Chapter IX: Around the World in Planes, Trains and Automobiles, Part One
Oh god we're in the thick of it
Chapter Nine: Around the World in Planes, Trains and Automobiles, Part One
Benji looked around as he clenched his bag, Martin still behind him as he grabbed his bag from the large spin cycle. He rubbed his eyes and took some of the crude out of it, hoping that it wouldn't evolve into something that killed him. He was barely sleepy, looking around the airport he didn't think it would get dark already but it still did.
Looking around the main lobby, he tried to find his ride, he was going to Washington DC in order to speak to the Outsider's head executive to see if he could borrow his assets and resources in order to track Bright across the country. He needed to find the shark and see where he went.
If the shark was nostalgic and or curious he might have visited Las Vegas; in order to see and test the team and or to view the site, see what had changed in the time and perhaps recreate what had happened before. He would be disappointed, there was not a single person named Twilight with in a three hundred mile radius of the town.
Yet as he looked around, he tried to find his ride. It couldn't be that late at night, that someone would have fallen asleep or forgotten about them. He then thought back to the flight as he remembered the time and what had gone on. It was one of the greatest sleeps he had caught in a period of four hours and then he realized that it might not have been four hours.
Pulling out his phone as he walked forward, passed a dashed line that signified where phone signals where blocked, suddenly six texts appeared on his phone and all of them from the agent that was supposed to pick them up.
“Where are U?"
“Are U here yet?"
“Fight Delay?"
“I can't stay for longer."
“Please text back."
“I have to go sorry."
“Shit." Benji said under his breath as he took in the six messages that were sent over what appeared to be over an hour. Turning around he realized that the plane should have still landed when he told the agent to pick them up. Ignoring Martin and walking forward, Benji walked to the front of the airport passing all the numerous buy bait and found himself in the front rotunda.
The shark looked down at the signage in the building and realized that his plane ticket was messed up. Pulling it out and comparing it to the sign in front of him, he realized that the only mistake made was with whoever ordered the ticket.
Reading the sign and his ticket, he knew where they were. The sign and his ticket told him they were in Olympia, Washington. Martin looked at the sign and came to the same conclusion as he was given the same information as well. Gasping he looked at Benji as he tried to find someone to blame as well.
“Who ordered the tickets, because I told you to do it, didn't I." Martin said as he talked to the shark in the front of the rotunda. Both of them were going to find who had the blame and were really going to bicker. Pulling a jacket out of his suitcase Benji walked forward and placed it on his shoulders as he tried to ignore Martin.
“Benji, what did you do?" Martin yelled at Benji as he clicked a button on his coat, the foam in the jacket expanding and gaining heat retention properties. Both of them exited from the airport as Martin practically chased down Benji, walking towards the parking lot. “Come on what happened."
Looking around, the airport was empty and Martin quickly flashed forward stopping Benji in his tracks. Martin tried to hold onto the shark as he tried to lose his grip.
“Oh come, I won't yell at you; what did you do." Martin said as he used his powers to hold Benji into the place and stop the shark. Benji started to laugh a bit and did he laugh. Martin had no idea what was so funny but Benji tried to keep his cool as the stress got to him.
“I gave the task to Isen, I gave the task to Isen. What the hell was I was thinking." Benji said as he put his hand on his head and looked extremely flushed. “We're in Olympia, Olympia Washington. We're on the other side of the country. I don't have any money, and no idea where the nearest bank is."
“You gave it to Isen, you had a one in three chance of giving it to someone technically competent and you screwed that one up." Martin said laughing as he wondered how Benji screwed that one up. Looking around they had no car, no ride and no way to do anything.
“We have no way to go home, we're trapped here." Benji said as he laughed a bit, his hand suddenly glowing as his powers activated and he reminded him of his ability. Martin held up Benji's hand and it was a set of car keys as if his body had conjured up a car for him to take.
“You just made a car key, how the hell did you make a car key?" Martin asked as he pulled it out of Benji's hand and looked at it. It appeared to be a complete and totally real pair of car keys. Looking around, Martin clicked the unlock button and on the other side of the parking lot, a pair of flashing lights went off.
“You must be kidding; I can't copy a complete set of car keys. I'd have to match the signal and the model; and should I have had to know the car to make it as well." Benji said arguing with his powers as he tried to find the reason for such an ability.
“So what, you still being given a freebie come on." Martin said excitedly as he ran forward, between the cars and towards their ride. Benji didn't trust what was going one and stipulated that there had to be some sort of catch with his powers. Still, perhaps out of curiosity and or a morbid death wish ran with Martin towards the car.
As he walked towards the end of the parking lot, he saw the car and morally he settled his complaints when he saw what car his keys had summoned. Martin looked at the supercar in front of him and wondered what kind of idiot would have let it unguarded.
Benji looked at the supercar and figured whoever he was “stealing" it from would be rich enough to buy another of these red beauties. Rubbing the red exterior and feeling its aerodynamic surface, he thought he might not give it back. He opened the door and looked at the interior and his eyes might have well popped out of their sockets.
“Am I interrupting you two? May I buy you two a room?" Martin said using the usual lines as he viewed Benji's attraction to the car. Looking in the backset, he found a duffle bag and as he pulled it into the front of the car he opened the bag.
“Well this is quite the turn around." Martin said as he looked in the bag and found a series of hundred dollar bills that had to be at least thick as the bag was wide. If did count right; there to be at least hundred thousand dollars with in the duffle bag.
“I know well then, I saw we get ourselves hotel room and take this back to Washington. Maybe bribe the Outsider's leader in order to say change BOO into the Boston Branch and give us our own underwater base." Martin said as his mind wandered with ideas on what they could do with the money they had.
“Oh I like you with greed in your soul. Oh We'll have to make sure Elliot stays in charge, she will take you down if you demote her." Benji said as his eyes widened with the possibilities of the situation. As they drove off towards the city, they remained inconspicuous to the device in the back of the car.
…
“Yes and you think we should use the BOO bases from now on, oh wait you want us to find a way to combine with the BOO. You are completely crazy, if I had some money I would completely bribe you right now." Elliot said from the underground room of the BOO headquarters. Luckily or Unluckily, Martin had convinced his leader to let them use the base as temporary storage area but if it wasn't hell.
She looked at the plain windowless walls, she loved her windows and skylights; being able to stare out into the ocean and be covered in the sun. How would she be able to keep her tan up now?
“Yes I do understand; I will do my best in order to follow these rules. Now then onto the main part, how long until we can have a fully functional water base again?" Elliot said trying to convince her superior otherwise of his decision.
“No, well then what about a skybase?" She said as she did a spin on her chair, she slowly was realizing how bad this situation was really turning out to be and she would be extraordinary lucky if she got a base with more than three windows. “No, well then you're saying I should feel lucky if I get a base on the ground."
Elliot was turning flustered, her face becoming red and her voice becoming feebler. She shivered in her chair and she was losing her cool, of course that would be, as in most situations, let out in a massive; all at once release. As the director let out another statement telling her how lucky to feel she felt a particular wave of anger coming over her.
“See your saying I should feel lucky, but something tells me that you haven't even ever gotten lucky before." Elliot said as she released a series of gibberish, insulting her superior with a nasty retort. “Yes I do know that you have a child, but let me ask you this have you ever heard of IVF, because your wife might have."
Elliot hung up the phone and knew that she was definitely going to be in trouble when he decided to call her again. Ignoring that a knock was placed on her door and it sounded like a box was placed next to her door. Waiting a few seconds for the agent to leave, she stood up and walked to the door.
Opening it she looked outside and picked up the box. Feeling it around, she placed it on the table and ripped it open. Inside there was a shit ton of packing peanuts inside and as she pulled them all out; she saw that inside was a simple letter and a tracker beacon.
As she opened the letter, it appeared to be from her old mentor. Looking at it and she wondered why he wanted to contact again. She wondered what he was going to do to her, periodically he popped in and gave her a few challenges and made sure she was up to date.
“Dear Elliot, my favorite student. As is seems I may not make it to the new year. As such, as I final challenge to you, I need you to find my last treasure. You will find a homing beacon in it that shall lead you to a duffle bag, which should be in a cave in the pacific rain forest. Beware though if someone else does dare to intercept this message and go after it. I fear demons are after me." The message read as Elliot knew what her master was doing, a tear ran down her eye as she could feel her master dying.
Reaching up inside of the box, she pulled out the beacon and below it their appeared to be a set of numerals. Entering it into the device, a large arrow appeared on her screen. Of course she would have to track it down instead of being given a map to the treasure.
However, this at least would help her. A large sum of money might help her save the Boston Outsiders and give them back their base. So she decided to start where anyone else would start, Washington State. She found it ironic Benji and Martin were going to deal with the Time Lord-ish Outsider Overlords, while she went off on a random adventure.
As she walked out of her room, grabbing her gun and keeping the beacon in her hand, she walked forward. Deciding to follow the rule of two she walked forward and knocked on the doors of Blake. Ignoring Isen and deciding to let him hold the base, she invited Blake to come along. However, she was worried who would want to take his treasure and why he or she was a demon.
Walking forward, she imagined the treasure the gold shining in her and Blake's eyes; gold fever had definitely hit them and whatever it took to get it they would face the risk and go for it. She imagined the kind of people that would be tough enough to make her master fear for his life and or his treasure.
…
“Oh great, look at this some stupid human has decided to go on a joy ride and steal our ride and our money. Isn't this just great Brightrock?" A demon said as it reverted from its large dark form into a disguised form, as normal as a human and unable to tell the difference from other.
“I would say Darkwater, no way we couldn't say track them at a moderate pace on a chase that would say lead us across the country." The demon named Brightrock said as he changed into the form of a demon-ish dog, strange tendrils coming off its body. It shook and groaned as it held in the tendrils and it looked relevantly normal.
The dog howled and it walked forward, gaining the tiny smell of the human. It ran forward, with Brightrock following it as he ran forward. Being a demon he was able to follow his “dog" at an elevated rate and would quickly track Benji and Martin.
…
“Well then this is the life, we are here, and this is the life." Benji said as he laid down in his bed, quickly taking out the hotels remote and turning on the TV. As it appeared the nearest motel, the one they were at only had one bed rooms so he and Martin would have to deal with that, not that he minded nor did he think the lizard would be that prude.
Watching the TV, he closed his eyes as his body was spread out against the bed. In the bathroom, Martin was taking a shower. The lizard took his mask off, he never did normally but as it appeared even his body was slowly becoming acclimated to the normal air pressure. Even after a year in the ground world, he could now take off his mask and only feel weakness.
He didn't want to tell Benji, he was still afraid of it going all wrong but even the Doctor recommended to lower the pressure of his mask. His lungs were becoming stronger and he now longer had to worry about puncturing a hole in his chest. He enjoyed the water on his body, cleaning the muck from an eight hour flight off his body.
He didn't know if Benji was normal or insane, so many deaths must have taken a toll on even a normal person and he wondered if he was willing to forgive Benji for what he did and move on in his live. Surely even the shark must have thought that even arguing to come along was a sign of forgiveness.
Yet he was so confused about what to do, did he want to go with the shark or not. It was so confusing, his thoughts whizzing around in his head. Traveling up and down as he tried to make a connection with his morality and his thoughts. He felt the first weak breath and after a few more decided to finish up and leave.
Exiting the shower, he started to dry himself up, looking at the mess Benji had made. He ignored that knowing that the shark would clean it up and surely horde the motel's supplies to himself even though they found the large sum of money. They keep it lock in a closet and made sure no one would track them.
He exited the room and walked into the main room. He wondered if Benji was always like this, his body lazily or tiredly spread out against the bed and everything scattered in a fanatic mish-mosh through the room. He saw the shark passed out and it was almost a cute sight to see.
“Good night Benji." Martin said whispering as he walked over to the chair and passed out. As the hours passed and Benji shifted in his bed and finally the shark woke up. He felt around and wondered where Martin had gone; he then looked over at the lizard in the chair.
“Martin, come over here. You don't need to sleep in the chair, I can share." Benji said as he stirred the lizard, who didn't appear to look comfortable in the chair nor even as close to sleep as he was. The lizard saying nothing stood up and stumbled over towards the bed.
Benji moved over, opening the blanket and allowing Martin into the bed as he fell on to the bed and into Benji. Both of them enjoyed their presence as they allowed sleep to engulf them. Too Martin it was his sign of forgiveness to the shark and he hoped he said it well.
“I'm glad to be back." Martin said as Benji's arm engulfed him and he grabbed on making sure Benji was as close as possible to him. He slowly fell asleep, happy that he had forgiven Benji and hopefully Benji had forgiven him as well. And as sleep had surrounded him like Benji, all was happy in the land.
…
“Hello, we would like to rent a room from this establishment here." Brightrock said as he looked down at Darkwater who was telling him that the two were somewhere in the local motel. Unfortunately it seemed the two were smart choosing a moated in room, where they needed to interact with humanity.
“Sorry sir, but you need to pay for a room in order to gain access to King's Slept." The young teenager with a high, squealy voice said as he tried to follow the rules, the manager had set down for him. He was quivering in his boots, intimidated and dominated by the pair of demons before him.
“Oh wouldn't you wish to just let someone like me in, perhaps I could take you to one of the rooms and see how well you wanted to let me in them." Brightrock said as he leaned up against the window separating him and teen, hoping that he could seduce the teen into letting him in.
“I'm sorry sir but it is King's Slept policy to forbid any physical and or mental contact with in working hours." The teen said sticking to his job as Brightrock looked pressured by the decision that the teenager had made to deny him access to his money. “Now sir, I will have to ask you to leave or else the police may have to intervene with in our situation. If you return with in two years, we may be able to form an alternative agreement."
“Fine then, I will be back." Brightrock said as he turned around taking Darkwater with him as they stepped over the moat and back out of the personal property. Brightrock looked at Darkwater, wondering what they would do when they returned to the area.
“Are you sure that you can't track them to the building, all I need to do is tear down this wall and we'd be able to get our money. Yet now he probably has our appearances and we should have gone with the more abrasive tactic." Brightrock said lamenting to himself and his dog. He turned toward the wall, he could feel that his money was in the building but he needed to know how to get there.
…
“Elliot this doesn't look right." Blake said as he looked at the beacon tracker, he was on the inside seat, looking down at the ground below them. He was holding up the tracker and suddenly the arrow on the screen flipped directions.
“What do you mean?" Elliot said knowing they might fly over the area that the treasure was being held in and it would be only natural for them to see the arrow flip over so early. She grabbed the beacon tracker and held it up to her face looking at it.
“Well, the message you relayed to me suggested the treasure would be in a forest. Unless this is a deep cave then wouldn't it be over forest, and it seems that we are over a field. We haven't passed over the mountains of Washington yet." Blake reported forming a gut feeling that something was perhaps wrong with the situation they were in.
“I don' like this, we'll have to catch up during the day." Elliot said as he laid back, making sure to recline her seat and purposely do so to annoy the person behind her. Holding on to the motion tracker, it did tell her that the beacon seemed to be on the ground but she had no idea on how to catch up.
“Well then we have one hour until we arrive at Olympia, it doesn't seem that the beacon is moving. For now we might be able to catch up before whoever is transporting the beacon. Also imagine that we are being lead on a wild goose chase." Blake said as he looked at the scanner and set it relative to beacon.
“Well then we will have to be cautious on the ground, I don't think we are at a risk of being deceived at all but we must be cautious." Elliot said as she tried to relax on the plane wondering where her Master's treasure had gone. She was worried with what someone would do with that money.
…
Isen looked around the offices of the BOO agents, first looking for those that might try to hurt the ones he held close. As he looked around the area they had given to the Outsiders, blocked off with big blue tape he decided to something a bit more dangerous.
Walking forward he knocked on Elliot's door and after a minute of no response, he knew no one was home. Putting his hand on the noob, he felt the lock and sent out a little wave of magnetic energy from his hand. He was getting a good feeling from the lock as it bounced back into his hand.
Twisting the noob slowly he unlocked the first tumbler and then using his magnetic feelings he unlocked the rest allowing him access into the area. Pushing the door in he looked into Elliot's room. He knew she'd be disappointed on him, falling back on old skills and doing the morally undecided actions that had him meet with the Outsiders in the first place.
Looking around the room on the center of the desk, he saw a box, a large box. Walking over to it, he viewed the box and looked into the carrying device. It was as simple as that, he looked inside and picked up a piece of paper. On it written was a simple code, perhaps a tracking beacon code.
“Oh this is good, trying to do something without me Elliot. No wonder Blake left without me, well then I guess I'll have to catch up." Isen said to himself as he postulated the reason that she would leave without him in his head, however that did seem to pass through his mouth as well. “There must be a treasure involved."
Blake ran forward preparing himself, grabbing his gun and ammo as he exited the section. He would need help, someone to back him up and make sure he didn't get out of line. Looking around he found himself someone before him, a crocodile standing in BOO combat armor, made out of metal someone he could keep in line as well.
“Hello solider, state your rank and current objective!" Isen said as he tried to be genre savvy, trying to gain control and make sure the crocodile knew who'd be in control. The crocodile, about six inches taller than him, looked down at him presumably letting him have control.
“What can I do for you sir, I have never seen you around this base before." The crocodile said as Isen realized that his ploy had been a success and he now had the crocodile in the palm of his hand. Elliot would have been so very disappointed.
“Is that what I asked for solider?" Isen said trying to keep his illusion alive, playing the part of the high-strung military general, one he felt that he might be particularity good at convincing him underlines to follow in his order, command those below him and follow his orders to a tee.
“Sorry Sir, I am First Lieutenant Alex Wave, I have the ability to control wave functions, I am here to guard you sir." The little solider said as Isen smiled, giving him the feeling of being accepted he desperately needed. Isen found someone to roll around his finger take him under his wing.
“Well then solider, consider yourself lucky I don't have you court-martialed for what you did. Now then we are looking for a dangerous girl, a woman who stole a treasure and is currently somewhere in…." Isen said as with his spare phone, a paper clip, tin foil and a quarter he made his own beacon tracker. Entering the code, he quickly found the way he was going.
“Olympia, Washington. Now then get us tickets to Washington DC and we'll be on our way." Isen said as he looked up at the tracker, presenting it as if it had always been there. Smiling a bit he made sure that Alex looked impressed.
“You do mean Washington, as in the state?" Alex said as Isen led him towards the elevator. Of course in Isen's time, he had no idea where or when a Washington state was. However, he did make his way towards the elevator confident that he had chosen someone with the right gusto to do the job.
“Not bad for an 18th century boy." Isen said as he sneered at his own cleverness. Walking into the elevator, he watched as the lieutenant prepared their flight. Remembering that he had to order tickets for Benji and Martin, he knew they would be there too.
…
“Ah good morn." Martin said as he missed the squeeze of Benji on his body. Looking around he saw the shark sitting down at the table, the smell in the air as well as the steam told him Benji prepared a coffee for him as well. The lizard yawned a bit to delay talking and allow him to think of a witty comeback.
“Well then this just might be the best part of walking up." Martin said using the best he could think of, and even then he thought it was quite poor. Ignoring that still Martin looked down into the coffee and saw the brown in the drink. Benji prepared as to the specifications he once randomly gave.
“You remembered, even I didn't remember." Martin said as he sipped the coffee his mind almost feeling that Benji was trying to trick him some sort of trap that was being formed. Still he didn't surrender, and instead sipped on the tea a bit more.
“Now then onto today's itinerary, first off we get onto the highway, zig zagging our way through the states until we find ourselves at an interstate 80 in perhaps a day and a half, in another day we see if we can take a few back roads and cross the other half of the country. In a few days our little road ends." Benji said as if he planned out the entire road trip, from their diners to their stops, to a bathroom schedule.
“Wow, you did plan this out well." Martin said complementing Benji as he took a look at the laminated plan and map of the path they were going to take. Looking at it, the map seemed to fool proof and an easy to follow path. He wondered what else Benji had time to fit in.
“Well then we don't have much time left, so let's pack up and leave." Martin said, it was almost as if his mind skipped as he entered the car and Benji placed a pair of ray bans on his face. Revving the engine, he drove out of the parking lot and yet behind them Martin could see two shadows following after them.
…
“Come one Darkwater, this is where the chase begins." Brightrock said as he quickly broke up the window of a car and entered it, using his demon powers he activated the engine and it started up. Waiting a few seconds and Brightrock attempted to get the hang of driving again, nearly crashing it.
Behind them, Brightrock and Darkwater followed them attempting to play the long game. They would wait for the two in front of them, wait for them to be most vulnerable and then they would finally strike. They just needed to wait and wait they would.
…
“Come on Blake, I'm getting a signal now." Elliot said as she exited the parking lot of the airport and started to walk. She figured it would be in walking distance, but as Blake grabbed it he clicked it on its side and it switched from an arrow to a radar like showing. Had she not been completely tired, she might have figured that out.
“Wait it's two hundred miles away, how do you get two hundred miles away, we'll need a car to catch up with this mad driver." Elliot said as she looked around and saw a fine looking car. “Don't tell Isen I did this." Looking around she waited a second to make sure she and Blake were alone.
She quickly acted, smashing her elbow into the window and unlocking the car from the inside. Making sure to leave no glass, she pulled herself into the car and unlocked the other side for Blake. Pulling out a pair of tiny metal beams, she placed them in the ignition and activated the car.
Rolling down Blake's window as she attempted to make them blend in a bit more. She waited a few seconds as she accelerated down the street and followed the dot on the radar. Not only was she driving a stolen car, while being severely sleep deprived, while driving distracted.
“You realize that this is highly illegal, also you couldn't say use those beams to open the door without breaking open the window. Now we are going to have to have the wind in our hair the whole time." Blake said as he pointed at her broken window. “God I hope it doesn't rain, that will really hurt."
“We'll jack a different car when we're somewhere in the rural countries, no one notices nor cares what happens there." Elliot said as she drove forward, their plight continuing as the day pass. The sun passing over their bodies as they drove towards the dot.
In the midday, they were a hundred miles away and by three o'clock they were ten. Looking forward they were somewhere in Montana, perhaps halfway through the state. It was beautiful, the wind they were forced to feel was so pleasant. The ground was flat, but large mesas sprung out of the ground.
Looking forward into the distance as she sped forward, she could see two cars in front of them. Based on the distance one of them had to be the beacon holder. Using her powers she extended out and tried to find the identity of the people before her.
“I can see it, two so dark and two so light. It's like fuzzy pictures, but their getting clearer." Elliot said as she suddenly saw it, her hands shook on the wheel as the two cars before them started. Her mind was infected; the darkness was seeping into her area.
“Now then Darkwater why don't we kill a bitch?" Elliot said her voice deepening as she too stopped, drifting the car over and pulling out her gun. She pointed it at Blake and the Outsiders stopped at the situation arose.
