Darren’s Days Off

Part 5

For Taiko

By Draconicon

Darren felt a surge of relief when the hyper-sensitivity in his ears faded away. After dealing with the shrieks and whines that he had never heard or, at the very least, never noticed before, he couldn’t help but wonder how much of the world he had missed before. That had turned into an overstimulation from Hell the more that he listened, and the more that the audible world intruded on him. By the time that he went to bed that night, he was half-ready to schedule another doctor’s appointment with someone else.

Thankfully, by morning, the hyper-sensitivity had started easing, and by breakfast, it was more or less back to normal. Better than it had been, but no longer so overwhelming. Where that had come from, he didn’t know, but it was a relief that it had not stayed the way it had. There were some things better off going unheard.

Despite invitations from both Riche and his dad to stick around the house and work on the car, Darren declined. He wasn’t as mechanically inclined as either of them, and with such a limited time on vacation, he didn’t want to miss out on any time he had in Opal City. Spending the day repairing one of the clunkers didn’t really grab him, even if it meant time with his family, and he indulged in a rare moment of selfishness by deciding to go into town, instead, seeing what he could find.

There wasn’t much. Opal City had never been that bustling with activity, and despite the oncoming gentrification from all the upper-class people retiring to the town, there wasn’t that much more. Sure, there was a new fitness center, some boat rentals that were starting to operate on the lakefront, and a few other small, coffee-shop and café style businesses that were starting to open up that were more ‘upscale’ and catered to those with more disposable income, but there wasn’t that much to actually do if you weren’t already involved with the local life. If you weren’t in the know, if you didn’t have friends inviting you places, you didn’t know where you needed to go for good times.

Darren found himself wandering through the center of town, eventually making his way to the public park that wasn’t too far from the town square. He sat down on a bench at the outskirts, leaning forward with his elbows on his knees and his chin in his hands. Opal City felt so…strange, compared to how it used to.

When I was a kid…

He chuckled, shaking his head. It was like coming home to his childhood and feeling like nothing fit quite right. Nobody’s fault, really, but he’d gone off somewhere else, been someone else for so long. It wasn’t Opal City’s fault that he didn’t fit in here anymore. It was just the problem of growing up.

Still, it was a pity. He had a lot of memories of this place.

He looked over his shoulder at the park. The long green grounds spread out towards a small man-made pond, something that he remembered his grandfather and dad digging out together while his grandfather was still around. It had been one of the last big public ‘helps’ that the older man had done before he simply got too old to keep running around doing things for other people. Then again, he heard that his grandfather regularly drove the nurses at the retirement home crazy trying to keep doing things that he shouldn’t. He smiled despite himself, shaking his head once more.

Even as he stared at the pond, though, he felt a little tingle running up his spine, almost like the ghost of an old song that reminded him of a long-ago summer. He watched as a ghost of a memory played out, of a younger him and a T-Rex saurian of a similar age ran through the park. They couldn’t have been more than teenagers, maybe thirteen or fourteen, just out of junior high and running from their responsibilities as fast as they could.

It had been a weird day, all those years ago. Him and Kasey. Two friends, too inseparable buddies all that time ago. He watched, remembering that day, as they ran as fast as they could from the bus stop across the grass. It was a rare day when he had not wanted to go home, where he was overwhelmed from helping clean up a classroom after final period, where he felt like he just needed to be something else, someone else, anyone else. Kasey had ‘rescued’ him, pulling him out of the classroom before he could finish the cleaning out of guilt, all but throwing him on the last bus, and they spent the rest of the day together at the park.

It was a good memory. A good time, when someone else had helped save him from himself. He sighed, turning away, but the ghostly feeling running up his spine didn’t want to go away.

Click, click, click.

He blinked. That sound, too, was almost familiar. He turned towards the source of it, and saw –

“…No way…”

He stared at the T-Rex coming down the sidewalk. Though the pink high-lights that stained the scales around the corners of the eyes and exposed chest were new, that genial smile and blue-orange scale pattern could only be one person. After all, there weren’t that many scalies in Opal City, and there were fewer that fell into the saurian species. He slowly stood up, one hand on the bench as the T-Rex turned to see him, the other man stopping in his tracks.

“Darren?” the T-Rex asked.

“Kasey?”

“God damn…”

“Is that you?”

“Heh, probably not the me you expected, but yeah, it is. Man, what happened to you?” Kasey asked, walking over and looking him up and down. “When did you start hitting the gym so often?”

“It’s just part of the job. Stay fit, stay capable. When did you, uh…” He pointed at the corner of his eyes. “That paint, or?”

“Scale dye. And it’s a bitch, let me tell you.”

“How does that –”

“Man, you don’t want to know.” Kasey shook his head, his snout splitting into a grin that showed every single one of those massive fangs. “Man, when the hell did you get here? I haven’t seen you for, what, years?”

“Quite a few, yes.”

“God…I can’t believe it.”

“Me, neither.”

It had been a very long time since they parted. There had been times, here and there, when they had met up after graduating high school, but that had been as and when Darren could make his way down from Novus Ager, and when Kasey was free from his own job, and…well, it was one of those situations where it was far too easy to just let everything slide in favor of ‘doing it next time.’

This was next time. Three years later, next time.

Shaking his head in disbelief, Darren gestured back to the bench, and the two of them sat down. He noticed that Kasey had been going barefoot, the clicks that he was hearing the familiar sound of the long, curled toe-claws that had tapped the floor of their shared school again and again for so many years in the past. Kasey had never been great at keeping them trimmed, relying on the world to do that for him. The sheer number of times that he’d helped the T-Rex get them pulled back, properly shortened so that he wasn’t walking on tiptoe all the time, still baffled him.

They were painted now, he realized, pink as the stains around Kasey’s eyes and chest. He cocked his head to the side, looking back at his old friend.

“So, uh, something you want to explain, or…”

“Heh, right. You weren’t here for that.” Kasey shook his head. “Non-binary now.”

“Oh, you are? So, that means…they/them, right?”

“Right. Thanks.”

“Not a problem.”

“That’s right, you worked in the hotels, didn’t you?”

“Did, yeah. Not so much anymore. Got a, um, new employer.” He rubbed the back of his head, looking down and away. “A new kind of job. More of a, um, personal assistant.”

“…I get that.”

There was just enough of a different note in Kasey’s voice that Darren wondered if they got a little more than he was saying. Clearing his throat, he looked back at the town square, tapping his fingers together.

“So…still working at that pizza place?”

“More or less. Getting things done. Keeping the money coming in.”

“Seems a little dull for you.”

“It pays the bills.”

This time, it was Kasey’s turn to sound a little cagey. He looked sideways, but the T-Rex just shrugged.

“It’s a living.”

“…I can’t blame you there.” Darren sighed. “What a world, huh?”

“What a world.”

They both leaned back at the same time, and for a moment, Darren couldn’t help but be struck by the similarity to the past. It hadn’t been one of those friendships where they were always perfectly in sync with one another, but they’d shared more than one moment where they just leaned back and groaned at the weirdness of the world at the same time, or when they both groaned at the stupidity of someone else, or where they both got the same, steely-eyed determined look to get something done.

It had been rare, but when it happened, they were always together on it. This was just one of those times.

“Funny that you showed up when you did,” Darren muttered.

“Hmm?”

“I was just thinking. Remembering that day, way back in junior high. Do you remember?”

“…That day where we made that promise?”

“Yeah. To bigger and better things. To go on and do our best. To reach whatever heights we could.”

“And make things good.”

“For both of us.” Darren smiled slightly. “I think that I’ve done good enough by myself to help a bit there. If you need it, I mean.”

“Heh, I’m surviving.”

“Do you want a vacation? I have more than enough squirreled away that I can give you a gift.”

“Tempting, but I’ll pass. I like it here.”

Darren couldn’t quite help cocking an eyebrow at that. Kasey had always been one of the more driven men that he had known growing up, and the pair of them had always had one thought or another about how they could move forward. Not always with the same base desires – he had always wanted to go about things the way that his family did, helping others, while Kasey wanted to go forward and fix things – but always with the same end result: ambition to be better. Hearing that Kasey just wanted to stay here…

That was different. Something had definitely changed since the last time that they had seen each other.

Kasey seemed to realize that there was something off, too, because they started to shift on the bench. The T-Rex sighed.

“I should get going. I got a shift later, and –”

“How much later?”

“Hmm?”

“How much later? Tonight, or morning shift?”

“Um, morning. Why?”

“Why don’t you come around for dinner tonight?” Darren smiled. “My dad’s doing a barbecue, and it’s been forever since we’ve spent time together. Might be nice to actually enjoy each other that way.”

“…I don’t know, Darren. I don’t know if your dad will want me around right now.”

“Why?”

“Let’s just say that we’ve had some disagreements lately.”

“You and my dad? About what?”

“Let’s just leave it, okay? It’s between me and him, and I don’t want to spoil your trip.”

“You’d spoil it more if you stayed away.” He winced almost as soon as he said it, shaking his head and taking their hand, giving it a squeeze. “Sorry, but...It’s been a long time, Kasey. Please?”

“…Heh. Alright. Just for tonight, though.”

“It’ll be great.”

#

Well, fuck.

Kasey sat in his folded lawn chair as Lloyd continued extolling the virtues of his younger son. The smell of the roasting meat on the grill was great, as it always was at the Huff house, but that didn’t mean that the air was clear. They kept shuffling back and forth, trying to get comfortable in the too-small chair while the human father kept talking about how much his son had accomplished.

“Yeah, you see? Darren’s been making a real name for himself out there. Not just in Novus Ager, either, but all the way out in some exotic city somewhere. What’s it called again, son?” Lloyd asked.

“…Kusan City,” Darren muttered, their friend looking like he was trying to shrink in on himself, too.

“Right, right, Kusan City. See that, Kasey? That’s what it means to be driven. You get stuff done. You don’t just give up and settle for something like a delivery driver job.”

The T-Rex refused to rise to the bait, though they crossed their arms a bit tighter around their chest. They were all too aware of how it could make them look like they were pouting, but it was hard to look any different at that moment. It was a long-standing argument between themselves and Lloyd, and it was only getting worse with Darren around.

This is exactly what I was afraid of, they thought. All this time, he’s been going on about Darren in little comments, little things, but…fuck…

It was so much worse with Darren actually there. It was like the older human couldn’t help but brag about everything that Darren had done while away. The friendship that they had shared with the other human had always been something that Lloyd had fostered in the past, but ever since Kasey had started doing something that Lloyd considered ‘less,’ things had started breaking down.

For a while, Kasey had done their best to try and consider it as the older human’s way of trying to motivate them to do better, to be better, but…well. Lloyd didn’t understand.

The beefy father turned from the grill, using the tongs to point at Darren again.

“Look, Kasey, I’m just saying. It’s better for everyone when people live up to their potential. Darren’s been amazing to us. I can’t say how proud I am of him, but you…”

“Dad, come on,” Darren said.

“No, no, it’s not hurting them.”

“Dad, let’s talk about something besides my job.”

“Just saying, it’s a good thing that you’ve done. Maybe Kasey should use that as motivation to find something for themselves.”

They squeezed themselves a little bit tighter at that. Motivation to find something? They had something. The Huff patriarch might not get it, but they had something.

The air hummed softly as they squeezed themselves a little tighter, and Kasey shook their head, trying to keep from saying something that they’d regret. The hiss of the meat turning on the grill mixed with the sound of four people breathing, the chat dying for a moment as the sound of existence just filled the air. That…

And other things.

They looked at Darren again. Their friend sat with his shirt pulled tight to his chest. A dark-colored one, too, something to hide the mark that the T-Rex had just barely made out at the park and decided not to ask about. Something that Darren was trying to hide from his father. There were other things, too, things that added to the hum in the air that Kasey heard all the time. Little twinges, little plucks at chords that echoed around them.

“Look.”

Don’t start.

“I’m just saying.”

Please, please, don’t say anything.

“Darren’s done well for himself. I remember how damn good you were in school, Kasey, so I don’t get it. Why the hell are you settling for this dead-end, nothing job when you could be so much –”

You said it.

Kasey stood up without a sound, claws all but ripping through the Huff family lawn as they stomped over to Lloyd. They grabbed for the man’s chest, and they pulled. It was the only way that they could think of to describe it, but they pulled at the ‘string’ that they could feel, the thing that had been humming from the older man.

Riche stood up where he had been fiddling with the other, older grill the family had, but Kasey had already turned to face the older son. Once more, they reached out, pulled –

Twang.

The sound was louder this time as they pulled the string, realizing where some of the noise had been coming from. This time, a deeper, throbbing sound, almost like a bass guitar, filled their ears, and the air shimmered, the ghost of a lion and the beeping of a machine and more filling the air like ghosts.

They turned to Darren, who was also on his feet, who also looked shocked. Kasey shook their head, reached out and pressed their hand against their friend. They felt many more ‘strings’ this time, some old, some new, and all thrumming beneath their fingers. Strings that had been laid, strings that needed to be –

“Kasey, what are you –”

Plucked.

Twang.

Twang.

Twang.

As Kasey dragged their hand back from Darren’s chest, one manifestation after another followed the humming sounds of twists in reality. The blank spaces, the voids, the covered-over patches that had been layered over Darren again and again and again; that was what the T-Rex touched and what they pulled open. Riche had been barely affected by the most recent of them, Lloyd only affected by the twist of reality that was starting to settle over Opal City with all the changes to their little town, but Darren –

Twang.

Twang.

Twang.

The more that Kasey pulled their hand back, the more ‘strings’ caught their fingers, and the more twangs filled the air, each one summoning a new ghostly manifestation of what had happened. Perverted snakes, debauched doctors, a shimmer-eyed feline, and more, an orc with a bejeweled beard and a pair of eager mammals that had dragged the human off time and again.

They kept coming, and as they did, Kasey lifted their other hand. The loose ‘strings’ gathered around their fingers, and they delivered the ghosts to their destinations like an expert puppeteer. The muscular orc combined with the perverted pair, and were sent to Lloyd. Others were sent to Riche. Still others floated around, half-disintegrating, save for the hypnotic feline that had come free. That one refused to fade.

Too strong, too present for Darren to get away from…

So, Kasey pushed it back in, but used it for the moment, creating a little space. A bubble of new reality, a bubble…

A bubble of safety…

#

Kasey settled back on the hammock with Darren, the backyard of the Huff family different than it had been. A little bigger, a little greener. Riche was at the grill now rather than Lloyd, dressed in a backless apron that showed off his ass as he turned the meat. The older brother turned around, smiling.

“Heh, was wondering how long it’d take Darren to pop the question. Then again, my brother’s never been that good at being direct.”

“Mmmph. Hush,” Darren muttered, cuddled up under Kasey’s arm. “At least they said yes.”

“Hey, let’s celebrate, boys!” Lloyd said, the older man coming back out of the house, carrying a box of cigars under his arm. “Good times for all. Good fucking times.”

Of course, it was rather silly to see him like that now. The patriarch of the family had been completely stripped during Kasey’s ministrations, showing off his whole body at that moment. A fairly well-endowed man, Lloyd was, and it was rather fun to look at him right then.

Even if they were ‘promised’ to Darren in this temporary bubble, that was. They looked down at the naked man in their embrace, rubbing his side, smiling slightly even as that dark footprint on Darren’s chest stood out all the stronger.

If only you knew…

Kasey shook their head. It was too late to change things, now. The mark had been imprinted deeper than skin level. They’d known that when they arrived at the park, following that distorted ‘tune’ that had been rippling through Opal City. The whole place had been discordant for a while, not quite right with itself, but the new jangle of different contrasting and conflicting sounds had drawn them to the park. Their own ‘tune’ had gone down, and when they’d seen Darren on the bench, they’d seen the same memories that Darren had been experiencing. That same day, all that time ago.

That day of the promise.

If only you knew…

The T-Rex had come into this ability a few years back. The job that would have only been temporary, something to build up funds before moving out of Opal City, had become more and more permanent the longer that they experimented with these ‘strings.’ The more that they played with the reality tune, the more that they understood that there was something else, something bigger to be touched on. There was no need to go further than they had; there was something that was deeper, if not bigger, to be understood with this.

They hadn’t been bothered by that. They had been more than willing to just indulge, to play with the new understanding that they’d been given. If the promise that they had made twinged at them from time to time, then that was part of the price to be paid, right?

Then Darren came back, and they remembered. They remembered why they had made the promise in the first place.

As Riche went back to turning the meat, swaying his ass back and forth as Lloyd celebrated as only a well-muscled himbo of a man could, Kasey sighed. Even as they leaned back, even as they dragged their hand down Darren’s back and felt the human leaning against them, as intimately as they could have ever imagined, they couldn’t help but feel wrong. There was an ever-so-slight discord to the tune that they had created with the re-weaving of the different strings. Even here, in this little temporary bubble of reality, they could feel how this was going off.

I can’t have this.

They looked down at Darren. Lifting his head with a finger, they looked right into the human’s eyes.

“I miss you,” they whispered.

“…”

“I miss you. I’ve missed you more than I wanted to admit…and I wish I could keep that promise that we made. But…I can’t. I can’t leave. I can’t…I can’t be with you out there.” They shook their head. “And I wish…I wish you could come back, to be with me.”

It was a hard thing to admit, even in a place where it would be more than likely that Darren would remember nothing. There was so much that would change after this, so much that Darren would have to deal with. By disentangling all those ‘strings’, it had basically ensured that the blank spaces in the human’s memory would have to be dealt with. They’d have to be looked at, admitted, examined. Their old friend wouldn’t be able to ignore them anymore, and whatever they were hiding would probably come to light, eventually.

That was what Kasey did. They undid the bits of twisted reality, the little lies that were left around. They disentangled things so that the world ran better. If only they could disentangle their own mind.

“I wish you could love me…”

They leaned their head down, closing their eyes for a moment. They almost missed what happened next, as Darren leaned forward and kissed them.

“What…”

“Maybe this won’t last...maybe it’s not meant to be…but that doesn’t mean I can’t give you a little love now…”

The human’s response left them in shock, particularly as his lips gradually traced down the T-Rex’s body, stopping just over their waist, pausing just long enough to pull Kasey’s shorts out of the way to kiss them at the base of their shaft.

…If he wants this…

Again, it was very unlikely that Darren would remember anything that happened in this bubble of time, but that didn’t mean that this wasn’t real. On the contrary, this was probably the most real experience, the most willing one, that the human had had in some time. Kasey slowly stood up, pulling their shorts down the rest of the way, and threw them over their shoulder as they pulled Darren up with their other hand.

“Come on…”

Whistling for Lloyd to follow them – and taking a cigar of their own – Kasey went into the house. Not to Darren’s bedroom, not up to the little place at the very top of the house, but to the master bedroom. The place had a slight scent of Lloyd to it, but no others. Maybe Lloyd and his wife were always away, maybe they didn’t feel comfortable fucking around their family, or maybe it was something else, but that streak was about to end.

They laid down on the bed, spreading their legs to give Darren space to crawl in. Lloyd was left at the doorway, made to watch. It was cruel, in some ways, but the T-Rex no longer cared that much about Lloyd’s welfare in this. After all the nitpicking, after all the attempts that they had made to be good about it only to be disrespected, Kasey felt that it was time for some payback. Lloyd wouldn’t remember this either, but it was fun to make the father watch as the son did some pleasurable work.

They reached down between their legs, holding their cock by the base as Darren crawled close. Swaying it from side to side with one hand, they held out their cigar with the other. Lloyd reached over with a light, setting it to burning at one end before Kasey took a long suck of it, pulling it down into their lungs and enjoying the flavor. It was a thick, heavy sort of drag, and it would leave quite a stink in the room.

But they didn’t really care. It was one last middle-finger towards Lloyd for this, and one that would last.

“You sure about this?” Kasey asked.

“I am.”

“Heh…then go on.”

Seeing the human’s mouth go wide, seeing how very wide his mouth opened to take just the head of the T-Rex’s cock, was more than a little arousing. They had started going stiff the minute that Darren had kissed them, and it had only continued the more that the human seemed willing to take this step with them. They groaned under their breath, rolling their hips slowly to feed the dark-skinned man a little more of their cock, feeling the softness of those lips fading into the heat of a wet, willing mouth.

“Mmmph…”

A slow thrust, something that pushed their cock to the back of Darren’s mouth, but no further. The human’s hands had already gone down to their balls, already started rolling them around, teasing them and keeping them churning, rolling, filling up. Kasey growled softly, resting one hand on the back of Darren’s head, the other pulling the cigar from their mouth. They puffed in Lloyd’s direction, giving the patriarch a little taste. There was no reaction; the bubble probably kept the human from being as annoyed by it as he would normally be.

Later, though…

Kasey almost wished that they could be around for that, but the bubble would only last through the night, and they’d need to be off early in the morning. Early enough that –

“Mmmph…”

Darren bobbed forward, taking more of their cock in that moment, pulling it all the way back into their throat this time. The thick head was probably giving the human some small difficulties, but if it was, he wasn’t letting them slow him down. Up, down, up, down, slow sucks, slow licks right over the head before descending down again. Darren’s hands pressed against their thighs, keeping their legs wide open as they went for it, sucking, licking, almost nuzzling into their crotch to get as much of their cock as the human cock.

Kasey was amazed that Darren could take it so well, and wondered just what that last mark had been. It was the one bit of discord that had hung around, the one thing that had been changed for Darren that didn’t want to fade. They didn’t know what that meant, but they knew that it was there to stay. Maybe it was just the way that Darren would be from now on, belonging to that –

“Mmmph…fuck…”

Sucking harder on the cigar, they pushed their hips forward, pulling Darren down to the base of their shaft. The human didn’t hesitate, didn’t hold back. If anything, he seemed to thrust his face forward at the same time that Kasey pushed at his mouth. The feeling of that wet, clenching throat around their shaft was giving them all the pleasure they needed to feel orgasm coming quickly. Another time, they would have wanted to hold back, but this was their place, their little bubble of time.

They could go as many times as they liked.

So, they buried their cock down Darren’s throat, their balls rising before their first orgasm hit them, hard. They came, squirting their load down their friend’s throat, filling him, soaking him with their seed. The T-Rex held Darren in place for nearly a minute, enjoying the clenching, the swallowing, the slow-breathing that dragged little puffs of air around their cock. All of it was just…perfect.

Slowly panting, they pushed the human back. Darren leaned backwards as his lips popped off the head, showing a faint mouthful of cum before swallowing it down. Kasey growled deep in his throat at the playful show, shaking his head.

“Darren…do you want to take it further?”

“Of course.”

“Then…turn around…and get on all fours.”

The human was all too eager for it, it seemed. Darren turned, not fazed in the slightest by looking back at his own father, and turned his ass towards the T-Rex. The sight of their friend, their crush, spreading his ass cheeks for them was just what they needed to stay hard.
