“Yeah that's us, when one of the primary Gateway centres was first to be opened in Chimborazo, my family managed to barter the negotiations between the Unity program and local governments." he replied and gave a shrug “We also developed a lot of the technology and hardware involved in the Unity program or own the companies that do. That's why I am here on Water earth in the first place, I can't go into it much but some of the tech is in need of upgrading and repair."

“So... they sent you instead of someone who had gone through the program?" Dredger asked and Alex chuckled blushing.

“No, no, I elected to come. I have always wanted to come, my love for Phins aside, I was told Water Earth was beautiful and had to see it for myself." he answered with a smile and picked up a piece of food his eyes meeting the Phins “And so far, I have not had a reason to regret that decision."

“It has its good parts," Dredger informed him with a smile “I'm sure Land Earth is the same though."

“It has its moments," he responded with a chuckle “so... can I ask... why were you so drunk last night?" Dredger stiffened and then just seemed to slump a little.

“I.. have not had it easy," he responded softly “I have some fused vertebrae in my back from the accident that needed operations to help with... some were removed. To this day they still hurt and I am shorter than I used to be due to them. I was unemployed for almost two years since the accident. No one would employ someone who was as dangerous as me. Coupled with the memories that come like the tide and nightmares I have every night... I needed an out." he gave a soft sad whistle and looked at his reflection in the water around him. Alex was alarmed at the mention of the back injury but let the Amplus continue his explanation.

“The only thing I found that silences the memories and the nightmares is to drink," he continued seeming guilty about the admission “At least for a while the pain, mental and physical goes away." Alex nodded slowly then smiled softly.

“Well then, I may not be here long and we may not be able to interact much outside of the room due to those silly regulations but while I am here, how about I help you find a better way to silence those voices?" Alex asked making the Phin look up at him with surprise “Let me help you find a reason to go on, a way to do it without the drink."

“Why?" Dredger asked simply “Why do you want to help me?"

“Isn't it obvious?" Alex retorted with a smile meeting the large Phins blue eyes “Because I want to, because I don't want to see you sad and because I like you."

The next few days were hard for Dredger without the drink. They did find one or two ways to interact together outside of the room, always when no one was around. Dredger teaching him dive ball when the room was empty and despite wanting to be nude, they decided to remain clothed.

When they were in the room, Dredger would tell Alex about himself and the wonders of his world and Alex would do the same. They would trade stories and tales about themselves or of the beauty of their respective worlds till either one had to go get them food or they went to sleep.

I expect you to still be going strong and regardless of what anyone else says about it, I want to go out for a meal with you. With one final kiss he left the room leaving Dredger in the now quiet room alone. Yet the Amplus now had happy memories he could turn to whenever he felt the urge to drink. Returning to Land Earth was hard but Alex had no choice in the matter, if he didn't go now he wouldn't be able to for another five days. While it wouldn't bother him that much, there was a schedule he had to keep to.

His life returned to normal mostly, he still dreamed of Dredger wishing he could be with him when he swam at the beach or in his pool. He felt lonely even though he was surrounded by his family and friends a lot. If he said he didn't miss the Amplus it would have been a blatant lie.

He did some digging into the incident on his side of the Gateway. While it wasn't big news on Land Earth there was still information to be found when he looked in the right places. It was as he had suspected it to be, cover up and finger pointing by the company who ran the site and blame lumped on the Amplus who had no one to defend him.

It turned out Dredger wasn't the only one who was fired over the accident however, although he was the one who suffered the most. An Album overseer and site manager had been fired as well however they got away quietly from it all. There were several pictures of the dead, pictures that were chilling and shocking to witness and Alex realised just how lucky Dredger was.

He wanted nothing more than to contact the Amplus and tell him it wasn't his fault or to run into his arms and comfort him. Sadly there was nothing he could do, there was a dimension between them and he would not be permitted passage through the Gateway without official business unless he was part of the Unity Program.

He did look into joining the program, yet while he had the education and the personality that would make him a perfect candidate he wasn't permitted to. His parents would hear nothing of it, saying that he had to think of the family empire that would be waiting for him upon their retirement.

Dredger meantime had things easier for a while as well. He stayed off the drink like Alex had told him to and while the detox was difficult, he always pictured the human with him helping him get through it. His nightmares abated and he no longer saw his memories as painfully as he once did, the images starting to dull and fade from his mind.

He Missed Alex badly, the first person who had shown interest in him and a genuine interest in his well being. He fought to stay strong for the human who had brightened his world and even the crushing depths of water he worked under didn't bother him any more. However it took a several months before he started being sick most mornings. He dismissed it for a couple of months before finally he decided to see the doctor. That was when he was given news he had never expected, he was a pregnant.

He was forced to give up his job and go into seclusion at a pregnancy clinic for single parent Phins. What made it more difficult and upsetting was he was now being sent away from the one place he had been able to call home for years. Alex had finally gained his chance to go through the Gateway again when his parents yet again needed someone to go through. It had been just over six months since he was on Water Earth but he jumped at the chance and again did not take no as an answer. He had even managed to negotiate it being a two month stay, getting approval from his parents and the governments from both sides of the Gateway to do so.

When he got there however, he was saddened to find Dredger missing. His room was empty and showed signs of not being used in months. When he could not get any information out of anyone regarding him, He was forced to turn to the one person he could think of to aid him even if it meant exposing his interactions with a Phin who was not approved.

“Thank you for seeing me Old Grey Manager." Alex said as he stood in the water before the Album who nodded.

“You peaked my interest at you request Hayworth Alexander Scott," he answered simply “Normally I do not interact with Humans, I am usually far too busy to deal with complaints but you said it wasn't one and more a request."

“Yes... when I was last here, six months ago, I stayed in the room of an Amplus named Damaged Dredger." he said simply trying to sound professional “I am aware that he was not permitted to interact with humans however we met by mere coincidence at the bar on my first nights stay. I enjoyed his company and he kept me entertained and out of the way of your staff over the three days I was here."

“I see, well I guess I will need to report him, this is a serious infraction." the Album reported and Alex cringed.

“No, please, sir, he was not the only guilty party, I continued to see him even though I knew the regulations. I am as much to blame as he is." he returned and gave a sigh “Look I'll get to my point, I had hoped to see him again yet he is not here. Do you know where he is?"

“I do, however you are not permitted access to his location." came the curt response “He did however leave a message with me in case someone came asking for him, I will assume you are the one he meant it for." he rummaged around before pulling it out. Despite the fact it was still sealed, Alex looked up at the Album suspiciously.

“Have you read this?" he enquired simply

“No Hayworth Alexander Scott, I am not into the habit of reading other peoples correspondences." he answered simply. Alex nodded and opened it before he started reading as fast as he could. It was badly written, either rushed or simply because Dredger does not know written English well or both.

'To Alex, you reading this means you have returned before me. It seems that more happened during our time together than we first believed. Something we did not believe possible. I have become pregnant and it is yours. I have been with no other since or before you so that be my only conclusion. I have told no one but have been sent to a clinic a long way away to have our calf. I will continue to be strong as you told me to for you and now our child. Love Damaged Dredger.'

“This... This is..." Alex started re-reading it. Old Grey Manager just kept a blank look on his face, examining the humans reaction “Old Grey Manager... it seems I have no choice now, I can't just ignore this... please... read." he handed over the pad and the Album read it quickly and quietly, eyes narrowing before he placed it down.

“A Skiff will pick you up in two hours to take you to his location. You will not be going alone, a staff member from the Unity Program will be going with you. You are to discuss this with no one other than those on the Skiff, am I understood? You are to remain here until the it arrives." the Album says before heading to the door “If you two are lucky, Hayworth Alexander Scott, the consequences from this will be minimal."

Alex waited patiently, reading and rereading the note Dredger had left him. He hoped that he hadn't just gotten both of them into stupid levels of trouble but he needed to do it. He couldn't let Dredger face this alone, he had helped get him into this mess so he would help him get through it. Regardless of what was coming he would be proud of one thing, he would be doing it with Dredger.

“Hayworth Alexander Scott," Old Grey Manager called re-entering the room “We are ready, head down to the docking bay and you will meet Mauve Eyed Porter, he will be going with you. Again discuss nothing with anyone other than him."

“Thank you Old Grey Manager, Thank you for helping." Alex said as he walked to the door.

“Do not thank me too soon. Depending how things go, you and Damaged Dredger may never meet again." was the simple reply and it chilled Alex to the core. He simply nodded and waded past him heading towards the docking bay.

“There you are Hayworth Alexander Scott," came the voice of an Album who was waiting next to the only Skiff in the bay “I was about to come looking for you."

“I apologise, I did get a little lost on the way." Alex lied, he had stopped by the window where he had first seen Dredger and reminisced before continuing on “I take it you are Mauve Eyed Porter?"

“That I am, please, inside we are behind schedule and have much to do and discuss." he answered and gestured to the Skiff, heading inside himself. Inside Alex found they were not alone, a team of about five other Phins, Longos and Album alike sitting and waiting for them.

“Please, sit Hayworth Alexander Scott," Mauve Eyed Porter instructed “These Phins are a team of Lawers and diplomatic representatives, they will be here to help discuss the situation and try to find a resolution." Alex remembered the first time he sat down with a business team and heard the term 'lawer'. He knew that Phins referred to Lawyers as law-ers because they had misunderstood the term the first time they'd heard it. In their minds, it had been just another verb followed by 'er' and it stuck. Since then, it had become more like a linguistic artefact that had remained and its use continued to this day.

“Before we start, please just call me Alex, or at the least Alexander Scott Hayworth." he told them as he took his seat.

“Very well, we do have several questions and we apologise for how personal they may appear but it is in you best interest to answer them truthfully and honestly." Mauve Eyed Porter said simply and Alex just nodded “How about you tell us what happened when you met with Damaged Dredger a little over six months ago."

Some time later Alex had recounted his entire tale. Of Dredger stumbling in drunk and Alex encouraging him to remain and what happened after that. From their sneaking into the Dive-Ball facility when no one was around to the sexual escapades they got up to in the privacy of their room. He hid nothing, especially details on their sexual activities. He didn't care if he was disturbing them or anything by telling them such details, he felt it needed to be told.

“I see," Mauve Eyed Porter said watching Alexander carefully “I have a few simple questions despite everything you have just told us. Did he ever force himself on you?"

“What!? No!" Alex vociferated “It was a mutual attraction that just... evolved into something neither of us expected. He did not force himself on me and I did not force myself on him."

“Calm down Alexander Scott Hayworth, I intended no insult," came the Albums placating reply “These are questions we must ask as part of procedure. You care a lot for Damaged Dredger, that much is clear, so the next question is: Do you wish to keep the child?"

“Yes, I do," Alex responded with very little pause or time for internal deliberation “I want them both. I never realised how badly I wanted Dredger till I was on Land Earth."

“Very well then, we have some documents for you to sign." Mauve Eyed Porter said gesturing to the other phins who brought over a small stack “Read them carefully, there are Non-disclosure agreements. News of a Phin getting pregnant from a human would cause problems on both sides of the Gateway. These will protect yourself, Dredger and your family's businesses from it all."

“If I don't sign one... what would happen?" Alex asks looking at the stack of pads.

“Worst case? You would be imprisoned on land earth and Black Listed from access to the Gateway. Dredger would also suffer the same fate here with the addition of the pregnancy being terminated." came the answer from one of the Longos Lawers. Alex paled a bit at the idea of the pregnancy being terminated and he simply nodded with a sigh and started reading.

“What is this one?" he asked getting to a different form after signing about ten.

“Ah, this one," Mauve Eyed Porter said looking “You and Dredger will be admitted to Station Zero until and proceeding the birth of the calf."

“Wait... Station Zero? That was going to be one of the reasons for my trip this time," Alex said slowly “But beyond the request for upgraded technology and items for repair I don't know anything about it..."

“It 'defies explanation', needless to say it is a centre for learning and interaction between Phins and Humans and..." Mauve Eyed Porter was cut off as one of the Lawers started talking to him in their own language. They never did explain the last 'and'.

“I do have one question of my own," Alex piped up some hours later drawing the attention of the others away from checking over the forms he had signed “After we have concluded at Station Zero, what will happen to us then?"

“So long as you maintain your silence, you will be permitted to continue to act as your parents envoy if you so desire. You will be given a quick course while at the facility however you can't possibly learn everything without going through the whole Unity Program." Mauve Eyed Porter told him.

“I was more meaning... I can not likely remain on Water Earth indefinitely, my family would not allow it but I will not leave Dredger and my child behind, not this time." Alex asserted “Will they permitted to go with me?"

“That depends on a few factors." The Album answered “In human-phin pregnancies involving a male human there is a fifty fifty chance they will either be a Phin or a male human. If the child is human, you will be permitted to go to Land Earth, although Dredger will need to remain in hiding. If it is a Phin, I am afraid that we cannot permit them to leave. However you are welcome to remain at Station Zero if you do not intend to leave them."

Alex nodded and remained quiet from then on mulling over his options. His parents would not accept him moving permanently to Water Earth however he would not leave Dredger now. Finally Alex was finding what and where he wanted to be in the world. If that picture did not involve Dredger and his child, he wouldn't accept it, his parents wishes be damned.

“We are here." Mauve Eyed Porter said as they started to dock at a rather large facility.
