The Dark Wanderer Chapter 2

Welcome home

The rays of the morning sun shone in through the mouth of Kanna's cave, causing the Absol's eyes to flutter open groggily. She yawned and smacked her lips slightly, shaking off her sleepiness, before looking down with a tender smile at the two cubs clinging to her for warmth. But before she knew it, she had a pair of inquisitive eyes fixed on her own, and once again she was surprised.

Now that she could see Dominic clearly in the morning light, not only was he exceptionally pale skinned, his eyes were a faded dusty red color, as well as pupils that were oval and sharp at the top and bottom, almost if he had slitted pupils! Although she winced at the twin slash marks down his right eye, which were still healing.

Almost all at once Kanna felt a surge of wonder and pride swell in her chest. It was almost like he was another of her kind! It made her feel even closer to this strange little human who had suddenly popped into her life, instantly changing it, and making her feel like an emptiness in her life was finally being filled.

Dominic tilted his head at her but shook off his sleepiness. “Mm, is it morning already?"

Kanna smiled down at him, “why yes dear it is, did you sleep well?"

Dominic looked down and then back up at her. “I tried but... I kept having bad dreams and waking up". He looked sad and thoughtful for a moment. “I... kept hearing screaming...and crying..."

Kanna frowned and rubbed his cheek with her own. “It's ok dear, it should go away in time..." 'Perhaps Hes having flash backs to whatever happened to him?' She mused, as she began to absentmindedly groom the patch of fur on the top of his head, which she noticed was jet black, in an interesting contrast to his red eyes and almost snow colored skin. 'With every moment I keep getting surprised by this little cub. She chuckled inwardly. I'll help him get past it.'

Dominic smiled and closed his eyes. “That feels nice" He mumbled. He then looked at Kanna from the corner of his eye with a slight blush. “Umm... can...can I call you... mother?"

Kanna blinked at him for a moment before smiling down at him warmly. “Of course, you can dear, I already told you I'd take care of you from now on!" She said, nuzzling his cheek again, before returning to her grooming.

Within moments Valirie began to stir and opened her eyes as well, yawning sleepily, before smiling up at the two. “morning" she said happily, as she continued to snuggle against Kanna for warmth, making Kanna purr with pleasure, and finish her ministrations.

Kanna smiled and nuzzled Valirie's cheek. “And good morning to you Valirie."

At this the little Noibat frowned slightly. “Umm if you don't mind could you call me Val? Valirie sounds too formal!"

At this Kanna chuckled, “Not at all dear, I think it suits you well."

Dominic nodded and hugged Val. “Yeah I think so too!"

Val smiled cheerily up at the two of them, “Thanks mom, big brother!"

At this Kanna chuckled warmly, and Dominic blinked at Val bemused. “Big brother, why would you call me that?"

Val giggled, “Well we have a new mom, and we've been together for as long as I can remember, but I see you as a brother." “Is that okay?" she asked with slight uncertainty in her eyes.

Dominic blinked, and slowly smiled, cuddling against val. “Sure! I'd be proud to call you my little sis!"

At this Val squealed happily and nuzzled against Dominic's chest. “Yay, that makes me so happy big brother!"

Kanna chuckled, "well it's good to see you both in such high spirits this morning, and I'm proud to call you, my cubs." nuzzling them affectionately, causing the two to sigh happily.

Kanna then grew thoughtful once again, I'm going to have to teach them how to use their power, the forest can be dangerous, and it would be good to see what other abilities Dominic will present? She then shook herself from her reverie. “Well then you two, feeling hungry?"

Both looked up with grins. “Yes please!" They said enthusiastically making Kanna giggle.

“Alright then I'll be right back." Kanna then uncoiled from around the two, standing up and stretching languidly, before moving to the back end of the small cavern where she kept her berry stash. 'Hm, I am going to have to figure out some way to get things for Dominic.' She thought, knowing that the diet and growth of humans were different from Pokémon, she would also have to find a way to get more of that “cloth" humans always seemed to wear. Maybe the nearby human settlements? Her expression became shrewd, knowing the stigma of her kind she could easily find some way to distract them and steal some supplies for her cubs. She chuckled connivingly at this. This could be fun. She grinned inwardly.

…...

4 days later

Dominic had his eyes closed in concentration as he meditated, legs crossed with his back against a tree. Mother had taught him this was the easiest way to get in touch with his power, and as he relaxed and released another breath, he felt something stir in his chest, deep in his mind he saw a bright purple flame, and the more he focused on it the brighter it got. Unbeknownst to him, with his eyes closed he could not see the thin purple aura rising around his body, and flowing out from underneath his closed eyelids.

He continued to concentrate, suddenly finding it slightly harder over time to keep his hold on the energy as it grew larger as he focused. Suddenly a strange instinct popped into his head along with something that sounded like a voice. Use me...move forward, flash! And in that moment, he suddenly felt as if the wind was rushing past him, and as he opened his eyes, he found himself ten feet away from the tree he was meditating in front of, and stared in awe at the purple aura surrounding his body.

“Oh, wow big brother!"

Dominic turned his head to see Val fluttering not too far away from where he was before he teleported.

“That was so awesome, looks like what mom taught you is starting to sink in!"

Dominic looked over at Val sheepishly, as he shook off his aura. “Well, I'm still a little shaky teleporting, but I think I'm getting the hang of it now!"

Val giggled girlishly. “Well, I'd say you're getting better! That's the furthest I've seen you teleport so far!"

Dominic grinned, as he stood up and stretched, shaking off the stiffness in his muscles from sitting in place for so long. “Well then, glad that I impressed you sis!"

She giggled again, fluttering over to Dominic and giving him a hug around his neck. “I'll always be proud of my big brother!" She exclaimed as she rubbed her cheek against his.

They were interrupted from their affections by a rustling sound, as Kanna emerged from the bushes, toting a bag of goods slung across her back.

Dominic smiled at her. “Welcome back mother!" Val fluttered onto his shoulder as Dominic moved over to greet Kanna, giving her a hug around the neck. “Where have you been, we haven't seen you since we woke up?"

Kanna smiled, and rubbed her cheek against his. “Just went out to get some supplies dear." 'No need to let them know I stole them from those silly humans', she chuckled inwardly.

As he pulled away, Dominic once again found himself becoming perplexed, how was mother able to find some of the things she brought back, like clothes for him, and other odds and ends? Dominic shook away his thoughts. “Anyway, mom, guess what!?"

Kanna blinked at him and tilted her head. “What is it dear?"

Dominic smiled before closing his eyes as he did before, concentrating his energy until he heard the voice again. Use me... use me... move forward, never stop, don't waver, FLASH. Then in the blink of an eye he was gone, behind Kanna with a grin on his face. “Over hereeee!' He shouted teasingly.

Kanna blinked surprised before turning around, a smile spreading across her face as she saw Dominic waving cheerily at her from a few feet away.

“Great job dear! you sure are learning quickly!" He's learning so fast, I only taught him the basic idea yesterday and he seems to already be absorbing it like a sponge. Pride and incredulity filled her up all at once, at this rate he's going to be growing nonstop in no time!

Dominic grinned happily. “Yeah, and I only figured out the trick to doing it a few minutes before you came back!"

Kanna blinked at him. “What do you mean by trick?" She asked, intrigued. What is he going to surprise me with this time? She thought wryly.

Dominic closed his eyes in thought. “Well, I was meditating by that tree over there, until I started to feel my energy...then I heard a voice."

Kanna tilted her head. “A voice, what did it say?" a worm of worry etched itself into her mind. That sounds strange even for a Pokémon.

Dominic put his hand under his chin in thought. “Well, when I used teleport both times, it said; Use me... use me... move forward, never stop, don't waver, FLASH!" Dominic frowned slightly at this. “Now that I think about it, that is pretty weird."

Kanna's face took on a serious expression at this, as she concentrated more studiously on Dominic's aura than the first time, when she had found him. As expected, she saw the purple flame of his psychic aura, but as she looked deeper, she saw something that made her eyes widen, deep in the middle of his natural aura, there was a darkish purple, almost black aura swirling around, and as she continued to study it, it seemed to be... growing. Then to her surprise, she felt a presence from within the aura, almost as if it were acknowledging her, and she almost felt like she could see it giving her a smirk, before all of the sudden, she couldn't see it anymore, and all she saw was his normal aura.

Kanna was slightly spooked, but decided whatever that was, it meant no harm at the moment, she made a mental note to keep an eye on it though. She was snapped from her thoughts from Dominic piping up. “Umm mom, are you okay, you were quiet for a bit there?"

Kanna shifted her expression from serious to a small smile. “Yes dear, sorry, I was just thinking about something..." 'One surprise after another, let's see what happens the more Dominic grows.' Kanna mused. She then regarded Val, and Dominic with a steady look. “Well then you two, lets head back so I can drop this bag off, then we can work on our training, how does that sound?"

Dominic and Val both had excited looks on their faces as they nodded enthusiastically.

“Yeah, I can't wait to learn more about my powers!" Dominic said with a suddenly resolute look on his face. While Val simply nodded in agreement.

Kanna chuckled, “Well then, glad to see you are both so serious about your growth! Let's get going then."

The two nodded. “Yes mom!"

With the supplies put away and a small meal shared between the three of them, Kanna sat before the two children Infront of the mouth of their cave, while they sat a short distance away from her.

Dominic had a serious expression, ready to figure out more about himself, even if it was only a little. Within the past few days, he had felt himself become restless, as if he were something unexplainable. Kanna gave he and Val a scrutinizing look.

“So, tell me Dominic, Val? How much can you remember of the outside world?"

Dominic looked down in a thoughtful manner, while Val scrunched her face in thought, speaking first. “I don't really know... I'm still little, I don't know much..." Dominic looked thoughtful, looking down at the ground before returning his attention to Kanna.

“I know we humans have big cities and villages, and that some people catch Pokémon and train them, but I can't think of much more than that." At this Dominic looked down in thought. 'How can I remember that much yet know nothing of me?' Dominic shook his head and returned his focus to his mother.

Kanna nodded looking thoughtful herself for a moment, before looking over to Dominic. “So, tell me Dominic, do you have a Pokeball for Val?"

Dominic tilted his head for a moment, then reached into his pocket, pulling out a custom lavender Pokeball. “Yes, it's right here."

Kanna nodded before she moved on. “Then you should know..." she gave them both a worried look. “If other humans come around...hide, you are both young, and they may think me a wild animal." She looked over at Dominic. “Until you are older Dominic, any human who comes by will think you lost, or an orphan, if they do, they may see me as a threat... and take you away from me..." she said this with a sad look, making Dominic's heart skip a beat. 'She really does love us!'

Kanna nodded before continuing. “Until you are considered the age of a trainer Dominic, they will assume the worst, but when you are of age, we can simply lie and say you are my trainer, so we must all be very careful." she said eying the two with seriousness.

Dominic, suddenly took on a very serious expression, and gave Kanna a resolute nod. “I understand mother, and thank you, but..." he looked down before returning his gaze to Kanna's “when I am old enough, I would like to go to the outside world." his eyes took on a misty look before he continued. “When I am old enough, I want to become a trainer!" his eyes took on a determined look. “I want to find out who I am, and the best way to do that would be to travel as a trainer, right!?"

Kanna looked stunned for a moment, before chuckling and nodding. “I guess so, I can't fault you for wanting that." 'Hes so intelligent for his age!' she thought with wonder and pride. “But before that dear we must train your abilities and mind, same goes for you Valirie!"

Val's eye twitched mildly at the mention of her full name but let it go. “So, what now mom?" she inquired.

Kanna giggled inwardly at her daughter's response to her full name. “Now we get ourselves ready... for what's to come."

Authors note: well, this took longer than I expected to write out, but my job is a jerk, I work the night shift and enjoy my beer. the next chapter will most likely be an age skip, but I am pretty sure I will have a bit of Dominic at age eight on the next chapter before the time skip happens. But hoping I still get some interest.
