Reaching For A Star

Ever since he came into the world, Ashen has had challenges to overcome in his life. He was born blind and when his parents first noticed this, it was suggested by the doctors that they could give their son optical implants to give him the ability to see. However, the procedure was a painful one, and his parents didn't believe in subjecting their young son to that kind of pain, so they simply decided to let him adapt to his condition. At times, it wasn't easy for Ashen, but thanks to some encouragement and help from his parents, he was able to succeed in life despite not being able to see.

Shortly after high school, Ashen left his hometown of Aikenka and flew out to Georgetown. In Georgetown, there was a university set up there that catered to the blind and deaf, helping them acquire more skills that could be used in the workplace. Ashen wanted to do IT work after college, which was something that even someone who could see clearly would find to be a challenge. However, with the help of mastering using a braille input and output device, which also served as a portable computer that could capture the work sheets and black board with its high-res camera, Ashen was able to land a job in Yokai City for the Faiafokkusu Corporation.

The Faiafokkusu Corporation specialized in making computer technology used for many of the communication devices produced by Dolphin TechCom, the second-largest business on all of Kapernia. Ashen's responsibilities at the Faiafokkusu Corporation involved making sure that the company's website remained up and running, as well as assisting with local computer networks. He wasn't the only one working in the IT department, and his co-workers assisted him, but Ashen was able to do his job effectively, despite not being able to see.

When he wasn't working at his job, Ashen spent some of his time at the Yokai City Library, reading books on Kapernian history. There was also something else he enjoyed doing in his spare time, something that led him to meet a certain someone that he secretly had a crush on. On the east side of Yokai City, a new health club opened about a year ago known as "Fittoshiti" (which was Japanese for "Fit City"). The club was owned by a former All-Kapernian Games athlete named Bruno. Being an ex-athlete, Bruno kept himself physically fit. He had a well-toned chest, arms, and legs, with a firm rump and surprising leg strength for an Akita. His eyes were bright blue, and he had a light tan and white color scheme for his fur, typical of his race. He was friendly and eager to assist others, often spending time making the rounds in the club to spot his customers in the weight room or assist with someone else.

Several years earlier, Bruno competed in the All-Kapernian Games in several Track and Field events, including the 100m and 200m hurdles, the long jump, and pole-vaulting. Going into those games, no one expected that an Akita could compete against the likes of gazelles and rabbits in the hurdle events, and against several kangaroos and rabbits in the long jump events. However, Bruno proved that he could compete with them by winning medals in all three of those events, with a gold in the 100m, and two bronze medals in the 200m hurdles and the long jump.

His appearance in the games had been the highlight of his life. Unfortunately, it would be the only time that he would ever compete in the games. In the pole vault, when Bruno was competing, the pole mysteriously snapped while he was in mid-air, causing him to plummet to the ground, severely injuring himself. It took months of physical therapy for the male Akita to fully recover from his injuries, but while he was doing so he got the idea to open his health club/rehab center, using the popularity he gained as a medal winner to attract customers to his business.

Outside of the health club, Bruno lived alone, in a single-story house on the west side of Yokai City in the Sakura Blossom district. Ever since he discovered that he was gay, Bruno had been seeking out a partner in life that would make him feel loved and happy. Sure, there was the Sakura House, where Bruno could go to have his itch scratched, but he wasn't just interested in having sex with random males. He wanted someone who would be there for him 24/7, someone who he could have meaningful sexual relations with and treat as a loving partner. There were a handful of males who expressed interest in Bruno in the past, but all of them seemed to be motivated by his success rather than genuine compassion. So, Bruno kept his intentions quiet for now and waited to find a male who seemed to care about him beyond his success.

As he worked out, Ashen would periodically sense Bruno's presence and began to wonder how he could tell the male Akita that he was in love with him. It was also the day when most new relationships started on Kapernia, as males and females throughout the planet got up the courage to ask someone they've had a crush on out on a date...and, in some cases, much more.

For several days leading up to Love Day, Ashen thought about how to tell Bruno that he was interested in him. He thought about sending Bruno some sort of gift, but Ashen wondered if that might cheapen the experience. However, Ashen got another idea, one that he figured would be more appropriate for Love Day. Ashen decided that he would just tell Bruno the truth and ask him out on a date. Bruno usually kept the door to his office open, so as long as he wasn't busy with something business related, Ashen might have a chance to speak to Bruno alone.

Ashen wasn't sure what Bruno's schedule was like, or if he was even interested in other males, so Ashen figured that it would be best to ask Bruno ahead of time rather than waiting for Love Day itself. So, when Ashen went back to the club a few days later to work out, he spent the first hour or so going about his usual routine, working out in the weight room and then on one of the treadmills, waiting until Bruno went by. Sure enough, while Ashen was on the treadmill, he heard Bruno nearby, tending to one of the other club members on a different treadmill. Now that Ashen knew that Bruno was around, he had to find the right time to tell the male Akita how he felt about him.

For now, Ashen continued to run on the treadmill, going for several more minutes before turning it off and taking a drink of water to cool off a bit. He felt like he needed a bit of a break from exercising, and decided he'd try and see if Bruno was in his office. Ashen grabbed his cane and made his way towards the office area, thinking about what he was going to tell Bruno when he did speak with him.

Meanwhile, inside his office, Bruno sat at his desk with his hands on the sides of his head, holding it just above the desktop. He let out a sigh, knowing that Love Day was coming up and that it appeared it would be another one where he wouldn't have a date. Every year, Bruno saw numerous other happy couples together, going out on dates together, and even catching on kitsune couple in the middle of mating in a public park one year. Ashen, on the other hand, regularly visited the club several times a week and had been doing so for a couple of years. Up until now, Bruno had a casual relationship with Ashen, much in the same way he did with the rest of his club members, but never imagined that it could turn into anything personal.

Meanwhile, as Bruno was processing all this information, Ashen continued to stand nearby while holding his white cane, feeling a bit embarrassed after Bruno said nothing after he spoke to him. "I'm sorry if I bothered you while you were busy. I just thought that you might want to go out with me", Ashen responded, thinking that maybe Bruno didn't have the same feelings about him as he did about Bruno.

Ashen was about to turn around and walk away, but before he could Bruno finally spoke. "Wait...it's alright...it's just that no one has approached me like this before", Bruno told Ashen in a calm tone, putting his hand on Ashen's shoulder. "Anyway, if you really want to go out with me for Love Day, I'm available. We can go out and get something to eat together", Bruno suggested to Ashen. It seemed as if Bruno put a little more trust into Ashen than his other past boyfriends. He figured that since Ashen had been coming to the club for a while that he wouldn't care as much about Bruno's fame and fortune.

When Ashen heard Bruno's reply, he smiled and turned towards the male Akita, putting a hand gently on Bruno's cheek. "That sounds fine by me. You can pick me up at 7 PM on Saturday", Ashen replied calmly, feeling both happy and excited that Bruno accepted his offer. He started to wonder what would happen when they went out. Being native to Kapernia, Ashen was aware that Kapernians had a strong sex drive and often expressed their affection for one another through mating. Ashen wasn't exactly sure if he would be willing to go that far on a first date, but he would see how it went and if it seemed like he and Bruno got along well, maybe he would be willing to do something with him. A few days later...

As Love Day was being celebrated across Kapernia and Yokai City, Ashen was at home getting ready for his date with Bruno. He took a shower and then got dressed, wearing something a bit more formal than what he'd normally wear. He didn't go all out in wearing his best suit and stuff, but he did put on a nice shirt along with a pair of slacks. After all, this was supposed to be a dinner date and he had no idea where Bruno was going to take him.

After getting dressed, Ashen waited for Bruno to arrive, relaxing on the couch for a few minutes until there was a knock on the door. When he heard the door knock, Ashen got up from the couch and made his way over to the door, using his cane to get around until he got to the door itself and opened it. On the outside of the door, Bruno was waiting for him, dressed in 'business casual' attire with a white shirt, black tie, and black slacks. "Good evening, Ashen...are you ready to go?", Bruno asked in a calm and polite manner.

Ashen heard Bruno's question and soon acknowledged him, telling Bruno that he was ready to go out. From there, the two of them went to Bruno's sleek jet-black car and got inside, with Bruno driving towards Downtown Yokai City. Along the way, Bruno told Ashen where they were going for dinner that evening. He had planned on taking Ashen to the Asahi House, which was known for its Hibachi grill and sushi. Since many of the inhabitants of Yokai City were either originally from Japan or descended from those who came to Kapernia from Japan, the city had adopted many Japanese customs and resembled a modern Japanese city more than it did a modern Kapernian one. Most of the residents spoke both Anglo-Kapernian and Japanese, though some spoke in only one of the two languages.

Bruno knew a little bit of Japanese, but was predominately an Anglo-Kapernian speaker. He might know enough Japanese to get by if he happened to encounter someone who exclusively spoke Japanese, but he wasn't fluent in the language. This was fine for Ashen, since he had very little knowledge of Japanese as a whole, especially considering that he originally came from mainland Kapernia, where Anglo-Kapernian was the dominant language.

After about a 20-minute drive, Bruno and Ashen arrived at the Asahi House, where they went inside to have dinner. Ashen wasn't into sushi, but the Hibachi grill made up for it. In addition to serving sushi, the Asahi House also served things like steak, chicken, and pork...often flavored with Japanese-inspired sauces and spices, such as Teriyaki sauce, for example. This was fine for Bruno as well since he wasn't into sushi either. He preferred the taste of steak or Teriyaki Chicken over raw fish any day. The interior of the Asahi House had wallpaper that made it look like the inside of a Japanese forest, with special LED-lighted backdrops that simulated sunrise and sunset. Each table at the restaurant had a Japanese lantern as the centerpiece, with an LED light inside to simulate there being a candle in it.

The couple soon sat down at a table and ordered dinner, with Ashen ordering the Teriyaki Chicken, and Bruno getting a ribeye steak for himself. Then, while their orders were being filled, Ashen and Bruno had a little bit of time to talk to each other. Ashen had seen Bruno before when he was an athlete in the All-Kapernian games and was a bit curious to know what it was like to be a part of them.

Bruno began to describe how it was to be a part of the games, knowing that he was one of thousands of athletes from all over Kapernia to get the chance to participate. He described how he had to work hard to get to the games, going up against gazelles, rabbits, and other races that were more agile than the average Akita would be. Bruno also described how the regional trainers thought that he didn't stand a chance in the games, let alone how they didn't expect him to be able to qualify for them, given his size. However, Bruno was determined to succeed. He wanted to be a part of the All-Kapernian Track and Field events after he was inspired to do so by the legendary Jack Williams...a male poodle from mainland Kapernia that competed in the games when Bruno was a pup.

Ashen curiously listened, hearing how Bruno described meeting Jack in person on a visit to Yokai City several years ago. Jack had told the young Akita pup that no one believed that a poodle could be agile enough to compete against the likes of gazelles and rabbits in the hurdle events, but he proved all of them wrong by winning two gold medals, and then winning a silver medal in the 200m dash later in the games. This inspired Bruno to get into the competition, and much like Jack, he proved those who doubted him wrong by winning three medals in his only appearance in the games. Bruno also described what happened to him during the pole vault and how it ruined any hope of him competing in future All-Kapernian Games, and how his rehab from his injury inspired him to start his own health club.

After talking for a little while, Bruno decided it was his turn to ask Ashen about his life, since Bruno knew absolutely nothing about Ashen's past. Ashen explained how it was growing up being blind, also describing how his parents rejected the offers by surgeons to give him optical implants to cure his blindness. They wanted Ashen to succeed in life, but they also didn't want to see their son suffer from the pain of having cybernetic optical sensors grafted onto his eyeballs...especially at such a young age. Ashen didn't have a problem getting through life. His parents helped to guide him along and he worked hard in school, learning to overcome his disability and become successful at his job with Faiafokkusu Corporation. His co-workers saw him as a valuable part of the team, and so did his supervisor.

It seemed as if both Bruno and Ashen had a lot in common. They both overcame long odds to succeed at life. This made Bruno feel more comfortable around Ashen, since he could relate to what Ashen went through as a kid. After this, the two of them continued to talk about mostly small things for the next several minutes before dinner arrived for the two of them. They had their dinner, as well as a bit of dessert afterwards, with both Ashen and Bruno feeling full afterwards. Following their dinner, Bruno took Ashen out to the northern coast where a soft northerly breeze blew in from off the water. The moonlight of Articqua beamed down from above, giving everything a soft bluish glow, including Ashen and Bruno.

As they stood on the boardwalk a few feet from the water, Bruno looked over at Ashen and felt some conflicting emotions going through his mind. On one hand, Bruno was grateful that he found someone who was interested in being around him for more than just fame, and it made him feel very happy. On the other hand, that happiness was manifesting in another way as well. It was a house that was fit for a former All-Kapernia Games winner, but it also seemed like an awful lot of house for someone who lived alone. There were two unused rooms inside the place that Bruno hadn't done anything with yet, plus a second bedroom that was furnished but sat empty. However, he left that room the way it was since he had a younger brother and sister who lived in the Yokai City area. They would see him every once in a while, and maybe spend a night or two there when they weren't at the apartment they shared over by the Sakura House, where his sister worked.

Although Ashen couldn't see the interior of Bruno's home, he was aware that it seemed expansive around him, having a lot of room. Perhaps at some point Bruno considered having a family of his own, but didn't feel like pursuing a female partner...or maybe he would be willing to have sex with a female to reproduce, but he'd want to raise the kids that he would make along with the male partner he chose.

Bruno walked alongside Ashen through Bruno's house, letting the human male explore it a little before Bruno started to get a little curious. Although he did his best to behave himself, Bruno still felt his doghood throbbing inside his pants, spurred on by what Ashen had told him a little earlier. He was eager to see what Ashen had in mind, but wanted to wait until Ashen felt like he was ready to do it.
