Chapter One:

Trillia carefully cut the green beans from the vines for the feast tonight. She glances up at the guard watching her from the garden gate. At least they let her continue with her daily chores; the chosen ones are usually locked up out of fear they will run. Her eighteenth spring made her eligible for the sacrificial choosing. That morning when the Healer was about to pull a name, Trillia stood up.

_“Wait… there is no need to pull a name. I wish to volunteer." Gasps rang out among the villagers, especially from her family. “Trillia! Sit down this instant!" Her mother's eyes almost popped out of her head and she grabbed her arm, and her fingers dug into Trillia's flesh. _

“No, mother, I've made my decision. I'm taking control of my fate and I choose not to ever lose a daughter to the dragon." She yanked her arm away from her mother's grasp and walked toward the center where the Healer stood.

“Are you sure, child, you would willingly sacrifice yourself?" Concern was etched on the Healer's face. There was something else though, in her eyes, pride.

“Yes, I don't want to spend the next three springs worried that I or one of my friends might be chosen. I choose my fate."

The Healer pulled Trillia into her arms. “Then so it shall be."

“NO!" Her mother cried out and her father wrapped his arms around her and pulled her away. He looked over his shoulder at Trillia with a look of pain and then turned back, leading his wife to their home. Trillia knows her family will miss her but she has ten other brothers and sisters, three of which beyond the age of choosing so she knew their line would carry on.

No one in the history of their village had ever volunteered. Trillia continued picking the best vegetables for the feast. Her skin prickles and gurgling sounds swirl in her belly. She closes her eyes and takes a long breath to settle her nerves. Yes, she is afraid but she is also determined. She wants to learn the truth of what happens when a maiden is left for the dragon.

The maiden always disappears without a trace, no blood, nothing. There are tales that the dragon eats them and there are tales that he takes them back to his cave and keeps them for his personal pleasure. Then there are the strangest tales of all that he is looking for his mate; that the right woman, when his seed enters her, will change into a dragon. Most do not believe the last part. Most think he eats them in one bite and that is why there is no blood. Others believe the second choice. No one knows the truth and that is what she wants to find out.

Each day the dragon flies over head and Trillia looks up into the sky waiting. He usually flies over them around mid meal. She finally sees him and she feels a stirring deep within her as goose bumps raise the hairs on her arms. She has always had that reaction when seeing him.

She once asked her mother if she ever felt that way when she saw him and she looked at her appalled. “Of course not! I've never heard of such a thing!"

Trillia never mentioned it to anyone again not wanting to be thought of as more of an outcast than she already is. Girls are not meant to have strong opinions within the village, except for the Healer, they were meant to be breeders only. Trillia's mouth had gotten her into trouble on many occasions. She challenged everyone and everything. She had been instructed to pick a switch from the old tree out back so many times there is a well worn path leading to it. She did not care. No amount of beatings would stop her from speaking her mind. It was one of the reasons she had decided to volunteer; she was tired of no one listening to her and everyone thinking something was wrong with her.

She watches as the dragon flies out of site and she feels the familiar ache that always accompanies his leaving. She hopes tonight she will finally understand why she has these feelings the dragon invokes in her and the answers to her other questions even if the cost is her own death. Frankly she does not believe the dragon eats the maidens. If the dragon just wanted a meal, what would he care if they were male or female? A rush spreads from her belly, up her spine and heat radiates outward as her mind travels to what the dragon actually does with the women.

*****

Trillia has been tied between the posts high up on a hill far from the town for over an hour. She is tired of waiting and hopes he will show up soon. She has only glimpsed the dragon in the sky, never up close and she trembles in anticipation. She figures he is probably larger than the average human. She hopes he will give her a chance to ask her questions before he does whatever he is going to do to her.

The sky is darkening as the sun lowers toward the horizon. She can hear his wings as he approaches, landing a good bit away from her, she wonders why he does not come closer.

He stands there waiting for her screams that never begin. He hesitantly steps forward to look at the woman that is tied between the posts where they always leave the human females.

"Hello Dragon." She looks him up and down. He is not as tall as she thought he would be as he is only about as tall as a man and a half. He has a long neck and dark green scales.

His mouth drops open. "Uh, hello. So you are the one chosen for me? Why aren't you screaming? The females are always screaming." He shakes his head at the memory of the last one and how her screams had hurt his ears. Sometimes it was difficult for him not to kill them because their screams hurt his sensitive ears so much. But this female wasn't screaming at all. She is just watching him and looking down between his hind legs which makes him grin. She seems like a healthy human female with her thick, shiny brown hair, deep brown eyes and curves that he knows is favorable to a human male who would want her to bare their children.

"No."

He blinks. "What? What do you mean no?"

"I wasn't chosen, I volunteered."

He steps back. "You... volunteered?" Never in all the years, over one hundred years in fact, had anyone ever volunteered. "Why would you volunteer?"

"I have no desire to get married, have babies and watch my daughters go through the choosing process from the time they are eighteen until they are twenty-one. I figured if I volunteered I wouldn't have to go through that. None of my daughters would be sacrificed. Besides, I have questions."

"Rather logical for a human female."

He backs up another step as he sees anger flare in her eyes.

"And what the hell is that suppose to mean? That because I'm a woman I'm not logical!"

"Uh, well..."

"Women can be quite logical when they want to be!" She stomps her foot in the dirt making a puff of dust fly up.

"Oh, um, sorry."

Her eyebrows shoot up. Did the dragon just apologize to her?

"I didn't mean to offend you, it's just all the human females who have been chosen over the years, they all have been screamers. None talked to me. I thought human females were lacking in any sort of intelligence."

"Well, if you were tied up for some giant monster to come and eat you, wouldn't you be screaming?" She huffs.

He snickers.

"What's so funny?" She frowns as she does not think the thought of him eating females should make him laugh.

"I don't eat the human females."

"Oh..." Maybe the stories were true. "What do you do with them?"

"I give them two choices. One, they can come back and serve me for a year before I see if they are compatible or two, they can see if they are compatible right away and see if my seed changes them into a dragon."

Her eyes widen and hope enters her heart.

"Of course most of the time they won't stop screaming long enough for me to ask them so I just do the second option hoping one way or another it will shut them up." He grumbles.

So the stories are true. If she is compatible she could become a dragon.

"When was the last time a human female turned into a dragon?"

He lowers his head and looks away from her.

"Have you ever seen a human female turn into a dragon?"

He looks back at her. "No... but..."

"NO! Then how do you know that the human females even turn into dragons?" She is appalled that women have been dying for over a century for no reason.

"Because my father told me so! He told me that I would have to search far and wide but not to give up. Someday I would find the right human female and she would shift into a dragon as my seed enters her. My mother was a shifter. They told me the story when I came of age and she showed me how she could shift back into a human."

"Really? If a human female changes into a dragon she can shift back and forth?"

"Yes, my mother did." He says standing to his full height, straight and tall.

"Why is it so hard to find a female that can change into a dragon? I mean if one human female can why can't all of them change?" Trillia's excitement is growing as questions she has mulled over for years are finally being answered.

"My father said there was a great wizard who cursed us from ever being able to have female hatchlings so that we would die out. A sorceress came along and wove a spell into his curse saying that we would be able to find human females who would change into a dragon when we plant our seed in them and they would bare our young. She would be able to move between the human world and the dragon world but the only problem is, we wouldn't be able to tell which females would be able to do that. My father said if I gave protection to a village, I could convince them to give me one female a year to see if she could shift so that's what I did. Unfortunately, in over one hundred years not one has shifted." He hung his head low.

"So what do you do with them when they don't shift?" Her skin began to prickle and her mouth felt like it was filling with cotton.

He looked out of the corner of his eye and mumbled. "Bury them."

"That part of the story is true too? If they don't change, they die?"

He nods. “There is something toxic in our seed that kills human females unless they have whatever it is that will allow them to change." He realizes that maybe it is better when they are screamers. He is starting to like this female and it is nice to have someone to talk to. He does not want her to die but he has to find the right one otherwise he would never have a hatchling and his line will die out. He cannot let that happen.

"So they either change, or they die?" She says quietly.

He cannot believe how rational she is being. He has never met anyone like her before. Maybe, just maybe...

"Does it hurt?" She sighs in resignation.

He looks away from her, not wanting to look into her eyes. "Which part?"

"Any of it, all of it."

He is still looking away from her. Yes, he decided, it was better when they were screamers and he did not have to answer these questions and feel these feelings. "Yes, it hurts when I enter them, though there are things I can do to make it more pleasurable, to make the pain a little more pleasurable. From what my mother said, it hurts when you change, at least the first few times until you get the hang of it." He turns his head back to her and she is watching him.

He does not understand why she is still calm and not screaming at him. If he knew what was coming he would probably be screaming.

"Aren't you scared?" He wants to know what she is feeling.

She nods her head. "Will you, could you..."

"What?"

"Will you do what you can to make it more pleasurable?" She feels moisture increasing between her legs thinking about all the times she thought about him in the past and what he does to the women. She notices the dragon sniffing the air and his nostrils flare as he lets out a low growl. She flinches.

He instantly regrets letting the growl rumble out of him. "Sorry, I can... smell your arousal..."

"oh..."

He steps back, not wanting to intimidate her. "Yes..."

"Yes what?" She looks confused.

"Yes, I can make it more pleasurable for you; I will make it more pleasurable for you."

Curiosity gets the better of her as usual. "H-how?"

He moves closer to her, his tongue darts out, and moves over her breasts. He pulls at her dress with his teeth biting at it until it falls off of her without hurting her. His tongue swirls over her breasts and she moans.

"O-oh..." Her nipples grow hard from the attention and the ache within her spreads heat through her body

He looks at the ropes tying her to the poles and then looks back at her face. "If I untie you, do you promise you won't run?"

"I'm here because I want to be, I'm not going anywhere." He is still watching her. She huffs, "I won't run."

His teeth work at the ropes tied from her left wrist to the post until it falls away. He then bites at the other one until it also falls away. She pulls the ropes off of her wrists and steps toward him. Even though she has promised he is still surprised when she does not try to run.

"Can I-can I touch you?" She asks.

He watches her and then nods his head. She moves until she is standing so close her body is almost touching him. She reaches out, touches the scales on his foreleg and slides her hand up to his breastplate. He watches as her fingers move over him, tracing around his scales, finding the soft skin between them when she works her fingers around them. He shudders when her fingers touch the soft skin between his scales. She moves closer still until she is leaning against his softer scales on his belly and against the rough scales of his chest plate. She marvels at the difference. She hears something coming from his chest, a rumbling sound.

"What's that?"

"What?"

"That sound coming from your chest?" The sound stops.

"Um... dragons purr when they feel good."

She smiles and chuckles. "You were purring at my touch?"

This is all very strange for him. He has never felt like this before. Her hands roaming over his scales both delight him and bother him. He realizes his speared tip is beginning to push from his sheath. He steps back away from her and she notices the dark red pushing up. Curious, she reaches down to touch it.

"No!" He jerks back out of her reach.

She stumbles back and lands on her rump. She is frowning as she stands up, brushing off her bare and now sore bottom.

"I-I'm sorry, I didn't mean to startle you. I just, I didn't..." He does not know what to say. He is enjoying her and does not want her to die. They had all died before her. He had not cared about them though. They were no one to him. But she, she is quickly becoming someone important to him. Her scent is stirring him up and her presence is doing things to him, making him feels things, unexpected things.

"But, I thought you wanted to do this?"

He hears disappointment in her tone and an unexpected pain moves through him. He nuzzles his head gently against her head and chest trying to comfort her.

"I do just not yet. Will you climb up onto my back, between my wings? I'd like to take you to my home." He lowers himself to the ground allowing her to climb up and she settles herself between his wings.

"Hang on tight." He rumbles.

She wraps her arms around his neck but is careful not to squeeze too hard. His large wings spread out on each side of him and he swoops up into the air. She giggles as the air moves over her naked body and she can feel his rough scales between her legs. The sun is setting in the west as he flies away from everything she knows. She does not even glance back. She chose this and whatever happens she is going to enjoy every moment that she can. She closes her eyes and feels the wind blowing her hair back, feels as they move through the air currents and she leans her face against the rough scales on his neck.

"Thank you, Dragon." She realizes she does not know his name. "My name is Trillia, what's your's?"

"Dreyserelnik, but you can call me Drey. Why are you thanking me?"

"Dreyserelnik, I like it. I'm thanking you because no matter what happens this is the most incredible day of my life."

"But what if you die?" He feels an ache in his chest.

"Then I will die happy, knowing I had the most unique experience I could ever have."

He is quiet after that. He flies for a while as his home is far from their village. The sun has gone down and though heat is radiating off of him, she is beginning to shiver from the cold wind blowing against her bare skin.

"We're almost there." He lands on the side of a large mountain that towers over a valley. She imagines during the day he can see very far across the land. She carefully climbs off of his back, trying not to scratch herself on his scales or damage his wings. He shows her to the opening of his cave.

"Stay close."

She follows so close she can feel the heat coming off of him. They walk deep into the cave until she can see light up ahead. She is curious what could be creating light within a cave. As they turn a corner the cave opens up into a large room with luminescent moss all over the cave walls.

"It's beautiful, Drey." She whispers in awe.

"It's called Dragon's Gold." He puffs out his chest.

She looks around and sees blankets and pillows on one side of the cave and trinkets and baubles scattered all over everywhere else. Large piles of it that he must have collected over the years. Most of it even looks valuable.

"I had heard that dragons like to collect things, especially valuable things. You have quite a collection here, Drey."

His chest puffs out further taking in her appreciation of his home. "Thank you."

He lumbers over to his blankets and lies down, motioning for her to join him. She curls up next to him, he pulls a blanket up and over her, curls his tail around her, and then opens his wing over her. "Thank you, Drey."

He wishes she would stop thanking him. Guilt lances through him knowing what he is going to do to her and the most likely outcome. The ache inside him grows.

*****

His eyes open as he feels something strange. She had found a bit of skin that she could reach between his scales at the crook of his foreleg and her fingers are rubbing back and forth over it it. He begins to purr as the sensation is quite pleasurable. He suddenly pushes her away as he realizes the tip of his spear is coming out of the sheath again.

"Damn it woman, can you not keep your hands to yourself!"

She sits up, wrapped in a blanket her eyes flashing at him. "I don't understand, do you find me so unappealing that the thought of being intimate with me repulses you? I thought that is what you want, to mate with me, to see if I will change, to shift into a dragon!" She gets up and kicks something shiny on the cave floor but regrets it immediately as pain shoots through her toe. "Ow!" She sits down, holds her foot and toe in her hands, while rocking back and forth.

He moves close to her, sniffing at her foot. "Are you hurt? Why did you kick with your bare foot like that? I may be a dragon but I know human skin is much more fragile than dragon scales. Maybe you aren't as bright as I thought you were."

She rolls her eyes. "Oh please, I'm smart, maybe even smarter than you! I was just mad and did something stupid. Just because I did something stupid doesn't mean I am stupid." She snorts with disgust at herself and at him.

Drey does not see the difference but he wants her to stop being mad at him so he does not press the issue.

"Why do you keep pushing me away?" He hears the pain in her voice.

He moves back from her and sits on his haunches. He looks around the room and finally back at her. "I like you." Even he is surprised by the words coming out of his mouth.

She shakes her head. "You like me but keep pushing me away, that doesn't make sense."

He huffs and then mumbles, "I don't want you to die."

His words pulse through her but she does not know what to say.

"Dragons are mostly solitary creatures until we find a mate. I find I like your companionship and I'm not in a hurry to see what will happen."

"But I do want to know what will happen."

"Have you no sense of self preservation?"

"Of course, but I volunteered for this knowing that dying was a very real possibility. I'm okay with it."

"Well I'm not!" He turns his back to her.

She starts chuckling and soon it turns into laughter until she is laughing so hard she is snorting.

"What in all that's holy are you laughing at?" His back is still to her but he briefly looks back at her thinking maybe she is touched in the head after all.

She takes gasping breaths trying to stop laughing but it takes a minute before she can talk. "You, here I am offering myself to you, the mighty dragon, and you decide you want companionship?" She shakes her head. "What if I am your mate? If you don't share your seed with me I can't shift. If I can't shift then I can't give you a hatchling."

He looks over his shoulder at her again. She has a point. Maybe she is not so dense after all.

She stands up and limps over to him. She pulls on his foreleg to get him to turn around and he turns and faces her.

"I want to know, Drey, I don't want to wait. We could be flying in the sky together." Red tints her cheeks. "Or staying in bed mating all day."

He chuckles. "Quite insatiable aren't you." He stops chuckling, sniffs the air and his nostrils flare. A growl rumbles out of his chest. She cuddles up to him, running her fingers over his scales, down his sensitive belly and he shudders. She notices the tip peaking out of the top of the sheath again. This time she does not reach for it she just keeps tracing her fingers over the most sensitive areas she can find, between the scales, behind his frills on his head, and back over his belly. He is purring loudly now. He knows he should make her stop but deep inside he wants to know as well. She is certainly different than any other human female he has ever met. Could she be the one?

She glances down and sees it is coming further and further out. She pushes on him to lie back against the cave wall and he does but only because he has made up his mind to let her have her way. She climbs up and lies flat on his chest and belly, letting her arms and legs hang over his sides. She wiggles her body down a little, propping herself up and looking into his eyes.

"No matter what happens, I've enjoyed our time together and I don't want you to feel bad if this doesn't work."

He shakes his head at her foolish courage.

She closes her eyes and continues sliding down his belly until she feels it pressing against her. She knows this can go terribly wrong but something inside of her tells her to keep going. She wiggles and pushes downward as he groans. She glances back at him and he is watching her. She knows it is going to be a tight fit, but if women can push a baby out of there, she can fit him within her. Her legs are wrapped around his sides as she lowers herself further down feeling him push into her. The pressure is intense but she takes her time, allowing her insides to stretch and adjust. She presses down over him taking more of him within her. Growling purring sounds rumble out of him. His hips suddenly thrust upward and she gasps at the sharp pain. She looks into his eyes and knows his mating instinct is getting the better of him. She takes long, slow breaths willing her insides to adjust. He thrusts again, short and quick. She cries out. He growls low and deep as he watches her, trying to force himself to be still. She nods at him and closes her eyes. He thrusts again and she is panting at the intensity of it, but feeling the fullness, the pain is changing, she feels...

His nostrils flare as he hears her breathing change and he growls again thrusting deeper into her as she cries out, but she is pushing down further onto him now, wanting more. He thrusts quickly in and out of her and she throws her head back as guttural sounds rumble out of her. "Oh..."

"Trillia..." He whispers. "Open your eyes." She opens them and looks at him. Her irises have changed from brown to gold and her pupils are now vertical slits. He growls again as he thrusts faster into her until he feels himself explode, his seed shooting into her. She throws her head back and screams as he can hear her bones popping and cracking. One minute she is screaming and the next she is growling as a beautiful red dragon is looking down at him.

"Trillia?"

"Drey..." She purrs.

He roars as he tumbles over with her, rolling around until he has her face down with her tail pushed to the side making room for him. He growls and thrusts into her hard and deep. She purrs loudly as she pushes back against him. He leans forward and bites into her neck, not letting go. She growls as she pushes back and up as he continues thrusting into her not stopping until they are both grunting their release. He rolls off of her trying to catch his breath. She shifts and is once again human. She is panting as she curls up next to him.

"Now aren't you glad I persisted?" She says out of breath.

He chuckles. "Yes..." And then concern laces his voice. "Are you okay?"

"Mmmm, a little sore and exhausted, but I couldn't be better." She fairly purrs.

He pulls a blanket up over her and tugs his courageous woman into him, wraps his tail around her and covers her with his wing. In moments she is softly snoring. He remembers his mother telling him, especially in the beginning, shifting would take it out of her and she would basically be sleeping, eating and shifting until she adjusts to the change. He cannot wait to teach her how to be a dragon. Grinning, he drifts off to sleep.
