“Megan, increase the amplitude of the myotone feed to 3.5."

Affirmative."

Robert blinked heavily to rest his eyes before he opened them anew and let the impossible landscape open in front of him once again. He saw what looked like an enormous green lake that was whipped by wind. Waves passed across it, rhythmically and steadily. His previous command appeared to make it happen faster.

He let out a satisfied 'hmmmm'.

“Take myotone feed energy down to 3.0."

“_ Affirmative." _

The ripples grew slower. Some of the waves began to come at irregular intervals as well.

“Shit," Rob grunted.

“_ I do not know that command." _

“Take myotone energy down to 2.5 and give me the electrolyte analysis on left eye display," he spoke rapidly.

“_ Affirmative." _

Some of the irregular waves persisted on his impossible, glowing landscape. Soon a whole row of red letters and numbers splashed over the left side of his field of vision.

“Right," Robert said to himself. “Add more potassium into the bath. Up...20 percent."

“_ Affirmative." _

The breeze flowing over the glowing sea seemed to become steady again.

“That's better. Megan, run the electrolyte analysis again. Let's see how this works."

“_ Affirmative." _

Robert couldn't spend any longer admiring the vista. His phone was ringing, and the icon bouncing on the right corner of his field of view was as insistent as the musical tones coming off nearby.

“Right...keep recording, Megan, and...answer phone."

“_ Affirmative." _

The little icon grew large enough to display the name “LEONARD MERCER" accompanied by a chime.

Finally!"

“I'm working...sir," the man replied to the insistent voice on the phone. The same voice made a harrumphing noise at the comment.

You're not at the office."

“No," Robert said. “I'm working at home today. I find it improves concentration sometimes."

Whatever you are doing there, you have to be on the 25th floor in one hour to present the BSP-021 to the Shanghai team."

Robert frowned uncomfortably.

“What?"

You heard that damn right, Foster!" _the voice growled. “_They need to see it in action or they won't be interested, and it's your project!

He wanted to huff, but kept it back. There was no point in pissing off the boss.

“It's all ready and waiting in my lab, sir," he added for good emphasis.

You were supposed to be here already!"

“Weren't they supposed to be coming tomorrow?"

Schedules change! They heard a rumor that some Canadians might be getting close to a patent and they need to throw their money at something before someone else manages to get the exclusive rights to the technology for the next fifteen years! Money doesn't wait, Foster!"

Of course it had to be about the money, he thought. It always was, especially when it came to Mercer.

“Sometimes science doesn't wait either, sir."

Get your ass over here and be ready to present BSP-021 to the investors or there might not be BSP-021 left to present, let alone fund!"

“Yes, sir," said Robert.

Good. I hope for your sake that everything is ready."

“It is ready," he replied. “I just need to be there. Forty-five minutes."

Be there on time!"

“I will be there," Robert said.

You better be. I have to be off to talk to the Chinese now. They are not very good with delays."

“Understood, sir."

One hour, Foster!"

The boss had enough of the call and closed to line after that. Robert let out the deep breath he had been practically holding. He couldn't fathom why the boss had managed to turn this relatively trivial matter into something to get into a hissy fit over. It was certainly characteristic of Mercer to behave in such a manner, but it didn't make it any easier to tolerate.

“Well, sounds like we are off, then," Robert spoke aloud now.

He flipped the VR headset up and blinked again when his eyes had to adjust to the light coming from the various computer displays and other equipment in the so-called home laboratory.

“Shit," he muttered.

“_ Command not recognized." _

“Terminate the experiment, Megan, file the data and freeze the samples for further analysis," he read out his orders.

“_ Affirmative." _

He turned about on his wheeled chair to face the incubator that held the petri dish on which the experiment resided. What he had perceived in glorious high definition in front of his eyes, big as the world, was located in a single drop of viscous fluid sitting near the center of the dish. Imaging and other equipment filled the rest of the cabinet that held his sample. With the experiment now interrupted, he would probably have to start again later. Maybe some of the data could be salvaged, he thought.

Robert stood up and stretched briefly. He would have to get dressed for the drive. He wasn't happy to leave all his work behind, but sometimes his boss was a real pain in the ass. He wasn't entirely faultless himself, perhaps.
