The Search is Over-Chapter 5
A glimpse of the past.
Several Years Ago, 2017
I was on the little stage, doing teachings to a bunch of hatchlings in front of me. I raised one finger and said, "Just remember what I just said about how the humans changed over the years." I lowered my hand and went on, "They may have looked evil back then, but the truth is, they have changed. Humans are capable of change. There really are no dragon slayers and there are no animosities between the humans and the dragons, understand?"
Several hatchling nodded and several of them have simply said, "Yes."
I grinned at them, "Good, now....Any questions for today?"
One hatchling whose scales are colored green, raised his paw and asked, "I forgot to ask, why did the humans fight in...World War Two?" Then the little guy cocked his head.
I giggled after he asked and I playfully looked at him, "Sounds like you've slept through one of my lessons yesterday. I'm not surprised. But I can tell you a little bit of it again, and then we'll continue on with the history tomorrow, alright?"
The hatchling asked again, "So why did your kind fight during World War two?"
I answered, "Well you see....The war started because of a human named Adolf Hitler. He's the most nastiest human of all time, in my opinion. He's basically a...Dictator to the country of Germany. And lets just say he wanted more power and...Well he started the war in Poland, which it started the holocaust. And there were also the Japanese, who attacked the Americans in Pearl Harbor in 1941. And that's how the Americans got involved. It's complicated, but us humans know about this history."
I glanced at all of them and asked, "Now, do all of you think it's good to start a war?" The hatchlings shook their heads. I nodded, "That's good, because starting a war is NOT great at all. Why? Because there's a lot of death and a lot of blood in war. And I'm sure that you don't like the sound of that."
The hatchlings shook their heads again and I nodded, "Thank you everyone. I'm glad that my teachings are making you learn a lot of things. That's why me and my friend Ms. Amanda made this place. To teach all of you about how humans have changed and there's no need to fight them. I know everyone doesn't enjoy fighting the humans, but back then, you never had a choice. But you also didn't know them, because you only judged them by their appearance."
Another hatchling who is a little female with red scales asked, "But didn't the humans judge my parents and others dragons by their appearance?"
I gestured to the little hatchling, "Oh, yes." Even though I have told them that before, but I didn't mind repeating the answer. After all, they're kids. I said, "At least know, there's no need for all of us to judge each other, but to embrace each other. Because we all know there's no point in fighting and there's no point for ending everything in bloodshed."
Another hatchling, who is a male with black scales hollered, "Yeah! Like the mean old mayor who wanted to fight the humans to the death!" The hatchling crouched low to the ground and bared its fangs, "Grrr. He's bad."
I laughed. I knew who he was talking about. He was talking about the former mayor of the dragon city. That crazy ass mayor who wanted to start a war between my kind and his, because he was mad with revenge. I'm still glad that he's gone. And...I'm glad that Sierra didn't die because of him.
Well I'm just glad that me and Amanda didn't die because of him. That's really a good thing.
And another good thing, is that the mayor's son took his place as the new mayor. And he's really doing a good job. He's better than his father.
I saw that several big dragons who are their mothers and fathers, came into the classroom and I hollered at all the hatchlings, "Alright everyone, classes are dismissed. we'll continue on with the lesson on World War two later!"
The hatchling all cheered and they all ran to their parents. The parents all nuzzled them, even their mothers, who basically cooed them. I smiled at the scene. Well that's another lesson for today. I sighed.
One mother dragon whose scales are pink came up to me and smiled down at me, "You know Mr. Wayne."
I waved her off while looking up at her, "Call me Wayne."
She nodded, "I'm still happy that you are taking the time for doing teaching my hatchlings about your ways of life now. You and Amanda. I...I never knew you'd change. I certainly remember how the humans looked back then when I was a hatchling."
I nodded, "Yeah well, I didn't like the way my kind was like. I didn't like that we all just feuded and fought. No one never got to know each other."
She lowered her head to my level, "Well I've misjudged your kind for years. And you know...I should thank you so much that your kind has changed." Then she stretched her neck to my nuzzle my chest.
I patted the top of her head and said, "You're welcome."
The female dragon raised her head and said, "Thank you human, for not letting my hatchlings live the life like I did. I...Want what's best for them." Then she whirled around and padded off with her hatchlings.
I smiled after all that happened. That's not the first time that happened. Several other parents were proud that me and Amanda were doing this. Teaching them our new ways of life now.
I really feel sorry for the parents who went through all those horrible times when they were hatchlings. I could imagine it's...Bad.
But they're not judging my kind anymore, and it's all because of me and Sierra. Well not just me and Sierra. Neal, Cody, and Amanda all had a thing to do with it as well.
I can never forget that night, the night when Sierra was dying and we all took her to one of the human towns to help save her life. And that night, when the humans finally knew that dragons really do exist in modern times and they've embraced them, despite how different they looked. Especially Sierra, Neal, and Cody. That the whole world embraced dragons for who they are, not what they are. That my kind is not hostile to them.
And that was seven years ago and the humans are still embracing them.
I'll never forget that night when it all started. Not as long as I live.
I was still alone in the classroom and then I heard someone enter the room. I looked and saw to my happiness that a tall blue dragoness came in here. I smiled at her.
Sierra.
She grinned at me, "Hello Wayne."
I walked up to her and she lowered her head to my level, "Hey there, OLD LADY."
She rolled her eyes, "You know something Wayne? You really do make me old just listening to you call me that."
I giggled, "Oh really? Make you feel old just like Joanna?"
She narrowed her eyes at me, "Not that old, you little shit." Then we both laughed at that.
After we were done laughing, we stared at each others eyes. Then I leaned forward to kiss her nose, and I pulled back. I said to her, "You look beautiful today."
Sierra looked at herself and frowned, "I don't look different today."
I nodded slowly, "I know."
Sierra knew what I was getting at, and she smiled at me, "Thank you." Then she asked, "So how was classes today?"
I nodded and said, "They were great, the hatchlings were on their best behavior as usual today."
Sierra said, "That's good. So where's my adopted daughter? She had a day off from teaching today? I wanted to say hello to her today."
I nodded, "Yeah, Amanda wanted to spend the whole day with Neal today, since it's his day off from being an officer today as well."
Her face went wide and she gave me a devious grin, "Well what do you know, they seemed to have their quality time together again." Then she added with a playful glare, "But Neal better be careful with her, he might hurt her with his frame."
I laughed hard at that, "Oh god Sierra, you crack me up."
She shot up head and grinned smugly, "I have my moments."
I shook my head and sighed, "I guess that's another reason why I like being with you."
She got her head close to mine, and said to me in a whisper, "I know that for a fact." Then I placed both hands to her face and kissed her directly on the mouth, she kissed me back. Since there are no hatchlings watching us.
We pulled away from our kiss and then I heard her stomach rumbling. Sierra's eyes went wide and I laughed. I said, "I think that was your stomach."
She smiled, "Then I need to eat." She licked her chops, "And I'm looking at food right here."
I playfully slapped her cheek, but it wasn't hard, "You know you can't eat me, old lady. Humans are not food."
Sierra rose her head and laughed, "Oh, I know that!" She giggled some more, "Besides that, we never eat humans anyways. They would probably taste gross."
I playfully raised my eyebrows at her, "Good, cause if you eat me, I'll pound your stomach from the inside."
She groaned and then she moved her front paw to where her stomach's at and she rubbed it, "Ancestors, I can just imagine the stomach pains." She removed her paw of her stomach and sighed, "Well I know for certain that I won't eat you after all." Then she grinned, "You're too cute to eat."
I nodded and said, "Damn right, I'm cute." She lowered her head to mine and gave it a lick. I tenderly caressed her cheek and said to her, "Come on, lets go to the Braveheart. I'm hungry too." Then I added, "Plus me and the guys are going to sing tonight there too."
She nodded, "Sounds good to me. I could use a good meal. And also a good song from my mate." She whirled around, her tail almost hitting me. I ducked beneath it and she looked over her shoulder and apologized, "Oh, sorry Wayne. I need to really mind the tail."
I stood straight and waved her off, "I'm the one who should mind it, big girl."
Sierra smirked after I said that, "Oh yeah, YOU should always mind the tail."
I shook a fist at her, "Don't push it, old lady."
She shot a glare at me, "I'm not old." Before I could say anything she raised a claw, "And yes, I know that you'll say that I've lived for a long time, so don't remind me you little bastard."
I shrugged my arms, "I won't and for the record, you're still a beautiful old lady."
She smiled at me, "Thank you, Wayne. And I already knew that." Then her stomach growled again. She started walking in fast strides after that, "Alright, lets go now before I EAT someone!"
I laughed and jogged after her.
*****
Me and Sierra walked to the Braveheart about an hour after we left the classroom. Still the afternoon, only several hours away for the performance to start at the restaurant. We were walking side by side. Sierra looked down at me as she walked and said, "By the way, sorry that you didn't say good morning to me before you left to teach today. I just couldn't sleep last night."
I said to her as we walked, "Oh you don't have to be sorry."
Sierra groaned and shook her head, "I mean, I keep tossing and turning in the furs lately, and I can't get enough sleep." She sighed, "I think I should get some new furs. They're probably losing their comfort."
I shrugged my arm and said, "I don't know what to tell you. I always found comfort in those furs."
Sierra sighed, "Well maybe it's just me. I just can't seem to get comfortable in them."
I said, "Well maybe we should just wash them. I don't think we haven't washed them for a while." I nodded, "After all, cleanliness always makes them soft."
She snorted, "Well they better get back to being soft, or I'm going to throw them away."
I shook my head, "Well maybe YOU should always remember to wash them every once in a while."
She shot a glare at me, "I should wash them? You're my minion, so you should be the one to do it."
I laughed and placed a hand to my forehead, "Again calling me a minion? Really?"
She grinned, "Why not? Once a minion, always a minion."
I removed my hand off my forehead and crossed my arms. I playfully glared at her, "I'm not a minion, you big blue bitch."
She laughed, "I'm always happy being a bitch. Considering that I have a minion working for me. Might as well give out orders to you."
I shook a finger at her, "Call me that again, and I'll kick your ass."
Sierra added, "Alright fine, then I'll get myself a new minion. You're being the defiant little ass. I'm sure the new minion will be more cooperative." We both laughed.
I placed my hand on her body as we still strode, "I'll wash the furs tonight, I promise."
Sierra shook her head as she saw me place a hand on her, "No, I'll clean them up. I'm always making them smell bad. Probably because of my big stature."
I pulled my hand off of her and smiled at her, "We'll do it together, ok?"
She looked ahead and said, "Sounds good to me, minion."
I shouted at her, "Quit calling me minion!" She laughed after my outburst.
We both continued to walk to the Braveheart, and I looked at her as we walked. Seven years, seven years since we've been together. And even up to this day, I'm still happy that we are.
I could remember the first time that we've met. At the cave that was near my house in the woods. And both of us never thought that our first meeting would change both our lives. Until everything happened.
After she brought me here to the dragon city against my own free will, we sorta became enemies. But then she saved my life from a pack of wolves and what happened afterwards, we became friends, then to best friends. Then to something more than that.
I could even remember that night when she first confessed her love to me, and I thought I wasn't good enough for her. Plus, I thought we were too different for each other. But...We weren't.
And I'm still glad we've got together. We were meant to find each other. She's the best person I've ever known. She's really sweet and kind. Not to mention beautiful with those blue scales of hers.
We walked, until we could see the restaurant up ahead. At the entrance, we could see Cody, Amanda, and Neal on their way there now.
I waved at them as me and Sierra strode to them, "Hey guys!"
Cody, the short green dragon bounded to us and said, "There you two are! We were just going to eat without you!"
Amanda, a human female about my age with long brunette hair, said with a grin, "Yeah and NEAL here, was going to eat your food if you didn't show up."
Neal, the tall red dragon about the same size as Sierra looked down at Amanda and he hissed at her, "I was not, you little liar!"
Amanda turned her head to look at him and she put her hands to her hips, "Yes you were! You said to me and Cody here that if Wayne and Sierra didn't come here to eat, you're going to eat their food!"
Neal whined, "But I like to eat here! The food here always smells good!" Then his tongue was hanging off his maw and said, "My mouth's watering just thinking about it!"
Sierra glared at him, "I know that we're best friends and we always will be, but you really need to learn not to be such a..." She trailed off and looked down at me for an answer, "What'd you call it, Wayne?"
I giggled and whispered to her, "A pig."
Sierra beamed and nodded, "Yes! Pig!" She looked at Neal and said to him, "Neal, quit being a pig!"
Amanda started laughing hysterically and Neal just growled at both Amanda and Sierra, "Ladies, I'M NOT A DAMN PIG!"
Amanda made pig noises, "Oink, oink."
Neal glared down at her, "Shut up."
Then she glared right back, "Tread lightly, you big red scaly pervert. Or I'll kick you in the eggs for telling me to shut up."
Neal gulped and he curled his tail to protect the spot between his legs, "I want to protect my eggs." Then he added, "And here I thought you loved me."
Amanda's glare melted away and she nodded, "Oh I do, but sometimes you really annoy me." She winked at him, "In a good way."
Neal grinned at her, "I knew you loved me." He lowered his head to her level and he nuzzled her lovingly. Amanda caressed his cheek and chin with both of her hands.
Me, Cody and Sierra are all smiling at them. Even up to this day, I'm glad that they're together as well.
Amanda never had a boyfriend before in her life, not before and after her mother died because of...Her father. Not to mention Neal's mate died before me and Amanda were born and that was a long time ago.
But they've found each other, just like me and Sierra found each other.
I looked at Cody, he didn't notice me looking at him, as he was staring at Neal and Amanda gazing at each other.
Cody...
Cody was and always will be a pal. And he was a real chap when we first met.
My first day in the dragon city, seven years ago and I made my first friend here. And it was Cody.
Cody always reminded me of my human friend from school and he still does. We're even just like brothers. A brother we both never had.
I stared at his frame and I frowned. He seems to be getting bigger than usual. He seems a bit taller than me. The height of his head is not near my shoulders anymore. He has been taller lately.
I guess he's starting to grow into a full adult, just like Sierra and Neal.
Soon he's not going to be a little green runt anymore.
And oh boy, his mate would find him more handsomer than before, I could imagine it.
And speaking of his mate, there's Eleanor strutting towards us. The purple dragoness that's about the same size as him. He met her seven years ago, days after me and Cody first met. I smiled at her.
About two years after she and Cody have been dating, I named her Eleanor. I named her after my aunt. I thought it would be a perfect human name for her and plus I'm tired of just calling her purple dragoness. I needed to communicate with her.
Eleanor came up to Cody and she nipped at his neck. He yelped and looked at her. She giggled, "Sorry about that. I just wanted to get your attention."
Cody grinned and he said lovingly to her, "You have my attention." Then they both nipped at each other and they nuzzled.
Neal raised his head off of Amanda's level and said to all of us, "Well since all this is done and over with. Lets go get something to eat!"
I raised a finger and said to Cody and Neal, "Right, and lets not forget, we have a performance tonight." I winked at them.
Cody pulled away from Eleanor and nodded, "Yep, I remember."
Neal grinned down at me and shook his head, "I wouldn't forget it either. I love singing with you two!"
Cody looked up at Neal and closed his eyes and said smugly, "Good! That means I'm not bad at singing then!"
All of us laughed and I beckoned all of them to follow, "Come on, guys."
*****
Joanna, the old magenta dragoness, who is the waitress and the owner of the Braveheart smiled at all of us, "Well I hope you guys enjoy your food! I always do try to have my employee make the best food as possible."
I nodded and smiled at her, "Thank you, Joanna."
She nodded and whirled around to let us eat. She's attending to another customer.
I still smiled at her. Joanna...
I remember she became my second dragon friend, after Sierra brought me here to this city. She always did call me hon, when she sees me. Always treating me like I'm here son. A hatchling she never had.
And she became like a mother to me, just like my other mother figure. The human I named her after. Joanna Stanton.
I gripped the crystal pendant on my neck. The pendant that used to belong to Sierra's late human boyfriend from back in the days when the knights and castles existed, Eric that was his name. I know that Joanna's watching me, along with Eric and Sierra's family.
I know that Sierra still thinks about Eric every once in a while, but she would always be happy with me. And she pretty much is.
I could see in a distance that Sierra's uncle, who has blue scales just like his niece became mates with Joanna the dragoness, is strutting toward her. I saw him giving Joanna lick on her snout. They have been together since seven years ago. A few months after my kind have accepted the dragons as friends. Joanna even have him as co owner of the restaurant. I'm really happy for them.
I looked around the booths nearby and saw that a few humans are in the dragon city as well. I still can't believe that even when some dragons visit that human town that those dragons would bring along the humans they see.
Not too many humans come here, but I have seen about thirty here in this time of the year. Because not a lot of humans want to travel this far from their home. But hey, at least the humans who travel here would enjoy the sights here.
Neal's voice interrupted my thoughts, "Hey, you gonna eat that?"
I looked at Neal and frowned quizzically at him, "....Yes."
Neal sighed as he sat with Amanda, Cody, and Eleanor, "Damn it all! I never get to have my fill, just because of this little piece of meat I have here!" His tail trashed behind him, but it only just hit the air.
Amanda shot a glare at him, "Watch your tail! You're going to hit someone!"
Neal had an apologetic look, "Sorry."
Sierra giggled at him, "Well if you don't like eating that small piece of meat, then order a bigger piece then!"
Neal sighed again as he stared at his food, "Yeah I could've, but that meat always has those spices that'll make me sneeze. I don't like the bigger piece."
Sierra shrugged her shoulders and lowered her head to eat her food, "Your loss then, old friend."
Neal groaned, "Show off."
Sierra glared up at him as she ate. Then I laughed.
Amanda looked up at him and asked, "Well can you at least buy that meat for me? I would love it."
Neal glanced down at her and smiled, "Of course, my darling!" Both of them laughed.
Sierra raised her head off her food and looked at Cody, "Dang young dragon, you seem to be getting a bit taller now." She smirked at him, "I think you're growing to be big and strong now."
Cody puffed out his chest and held his head up proudly, "A proud strong dragon, as I would grow up to be!" Eleanor nuzzled his shoulder and he nuzzled her back.
Sierra grinned deviously at Eleanor, "Hey you, young dragoness." Eleanor looked at Sierra and she went on, "Just to warn you, be careful with Cody here. Once he gets bigger, he'll be a show off just like Neal."
Both Neal and Cody shot glares at her and Eleanor said loudly, "Got it!"
Then Neal and Cody both groaned and Cody muttered, "Damn it."
*****
The night of the performance finally came at the Braveheart and several dragons have come here to watch me, Cody, and Neal sing for tonight.
All three of us are on stage right now, after Joanna made the announcement. All three of us are waiting for my mind to start the performance. In the distance in the crowd upon the dragons, I could see Sierra, Amanda, and Eleanor waving at us. I waved back at them. Cody and Neal waved too at them. In the crowd I could see some humans in the crowd too.
Joanna stood nearby with Sierra's uncle, both of them sitting on their haunches. And also in the crowd, I could see the former mayor's son, who became the mayor in his place standing in the crowd too. I could never forget those red scales on him.
I looked at both Neal and Cody, as I stood between them on stage. Cody is on my left, and Neal is to my right. I could remember the first night I performed here, singing 'Don't Stop Believin'' by Journey. And I could remember the first night I've performed with Neal and Cody here too. We sang 'Separate Ways' by Journey. Talk about, what a night that was!
Me, Neal, and Cody have become famous here and I could never forget the recognition. And it's great! Feels like we're celebrities in the dragon city.
And then I looked at the gem that's on the stage. The gem that can read my mind and play the music from my head, so everyone in the crowd can hear it. Also to make whoever stands on the stage make their voice louder.
The gem started to change its color. From red to blue. That means it's ready to go, ready for me to do my thing.
To think of a certain song and it'll play the music from my head.
Pretty much pure magic.
And I know what song me and the guys are singing, since we've been practicing it for the past several days.
It's 'Anyway You Want It' by Journey. I could never forget that Journey is my favorite band up to this day. And it's all thanks to Joanna Stanton.
This one will be for you as well, Joanna. As always.
You really did like Steve Perry.
I closed my eyes and thought hard. Alright, here we go.
That's when the thought finally came to me and I opened my eyes. I looked at Cody and Neal and I held up three fingers.
They both nodded I counted quietly to them, and then the three of us singed at the same time, "Anyway you want it, that's the way you need it! Anyway you want it!" Then the music from the song played from my head and everyone can hear it. The instrumental music played loud over the crowd. Several dragons cheered at the human music.
I sang by myself as my cue came, "She loves to laugh, she loves to sing, she does everything!" I shook my body in rhythm and sang, "She loves to move, she loves to groove, she loves the loving things!"
I raised my arm high in the air, "Oh, all night, all night! Oh, every night!" I pointed the crowd with my other hand, "So hold tight, hold tight! Oh baby, hold tight!"
I dropped both my arms to my side, "She said." Then me, Neal, and Cody sang together, "Anyway you want it, that's the way you need it! Anyway you want it! Anyway you want it, that's the way you need it! Anyway you want it!"
I sang by myself again, tapping my foot repeatedly, "I was alone, I never knew, what good love could do! Oh, then we touched, then we sang, about the loving things!"
"Oh, all night!" I pointed at the crowd and they sang back, "All night!" I sang to the crowd, "Oh every night!" I pointed at the crowd with both hands, "So hold tight, hold tight! Oh, baby hold tight!"
I pulled my hands back, "She said!" Then me and the guys sang together again, "Anyway you want it, that's the way you need it! Anyway you want it! Anyway you want it, that's the way you need it! Anyway you want it!"
The guitar solo played for about fifteen seconds after that and my cue to sing again, "She said, hold!!!"
I held my right hand beside my face as I sang with all my might, "Hold on, hold on, hold on!!!" I dropped my hand to my side.
The guitar solo played again for another fifteen seconds and I sang, "Oh, she said!" Then me, Cody, and Neal did this at the same time again, "Anyway you want it, that's the way you need it! Anyway you want it! Anyway you want it, that's the way you need it! Anyway you want it!"
Neal and Cody tapped their paws in rhythm as we sang again, "Anyway you want it, that's the way you need it! Anyway you want it! Anyway you want it, that's the way you need it! Anyway you want it!"
I sang this by myself, raising my arm in the air, "Anyway!!!"
I slowly lowered my hand close to my face, "Anyway!!!"
"Anyway!!"
Then the three of us sang together, "Anyway you want it, that's the way you need it! Anyway you want it!" I could see Neal and Cody's head held up high as they sang their hearts out, "Anyway you want it, that's the way you need it. Anyway you want it!"
"Anyway you want it, that's the way you need it! Anyway you want it! Anyway you want it, that's the way you need it! Anyway you want it!"
I raised both my hands high in the air and sang by myself, "Anyway!!!!!" The music played on for another few seconds and then it stopped. It was over.
All three of us were panting and I looked back at the gem, it changed its color from blue to red. I looked at the crowd of dragons and several humans who have came here, as they all cheered.
Neal and Cody grinned and so did I.
Well another performance has been greatly made by the three of us.
Thank you guys for singing with me as usual.
*****
Me, Sierra, Amanda, Neal, Cody, and Eleanor are all out on the streets on our way home from the Braveheart. The full moon shining on us, under the night sky.
And boy I bet we are feeling tired. At least, we're away from the crowd.
All of us are near the big fountain that's in the middle of the dragon city and near the fountain, I could see a lone dragon. I frowned at it from a distance. I could even hear it...Sobbing.
It's crying. Someone's crying close to the fountain.
I held out my hand to stop to the others, "Hey wait!"
They all stopped and looked at me. Sierra cocked her head, "What is it?"
I pointed at the dragon at the fountain, "Look."
They all followed my gaze and they had worried looks. Sierra asked Neal without looking at him, "Who's that?"
Neal shook his head without looking at Sierra, "I don't know."
Amanda suggested, "We need to go see what's wrong."
I nodded in agreement, "Alright, lets go." Then all of us went to the dragon crying. Apparently it crashed down to the stone ground and it buried its head in its paws, crying.
I had a concerned look for the dragon. Apparently by the sound of its voice, it's a girl. A dragoness with black scales. And I could see on her body that she has some...Scratch marks, like she was attacked by another dragon.
I held out my hand to the black dragoness, "Hey, are you okay?"
The black dragoness gasped and rose her head from her paws. She was surprised by all of us near her, "What...What are you doing here?"
Neal lowered his head to her and said, "We came to see what's wrong. What happened? did someone attack you?"
The dragoness glanced away and waved us away with her paw, she sniffed her nose, "Just go away, there's nothing you can do about it."
Sierra with a narrowed face said, "No way, whoever did this to you will pay for it. Who did this to you?"
Amanda came close to the dragoness's boy and reached out her hand to touch her. Amanda placed her hand on her body. But then the dragoness got up real fast and scampered a bit away from Amanda's touch, "Don't touch me!!"
All of us were in shock from her outburst and when she stopped scampering, I could see in her eyes that she's really scared. The dragoness sat down on her haunches and hung her head down low. She started shaking as she cried her eyes out again. Her wings drooped to her sides.
Amanda placed a hand to her mouth and muttered, "Poor thing."
Neal bounded to the dragoness and said with a stern voice, "Look, I'm an officer of this city. And you must tell me who did this to you."
The dragoness raised her head and snarled at Neal, "I DON'T KNOW WHO DID THIS TO ME!!!"
He gasped and backed away from her. The dragoness added, "It was dark in an alley and this drake just attacked me. I don't know what the color of his scales are and that was it." She shut her eyes tight, "I managed to get away from him."
Sierra came up to her and said, "Come with me and Wayne to our house, we'll keep you in there and then tell us everything you know."
The black dragoness cocked her head at Sierra, "Why? Why are you guys helping me? I just told you there's nothing you can do for me."
Cody came up to her and said, "Because we just want to help you, no matter what you think."
Amanda added, "We know that we don't know you, but we don't want to leave you out in the dark crying." She smiled and said, "We all look out for each other, even looking out for a stranger."
I walked close to the black dragoness, placing a hand to my chest, "Please lady, let us help you."
The black dragoness stared at us for another moment and she sighed, "Where's your house?"
*****
It's about morning at the house me and Sierra live in. A pretty nice place. Right now, the skies are dark with rainclouds and it's pouring down rain outside. Thunder booming across the dragon city.
Since four years ago, me and Sierra have lived in this two story stone house in the city and so far, we love it.
All of us brought the black dragoness here just for Neal to question her about what happened to her. And so far, she answered every last one of them.
This morning Neal went to find the other officers that work with him, so they would investigate. The black dragoness even told him which alley it was where she was attacked.
The black dragoness even told us that the only family she has, is her older brother and she told us where he lived. Cody went out with Eleanor to find him. As it turned out, her brother's an officer too, so he'll help Neal out with the investigation. Which I hope her brother can handle it.
Meanwhile, the black dragoness is right now sitting in one of the bedrooms in my house. Just laying around on her stomach, still looking sad and glum. She must have been traumatized.
And the reason why she was traumatized? Well lets just say that she was more than just attacked. There was more to it than that.
And since she told us about it all of us, including Sierra, felt sick about what the dragoness told us.
We...Really don't have any words to say to her.
Except...We're sorry she went through all that.
Now I just wish I was there to save her from that drake. That way she wouldn't feel so...Broken.
I was just standing at the opening of the room. Just staring at the black dragoness. I had a dad for her. I still can't believe what happened to her.
She...Looks so broken, from the inside. I can tell from right here.
She...Reminds me of Sierra. I remembered how broken she was. When she thought it was her fault that Eric died, when she thought she became a monster for years. But it was never her fault and she never was a monster.
But this is different with the black dragoness. This is a fate a lot worse than what Sierra went through.
Of course in my opinion, Sierra has been through worse than the black dragoness. But I also think they both have a thing in common.
They both have been through a VERY traumatic experience.
The black dragoness is still laying on her stomach and I had a determined look on my face. I don't want to see her like this anymore.
I helped Sierra through her broken down state, seven years ago. Now I'm helping that dragoness.
And it starts right now.
I took several slow steps toward her, the dragoness heard me and looked at me. I smiled at her as I got closer, "Hey." I titled my head, "How are you doing?"
The dragoness glanced away from my gaze. She shut her eyes tight.
My smile melted away in a instant. I took another step toward her, "Look...I get it. You're...Not feeling happy."
The dragoness opened her eyes and remarked, "You certainly figured it out."
I put on a smile for her again, and said to her in a comforting voice, "Everything will be alright. You're safe and that drake won't hurt you again."
The dragoness looked at me with a glare, "Ha! How's everything going to be fine? I don't know who the drake is and how is your friend going to find him?"
I shrugged my arms, "I don't know, I....I...I'm just keeping the faith."
The dragoness said, "Faith. You're certainly the optimist. But what happens if your friend can't find him?"
I answered, "Then we accept the fact that he won't come back and hurt you. That he knows he won't come after you."
The black dragoness tightened her front paws on the furs she grabbed onto. Her tail moved to her side nervously, "I...I'm scared."
I had a pity look for her. I don't blame her. I said to her, "Listen, he's not going to hurt you. There's nothing to be afraid of."
She said to me as she gazed at the floor, "Yes there is. I'm a dragoness and I'm afraid of something. Dragons are not supposed to be afraid of anything." She hissed to herself, "I'm such a poor excuse of a dragoness. And I've shunned my parents image."
I shook my head, "Don't say that. Being afraid of something is normal." I put on a angry stare, "What that drake did to you, THAT is what a poor excuse of a dragon would do. And you." I shook my head again, "You're not a poor excuse."
The dragoness looked at me, "How would you know? You don't even know me. We don't talk to each other. come to think of it, I've never met you or your friends." She had a glum look again, "I...I don't have a lot of friends. I don't talk to a lot of dragons, only my brother. I...I'm just shy about socializing, sometimes."
I walked up to her and placed a comforting hand on her neck. I said, "Look...I know that your parents died. And...Honestly what happened to you last night, is the most horrible thing you could go through."
The dragoness sighed, as she didn't flinch from my touch, "Tell me something I don't know, human."
I gave her a smile, "But...I'm here for you, if you'd let me."
She looked at me, her eyes wide, "What?"
I nodded and let my arm fall to my side, "You heard me. You said that you don't have a lot of friends. Well let me be your friend. You can also let Sierra and the others be your friends."
The dragoness asked, "So where is Sierra?"
I gestured the opening with my thumb, "She's with Amanda downstairs."
The dragoness muttered, "Oh."
I said, "Look, I know we don't know each other, but...I really want to help you and I want to be your friend."
She asked another question, "Why are all of you helping me? More importantly, why are YOU helping me?"
I sighed and backed away from her, "Well for one thing, why we are all helping you, it's because we're not the kind of people who would just leave someone crying. And I know we don't know you, but you needed our help."
I went on, "Second, why I'm helping you is....Because you remind me of Sierra."
The dragoness asked, "What?"
I nodded, "Sierra has been through so much. Just like you."
"What happened?"
I let out a breath, "Her parents died, and then years later, her mate died. And she thought it was her fault that her mate died."
The dragoness had a pity look and I said, "And she thought she became a monster afterwards. When she killed the ones who killed her mate. She...Didn't let it go. In fact, she's like you, all broken on the inside. Broken for a long time. Until I fixed her."
The dragoness shook her head in pity, "That's terrible." She hung her head and muttered, "I guess you're right, I do remind you of her." She sighed, "But what can you do for me? I'm not Sierra, we're both just two different dragons. What she went through, is a lot different than what I went through."
I took the dragoness's chin in my hands and looked directly in her eyes, "No it isn't."
The dragoness looked back at me and I went on, "What both of you went through, it is the same thing. You're broken, just like she was, now at least let me help fix you."
She asked, "How?"
I grinned at her, "Have you heard that I sing at the Braveheart?"
The dragoness stared at me and said, "I have heard that you're the human who sings there. But...I haven't gotten a chance to see you. I...I don't eat at the Braveheart a lot."
I said to her, "Well this song that I want to sing to you, I sing this to Sierra a lot. And it always cheered her up."
Her eyes went wide, "You...Want to sing to me?"
I nodded and winked at her, "At least, let me try that for you. Please...You need this."
The dragoness said, "You know...For years, when I was a hatchling, I thought that all humans were evil. Especially dragon slayers. But...Ever since I've heard of what you and Sierra did, to bring both our species together...I didn't believe it." She smiled at me, "I think I do now. And...I never thought I would talk to not one, but TWO humans."
I gave her cheek a rub, "Hey...We're not all evil. I'm not evil and Amanda's not either. But....Humanity has changed. There are no more dragon slayers, there's a new age and you should live in it. Don't hide from it anymore. The humans have embraced your kind."
The dragoness stared at me and I backed away from her, "Look...I'm going to do it now." I gestured to her, "If you want?"
The black dragoness sighed and nodded her head, "Go ahead."
I smiled at her and nodded. I cleared my throat and then t her.
The song that I wanted to sing to her, it's 'Open Arms' by Journe. Sierra loves that song and I've sing that to her when I get the chance.
Now this dragoness will get that chance.
Now it's time for me to fix her.
I whistled the song's tune and then I started, "Lying beside you, here in the dark. Feeling your heartbeat with mine."
"Softly you whisper, you're so sincere. How could our love be so blind?"
"We sailed on together! We drifted apart! And here you are by my side!!" I winked at her again.
Then I raised my arms high and sang, "So now I come to you! With open arms!!!" I dropped them to my sides.
Her eyes went wide as I continued, "Nothing to hide! Believe what I say! So here I am! With open arms!!!"
"Hoping you'll see, what you love means to me open arms!"
I whistled the song's tune and I sang when my cue came, "Living without you. Living alone! This empty house seems so cold!"
The dragoness smiled at me and I went on, "Wanting to hold you. Wanting you near! How much I wanted you home!"
I pointed at her, "But now you've come back, turned night into day! I need you to stay!!"
I dropped my arm to my side, "So now I come to you! With open arms!!!"
"Nothing to hide! Believe what I say! So here I am! With open arms!!!"
"Hoping you'll see, what your love means to me open arms!" I whistled the song's tune and then it ended.
I was breathing heavily and then I asked the dragoness as I caught my breath, "So? ....What do you think?"
The dragoness didn't take her eyes off of me and she said, "Come here."
I frowned at her a bit, but I didn't argue. I walked close to her and then she lowered her head to my level. Then without hesitation, she buried her face into my chest. She started crying.
I said to her, "Aw, don't cry."
The dragoness said, while she was crying, "I'm happy, Wayne. You...You've cheered me up."
Now that made my heart beating as I knew I did a good job. Then I returned the gesture by wrapping my arms around her head, hugging her against my chest.
We were like this for a long time and I asked her, "Are we friends?"
She sniffed and said, "I think we are...Human."
I kissed her forehead and said, "Call me Wayne. I did tell you my name last night."
The dragoness giggled, "Okay...Wayne."
I smiled and said to here while gently rubbing under her chin, "You know? ....I think I should give you a name, just for being my friend."
The dragoness pulled her head off my chest finally and looked at my eyes, "I already have a name."
I shook my head at her, "No...A human name. That way I wouldn't have to say your real name."
She frowned at me, "What human name could you possibly give me?"
Suddenly the sun started to shine through the window and I looked outside where I'm standing. I could see that the rainclouds have finally went away. And in the distance, I could see a rainbow in the sky.
The sun's rays are shining on the black dragoness. She looks beautiful in the rays, just like a rainbow. And I smiled to myself. I have came up a human name for her.
I said to her, "Rain."
She cocked her head, "Huh?"
"Rain." I gestured my hand to her, "You're name's Rain."
She asked, "Why Rain?" I pointed outside and she followed what I pointed. Then she looked at me and asked, "Because of the storm outside?"
I shook my head and said, "No, it's because of the rainbow. I'm naming you after a rainbow."
She cocked her head again, "The rainbow?"
I smiled and nodded, "You're always beautiful, just like the rainbow. And out of the eye of the storm, there's a rainbow. You are just like a rainbow, because when the day turns dark, a light shines through it. And the sun has shine down on you, and you would fly through the rainbow. You're the rainbow, Rain."
The black dragoness that I've named Rain beamed at me and said, "That's...Beautiful, Wayne."
I nodded, "You're welcome, Rain."
Rain nodded, "Rain...I'll cherish that human name. Forever."
I wrapped my arms around her head and hugged her. She wrapped her paw around me, returning the hug. She said to me with devotion in her voice, "Thank you, Wayne."
I looked to my right as hugged her. I saw at the opening of the room that Sierra and Amanda are watching us. They both smiled. I winked at them while I was hugging Rain.
You're our friend now, Rain.
And we'll always be there for you.
