris shouted.
"Same!" both Charmeleon and Riolu agreed, nearly simultaneously.
"Just follow me!" Jaden tossed over his shoulder. "Seventy-eight fifty!" he added in case he ran too fast.
Some five minutes later, Jaden arrived huffing and puffing at his doorstep, Riolu pulling up behind him. Chris followed a few seconds later, and after him, Charmeleon. Jaden pounded on the doorbell a few times. Almost immediately, someone arrived at the door. It was the nurse who usually attended to him, Mrs. Homer. "Oh, Jaden. Come on in. She isn't doing very well. I don't expect her to live through the night. However, she is still conscious."
Jaden nodded and brushed past her, Riolu, Chris, and Charmeleon following. Chris offered an indistinct 'hi' as he hurried past.
After he pounded up the steps, Jaden quietly opened the door to his mother's room. Sadly, he knelt by the bed and picked up her hand. "It's me, Mom," he said.
"Oh, Jaden, I'd hoped you'd come. I fear my time is short, and that you wouldn't arrive in time." Tears filled her eyes. "I only wish to say, son, that I love you so very much."
Jaden's eyes filmed over as well, but he blinked and they faded away. He had to stay strong, if only for his mother. "I probably haven't said it enough, but I love you too."
She smiled. Mrs. Homer arrived and pulled Jaden away. "Let her rest," she said. "Sleep may just pull her through this."
Sadly, Jaden nodded. Turning back in the doorway, he said, "Goodbye, Mom," with utmost finality.
"Goodbye," she said faintly. "I love you."
"I love you too." She smiled, and he turned away before she could see the tears in his eyes.
Striding back to his old room, he climbed into bed and fell asleep.
He awoke in the deepest part of the morning, when all is still and cold, when all waits for the warmth of the morning, and immediately knew something was wrong. He stretched as he climbed out of bed and shuffled out of his room. There was a light on in his mother's room.
Therein stood Mrs. Homer, Chris, Charmeleon, and Riolu, as well as his older brother, Dane, and Dane's girlfriend, Jane. "I had hoped to call her 'Mother' someday," Jane whispered.
Jaden dropped to his knees next to the bed and grabbed his mother's hand. Although she was still warm, he could tell just by feeling her hand that she had gone stiff. "No..." he whispered. Riolu stepped up beside him and put a paw on his back, comforting him.
Then he felt a presence_in the room, a _pressure that seemed to stifle everything. What is going on?_He thought. _Am I imagining something?
A massive voice that was as large as the universe, as unstoppable as the tide, as strong as the sun said to him, No, Jaden. You are not.
Jaden gasped. G-God?
_ Yes,_ the voice responded, I am God.
How am I supposed to get through this? Jaden asked. How can I continue without her? ...I can't.
_ Be comforted, Jaden,_ the Lord said. You will see your mother in heaven.
_ _ When he opened his eyes, he saw a glowing figure, clothed not in the flowing robes of royalty, but in the tattered shirt and trousers of a peasant. Jaden nodded, once, then rose, his sad expression replaced by one of immense joy and triumph. A radiant glow was emitting from his face.
Riolu's P.O.V.
I watched Jaden rise, and as he did, I noticed his expression was not one of sadness, but one of immense joy. And his whole body glowed a brilliant yellow, illuminating the room. "Jaden," I asked, "why aren't you sad? Didn't your mom just die?"
He slowly turned his head to face me. "I have seen God."
Such a simple sentence, but one so full of meaning as well. I remember Jaden telling me stories from what he called the 'Bible', and everything revolved around how God is good and how he will serve you to tell you to serve others.
I smiled and walked him back to bed.
And so it ends! ...or does it?
This was a sad chappy, and I'm sorry, but
it had to be done.
That concludes this chapter of Life of a Trainer, I hope
you guys enjoyed, and hey, cliffhangers really are a
bitch! Who knew?!
Anyways, I'll be seeing you guys when I see you guys,
Goodbye!
