Leaves and branches exploded, as the grey kangaroo doe burst through them. Her beautiful coat was torn and bleeding from a dozen injuries. Foam flecked her muzzle and her eyes were wild and unseeing.

Behind her, some unspeakable monster roared. It's blinding white eyes roamed too and fro.

Her breath torn from her chest, she squealed in terror. Almost at limits of her endurance. It was to be her last effort – she had nothing left.

Without warning, something hit her in the lower back. The force of it knocked her head over tail as she tumbled, landing on her belly.

Lower back burning like fire. Legs refused to obey her. Nostrils flared, smelling blood – her blood.

A second later, a loud piercing crack shattered the night, reaching her ears and hitting like a thunderbolt.

Clawing at the ground with her paws, she tried to drag herself away. Fear and heart-stopping pain compelling her – but it was too late,.

From behind, the beast's single eye locked on her and it growled to a halt – leaving her trapped beneath its merciless white gaze.

Desperately she tried to stand; to run, to do anything, but it was too little too late.

All she could do, as shadows loomed up out of the blinding white – was scream...

*

“Nice shot Eddie!” One man exclaimed, as he walked over, then gripped the kangaroo by the tail, dragging it back and flipping it over. “Ah, a doe – well then little girl...”

Snicker's come from the other man, as he slung the rifle over his shoulder. “I like doe's, they're much nicer than buck's! This one's young, very young – oh, don't cry little one...it won't hurt – much!”

Laughing the two men started dragging her back to their vehicle, before she began thrashing and shrieking.

“Shut her up already!” Snarled the first one. “You'll frighten every damn kangaroo off for miles!”

“Gladly,” Grunted the first, as he un-slung his rifle.

As the terrified doe watched, the butt come down on her head and she knew no more...

*

Taking her unconscious body back to their makeshift campsite, they unceremoniously dumped her on the ground and slapped each other on the back.

“Flip you for it - “ Said the first, as he poked at the fire with a stick.

“Sure, why not - “ Grunted the second, as he rummaged through his heavy coat for a coin.

Neither of them seen the gleam of eyes just outside the fire's light – before the eyes narrowed and stared at them.

*

Grinning, the man with the rifle slung over his shoulder won the toss, before he tied the kangaroo doe to the bull-bar of their four wheel drive. Rope was slung around her throat and pulled tight, her paws were tied to the grill and her toes barely touched the ground.

“Make sure they're tight – just in case - “

“I know what I'm doing, besides, by the feel of it, her spine is broken, she couldn't kick if she tried!”

A rough gag was made out of an old sock, her muzzle opened and it was shoved in, before she grunted, consciousness returning reluctantly. With a frightened grunt, the doe struggled wildly, eyes wide and feral in their fear.

“She's going to be so good - “ Smirked the man with the gun, as he unzipped his trousers and pushed them down, before stepping out of them.

“Try not to break this one, alright?” Growled the first, as he went and sat down, preparing to enjoy the show to come.

Gagged, the kangaroo struggled futilely. Her eyes wide in terror. She couldn't escape, couldn't fight. She was helpless. She could only watch on in horror as the man stepped closer, then pressed himself against her furred body. He grunted and she bucked, feeling him force himself inside her.

“Oh, she feels so...” He blinked, then looked down as a spreading stain formed on his shirt. “Oh, fuck m...”

He fell backwards, before his brain realised what had happened – he'd been shot, then come the crack of the gun. His mate leapt up, then began to turn, before he too was shot and fell face first onto the fire. He rolled away, beard going up in flames, hot coals searing into his flesh as he gouged at it, screaming and writhing.

Five people, three women and two men stepped into the light of the fire, one of the women holding a powerful rifle in her hands. Quickly, they subdued the hunters, before one of the men growled in rage and his heavy boot kicked the would be rapist in the groin, crushing his testicles and rupturing his penis.

With a squeal that nearly burst eardrums, the man clutched at himself and writhed in imagined agony. Turning to his friend, the five glared at him, before the lady with the gun walked over and looked at the Kangaroo, who shrieked and shuddered.

“Rest now little one, we are sorry we couldn't get to you quicker.” Whispered the woman, as she lay a hand on the kangaroo's head.

In one swift movement, drove a razor sharp knife into the doe's chest, killing her instantly, before she wiped the bloodied blade on her sleeve, then sheathed the knife.

“So,” Snarled the man, looking down at his crying captive who lay before him, his spine shattered. “You like the little doe's do you? What's the matter? A real buck too much for you? Or do you just enjoy feeling her against you, feel her fear and suffering, whilst you fulfil your dark desires with her unwilling body?”

“What the...who the fuck are you, my legs, I can't feel my legs...”

“Indeed, It was a rather good shot, now, I could have let you both leave, this didn't concern me and mine -”

“You fucking shot me...” Wept the man. “I'm crippled, I can't – I can't move my legs, you got to help me, you've got too - “

A low, feral growl come from beyond the fires light, then a large, scarred and well muscled buck crawled into the light. One ear had been torn, and it's dewlaps curled back, gums dripping saliva as it crawled closer, then stopped beside the man who had spoken.

“This is my friend, Scartail, as you can see, he lives up to his name – adequately.”

“What...the...fuck - “ Stammered the crippled man, lying on the ground.

“As I said, this wasn't our concern – until you decided you'd hurt that doe. We would have left you in peace, if you killed her cleanly. You intentionally maimed her, making her almost helpless to defend herself. Then, to further your crimes – you were going to do something unnatural and unspeakable. I'm assuming, when you were done...you'd leave her here to die in agony, wouldn't you?”

Scartail crawled closer, giving the hysterical human lying on the ground, a much better look at him.

“A quick, clean kill – none of this would have happened. You decided to not uphold the traditions of hunting – now – well, Scartail here? He doesn't mind if they're Doe's or Buck's...if you take my meaning...”

“No, please, you don't understand – we weren't going too!” Pleaded the man.

“Please, no more tears and lies. You're hunting on lands we patrol. Live by the rules, or suffer the consequences for your callous actions, Well – you're about to find them out for yourself!”

Quickly, he was stripped of his clothing, then rolled over and stakes were driven into the ground and he was lashed face first on the cold ground.

“No, please, you can't – you can't let him...” Pleaded their victim. “Have mercy!”

“Mercy?” Spoke the man, as he glanced back over his shoulder. “Where was the mercy you were going to show that Doe?”

Turning away, the five humans walked away, before the man began screaming as Scartail approached, clucking at the man before him...

His screams were long and loud, for nearly an hour, ending in a terrible choking gurgle...

Constable Selene rested her head on her forearms, anger and confusion like two dogs fighting in her mind. First, Geoff had been murdered, by who, or what – they didn't know, then the body in the morgue, the woman from the hospital – just disappearing as if they never existed. Now, the Enclave – Selene knew she couldn't touch them, they were above the law. She viewed them almost treated like foreign diplomats, because some seat shining bureaucrats in Canberra drafted and passed some law. A ridiculous law, giving religious groups such as this, wide ranging authority and power.

With a sigh, Selene sat back and frowned, staring at the ceiling.

“Someone, has to know something - “ Selene wondered to herself. “There has to be an ex-member, someone – who knows what they're doing. How could they take that girl, Cassie? She was scared, genuinely scared for her life – albeit she didn't say they were going to kill her...”

Leave it alone Selene, it doesn't concern you. They're entitled to their way of life, and what they do in their compound, is their private business.

“Like hell it doesn't!” Selene snapped, then blushed, feeling stupid for trying to argue with her own mind and thoughts.

Walking out of the station, she tipped her head back and looked up at the sky, as if expecting some miraculous answer to fall out of the sky at her feet and answer all her questions.

“VK4, this is VK6, do you copy, over?” Come the crackle of the radio.

With a frustrated sigh, Selene un-clipped her radio. “Copy VK6, VK4 receiving, over?”

“VK4, we – we got a situation down here at Blackmore's Bridge.”

“Received, what sort of situation – over?”

“Just get down here, the quicker the better, VK6, out.”

“What now?” Selene muttered, as she locked the station door and walked over to her police car.

*

Finding the Sargent there ahead of her, which didn't surprise her, as in great bold letters and numbers on the hood of his car, was VK6, she stopped then stepped out of the car. Walking over, she seen the ambulance officers vehicle, its strobes flashing. Walking towards her was the town publican, his face white as a sheet and he was shaking from bald head to boots.

“Chris, what - “ Selene began, as she reached out and touched his shoulder.

Twisting away, the Publican dropped to his knees and vomited profusely, gagging on the vile liquid and his lungs heaving.

Frowning, Selene backed away, before she walked over to the edge of the road and the start of the bridge, before her eyes widened and she too spun away, gorge rising in her throat.

“Dear god, what – is – that...”

“I think it was a man - “ Spoke the Sargent's voice quietly behind her.

Was?” Selene gagged, then clutched a hand to her mouth.

“I think...we're still looking for the rest of the pieces...”

*

Selene sat at her desk, a large glass of water before her, as she struggled to settle her stomach. It had been gruesome, grisly, no, words couldn't describe what she had seen. That – thing – that lay dismembered and torn apart, that wasn't a human, it wasn't possible... What could have done that? Who could have done that?

Selene didn't know, all she did know, was she didn't want to know...
