A Furry Story

Written by: Ashura L. Kusanaga

[Author's Note: I'm sorry for the delay on this story, but the laptop I use had a small malfunction that left it unusable for about four months. Needless to say, I hope you all enjoy this chapter.]

My dreams had become filled with hurting, pain, and death. But also life, but always in the end.

I worried about these enigmatic dreams, and wondered what they really meant and why they plagued me. I hope I would find out soon. And I hoped that it didn't come true. In the mean time, it will soon be Sam's date in about a month or less. And then there's Kacey and the hope that Sam doesn't find out about her pregnancy, and hope that Kacey doesn't have a miscarriage.

It was very windy and rainy one night.

"What should we name the cub, Ash dear?" Sam asked me that night. This was typical of her. She always seemed so cheerful dispite our situation. Our parents had given up hope, and the police were still searching but losing interest as well as patience. Our lies had them looking all over, and nowhere near us. There was something else nagging at me though, besides the pregnancies, and the dreams. I pushed it out of my mind and thought of more cheerful things.

There was a knock on the door. Kacey set down her knitting, and got up to get the door. Kacey had strangely taken up a hobby of sewing and knitting.

"I'm not sure, honey... maybe you should decide" I said while laying on the couch with Sam laying on top of me.

Kacey opened the door, and after a few quiet exchanges of words, she led the stranger in. A tall human, about my height, with brown eyes and dyed two tone hair: black with red tips.

"Nathan!" Sam exclaimed.

"The name should be 'Nathan'?..." I said, as she got off of me.

"Who?" said Kacey as she gave a warm towel to the dripping wet stranger. Sam shook her head as she walked over to the stranger.

"Samantha?" the human stranger whispered.

"Guys, this is Nathan, my friend from my hometown!" she said looking at us, and than back at 'Nathan' to give him a big hug.

"Sam, is that really you? You've been busy I see... you've grown big! I can't believe my luck of running into you out here with these two fur-suiters!" Nathan said, hugging Sam tightly but gently.

Kacey and I exchanged disturbed glances at each other.

"Fur-suiters?" Kacey whispered low to me. I shrugged, and got up, all the while Sam releasing Nathan from his hug. As she stood next to him, I made my way over.

"Nathan, this is Ashura, my... mate" Sam smiled big looking up at Nathan.

"Are you the lucky father? Wait a sec... Ashura?... where have I heard that name before?... I know! Are you the same Ashura from Texas?! That famous artist?!" Nathan looked in awe as he put out his hand to shake my paw-hand.

"No, I'm not him... I'm not from Texas... besides I don't draw nor am I an internet Furry" I smirked.

"..." said Sam.

"Who's this one?" Nathan said, looking disappointed.

"This is Kacey, she's a good friend of ours" Sam explained.

"Nice..." Nathan nodded approvingly. "Is she a Wah? She looks like one, especially with those markings." Kacey shook her head no. At that we all sat down, on the couches and chairs. There was an awkward silence as we all sat there.

"So, Ash... may I call you 'Ash'?" Nathan began. I shrugged.

"So, Ash, where'd you get your suit?" he asked.

"Here and there" I replied. I knew he couldn't be this dumb. He had to know that Kacey and I were Furries.

"Oh, and who made it?" he asked sitting forward.

I looked back and pulled out the shirt's tag to read it, "...'Hanes'..." I said smiling, putting the tag back. Kacey giggled quietly, and it caught Nathan's attention.

"No, I mean your Fur-suit, who made it?" he tried again, ignoring the giggle.

"Nathan, I just noticed something... where are your glasses?" Sam spoke up.

"I lost them while I tripped in the woods" he blushed. I knew something was funny about his reaction to us.

"Damn it, Nathan" Sam whispered low. Kacey got up, and went to a back room, saying only, "I've got an idea, be right back".

After a few moments of more awkward silence, Kacey came back with what appeared to be a drawer of glasses, reading glasses, spectacles, and monicles.

"Before I show you some glasses you could use, I want you to know, that we're not what you think, Nathan" Kacey said, handing him the drawer. One by one he tried each one until he said he'd found one that seemed the closest to his glasses' prescription. All the while he was looking down. But when he looked back up, and took one good look at Kacey and I, he fell off the couch in shock.

"You-you-you-you-you gu-gu-gu-guys are rea-rea-real?!" he stammered, while Sam helped him up back onto the couch.

I stole a sidelong glare from Kacey, and smiled.

"Yes, we are very real... what?... you've never seen a real Furry?" I asked. He remained as quiet as a rock, and trembling, shook his head "no".

"There's nothing to be afraid of Nathan" Kacey said getting out of her chair and kneeling next to the frightened human.

"I always suspected that you guys existed but only as-" Nathan began.

"Dreams, ideas, stories? Yeah I get that from those I've told" Kacey said reassuring him by stroking his black and red hair. He didn't recoil like I'd hoped or thought he would, but instead calmed down, and reached up to gently touch Kacey's face. Kacey smiled and let him.

His reaction was unlike any other I anticipated, which was continuous random light poking.

"No, I'm not a dream, Nathan... no seams, no zippers, no velcro, nothing fake... not even my tail is fake" Kacey murred, as she pulled his hand to touch her face fully. He couldn't believe his eyes, I could tell.

"I'm not sure what to believe now" he said.

"In time, you'll understand, Nate" Sam hugged him again.

Surprisingly, he took it well, and with his calmness, came the questions. However, this was never an easy thing to talk about, even to a human, let alone a fellow Furry.

"So it was a few years back that they perfected the process?" Nathan muttered. Sam, Kacey, and I nodded. We all fixed up the living room so that he had a place to sleep- naturally, all we did was convert the couch into the bed. After that, we settled into the kitchen to talk and have a few of Kacey's no-bake cookies. Earlier, a topic had been on my mind, and I had simply dismissed it, but it was resurfacing. I had to hold it back however, as it didn't seem like anything to talk about around the girls. So later, after the conversation was over, and the girls had gone to their own rooms, I stayed awake to talk to Nathan. He was part of my thoughts earlier. It seemed that the girls were right about something months ago... psionics. One of them had said something about being psychic, and for some reason, before Nathan came to the house, I knew he was coming... or... at least that someone was coming to the house. The other part of the thought was something that Nathan seemed to know about, but was hiding. I knew I had to ask him, before I either forgot, or lost my nerve.

"So, you gonna sit there all night and stare into space, or go to bed with one of the girls, or do you want to talk about something? Cause you sittin' there is beginning to freak me out a little, no offense" Nathan said, reclining on the couch-bed, thinking of something.

"Nathan?" I spoke up. He nodded.

"Sup."

"I've been thinking about something... and it has to do with you... kind of."

"Shoot."

"When I first met Kacey, she mentioned something about being psychic... are there... er, is there such things?"

"I dunno, I never really thought about it... I suppose they're real... what made you think about that? And what does it have to do with me, Ash?"

"..."

"Go on."

"I... knew you were coming, even though there were no calls, or letters, or anything... I wasn't even looking outside before you came, but yet I knew you were coming... is that strange?"

"Kind of..."

Nathan yawned, and folded his fingers under his head.

"Is that it, Ash?" Nathan asked.

"No... I have more questions..." I said. I was a little suspisious and i had every right to be if you really thought about it.

"Like?"

"How did you find this place?"

"I was lost, and found it by luck."

"But from our hometown?"

"Yeah."

Something smelled fishy, and not like our dinner before Nate got here, but... something else.

"Tell me, something..."

"What?"

"Why were you out in this storm? Why were you not still at home?"

"What? What do you mean?"

"I mean, Samantha and I ran from home several months ago, but why were you in these neck of the woods? Were you camping?"

"No."

"Did you run from your home?"

"..."

"Did you?!"

"Not... not exactly..."

My blood turned cold.

"Were you sent here?" I asked getting ready for anything.

Nathan looked at me. He was quiet, and his eyes were trying to tell me something, but I couldn't tell what.

"I wasn't sent here..." I calmed down as soon as I heard this, but he still had that look in his brown eyes. "I don't know if you know this, but,,,"

"If I know what?"

"...War..."

The word escaped his mouth, and as soon as the word registered in my mind, the only thing out of my mouth was not anything normal, but sounds reserved for moments like these, when you know what was going to be said next, and the only sounds you could make are: nothing; something unintelligent; or short, quiet, unbelieving screeches.

"What?" Nate asked, seeing my expression.

"I know what you're gonna say..." I managed.

"That the war was caused by you and Sam? How'd you-"

"I don't know how I know, but... I do..."

"I didn't know that she was the great niece of our country's Secretary of Defense... until earlier this week."

"That's exactly what I knew before you said it."

I heard a few foot steps on the carpeted floor. Soft ones.

"Ash, it's late, I'm sure Nathan wants to go to sleep... Ash, come on... wait!... honey, what's wrong?" Kacey asked, immediately sitting down next to me, and shaking me.

I was in shock, so I heard Nathan tell her what we knew.

"What?!" she exclaimed quietly as she heled her paws to her muzzle.

"She never told us..." I said to noone in particular.

"Why would she have told us anyway? It's not everyday conversation" Nate said then sighed.

"I'm sure she had a good reason to not talk about it" Kacey reasoned with us.

"So what now?" I asked.

"Come to bed with me tonight... and tomorrow, we four will talk about it together" Kacey said, pulling on my arm.

We all went to bed, but none of us could really sleep, especially me. I didn't know if I really could... knowing that I was responsible for the outbreak of war among us and humans. Eventually, sleep came, but it was filled with the same shapes and colors as usual these past weeks. Pain, death, and life... what did they mean? Why were they a common theme in my dreams? It was like my dreams were trying to tell me something, but they never made any sense like they used to.

In the morning, after my dreams had stopped, and I layed in bed trying to wake up, I felt a violent shaking.

"Ash, Sam's gone!" Kacey yelled. I snapped awake and jumped out of bed, uncaring of normal clothes. I was only in my boxers. It had been a while since we three were anything yiffy, so I figured I could have some boxers on underneath for a change.

"Sam!" I yelled as I burst through the front door. The word just echoed through the morning air, and no responce came for me.

"Samantha! Where are you?!" Kacey called out, as she came out the door as well, uncaring of whether she hid her pregnancy or not.

"Sam!" Nathan called out, as he was already outside.

We all waited for any reply, but none came.

"Ash?" Kacey began to cry. I went over to her quickly, and put my arms around her.

"We'll find her, don't you worry" I comforted.

"She's like a sister to me, we must find her as soon as possible!" she sobbed.

'Sam!" Nate shouted.

"We'll split up and look for her, stay right here" I said, running into the house. I grabbed my shorts and my shirt as well as three radios.

'Here, we'll use these" I said handing one to them both. "When one of us finds her, make as much noise as you can, and we'll find that person who found her. Now, head out!"

I took off into a run into the woods, and while searching, kept in contact with the others every minute or so.

"Buzz-crackle... I... fizz... her!..." came Kacey's voice over the radio, not but five minutes later.

I quickly followed the sounds of her shouts and yurfs, and almost tripped going down a small steep hill, following her voice.

"Ahh!" Sam cried out. There Kacey was with Sam in her arms as I came to a running halt.

"What's wrong with her?!" I panicked. There didn't seem to be anything wrong on the outside of her. Kacey smiled, and looked down at a nearby spot on the ground.

"Look, Ashura, look!" Kacey said using a free paw to point to a liquid on the ground near Sam's legs. My panic turned into happy relief. Sam's water broke! Nate came running up, looking very worried, even though we found Sam.

"Turn to channel sixteen! Quickly!" Nathan panted. Kacey picked up her radio, and she and I turned ours several notches to channel sixteen.

"Team leader Alpha Bravo... we've spotted two anthropomorphs headed in the forest, over... commander Tango Charley, that's a ten-four, over... request to search and capture, team leader, over... that's a go, commander, over... will do, team leader, over and out..." buzzed the radios.

"Fuck!..." we exclaimed.

"Er!" Sam grunted.

"Quickly, there's an undergroud passage around here as a means of my dried food storage and medical supplies" Kacey said, helping Sam up a little. "Nate, grab her other side, Ash you keep a look out with your senses... I trust you with your nose more than his."

Nathan got Sam's other side, and we made our way to the underground tunnel.

"Not much further, guys" Kacey huffed and puffed. "Anything, Ash?"

There was a whirling sound of helicopter blades in the distance.

"Hurry!" I shouted. Then it hit me. Literally, something had hit me. But I ignored it as a branch.

"There it is!" Kacey sighed, still helping the anguishing Sam to the shelter. "Ash? Where are they now?"

I stumbled a bit, and couldn't respond. Kacey turned around, and gasped, as did Nathan.

"A tranquilizer dart?! Oh man!" Nathan said.

"Don't worry, I'll make it, just keep going to the shelter!" I said past the numb feeling slowly overtaking my body.

"Ash, hurry!" Kacey shouted.

I tried to speak, but nothing came out. And then I felt another hit me, and I fell to the ground.

"Ash!" Kacey yelled, but I couldn't hear her.

"Go..." I yelled weakly. "Cubs... more... import... tant... go... go!"

Then my body stopped crawling forward, and I saw Nathan and Kacey make their way into the hidden, and nearly invisible opening of the shelter.

"I love you" Kacey said muted, as she closed the door.

"We lost one of the anthropomorphs... but we've found the other one, team leader, over" I saw a human with a painted face say muted. His other soldiers had guns pointed at me, lethal and non-lethal.

"This one looks exactly like the other four we got in the Arizona lab... Docter Adams' facility I believe, sir...' said one of the silent soldiers.

"That's where this one's going too, soldier" replied the muted commander.

And then... another dart hit me, and my vision turned black.

[Author's Note: This is a crappy ending to some people, but it is not over yet. With time, perseverance, and a lot of imagination as well as sleepless nights, I'll get another chapter out. Hopefully, this one was enjoyable, and hopefully the battery in my laptop in which I type these doesn't die, so I can write another one. With your suggestions, which some I've used in the past, there will be another chapter.]
