Road of Mistique; Chapter 5: Two worlds colide
Katrin and Mistica meet at least, driven between a rock and a hard place. Some cooperation is needed, trough Mistica doesn't trust Katrin any more than Amberheart. They have no choice now to face an uncertain future together.
“You call me strange, and yet you can't even speak proper draconic” Mistica gazed at the young green dragon, she really ought not to interact with him too much, if it weren't so sad that a dragon couldn't even speak draconic.
“But what is so bad about that!? It is a barbaric language!”
“It's not here. Let me show you” Mistica cleared her throat to speak draconic. “Hello, my name is Mistica.” Trough the green dragon covered his ears and huffed in distress at Mistica.
“No, I shouldn't listen, it's bad,”
Mistica's voice became frustrated, her tail was swaying behind her if the restraints allowed it to sway back and forth. “It's the language of your ancestors. You know, free dragons. Speaking draconic means you claw back some of the freedom you have lost!” To add power to her words, she stamped on the ground.
“Mistica,” another voice interrupted her before she could continue. “Just give up. You are not free, we are not free. We all will never be free again. That speech of yours only gets humans angry at us, and angry humans hurt us” It has been the same voice who first saved Mistica from the ramblings of the young green dragon when she first came here. But now was acting more like an stuck up old arse, to Mistica's opinion.
“They already hurt us Börh, They keep us locked until we are needed. If we look different at them, they will hurt us. However, if we took charge, we can easily make our own rules. Our own destiny.”
Börh poked his head over the stable door opposite to Mistica to look at her. He observed her with a suspicious look. “You mean you want to have us be tortured to death or haunted by werewolves? I aint buying your freedom, not when the humans see us as things. Despite if we are things according to the humans we hardly can do something wrong. If we make a mistake, it is our rider's fault. If we become individuals, we would need to arrange food for ourselves!”
Mistica opened her mouth, flabbergasted, listening to the reasoning of the dragon. She just did not quite know what to say. “Is your brain pudding or something” She let fall in her draconic tongue. Oh, how she was lucky she could swear at the other dragons in needed in draconic and they would not hear.
“Is your brain being stunned by river eels or something? Do you honestly believe in yourself? They don't protect you, they see you as an item and thus will abuse you however they see fit. I am not an item, I am not a thing. A free dragon is a proud dragon. I carry my name with pride. You only have a name because your rider gave one to you. Mine was given by my parents. I hatched in the arms of my father. And grown up under the guidance of my clan. To give up would be dishonest to my mother, my father, my elders and my mate. She must be worried sick by now.”
Börh looked a bit taken aback for a moment, looking at Mistica and inspecting her. “But if you are mated to a dragoness...how do you get eggs? "
Mistica squinted her eyes back at him. “Off all the things, you are worried about me getting eggs? Thanks for the condolence that according to you I will never see her again. But since you are oh so wise, what should you do in my position?”
Börh seemed to think a lot but, nothing at all. Trough he did not reply instantly, and that gave the green dragon finally a moment to chime in. “Do you think you will be free some day?”
Mistica nodded “Certainly.”
“Can I be free?”
“Theo!” Börh exclaimed, sounding a mix of offended and hurt. “That is the talk that gets you executed. There are dragons who would rat you out instantly. Perhaps not here since we are the only three dragons in waiting, but outside, in the corps. They will talk to their riders.”
“Unless... I teach you draconic, then only free dragons can learn from you. And even if you can't be free of the bounds now, you can be free of mind. A free mind can never be truly enslaved. Thats why I got the Lieutenant to speak my name, my real name not what they would assign me too.”
“You two are going to get us all in trouble.” Börh exclaimed tiredly and retreated himself from the conversation. Trough, the younger green dragon, was still listening to her. And thus Mistica took it upon herself to teach him at least the basics of draconic. With a little luck, they still had a while for one dragon to be taken outside to have a rider trying to select their mount.
Her 'class' did not last long as Lieutenant Amberheart came into the stables. “Okay, listen up,” she spoke to a group of stable hands and handlers. “We have two dragons outside today, the young green one and the older orange one. Mistica stays in her pen today on accounts that she has officially burned through all recruits we have.”
A handler's hand raised up “Lieutenant, I am sorry but who is Mistica... It's almost like you mean the she-demon. But it doesn't have a name yet, since it has no rider.”
Amberheart gave a quick look at Mistica, who had placed her head on the stable and licked her teeth in front of the humans malignantly. The Lieutenant tried to hide her worries trough Mistica could smell it between the more fearful scents of the other humans.
“Because we are dealing with a wild dragon. All your training is for human raised dragons. Mistica, she well demands more respect. I suspect that's why no one tamed her yet. Now you have got your assignments. Dismissed,”
“I can smell your fear,” Mistica teased the lieutenant a bit. She snapped around and gazed at the black dragon. She came close and whispered.
“Yeah, and what about it? You are a terror and you know it. Two of my recruits are still in the infirmary with broken limps after that last stud you pulled. I care about my recruits even when I have to be hard on them. I don't wish them death.”
“I thought the point of the corps was to die.” Mistica's mental voice was laced with acid.
The lieutenant raised her hands above her head. “Mistica, please, just not today. I have a recruit coming. Derick is trying to undermine my authority. Can't you just be co-operative for one day?”
“Any day I am co-operative means a day I become less free. I co-operated with Derick, and now I am here.”
Amberheart snorted, amused. “You? co-operating? I heard about your two escape attempts by now.”
“And if I hadn't broken my wing, I would try one again. I might talk to you freely, but forget not, Lieutenant. I see you as my captor and my enemy.”
“Then why don't you just burn me or something and try to flee? You know if you have your keys, and you have shown that you are smart enough to use them. "
“Because murder would be counterproductive for now. Despite, in contrast to Derick, you give me good meals and even make sure I am as comfortable within the chains as possible. Admit it. You see me as equal to human. "
Lieutenant Amberheart remained silent for the stable to be empty. Soon enough, she slid the doors close and locked them before looking at the dragon again. “And what if I did?”
She received a toothy grin from the dragon. “Then my mission is successful, for if you see me as equal, see other dragons as equal. I don't see you speak to other dragons. Yet you spend your time nowhere with me.”
“Look Mistica, you are a small dragon, I have to make sure you are alright and grow a bit. "
Mistica growled deeply, letting the Lieutenant's bones reverberated with her growl. “I will never grow. This is who I am. I am an adult dragon who will never grow larger than a teenage dragon.”
Amberheart scratched her chin. “that does not bode well for us, all this effort and nothing to show for it. But why are you telling me this? You see me as your enemy? I don't understand. One moment you are acid to me, you are the terror of my career. The other moment, you almost act like my friend. Why?”
“Because, as an enemy, I want you to fear me. I want you to know I am a dragon capable of defending herself with every single fibre in my body. But...I am lonely. These other dragons, they are tame, they don't share the fire I have. They don't understand to be free thinking, but you do. And yet you have not punished me for thinking free, unlike Derick.”
It was then that lieutenant Amberheart's face pulled white on Mistica. “Oh god, what have I done” she gasped. “I have ruined any chance to tame you.”
“And so you have. And so I will fly free one day.”
And so the lieutenant left Mistica. She regained herself and got her colour back when she was at the door of the stables. She turned around to look at Mistica one last time before leaving. Mistica was now alone in the stables, no dragon to speak to, no other thought in her mind. She cleaned her body for so far the restraints allowed herself too.
She was disturbed when two humans entered the stables. “Derick,” she growled when the awful scent waved into her stable. That the humans could stand his reek was a mystery to her. Next to him was the Lieutenant who was rather silent to her now.
“Now dragon,” Derick started “You have been a horrible dragon for so long, but today you will take a rider.” he gripped his rapier by instinct. “Or else we might have to think of an alternative way to pay for you to be here. We can tie you up at the breeding grounds and have every dragon mount you. Trough, since you are a beast, that would be welcome, I guess. No longer having to suppress those feral instincts of being fucked.”
Mistica Slowly leaned her head the door to her stable. “Well, look what ape the cat dragged in.”
“Beast,” Derick swore and whipped her snout again. “Now get her to the field, next to the other dragons. I want them to see her being tamed as an example.”
Mistica let out a hiss of pain. Oh, how she would sow them. Her eyes turned to murderous intent. She could see the worry Amberheart had in her eyes. What ever happened, today she would show her teeth to Derick.
She struggled the whole way she was carried to the field. Many a recruit where on the field, looking her in distrust and even fear. Most of them still carried the bruises from their interaction with her. Though there was one recruit out there. Her outfit looked like that of Lieutenant Amberheart but better maintained, and she still had doubt and fear in her eyes. She did not smell like the other recruits. Her scent was faint compared to the others, no dirt and grime. Even her suit seemed shiny. Well, this was going to be interesting.
Mistica snarled when she was tied up to test the recruit, who took an instinctive step backwards. She wondered trough, why this was the day that she would be tamed, when the recruit was obviously a recruit. Perhaps the recruit trained somewhere else? But why the fear? She took another whiff of air. Sadly, Derick's horrible scent was overpowering her nose, though she thought she could smell something other about this one. And then it hit her that this was a human lady, where all the other recruits were male. This was even more interesting.
“Remember,” Lieutenant Amberheart started. “This dragon has resisted all conventional means of training and accepting a rider. This dragon is wild and has a history of hurting anyone who got close. Lady Endora, I would say go with your gut.”
Katrin gazed at the black dragon and then at the other two dragons. How could this dragon be such a terror? She was barely larger than that green dragon and that was supposed to be a hatching still. The orange dragon was far larger but was trained and was accepting its third rider some time soon. Katrin gripped her rapier and pulled it in self defence. Instantly the dragon hissed and she could see large bulky muscles move under those scales.
“Okay, you don't like this thing” She sheathed it again and unclasped the belt that kept it around her middle. It fell to the ground and the dragon instantly stopped hissing. Rather looked at her with curious eyes. There was something behind those eyes? It was observing her, judging her. Was it intelligent? Well, it could talk, just like other dragons. But was it mimicking intelligence or really intelligent? But those eyes, those amber-red eyes of the dragon, were looking into her soul and it made her both queasy and interested. She saw dragons near the court for sure, but none so full of fire as this one. None had that look in their eyes. That one look where she looked at her like Katrin only had to make one wrong move and she would be set a blaze.
When the blade hit the ground, Mistica's instinct to kill subsided a bit. This was the first recruit to even consider dropping the blade. Was this part of that unconventional training they talked about? Did Amberheart spill the beans about her longings? Was these humans just different? The human in front of her still did not dare to move closer, despite that everyone, even the two other dragons, were watching her.
“Nice dragon” she suddenly called out, resulting in a laugh going over the field.
“Nice human,” Mistica replied, mocking her, too. Mistica received a startled jump from the human.
“My name is Katrin Edora,” she spoke again, trying not to have the laughter of the humans get to her. But Derick shouted at the human. “What are you waiting for? Tame that dragon”
“No.” Lieutenant Amberheart said and turned to Derick. “We do it at her pace. You have nearly made Mistica kill two of my recruits. If you can't behave i ask you to leave.”
“So Mistica” Katrin latched on to the name “It's nice to meet you Mistica” She took a single step closer to the dragon. Mistica lowered her head a bit to get a closer look at the human.
“What are you even trying to do here, human? There is no fame and fortune with me.”
The human came closer still. She did not stop until the warm breath from Mistica's breath was flushing over her skin. Then she whispered not to have anyone else here.
“I have no choice. Please, don't kill me. "
Mistica could hear the fear in her voice and the reek of it coming from her. This was the first time a recruit actually asked for this and did not dominate her. Mistica inhaled the scent of the human, with her so closer she finally could properly smell the human. She was still young, yes, and she smelled out of place. Even Lieutenant Amberheart, who often smelled like rose-water, did smell like her. She had no scent of dragons up on her herself.
“I will not if I don't have to.” Mistica spoke, “But tell me, child, why do you have no choice?”
“Because If I don't become a rider, I bring shame to my family. This is my only change, the only one I have.” Katrin did not know why she talked to the dragon, but that dragon's voice. The feminine voice drawn to her, like she had known Mistica for a long time and she was just talking to a good friend. Slowly, she raised her hand and placed it on Mistica's nose. There they kept standing for a moment before Mistica spotted her own moment of weakness and growled. She shoved Katrin away with her head.
Katrin tumbled backwards across the ground and landed at Lieutenant Amberheart's feet. The recruit gave another laughter at this clumsy display. Trough, with a single shout from Lieutenant Amberheart, they were silenced. Even Mistica had to admit she had to resist the urge to recoil.
“You are all a disgrace!” She boomed out. “Laughing at the only recruit that even managed as much to get close to the black dragon. Let alone touch her in the yaw. A part you are all too scared to even conciser to approach.”
She turned to Katrin. “Rider Endora,” she extended a hand to help Katrin stand on her feet. “Your methods are unorthodox. Some might call them amateuristic, but you have succeeded where many have failed. So I am going to schedule you in for training together with your new mount. Welcome to the corps rider.”
Katrin felt dizzy from the news. She expected to be sent back to her father with this display. She shook Lieutenant Amberheart's hand before looking over her shoulder back at the black dragoness who she was now bound to. The dragon bared her teeth with an impressive display of aggression.
“Everyone dismissed, Stable hands, Rider Endora, let's get Mistica back to her stables.” The Lieutenant turned to Derick again. “And you. You have what you wanted, a wild dragon with a rider. This has fulfilled out contractual obligations. So now get the hell out of my facility. "
Derick just gave a yellow toothy grin back at the Lieutenant. “Oh certainly, but Amelia, you will see me soon enough. Perhaps next time I have those stables of your filled with dragons again.”
Mistica followed Derick with a burning gaze while the stable hands were working on getting her harness under control and making sure she could not just run off. She was guided back to the stables with her 'rider' and the lieutenant walking in front of her. Mistica kept tugging the ropes that restrained her, occasionally pulling a stable hand with the rope and making them trip. She stopped at the opening of the stables and just stood there while everyone tugged on the leashes and ropes that were tied to her body. Mistica just simply took a deep breath of air and looked around one last time before letting herself be guided back into the stables.
“Rider Endora, please pay attention to how the stable hands tie down your dragon. You are expected to know this in the future, as well as exempting the straps in the future.”
It prompted Mistica's 'rider' to take a more intimate gaze with the straps and how they were attached to her muscular body. “Isn't this uncomfortable?” Katrin asked, pointing to how some of the leather work was denting Mistica's heavy plate scales.
“Perhaps, though I have little doubt that anything loser would cause Mistica's escape,”
“While any bound placed up on me is uncomfortable. These straps are often painful,” Mistica answered in honesty to both her captors while pointing with her snouth to twou bounds that where pinching her scales.
“Well, we could...” Lieutenant Amberheart started. “Loosen them a bit, right?” Katrin finished the Lieutenant. Resulting in the two of them looking at each other.
Lieutenant Amberheart started. “Did she just speak to both of us?”
“Yes, I did. It's more efficient that way.”
“But Mistica, dragons can only speak to one person at the time! That has been proven. No one could speak to multiple at the same time.”
“Besides Mathew, He can speak to multiple dragons at the same time.” She didn't notice what happened, only that there was a sudden burning sensation on her snout and the crackle of a whip through the air. The sudden shock she was whipped by Lieutenant Amberheart made her forgot the pain that the whip caused on her snout. Instead, it tipped her into a fight response, scaring what stable hands there were left away from her. Not wanting to be an receiving anger of whatever anger Mistica was holding now.
“We are not speaking that name in my stables.” Lieutenant Amberheart said in a cold, controlled voice. A voice that had an icy calmness to it. “I can tolerate your stubbornness, your constant threads because that is what i would have done in your position. But that name. No.”
Mistica gazed with the fury of her eyes to Amberheart. “What did he ever do to you to anger you so? He hadn't hurt a fly.”
Amberheart stepped closer to Mistica. “IF he didn't fly away with his dragon and those four other dragons. My Nina would have still been with me. If he hadn't done what he had done, he would have made life easier for so many dragons. Now, every single time someone is kind to a dragon, people talk. He causes this. This is not open for debate.”
“Sounds something that is more the fault of humans than fa... Mathew, he and Thyna would have been killed if they stayed here.”
Amberheart took another step closer to Mistica, staring straight into the black dragon's eyes. Unimpressed by the dragon's behaviour, though, she was too close to use her whip. Using her rapier was an option, but seeing how Mistica reacts to them, she did not want to chance it.
“No more of that heretic, and I am not talking about that. He ran away. I am talking of the sin that he committed with his dragon. Now no more worth of him again, and if I hear anyone speak of him again, I will punish them until their scales or skin bleeds. Understood, that includes you, Rider Endora.”
Katrin suddenly jumped up, wide eyed. “Wait, so if Mistica does something wrong, I get punished. "
“Yes.” Amberheart turned around to proceed to the door. “And Mistica, I know you can hear me, so I take your silence. You understood me.”
Mistica kept staring at the door opening until Lieutenant Amberheart left. She was not the first that broke the silence in her wake. Instead, her 'rider' was the first to speak to her. Looking up at Mistica's face as she swung her head to pay attention to Katrin.
“What was that all about?”
“I figure my father had made a wise decision to leave as fast as possible.”
“Your father?” Katrin raised an eyebrow while looking at Mistica. “Is one dragon who left with you know, him?” Mistica shook her head, letting the light catch on her black scales and red swirls.
“No, my father is Mathew.”
Katrin's mouth dropped at the news. “No, that can't be true. How could a dragon and humans even get a child?”
Mistica couldn't help herself but to grin at Katrin's confused look. “Do you want to know the graphic details? Would it be enough for me to say that they fucked a lot?”
“Okay, gross. What with the three gods, Mistica? "
“Its reality. I am the living proof that dragons and humans can feel love and even can successfully get a child together.” Then came closer to give an even bigger grin. “And what is best about this is that you can't really tell anyone, since from what I figure from Amberheart's reaction, talking about this will get you executed.”
“why are you all dropping this on me? What have I ever done to you, Mistica?”
“funny, the lieutenant asked me the same thing. So I will give you the same answer. That I accepted you as a rider was not much of a choice for me. Since Derick clarified, he had plans if I did not. So I had to 'accept' you as a rider. That doesn't mean that I actually accept you. You are still simply another human who keeps me trapped in here while I could be home. Back at my clan, where my love would be.”
Katrin sighed and dared to come closer to the stables. “Perhaps it will help trust if I told you a secrete you can't tell anyone too.”
“If you plan to do something...don't announce your plan to me. Now I know you just do this to build trust.”
Katrin pulled on a wry smile. "And perhaps I tell you also to build trust.” Then she dared to come even closer, be in the short distance to Mistica's ear-hole to whisper. “My secrete is that I don't want what my father wants. I don't want a husband. There, now you know mine, too.”
She received a snort from Mistica. “You say as if this is some big, live ending secrete. I think any girl at some point wouldn't want what their father wants. My clan elders want me to be the next in line for the matriarch, but I am going to disappoint them.”
“Mistica, you don't understand. I like women.”
“What is not to like about women?” Mistica smiled warmly. “Trough, I doubt you and me have the same like in women.”
“you mean, you... want women? And I mean... feel sexual things for women.” Katrin turned to a bright red. Mistica kinda felt sorry for Katrin. Even though she was one of Mistica's captors, that someone who was certainly ripe to have sex was not even comfortable about doing so saddened her.
“it's called being a Lesbian. Or well, that is what my Elder Evy told me. I am not sure if I am one myself, but my love is a lady just like me, trough warmer than me and i am not ashamed about it. Unlike you, I see. You are so red. You look like one of those tomatoes my father used to bring home.”
Katrin looked around to make sure she was alone again, before letting her hand slide to the lock holding the stable door close. “Mistica...do you mind if I spend some more time with you?”
“... It would be nice to have someone other than Lieutenant Amberheart to talk to. Besides, if you mother doesn't talk to you about sex, well guess this dragon has to do it then.” Then Mistica spotted how the mention of the word mother send shakes over Katrin's hand while she opened the lock and door to enter her stables. She closed the door behind her but did not lock it, so she had a way to escape.
“Mother being a sensitive subject?”
“Yes, Yesterday I learned that everything I knew about my mother was a lie. That she did not die of childbirth, but in battle as a rider.”
“So you are here to pick up her legacy instead of the choices that you want to make?”
“No, I am here because my father decided it was the only opportunity to regain more family fortune and status.” Katrina sighed and leaned against the door of the stable. Looking at the dragon that was tied up in her leather and chains. “Honestly, I feel locked in my choice. "
Mistica snorted a growling laugh.
“What is so funny, dragon?”
“The irony in your statement is funny. You confess feeling locked up to a dragon who you keep locked up against her will.”
“Its not like I can just set you free.”
“Why not?”
Katrin threw her hands in the air. “Because they do you have any idea what that would mean? You most likely wouldn't even make it to the edge of the kingdom before you will be caught again. And even if you escape, i will be punished, destroying my whole life.”
“And yet, you put your own needs about my needs, because that is what you fear is currently happening to me. The only difference between us two, I don't give up and I will fight.”
“I am not giving up the fight, but there is no way to go. I am trapped here, like you. But my bounds are not chain and leather. But that I am only a barely considered adult, a lady-in-waiting without a husband to give me status.”
“You are staring another option in the face. "
“You?”
“Me. Why not flee together? "
