The Dark Descent Chapter 11
#11 of The Dark Descent
In the distance, a group of four could see their destination. A place where only nightmares were spawned, but the promise of gold still drew them in. They came prepared for a fight, but nothing could possibly prepare them for what they must endure. Watch as a blaziken, a gallade, an alakazam, and a dwarf are all forced to fight for their lives. They will be pushed to their absolute limits, both physically, and mentally. Only one thing is certain, none will escape unscathed.
Thea was laying in the tent, on her back, staring up at the beautiful dwarf on top of her. "Hilda..." She whispered as she looked over the dwarf's bare body. Her breasts were the first thing that caught her eye. She couldn't stop herself from reaching up, and groping them. She always found women more attractive than men, but the way that she was brought up, she was led to believe that wasn't normal. But she couldn't hide her desire anymore, she couldn't hide from herself.
"Shh, let me take care of you." Hilda smirked, and then pushed her tongue straight into Thea's mouth, exploring it with her own tongue.
Thea felt like this was so wrong, but she didn't object. She didn't want to stop her, not really anyway. But something about this felt strange to her, and it wasn't just the fact that she was loving this. She couldn't remember what led to this. She didn't know why Hilda was suddenly doing this. And then, slowly, she began to realize the truth of the matter. It was just a dream. Thea began to open her eyes, and when she did, the first thing that she saw was that she was now alone. "Hilda?" She whispered, sitting upright. She hoped that she hadn't said anything too embarrassing while she was sleeping. She knew that she sometimes talked in her sleep. It was pretty rare, but it happened. She crawled out of the tent, and looked around for the dwarf, but there was no signs of her. Hilda's clothing was gone, but Thea's robes were still there. She wondered where she could've went to. She then saw the wooden door to the right had been opened. She thought that perhaps Hilda decided to go check out what was ahead. Thea stood up, and grabbed her robes, but they were still soaked. She stood there, deciding to wring the water out of her robes. As she did so, she looked up towards the dark passageway that she had taken to get into this place. For a moment, she thought she saw Hilda's figure in the darkness. "Hilda?"
It was then the sound of a door creaking open could be heard. "What?" Hilda replied, accidentally startling the alakazam.
Thea jumped a little, quickly looking back to the dwarf as she dropped her damp robes. "You nearly scared me half to death." She pressed a hand to her chest, her heart thumping away. She looked down to Hilda's left hand, seeing that she was holding a bottle of glowing red goo, but the bottle illuminating their camp was still there. She guessed Hilda had found another bottle of goo, or she found an empty bottle, and made her own lantern out of the glow worms. "Where did you go to?"
"I went ahead to scout out the area." Hilda replied, noticing just how much she had startled Thea. "Are you alright?"
"Yes, it was just quite the fright you gave me." Thea smiled, before noticing that she was standing in the nude. She quickly picked up her robes. "You should've waited for me. Something could've happened to you."
"I didn't want to wake you up. Besides, you needed the rest... You should wait for those robes to dry off before putting them on again. Trust me, wearing soaked clothes doesn't feel too good." Hilda then sat down near the alakazam. "I'd undress again, but fuck it... I can deal with it."
Thea noticed how Hilda didn't seem to mind her being nude at all. It was strange to her. Where she came from, revealing too much leg was considered rather provocative. To her, it felt kind of nice to not worry about such with Hilda. She dropped her wet robes nearby, and sat down on the hard stone floor with her. "What did you see when you scouted ahead?" She inquired.
"The door to the right leads straight to a dead end. It looks like it used to lead somewhere, but it has caved in on itself. There's no using that passageway. The door to the left however, it seems to lead to a cave system. The path branches off into two directions, straight ahead, and left. I went straight ahead, and I found this. It looked like someone dropped it." Hilda then reached into her pocket, and pulled out a small journal. "I thought you might want to see it, seeing as I heard you monks are into books. I didn't stop to read it, so I don't know if it'll be useful. If not, we can always use the pages to start a fire."
Thea then took the journal, and began looking through the pages. Quietly, she began reading through it, hoping to learn something new.
"I fear I will not be leaving this place. The monsters here are unlike any I have ever encountered. Upon discovery of the walking mutilated corpses, I suspected that this was all the work of a necromancer. But, after plunging deeper into the depths of this place, I fear the origin of these creatures maybe far more sinister than I could've imagined. Before I start detailing everything I know about these creatures, let me start by introducing myself, and how I walked straight into my grave. My name is Yurithian Glaverick, a nahtai. In case you do not know what that is, we are better known as those 'people with octopuses for heads.' I have studied how creatures work for a very long time. My fascination started early, when our hunters skinned animals. Seeing the muscles and inner workings always made me curious. Then, I remember my brother cutting open a snake to show me its still beating heart. I thought it was amazing, how it continued to beat even after being cut out entirely. The beating stopped over time, but that experience stayed with me. It made me wonder how it was possible, and inspired me to find answers.
People call me sick, insane for cutting up bodies. I find it insane that they halt the flow of knowledge simply for the sake of traditions. They call it desecration. It should be a sin to let a perfectly good cadaver to go to waste. Through death, we can learn how our bodies work during life. Anyway, let me get straight to the point. I know that there is a chance that I may not make it out of this place alive. In the event that I do die, and someone finds this journal, I hope that one day my findings will be published, or that it at least provides some insight to the poor unfortunate soul who happens to find this journal. Without further delay, let me show you my findings. Seeing as these monstrosities have no names, I will be giving them names as I go along.
The mangled.
These creatures seem to be a mix of humans, and other creatures from dwarves, to eevees. Their bodies are varied. Each one of these creatures are unique, having different limbs, varying numbers of eyes, different kinds of bodies, and heads. However, all have one thing that ties them together. They are all clearly mixed up with some other race, and they all have black blood.
Gorenyx.
It appears to have started out as an onix, but somewhere down the line, it was corrupted. Like the mangled, it is a hybrid of two different creatures. Unlike the mangled, this creature is huge in size, and appears to only reside in the water. It moves very much like an eel, although I have seen it wrap around boats like a large boa constrictor. Within its mouth are many human fingers, which I believe pushes its pray towards the human head that seems to act as a second mouth. It must eat its victims rather slowly due to the size of this second mouth. Or perhaps it crushes its food using its immense strength before eating. I am unsure as I have only seen this creature once, and I have no wish to see it again. I actually didn't give this monstrosity this name. One of the deep dwellers called it by this name.
The deep dwellers.
These appear to be non-hostile transformed beings who seem incapable of lying. The first one I saw informed me that he used to be human. He was so disfigured, it was tough to even recognize him as something that used to be human. He had no torso, his organs were spread out, hanging, suspended from the ceilings and walls, yet they continued to work away. I noticed that the organs seemed different, as if encased in some sort of thick flesh that kept the organs safe from infection. Or perhaps it was some kind of infection that is unknown to me. It begged to be killed, but the information it provided was far too useful to simply kill it. I intended to ask it more questions before leaving this place, but I may never meet it again due to the fact the Gorenyx now stops us from going back. There is another one I have met, she said she used to be a gardevoir, but she certainly doesn't look like one anymore. She has the skin of a slug, dark yellow in colour. What she told me is what inspired the name for them. She has tried to leave this place, but every time she tries to leave, it is like an invisible force is trying to pull her back in. When she tries to fight against this invisible force, she feels nothing but pain, as if her entire body was set on fire. They cannot leave, they are forever residents of this deep, dark labyrinth of nightmares.
Gusher.
You will smell these creatures before you see them. They come in many shapes and sizes, but they all have the same translucent puss bags located on their backs, and chests. I have reason to believe that these puss bags may actually be many tiny translucent stomachs. My reason for believing this is because when one conducted an autopsy, I found a finger tip in one sack, a ring in another, and several broken teeth in one sack located on its back. The foul smelling liquid in these sacks also appears to be stomach acid. They also have dark red eyes, from which dark red blood spurts forth from. This attack seems to be mostly a deterrent, a warning for anything it perceives as a threat. The blood seems harmless, but the stench is horrible. The effective range of this attack is around about twenty foot. It posses a far more deadly attack. It is capable of vomiting acid from the sacks located all over its body. The effective range of this attack is around about ten foot. The acid is rather nasty, so face coverings such as leather masks or helmets are strongly advised when dealing with these creatures. Clothing can be removed before the acid burns through it. I would've conducted an autopsy on this creature, but it was too dangerous as the creature was filled with acid.
The observer.
It follows us, watching us. If it is hostile, it has not attacked yet. It lurks in the darkness, keeping its identity hidden. I think it is very curious... Maybe it has taken an interest in me... If I get a closer look, I will add more notes in the future.
I saw it again... It is still watching... From what I can gather, it is about my height and build. Maybe it is actually a person. Perhaps I should reconsider adding this to my journal."
Thea then read out the last hastily scrawled words. "Not a person..."
Hilda looked over Thea's shoulder, reading it with her. "Looks like this observer is what got him." She thought aloud.
"Perhaps he got away, but dropped it while he was escaping." Thea replied, hoping that whoever wrote this didn't perish. This place was an awful place to die.
Hilda could tell that was just wishful thinking on Thea's part. "Maybe..." She simply replied, but she highly doubted that this particular person made it out. But, she guessed some people must've made it out. After all, she seemed to recall Robin telling them that he had met survivors of this place.
Thea put the journal down, and looked to the dwarf. She still felt a little embarrassed about the dream she had about her. She had to admit, for a dwarf, Hilda was a very good looking woman. She felt ashamed of even thinking of her like that, but she couldn't help it. She felt as if her mind was being slowly corrupted by this place, or maybe sleeping next to the attractive dwarf stirred up something inside her. "... Hilda? Do you..." She was about to ask quite a personal question, but she quickly decided against it due to the fact Hilda had told her not to ask about her partner, or previous partner. Thea was still fairly uncertain if Hilda was in any kind of relationship. She seemed very against talking about that kind of stuff.
She saw Thea, trying to avoid eye contact, as if she were embarrassed. "What?" Hilda asked, curious to know what she was about to ask her.
"Forget about it... I know you don't want me inquiring about your partner, or past partner." Thea told her.
Hilda had a feeling that Thea, for some reason, desperately wanted to know about her previous partner. With a sigh, she spoke once more. "You're a nosey bitch, aren't you..?"
"I-I didn't mean to pr-" Thea was quickly interrupted by the dwarf.
"Don't apologize..." Hilda went quiet for a moment, and then she stood up, walking over to the wall, resting her back against it. She was thinking, guessing that perhaps speaking about this might not be a bad idea. It had been so long since she had talked about herself with anyone. She hated to admit it, but she kind of liked talking to Thea about everything last night. Thea was right, it did feel good to just talk about things. Besides, if she died here, there would be no one left to remember the one person other than her mother that actually gave a shit about her. "Seeing as you want to know so badly, I might as well tell you right now about my one, and only partner..."
Thea quickly turned her gaze towards Hilda. She wasn't expecting her to just open up like this. "You don't have to talk about it, if you do not wish to."
Hilda knew this was going to be painful, bringing up old memories, but she wanted to finally tell someone her story. Seeing as Thea was so willing to just sit there and listen, she felt like this was the perfect time to just speak up. "I want to." She replied as she decided to walk back over to Thea, and sit down next to her. "I'm not used to just speaking out and telling people all the awful shit that has happened to me, and everyone I care about... So I will just start off by telling you straight away, my last relationship didn't end happily..."
Thea's golden eyes met Hilda's, and straight away, she could already see the pain in her eyes. "Your partner, how did you meet him?" She asked, hoping that by starting with how they got together, it might bring a smile to the dwarf's face.
"Him? It wasn't a him, it was a her. A lopunny." Hilda told Thea, expecting the monk's next words to be some preachy crap about how women shouldn't be with other women, but that didn't happen. Instead, the monk just smiled. "She saw me offering my services, and decided to hire me. I thought she was going to hire me to take out some rich old husband, or older relative, but she just hired me as a bodyguard, and took me to her mansion."
"Her mansion?" Thea quickly repeated, thinking that perhaps she had misheard the dwarf.
"Yeah. Can you believe that? A pretty little lopunny trusting me in her big expensive home. There were lots of things around to steal, and I told her she was stupid to let a sellsword wonder around her home, and potentially steal her shit. She just turned around and said, 'you are the first truthful sellsword I have met.' It turned out that she was smarter than she looked. Long story short, we became friends...and then she started teaching me things. She taught me how to read and write. She didn't like how much I swore, but she got used to it. I lived with her for an entire year, she let me share her home, her food, no one has ever been that nice to me before. I kept expecting her to tell me to assassinate people, I thought she might be giving me all these things to use me as her tool, but she didn't... Her name was Chloe." Hilda said with a smile on her face, remembering all the stuff they used to do together.
"Chloe? She sounds like she was an amazing woman." Thea could hear the clear sense of endearment in her voice. It was clear that Hilda thought a lot of this woman.
"She was. She never tried to use me, or hurt me, not even when I lost my temper... All she really wanted was someone she could trust, that's why she really hired me. She wanted someone truthful, and blunt... I also think she got off on me being so dominant." Hilda said with a happy look on her face. "She was so cute... I remember the night we got together as a couple. I made the first move, she thought I was joking, and then I kissed her. That look on her face...I thought that she was going to throw me out of her home, but then, she kissed back... Everything was perfect."
Thea noticed how her expression suddenly changed, changing into a look of pure anger. "What happened?" She softly asked.
"War... A fucking pointless war for land! We lost everything, our home, our lives, everything good was fucking torn away from us! And then, we were ambushed, I told her to run, and she did... I stayed and fought, I didn't give a single fuck if I died, I just wanted to get her to safety. But, she ran in the worst possible direction... When I found her, and saw what they had done to her, I just fucking screamed, and killed every last fucking bastard that lay a fucking finger on her! I remember just bashing in this one man's face I with my fists. I wanted to make him suffer, so I stuffed a fucking rock right down his throat... They fucking hit me hard, but it didn't stop me. I was ready to fucking die at that point, I didn't care how hard they hit me, so long as I dragged them down with me... What they did to her is un-fucking-forgivable! I thought I could have a normal life, but after seeing what they did to her, I was just fucking reminded of what a fucking shithole this world really is... After that, I just felt like killing every last bastard I came across. I roamed everywhere as a sellsword... In case you were wondering, she died after they were finished using her... They murdered her... THEY FUCKING TOOK HER AWAY FROM ME!" Hilda yelled as she slammed her fists against the cold hard stone floor, which made Thea jump a little. Tears escaped her eyes, flowing down her cheeks as she remembered exactly how her love died.
Thea quickly regretted even bringing this up, seeing the end result. However, she tried to calm the dwarf. She first rested a hand on Hilda's shoulder, and looked right into her teary eyes. "This world can be cruel... No one should have to suffer through such pain alone..." Then, the alakazam pulled Hilda into a hug.
Hilda was a little surprised at the sudden hug, but seeing as she was upset, she accepted it. She never talked to anyone about this before. While it was upsetting, now at least one person might understand why she was so pissed off at the world. She closed her teary eyes, and hugged the alakazam. This was a side of her that only two people had ever seen before. Eventually, she pulled herself away from the alakazam. "Uh, sorry... I don't normally do this..."
"It's perfectly normal to feel upset when talking about these things... We all need someone to talk to sometimes." Thea could see that the dwarf seemed to be calming down a little. Hilda was scary when she was angry, but she grew to realize that this woman wasn't a bad person.
Hilda wiped away her tears, and took a few deep breaths before turning her gaze to Thea once more. "When I first met you, I thought you were a stuck up bitch... I was wrong about you. You're a good woman. Just don't try to stop me from taking anything of worth again, it's how I survive." She told the alakazam.
Thea was a little offended at what Hilda just said, but she decided to take the compliment. "Thank you, and I can't promise that I won't try to change your mind when taking things." She replied to her with a smile.
"Hah, you might try, but you won't stop me..." Hilda smiled, starting to warm up to the alakazam. They were completely different people, and yet, she got the feeling that they both understood how the other person saw things, even if they didn't exactly agree with the other's opinions. "Thanks again for listening to me rambling, and crying."
"If you ever have something on your mind, I will always be willing to hear you out." Thea told her. She knew from experience that talking about these things could help people get over the past, or just make them feel better. Either way, the outcome was usually positive.
Hilda felt like she should've been over this stuff a long time ago, but she couldn't let go of the past so easily. "Wring out your robes, and when they're dry enough, we'll get moving." She told her.
Thea then continued to wring out her robes, just as she was doing before Hilda walked back in and almost gave her a heart attack. She hoped that once they get moving again, they may meet up with the men once again. She felt comfortable around Hilda, but she knew there was safety in numbers.
Author's note: Once again, big thank you to BigBossSonic for checking for any spelling mistakes and all that stuff. And thank you all for reading! :)
