Bread is the Burd

Coulias rolled over in his nest, stretching out wings and legs as he yawned. The day was still young, and he was recovering from a rather intense dream that he was having, wherein he had tried to eat a friend of his that grew in his belly and gave him quite the bulge, one beyond his capabilities. Of course, that was no nightmare. The thought of being heavy with a belly full of friend was always a pleasant thought to Coulias, since he loved carrying them around inside him.

Still, he knew it was time to get up and start his day. As always, he slept in a bit longer than he would have liked to and the sun was already high in the sky, so he knew that the best fishing and hunting was already behind him. Luckily, he had quite the stash in the cave attached to his nest upon the side of the cliff. His home allowed him to look over the snow-capped tips of the many trees splayed out before him in the valley, which made him feel like the apex predator in the region.

In truth, he was a bit of a softie most of the time. Just loved to cuddle and preen and enjoy the company of his prey. He was quite nice most of the time, even when eating for sustenance. Nature may have been cruel, but he was not. Ravenous, but not cruel.

With another extended yawn and a stretch of his wings, he shuddered and shook off the last bit of sleep from his beak and eyes, licking at the roof of his maw to moisten his mouth. The yellow and blue gryphon glanced down over the valley that he called his home and hopped up onto the edge of his nest, prepared to take on the world. He was about to leap into the skies, but then remembered his goggles! He didn't dare leave his home without putting on his goggles!

The gryphon pounced back into the cave adjacent his cliffside nest and scrounged through his belongings until he remembered that his goggles were up on a rack, a safe place for them. In fact, he put them there every day, so he felt like internally poking fun at himself for his temporary lapse in judgment. With a chirp, he wiggled the straps to the goggles around his head, placing them over his eyes before returning to the ridge of his nest to continue on with his day.

He was prepared to start for real this time.

A sudden gust blew at him, ruffling his feathers to make him feel like he was an aerial baron or a warrior! He felt awesome, regal, and dominant all at once, and above all else his eyes were untouched thanks to his goggles! No watery eyes for him!

With that internal boost of confidence, he leaned forward and leapt out over the forest, spreading his wings to catch that breeze that had ruffled his feathers, using it to stay aloft and glide above the treetops without flapping. He was ready to take on the world! The valley was his oyster! All he needed now was for a friend to show up so he could show how much of an apex predator he was!

And that's when he remembered that he was expecting a guest! Somehow it had slipped his mind in his early morning grogginess, but the thought of having a friend for lunch reminded him that his friend Orion - or Ori, for short, a small orange, black, and cream colored gryphon about the size of a housecat - was expected to show up this morning! Perfect for Coulias, for he was feeling the need to feed, and Ori had been a dinner guest to him many times in the past.

Of course, this meant that he needed to be back at his nest to greet his friend when he arrived. Though he was sure that Ori could find his way to Coulias' home, it would be more fun for both of them if Coulias was there, waiting and curled up to greet him. He was, if nothing else, a gentleman bird at heart. He wanted to show his travelling guest all the right hospitality of his home valley!

He tipped his wing to veer left, gliding high above the tips of the trees so he could return home, and that's when he saw it. Well, more like heard it. Off in the distance by the river, he heard the sound of a flock of ravens attacking something! The familiar caws of the corvids was unmistakable, and it drew the attention of Coulias almost instantly. He was curious to see what they were attacking. He knew their kind were bad for keeping grudges, and were known for seeking out any cats that had successfully hunted any of their flock members and making noises around them to keep them from sleep or hunting. Real bastards, but also quite amusing for Coulias since he had gotten along with them for so long and had never been the subject for their attacks or campaigns to nullify his stealth.

He quickly dove beneath the treetops to land next to the running river constricted by the ice forming at the shores. Winter was in full swing, but the river was not yet frozen over, which was perfect for him since he still liked drinking. Though his mind was focused on the ravens or crows that were causing a fuss for some unlucky soul nearby, he couldn't help but lean down to steal a drink, lapping at the crisp, cool water to fill his belly. He loved to slosh it about in his gut as he flapped, so he drank a bit more than he would normally have done so he could wiggle and hear it splashing in him.

But then, as he was taking his gulps from the stream, a tiny orange, black, and cream colored gryphon burst through the trees with two dozen ravens all diving and maneuvering through the trees and bushes to catch him! It was Coulias' friend Orion, and he had apparently done something to upset the flock! This was one situation where Coulias needed to get involved one way or another.

The gryphon didn't want to become a problem for his corvian allies, but Ori was a better and closer friend, so he knew what he had to do. As Ori led the crows and ravens upstream, Coulias bounded after them and chased them through the brush on foot, diving and leaping through the thin layer of snow that blanketed the forest floor until he caught up with them all in a clearing where they'd pinned Ori down. His friend was covering his face with his wings to keep the flock from pecking at his eyes and snout, but it wasn't doing much since the birds were clever enough to poke at his belly and rump, forcing him to move his talons and wings to protect other parts of himself.

Coulias knew there wasn't much he could do to dissuade the flock from attacking without hurting them, so he did the one thing he knew would scare them away without inflicting any damage. He spread his wings and called out a series of crackling lightning bolts to shock the snow around them in a series of sparks and violent cracks of thunder!

Instantly, every single one of the offending corvids leapt away and flew to the treeline amidst a series of drawn out cawwing calls. They were defeated, at least for now, but Coulias felt terrible about having scared and threatened them, even if it was to save his friend.

He trotted up and patted Ori on the shoulder to let him know he was safe, but Orion flinched and lashed out in defense with his sharp front talons to sever half a single feather from the larger gryphon's chest, only to realize a second later that it was in fact his friend, Coulias.

"S-sorry about that, I didn't realize it was you!" He apologized vigorously. "Do accept my-"

"It's fine, Ori! I couldn't let those bullies take advantage of you!" He leaned down to nuzzle at his friend, using his beak to gently prod and preen at Ori's flank. "Come on, we'll take you back to my nest and we'll get you some delicious fish to make up for it." He turned and spread his wings, but was stopped by Ori, who seemed a little distressed.

"I can't, at this moment. Those pesky crows got my wing and made a mess of my wing feathers. I can't fly, at least not until I get this looked at and fixed." He extended one of his wings, showing that, indeed, the crows had done a number on the flight feathers there, and he certainly wouldn't be able to get any lift out of them no matter how hard he flapped. More likely to barrel roll right into the ground.

Coulias knew this was bad; or at least it would be if Coulias hadn't shown up. Luckily for Ori, Coulias was much larger than he was and could carry him to a safe space to give him the attention he deserved and needed. "You'll be fine. Come on, get up on my back and we'll go up to my nest." He then crouched down onto his belly with his head extended outwards, giving Ori easy access to straddle his shoulders and settle in between his wings. "Now, hold on tight, because it's going to get very rough in a moment!" He stood back up with Ori on his back and spread his wings, leaping into the sky.

The two couldn't chat with one another while flying, because the wind was whipping at the both of their ears, forcing them to lay flat and focus not on each other but the current of the air around them. Additionally, Ori had to clutch tightly onto the feathers upon Coulias' spine and neck, and was in fact clutching so hard that his talons were lightly stabbing at the larger gryph's flesh through the down.

This didn't bother Coulias one bit, as he was a rough apex predator who could handle a bit of talon abuse from his prey. Especially if his prey didn't yet realize that he was lunch.

Both of them kept quiet as Coulias flapped and glided his way back to his nest, pumping at the frigid winter breeze with all his might to get enough lift to end up high enough. The air was so thin at the altitude he lived that returning to his nest was always a bit of a task, especially if his belly was full of churning water and there was another, smaller gryphon on his back. Still, he persisted, flapping and angling his body to catch every updraft he could manage en route to his cliff side nest and cave.

With one final glide and flap, he landed delicately on the perch jutting out from the side of his nest, only to have Ori immediately leap off him and start trying his best to preen at his own wing feathers. It was very, very important to keep one's flight feathers in order, and even those few minutes of disarray on his wings must have been his own personal hell. Coulias knew this, so he hopped off his perch to offer his beak.

"I can help you with that." He insisted, leaning down to nuzzle at Ori's back between his wings. He gave a gently preen, rubbing the hook of his beak between the pairs of feathers nearest his wing shoulder, lower jaw quivering to vibrate a bit and better work at the smaller gryphon's feathers.

Orion melted in place, eyes rolling back in his head and feathers all relaxing as all four limbs settled him down onto his belly in the gryphon nest. "Yes, that's quite nice." He admitted, lightly rolling onto his side to better give Coulias access to his damaged, haphazard wing feathers.

Coulias didn't need to respond farther, he just sidled up next to his friend and smiled as he systematically ran his beak tip through every pair of feathers on his friend's affected wing. In between strokes, he strummed up some conversation. "So tell me, Ori, what exactly did you do to upset those crows? Or were they ravens? I can never quite tell the difference."

Orion extended his wing a bit to give his friend a better angle, gently purring as he did so. "Well, I'm not exactly sure, if you want me to be honest." He flopped over onto his back and kept his wing extended, ensuring that Coulias could continue to preen at his feathers from the under side.

"Really? Are you sure?" Coulias asked with a bit of a sly grin, still preening. He pressed his talon down onto Ori, holding him in place as he leaned in closer to his body, preening at the chest feathers and nuzzling at his belly a bit. "Because I know you, and I'm sure you did something."

"Honest, I didn't do anything!" Orion protested. "I flew past them en route to your nest, and they started cawwing and screeching at me like I'd somehow offended them. I screeched back to let them know that I didn't appreciate their sass, and they started chasing me!" Though he was defensive, he was also in bliss as Coulias continued to pay attention to him and give him the preening he needed.

It was clear, however, that Ori wasn't being completely honest with his friend. Coulias could see the subtle twitches and aversion of one's gaze, which told him he was outright lying about this if he couldn't make eye contact while he spoke. Regardless of that, Coulias wasn't the type to interrogate, so he lightened the mood instead of prodding. "Are you sure it's just that? I mean, look at you! You look like a loaf of bread!" He scooped Ori up in one of his front talons and held him up to face height, still lightly nuzzling and preening at him. "Smell like one, too!"

Ori pulled his wings up tight and hissed. "I do not look like a loaf of bread!" He countered, not angry, but faking irritation nonetheless. He had heard that joke before, mostly from Coulias.

"What are you talking about? Look at the color of your feathers! Nice and golden brown on your back and wings, a lighter color on your underside. Burnt black beak. You look like a loaf of bread! I bet those poor crows were just hungry and thought you were a flying loaf of bread!" He used his talons to lightly caress at Orion's belly, tickling him there to show he was being facetious, causing ori to giggle and twitch, kicking up at Coulias with his hind legs. Then, having sensed an opportunity, he gave Ori's leg a bit of a bite and a suck, his tongue cradling at the ankle and thigh.

"Hey, I told you I'm not bread!" Ori joked, pulling his foot out of Coulias' beak. "But you can totally keep preening if you'd like." His wing was more or less fixed now, having been adjusted and aligned by Coulias' affectionate preening. He was completely fine and restored now, but that didn't mean he was done being preened. While laying on his back in Coulias' palms, he melted and spread out, relaxing his feathers to let his friend have his way with him.

Coulias chirped happily and gave a gentle lick at Ori's chest, following it up by another preen as he rubbed his beak through the feathers there, lower jaw trembling and snapping lightly to part each feather individually. While he was buried in his friend's plumage, he continued to joke with him. "The more I taste, the more clear it is that you're not truly a raptor, like you say. Maybe chicken and waffles? Waffles are bread, right?" HE winked and continued to preen, this time burying his beak in between the underside of Ori's wing and flank, the warmth there proving to be quite intense. "Well baked, too!"

Rather than continue protesting Coulias' jokes about being bread, Ori relaxed himself fully and just let the larger gryph do what he wanted. The pleasure that came from a proper preening regardless of outside inspiration was always nice, and he could use it after having his feathers ruffled in such a way. While he remained laying on his back in both of Coulias' cupped palms, he smiled and shifted in place, settling in and gently parting his wings to better give access. Both wings deserved love, even if only one of them was disheveled and twisted out of order.

Though he wasn't tricked into dropping the subject, Coulias could tell that his raptor companion was done with the bread jokes, at least for now. Since he wasn't keen on pushing the matter too far for fear of upsetting Orion, he kept his beak shut and returned to focus on Ori's wings. He ran his beak up and down the limb from base to tip of one, returning back to his body by aligning each flight feather one at a time until he made it to Ori's torso. From there, he did the mirror act, by starting on the second wing by getting at his flight feathers first, working his way out to the tip, and returned by pinching and tasting the bone and skin and muscle there.

After having been properly massaged, Ori felt like he could perhaps loosen up a bit and talk again about his experiences with the crows. "I may have upset them." He said, cryptically playing the pronoun game with Coulias.

"What do you mean?" Coulias asked, still buried beak deep in Orion's plumage. "Who did you upset and how?" He was curious, but was definitely more interested and invested in the preening he was doing for and to his friend. Though he was listening for the answer, he was focusing more on the sensations of his beak passing through feathers and rubbing against the soft down underneath.

"Well, I guess it was a bit more egregious than it sounded at first. When I was coming in from the south, I dive bombed one of the flock - the murder, I think they call a group of crows - just to play around and show how much bigger and stronger I was without actually striking them. Seemed well enough at first, and the crows seemed more interested in screeching at me instead of chasing me, so I didn't bother with it much at first. Oh, and as for your earlier question, crows. They are crows, not ravens. At least I think so; I can hardly tell the difference myself, aside from knowing that Ravens aren't as common in these regions." He rolled and flipped and leaned as needed, ensuring that Coulias was never left wanting for feathers to preen or body parts to lightly nibble upon.

All the while, Coulias remained nuzzling in deep, going from one area to the next, never stopping at one location for long, for he knew that constant and persistent attention to the same bit of flesh would quickly numb him, or at least lessen the effect. He buried his beak under the wing, lightly chomped on each of his raptor buddy's thighs one at a time, gently tugged on his tail, nuzzled into the belly, and eventually pressed himself up against Ori's neck, properly cuddling while his friend talked, seemingly oblivious to the affections he was recieving.

"Either way, I guess I had it coming to me. The more I flew north, the louder the commotion became as more and more of the crows joined in. Maybe they were warning each other of my little prank or something? I don't know for sure, but when one of them flew up to harass me about it, I kinda clawed at them to get them away. Didn't mean to hurt him or anything, just wanted to let him know that it wasn't okay to be bothering me. After that, dozens of birds came from the trees to chase me, and that's where you met with me. That's where you found me, running from them." He seemed remorseful, but still was barely paying attention to what Coulias was doing.

Thanks to that distraction, he hadn't noticed what the larger gryph had begun to do. While he was admitting his cheeky jest that caused the corvids to gang up on him, he hadn't realized that Coulias had nibbled his way down to the tip of his tail, using his tongue to slurp up the end of it and start to swallow him. Bit by bit, Coulias made his way up the length of tail right to the base, where he nibbled and pecked at both of Ori's hind legs, preening each one as best he could with a mouth full of tail before gaping wide and pulling both in tight enough to fit in his beak.

From there, he used the hook of his upper beak to continue prodding and teasing at Ori's belly, the sides of his maw cradling both of the smaller burd's legs in close, ensuring that he couldn't wriggle or writhe out, his gullet forming a funnel to his belly starting at his gaping maw.

It wasn't until he felt a tongue cradling his rump end and teasing at his flank feathers that Ori snapped out of his story to realize that he was half lost in the beak of Coulias! He immediately panicked, flailing about and grabbing at the edges of Coulias' beak with his front talons while his hind legs kicked and pressed out against the soft flesh. "Wh-what are you doing?" He asked, voice aflutter.

Coulias didn't respond, at least not verbally. He instead closed his beak to clamp shut with just enough force to keep Ori locked in his maw. He smiled and glanced down over his crest to lock eyes with Ori as his tongue started to curl and undulate in patterns, caressing and massaging the smaller bird's back and haunches all at once. From there, Coulias also cradled both of Ori's wings with both of his palms, ensuring they didn't get caught or snagged on the crook of his beak on the way down. He didn't want his friend to be hurt on his trip to the stomach!

"Okay, seriously, Coulias, what are you doing?" Ori stopped resisting or flailing, but did tense up and press his hind paws up against the roof of Coulias' beak to dissuade him from swallowing any more of him. However, when Coulias gulped again and used his tongue to dislodge Ori from his place, he lost his grip and his feet slid down into the cave-like gaping gullet of his friend. "C-Coulias?"

By this point, Coulias was too far gone to stop, as his beak was starting to be slathered in an excess of saliva that dripped down onto his nest. He felt the bulge of a bread-like lump of bird pressing down against his tongue, and it had triggered his predatory instincts that made him lightly bob his head forward in brisk, jerking motions as he gaped open his beak and tried his best to slide up on Ori's body, gulping and squeezing his tongue up against Orion with every motion.

There was a hint of panic deep inside Ori, as he was not prepared or initially willing to let this happen to him. He was still somewhat distressed from his encounter being mobbed by the crows, so being prey was the last from his mind at this time, but that didn't mean he wasn't fond of offering his body to Coulias for a quick meal from time to time. They had done this many times before, and had grown quite keen on their burgeoning predator-prey relationship. However, it wasn't often that Coulias was drooling so profusely; Ori could see the slimy mess of saliva coating the underside of his friend's beak, dripping down and around while also soaking his feathers through to the flesh.

Had Ori truly wished to not be eaten, he did in fact have a safe word he could chirp out in order to halt Coulias from his predatory ways, but his protests were mostly for show. The warmth and comfort of his friend's maw and tongue were quite pleasant, and he had no true desire to deny Coulias even if he wasn't in the mood. As such, he smiled and relaxed, wiggling down against the writhing tongue while slowly releasing his grip with his hind leg against the roof of Coulias' maw, in turn letting him sink and slide down the open gullet with ease.

Coulias could have clamped his beak shut around Orion then and there, gulping once to be done with it, but he wasn't that sort of predator. He wanted Ori to enjoy himself, to be comforted, and to be cozy first and foremost! With the smaller bird cradled lightly in his gaping beak, he slowly shut his maw off and started making gulping motions, his tongue rolling in waves underneath Ori to slowly ease him deeper and deeper.

Things went slow at first, with Coulias rolling Orion around in his gullet without actually swallowing, further soaking Ori with his copious saliva - at least what wasn't drooled out onto the ground. He could feel the bulge of his friend tossing and tumbling about, threatening to slid down his gullet with every few rolls of his body before a gently bobbing of his head and a twist of his neck shifted Ori around in just the right way that his hind legs, haunches, tail, and hips all slipped just past the slightly more firm cradle of Coulias' lower beak, the bulge pressing out against the gryphon's throat.

This did as it would normally, by triggering Coulias' more predatory instincts once again, this time making him clasp his beak entirely shut while gulping as hard as he could. His tongue curled up past Ori's wings and gripped at the bird's shoulder, constricting around his neck to tug him down into the dark red abyss before him. Then, with another big gulp, Coulias threw his head back and twisted his neck, forcing Ori down with a pleasant, throat-tight lurch!

This wasn't enough, though, as halfway down and into the crop, Coulias stopped his friend from slipping all the way down into his belly with his hand. He kept gulping and bobbing his head to better squeeze and clench around his prey, the flesh of his gullet churning his buddy around while alternately clenching and releasing, which in turn actually flipped Orion around so that his beak was facing downward while his legs and tail were poking out Coulias' maw, a gooey trail of slime trickling off the end of it.

With that, Coulias decided it was time to finish his friend off - at least for now - so he could relax and have a nap! He reared back and gaped his maw open using his tongue and throat to swallow the last of his friend, his gullet flesh gaping to let gravity do its thing before clenching down and forcing Ori past his crop and right into his belly, filling him up nicely.

Content and satisfied, Coulias licked his beak clean of the thick layer of his saliva that soaked him, pawing at his cheek to wipe away the mess, his other paw kneading into the nest below him. His brunch was subtly shifting and pressing out against his belly, a pleasant massage from within. In response, he patted his belly and smiled. "I hope you're nice and warm in there, buddy! Much better than the frigid cold of this chilly air!"

Though the day was still young, and Coulias was far from exhausted, he had no problem flopping over on his side as he chirped to himself, getting comfortable with his head resting on the ridge of his nest. It was time to go back down for a nap; he would see his friend again that night, where they just may end up having another delightful meal together.

Ori could be the loaf of bread! The appetizer!
