Luma sat up on Brooke's bed, stretching her limbs and twitching her right ear. Her new trainer was nowhere to be found, and she was too afraid to hop down and venture into a house she knew nothing about.
Fortunately, Brooke pushed the door open a moment later. She had on a gray t-shirt to match her leggings, and she'd straightened her hair. "Oh, you're awake. It's noon now. I was just telling my parents about you." Brooke put on her sneakers and walked to her. "Come on; I'll take you down to the malasada store."
Luma tilted her head and wore a curious expression. She had no idea what a malasada was.
"Ehm... You'll see. I'm sure you're going to enjoy it." Brooke reached her arms down toward Luma, and she padded over to Brooke, allowing her to pick her up and take her into a sunny Malie City.
Luma gazed at people walking. She wasn't used to being around such concentrated civilization but felt safe in Brooke's arms. Luma peeked inside of busy stores as they passed them and at other pokémon with their trainers. She also caught whiffs of food from various restaurants, which caused her stomach to growl.
"There it is," Brooke said as they approached the store from the south road. Sweet malasadas weren't sold in Malie City, so Brooke would have to let Luma try a bitter one.
They entered the store, and Brooke waited behind a short line before ordering at the counter. "Hi, just one sour, please. She's never had one."
"Oh, she'll love it." The female employee grinned. "Two hundred pokédollars."
Brooke reached into her pocket and handed her money in exchange for the doughnut. "Thank you." She walked back outside. "I'll tear it so we can both have some." She held Luma's body with her left arm while unevenly ripping the malasada down the middle. "Here, just bite it." Brooke held the smaller half in front of Luma's mouth.
Luma took a small, delicate bite out of the bread. Its bitterness brought her to shiver, but it didn't taste half bad.
"Like it? The sourness will take some getting used to. That's why I prefer sweet ones. I'll take you to Hau'oli one day to try it."
Luma was more concerned with taking another bite out of her half of the malasada.
She stared at it, and Brooke giggled once she caught wind.
"You're adorable." Brooke held it to Luma's mouth again and let her finish the rest. her phone vibrated in her pocket after Luma finished, so she had a free hand to answer and held it up to her ear. "Oh, hey Parker... Yeah, I'm in front of the malasada place with Luma... Sure. Meet us at the community center in like ten minutes." Brooke hung up and slipped the phone back into her pocket. "We're going to go see the person who caught you." She grinned at Luma and gave her a light kiss on the head. It took them minutes to arrive as they weren't far. Brooke finished her half of the malasada on the way.
She sat on one of the green couches in the building with Luma sitting next to her while waiting for Parker. Brooke saw him enter shortly, and to her surprise, he had Vix walking beside him. "Oh, is he listening now?"
"Just a little. It's like he's spontaneously changing or something."
Brooke wondered if it had anything to do with her. Vix still seemed rough around the edges and unapproachable as she looked at him. She didn't for long and set Luma beside her on the couch; then stood to greet her Parker with a tight hug, which he returned and kissed her on her cheek.
"How's it going with Luma so far?" He glanced at the young vulpix while she curiously looked around the center, soon fixated on what the mounted television was playing.
"Amazing, I'm going to spoil her a bunch." Brooke grinned warmly.
"More than I spoil you?" Parker playfully poked her side.
She smirked a bit. "Mmh, I don't think that's possible."
"Speaking of that, it's been a while since we've been out. Why don't we go to the High Roller? Unless you have something else in mind. I know you spend almost every day there."
Brooke smiled. She wouldn't object to that. She never got tired of sushi. "I'd love to." It's too bad they wouldn't get her half-off discount. It only applied when she was either on the clock or on break. It was kind of dumb.
They strolled south for a mile before reaching the high-class restaurant, entering with their pokémon and being seated by a host. The High Roller's welcoming environment and adorned interior brightened anyone's day. Its floor and walls were made of polished wood. The restaurant was separated into two sections by a small red bridge they had to cross, and stubby palm trees were planted scarcely among the walls, otherwise lined with beds of planted bamboo.
Brooke sat on the red couch-like chair across from Parker and set Luma in her lap. Every table had a thin pink and white checkered wall beside it for privacy. It always felt odd for Brooke to sit at a table to be served here instead of waiting them.
Vix stayed put beside the round table while Parker scanned the menu. "Get anything you'd like, Brooke. It'll be on me this time."
"Awe, you're sweet. Is it okay if I get something small for Luma as well?"
