The Space Between Us: Chapter 5
Rex, my best friend, my roommate – an anthro wolf battling his primal nature. And me? A human with a hunger I barely understood, drawn to the danger he tried to hide. In a world that condemned us both, I made a choice: to awaken the beast. We built a twisted sanctuary, his dominance a mirror for my deepest desires. I thought I was in control. I was wrong.
How far would you go to be loved, even if that love is forged in the fires of your own destruction?
"The Space Between Us" is a dark, psychological exploration of internalized prejudice, toxic masculinity, and the solace of surrender in a world that demands we deny our true selves.
The dove is dead. But from its ashes, a phoenix might rise. Witness its birth.

Chapter 5 - The Void
Silence.
Not peaceful. Oppressive. A thick blanket smothering the room.
Sunlight, harsh and unwelcome, sliced through the blinds, painting a stark line across the rumpled sheets. My eyes snapped open, disoriented, the remnants of something fractured clinging to the edges of my awareness.
I lay on my back, tangled in the sheets, every muscle aching — a dull, throbbing reminder. My throat was raw, my jaw sore. My mouth… empty. A hollow ache mirroring the void in my chest.
Across the room, Rex’s bed was empty. He was already up, of course. Always moving.
He stood by the window, a statue of grey fur and muscle in his workout clothes. Grey sweatpants clung to his thighs and calves, a tight black t-shirt stretching across his back. Even from here, I sensed the tension coiled in his frame, the rigid set of his shoulders, the slight tremor in his hands.
He hadn’t spoken since last night. Since… that.
Nausea, cold and sharp, washed over me. Shame. Fear. And beneath it all, that treacherous flicker of… longing.
“Rex?” My voice, hoarse and unsteady, cracked the quiet.
He didn’t respond. Didn’t even flinch. Just stared out the window at… what? The quad? The early morning joggers? Anything but me.
My heart hammered, a frantic bird trapped in my chest. Say something. Anything.
I pushed myself up, wincing as the stiff sheets pulled against my skin. Every movement, a physical echo of his touch, his weight.
“You, uh… going for a run?” I asked, the words pathetically weak.
Still no response. He shifted, weight transferring from one leg to the other, but he didn’t turn. The quiet stretched, taut and agonizing.
I tried again, forcing a lightness I didn’t feel, a desperate attempt to bridge the chasm that had suddenly opened between us. “Want me to make coffee?”
Finally, he moved. A slow turn, his amber eyes, usually warm, now… cold. Distant.
“No,” he said, the word clipped, a dismissal. He didn’t look at me, his gaze flickering past, over my shoulder.
“Oh,” I mumbled. My hands, clenched into fists, trembled. “Okay.”
The quiet stretched, thicker now, pressing down. The sunlight seemed to intensify, highlighting the wrongness of it all.
He turned back to the window, shutting me out. “Just… go back to sleep, Finn,” he said, his voice flat. “You look… tired.”
Tired. Was that all he saw? The exhaustion, but not the… everything else? The fear, the confusion, the desperate, aching need?
“I’m not…” I started, then stopped. What was I going to say? That I was broken? That I needed him to… what? Acknowledge it? Apologize? Hold me?
The words died unspoken. He wouldn’t understand. Not anymore.
He reached for his running shoes, his movements jerky, uncoordinated. He didn’t look at me. He didn’t see me.
And in that moment, something shattered. A fragile hope, a desperate illusion, crumbling into dust.
He was gone. The Rex I knew, the Rex I… loved… replaced by this… stranger. This cold, distant… wolf.
And I… I was alone. Utterly alone. In the quiet, filled with the ghost of his scent and the crushing weight of… what we had done.
Nausea washed over me. I closed my eyes, trying to block it out. But they were there, lurking just beneath the surface, waiting to consume me.
Had I pushed him too far? Broken something?
And a darker, more dangerous thought… had I wanted to?
I squeezed my eyes tighter, trying to shut out the… truth. It stared me in the face. The twisted desire, the… need to be claimed, to be possessed, to be… his.
I lay unmoving, staring at the popcorn ceiling. The rough, blurred texture seemed to mock me. Sheets tangled around my legs, pillow damp beneath my cheek. The only sound, my ragged breathing. The only scent… him.
I should get up. Shower. Eat. Live.
But moving felt impossible. My limbs were heavy, my mind numb.
Class. Intro to Lit. Dr. Evans. Something about… narrative structure. Irony. Foreshadowing. As if my own life wasn’t already…
Saturday.
Right. No classes. No obligations. No escape.
My hand drifted to my phone. The cold glass, a small comfort.
Porn. I needed to forget.
My fingers hovered over the usual sites. Anthro. Wolf. Knotting. All the keywords.
Not today. The thought was empty. Just going through the motions.
It wasn’t the same. Not after him.
Images, videos, animations… pale imitations. They didn’t have his scent, his heat. I’d tasted the real thing.
Maybe… stories. I needed a world to get lost in. Something to connect with.
“Wolf human…” “Dominance… submission…” “Alpha… beta… mates.” My fingers typed, tracing a path through the labyrinth of my desires.
Fanfiction. Short stories. Novels. A flood of links, but mostly fluff. Fated mates. Soul bonds. True love conquering all. Bullshit. That wasn’t it. Not for me.
I didn’t want that. I wanted the power. The instinct. And Rex… Rex wasn’t looking for a mate. He was… he was…
I closed the browser, frustration surging. Maybe there wasn’t an answer. Maybe this… this thing between us… was just broken.
No. A flicker of defiance. I couldn’t give up. Not yet. I had to try. Maybe… advice. Someone who understood. Forums?
“Interspecies relationships… advice…” I typed, slower now.
Articles. Support groups. And… there.
r/InterspeciesIntimacy.
A community for discussing the complexities and challenges of relationships between different species.
My finger hovered. Hope? Fear? Both. I clicked.
Okay. Deep breath. Just explain. Ask for advice.
I stared at the blinking cursor, mind a chaotic jumble. How to even begin? Explain this? To strangers.
My fingers hovered over the keyboard, trembling.
“I don’t know where to start…”
Deleted. Too pathetic.
I tried again.
“Last night, something happened.”
Deleted. Too dramatic.
“My best friend and I…”
Deleted. Too close to the truth.
I took a deep breath, trying to calm my racing heart. How to describe the indescribable? The fear and excitement, the shame and desire?
My fingers began to type.
“He’s… different. A wolf. And I’m… human.”
I paused, staring at the words. A simple statement of fact. But beneath, a world of meaning.
More words followed, fragments, glimpses of truth mixed with lies.
…always thought we were just friends…
…never thought he’d be interested…
…party…dare…bathroom…
…never felt…so small…
…he didn’t…
…mine…?
Help.
The words hung there. Raw. Exposed. Too much? Too little?
My gaze drifted to the title field. I took another breath.
Title: Need advice - Things got… intense… with my wolf roommate (M/M)
That sounded about right. Vague, but specific enough.
My finger hovered over “Post”.
One click. And it would be out there. For anyone to see. To judge.
Do it. A voice whispered. Ask. Find out. You need answers. You need… him.
[Posted to r/InterspeciesIntimacy]
I put down the phone, the sudden darkness of the screen a strange relief. Done. Posted. Out there.
Now… the waiting.
Don’t look. Don’t check. Breathe.
I got up, walked to the bathroom. The mirror reflected a stranger: pale skin, dark circles, a haunted look. Me.
I turned on the faucet. Cold water rushed out. I splashed my face, trying to wake up, to wash away the lingering traces of him.
Toothbrush. Toothpaste. The familiar ritual, a futile attempt at normalcy. Minty foam. Spit. Rinse.
My eyes drifted to the phone, lying silent on the bed. A black rectangle. A portal. Hope? Or despair?
Don’t.
I walked back to the bed, sat. Stared at the popcorn ceiling. Still there.
The thought of food made my stomach churn.
The books on my desk, still unread, seemed to taunt me.
I should do something. Anything.
My hand reached for the phone.
No new notifications.
Disappointment, disproportionate and crushing. It had only been five minutes? Ten?
I closed my eyes. Focus. Distract yourself.
A hot shower. Maybe that would help.
I stood under the spray, the water pounding against my skin, but it couldn’t wash away the ache, the emptiness, the need.
My thoughts circled back to the post. To the responses. To him.
What if no one replied? What if everyone thought I was… crazy? What if…
I reached for the shampoo, the scent… wrong. Not his musk. Not wolf.
I squeezed a dollop, the white blob somehow obscene. I scrubbed, the lather suffocating.
Check.
The thought, a command.
I rinsed quickly, hands shaking. Stepped out, wrapped a towel around my waist.
My phone. Waiting.
I grabbed it.
Three new notifications.
r/InterspeciesIntimacy.
My heart… leapt.
I clicked.

Sounds like you’ve got a real alpha on your hands. ;) What’s he like? Details!
[+] 12 [-] Reply
A real alpha. His alpha. The words sent a shiver down my spine, a mix of fear and… pride? Was that even possible? To be proud of this? Of him? I scrolled, needing… something.
[-] u/ConcernedCitizen22 • 11m ago
Are you okay? This sounds kind of concerning. Did he force you? Was there any pressure?
[+] 7 [-] Reply
Forced? No. He hadn’t.
There had been the dare. The expectation. But… I’d wanted it, too. Hadn’t I? To perform. To please him. A flicker of something in the bathroom. A spark. A surrender.
My fingers tightened around the phone. Throat tight. Chest hollow.
I started to type a response. A denial.
“No, he didn’t force me”
Deleted.
“I mean there was pressure, I guess…”
Deleted.
“I wanted it, too…”
Deleted.
What could I say? How could I explain? It wasn’t simple. It wasn’t black and white.
I stared at the blinking cursor. The empty reply box, a void.
I couldn’t answer. Not yet.
I scrolled, hand trembling. Another comment.

Dominance. Respect. Alpha.
The words swirled, mixing with the memory of the bathroom, with Rex’s scent, with the ache.
Submit.
Was that the answer? What I wanted?
A shiver. Not from the cold. Something deeper. Darker.
My thumb hovered over the collapsed comment. Why? What had they said? Something bad? Or something… true?
I shouldn’t.
But I had to.
[-] u/PrimalInstincts • 8m ago
Sounds like the faggot needs to learn his place. A wolf like that deserves to be worshipped. He should be grateful he’s even getting attention.

The words hit me like a punch to the gut. Nausea. Shame.
But beneath the shame, beneath the revulsion… a flicker. A spark.
His place. Worship. Grateful.
Was that it? Was that… the truth?
A tremor ran through my hand. Shallow breaths. A tightening in my groin.
Responding.
Air. I needed air. Out.
Jacket, wallet, phone — grabbed and gone.
The hallway was empty. Weekend quiet. Everyone elsewhere. With someone.
The thought stung. A sharp pang of loneliness.
I walked quickly towards the dining hall. The promise of food. Distraction.
But as I approached, the sound hit me. A wall of noise. Chatter. Laughter. Clattering plates. The buzz of life.
Other people’s lives.
My hand hovered over the door handle, hesitation gripping me.
Just get something to eat. You’re fine.
I pushed the door open.
The dining hall was crowded. Tables filled with groups, laughing, talking, sharing food, sharing life.
And there I stood, alone.
The feeling washed over me. Self-consciousness. Shame. Difference.
My gaze darted around the room, catching snippets of conversations, imagined whispers, averted eyes. I hunched my shoulders.
Keep moving. Don’t make eye contact. Just… get food.
Joining the line, I fixed my eyes on the floor. Tiles. Shoes. Anything but faces.
The line inched forward, torturously slow. Each step, a deeper descent into the sea of people.
I grabbed a tray, a plate, silverware. Their weight, strangely comforting. Something real.
Food. I needed food. But what? Nothing appealed, everything bland, tasteless.
I chose randomly. A sandwich. An apple. A cookie.
Just get it over with.
I paid, the cashier’s eyes neutral. Uninterested. Thank god.
Now… where to sit?
The tables were all full. Or almost full. Small gaps. Empty chairs. But claimed.
Scanned the room, heart pounding, palms sweating. A hunt. A desperate search for refuge.
There. In the corner. A small table. Empty. Alone.
Perfect.
Each step towards it felt louder, a further retreat from everyone else.
I sat. The chair, cold.
Unwrapped the sandwich. Took a bite. Chewed. Swallowed.
Tasteless.
My phone beckoned — a lifeline, a distraction, a potential connection.
The comments. The words. Waiting.
I opened Reddit, scrolling past the initial comments — the curiosity, the concern, the advice.
Further down, the debate. The conflict.
Two names, locked in battle.

His picture… a wolf. Of course. But not just any wolf.
A close-up. Head and shoulders. Fur the color of slate, of shadow, of night. Eyes… amber. Like his. Piercing. Intense. Predatory.
The wolf snarled, a silent snarl, frozen yet powerful. Teeth bared, muscles tense — a promise of violence, of power, of control.
My breath caught. Something forbidden, yet… familiar.
Read.

Exactly! You can’t just… ignore the issue of consent by bringing up the past. We’re talking about individual actions, not ancient history. And you, u/GreybackAlpha, you’re basically saying that if you were in that situation, you would have raped him!
[+] 3 [-] Reply
[-] u/GreybackAlpha (Wolf 32) • 7m ago
Rape? Is that the word you humans use when you don’t get your way? When your fragile sensibilities are offended? I said I would have taken what was offered. And believe me, little human, when a wolf wants something, it’s always offered. One way or another. We can smell desire. We can sense submission.
It’s a dance, little one. A dance as old as time. And you humans, with your rules and your laws and your… morality… you’ve forgotten how to move.

And let’s be honest, u/EqualityForAll, you wouldn’t be here, lecturing us about “consent” if the OP had been with some weak, hairless human, would you? You’re drawn to the wolf, to the danger, to the power. You fetishize us, even as you fear us.

You want us to be tame. To be human. But we’re not. We’re wolves. And we won’t be denied.

I pushed the plate away, stomach churning. The noise of the dining hall pressed in, a suffocating wave. I stood, shaky, and walked towards the exit.
Outside, the air was cold, sharp. A shock.
I should go back. Study. Sleep. Forget.
But I couldn’t.
My hand reached for my pocket. For the phone.
No.
I shouldn’t.
But I had to. Needed to know. To see.
I pulled it out, fingers fumbling with the screen. The light blinded me, for a moment.
And then… the words. The battle. Still raging.
I sat on a nearby bench, cold stone seeping through my jeans. Grounding, but not enough.
My eyes scanned the screen. Frantically. Searching. For what? For him. For answers. For more.

Two words. That was it. A command, and a… reward? Cruelty, simplicity, absolute power… It unmade me.
I stared at the screen, vision blurring. The dining hall, the noise, the people — all receded. Only this remained. This thread, this exchange, this… truth. A truth I had suspected, feared, and yes, craved.
Rex. He was… right. Strong. Powerful. Everything.
And I… I was nothing. Just a human. A… bitch.
Waiting. Needing.
To be claimed. To be filled. To be… bred. To be… his.
My hand, slick with sweat, tightened on my cock. Hard. A pang. Almost painful. But the pain… felt good. Real. Grounding.
I closed my eyes, head falling back against the cold stone, a low moan escaping my lips — a sound of surrender. And… a prayer.
Rex…
Sleep wouldn’t come. Hours passed, marked only by restless twisting in the suffocating sheets. My mind raced, a relentless vortex of images, words, feelings.
Rex. The thread. Her surrender.
I tossed, punched the pillow, but nothing helped. The darkness seemed to hum, shadows shifting when I wasn’t looking.
Breathe.
Useless.
My gaze landed on Rex’s empty bed.
Where was he?
With them? With… her?
A knife twist in my gut.
I got up, feet silent on the cold floor, and walked to his side of the room.
His desk, a mess, as always. Papers scattered, a half-empty energy drink… and his hoodie. Discarded on the floor, dark grey, almost black. The one he wore yesterday.
I bent, picked it up. Soft, worn fabric, still holding his warmth. The scent… him. Musk, pine, something deeper… wolf.
Clutched to my chest, the scent filled my nose. Relief, sharp and fleeting, quickly replaced by a longing so intense it felt like… drowning. A strange, twisted feeling washed over me.
No. Pathetic.
My fingers refused to release the fabric.
Just… a moment.
I buried my face in the hoodie, inhaling again, deeper. The scent filled me. Intoxicating. Escape.
My hand smoothed a wrinkle on Rex’s bedspread. Then, picked up a stray sock, placing it in his laundry basket. Small acts. Meaningless. But… necessary.
Shame flushed my neck. What am I doing?
The mirror: a glimpse of a stranger — pale face, dark circles, haunted eyes, lips slightly parted. Broken.
I looked away.
My mind drifted, back to the bathroom. To… it. To him.
His body, pressing.
Heat. Scent.
His growl.
My surrender.
The knot…
Eyes squeezed shut. Stop.
But there was nothing else. Only him.
Back on the bed. The hoodie clutched tight. His scent, a constant reminder.
A sound escaped, between a sigh and a moan.
Sunday.
Another day. Sunlight mocking me through the blinds.
I hadn’t slept. Not really. Just drifted through unsettling dreams — fragments of images, whispers of words.
His scent… still clinging to the hoodie. Now… my pillow.
I should get up. Do something.
But… what?
The books on my desk: unopened. Assignments unfinished. The future… a blur.
My phone. Silent. Dead.
I reached for it, hand trembling. Plugged it in. The screen flickered to life.
No new notifications.
Of course not.
Scrolling through my contacts, Rex. His name burned on the screen.
Should I call? Ask where he was? What he was doing? Who he was with?
But my throat was tight, my stomach twisted. Fear of… anger. Of the truth. I couldn’t.
So… a text.
Something casual. As if everything was normal.
Finn: Hey. You up to anything today?
I stared at the screen. Stupid. Pathetic.
Delete it?
Too late.
Sent.
And now… the waiting. Again.
The phone went face up on the desk. Waiting.
If he replied.
Five minutes. Ten. Fifteen.
Nothing.
I checked the signal. The message. Everything.
Still nothing.
The silence… deafening. A void, expanding.
My gaze returned the message, rereading. Again. And again.
Finn: Hey. You up to anything today?
Too casual? Too needy? Too… human?
Should I have apologized? For… something?
Everything?
He was ignoring me. Punishing me. Rejecting me.
And I… I deserved it.
Didn’t I?
The room was still, a silent, expectant space. Sanctuary or prison? It didn’t matter.
A click.
The key in the lock.
My heart stopped. Then, a frantic pounding.
The door opened. A sliver of light, a shadow… then him. Filling the doorway. The scent of him — musk, pine, something wilder — a physical wave.
He didn’t look, didn’t see me, moving past to his desk.
Look at me.
Please.
He grabbed his keys. The jingle, sharp in the quiet.
He turns. He’s leaving. Always leaving.
But then, a pause. A flicker. He hesitates.
A word. Dropped. Like a stone.
“Later.”
And then… gone.
The door clicked shut.
I stood there, frozen, clutching the hoodie. His scent… the only thing left.
And he… He…
Later.
He’ll be back. The thought, a whisper. Not a question. A certainty.
My fingers tightened on the soft fabric. I brought the hoodie to my face, burying my nose in it. Inhaled. Deep.
Musk. Sweat. The faintest trace of… that night.
A shiver. Not from cold.
My body… it remembered. The weight. The heat. The… power.
And a darker thought, slithering up from the depths: You’re nothing without him.
My breath hitched. A moan, almost silent.
He’ll be back.
And I’d be…
Ready.
Waiting.
His.
